It’s a funny old world As I write this, the weather is improving, and good weather makes most of us smile. Of course there are some who will be going through difficult times at the moment so even some sunshine can’t improve their mood. Like my friend Sid who’s just been the victim of ID theft - he’s now called “S”! Did you hear about the man in Hampton Hargate who drank a pint of Domestos? He went clean round the bend. But then I wasn’t too happy myself when I looked out of my window last night to see a bloke stealing the garden gate! I didn’t like to say anything in case he took offence. We’re lucky to have lots of great businesses here in Hampton, but I have been a bit disappointed lately. Some tradesmen

4

are so unreliable. I keep asking people to come round and fix my doorbell, but they never do! In the meantime I’m developing a business of my own. I’ve worked out that my new shadow puppet theatre could make millions, but that’s just projected figures. That’s not my only business venture; I’ve invented a kitchen cleaner that kills 0.1% of all known germs. I plan to sell the secret to Dettol. I got in touch with my inner self today. That’s the last time I buy Tesco Value toilet roll. After queuing up at the checkout yesterday, I said to the cashier, “Can you do this any cheaper?” “I’m afraid not,” she replied, “If we did it for you then we’d have to do it for everybody.” I said, “Yeah, but it’s got today’s date on it. If nobody buys it then it’s just

going to get thrown away.” “Look sir,” she sighed, “You’re holding up the queue. Do you want the newspaper or not?” When I came out of Tesco, two blondes were in a parking bay trying to unlock the door of their Mercedes with a coat hanger. They tried and tried to get the door open, but they couldn’t. The girl with the coat hanger stopped for a moment to catch her breath, and her friend said anxiously, “Hurry up! It’s starting to rain and the top is down.” Yes, it always seems difficult for some people. Like the paranoid, atheist, dyslexic, insomniac. He stayed up all night worrying if there really was a dog! Keep smiling...

Reader’s letters

Dear Hampton Gazette,

I live on Lakeview way; the lake attracts many people wanting to fish and as far as I know you can fish as long as you are over 12 years of age and have a fishing licence. Because of where I live I see many people of all ages fishing. They look responsible and have obviously invested in professional fishing equipment. They treat the fish with respect, perhaps taking a photo of the bigger catches, but then always putting the fish back humanely and from what I can see; these fishermen take great care with their fishing lines so as not to endanger any other wild life. So my question is... Why on earth do a certain few Hampton residents keep complaining, mainly to the police, who I’m sure have better things to do, about these fishermen? During the half term I saw quite a few teenagers fishing responsibly. The police turned up again because of a complaint. The police left after checking their licences. Would you prefer that these teenage boys were causing a nuisance in a shopping centre or hanging about on the street looking for trouble? Are you not pleased that these kids have found a hobby, an interest that to my knowledge has never done anyone any harm?

Play Bowls

at Yaxley Broadway Bowls Club (Behind The Farmers on Broadway)

Open days on...

Sunday 27th April and Saturday 3rd May (10am-12 and 2-4pm) Have you ever wondered what is like to play bowls? Have you wanted to try and not known where to go? Then why not come along to one of our tutored open days at Yaxley Bowls Club and give it a try. A Tutored Bowls Day represents the perfect introduction to club life for any new participant and is the perfect way to meet people and be introduced to the sport of bowls. Bowls isn’t just for pensioners, although they are welcome. Did you know that the ladies world championship was just won by an 18 year old schoolgirl? Yaxley Broadway Bowls Club has teams in 7 different leagues, as well as playing many non-competitive friendly games. So whether you are interested in playing competitively, or just for fun, there is a place for everyone.

Please remember next time you want to call the police because you’ve seen a fisherman on Hampton, please remember this lovely environment we live in is not only for you to enjoy in your own way, but everyone else has a right to enjoy in their way to.

Hello!

We are a crafty lot at Hampton WI! Not in the sneaky sense, of course, but in the “We just love making things” sense. February and March’s meetings were no exception. February saw us making Kumihimo bracelets and angel pendants and March saw us learning basic glass painting, which we all loved.

The thing about being a member of Hampton WI is that it’s not just the great friends you’ll make, or the laugh a minute meetings you will attend, but it’s also about learning new skills and finding new hobbies that you can enjoy. We have also had a brilliant extra get together just for the purposes of drinking wine and eating puddings, lots of them and they were all different too. Now there’s a hobby I could easily get into!

So ladies, why not come along to our next meeting on Thursday 17th April? We meet at Hampton Children’s Centre (behind Hampton Hargate School) from 7:00pm and you would all be very welcome.

Fantastic news for Hampton Vale Primary School! The team at Hampton Vale Primary School is celebrating the results of the school’s latest Ofsted inspection, which sees every key area of the school’s work assessed as “good”. Inspectors visited the school in February and found that, within a “vibrant and exciting curriculum”, the school’s children are enjoying consistently good or outstanding teaching. The children’s achievements and behaviour were highlighted, with the Ofsted team describing children as “very polite” and their attitudes to learning as “very good”. The inspectors commented that “pupils’ spiritual, moral, social and cultural education is a particular strength of the school”. Also highlighted were: the school’s rigorous tracking of the achievements and progress of every child; the good or outstanding progress made by more able children and by children who have special educational needs; the fact that bullying is rare and when it does happen, it is tackled firmly and decisively. Headteacher Anne Byrne said: “Working together to help all of our children achieve the very best remains at the very heart of all that we strive to do at Hampton Vale. The incredibly hard work that our outstanding team - of children and adults alike - continues to put in is underlined by the Ofsted findings. I know that they are all very proud, as I am, of all our achievements.”

Hampton Wildlife

by Lakota (Lover of nature)

Creating a buzz in the warmer weather The warmer weather has awakened many creatures, one of which buzzed determinedly against my window the other day. It caught my attention particularly because of its size. Clearly it was a queen bumblebee seeking out a potential place to begin this season’s hive. She would have hibernated during the winter months somewhere where it was well hidden, perhaps a leaf pile or a compost heap.

Although they look large and menacing the bumble bee is much less aggressive than the smaller honey bee. They will not sting unless threatened. Unlike the honey bee which loses its sting and then dies if it attacks, the bumble bee retains its sting and carries on its way.

As the weather warmed it sensed this and eased itself out of its long sleep to prepare for reproducing. It would be the only survivor of the previous year’s nest.

A bumblebee is a creature to be encouraged because it will pollinate your flowers and fruit bushes causing only good as it bumbles away. Bumblebees produce very little honey, just a few grams enough to feed their young. Their nest can most often be found near the ground but is rarely larger in size than half a grapefruit. The queen constructs a ball of wax and pollen in which she lays her eggs. These eventually hatch into worker bees. These workers take over the fulltime job of collecting pollen and nectar whilst the queen continues her job of producing more eggs. During the late summer the queen changes to produce eggs which

Free Email Software Tip Do you view your email on the internet via web page like outlook.com, yahoo.co.uk or virginmedia.com? Webmail works well but you have to keep logging in to get to your emails. My tip this month is to try using Microsoft Windows Live Mail. It’s a piece of free email software that looks and works in a similar way to Microsoft Outlook. Working very well with almost all email accounts you’ll be able to avoid having to constantly log into your email and you’ll be able to send documents and pictures very easily from Windows once Microsoft Windows Live Mail is installed.

hatch into the next season’s queens and male bees (drones) whose only function is to mate with the queens. The drones, by the way, have no sting at all. Come the first drop in temperature as autumn passes into winter the old queen and the drones will die and the only survivors will be the queens, who leave the nest to find hibernation sites for hibernation. And then the cycle begins again. Apparently the bumblebee has been in decline over the past few years and there is an organisation which has been set up to encourage their conservation and to educate us about them. Their website has a useful tool to help us to plant flowers that will encourage bumble bees into our gardens and thus help to increase their numbers. It is the reduction in the number of flowers in the countryside that have meant that there isn’t the same amount of food for the bumble bee. The Bumblebee Conservation Trust can be found at www.bumblebeeconservation.org and contains interesting facts, how we can help and how to join Bumblebee Trust.

Hampton Community Church Spring is a wonderful time of the year with the days getting longer and the glorious sunshine making us feel a bit more cheerful. It is also a time of new beginnings. As a church we are beginning something new in April. On the first Wednesday, 2 April, we will be starting Live Lounge at Costa Coffee in Serpentine Green at 7.30pm. There will be a professional band covering different musical genres performing every month and of course delicious coffee on offer. This is a great opportunity to give something new to the community of Hampton and create a space where people can have a good evening out. We would love for you to join us for this event on the first Wednesday of every month. Also the church meets every Sunday at 5pm at the meeting room in Hampton Leisure Centre located on Clayburn Road and it would be wonderful to see you there.

Blessings,

Amy Armstrong

Hampton News Health Better information means better care

Care.data

You might have missed the leaflet that would have come through your letterbox last month explaining Care.data, but all 26 million households in England were supposed to have been sent one. It was titled “better information means better care” and looked much like any other bit of junk mail. The data that will be extracted from GP systems includes: referrals, NHS prescriptions, your family history, vaccinations, blood test results, body mass index, smoking/alcohol habits etc -- dating back to April 2013.

However, the leaflet’s contents are extremely important and shouldn’t be ignored. It explained that patient data stored in GP surgeries across the UK is to be extracted and placed in a central set of databases. It has been accepted that this was not communicated well and has caused anxiety about use or potential abuse of personal data, and the introduction of the scheme has been therefore been delayed.

Hampton News writing desks to make a Literacy shed, for the children to use to read and write in. Perhaps you own or work for a company that supplies fake grass, as we would like to be able to have an area covered with this. Part of this courtyard will become a growing area; would you be able to help transform this area or would you be able to provide some bags of compost, bark chippings, pots and seeds for the children to start to plant and understand how things grow? I know that it sometimes seems that schools are always asking for help, but we are not funded by Peterborough City Council for these type of projects and we rely on the generosity of parents and businesses to help. Could the company you work for help in some way? We have a new wing for our Year 5 and 6 children, which looks wonderful, and as I said above a fantastic new outdoor learning area for Reception and we need to ensure that our other years have access to the same type of facilities as well. We want all our children to have access to as many different learning environments as possible. We have already obtained a small donation to help towards this, but we do need more.

Easter – when the shops are full of chocolate eggs, chicks, bunnies, and bonnets. However, the greatest symbol of Easter and the Christian faith is the empty Cross, for it reminds us that not only did Jesus die, but that he rose again on the third day, conquering death. His rising to new life transformed lives when it happened, and is still transforming lives today. The Cross speaks of the love of God, and eternal life for all who believe and put their trust in Him. Loving relationships are at the heart of the Christian faith and it’s that love that we endeavour to share at CSK Hampton Church. We currently meet every Sunday morning at 10am at Hampton Vale Primary School. Whether you are a believer looking to grow in your faith, or whether you would merely like to explore the claims of the Christian faith, you would be most welcome to join us, especially on Easter Sunday as we celebrate together. Happy Easter.

CSK local church for local people. Christ the Servant King ‘Buy a Brick’ Campaign Thank you to everyone who supported the CSK ‘Buy a Brick’ campaign through the Gazette. A total of 44 residents bought bricks as a result of the articles in the Gazette. We are grateful to all of you and to Lorraine Clark for supporting this community venture. The bricks will be laid at the rear of the church and will be a permanent reminder of the wonderful support given by the people of Hampton. The new church centre will be a resource for the whole of Hampton and we look forward to welcoming everyone when it opens around September time.

I am sure most of the residents of Hampton have seen the progress of the new church building.

These include both sides having independent legal advisors, full and frank disclosure of financial information and a long enough period before the wedding day for the agreement to be signed, sealed and delivered.

We have come to a time where we need to concentrate on the internal fixtures and fittings. To raise the funds CSK Church are wanting to create a cookery book designed by local people. Send in your favourite recipes for starters, mains, puddings, cakes and biscuits. Please print your name against each of your recipes.

We want the children of Hampton to be involved as well, with some great and funky ideas on food they like. We would like this cookery book to be different from the ‘norm’ and to include drawings, diagrams and any hand written recipes to make it more personal. We will also be running a competition for the best design for the front cover which will be open to all ages. A prize will be awarded for the winning entry. Please send your recipes or design to hamptoncookerybook@gmail.com or post to the Vicarage. All entries must be in by 01-May-2014

The discussions in legal circles now are that the case authority will be converted into statute law, but this is not going to happen overnight. In the meantime the DIY trade is doing good business. Family lawyers are familiar with the DIY divorce petition, which can be rescued by the County Court if it is filed in a badly drafted condition (which often happens) but a defective DIY Pre-nup is not going to come to light unless it is needed, some time in the future. At that point it may well be found not to be worth the paper it is written on and therefore, proceed at your peril. You could be left with an agreement null and void and essentially worthless if the marriage was to end in divorce. Pre Nups are becoming increasingly popular in the UK, especially to safeguard the wealth that people have built up between a first and second marriage and to protect the interests of existing children but if you want to make sure that it is going to be water tight, seek specialist advice from a family law Solicitor. Belinda Smith and her associate Michele Fielding are trained collaborative lawyers and members of the local group based in Peterborough. Hampton Parish Council by Kate Day, Parish Clerk

E: hamptonparishcouncil@gmail.com

In the February edition I mentioned that 2014 is a very important year for Hampton Parish Council as this is our election year and I am delighted that a number of residents have come forward to register an interest in joining the Parish Council. The next stage is the really important one, as the ‘Publication of notice of election’ 25 days before the poll on 22 May 2014, is the legally defined start of the process for your Parish Council to be elected for the next four years. The notice will be formally ‘published’ on the two nominated Parish Council Notice Boards, located at the Hampton Hargate and Hampton Vale shops and promoted on the website and through our Facebook page. Candidates then have until 4pm on Thursday 24 April to deliver their nomination papers to the City Council. As there are two wards in Hampton, each with seven councillors, forming the joint parish of Hampton Hargate and Hampton Vale, collectively known as Hampton Parish Council residents can be nominated for election in either ward. I will keep a register of applications at this point, to allow residents more chance of election as, at this stage, one ward may have more valid nominations than the other ward, potentially leaving one ward undersubscribed with available vacancies and the other contested unnecessarily! Each nomination must be accurately completed, with both a nomination form and consent to nomination form, returned to the Parish Clerk or Returning Officer in person at Peterborough

City Council by the qualifying date. The Returning Officer for Peterborough City Council then publishes a list, a statement of those nominated for each ward. The next stage depends on the number of valid nominations. As there are seven places for each of the wards, which constitute the Hampton Parish Council, if there are less than seven valid nominations for each ward, those listed will be automatically elected in May; as this will be classed as an uncontested election with any vacancies filled by the co-option on to the Parish Council by the elected members. If there are more than seven valid nominations for either or both wards, there will be a Parish Election on 22 May 2014 for the relevant ward(s) and local residents will have the chance to choose their Parish Councillors through the democratic process of voting in the poll. Full details of the requirements for becoming a Parish Councillor can be found on the Parish Council website, under the heading ‘Interested in becoming a councillor?’ on the ‘About the Parish Council – who does what?’ tab. Printed copies of this information may be obtained by telephoning or emailing the Parish Office.

Schools Little Acorns Day Nursery and Montessori School This month Little Acorns have been continuing to take advantage of the bad weather by making mud pies and jumping in the puddles. Our pre-school children recently enjoyed a trip to the local shops. This taught the children a variety of things including road safety, stranger danger, and of course what the different shops have to offer. We visited the fruit and vegetable shop where the children were able to choose fresh fruit for their snack. The highlight of this trip (according to the children) was visiting the pet shop to look at the parrots. We have been looking for worms in the garden which caused great excitement! This has led on to Preschool looking at mini beasts, and reading associated stories such as The Hungry Caterpillar. There were some fantastic wiggly worms drawn by the children, and also made out of play dough. Also this month we have been celebrating Mother’s day, by making and decorating cards. There was even a little surprise for the children to take home to their mummies! If you would like to enquire about our Nursery please contact: 01733 244000 or visit www.littleacorns-daynursery.co.uk

Following Following last last year’s year’s success success we we decided decided to to take take part part in in the the Big Big Pedal Pedal again again in in the the first first two two weeks weeks of of March. March. The children and staff were encouraged to cycle or scoot their usual journey to and from school as part of the interschool competition and we are eagerly awaiting the results to see if we beat our score from last year! Dr. Bike was also on hand on launch day to offer a free bike safety check to those who wanted it. We have also been working closely with the Sustrans BikeIt officers to encourage people to walk and cycle as well as travel actively and safely and are pleased to say that we have been awarded with the Bronze School Mark Award! Well done to Miss Porter and everyone for continuing to travel safely, we are now working towards the Silver Award! Hampton Hargate hosted our annual Sports Week in the middle of March. The week was jam packed with sporting related activities which ranged from traditional sporting fixtures such as Cricket, Football and Cross County to the more unusual activities of Aeroball and Buzz Wire. The noise was deafening from our small hall when the Circus Workshop was in full flow with feather balancing and unicycle antics! The children

also enjoyed scaling the dizzy heights of the climbing wall in the spring sunshine! Well done to Mr Godfrey for arranging a super fun filled week! World Book Day took place on Friday 7th March. The children were invited to come in dressed as their favourite book character and we were treated to an array of wonderful costumes from both the staff and the children. There was a Gangster Granny, several Where’s Wallys, lots of princesses and fairies, not forgetting Iron man and Batman and a super Cat in the Hat! The children were invited to bring in a book and they enjoyed a shared reading session in the afternoon! We have also been taking part in Readathon - the UK’s national sponsored reading event which encourages children to read for pleasure while raising money for seriously ill children. Our Readathon was launched on our World Book Day and the children have been busily reading as many books as they can!

The second half of this term has been very busy with lots of exciting events happening at Hampton College (Primary Phase). Our new library has been fitted out with furniture and our first set of school library books are now adorning the shelves, ready for our primary phase readers to start finding out facts and researching new topics.

We ended the term with our Year 4 residential trip to Stibbington and a fantastic performance of ‘Aladdin Trouble’ from our talented Year 5 children – look out for more information on these in the next edition!

World Book Week was a super week in school. The week began with a dressing up day, which saw the children and staff coming to school dressed as their favourite book characters, and the love of books and reading was promoted in school all week through activities in the classrooms and each teacher sharing their favourite book in assembly. The children completed book reviews and character profiles and wrote about why they love reading and the excitement of opening a new book for the first time. During book week we were also very lucky to be invited by our Hampton College music and drama staff to a special dress rehearsal of the Hampton College production “Wizard of Oz”. The children in reception and year one had an exciting walk up to the secondary site, where they were transported into the magical world of Oz. For days afterwards the children were still talking about Dorothy, her friends and the yellow brick road. We were all very proud of what a superb audience they were and we were equally proud of our secondary students who put on such a fantastic show. Special thanks to the secondary phase teachers who worked so hard on the production and really brought theatre to life for our youngest children. Rounding of this half term we have been getting fit with our first Sports Week at Hampton College (Primary Phase). The children have taken part in many in-house sporting activities including rugby, football, rounders and work about healthy eating. At the end of the week we got into the ‘Sports Relief’ spirit by having a non-uniform sportswear day and also scooting, cycling, walking or running the ‘Sports Relief’ mile. It was certainly a fun and active week and the children (and staff ) enjoyed every minute of it. Facebook “f ” Logo

Hampton Vale Primary School Reading took centre stage at Hampton Vale Primary School when children right across the school took part in scores of Book Week activities. The events, which coincided with World Book Day, aimed to develop the children’s love of reading and to encourage them to share reading with their families and with others.

20

The week began with children and staff dressing as some of their favourite characters from books old and new, with characters as diverse as Peter Pan, Harry Potter and Willy Wonka spotted around school. Children and staff had another opportunity to dress up - for a pyjamas and teddies day at the end of the week, when the focus was on sharing bedtime stories. Donations from Tesco at Serpentine Green allowed the children to enjoy afternoon storytimes with hot chocolate and biscuits at the end of pyjamas day. Throughout the week, each class visited the new Hampton Library to find out more about how the staff and services there can help to develop their love for reading. A book quiz and storytelling through the week also added to the Book Week atmosphere. The children have also been raising money for seriously ill children by collecting sponsorship money for reading during the Book Week period. Parents in each year group were also invited to join their children to take part in reading activities during a series of the termly Inspire Workshops. Other Book Week events included a Mad Hatter’s Tea Party event, inspired by Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, for Year Three, which marked the start of the Year group’s new theme about animation. Developing the children’s love for and skills in reading is an ongoing focus for improvement at the school.

Many of you on the Facebook page have been complaining that there is no access to the new Vivacity Premier Fitness gym from the Hampton estate for those wishing to travel there by bike or foot.

I have however found an access path from the back of Tesco to the gym. Here is a step by step guide from a location everyone knows, the Police Station in Hampton Vale, with direct access to the new gym. 1. After starting at the Police Station, face the back of Tesco and walk up to it using the pedestrian walk on the right hand side of the field. 2. When reaching the back of Tesco turn right and head uphill. This will lead to the far back of the Tesco car park. 3. When reaching this stage, follow the path all the way around the car park until reaching the back of the Tesco car wash area. Jut before the underpass to the restaurants there is a small path leading off to the right hand side, follow this path leading to the McDonalds and Brewster’s Pub. 4. After this cross the small road connecting the two areas and you will now be standing outside KFC, Toby Carvery and the new Vivacity Premier Fitness.

I hope you found this guide helpful and easy to use and can now access the new gym on either bike or foot, perfect for adding a tiny bit extra into your weekly exercise programme. Luke Chillingsworth

A new era is hatching at Sacrewell Easter 2014 is the dawn of a new era at Sacrewell Farm near Wansford. On Saturday, April 5th, at 9.30am the new Sacrewell Play Barn will officially open in all its glory. Featuring a three-story Sacrewell themed play frame, Didi Car track and giant slide, the new facilities will boost the fantastic offers already available at the farm. April 5th also marks the first day of the locally renowned Big Bunny Hunt. Explorers will be taken on a bumpy tractor ride up to the woods, where they will hunt for a hidden egg and present it to the Easter Bunny, who will in turn exchange it for a delicious chocolate surprise. Our lambing event coincides with Easter this year, making a visit to Sacrewell even more worthwhile over the Easter holidays. There will be lamb feeding shows every day, where you can learn all about how we raise our orphaned cade lambs and maybe even have a go at bottle feeding one yourself! To round off the holidays we’ll be hosting a Sunflower Sunday on April 27th, where you can come to the farm and plant a seed in our flower bed with your name next to it. Over the summer you can visit your sunflower to see how tall it grows! The Farm is open daily from 9.30am – 5pm.

For more information about events please visit www.sacrewell.org.uk or call 01780 782254

Gardening Special The perfect patio

Spread a little beauty round your garden with baskets and containers

The patio is one of the areas in the garden that stands out and gets used the most, so it’s worth putting in a little time and effort to make it as pretty and productive as possible.

One of the easiest ways to incorporate colour and balance to your home and garden is to invest in hanging baskets and planting containers.

Creating your perfect garden

Whether you live in a small townhouse or a country cottage, anyone can try these simple, highly enjoyable methods of gardening, and it only takes around 20 minutes to plant up a container or basket.

There are many great tips and tricks you can do with your patio to make it stand out as a place full of flowers and become a welcoming place to relax on those lovely summer days.

When the time comes to select your plants, it is worth carefully considering the flowering plants you choose. Select colours that work well together and plants that flower reliably.

Vibrant pots make all the difference to a patio or doorstep, adding colour and interest for the entire summer.

Colour hit

Create impact, and a big splash of colour, by grouping several pots together – this looks far more impressive than a single container dotted here and there. Fill pots with summer bedding plants such as Geramiums, Petunia and Busy Lizzies which also develop and flower quickly.

Lots of plants grow well in containers and hanging baskets. Some great summer plants to include are: lobelia, fuchsias, pansies, petunias, sweetpeas and snapdragon and ivy. Trailing plants are also an excellent addition to any hanging-basket. Hanging-baskets really are very easy to create, and can be fixed to most walls and exterior buildings.

Think vertical Disguise ugly walls and fences with clever plant solutions. Consider a ‘green wall’ approach, which uses year-round herbaceous plants for a continuous display, or cover the space with lots of hanging baskets filled with colourful summer bedding. Either will bring about a transformation.

Pots, troughs, ½ barrels and window boxes can come in a range of shapes and sizes, making them ideal for any smaller space you think needs spruced up. With such a range of containers, you are likely to find one that will fit you needs perfectly.

Sitting comfortably

The sizes of plants should also be considered – you don’t want a tiny plant in a huge pot, or a large plant in a pot too small, this will lead to it being re-potted often.

Something to sit on is the most important part of a patio, so you need to get it just right. Decide whether you want a table and chairs for dining, or comfy sofas or loungers for replacing, then consider the style.

Care of your April garden

Papworth Trust

After recent rain, it’s good to see some dry weather, but, of course, it is the month of April showers! Do not be deceived into thinking that your plants do not need watering. Look out for new seed beds, and dry, windy spots that are vulnerable to evaporation. However, the sun will be shining through and bringing longer days and warmer spells, so be sure to keep your greenhouse ventilated to prevent scorching. Late frosts can still occur so if this is forecast, cover up vulnerable plants. Make sure you keep on top of the many tasks this month, including: • Sowing new lawns or repairing bare patches • Feeding hungry shrubs and roses • Sowing hardy annuals and herb seeds • Protecting fruit blossom from late frosts • Keeping weeds under control • Increasing the water given to houseplants Now is the best time to apply weed and moss killer to lawns. Once this has been applied, you can lightly rake off the debris with a metal grass rake. Mow the lawn as it grows, repairing any humps and bumps by peeling off the top layer and lowering the soil. Apply a thin layer of good top soil or compost to low areas and spread a little seed. This will make mowing easier and eliminate scalping.

Charity Papworth Trust is looking for people in the community to open their gardens in aid of its work supporting disabled people. Heart’s ease and phlox, meadowsweet and lady smocks, lupin or tall hollyhocks, to echo the words of the song. However your garden grows, the Trust would like to hear from you. Papworth Trust Community Fundraiser Andrea Chupacova said: “We are looking for enthusiastic gardeners who are willing to open their gardens this summer and help us to raise vital funds. It’s a great way to celebrate the beauty of English country gardens – whether big or small – and support our work with disabled people and their families at the same time.” If you would like to open your garden on behalf of Papworth Trust any time between May and the end of August 2014, then contact the Papworth Fundraising Team on 01480 357206. The team will be able to help you with marketing, publicity and ideas to raise funds such as raffles and teas.

Tree work will continue throughout spring. Watch out for nesting birds and ensure that work carried out do not interfere with them. Check for any storm damage over the windy months that you may not have noticed and removed dead wood or damaged limbs before new growth adds weight to them.

Big or small, charity Papworth Trust hopes gardeners will be ‘open’ to summer fundraising bid. “How many kinds of sweet flowers grow in an English country garden?” A line from an old folk song, but also a question people across the region just may find the answer to this summer.

Turfing is ideal at this time of year. Once it has been prepared and laid you can let the showers do the hard work. Turfing can be laid all year but has various disadvantages depending on the time of the year.

Gardening Special “Gardening is a way of showing that you believe in tomorrow”

Your April Garden

Please do not forget to water and feed the birds.

Let us all hope for a sunny April which will allow us to sow new lawns and repair established ones. For a good finished lawn, preparation is everything. As we have had so much rain lawns will require feeding with high nitrogen fertiliser that will replace the nutrient that has been lost. Prune forsythia and winter jasmine soon after flowering, deadhead daffodils, tulips and pansies. In the vegetable garden, continue to plant out seed potatoes and when buying these, ensure that you are buying “certified seed” do not just go and buy the cheapest. Keep an eye on the weather forecast for frost and cover with fleece if a frost is imminent. Should you be unlucky and your potatoes do get frosted you can try and save them by spraying the tops with water before the sun gets on them. I have known this to work. In the greenhouse you can keep frost out, sow tomatoes ensuring that they have plenty of light. Plant up new shrubs, conifers, perennials and alpines and watch out for aphids (greenfly and blackfly) as we have not had a lot of cold weather to inhibit them.

32

We get asked a great deal this time of year about compost - which is the best - peat based or peat free? My answer to this is that I have tried most peat free compost on the market and to date has found that most are inferior to peat based compost. Many gardeners like me hate all the things that you find in the peat free compost such as lumps of wood, straw bits etc. I also find the consistency in both quality and performance quite poor whilst a good peat based compost such as that produced by Clover of Ireland takes some beating and helps the gardener to be a success, so always look out for the best quality brands and remember you only get what you pay for! The nutrient level in compost such as multipurpose lasts about three to five weeks dependent upon the amount of water or rain as this leaches the nutrients out and therefore requires supplementary feeding. I would like to point out that this is my own personal opinion based on my personal experience but welcomes the day when good peat free compost is available. Having visited the peat bogs over the years, I have always found that once the peat is harvested, the bogs are restored to the benefit of a wider variety of birds and wildlife.

by by Jim Jim Green, Green, Farcet Farcet Nurseries Nurseries

One other question that is often asked is why do my bedding plants take a long time to grow once planted? The answer to this question is more often due to the large growers who supply the retail outlets, spraying the plants with a growth regulator which, although does benefit the plant in some ways, can result in the plant standing still for a long period of time particularly if sprayed too much. Until the growth regulator has worn off the plants will stand still. The reason for spraying the plants is to hold the plant back in order to give the retailer longer to sell the plant, reducing the work in keeping them looking good. It is claimed that it does make the plant branch out. Personally, I do not like the use of growth regulators and prefer to go along with the growers that do not use these growth regulators but a method called “Dif” which is basically controlling the growth naturally without causing any form of check. This is done by the “dif” method (difference) in temperatures. When buying plants, particularly bedding and basket plants always ask your supplier if controlled release fertilisers have been used in the compost as this will ensure a good start and finish to your plants. And one for the children.... Q. Why do potatoes make good detectives? A. Because they keep their eyes peeled!”

Health & Beauty Considering natural gel nails?

LCN, meaning ‘Light Concept Nails’ are safer, more natural in appearance and are considerably more durable than typical gel nails. They are non-porous so they protect the natural nail underneath and do not discolour over time.

Not everyone wants nail extensions but they still need a protective gel coating to give their weak nails a little extra strength and to look great.

Many ladies who use them regard them as the best on the cosmetic nail market and they are regarded so highly because there are no harsh chemicals or unpleasant odours. They can only be applied by experienced and approved technicians - you are always guaranteed a safe and perfect finish with Michelle. And or course, there is an extensive range of colours to choose from - clear for a perfect natural look, french manicure for a classic look and any other colour under the rainbow, lasting up to 4 weeks.

LCN gel nails from Michelle at Just Nails are the simple, healthy way to bring out the best in natural nails. They are available in approved salons only and Michelle has many years experience in the nail industry.

‘Victory for Panthers at PGL’

One of Hampton Netball Clubs junior teams ‘Panthers’ took part in their first netball tour at a PGL Activity Centre in Shropshire in March. This was a first for the girls, and as well as competing against experienced U16’s teams from around the UK, they had the opportunity to take part in outdoor adventure activities too. It was an action packed weekend that started with abseiling and high ropes as a warm up before the netball competition got under way in the afternoon. With their new kit receiving some envious glances, Panthers won three of the five games scheduled that afternoon in style. Sunday continued with some rifle shooting before playing their final game of preliminaries which they won comfortably 16-3. While goal difference and average goals were taken into consideration it was a nervous wait to see if they had got through to the final…they had, but only just by 0.3 of a goal!

With a surprise visit from Hertfordshire Mavericks and England Squad member ‘Sasha Corbin’, the girls prepared for the final against Dudley Netball Club who they had lost to on the Saturday. Panthers came out fighting, they battled for every ball and rebound securing an early lead. Dudley were not able to get back on level terms and Panthers were able to keep the pressure on winning 7-5! Tracey Hammond, Coach for the weekend said “This is the best netball I’ve seen Panthers play, they are a true asset to Hampton Ladies Netball Club and we are all very proud of their achievement”.

‘Thank you from Hampton Ladies Netball Club’ The Club would like to thank Peterborough City Council and Cartridge World Peterborough for funding Panthers new dresses and hoodys in readiness for their netball tour, they looked and felt great. To help towards the cost of the mini bus to transport Panthers to Shropshire, the girls have taken part in various fund raising activities including a raffle. A big thank you to Cartridge World Peterborough, Maharanis, Calmababy, Tescos, Norwich & Peterborough and Yates Bar for donating some super prizes.

Hampton Netball Club achieve Bronze Accreditation Hampton Netball Club are pleased to announce that this month we achieved our Bronze accreditation for the Club Action Planning Scheme (CAPS) Programme which is the only national cross sports quality accreditation scheme for clubs with junior sections. with a fantastic offer!

Led by their striker, Briony Fox the Hampton Girls overwhelmed their local rivals with a display of pass and move football. Fox with 6 goals became the first Hampton U15 Girls player to score a double hat trick in a single match.

Hampton U 15 Girls produced a master class performance to beat Netherton United U15 Girls, 8-1. Hampton started at a furious pace with Amy Gore constantly getting past the Netherton left back. Supported by Ell Boothman and Emma Stevenson the Hampton Girls were quickly 1-0 up with Fox scoring the first of her 6 goals. A second by Fox and Stevenson quickly followed. At half time game was finely poised at 3-1 . The second half saw no easing of the pressure with Hampton winger, Amy Gore making it 4-1.

Hampton Calendar

April is here! I’ve done well so far Easter eggs have been in my wardrobe for weeks & I’ve not touched them! This may be the first time in years that I’ve not had to rush out just to buy replacements! Unfortunately this isn’t down to a new healthy eating regime, but rather a niggly tooth that is causing me pain. The thought of chocolate anywhere near it (especially peanut m&ms) is unattractive. What’s silly is, I know the problem & I know the solution so why haven’t I deal with it? Because the tooth needs extracting & that will mean a gap. You could quite possibly say pride has been causing me pain. In my head if I lost the tooth then people will look at me as though I belong on Jeremy Kyle. I’ll have to keep my mouth closed far more than I do, I’ll have to learn how to stop being a talker & be a mouth closed smiler. And as I’m typing this I feel it sounds stupid because actually, who cares?! Haven’t we all got issues & faults & insecurities? The pain needs to go -as does the tooth & the idea that anyone that matters will even see me any differently. I loved the recent flurry of ‘without makeup selfies’ on Facebook to raise cancer awareness. I loved it for the donations to cancer research it generated, but also because it just gave me back a little perspective. I moan about spots & the grey hair that is determined it wants a place on my head- actually, let’s not go down the route of things I could complain about myself! But I have my health. I may have a love/hate relationship with my locks but I haven’t lost my hair through gruelling sessions of chemo. I may have a few (ahem) wobbly bits but I haven’t shed masses of weight & loss of appetite caused by a killer disease. Most importantly, I have some very special people to love & love me regardless of my appearance - and I’m not currently going through the excruciating pain of knowing my or anyone close to me, days are numbered. I’ve been there before & I’d have every single tooth from my mouth removed than go through that again. Perspective gained, pride swallowed, dentist tomorrow... Happy Easter all! Yours, Gappy ;) x
