Experience from institutions to start-ups. Continuously changing shifts in scientific research, technological advances, and new teaching methods impact the programmatic needs of these facilities. Mindful of this, we approach design from the users’ point of view – people who spend long hours in these spaces – the professor, the student, the researcher. Working closely with clients to implement streamlined modern solutions, we enhance research organizations by providing environments that foster ingenuity and community to bring ideas together for the process of discovery.

115 HARTWELL

New construction creates flagship space for innovative campus. The goal of this project is to create the flagship building for THINC (The Hartwell Innovation Campus) in Lexington Massachusetts. This three story ground up speculative laboratory building creates shell space for corporate laboratory clients and serves as the focus for the 270,000 SF science campus. The class A laboratory building was designed with maximum flexibility including robust MEP systems, generous natural light, and expansive support space to allow future tenants to inhabit and grow within the building.

UNIQURE

Turning manufacturing into discovery. UniQure is part of a 100,000 SF renovation of a former laboratory and manufacturing building in Lexington, MA. Located in a vibrant science and technology area, this renovation created a 1st class laboratory space. UniQure is one of multiple tenants in the building, but still maintains their own visual presence and entry. The project involves the replacement of the concrete tilt-up panel exterior skin with a new metal and glass skin to maximize light into the building. An atrium space created a light filled, informal gathering space for the employees, as well as the reception.

QUANTERIX

A new headquarters for collaboration. Quanterix is a tenant fit-up for a laboratory company consisting of a mix of office and lab spaces. Lab area is open and flexible with some closed, specific to certain areas. This project created a new corporate headquarters for Quanterix Corporation as they continue to grow and expand. The laboratory scope included both research and manufacturing of their single molecule diagnostic equipment and devices. Designed to allow maximum amount of light, the open spaces also maintain visual and collaborative connection between research and office functions.

BOSTON COLLEGE Renovations for unique and changing uses. Devlin Hall: clean rooms, molecular geology laboratory, rock crushing laboratory, Scanning Electronic Microscope laboratory and office and support spaces. Higgins Hall: laser laboratory, wet laboratories, surgical suite within animal care facility, condensed matter laboratory and office and support spaces. McGuinn Hall: School of Social Work library, psychology laboratory, psychology testing laboratory and office and support spaces.

4 HARTWELL

Modernizing dated space for today’s tenants. This 40,000 SF building was adapted from general office space to life science use. The architectural appeal was enhanced through façade and interior environment improvements for the tenants. Renovations included new, dedicated tenant entrances, larger windows to bring more natural light into the space, and exterior landscape and hardscape improvements. Completed fit-outs include Sekisui, a products leader in systems and services that support patient care improvement worldwide; SynapDx, a private company developing laboratory diagnostic services for autism and neurodevelopmental disorders; and T2 Biosystems, a vitro diagnostics company.

FRAUNHOFER CSE

Preservation & Cutting-Edge Design. The Fraunhofer Center for Sustainable Energy (CSE) is a new research and office facility located in the old Leather District of Boston. The building occupies a 50,000 SF, sixstory historic structure which was built circa 1913 and was originally used as a mercantile building in the local leather trade. With brick walls and exposed steel and timber framing, the building is perfectly suited to showcase the advanced material research and technology that is synonymous with Fraunhofer CSE. There are six exterior testing chambers, along with a comprehensive experimental area designated on the roof.

WAVE

Collaboration space in a renovated warehouse. Wave Life Sciences is a new corporate headquarters and research facility for a genetic medicine company startup in Cambridge, MA. The headquarters is located in an early 20th century former warehouse building. The 30,000 SF corporate fit-up of the sawtooth roof, post and beam structure was designed to meet both the exacting needs of the research and to express the collaborative culture of Wave. The open space design has no private offices and is arranged around a skylight spine, linking the research and office areas.

WYETH

A new development facility for research. Wyeth BioPharma is dedicated to the development and manufacturing of recombinant protein biopharmaceuticals. The Wyeth BioPharma campus offers 50,000 SF and employs nearly 1,500 scientists, engineers, and other biopharmaceutical professionals. DiMella Shaffer designed a major new development facility that houses laboratories and administrative and executive office space. Additionally, the manufacturing facility was redesigned to provide for significant expansion, including a data center, cafeteria, fitness center and expanded office space.
