COMMUNITY NEWS
News from Hampton Health Meningitis vaccine for students Cases of meningitis and septicaemia (blood poisoning) caused by Men W bacteria are rising, due to a particularly deadly strain. From August 2015, all 17- and 18-year-olds in school year 13 and firsttime university students up to the age of 25 will be offered the Men ACWY vaccine as part of the NHS vaccination program. The Men ACWY vaccine protects against four different causes of meningitis and septicaemia – meningococcal (Men) A, C, W and Y diseases. Men ACWY vaccine is given by a single injection into the upper arm.
Why do teenagers and students need Men W vaccination?
W
ith early diagnosis and antibiotic treatment, most people with meningococcal disease make a full recovery. But it’s fatal in about 1 in 10 cases and can lead to long-term health problems, such as amputation, deafness, epilepsy and learning difficulties. Older teenagers and university students are at high risk of infection because they tend to live in close contact in shared accommodation, such as university halls of residence. We will be sending letters inviting teenagers in school year 13 to have the Men ACWY vaccine
at the practice so please look out for the letters and contact the practice to book an appointment. There will also be a catch-up vaccination programme for current school year 10 students through schools from January 2016 and the Men ACWY vaccine will also be added to the routine adolescent schools programme (school year 9 or 10) from autumn 2015, alongside the 3-in-1 teenage booster, and as a direct replacement for the Men C Vaccination.
What is Meningitis? Meningitis is inflammation of the protective layers that surround the brain and spinal cord. These layers are called the meninges. Men ACWY vaccine is given by a single injection into the upper arm. Meningitis can be divided into two main types; viral and bacterial meningitis. Viral meningitis is reasonably common, but rarely fatal. Bacterial forms are comparatively rare, but extremely dangerous and can be fatal.
For more information about meningitis and the Men ACWY vaccination please visit the NHS Choices website at www.nhs.uk

The summer holidays are here and they have come round so fast! I’ve got a little feeling that us parents out there are going to be hearing ‘I’m bored’. Well this month I have a few ideas for you and your little ones.

R
ainy days can be the hardest but we can have a lot of fun with a bit of imagination. Why not fill the crafts draw with paint, glitter and card and make a handprint daffodil, or use your hand prints and turn them into fish? Make rabbits with footprint ears. Maybe you could treat the older ones to a cinema trip or a cozy day under a blanket watching a film whilst eating freshly baked fairy cakes. If it’s not too wet, get your wellies on and splash in the puddles! When the rain dries up, there’s so much we can do. Pack a picnic and pop to see the ducks, just make sure you take extra bread, ducks can be greedy! We could dig the bikes out of the garage and follow the circle route to Nene Park. There we can follow a nature trail, or ride the train; if the sun comes out we can even have a BBQ there and a boat ride. For the younger ones we can get our sun hats on and play in the park, maybe cool down with an ice cream. What about brightening up your own garden with a trip to Dobbies, we can get the little ones to help dig the holes, get nice and messy! During our holidays we are going to visit Railworld for the first time, which is very exiting. For the babies why not meet up with a friend and take them to Kiddicare? There you can have some lunch and the babies can meet new friends in the soft play area. For the bigger ones, if you can travel a little further why not visit Activity World or Big Sky Adventure Play. We have been to Activity World ourselves and it’s so much fun, they even have a toddler area full of toys and we can’t forget the giant Lego! I love the summer holidays and I can’t wait to do some exploring of my own. Whatever you do this summer stay safe and have fun because it will fly by!

Each month we are going to introduce you to one of your Parish Council members, so you can find out a bit more about them and what they do . . .
M
y name is Marion Sharp and I am the newly elected Chairwoman of Hampton Parish Council. I have lived in Hampton Hargate since August 1999 and was co-opted on to the Parish Council in March 2011 following my ‘retirement’ from teaching in 2010. Having taught for 39 years both in state schools and the Independent Peterborough High School I have an extensive knowledge of the education process and policies, etc. and have campaigned for more school places to be made available in Hampton. I teach two days per week in a Peterborough school (having been headhunted) and on my days off enjoy walking my two dogs around the lakes in Hampton, and before anyone asks, yes, I use ‘poo bags’ to bag it and bin it. Whilst walking our two dogs around Hampton (a good way to meet other dog- owner residents), I enjoy admiring the many wellkept front gardens in the area, as well as taking note of the amount of litter needlessly dropped ! We should feel proud to be living in Hampton. How many UK residents can boast of wide open spaces, football pitches, lakes, excellent shops and short commute into a city centre? We do continue to seek for improvements to the centre of Hampton Vale and meet again with the City Council to implement new measures. The Parish Council is a hardworking and committed non-political group of elected or co-opted volunteers, whose aim is to make Hampton a model for other city councils to follow. I am pleased to inform you that we intend to launch exciting new initiatives to benefit all residents. The skate park is finally underway and this is due to the Parish Council’s relentless and tireless campaign for it! If you have a query or problem, then please feel free to attend the 15 minute public forum of Parish Council Meetings (held in the Tesco meeting room at Serpentine Green on the first Thursday of every month at 7pm). Alternatively, use the Parish Council website for information or parish noticeboards. The VE 70 Events recently held, brought many residents together and although we wouldn’t wish for wars of past times, we would certainly welcome the strong community spirit and camaraderie of old! Please stop and say ‘Hello’! Best wishes, Marion.

CONSUMER ADVICE
Avoiding holiday scams
by Eileen Le Voi
New figures have revealed that British holidaymakers lost £2.2m in 2014 through a series of internet-based scams and deceptions.
T
he National Fraud Intelligence Bureau revealed more than 1,500 cases of holiday booking fraud were reported in 2014. The most common types of fraud related to fake air tickets, bogus online adverts, hacked accounts and dodgy websites, with those aged 30-49 most commonly targeted. If you’re looking for a holiday deal, there are easy steps you can take to help safeguard yourself and your holiday. 1. Research your company and accommodation Do thorough online searches to ensure the company’s credibility. Online forums ask for other customers’ experiences. Visit long standing review sites such as Trip Advisor and look at overall customer feedback. 2. Is the company ATOL and/or ABTA registered? By law, every UK travel company that sells air holidays and flights is required to hold an ATOL, which stands for Air Travel Organiser’s Licence. ATOL offers consumers financial protection in the event of a travel company failure or if something goes wrong and you’re stranded abroad. ABTA, the UK’s largest travel body, provides a code of conduct for their members to abide by. Customers travelling with ABTA-registered companies can be reassured they have a greater level of protection should things go wrong. 3. Pay with a credit or debit card The majority of people defrauded in 2014 paid with a bank transfer or cash – with no means of redress available. Only a small proportion paid by credit or debit card, where assistance can be sought.

4. Watch out for copycat websites Copycat websites can be incredibly similar to legitimate sites and use advertisements to appear high on Google searches. Customers are asked to fill in forms, charging an ‘administration’ fee, even though there’s no administration needed and you can usually go through the process yourself for free. 5. EHIC Cards and Country Visas Travellers looking for a European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) are a popular target for copycat sites. EHIC cards are free from the NHS. Park’s creator opens improved wildlife garden Thirty seven years after Ferry Meadows Country Park opened to the public, its key creator, Wyndham Thomas CBE, returned in July to formally open its improved Wildlife Garden.
T
he garden, which forms part of the Visitor Centre, is a ‘park in miniature’. Offering shelter from the winds that whistle across the lake and meadows but representing the variety of habitats in the wider Nene Park, it contains a small pond, meadow areas and trees. Images taken by park visitors Matthew Farrugia and David Mills and Ranger Ashley Wheal have also been displayed. There is a panel created by chainsaw carver Dick Tilley at the Woodlands Day event in the Park showing some of the wildlife you could see in the garden and a giant beetle carved into a log created by the same sculptor. Gardener Gareth Lorman, who formerly worked in Monty Don’s garden, said: “It has been an absolute pleasure to work alongside the volunteers and rangers to carry out all the improvements to the garden. Their dedication has transformed this space with log piles, new decking to the pond, bamboo chimes, butterfly borders and stepping stones amongst the flowers.”
Come rain or shine, volunteers work alongside the park rangers every Wednesday. With some of them being keen gardeners at home, they have been able to apply muscle power and enthusiasm to achieve the garden improvements. Volunteer Graham May says “We really hope that people of all ages will visit the garden, enjoy its flowers, plants and insects and that they will be inspired to do more in their own gardens. Please do pop into the Visitor Centre on your next visit to the park to collect a free leaflet giving you top ten tips to follow in your own garden to encourage and enjoy more wildlife.” Gardens are perfect habitats for wildlife and the number we have nationally means we can do something important for nature quite literally on our doorstep. People are invited to come to the Wildlife Garden and revisit their childhood by having a go on the bamboo chimes and following the stepping stones through the flowers!

The Wildlife of Hampton
On many of the nature boards around Hampton the Pipistrelle Bat is featured. Pipistrelles are tiny bats that are only 3.5 to 4.5cm in length (only the size from the nail to the first joint of an adult thumb!) and are the UK’s most common bat species.
T
hey emerge at dusk to feed on small flying insects, such as mosquitoes, small moths, lacewings and mayflies for a couple of hours before returning to their roosts. A single pipistrelle can eat 3,000 mosquitoes in one night. Pipistrelles are agile, fast fliers, flying 5-10m above ground level and low over water. August is a good month to see Pipistrelles, although they are around from April to September. The young bats are born in June or July and in August they are able to fly and leave the roost. They usually only produce one youngster. In the winter, from November to late March, they hibernate in crevices and holes in trees and in buildings. All the UK species of bats are protected under the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981, and it is illegal to harm them or disturb their roost sites. Pipistrelle bats natural predators are owls such as the tawny owl and barn owl. If you find a sick or ailing bat, you should not approach or handle the animal but seek advice from the Bat Conservation Trust. Their website also gives further information about bats in general (www.bats.org.uk). Lakota (Lover of Nature)

t seems summer has arrived in fits and starts and is being typically fickle with who she honours with blue skies, warm winds or crashing storms. Wow! What an amazing mix of weather we have had since last month! Here at Hampton WI we also have an amazing mix of fantastically friendly and funny ladies. Not a meeting goes by without lots of laughter or learning something new and last month was no exception. We had a beginner’s class on Crochet: something about 90 per cent of us had never tried before! Education is one of the founding principles of the Women’s Institute. Every meeting has to have an educational element, be it of a ‘hands on’ nature, or listening to a speaker, and the content of every meeting has been an idea put forward by the members. We have some brilliant meetings lined up for the rest of the year including Wicker Work and Christmas Wreath and Bauble making. We meet just one night a month, every third Thursday, and any woman from 18 to 108 is welcome. Over the last few months our numbers have doubled so there is plenty of company to be found here at Hampton WI. Maybe we will see you soon?

Hampton Skatepark Construction Update The Parish Council has announced that work has ‘at last’ commenced on the much anticipated Hampton Skatepark project. The project build has commenced and the latest photographs show the excavation of the bowl profiles and the site footprints are now becoming apparent. Secure containers have been delivered to the site to keep plant and equipment safe and a materials compound erected. Welders and other workers will be on site from 20 July and as the contractors have raised no problems the build looks likely to be completed on time.

Barcelona Here We Come
Hampton U12s Blues recently took part in a tournament held in the Nou Camp Stadium. Trying to work out who was more excited about the thought of playing at the home of Barcelona FC, the boys or the parents, was a tricky one.
T
emperatures topped over 30 degrees for the group stages but the boys rose to the challenge and won their group. Unfortunately, they lost in the semi- finals, but undeterred they came back out to play again for the third place playoffs and comfortably won that game to finish third overall.
‘Once in a lifetime’ is a phrase often over used, but watching the team run out to the Barcelona match day music from the players tunnel, touching the pitch and then waving at the supporters in the stand is something they won’t forget. Many thanks go to Jamie McLaughlin and Duncan Heal for organising.
Hampton Cricket Club hits great form The last few weeks at Hampton CC have seen a bit of a turnaround for the Saturday 1st XI, including two fantastic nail-biting wins over the league leaders, Stamford Town, and a semi-final victory in the Cootes Cup that has booked the team a place in the final. A fantastic effort from the squad.
T
he Sunday 1st XI is also riding high and have continued their run of winning every game this season. Halfway through the season and promotion is looking very realistic, which would be another great achievement for the club. Junior training is still being incredibly well supported and the club would like to thank all of the kids and parents that come down each week, even when there is a bit of rain in the air. Keep it up!
With the Ashes now in full swing, why not pop down and check out what’s going on? There are home games almost every Saturday and Sunday and it’s great to see people around the ground. Maybe it will even convince you to give it a try. So come on down! Hamptoncc.org Twitter@hampton_c_c www.facebook.com/HamptonCricketClub2004 Facebook “f ” Logo

There is still lots more to come, including the Year 13 Leavers Evening and a range of exciting trips and activities during Enrichment Week, including camp and trips to Paris and Belgium. Glad rags on show for ‘Fairytale’ Prom Big hair, ball gowns and expensive cars everywhere: Thursday, 2 July saw a fairytale ending to secondary school life as the Year 11 Prom took place. Both the boys and girls looked truly stunning as they swapped school uniform for elegant evening attire. The students enjoyed a three course dinner followed by an evening of laughing and dancing with friends and teachers.

SCHOOLS
Hampton Vale Primary
Another successful year full of engaging and learning opportunities at Hampton Vale Primary School ended with a packed programme of summer events for children right across the school.
H
undreds of children, parents and school adults packed into the school hall for the now traditional celebration evening, at which they looked back at the school’s and pupils’ achievements over the year. Progress, achievement and attendance awards were presented to children who had excelled in these areas over the year. The school stage has been a busy place too, with the Year Six children performing their version of the Aladdin musical, firstly to the rest of the school and then to parents and carers. A summer music concert saw more than 70 young dancers, singers and musicians, including a number of soloists, and led by music teacher Helen Yeeles and the school’s team of peripatetic music teachers, perform to an audience of parents and carers. Following their production, the Year Six children became young entrepreneurs as they set up their own businesses and stalls for trading with the rest of the school. They – together with Year Three children – also took part in the Farming and Food Day at the East of England Showground. Children in other year groups have also seen their learning inspired by educational visits. A day at Ferry Meadows for the school’s Foundation Stage children was full of exciting activities including denbuilding, ball and team games and watercolour painting. The children also had the opportunity to discover more about the wildlife at the park. Meanwhile, Year Two children spent the day at Hunstanton, including a visit to the Sea Life Centre there, as part of their Coastal Adventures theme. Hundreds of parents and members of the Hampton community joined children for the school’s successful summer fair, which was organised by the school’s PTFA. In other events, children from the school’s dance club joined pupils from across the city in a dance festival at The Cresset, and best-selling author Steve Cole, whose work includes the Astrosaurs series, spoke to the whole school to encourage them to develop their writing skills. During the summer term, the school has also held four Story Cafes for Reception and Year 1 parents and children. The sessions are used to promote and enhance the enjoyment of reading together from an early age. They provided parents/carers with an opportunity to come into school in a relaxed, informal environment, enjoy some refreshments and work with their children. Facebook “f ” Logo

You can also cycle there from Hampton Vale, just follow the cycle route from the traffic lights at the top of Eagle Way, it is a 10-minute ride! LEGAL ADVICE
Supreme Court hears double divorce challenge Two women who were duped into accepting ‘unfair’ divorce settlements, based on false information provided by their ex-husbands, have asked the Supreme Court to tackle dishonesty in family proceedings and overturn their Court Orders in a three day hearing that took place in early June in London.
B
oth Alison Sharland and Varsha Gohil have asked the Supreme Court to set aside their divorce settlements on the basis that their husbands were dishonest and deliberately misled them and the Court during the original hearing. It is the first time in a generation that the highest court in the land will hear cases on this issue. Family Lawyers hope that Judges will seize the opportunity to show that dishonesty will not be tolerated in the Family Court. There are concerns that if the settlements are not overturned, others in the future could use these cases as a precedent to excuse nondisclosure in their own divorce proceedings. The chance of such a situation happening in your divorce is very much reduced by instructing family law specialist solicitors. We are experienced in spotting the signs of hidden assets and partial financial disclosure to ensure that full transparency is achieved wherever possible.

Kids’ Apps ho C Editor’s ice A funny Rocket Constructor toddlers’ app game for iPad and iPhone
Once upon a time there was a Rocket Constructor. Love is a funny thing – well, at least you could say so in the little love story of the app’s intro: where one evening, a ruffled professor who is watching the stars through his telescope, discovers the love of his life on a distant planet – the kids’ task will be to help the professor construct a rocket, in order for him to visit his true love. Catch the Wally hide and seek iPad and iPhone game for kids (12)
THE REST OF US JUST LIVE HERE Award-winning writer Patrick Ness's bold and irreverent novel powerfully asks what if you weren’t the Chosen One? The one who’s supposed to fight the zombies, or the soul-eating ghosts, or whatever this new thing is, with the blue lights and the death? What if you were like Mikey? Who just wants to graduate and go to prom and maybe finally work up the courage to ask Henna out before someone goes and blows up the high school. Again. Because sometimes there are problems bigger than this week’s end of the world and sometimes you just have to find the extraordinary in your ordinary life. Even if your best friend might just be the God of mountain lions . . .
QUIZ
After releasing the wonderful picture book app Funny Yummy the kids’ app developers Funny Yummy Studio, have now published their first kids’ game for iPad and iPhone called Catch the Wally. The main character of Catch the Wally is the wicked spider Wally, who wants to play a funny hide and seek game with the kids.

O&H Hampton While the Gazette went to press just a bit too early to provide a full report on the Community Update meeting organised by O&H Hampton at the College last month, we did take the opportunity to catch up in advance with Roger Tallowin, O&H general manager, for a quick report on what’s happening over the next few months.
Your guide to
Living in Hampton
O
&H Hampton is the management company developing The Hamptons. It’s responsible for the overall master planning of the 2,500 acres that make up the different neighbourhoods. That also means that it’s in charge of constructing the new roads and infrastructure that underpins this fast-growing community. Here’s a quick summary of what you need to know. New roads and pedestrian routes To date, roadworks in Hampton have been carried out without too much disruption to traffic flow, but the time has now come for a major alteration to the junction between the Western Periphery Road and Nature’s Way. Following discussions with Peterborough City Council, it has become clear that the least disruptive option is to close the road temporarily, rather than stretching out the construction work for many months. So six weeks’ closure will start from mid-August – look out for the road signs which will tell you more. By mid-August, O&H also hope to have completed the Hampton Avenue from near the church to the back of Premier Fitness Gym which, depending on the centre’s owners, may also mean pedestrian access to that facility which is something many people have asked for. Before the end of the year, O&H also hopes to open up a pedestrian route around Haddon Lake. This will link Robin’s Wood to the green wheel west of Haddon Lake through the Nature Reserve, and provide access from the new development where Cala Homes is building 125 homes for sale in the south west corner of Hampton Vale. O&H is currently building the new playing fields for this area. Another junction onto the A15 beside Premier Fitness Gym has been designed and is with the City Council for approval. Hampton building activity increases After more than seven years of recession in the housebuilding industry, it won’t have escaped your notice that new home development is back in action once again. The Hamptons are growing faster and there will be lots of change coming soon. While inevitably that worries some residents, hopefully this also brings with it a stronger, more vibrant community with more facilities and more people to support more leisure facilities. Roger commented that he personally would like to see a cinema in Hampton Centre. O&H Hampton has received planning permission for 350 new homes at the former Orton Brickworks site, so we are expecting a lot of interest in that land from housebuilders over the next couple of years. 130 new homes are being built by Abbey Homes at their site on Hampton Avenue. Of course, the really major development will all be to the east of the A15 – the area now known as Hamptons East. Planning applications will be going in soon for roads and other structural works around Teardrop Lake (including jetties to allow the lake to be used for sailing and water sports), and the new secondary school for children in The Hamptons and Yaxley is already being planned in detail. To stay up-to-date on these and other developments, follow O&H Hampton on Twitter at @ohhampton or keep an eye on news at www.ohhampton.co.uk/latestnews If you have an idea for a subject you’d like to see featured here let us know by email at info@hamptongazette.co.uk

I’m completely thrilled with the results. I’m not really a mini-skirt type of girl but I’ll certainly be showing off my legs this Summer. When I saw that you also treated veins I made my husband have the veins on his nose treated. I must say you have done a great job with him and he looks so much better now without those unsightly veins.
” ”
I had a few prominent veins on my lower legs that really bothered me and with the laser treatment they have now completely disappeared. I have some veins on my thigh to be treated next.
The staff have made me feel comfortable and through that and the treatment I have gained so much confidence.
I am extremely happy with the laser results – made a dramatic improvement to my confidence.

Make your own ice cream! Whilst ice-cream vans may be a seasonal delight, the confection itself is of course readily available from our supermarkets all year round in an astonishing array of different flavour combinations. But it has to be said there’s nothing quite like the home-made variety and all you need is a ice cream maker!
A
firm favourite is real vanilla icecream made with a rich homemade egg custard infused with seeds from a vanilla pod. It’s delicious on its own, but it also makes basic desserts such as fruit crumble or cinnamonbaked bananas into something special. In addition, you can incorporate all sorts of extras to add different flavours and textures: small pieces of good quality caramel or fudge, a marbling of raspberry purée, chopped strawberries, slivers of stem ginger, or even finely-chopped chilli
I I
with chocolate. And for a luscious, grown-up, boozy version, try adding whisky and a little Manuka honey – go steady with any alcohol though, as it slows down the freezing process quite considerably. Experimenting with flavours is great fun, and well worth the effort. However, if you’re in a hurry, the following is a very speedy vanilla ice-cream using good quality readymade custard from the supermarket chiller cabinet: it takes about fifteen minutes from start to finish!*
nstructions Whisk everything together in a large jug, then pour into the ice-cream maker following the manufacturer’s instructions. Process until the volume increases and the desired consistency is achieved. A delicious accompaniment to nectarines baked in a little dessert wine and sprinkled with crushed amaretti biscuits. *Recipe suitable for machines with a 1.4 litre capacity. Reduce quantities for smaller machines.

New coffee shop now open in Hampton Chimes Coffee Shop is now open in Christ the Servant King, the Parish Church of Hampton. Hampton has waited patiently and the wait has paid off. Syvia Kinder explains that tha cafe is currently in its ‘soft opening’ season, gathering customer feedback so the new cafe can provide residents with refreshments how you would like them.
D
uring the hot summer months we are hoping we don’t run out of cold drinks unlike a wedding that Jesus was a guest at in Cana in Galilee. The first miracle that Jesus performed was here, when weddings were typically week long celebrations, and to run out of wine was an embarrassing situation for the hosts, breaking the strong unwritten laws of hospitality. Jesus responded to the need by turning water into the best wine the guests had ever tasted. He often spent time with friends sharing food and drink. Although we won’t be performing any water into wine miracles at Chimes you can definitely share a coffee, tea or soft drink with your friends and family. We have a great selection of cakes. Scones are made in house and are always fresh out of the oven. Other food is being added to the menu during the coming weeks, so like our Facebook page for updates and pictures. You’ll also be able to get details of our Fun Day on Saturday,12 September when we have the official opening. Chimes is located at CSK church on Silverhill behind Serpentine Green. Opening Tuesday to Saturday, 9am to 4pm. If you have visited us already you’ll know that we’re not what you might imagine when you think of the words ‘Church Coffee Shop’. We serve wonderful, tasty products in a modern, relaxed setting and a warm welcome awaits every customer. Everyone is welcome and young children will really enjoy our purpose built crèche area. Do come along and meet us. Every Blessing, Revered Sylvia Kinder.

Holiday homes for dogs a hit with owners Your Pet’s Paradise, a home boarding business, is branching out in our area. This time last year, owner Anna Bowen had just taken on her first holiday homes for dogs and booked in her first four-legged customer. One year on and her business is going from strength to strength.
A
nna has dog lovers in and around the area who open their homes to dogs while their owners are away. The dogs are treated like one of the family; they love the attention of having someone with them most of the day and enjoy lovely long walks. The phrase ‘they didn’t want to come home’ has cropped up regularly in feedback e-mails. At Your Pet’s Paradise they carefully match the dogs to the right holiday home, ensuring that they have the best time possible and their owners have peace of mind. Dogs can have holidays of their own and not even need a passport!
If you would prefer your dog to have a home from home experience while you are away then Your Pet’s Paradise could be just what you’re looking for. Anna is also looking for extra holiday homes, so if you’re a dog owner with time and love to give get in touch!

PET CARE
Caring for your pet in
hot weather The summer sun is something that we all look forward to enjoying, however for pets the hot weather can be very unpleasant. So here are a few tips to help you keep your pets are as comfortable as possible on hot days. • • • • •
Move garden hutches and runs to shaded areas, or put a lightweight covering over to provide shade. Ensure indoor cages, crates and hutches are out of direct sunlight. Make water available from multiple sources (both indoors and outside). Check water sources throughout the day and top up as appropriate. Apply sun block to areas where hair is thin such as tops of ears and noses (it is best to use products designed for children or sensitive skin, and you should always test the cream on a small area first and leave it for 24 hours to ensure your animal is not going to react to it).
• •
Leave windows open, fans going and air conditioning on inside, especially if you are leaving pets alone for any period of time. Closing curtains can help pets to avoid direct sunlight indoors and keep temperatures down. Clean out litter trays and bedding more frequently. Ensure pets are protected against parasites to prevent infestation from fleas, ticks, mites and other nasties. Rabbits are included in this with fly strike being much more prevalent in hot weather. Provide areas of shade in gardens out of direct sunlight.
•
Try to avoid exercising dogs during the midday sun. Instead take them to wooded/shaded areas or take them out in the early morning or late evening when the sun is weaker. Take water with you when exercising dogs away from home and limit vigorous exercise such as ball games. If you give your dog a toy that you stuff with food, prepare it the night before with something moist and put in the freezer for a longer lasting, cooling treat.
We hope these tips help you and your pet to enjoy the summer sun, and if you have any further questions or concerns please do not hesitate to contact us.
