yourmusic Peterborough Young Singers Peterborough Young Singers are committed to providing young people the opportunity to sing together to the highest standards. Our Junior Choir, for children aged between 7 and 12 years, and our Senior Choir, young adults between the ages of 13 and 21 perform as distinct groups with appropriate repertoire; but do also sing as one voice. The choirs meet on Saturday mornings, during term time, at CSK Church, Hampton. In addition, as well

as singing opportunities, we are keen to promote a fun and social atmosphere and regularly organise events like bowling, BBQs for all our members. Our youth choir is an independent organisation that has been together since the early 1990s and is run by a group of dedicated parents who are focused on the young people's enjoyment. We don’t audition - just come and join the fun!

The challenges when parents separate and one wants to relocate with their child The emotional strain of a divorce or separation, particularly when children are involved, can be devastating. When parents choose to split up, more often than not they will continue to live and work in the same geographical area. However, it is becoming more and more common that one parent wishes, or is required to relocate, often thousands of miles away. Ultimately the child’s welfare is paramount. That is the only principle is relocation cases. A holistic, evaluative approach must be taken, looking at each parents’ proposals side by side, balancing the pros and cons in terms of the child’s welfare and listening to what the child has to say, if he or she is old enough to give their view. The moving parent must understand the importance of facilitating the child’s relationship with the parent who is left behind, whether through weekly Skype or Facetime calls or extended holidays outside of term time. Relocation cases require expert legal guidance, a strategic approach and an understanding of the emotional impact that the move will have upon every member of the family not only in the short term but for generations ahead.

Have you recovered from eating all that chocolate at Easter yet? There are so many Easter eggs that you can buy these days. Different shapes and brands, some in a mug, some with sweets inside. When you want to show someone how much you care and love them it is tempting to find the biggest egg on the shelf isn’t it? There are definitely some very big eggs to be found! The reality is though, you can never buy an egg big enough to try and communicate just how much you love someone. Jesus wanted to show how much he loved us and wanted a relationship with us. Jesus is alive and loves to spend time with us. One of the ways we communicate with Jesus is through prayer. We talk to Him and he hears us. But it wasn’t always possible to have this close relationship. Jesus made

the ultimate sacrifice by dying on the cross to show how much he loved us. God raised him back to life three days later and He lives today. We can have a close relationship with Jesus at the centre of our lives because of this sacrifice. This is what we celebrate at Easter, the death and resurrection of Jesus. The bible says it so well in John chapter 3 verse 16: For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. Last month, we welcomed Helen Perkins, a renowned local reflexologist, who spoke to us about the origins, uses and benefits of reflexology and showed us a simple reflexology hand massage. We booked Helen because our members had voted for a talk on reflexology when we were deciding upon our 2016 programme. In fact, the subject and content of all our meetings has been decided upon by our members. HM Queen Elizabeth II's 90th Birthday HM Queen Elizabeth II will be celebrating her 90th Birthday this year, with events being held at Windsor Castle and in London during May and June.

Such a momentous occasion will be marked by events up and down the country and Hampton will of course be joining in the fun! 12

Both will be holding celebrations starting with the Hampton Seniors Queen's 90th Birthday Tea Party on Saturday 11th June. The event will be held at Hampton Vale Community Centre, there will be music and entertainment as well as an afternoon tea style buffet with sandwiches, scones and cake and a tombola and raﬄe. Tickets for the event are just £3.00 each with all proceeds going towards a specialised wheelchair fund for Hampton Vale teenager, Summer! On Sunday 12th June, Hampton Vale Community Centre will be hosting the Queen's 90th Birthday Family Fun Afternoon; A free event with bouncy castle and crafts for the children, afternoon tea style buffet and lots more fun for all the family! Last month, the Hampton in Action group held a very successful "Clean for The Queen" litter pick, with over 30 local residents helping clean up Hampton's open spaces for us all to enjoy, details of that event and future litter picks can be found on their Facebook page, if you would like to get involved.

hat a delightful surprise I had the other day. Looking out of the kitchen window there sitting on the garden fence was a sparrowhawk! Although an unusual sight for me it seems that the sparrowhawk is the most commonly reported bird of prey in gardens. I have never seen one, even though they are apparently widespread across the UK and found almost everywhere. The barred chest, a back flecked with white and its orange cheeks gave it away as a sparrowhawk and was really only slightly larger than a wood pigeon. Sparrowhawks are attracted to gardens because they find a plentiful supply of small birds there – hence the origin of the name. To some, I suppose, they may not be a welcome visitor therefore. This type of food supply made them vulnerable in the 1950s to poisoning and thus their numbers declined. During this period seeds were coated in pesticides. When these seeds were eaten by small birds the pesticides were transferred

into the food chain. This affected sparrowhawks through being poisoned themselves, by eating the small birds, and their shells becoming too thin to support the chicks within. Most sparrowhawks live for about four years, with only 34% of young birds surviving to be one year old. There are interesting differences between males and females: a female sparrowhawk can survive for seven days without eating but a male can only survive for four days. A female can catch birds the size of woodpigeons but males, being smaller in size, can only manage smaller birds such as tits and sparrows. Next month, May, sparrowhawks will be nesting. They lay about 4 or 5 eggs which hatch after 35 days. After about 28 days the young will begin to leave the nest and attempt flight. Soon they reach their parents’ ability for spectacular flight. They reach high speeds and are adept at swooping down on their prey, which consists of about two small birds a day, or occasionally mice, voles and young rabbits.

EDUCATION IN THE HAMPTONS Education has never been more important to a child’s chances of success in life. Hampton’s excellent school provision is a key reason why many families choose to live here - and it’s set to get even better

onstruction work began in January on the new Hampton Gardens secondary school, which will ultimately cater for 1,500 11-19 year-olds from the Hamptons and Yaxley. Hampton Gardens breaks new ground as the first Hamptons school not designed and built by O&H Hampton. Instead, it’s a joint project between Peterborough City Council and Cambridgeshire County Council, and is being built by Carillion, a construction firm which has worked on a number local schools including the City of Peterborough Academy. The school will serve the new villages planned for Hampton East and provide additional places for children in the existing Hamptons area and in Yaxley. Following the precedent set by O&H Hampton when they created Hampton College, the first Hamptons secondary school, the new school is planned to have outstanding facilities designed with the community in mind. O& H Hampton intentionally set the bar high for school design in the Hamptons. The highquality facilities at Hampton College, which O&H Hampton completed in 2005, including a 200-seater amphitheatre and central square graced by a David Nash artwork, were intended as community assets.

Community to benefit from facilities The new school, covering almost 10 hectares of land off the Clayburn Road junction, east of the A15, will have an all-weather sports pitch and multi-games area, amphitheatre, Learning Resource Centre, dance and drama studios and a range of well-equipped science laboratories including a specialist 'show lab'. The building has been designed to provide good access to main facilities outside school hours and, says the new school website, “there will be plenty of opportunity for the community to benefit from the excellent facilities”. Aiming high Hampton Gardens also plans to match the high educational and behavioural standards reached by Hampton College, which has been rated as Good or Outstanding in its previous three OFSTED inspections. Like Hampton College, it will be run by Hampton Academies Trust, and be a free school, independent of local authority control. School numbers will be built up in stages. The first intake, in September 2017, will be 240 Year 7 children (children who are currently in Year 5), and the school will grow by one year group each succeeding year until it reaches full capacity.

New primary schools The Hamptons already have three excellent primary schools: Hampton Hargate, Hampton Vale and Hampton College Primary, the first two of which were built by O&H Hampton. So far O&H has provided over 23 hectares of prepared land for the Hampton school sites, with more to come. The planned development of four new villages in Hampton will include building two new primaries, in Hampton Gardens and in Hampton Water. O&H Hampton general manager Roger Tallowin says these schools will be located at the heart of the new residential neighbourhoods: “Schools are a vital part of our communities. It has always been our vision for them to play a central role in establishing a focus for social and community activities in the Hamptons.”

The benefits of laughter I love to laugh. I was a giggly child. Maybe a little more reserved during my teenage years but I still retained my sense of humour. Young children laugh often and unreservedly. As we mature we become more self-conscious and laugh less often. There has been extensive medical research into the therapeutic benefits of laughter. It releases endorphins and acts as a natural balance to the stresses and strains of life. Dr Madan Kataria a medical doctor in Mumbai India took laughter out of academic study and into practical application when he began Laughter yoga. It is based on the premise that the body does not know the difference between real and fake laughter, and a person will still receive all the physiological and psychological benefits. Laughter yoga is a mix of playful laughter exercises and yogic style deep breathing. It is a fabulous fun way to manage stress, strengthen the immune system and create positive and uplifting energy. I have recently qualified as a laughter yoga leader. So every morning while my family slumber in their beds I have been doing my laugh alone exercises. So how do I feel? I feel great! I have gone up a few notches on the jolly scale. Feel energised and calm and I must say I love it! So I am thinking of starting a laughter club in Hampton if anyone is interested then do drop me a line. Keep smiling and laughing whenever you can it is good for you!

February gave a mixed run of fortunes for the Hempsted United boys, a 1-1 draw with Leverington, was closely followed up with a 3-1 defeat to struggling bottom side Malborne. It was a defeat that was soon forgotten with a 2-1 victory away at Peterborough Northern Star and that’s where we are in terms of results at the time of going to press. Off the field, as with many of their monthly excursions, the boys enjoyed an all-you-can-eat meal and team bonding exercise! It’s worth nothing, if you have a child in school year 7 who would like to come and be a part of the clubs activities ...

Training is at the HCSA Sports Centre every Tuesday night 5.30–7pm. Future plans include: A new adult side for next season after a merger with another city club was agreed, there is also a number of other youth teams joining the clubs ranks as well but it is not fair to publish details of this just yet mid-season.

The Easter Break is just around the corner, such a short half term but so much going on: The Year 9 Boys Football team are back to their winning ways with an 8 - 1 win over Sir Harry Smith. Last week saw the results of the Youth Parliament Make Your mark elections. A big congratulations to Erin Langham who did us so very proud. The school also received a Silver Youth Voice Award for our Support and Commitment to Youth Voice in Peterborough! Cheerleading Taster Sessions is one to watch! This half term we have been able to offer students the opportunity to take part in a cheerleading taster morning. Street Dance: We currently have a specialist street dance coach in school. The girls have had fun learning a variety of new skills. The Key Stage 4 & 5 Sports Council representatives all attended a sports leadership course held at Jack Hunt School. The course aimed to strengthen relationships between young people and their local communities. The Arts Faculty launched a new format for its School Production last week. A Night at the Movies was an absolutely outstanding performance. The cast were an absolute credit to HC, they worked like stage professionals and kept bringing more energy and focus throughout the rehearsals that led to an amazing performance night. It was fast paced, comical and showcased the variety of different talents that the pupils of HC have to offer. It really was a breath taking show and we thank everyone involved.

Spring is in the air at Hampton Hargate – a perfect time for our Year 4 residential trip to Stibbington which took place at the beginning of March. The children had a fantastic few days and engaged in lots of fantastic activities including a pirate treasure hunt, experiencing an Anderson Shelter and toasting bread over a fire as part of a Viking day! We also celebrated World Book Day at the beginning of March with a bedtime stories evening when over 400 children came back into school at 6.00pm in their pyjamas and enjoyed cookies and milk whilst listening to a bedtime story. Reception and Year 1 children also had a special visit from Princess Elsa and Anna which was really exciting! In other news, we have been learning about Fair Trade. We held a Fair Trade stall and the children had an opportunity to spend their pocket money on a small gift of their choice. There were lots to choose from including chocolate and jelly beans and the stall was a great success as we took over £1000! Year’s 1 and 2 have been stargazing in the Star Dome. The children saw a recreated dark night sky and learnt about why we have night and day and star patterns. Reception enjoyed their visit to Hamerton Zoo despite the cold weather and they saw tigers, cheetahs and monkeys! And finally our Year 5 finished the term in style with their fabulous production of ‘Pirates versus Mermaids’. Who knew we had so many stars!

Hampton Gardens Secondary School Opening September 2017 Hampton Gardens School will open to Year 7 students in September 2017. The school is currently under construction and is located in between Yaxley and Hampton on a plot to the east of the A15.

OUTSTANDING FACILITIES The state of the art school buildings and grounds include the following design features: • A full size, floodlit, 3G, all-weather pitch, suitable for a range of sports. • An auditorium for performances and assemblies, with retractable seating. • A stunning, double height library/learning resource centre at the heart of the school. • An exceptionally well-equipped science department, including show laboratories for regional events. • An outside amphitheatre and attractively landscaped grounds for sport and for students to enjoy at break and lunchtimes.

Who is the school for? The school is being built for Yaxley residents and for children residing in the new housing being built on the Hampton East development. The school becomes the official catchment school for Yaxley residents from September 2017. This means the current Year 5 will be the first year group to go to the school. The Trust will go out to consultation on the exact admissions criteria for the school later on in 2016, however, it is expected that Yaxley residents will be given priority in the admissions criteria. In the longer term the catchment will be defined as Yaxley and specific new parts of Hampton. However, in the earlier years there is likely to be an overarching Hampton catchment area.

Free School Hampton Gardens School was successful in its application to become a Free School. This has meant that the Hampton Academies Trust has secured central government funding to build the school and is supported by a team at the Department for Education (DfE) in its pre-opening preparation. The Trust is working with the DfE to ensure that the educational offer at the school will meet the needs of local students and will support them in gaining a range of

qualifications. It is the aspiration of the Trust that Hampton Gardens will be judged as an Outstanding school by Ofsted and, as a Free School, it will have a pre-opening readiness visit from Ofsted prior to September 2017.

Partnerships The school is being built in an innovative partnership between the Hampton Academies Trust, the Free Schools team at the DfE and Peterborough City Council and Cambridgeshire County Council. Both local authorities have been active in driving forward the case to establish the new school, to ensure that the locality has sufficient school places over the next 20 years. The school will also work in close association with Hampton College, the Trust’s existing academy. Hampton College and Hampton Gardens schools will be able to share staff and facilities to enhance the experience of learners at both schools.

Staggered intake The school will have a staggered intake to take account of the growth in new housing in the local area and will gradually grow to be able to accommodate 1500 learners by the mid 2020s. In 2017 the school will admit up to 180 Year 7 students, 210 Year 7 students in 2018 and reaching its year group capacity of 240 for Year 7 in 2019.

Sixth form There will be a joint sixth form offer across Hampton Gardens and Hampton College, allowing learners from both schools to choose from a wider range of high quality post 16 courses. The Trust has been able to ensure that facilities at the new school do not just replicate those of Hampton College, but also provide new learning facilities for young people in the area. For example, Hampton Gardens school will have a room equipped to offer catering courses. A shared sixth form will mean that the range of A level subjects on offer can be broadened, in addition to providing an enhanced vocational offer across the schools. Hampton Gardens will have a purpose built sixth form study area, located on the top floor, providing stunning views across the school field and across to Hampton.

Who are the people behind the Hampton Academies Trust? Hampton College became an academy on 1 September 2014. As a successful school it was approved by the Department of Education to form its own multi-academy trust. Hampton Academies Trust is effectively the same team who lead and govern Hampton College.

Why is the trust building a new school? Hampton College has now reached its capacity intake of 210 students per year group. Local demography shows that primary aged children living on the existing Hampton development will shortly exceed this number. The new school is being built to accommodate children from the village of Yaxley, children from the new housing to be built on the east of the A15 and to provide additional school places to those living on the existing Hampton development.

What is the vision for the new school? The vision is to create a school that shares a number of common features with Hampton College but which will also have its own distinct identity. Three key priorities for the school are that it should be: • A high performing school with strong results. • An inclusive school which meets the needs of all learners in the locality. • A school which supports children and young people from all backgrounds to succeed.

Will Hampton College and Hampton Gardens work together? Yes. The Trust believes there is a unique advantage in running two schools in close proximity as they will be able to share staffing and facilities. • Hampton College and Hampton Gardens will have a joint sixth form, enabling the Trust to offer an even broader range of subjects and courses. • The Trust intends to offer some GCSE and/or vocational courses across the two schools for Year 10/Year 11 students. • Together the two schools can offer an even wider range of clubs, educational visits and extra-curricular activities.

Will the new school open on time?

he branch, at The Serpentine Shopping Centre, is one of 20 that has been recognised by the Society for its commitment to making a positive impact on its local community and responding to the issues that are important to its customers in Hampton. Society Matters is the name of the corporate responsibility programme of Yorkshire Building Society, of which N&P is part of. It aims to make a genuine difference through charity fundraising, volunteering and community activities. In 2015 colleagues and customers held two collections

for Sue Ryder Thorpe Hall Hospice. In September they collected gifts and toys for children and then in October they collected toiletry sets and other gifts for adults. The Society offers every colleague up to 31 hours’ paid leave to help out at a charity or good cause of their choice through its corporate volunteering programme. Colleagues at N&P Hampton also volunteered at Thorpe Hall Hospice helping to maintain the grounds for patients and their families. The branch also in 2015 raised £2,990 for the Society’s Hour of

Need campaign which funds Marie Curie nursing care for people with a terminal illness. Every £20 funds one hour of care and customers and colleagues have raised the equivalent of almost 150 hours of Marie Curie nursing care. Debbie Perkins, manager of the Hampton branch of N&P Building Society, said: “As an organisation, we believe that together with our members we can make a real difference in our local communities.

I’m honoured that we have been recognised with a Society Matters Award for the work we have done in 2015 in support of Hampton, and we will be continuing this work in 2016. April’s spring temperature and sunshine is ideal for grass seed germination – for bare patches lightly rake the area to create a seed bed, scatter some seed and cover with a very thin layer of soil. Spring Vegetable Recipes

Perfect for every occasion

Spring is on its way, so let’s make the most of it by enjoying the best vegetables the season has to offer!

Seasonal vegetables:

Beetroot, carrots, cauliflower, kale, leeks, new potatoes, radishes, rhubarb, rocket, spinach, spring onions, watercress.

Quick and Easy Mushroom & Spinach Lasagne Serves 4-6 Ingredients: • • • • • • •

400-500g of fresh spinach large punnet of mushrooms garlic (crushed) cheese sauce lasagne verdi sheets Grated cheese Oil for cooking

Steps: 1. Blanch the spinach in one pan and gently fry the mushrooms and garlic in another with a little oil. Once cooked, stir the two together and add in salt and pepper to season. 2. Make up a packet cheese sauce as directed. 3. Stir half of the cheese sauce into the spinach and mushroom mixture. 4. Pour some mixture into a lasagne dish, then layer with lasagne sheets. 5. Add another layer of sauce mixture, then more lasagne sheets. 6. When finished, pour on leftover cheese sauce mixture and top with grated cheese. 7. Cook in the oven (180 C/Gas 4 for 45-50 mins) until pasta is cooked then sprinkle with cheddar cheese. 8. Serve with a fresh salad and crusty bread.

Carrot Cake Cupcakes Serves: 12 Ingredients: • 8 eggs, separated • 2 teaspoon ground cinnamon • 300g caster sugar • 600g carrots, • 2 lemons, zested and juiced peeled and grated • 120g plain flour • 20g butter, for greasing • 1 teaspoon salt • Cream cheese icing • 4 teaspoons baking powder • 500g cream cheese • 400g ground almonds • icing sugar to taste (approx • 100g chopped pecans 500g - 700g) Steps: 1. Preheat the oven to 180 C / Gas 4. Line a muﬃn tin with paper cases. 2. Whisk together the egg yolks and sugar until the mixture is pale. Add the zest and then the lemon juice, flour, salt, baking powder, almonds, pecans, cinnamon and carrots. 3. Beat the egg whites with an electric mixer to stiff peaks. Fold into the above mixture. 4. Spoon the cupcake mixture into prepared cases. Bake in the preheated oven for 15 minutes. 5. To make the icing, beat the cream cheese with an electric mixer or a fork. Add icing sugar your desired taste and consistency is achieved. 6. Once the cupcakes are fully cool, ice with the cream cheese icing. I prefer these cupcakes cold after 24 hours in the fridge, so if desired wait to ice them after chilling for a day or even just overnight.
