WELCOME
Hello and welcome to the April issue of the Hampton Gazette. With Easter now just around the corner we have put a what’s on guide, full of activities for you to join with over the Easter holidays; everything from Easter hunts, to feeding the lambs. In this issue, we have an update from Hampton Gardens; the first year group are due to start September and the building is on schedule to be handed over to the trust in July. If you have any spare time on your hands, our local Sue Ryder is looking for volunteers. This is a great opportunity for students who are looking for some work experience to enhance their CV. Also in this edition, take a look at our wildlife feature on page 15; from butterflies to bumblebees, frogs to swans, beautiful flowers to the sound of the cuckoo ... it’s a great time of year to encourage the children outside to explore local nature. Hope you all have a fun-filled Easter and enjoy your time with friends and loved ones. Until the next issue,

Hampton Gardens Update We have been delighted to receive our first allocation of students for Year 7 in September 2017
T
he building is on schedule to be handed over to the Hampton Academies Trust in July. The Head of School, Al Greenwood, has contacted the parents of our first intake and we are planning to host the Year 6 into Year 7 Move Up day in the new building. As you will see if you drive past the site, the building is now water tight with the final glazing panels going in at the front of the
Learning Resource Centre. The colour scheme, based on autumnal colours, is now visible on parts of the building and in some of the external designs. Many classrooms are nearing completion in terms of final finishings, floor coverings and the installation of fixed furniture. The school field is progressing well and we expect it to be fully playable in September. The parts of the project which
will be completed during the phase are the All Weather Pitch and the Multi-Use Games Area. The Hampton Academies Trust is currently in the process of appointing teachers and support staff for the school. The majority of teachers have already been appointed and there will be opportunities for children in the first intake and their parents to meet the staff before the school opens in September.

We need your help at your local Sue Ryder Do you have a lot of time on your hands? Do you want some experience in a working environment? Do you need to complete work experience for your college course?
W
ell we did, when we were told we had to complete 80 hours of work experience, we looked everywhere from Hospitals to prisons and were getting nowhere. When told to look in our local charity shop, we were a bit apprehensive because, like you, when we think of charity shops, you think old people and second hand clothes, but really it was so much more. It's not just selling clothes to the elderly, it's working through stock, creating window displays and coming up with creative ways to promote Sue Ryder. We are currently taking a health and social care course at
Peterborough Regional College, the Sue Ryder charity shop links to our course because the donations that go to Sue Ryder and the items you pay for go towards: • £16 pays for one hour of incredible care • £35 would provide a complimentary therapy session • £50 provides one session of bereavement counselling • £100 pays for a visit from a clinical nurse • £500 pays for one day of incredible hospice care for a patient • £3,000 pays for a nurse for a month
• £210,000 pays for our hospice at home service every year However, for this money to become available we need your help with donations. Donations have been decreasing lately and the quality of goods coming in aren't up to standard, meaning people are less likely to buy them. All we ask, is that you search through your goods at home and any items you wish to dispose of and you bring them down to the Sue Ryder charity shop in Hampton Vale. Don't say you're going to do it next week because we all know that won't happen, so sort it quickly and bring your things down!
Every donation, no matter how big or small, will help in some way to support a cancer patient or their relatives. The team at Sue Ryder in Hampton is amazing; everyone gets along and it's full of all different age groups, nobody feels under pressure and the daily tasks are easily done with around 2 people on each task. This ensures that it's all done quickly and to a good standard. The atmosphere is upbeat and lively; there is never a dull moment. So, if you feel like this is the place for you, don’t hesitate to pop in and grab some forms and join the volunteers today. By Meggan and Sasha

Christ the Servant King the Parish Church of Hampton
Each one of us needs to be loved and to know we are loved. This is true in our physical and mental life as well as our emotional and spiritual life. Failures in our relationships cut right across social and national boundaries – they are a universal human condition. However, love can change situations. Children who have been broken by selfishness and violence - if they are taken into loving and self-giving homes - can, in time, change into wonderfully whole people. Love in hospitals heals and in care homes it makes time and death bearable. Love can and does soften the hard-hearted, calm the violent and forgive the wrongdoer. Jesus Christ, when he lived on earth, never stopped loving and that love was pushed to the very limits of endurance. It wasn’t until it
was too late, when love had run its full course, that men and women realised that the love of God, nailed to the cross, was all for them. No one could believe the unbelievable truth that God – God himself – would go that far for His children. To save His children, He gave His life. At Easter, we celebrate the reconciling love of God. God and Man reunited when Jesus conquered death and lived again. Loving relationships are at the heart of the Christian faith and it’s that love that we endeavor to share at CSK church. Do come and find out how any Sunday morning at 10am. Every Blessing, Sylvia

Will Symons, the Practice Manager at Hampton Health, gives his monthly update.
All Change at Hampton Health I love the spring. It is a time of new beginnings. We see this when we look at the plants, trees and flowers in our gardens and the green spaces around us. For many businesses, this is the start of a new financial year and we are no different here at Hampton Health. We are delighted to welcome a new salaried GP, Dr Shirazi, who joins us on the 18th April from another Peterborough GP Practice. He will take over from Dr I Sofronieva-Gilbert, who left us just before Easter. We will continue with our early clinics opening for
appointments at 07:00 on a Tuesday and Wednesday morning. These clinics are in addition to our normal opening hours. May I also remind patients that we close our doors between 13:30 and 14:30 to enable staff working the whole day to have a lunch break and to give a handover period between the morning and afternoon shifts. Finally, please note the Surgery will be closed on the two bank Holidays; Good Friday and Easter Monday, so please remember to order your medication in advance.
For up to date information about the Practice, please visit our website www.hamptonhealth.co.uk or contact the surgery on 01733 556900 to arrange an appointment.

A
s more than 40% of all marriages end in divorce, according to the Office of National Statistics, there are key issues that couples should focus on before they make such a serious commitment to one another. A Pre-Nuptial Agreement, is one way that couples can protect themselves, should the relationship break down. Although Pre-Nups are not guaranteed to be water-tight when it comes to a divorce, they are becoming more influential when considering a financial settlement. It is important to really know your partner, not just about their favourite food and movie. Knowing what each of you expect from married life is vital. As couples grow, their behaviours alter and they can
begin to drift apart. Therefore, it is important to be aware of this, so couples can work on their differences and continue to do so together. People’s interests change as they mature and career paths diverge, so it is important that both parties anticipate as best they can, different future scenarios and what they would mean for their financial security if the marriage ended. Discussions should also include what would happen in terms of financial support and the care of the children. While it can’t guarantee a 100% protection of your assets, a well drafted Pre-Nup will go a long way in persuading a Court how the financial assets should be divided up if there is a divorce.

Hampton Tiddlers awarded £10,000 from the Big Lottery Fund Hampton Tiddlers, a stay and play group for children aged 0 to 5 years in Peterborough, is awarded £10,000 by the Big Lottery Fund.
H
ampton Tiddlers was founded in May 2014 by Faustina Yang, with the support from local mums, following the closure of 6 children centres in the whole of Peterborough. It is a voluntary community group run by dedicated volunteers, a majority of them mums themselves. Now it has over 600 families attending the sessions and is growing rapidly. The group won Highly Commended at the National What’s 4 Juniors Awards 2016 for Best Baby and Toddler Group category. The Big Lottery Fund award will fund a wellbeing project which will bring together parents, carers and nannies that have young children to participate in workshops, events
and other activities. It aims to tackle isolation faced by parents who are unable to get out and find suitable activities for young children. We believe this project will help reduce isolation, improve health and wellbeing and increase participation of parents and their children in the community where they live. It will also help encourage families to get involved in their communities in a positive way, through befriending activities and volunteering, reducing the chances of being affected by mental health issues due to isolation. Faustina Yang, Chair of Hampton Tiddlers, said, ‘we are thrilled to have received this fund as it will enable us to make a

PETERBOROUGH ENERGY welcomes 6,000th customer!
yourbusiness
Peterborough Energy, the council's energy tariff offered exclusively for residents of the city, last month welcomed its 6,000th switcher, taking Peterborough residents' cumulative savings to just shy of £1.4 million.
C
ouncillor John Holdich, Leader of Peterborough City Council, said, "I'm delighted that 6,000 households have joined me on the Peterborough Energy tariff. The level of savings achieved by some of the customers is a good indication that many Peterborough households are still paying too much for their energy.” "The switching process is very straightforward and can be done entirely online, but if residents would rather speak to a customer service representative to ask any questions they might have, they
can arrange the switch over the phone or during a home visit." One of the latest customers to switch to Peterborough Energy was Mrs Ward, from Westwood, who saved over £300, she said: "I'm really happy with Peterborough Energy - the supply has been great. I switched following a referral, with the assistance of Alex from Green Energy Switch. He was a lovely lad, very helpful. "I've reduced my bills by over £300, which has come in really helpful now that my husband has retired." The average saving for residents with Peterborough Energy is £223*.
Formed in partnership with OVO Energy, Peterborough Energy aims to offer competitively priced electricity and gas tariffs. Recently announced as uSwitch Supplier of the Year for the third year running in 2017, OVO Energy prides itself on excellent customer service. There are other attractive incentives too, including a three per cent interest rate on account balances for customers who pay monthly and a £20 Amazon gift certificate for customers who switch and then refer others to do the same**.
For full information on switching and the Peterborough Energy incentives, visit www. peterboroughenergy.co.uk or call 0800 408 6706 for pay monthly customers or 0800 408 6710 for Pay As You Go (PAYG).
Peterborough Energy also has a dedicated home visits team, to assist people with the switch and understanding their energy bills. To arrange a free, 15 minute energy savings home visit call 01733 642 272.
* £223 is the average saving of pay monthly dual-fuel customers that have actually switched to Peterborough Energy between 01/05/15 and 31/12/16; individual savings will vary according to current supplier, location, consumption and Peterborough Energy tariff options. | ** Promoter(s): Peterborough City Council, using the brand name Peterborough Energy (a brand licensed by OVO Energy Limited). Would you like to find out more about your local running group?
For those of you who don't know who we are - we are Yaxley Runners. Despite the name, we meet every week in Hampton, Monday for seniors and Friday for juniors.
W
e're a friendly running club, open to runners of all abilities, whatever your speed. Our Monday night sessions will see sub-three hour marathon runners joined by those who will be running and walking just a mile or two. We especially enjoy welcoming people who are
new to running. The thought of turning up to a running club full of fit, fast runners (we wish!) can be pretty intimidating when you've only been lacing up your trainers for a couple of weeks and can barely run around the block without stopping. Each week we have two runners on a beginner’s rota, who will accompany any
newcomers at a pace they feel comfortable with. One of the things we are most proud of at Yaxley Runners is our thriving juniors section. This meets every Friday, at 6pm and children from the age of 8 are welcome to attend. If you're a keen runner, or you just want to give running a try, we'd love to hear from you.
Just pop down on a Monday night if you're interested. Or visit our website at yaxleyrunners.org.uk for more information.

Lakota (Lover of Nature)
In April, signs of spring are evident around Hampton everywhere you look
T
he rising temperature of the air and soil and the lengthening hours of daylight, encourage the resurgence of life. Around the lakes, the hawthorn bushes are hanging heavily with white flowers and the trees are turning that lovely shade of bright, spring green. April flowers, such as the primrose and celandine, are adding colour to the burgeoning scene. High in the skies, returning house martins swoop and dive to catch the early insects. Blue tits and blackbirds may already be busy raising their first brood of the year and those
with a keen ear may well hear the first calls of the cuckoo. The mute swans on the Hampton lakes will have laid their eggs and we can all look forward to the next brood of waddling, grey cygnets. In the lakes, both frogs and toads will have spawned, with tiny specks of black growing daily into tadpoles. Certainly, frogs are in abundance in the lake by Horseshoe Way; in fact one has to be careful to avoid them when they decide to have a wander across the lakeside path. Butterflies are emerging from their winter cocoons and adding colour to the skies. Bumblebees have emerged from hibernation
and are seeking the nectar and pollen from the spring flowers. They are looking for, or may have already found, somewhere to build their new nest. Hedgehogs will have woken from their hibernation, or beginning to wake, depending on the warmth of the weather. The air is full of the sound of songbirds - notice that the dawn chorus gradually gets louder the further into spring we go. I have just discovered that there is an International Dawn Chorus Day, which is always the first Sunday of May, around the time when the chorus reaches its peak. Enjoy!

MONEYMATTERS
by Pete Bird, Bird & Co Certified Public Accountants
Do you have any tax or business questions? If so email Pete Bird of Bird & Co info@birdandco.ltd and if of general interest we will publish them here.
A tax return can be filed as soon as the tax year ends, once you have collected all that is required, you do not have to wait until the following January. It is far better and less stressful to get everything together sooner rather than later, as then you will know sooner what the dreaded tax bill in the following January, will be. Also, if your tax return is prepared before the second payment on account in July is due and if your tax is less than the previous year, you can apply to reduce it. Lesley, who keeps our offices running smoothly, has compiled a few tips to help. Lesley’s Housekeeping Tips for the Tax Year Ended 5 April 2017 If you were scrambling around last tax year to get everything ready for your accountant, or even yourself, to enable your tax return to be prepared, why not follow these few tips to make life easier? As soon as you receive information relevant for the tax year 2016/2017, make a file (or obtain a proverbial shoebox) to keep everything together. These are a few items you should obtain and keep: P60’s or P45’s; Pension statements; If you are a landlord and claim mortgage interest relief, keep the mortgage statement(s) that are in respect of let property; Obtain and keep bank/building society interest certificates for all accounts that pay you interest; Keep all dividend vouchers in respect of dividends received; Don’t forget that if your spouse or civil partner has not used all their personal allowances, they may transfer 10% of their PA to you, providing you are not a higher rate tax payer. Tips for Self Employed and Owner Managed Limited Companies: Obtain and keep invoices and/or receipts for all expenses. HMRC could refuse your tax relief or input VAT if you have no evidence of an expense without a receipt or VAT invoice. Also, fuel receipts etc. do fade if left in sunlight;
Keeping Peterborough
Obtain and keep all bank statements where business transactions are made; Write up your records on a regular basis, there is nothing worse than having to write your records up for a long period. These are only a few ideas to consider and there may be many other “housekeeping” matters you could attend to make your life easier (and your accountant's) and take some of the stress out of preparing tax returns.
Dates to remember - April 2017 1 April 2017 Due date for Corporation tax for companies with an accounting period ended 30 June 2016. 7 April 2017 Due date for filing and payment of VAT for the period ended 28 February, unless you submit a paper return then the date is 31 March. Monthly dates: 19th of the month: Due date for postal payments of PAYE, NIC and CIS deductions and on-line filing deadline for CIS300 monthly return and final FPS for 2016/17 to HMRC. 22nd of the month: Due date for electronic payments of PAYE, NIC and CIS deductions to HMRC.

livinginhampton In association with
VANDALS DESTROY MEMORIAL BENCH AT CROWN LAKES It was very sad news to find that Crown Lakes Country Park was recently subjected to exceptional vandalism. The perpetrator had caused thousands of pounds of damage to what is, normally, a peaceful and tranquil place for Hampton residents.
B
enches and fencing were broken and handrails which provide safe routes across the water - were also damaged and thrown into the water. Trees were damaged or even cut down. The damage left behind also included sharp, broken pieces of wood and exposed screws from broken benches which could easily have put people and wildlife in danger. The worst of the vandalism was to a memorial bench, provided in memory of a former London Brickyard worker, Mr Claypole, who worked on the Hampton's site and enjoyed walks around Crown Lakes. Michael Neath, one of four members of the O&H Hampton maintenance team, made this
bench and had to share the awful news with the family - that such a lovely gesture had been ruined by another’s total disregard. Michael will now be building a new bench due to the extent of the damage. Local residents were quick to alert us to the vandalism that occurred and volunteers came forward offering to help too. Thankfully, the O&H Hampton maintenance team were on hand to make some temporary repairs while they were also dealing with the after-effects of Storm Doris. Full repairs have now been made. At the moment, it’s unknown whether any of those causing the vandalism live in the Hamptons, but the crime has been reported to the police and
we will work with them in their investigation. While this vandalism has been the worst in the Hampton area to date, there have been other incidents including damage to safety throw lines and to the local playgrounds. Everyone is now on high alert to report all such incidents. Crown Lakes and many other features across Hampton, are willingly provided and maintained by O&H Hampton to help create the beautiful environment that makes the Hamptons so special. These parks, lakes and green spaces consistently come out as the number one reason why people love the Hamptons.
What can you do? So, what can you do if you see or suspect vandalism happening near you? If you do see anything, please contact the police on the non-emergency telephone number 101, then contact O&H Hampton. Also if it is safe to do so, send pictures. The police will follow up these incidents – we had one event where a resident sent us photos and the police knew the culprits immediately and were able to take action. Let's hope the perpetrator is caught soon and in the meantime, our thanks go to everyone who reported the damage and offered to help.
But while we ask you to help and to increase your vigilance in helping to report these heinous acts, please do not put yourself in any danger. Vandalism is a crime and those causing the damage need to be dealt with by the police. If you or others are in danger, or a serious crime is happening and the criminal is still at the scene or nearby, phone 999 straight away.

Ultherapy see the beauty of sound This amazing treatment lifts and sculpts the skin non-invasively, gradually from the inside out without surgery or downtime. The treatment zones for Ultherapy are the upper face, lower face, neck and décolletage. The microfocused ultrasound energy is delivered to three skin depths, including the layer targeted by surgeons during a surgical facelift. This triggers a natural regenerative response, which stimulates the growth of new collagen and elastin. Book a consultation with our doctor to see what it can do for you.
After hours of research, you find yourself down the beauty aisle, committing to the right cosmetic product for you. We all like to splurge on make-up but what you didn’t know, is that you’re probably not getting your money’s worth. All those times you have thought your cosmetic products have run out or needed replacing, there were ways to make them last longer. Here are eight helpful hacks for your make-up and beauty products to ensure they last as long as possible... and save you a few pennies along the way.
to save every last drop of your cosmetic products
1. Cut open bottles
5. Mascara in hot water
Scoop out any product hiding within corners of plastic bottles or tubes of hair and beauty products.
When your mascara is dry or clumpy, soak it in hot water to loosen the product along the side of the tube.
2. Add moisturiser to foundation
6. Melt your lipstick together
Pour a little face moisturiser into your ‘empty’ foundation, shake it well and voila! You have a tinted moisturiser.
3. Fix broken powders
Freeze your lipstick after melting the bottom of the broken piece with a lighter and reattaching it to the bullet.
7. Wash make-up brushes
Pour rubbing alcohol on crushed blusher, bronzer or eyeshadow powder and press it back together.
Wash and condition your make-up brushes to make them last longer as oil, dirt and bacteria gets trapped in the bristles.
4. Re-use false lashes
8. Airtight-seal nail polish
Carefully clean glue residue and make-up off the falsies with a spoolie brush and they’re good to go for another use.
Air can thicken up the nail polish formula, so always cap the bottle tightly and remove the crust around the thread to keep the seal airtight.

Alwalton Hall
New beauty and wellness sanctuary to open! Peterborough will have a new beauty and wellness day spa offering when Alwalton Hall opens its doors to customers.
The former home of Perkins Engines, founder Frank Perkins, has been undergoing a transformation into a beauty and wellness sanctuary.
A
team of craftsmen, tradesmen and decorators have been carefully preparing the interior and grounds of the Grade II listed building. In addition to the beautiful relaxation areas and Regency lounges, clients will enjoy five specially themed treatment rooms, plus the former three-room guest suite which has been adapted for the ultimate in pampering. The Georgian country house in picturesque Alwalton village is set in five acres of landscaped grounds. It offers a range of beauty and wellness treatments including: facials, waxing, pedicures, manicures, massage and specialist skincare including
the latest CACI non-surgical antiageing treatments. There is a 15m outdoor, heated swimming pool and spa pool, with dedicated changing rooms and sun terrace for clients on half and full day packages for much of the year. The management team has recruited a team of seven highlyqualified therapists, who have undertaken additional specialist product and treatment training with CACI, OPI, and premium skincare brand Decleor. Maggie Jones, who owns the Hall with her husband, Brian, said, “We want to create a very different beauty and wellness experience for clients and feel that it will appeal to a
wide cross section from those wanting regular treatments, in a wonderful setting, to those who see this as an occasional pampering ‘treat’. It will also be popular for gifts and special occasions.” The Hall offers a range of treatments and packages including half and full days, complete with lunch and/or afternoon tea in the Regency Drawing Room – just perfect for those special occasions or for gifts. Special corporate packages are also available. To book an appointment or to buy gift vouchers, please visit our website: www.alwaltonhall. com or call our reception team on 01733 391166.

This will enable you to plan your outdoor activities and travel routes, safe in the knowledge you’ll stay dry! The project team – consisting of environmental charity PECT, Meniscus, Anglia Ruskin University and Loughborough University – has joined forces to launch a brand new app called Hyperlocal Rainfall, funded by Innovate UK, the government’s technology agency. The aim of the app is to enable people to obtain incredibly accurate, shortterm rainfall predictions, specific to an individual’s journey or location, which can be planned, viewed and saved within the app. This is the first project of its kind and will allow people to plan their trips and outdoor activities whilst taking the weather into account. After being successfully trialled in Peterborough, the
app is now being launched nationally and at the moment is free to download! Every participant who downloads the app for free now, will always retain unpaid access to it. The feedback from testers has been overwhelmingly positive, with many reporting that the app has been incredibly accurate in its predictions. One tester said, “I am bowled over by it, it is so much better than anything else out there for telling what is going on.” Now, the project team is giving users the chance to win a £50 Amazon voucher! Anyone who downloads the app, uses it and gives feedback on the form that pops-up at the end of a journey, will be in with a chance of winning! There will be several draws for any new users in February and more in March, for those that continue to use it and send feedback forms. More information on the app can be found at www.pect.org.uk/ HyperlocalRainfall. It can also be downloaded for free from Google Play - just search for ‘Hyperlocal Rainfall’

EDUC ATION Hampton College (Secondary Phase)
Dragons Den meets Hampton College! A very exciting half term within Business Studies, as three young entrepreneurs in Year 11 were awarded the opportunity to meet Peter Jones and the Duke of York at Buckingham Palace, through a National Tycoons in Schools competition they entered through the Business Studies Department. We embarked on our journey on Monday 6th March, to meet the other seven finalist teams at the gates of the Palace, before going through security and entering to the BOW room to set up the students display. Once set up, the students had the opportunity to meet and greet the other teams before the ceremony took place, whereby speeches and the official awards were given. Hani, Brogan and Oliver in Year 11 remained composed and
calm throughout the presentation and were awarded the fantastic achievement of second in their key stage - only to miss out to the overall winners of the competition. After the ceremony, there was an opportunity to showcase all of the team’s hard work and efforts throughout the process amongst the celebrities and industry professionals from companies such as: the Lloyd’s Group, Thomas Cook, Canon and many more. The students were able to demonstrate their Indulge products to Mr Jones and the Duke. Overall, the competition was fantastic, with students representing the College with a professional and enthusiastic approach to the whole process and a welldeserved place within the National competition. Their resilience and dedication throughout the trading period showed dedication and entrepreneurial spirit.

Hargate Primary Our annual Year 4 residential trip to Stibbington took place at the beginning of March. The children had a fantastic few days, despite the ever changeable weather and engaged in lots of fantastic activities including: a village treasure hunt, chariot racing, pond dipping and investigating Roman artefacts! We also celebrated World Book Day, when the children came dressed as their favourite book characters. There were some amazing outfits! To round off the celebrations, our Bedtime stories evening at the end of March saw the children come back into school at 6.00pm in their pyjamas, to enjoy cookies and milk whilst listening to a bedtime story. It was a really fun evening! In other news, we have been learning about Fair Trade and held a Fair Trade stall where the children had an opportunity to spend their pocket money on a small gift of
their choice. We have also been participating in the National Big Pedal campaign and children and staff have been encouraged to cycle or scoot their usual journey to and from school wherever possible. Well done to our Year 6 Football team who won the Hampton College Festival recently. We also played in the EFL kids cup regional finals at Milton Keynes. The boys won 2 out of their 5 games and although they didn’t reach the semi- finals, they played some amazing football! And finally, we are delighted to announce that we have been awarded the EAL Mark Gold Award. This is in recognition for the work we do supporting pupils with English as an Additional Language in our school. Thank you to Miss Hammond, our EAL Coordinator, and all the staff in our school for their continued hard work and to parents for working with and supporting us.

Chocolate Poisoning We’re sure you know, but it's good to reiterate it at this time of year…that chocolate is poisonous for our pets. There’s a few special occasions when chocolate is a popular gift - Mother’s Day and Easter are coming. Poisonings this time of year are more common so we thought we’d tell you more about it.
T
here are a few ingredients in chocolate that aren’t good for our pets. The digestive systems of cats and dogs cannot cope with a high content of fats and sugars in their diets and it can contribute to a painful condition called pancreatitis. This is inflammation of the pancreas, the organ responsible for producing digestive enzymes and hormones such as insulin. Once a pet has had pancreatitis, they will often suffer bouts again in the future. It is treatable, but can be fatal in some cases. The main poisonous ingredient of chocolate you need to be aware of is a compound called theobromine, which is similar to caffeine. Like caffeine, it is a stimulant and is responsible for the famed lift some people get from eating chocolate. As a
stimulant, it affects the central nervous system, increases heart rate, dilates blood vessels and stimulates urine production. In the pet’s body, all this adds up to serious consequences, including an often lethal over-stimulation of the heart.
Why is chocolate so toxic to our pets and yet we can eat it with no ill effects? It might surprise you to learn that theobromine can also be poisonous to people! It would just take a very large quantity to have a reaction (so don’t panic, you can still safely eat chocolate). The difference between us and our pets is the digestive systems. Cats’ and dogs’ systems are not as efficient at metabolising (breaking down) theobromine and the process is much slower. This means
our pets are far more sensitive to the compound.
Toxic levels Like most poisons, effects are determined by a few factors. Theobromine toxicity levels is dependent on: • Type of chocolate – dark chocolate has a higher theobromine content per 100g than milk chocolate • Quantity of chocolate – it goes without saying that the more chocolate consumed, the more theobromine that needs to be metabolised by the digestive system • Size of pet – it takes less theobromine to reach toxic levels in smaller pets Remember, chocolate is also poisonous to cats, but cases are less common than with dogs.

The Grand National Will you have a flutter on April 8th? The Grand National is one of those institutions, like the Oxford and Cambridge Boat Race, or the final of Strictly Come Dancing, where even those who never set foot in a betting shop open their wallet and enter the office sweepstake. But did you know that in April 3rd 1993, the worldfamous horse race was reduced to a shambles? A disastrous sequence of events began just before the race was due to start - when protestors ran onto the track near the first fence. They were removed and the race officials asked horses and riders to line up again. Then there were two false starts, caused by horses becoming tangled with the starting tape. On the second false start, although the red recall flag was waved, it didn’t unfurl, and 30 of the 39 riders raced away. Members of the crowd and officials all tried to recall the jockeys but without success. 11 riders completed the first circuit before they pulled up and seven riders never realised anything was wrong. They completed the gruelling course and raced to the finish line. Esha Ness, a 50-1 outsider trained by Jenny Pitman and ridden by John White, crossed the line first but the race was declared void, depriving the horse’s owner, Patrick Bancroft, of the £76000 prize money. However, she went on to win again two years later, with Royal Athlete.

Phone companies are waging war on
nuisance callers You’re just about to sit down to your favourite soap or are in the middle of cooking dinner / bathing the kids the phone rings - and it's one of those calls.
I
t is estimated that around 30 million nuisance calls are made each week. Did you know that the average Brit receives four nuisance calls a week? More often than not, they are direct sales calls or automated ‘offers’. It is little wonder then that according to research by BT, 60 percent of people find receiving
these kinds of nuisance and cold calls stressful. BT is one of the companies fighting back, with a new breakthrough service to help manage the situation; by developing a system called BT Call Protect to help customers avoid nuisance calls on their landline - by diverting a whopping 30 million calls a week to junk voicemail. Other service providers are also putting customers first, with Sky and Virgin offering their own system to deal with nuisance calls. Check with your provider to see what they offer. It may be worth mentioning, that at Safe Local Trades, none of our professional and recommended tradesmen operate a ‘cold calling’ approach. Our user friendly website www.safelocaltrades.co.uk offers customers looking for a particular
trade the opportunity to contact the professionals through an online enquiry form or by telephoning 0800 014 1832. It’s safe to say that all our time is precious and we don’t want to be disturbed, or harassed in our own homes by these calls. Did you know that there is a way to curb these calls? The Telephone Preference Service (TPS) is a free service which enables you to join the official register to opt out of unsolicited sales and marketing calls. Remember, it is a legal requirement for telemarketers NOT to call a TPS subscribed number after 28 days, but you should start noticing a gradual decline once registered. To find out more visit www.tpsonline.org.uk or telephone 0345 070 0707
You can protect your privacy even further by not giving out your telephone contact details to a third party during online surveys, quizzes or competitions. And if you continue to be plagued by people telling you that you have won a dream holiday, offering to help you after your ‘car accident’ or claim to have a PPI reward for you – you can report them online at (https://complaints.tpsonline. org.uk/consumer/complaint)
by Eileen Le Voi
Safe Local Trades can recommend trusted and reliable tradespeople across a wide range of areas – all of which come with a customer seal of approval. Go to www.safelocaltrades.com or telephone 01733 530019

The simple way to a lovely lawn If your lawn is tired, full of weed and moss, then don’t worry as help is on hand. Sisters, Sarah and Jo, who run the award winning Peterborough based GreenThumb lawn care business, can soon get your lawn into great shape for summer. Here they answer some frequently asked questions. Is my lawn beyond repair? In most cases the answer is 'no' and even after our first visit you’ll notice a huge difference! How do I start with GreenThumb? It’s simple, just contact us to arrange a free, no obligation, lawn analysis. We’ll do a thorough health check of your lawn, measure it up and let you know the price options. Prices depend on your lawn size and start at just £15 per treatment for a lawn that’s 40 square metres or less - cheaper than DIY and completely hassle free!
Book your FREE lawn analysis now
How frequently do you treat my lawn? Our basic service provides four seasonal treatments designed to give you a beautiful lawn throughout the year. Three of these are through the grass growing season and consist of a granular fertiliser to feed the lawn and a selective herbicide to control the weeds. The fourth treatment is applied through the darker, damper months of autumn/ winter and this specifically tackles moss, whilst also helping to strengthen the lawn. Many of our
customers also ask us to hollow-tine aerate and scarify their lawns annually and these mechanical treatments help to address the underlying causes of moss. How does the service work? It’s easy. We give you advance notice by phone, letter, email or text when we’re due to come, but if the date isn’t convenient we can always change it. We’ve got three technicians, Jim, Richard and Dan, who apply the treatments and all of us hold the National Proficiency Training Council (NPTC) licence for the safe use of pesticides. Do I have to be at home? The majority of customers aren’t at home when we call. We’re totally self-sufficient and will carry out the treatment as long as we have access to your lawns. Are the treatments safe for children? Yes. We do recommend however that children (and cats and dogs) are kept off the lawn for 1-2 hours to give any products that are applied time to dry.
If you’d like a lovely lawn, start by booking your FREE lawn analysis now and get expert help from GreenThumb. Contact Sarah or Jo on 01733 755028 or email them at peterborough@greenthumb.co.uk www.greenthumb.co.uk

Can you taste the difference? Sweet gluten-free recipes to tickle everyone’s taste buds this Easter!
Chocolate Fudge Traybake In recent years, supermarkets have recognised the demand for gluten-free alternatives and the majority now carry their own ‘freefrom’ ranges. However, whilst undoubtedly representing choice for the consumer, these vacuum-packed products are often a poor substitute for home-baking. It’s therefore well worth making your own; not only is gluten-free flour as easy to use as wheat flour, I’d defy anyone to tell the difference between the end results!

I present to you, the recipe to low fat, gluten-free brownies. The secret ingredient is kidney beans, and I’m sure you’re thinking…what? But trust me, you don’t taste it. If you’re not afraid to try something new, I suggest you try this delicious recipe.

The event is organised and solely funded by KingsGate Community Church as we have around 200 members living in Hampton and feel this a great way for us to bless our community. The whole event is totally free and starts by registering
at Hampton Vale Community Centre any time between 10 and 12. You will be sent off to look for clues that lead you around a trail through Hampton. Along the way you will be able to join in ‘Wellie Wanging’, “Space Hopper Racing’ and enjoy the view from the top of The Tump!
