• The Farcet Library Café is open on the first Saturday of every month: 7 March, 4 April, 2 May, 6 June and 4 July from 11am-1pm in the back room of the Village Hall.

25 members and two visitors met at the Lancaster Club on 12 February for a very interesting talk and slide show by Dr Tom Davies. He recounted his holiday in New Zealand; a beautiful country with very friendly people who are proud of their heritage.

Arrangements were made for a theatre trip, the Federation Day and the Birthday Dinner. The March meeting is at 7.30pm on 12 March at the Lancaster Club, Main Street, and the speaker, Miriam Carette, will be talking about ‘Katherine and her Prince’, a real life tale of medieval romance.

Holme WI The February meeting gave the group time to reflect on ideas for the centenary tapestry; one of the members, Liz Lovesy, also gave an insight into the local history of the WI in Holme and Huntingdon, a very interesting and humorous talk. Many of the members took sections of the tapestry away to complete in their own style. Holme WI is looking forward to an exciting year with interesting speakers and competitions such as Swinging Sixties, Hats for All and Life on an Indian Reservation.

An incredible £14,500 was raised last year and this year the Fayre promises to be even more spectacular. The 2015 Sawtry Carnival date is set for the 13 June when it celebrates its 10th birthday. Last year’s Carnival was a fantastic success and had its largest footfall ever and this year with more stalls to visit it promises to be another great event for Sawtry and the surrounding villages. Many stall holders have already booked their place, providing a variety of stalls for you on the day. There is also some fantastic afternoon entertainment lined up and varied activities organised to keep everyone busy without breaking the bank. The Carnival Parade will be as big as ever and Carnival Court from Sawtry and surrounding towns will be adding fairytale glitz and glamour to the event. East Anglian Air Ambulance’s (EAAA) critical-care paramedic (CCP) Gary Spitzer paid a special visit to Yaxley Infant School in Peterborough on Friday to teach them about the vital work of EAAA.

East Anglian Air Ambulance critical care paramedic is a ‘superhero’ On 30 January, CCP Gary was invited to the infant school on their ‘Superhero Day’ to demonstrate the work that he does at EAAA which makes him a real life superhero! In the morning, Gary held an assembly for the 160 pupils with their parents and teachers to talk about the lifesaving work of EAAA. The assembly included information on Gary’s role as a critical-care paramedic and how the crews work together as a team to save lives across East Anglia.

A demonstration was also given on Gary’s orange flight suit, the helmets worn by the crew during journeys in the Charity’s two helicopters, and the lifesaving medical equipment.

It was clear that the children had done their research as they had lots of thoughtful questions to ask Gary and they were all very excited to raise money for EAAA in the coming weeks, after hearing about how the money helps people in the region.”

Yaxley British Legion rewards exceptional service

Royal British Legion VE Day celebration

Yaxley Royal British Legion recently honoured two members for their remarkable contributions to the local branch.

The Yaxley Branch of the Royal British Legion will be holding a weekend of celebrations commemorating the 70th anniversary of Victory in Europe Day, which heralded the end of the Second World War’s European hostilities. VE Day, as it is known, saw the whole country come together to celebrate, with music, dancing, thankfulness and prayers, the beginning of the end of one of the most traumatic periods of our recent history.

Mr Bryan Goulding, formerly serving in the Royal Army Pay Corps for 22 years, stationed in Cyprus, Singapore, Aden and Malaysia, received a Gold Service badge. He has been the Branch President for 20 years, Vice-Chairman twice and has twice shouldered the heavy burden of being the Branch’s Poppy Appeal Organiser. Receiving the award, Bryan said that he was “delighted” at the “totally unexpected” honour. A Branch Appreciation Certificate was presented to Mr John Ascott. “I am very proud to serve as a Royal British Legion oﬃcer,” he said. Having served for six years in the 1st Royal Anglians Heavy Infantry, John has been in the Royal British Legion for 15 years, 10 of them as Yaxley Branch treasurer. Despite ill health, he can be found at Peterborough Railway Station collecting donations every day throughout every Poppy Appeal. Chris Waites, Yaxley Branch Secretary, can’t praise Bryan and John enough: “They have never stopped serving, firstly their country, and now their former comrades. Without making a fuss, they do what needs to be done. The Legion couldn’t go on helping veterans and their families year in, year out, without loyal and untiring members like these.” If you feel you would like to help Yaxley Royal British Legion in its work, please get in touch with the Branch Secretary, on 01733 244058.

The Yaxley Branch of the Royal British Legion is therefore asking local bands, singers and stallholders, interested in supporting this event, to contact them to make this event worthy of the occasion. The Branch is hoping that your musical contribution could either be voluntary, or at a low cost, as the budget for this event is limited and they want to make it happen by promoting local talent.

Saturday 16 May The plan is a little something for everyone, from the oldest to the youngest. Schools and clubs are being encouraged to take part in showcasing the talents of the future generations along with more modern bands and singers.

Sunday 17 May The plan is to take you back to the 1940s with an old fashioned children’s ‘Street Party’ (in the car park) followed by a traditional sing along and good old knees up. Yaxley Singers looking to grow

Christian Aid Lent ‘Super Soup’ Lunches

Yaxley Singers are making steady progress on their planned spring and summer programme and can take a few more singers into their ranks.

Everyone is invited to a home cooked lunch – soup, cakes and drinks – on Saturdays 7, 14, 21, 28 March.

The main requirement is enthusiasm! The group can also accept engagements, are very adaptable, and are confident they can put on a good show. Any proceeds from concerts are donated to the chosen charity, Peterborough Association for the Blind, who provide, with the help of other local groups, a fantastic range of sports from sailing to bowls, even rifle shooting! Also many other activities. Yaxley Singers can be contacted on rehearsal night, Wednesdays at 7.30pm, at the Methodist Chapel on Main Street, Yaxley. Yaxley Broadway Bowls Club So the year moves on! Our bowlers will be counting the days till the 17 April. Things are looking particularly well at our club with a goodly number of new members all ready enrolled many of whom will be joining us for our Annual Dinner and Presentation Night on 6 March. Now that is what I call a flying start! We can still accept a few more. Don’t forget a letter in now and you can be bowling from day one! Just a reminder that our Club is self financing and completely dependent on the efforts of the membership From every aspect, green maintenance to raising money by supporting our social events which we have been doing extremely well since 1950.

Plans to rebuild Yaxley Fire Station are still awaiting a decision by the planning authority Huntingdonshire District Council. The proposal was submitted in November and a decision is expected to be made in March. Options are still being explored by CFRS to find a site for a temporary fire station, which will be used by the oncall crews while construction of the new Yaxley Fire Station is ongoing.

Cambridgeshire Fire and Rescue Service

The event, which is in its 42nd year, saw firefighters guide a festive sleigh round the village’s streets for four nights to raise £5,032 in total.

Yaxley ﬁreﬁghters raise record sum for charity Firefighters from Yaxley’s on-call station handed over £5,000 to three charities following a week of fundraising. Local representatives from The Fire Fighters Charity and British Dyslexia Association (BDA) visited the fire station on 12 February to collect their equal share of the cash, which was raised by the Yaxley Christmas Ride in December. The third charity, SANDS (Stillbirth and Neonatal Death Society), was unable to make the presentation but will receive its cheque by post.

“It was lovely to welcome representatives from these incredible charities to Yaxley Fire Station to show our support for the work they do. This event is a long-standing tradition in Yaxley and the total from this year was a record-breaker, so we can’t thank the community enough for their generosity.” Yaxley Crew Commander Jamie Bovington, event organiser.

The Festival will offer you wildlife events throughout the week based at green spaces around the city.

Don’t miss the ‘Wildlife Festival Finale’ on Saturday 30th May 11am – 4pm, to be held in Ferry Meadows Country Park where there will be lots of free children’s activities, a chance to find out how you could get involved in caring for the local wildlife and win the opportunity of being ‘a ranger for the day’.

You can join bird walks, bat evenings, ponddipping, bug hunts and fun craft activities, many at the popular Ferry Meadows Country Park. You can explore nature reserves close to the city and have a rare chance to visit Swaddywell Pit to discover how local volunteers are looking after nature. We hope to see you there discovering our own local joys of springtime wildlife.

Koi! Cambridgeshire Koi Club was originally formed in the 1970s as the Peterborough Koi Club. As members and expanding geography changed, the club then became Cambridgeshire Koi club. The group’s volunteer leader, Gillian Woolley, is very pleased with how things are going. “People find out all sorts of things about their ancestors – not just where and when they lived but criminal records, tragedies, surprises. And people shouldn’t think it’s too diﬃcult for them. “In the group we all help each other along and have a laugh, and we get to use the ancestry websites for free.” You can get access to Ancestry.co.uk and Find My Past for free at any time in any Cambridgeshire library. North Hunts Community Car Scheme’s 10th Birthday Party Plans for the party to be held at Austin Hall, Yaxley on 10 April are almost complete. Invitations have been sent out and around 100 passengers will be attending, along with guests from the local communities and of course the coordinators and drivers from the scheme. HACT [Huntingdon Association of Community Transport] will be providing transport for those members who have requested it.This will be by minibus and everyone will be advised nearer the date of their pick up time. HACT has received a great deal of local support and the party is being funded completely by donations.

Supporters include: Yaxley Group Practice, Yaxley Patients Association, Holme Reading Room Trust, drivers and passengers, and various anonymous individuals. Local businesses and drivers have provided prizes for the raﬄe held at the party. HACT would like to thank everyone for their support and generosity. Jeremy Hillyard will be there to entertain on the afternoon. Many of you will know him from other local events. The coordinators and drivers look forward to seeing everyone on the day for what should be an enjoyable afternoon.

HAT Club Update The HAT Club met at Holme Village Hall on 11 February, as usual on the second Wednesday of the month. The Committee organised games and a fun time was had by all present. Top designer for Yaxley’s Festival Park building A facility built to inspire needs an inspirational designer. And this is precisely the reason why the Fenland Trust has commissioned one of the world’s most talented architects to visualise Yaxley’s Festival Park building. The new community hub and sports facility at Middleton’s Road Recreation Ground is just one of the projects in development by the Yaxley-based charitable organisation who are working on a multistrand long-term plan to develop sport, education, tourism, heritage and the arts in and around Yaxley. Award-winning architect Andrea Morgante, owner of London-based design practice Shiro Studio, has completed projects for Ferrari, Alessi, M&C Saatchi, Peroni, D-Shape, Agape, Poltrona Frau, Seiko Japan and Electa. In 2012, Andrea completed the construction of the Enzo Ferrari Museum in Italy. More recently Andrea’s Shiro Studio won the Great Fen Visitor Centre RIBA architectural design open competition from more than 200 anonymous entries. It is therefore with great excitement that the Fenland Trust is looking forward to welcoming Andrea to Yaxley later this month to meet the growing list of partners and establish a clear idea of exactly what this new beating heart for the village will look like. Posters, flyers and information packs will be available from next month and the Trust will be presenting locally with the partners at dates and multiple venues to be confirmed.

Yaxley Group Practice Travel Vaccinations If you’re planning to travel outside the UK, you may need to be vaccinated. Vaccinations are available to protect you against many travel-related infections, such as yellow fever, typhoid and hepatitis A. You don’t always need vaccinations to travel abroad. If you do, the type of travel jabs you need depends on which country you’re visiting and what you’re doing. Please ask at reception for a Travel Health questionnaire; one has to be completed for each person who is travelling. When completed, return to reception and one of our qualified nurses, who are trained in travel health management, will contact you within three weeks, to discuss what vaccinations are required. Please allow six weeks before you are due to travel, as some vaccinations need to be given well in advance to allow your body to develop immunity and some involve multiple doses spread over several weeks. SCR – NHS Summary Care Record A Summary Care Record (SCR) is an electronic record which contains information about the medicines you take, allergies you suffer from and any bad reactions to medicines you have had. Having this information in one place makes it easier for healthcare staff to treat you in an emergency, or when your GP practice is closed.

More information can also be found at http://systems.hscic.gov.uk/scr or you can pick up a leaflet in the surgery. Yaxley Group Practice commenced upload to the SCR from 28 January 2015. If you are happy for us to make a Summary Care Record for you then you do not need to do anything. We will automatically make one for you. If you do not want us to make you a SCR then please complete and return an opt-out form which can be obtained from reception. Baby Clinic We have made slight changes to the times for our baby clinic, which is held on a Tuesday afternoon. The clinic will now run from 1-3pm. We hope that this will be more convenient for parents who are collecting their older children from school. The Health Visiting Team Another year of fundraising for the Patients Association has gone by. With your support donating bric-a-brac and buying at the summer boot sales, also buying cards for special people and occasions and calendars at Christmas during 2014/15, the practice has raised £915. In this total is £173.10 raised at the Shopping Centre Christmas Fayre. I would like to say a special thank you to members of the Committee and to helpers who gave up their time to help at the Fayre. Question: I wish to set up my own limited company – can I do this myself? Answer: Yes you can, but a limited company must be properly created in accordance with company law requirements and registered with Companies House. This process is known as incorporation. Although a company formation agent, accountant, solicitor or chartered secretary can be used to incorporate the company in return for a fee; it is possible and relatively straightforward to set up the business yourself using the web incorporation service offered by Companies House. The fee for this service is only £15 (see www.companieshouse.gov.uk). However, you may wish to seek professional advice prior to setting up a company, as there are many factors to consider before doing so. This is something that we can assist you with. Tax: I would like to thank Mr Jackson from Stanground who enquired whether we knew the position regarding the transfer of personal allowances, as he thought many people were not aware of this. In the 2013 budget, then the amount was subsequently increased in the 2014 budget, it was announced that from the tax year 2015/16 couples, where neither partner is a higher or additional rate taxpayer, will be able to transfer £1,050 of their personal allowances to their spouse. Choosing to transfer £1,050 of the personal allowance will mean that one spouse or civil partner will pay tax on £1,050 less of their income and will be worth £210 to eligible couples. Taking the tax liabilities of a couple together can provide a financial benefit where one spouse/civil partner has an income less than their personal allowance. From 2016-17 the transferable amount will be 10 per cent of the basic personal allowance.

Yaxley Methodist Chapel A few years ago I bought a beautiful Lupin from a plant Fayre. I planted it in my front garden so that others could share its beauty as they passed by. The next morning someone had dug it up and taken it. I hope they enjoyed its beauty and didn’t just throw it away. The same morning I received a call to tell me a dear friend had died suddenly. A few weeks ago my house was broken into. Although I had little jewellery, and what I did have was mainly of sentimental value, it was taken. I would like to think someone will buy it and enjoy its beauty and it has not just been melted down. Three days later I had news that one of our dear ladies from the Chapel had died suddenly. All this has reminded me that material things really don’t matter in life. Friends and family are what really matter. I could probably replace some of the material things I have lost, but we can’t replace people who give us such wonderful memories of times spent together. In the Chapel we support each other. We are friends who share times of joy and of sadness. If you would like to join us and discover new friends who will offer friendship and support why not come to one of our services or coffee mornings. St. Peter’s Church I watched a TV programme recently where a British woman was helped to find a German man who had emigrated to the US over 50 years earlier. In her words, they had been sweethearts in the 1950s and he emigrated when she decided not to accept his proposal of marriage. She had later had a very unhappy marriage and had clearly had a very hard life in several respects. Worse than that, she had never forgiven herself for rejecting her sweetheart and had thought about him all the time for over 50 years. She was desperate to apologise to him and had tried unsuccessfully for many years to trace him. However, eventually the BBC managed to track him down. The BBC presenter met him and told him about the regrets of his former sweetheart. After emigrating he had been very happily married but was now a widower. Interestingly, he had got on with his life and admitted that he had not thought about the woman for over 50 years. Nonetheless, he agreed to come over to London and the pair were reunited in a London hotel. She was able to apologise to him and he graciously accepted the apology, but said that everyone makes mistakes and he had long since moved on.

It seems to me that one lesson from this story is that wherever possible we should take the opportunity to apologise to people we have wronged as soon as we can (and before they emigrate or we can’t speak to them for any other reason). Secondly, part of the Christian belief is that when we confess our wrongs, God forgives us. If God has forgiven us then we need to learn to forgive ourselves as well and not let past mistakes ruin our lives. During this season of Lent, as we confess our wrongdoings to God, perhaps some of us need to also forgive ourselves as God has forgiven us. May I remind you that we are running a Money Course at St Peter’s starting on Monday 9 March. Westwood Musical Society are delighted to present Sister Act in April. As a society they have been performing in Peterborough for over 40 years and are still going strong! This year’s show is directed by Monique Benoiton, and the Society are thrilled to have Andrew Brown back as Musical Director. Sister Act is the feel-amazing musical comedy. It tells the hilarious story of Deloris Van Cartier, a wannabe diva whose life takes a surprising turn when she witnesses a crime and the cops hide her in the last place anyone would think to look – a convent! Under the suspicious watch of Mother Superior, Deloris helps her fellow sisters find their voices as she unexpectedly rediscovers her own. A sparkling tribute to the universal power of friendship, Sister Act is reason to REJOICE! Fourfields Filming is a common thread at Fourfields this half term. To provide a cosy winter social event, our Friends of Fourfields have organised two Film Nights (including popcorn!) and these have been very popular with the children.

Yaxley Infant School Is it a bird? Is it a plane? No, it’s the Superheroes from Yaxley Infant School! The children in Foundation Stage are sporting capes, masks and all kinds of superhero gadgets as part of their ‘To Infinity and Beyond’ creative learning theme. The children have all dreamt up their own superhero characters, designing their own costumes and writing about their superpowers. They have also had to crack addition and subtraction codes to open safes and defeat baddies! Thinking about superpowers has fitted in beautifully with our ‘It’s good to be me’ SEAL theme, and Year 1 pupils have written about their special gifts and talents on twinkling gold stars. We were excited to receive visits from real life heroes too, Adam the soldier and Gary, a paramedic from the East Anglian Air Ambulance. Gary visited each classroom answering the children’s questions and also left us a fundraising challenge, filling up our pennycopters! This has become a maths challenge for Year 2, who are totalling up each day. All the children at Yaxley Infant School are working hard to become ‘Handwriting Heroes’ with lots of children in Year 2 writing so beautifully they have earned pen licences. Hooray for heroes!

Alongside this we hosted our Literacy Week when the children were involved with many literacy-based activities including a dress up day where the challenge was to dress up as a favourite film character. The Headteacher took the opportunity to dress up as Mary Poppins and amongst the children there were many Minions and Elsas! Other activities that took place that week to support our literacy focus included a number of parent information sessions, guest teachers reading stories to classes, visits to the local library, classroom doors decorated with a film theme and a whole school homework project to advertise a film of choice. February saw the arrival of a professional film crew to film our PE practice for a Training Module for The Times Educational Supplement and the Open University, with a number of our children featuring in the film! They all deserved Oscars!

Little Acorns Day Nursery We have been very busy over the last couple of months. We have celebrated Chinese New Year and Valentine’s Day, making flowers out of handprints for our loved ones. We also learnt the story of Hansel and Gretel. The children have been making the most of the recent weather and decided that they wanted to all build ‘Olaf’ snowmen from the Disney film Frozen. This was a lot of fun. This month our children have been reading Captain Underpants and Aliens in Underpants, doing some fun activities which we are displaying on our story board including their own paper underpants. They have been learning rhyming words and learning alliteration. The children also took a trip to the local library for story time. Stilton Primary School We’re having a wonderful spring term at Stilton Primary School. Each of our classes are immersed in their spring term topics. Children in Owl Class have been thinking about the story of ‘The Gingerbread Man’ and made their own gingerbread man to take home and eat! In Robin Class, the children have been thinking about the characters in ‘Jack and the Beanstalk’, and then they wrote their own stories using these characters. Children in Otter Class have been learning about countries around the world, thinking about how countries are similar and different to each other. In Rabbit, Badger and Hedgehog classes, the topic this term is ‘survival’. The children have been looking at different sources of energy and mining.

On 20 March, the Stanground Academy will be hosting their annual Charity Fashion Show. This fun-filled evening, which will include catwalk shows, dance acts, singers, stalls, raﬄes and refreshments, will raise money for the Sue Ryder Foundation.

This half term, KS2 children had the opportunity to take part in Young Voices, the largest children’s choir in the world, and perform at the Genting Arena in Birmingham. This was a fantastic experience for all of the children and adults too.

At the Stanground Academy our sixth form hairdressing and beauty students pride themselves on the hair and beauty services they offer to the public during their salon sessions.

We also enjoyed the small flurry of snow and took this rare opportunity to play on the school field; building snowmen and having snowball fights, which we all loved! Stilton Primary School is now part of the Children’s University and we are delighted that 20 of our children graduated. These children completed at least 30 hours of learning outside of school. Congratulations to all our graduates!

This year the VRQ level 2 and 3 students have produced a fashion show around the theme ‘a night at the movies’. The show will incorporate different looks from a wide range of films and will require the students’ skills and expertise in creating the models ready for the catwalk. In addition to the catwalk show, local companies will be selling and advertising their goods and services in the auditorium before and after the show. As you know, we had a little snow but we made the most of it. We went out into the garden and made our own snowman, and a lot of fun was had by everyone as they also made their own snowballs to throw. We finished our fun outside with a hot chocolate drink before going inside to warm up and watch it melt away.

Holme Village Pre-school We have continued with our hibernation theme this term. We talked about how the animals can’t find food in the winter, and the children made their own birdseed cake to take home and hang in their gardens. The children also made a hedgehog to take home out of clay and rosemary, and for one of our cooking activities we decorated cakes with chocolate icing and drops to resemble a hedgehog.

Travelling Ted has also arrived at Pre-school and has had a fantastic time going home for the night to children’s houses. William De Yaxley C of E Academy Our children have been completing pieces of unaided writing, in a truly independent manner, so we can assess exactly how they perform as writers, and identify their next steps and improvement areas. Headteacher Mrs Corley had the pleasure of dropping in on 6VB as they were immersing themselves in ‘the day the snowman came to life’ preparation for their Big Write. It just happened to be a Tuesday when we had actual snow and the children were able to build snowmen and experience playing in the snow before they had hot chocolate to warm their hands in readiness for writing – the outcomes were stunning! Since becoming an Academy we have been exploring a new system for booking parents evenings online and have had some very positive feedback. After the half term break, our year 3 children will take part in their first residential to Stibbington. They will be investigating aspects of our topics around: Rivers, rural locality, map skills, water, weather and ECO-action. Our year 6 children will be taking part in a 3-night residential to London where they will see the sites London has to offer, with visits to the Houses of Parliament and the Battle of Britain Memorial, London Eye, The British Museum, Westminster Abbey and Covent Garden, finishing with a matinee performance of the Lion King!

Getting your garden ready for

Spring

From the longer daylight hours to the sound of morning birds, the signs of spring are all around us. Spring and winter are battling it out but there’s plenty to do to prepare your spring garden. Here are some ways to get your garden ready for the better weather. Plants inside the Home • Start fertilising house plants as soon as there are more hours of daylight than darkness. • Re-acclimatise plants that have been inside all winter to the outdoors. Ease them outside on warm days and don’t leave them out overnight until there’s no chance of frost. Don’t forget to clip dead leaves off to focus nutrients. • Clean off leaves with a mild detergent and warm water. Don’t scrub or pull on leaves. Plants outside the home • Clear out weeds, debris and last year’s dead leaves from garden beds and loosen soil. Top Tip – pulling weeds is easier while the ground is wet. • Call Greenthumb to sort out your lawn! (see editorial opposite) • Add compost and natural fertiliser such as odourless horse manure when the soil is dry enough. • Help the compost decompose by turning it with a pitchfork every few weeks.

• Remove dead flower heads from bulbs that have finished flowering so their energy is able to focus on new bulb development. • Lift and divide large clumps of herbaceous plants. Remove the old woody stalks and add them to the compost. • Keep an eye out for aphids that like that new spring growth. Use botanical pesticide as a last resort to insect attacks. • If trees and shrubs in your garden have broken branches or ‘suckers’ (small young branches), cut them off as close as possible to the main branches, as they zap the strength of the tree. • Use vinegar and lemon juice to remove mold and mildew from garden tools, plastic toys and lawn furniture before putting them outside. Take advantage of your recycling days to properly dispose of old appliances, batteries, paint cans, and other non-waste items. • Remove fallen leaves from gutters and around the foundation of the house to prevent mold and mildew from forming. Mulch and compost your leaves and place them around acid-loving plants and trees.

Now all we need to do is sit back wait for the warmer days to arrive and we can crack open the BBQ!

Cancer detecting dogs Dogs are renowned for their sense of smell. For centuries doctors have known diseases have characteristic odours which dogs may be able to detect. This is what the charity Medical Detection Dogs works with every day. One arm of the charity is specifically about training dogs to sniﬀ out cancer cells. Cancer cells release small amounts of volatile substances. The charity trains dogs to detect these volatiles and hopefully this work and research will enable scientists to develop an early cancer screening system. The dogs are trained to work samples of breath, urine and skin but every so often some dogs have gone one step further.

Ten-year-old labrador Daisy is one of the charity’s most experienced dogs and belongs to CEO Claire Guest. One day Daisy kept pawing at Claire’s chest, so she decided to get herself checked and was told she was in the early stages of breast cancer. Daisy had detected the deep cancer cells early enough that it was able to be removed easily. If it had been undetected for longer it could have been much more serious. Along with her contribution to cancer research, Daisy has been awarded a Blue Cross medal – a well-earned recognition we’re sure you’ll agree. Occasionally some exceptional pet dogs have been known to detect cancer. Tina, from Huntingdon, owes her life to a little dog called Ruben. Ruben always got excited when Tina came to visit but when she visited in August 2011, something was very different. The 18-month-old

A sensitive and proactive approach

Cavalier wouldn’t leave Tina alone, even staying with her overnight. Usually he was content to sit on anyone’s lap for a cuddle, but that weekend he insisted on being with Tina and lay every time with his head on her chest. He scratched and licked at her left side whenever he got the chance. At first Tina didn’t take much notice but Ruben had made Tina’s left side so sore that when she got home she felt a lump in her left breast. Tina was diagnosed with a 38mm cancerous tumour and a mere four weeks after visiting Ruben, Tina underwent a double mastectomy. Tina is still undergoing care with the hospital, but thankfully she is now healthy and clear of cancer. She says, “There is no doubt about it, Ruben saved my life! BLOG I, as I’m sure many of you do, hate daylight saving time. It is a principle that has been in place for around a century now, and the main point of it was that it was a waste of an hour’s daylight in the morning when we could use it in the evening. Ignoring the fact for a moment that any time in the morning is more valuable than time in the evening (using the approach that you would definitely trade an hour in the evening for an extra 10 minutes when your morning alarm goes off ), what a ridiculous antisocial solution to a problem that doesn’t exist this is! It’s like me saying ‘I know I pay bills, but it would be better if I could use my money for a holiday’ or ‘I know I drive to work, but it would be better if I had a jetpack’. Both these points are true, but utterly pointless in the grand scheme of things - you don’t just change time because you feel like it. Maybe back in pre-First World War days there was an argument for this but not now – shops are open 24 hours a day, crops are yielding harvests that dwarf even the fevered dreams of a turn-of-the-century farmer off his face on homebrew, and anything that you could possibly imagine is available on line at the click of a button. There is no need to faff about with the time anymore. I do however have a counter proposal to Daylight Saving Time. Let us take the principle of mucking about with time seriously and take an hour that we don’t like, let’s say 10 o’clock Monday morning, and move it to Sunday morning. No one could possibly object to Monday mornings being a bit shorter, and anyone who would rather have an extra hour in their weekend needs their head examined. And just think – you’ll be better rested after a slightly longer weekend, making you more productive during the week! It’s perfect, it’s brilliant and we should definitely do it.

DIY SOS answered for Dementia Centre Safe Local Trades volunteers answer ‘DIY SOS’ for resource centre garden revamp. Volunteers from Safe Local Trades in Peterborough joined forces in their own DIY SOS-style transformation project for the city’s newly opened Dementia Resource Centre. The facility on Lincoln Road opened its door last September, providing a hub for dementia support; offering information, advice, activity groups and training for carers. But it was when the centre appealed for help in transforming a patch of wasteland into a community garden – where patients and groups can plant flowers and grow vegetables – that Safe Local Trades came to the rescue.

Following an appeal to members by Safe Local Trades director Eileen Le Voi, free materials and labour by generous volunteers have led to the revamping of the area to create a calming and relaxing space.

Safe Local Trades director Eileen Le Voi, who co-ordinated the project, said: “These generous members had no hesitation in offering their services, skills and time to this remarkable and very worthwhile project – I can’t thank them enough.

Oakfield UK for excavating the land and from Style Home Improvements for laying the paving slabs, and of course to Travis Perkins for donating the materials for the ground works.

Among those offering their help were Travis Perkins in Ivatt Way, Peterborough – who provided all the building materials free of charge.
