LETTERS

There must be many who feel the same as Andrew, whose letter is published below. So this is a callout to our older Gazette readers for articles about their life experiences and younger days. It will give some interesting perspectives on life for all generations, and of course, photographs are always great to receive if you have them, as they help to capture these memories.

My name is Kristel Moore. I have been growing my hair for over a year now and plan to have it donated to be made into wigs for children who are suffering from hair loss. I have grown a total of 13 inches to be cut and donated. 8 months ago I unfortunately lost my Grandfather to bile duct cancer. He fought very hard and it was sad to see him go. On that day I promised him I would grow my hair and have it donated, and that's when I heard of The Little Princess Trust. The Little Princess Trust provides real hair wigs, free of charge, to both boys and girls who have lost their hair through cancer treatment and other illnesses, but unfortunately this comes at a price. Just one wig to be made can cost the charity between £350 and £500, plus it can take up to three weeks to make one. Which is why I am holding a fundraising event to support The Little Princess Trust.

by Andrew Wade s you go about your daily life, how often do you walk past an older person without giving them a second glance? This is a pity really, because many of us have led quite eventful lives. Take me for example; I left school at 16 and joined the Royal Navy and by the time I was 24 I had travelled halfway round the world, got married and started a family. During my time in the Navy I served in two aircraft carriers (HMS Victorious and HMS Eagle) and visited six countries (South Africa, Singapore, Hong Kong, the Philippines, Japan and Australia). In between my time at sea I was shore-based in Gosport, Lee-on-the-Solent, Plymouth and the Royal Naval Air Station near Yeovilton in Somerset. I learned how to maintain aircraft radio, radar and navigation equipment along with the air traffic control equipment in Yeovilton’s control tower. (As an aside, if ever you drive down to Devon and Cornwall using the A303, the Fleet Air Arm Museum at RNAS Yeovilton is a great place to take a break).

A

The Navy taught me the value of friendship, discipline and personal hygiene. It also taught me that not everything runs smoothly and it’s how you cope with adversity that counts. After I’d left the Navy we extended our family, bought our first house and took holidays exploring the delights of England, Wales and Scotland. In our later years we were able to visit the USA several times while sampling the Ozark

This event will be taking place on the 12 August at Oxygen Hair Salon, 4 Chimneys Crescent, Hampton Vale from 4 pm onwards, where I will be having my hair cut and donated to The Little Princess Trust.

Mountains in Arkansas, Graceland in Memphis, Tennessee, the Great Smoky Mountains and the Blue Ridge Parkway and last, but not least, Florida. Florida was our favourite. Not only does it have a very famous mouse, it also has some of the best beaches and the best weather in the world. As I look back over the years I wonder where the time has gone, but I wouldn’t have changed any of it – the good times and the bad. Although my wife is no longer with me, having passed away three years ago, I shall be forever grateful to her for keeping me on the right path, and at the risk of preaching I would say to everyone who is starting life with a new partner, treasure what you have, because when it’s gone, it’s gone forever. That said, never put off doing what you want to do if at all possible. Life is short and we should try and fill every minute of every day. So, if you know an older person or have an elderly neighbour, take time to ask them what they did when they were younger; you may get the surprise of your life!

Recognition for Hampton Tiddlers Last month we told you about our excitement to be finalists in the National What’s on 4 Junior Awards 2016. We are pleased to announce that we achieved Highly Commended (2nd place) for Most Outstanding Baby and Toddler Group and our volunteers Emma Pilarski and Claire Drewett were finalists in the ‘Outstanding Volunteers’ category, competition was tough and they were thrilled to have been nominated and placed where they had. Hampton Tiddlers recognise both for their commitment and dedication. Each of our volunteers brings a strength to the table that makes Hampton Tiddlers stand out from the rest. We know we have helped many mums make new friends and overcome that loneliness/ isolation that can be experienced as a new mum. Making a supportive network of friends can seem daunting. Let us try and help you overcome this. Try a session on either a Monday morning or Thursday afternoon. Just be yourself - we as individuals all have different qualities and personalities and we want you to bring it to our group! Just relax and smile. You will be welcomed and you won't regret your decision. Follow our Facebook page for regular updates and news.

COMMUNITY

MEET YOUR LOCAL COUNCILLORS I was born and raised in Peterborough and moved to Hampton in 2003 from Orton Waterville as I liked the idea of a new township and what it had to offer young families.

Don’t look down Scared of heights? Spare a thought then for ‘The Hampton Heights’. The intrepid group from O&H Hampton and GKL Group edged backwards off the top of Peterborough Cathedral on 8 July and abseiled a whopping 150 feet down the side of the ancient West Front Tower. It was a thrill for some, and sheer blinding terror for others. But all eight made it down and have raised more than £3,400 so far for Peterborough 900, the cathedral’s 900th anniversary campaign which is funding new facilities for education, visitors, music and worship, and which will help the cathedral to sustain its work into the future. Roger Tallowin of O&H Hampton and James Brackenbury of GKL Group mustered the troops for the initiative. As Roger says: “This was an opportunity to do something special to support Peterborough Cathedral and to bond our teams together at the same time. We had a chance to inspect the medieval masonry, but I’m not sure who had the scariest look on their faces, us or the gargoyles.” You can still sponsor the team – just Google ‘Virgin Money Giving Hamptonheights’.

N

ot knowing what was going on within Hampton, I started to attend Hampton Residents’ Association meetings in the early days and decided that I wanted to help shape the future of Hampton. I therefore joined the group, which later branched out to form the Parish Council Steering Group and help establish the Parish Council. I am proud of the 5 years I served as Chairman of Hampton Parish Council and various committees and want to ensure that Hampton continues to grow. As well as the Parish Council, I was also involved in setting up the Hampton Vale Community Association which has now become a popular venue for groups and parties. As my children have grown up so has my level of community involvement and

most recently I helped set up the “Hampton in Action” Community group, which was set up to initially to tackle litter “hotspots” in Hampton. The group currently hold monthly Litter Picks on the first Saturday of the month running from March through to November. Each session only lasts one hour running from 10am to 11am. The forthcoming events will be taking place Saturday 6th August , 3rd September , 1st October and final event of the this year will take place on 5th November. See the Facebook page for further details and if you have a spare hour then do come along to help keep Hampton tidy. I have recently become a trustee of the Hampton Sports and Community Association as I wish to see sports within Hampton expand and look forward to our rebranding later on this year.

Brexit life goes on Severing links with the European Union will eventually have far reaching consequences for the legal system of England and Wales. Resolution, the national association for family lawyers, have now said that it is too early to know the full implications for family law but it is clear that we are entering a period of great uncertainty because family law in the UK is intrinsically linked to that in other jurisdictions. Rules for divorce proceedings and reciprocal maintenance arrangements are currently regulated through the European Union and would inevitably be affected by Britain ceasing to be a member state. But it is unlikely that the implications for family law will be a priority for the government and any reforms in the pipeline, such as moving to no fault divorce, establishing a legal framework for cohabitation, will be put on hold. There are also wider issues not directly related to family law but which will have an effect on divorcing couples. Should the short term impact on the financial markets turn into a longer term economic issue, it will affect personal finances, such as pensions, investments and house values. These will all need to be taken into consideration when dealing with financial matters on divorce. We are therefore in a rapidly shifting landscape as regards the financial side of relationship breakdown, but the legal framework is likely to remain intact for the next year or two. Your local family law specialist can provide you with the expert advice required to steer you through these uncertain times.

Back to Netball

In March, Hampton Netball Club launched some free Laura’s Story taster sessions to attract new players who had either After over 10 years of not played netball for years and fancied giving it a go not playing netball or had moved to the area and were looking for a club I recently saw an advert for a ‘Back to join. The sessions have been a huge success with to Netball’ taster a regular group meeting every Saturday morning. session in my local Watching the players develop from the early sessions area, I had actually to watching them now play for some of the established seen the same one last year and teams is a great feeling, but don’t take it all from me… Nancy’s Story I had been thinking about getting back into netball for quite a long time. I had last played over ten years ago and being no spring chicken any more, needless to say I felt pretty nervous about playing again. While scrolling through Facebook I noticed a post about ‘Back to Netball’ sessions being run by Tracy Hammond from Hampton Netball Club. Before I could talk myself out of it I quickly replied to say that I was interested. I received a friendly response telling me the details about the Saturday morning training sessions at Beaumont Way in Hampton, and I duly

turned up to my first session about 3 months ago. I can honestly say I am so happy that I did. Tracy’s sessions are well run, everyone is friendly and accommodating to all levels of ability and fitness. I knew I would be suffering with some aches and pains for a couple of weeks – and I did! However now I feel that I am improving each week that passes. Things have moved pretty quickly too. I have already played two friendly matches with the rest of the Back to Netballers, increased my training to twice a week, covered for other teams when they are short in league matches, and have a tournament lined up in July. I am really enjoying my netball again and look forward to our training sessions and games.

thought about going but then later on chickened out. So this time I decide to go, roping in my sister for moral support, we turned up on a sunny Saturday morning a little unsure and apprehensive of what to expect. After a quick introduction and a few ‘hellos’ we set about doing some simple drills and going over the basics, and before I knew it the final whistle had gone and the session was over. The session was fantastic, it felt so good just being out on the court again, I couldn’t wait for next Saturday! So far, our Back to Netball team has played a few friendly matches which has been a great tool for learning and developing skills in a competitive manner. We are currently training for a tournament in the summer which everyone is very excited for. When I left school I stopped playing netball and was unaware that such a variety of adult teams

even existed but as I have met more people though the club I have discovered a number of different leagues that run throughout the week, almost every night can be a netball night if you like. I try to play or train at least twice a week at minimum but often more when I can fit it in. I am keen to improve and develop so hopefully this will help. Joining a netball team has been such a positive thing for me, not just playing the game, but socially too. It has allowed me to play a game I love on a regular basis again which is great but also to meet so many other people and to become part of a team which is even better. We often have club social events like end of season awards, watching the pros play netball or simply just a good night out. Being part of a large netball club is great, like having a very large extended family! I have met some really interesting people who otherwise I wouldn’t have had the opportunity to and have made some great friendships for life. If anyone is reading this and considering joining a netball team after a long time of not playing, I would definitely say ‘yes join now’ ... it’s a great feeling getting back out there again and being part of team. I only wish I had joined sooner!

Get back into playing football

Hampton Cricket Club As we enter the last month of the 2016 cricket season, it is clear that this has been another momentous year for the club. With new senior and junior teams entering the fray we continue to be a club on the up. That is not to say that we have stopped looking for new talent and members to help further the club and its interests. In fact, I urge anyone interested in playing, or helping the committee, to contact us about where you can fit in. As we do still have a few weeks of cricket left there are plenty of matches still to be held at Clayburn Road, hopefully under clear skies. Most Saturday and Sunday afternoons will see a home game, with the Under 9’s on Sunday mornings. Add the midweek games in too and there is a feast of cricket on show. Hope to see you there. Hamptoncc.org www.facebook.com/HamptonCricketClub2004 Twitter@hampton_c_c 8

We are looking for half decent football players to join our group ‘Hampton 5-a-side’ which organises friendly adult football in Hampton. We play 5 a side games on Tuesday and Thursday evenings on the astro pitch in Hampton Hargate and we run 7 a side tournaments once a month on the 3G pitch at Bushfields. We also now have enough players to field two 11 a side teams which played each other last month (score was Real Madrid 6 Inter Milan 3!). So if you have previously played 11 a side or 5 a side football and are looking to play again locally in

a sociable environment then this is perfect for you. We have also just agreed a sponsorship deal with Maharanis, the Indian restaurant in Hampton Hargate. With their support we have been able to invest in several kits including the Real Madrid home kit (picture attached). If you’re interested then please come down for a trial, it’s only £3 for an hour.

Please call/text Paul on 07780 468836 for more details.

WILDLIFE

e f i l wild

Lakota (Lover of Nature)

of Hampton

A flash of pink caught my eye in a friend’s Vale garden the other day. It was a most delicate shade of pink.

O

bserving it as it alighted on an ivy I noticed that at rest most of the pink had disappeared, save for a couple of long streaks and small patches at the end of the wings. These bold coloured markings warn birds and other predators that this species of moth is unpleasant to eat and should be avoided. The Cinnabar Moth, for that is what it was, is found throughout Britain wherever ragwort and groundsel plants are found. It is on the underside of ragwort leaves that the Cinnabar lays its eggs. A rather less vibrant moth is the Scalloped Oak, which I have frequently seen in our garden. The adult moths of this species fly at night in July and August, but I have seen them during the day around Hampton. They feed on both vegetation and smaller larvae. Although I don’t recall seeing it around Hampton I have to mention the Tiger Moth because it is so beautiful. Like the Cinnabar Moth its striking black and orange markings warn predators that it tastes unpleasant and should be avoided. Its hairy nature also protects it from birds because the hairs cause irritation, even on humans. As an adult the Tiger Moth drinks nectar from flowers. It can be seen from June to August.

A rather more delicate shaded moth, which I have seen in Hampton, is the Light Emerald. This can also be seen from June to August. This can be more easily spotted due to its habit of resting with its wings open, displaying its pastel green shade to the full. There are 2 500 species of UK moths. The greater variety of plants in your garden the greater variety of moths you will attract. This is because some moths feed only on tree leaves, some only on grasses and others on plants. A typical garden can support over a hundred species of moths. The moths themselves also provide food for garden wildlife such as birds, bats, toads and hedgehogs. One interesting fact is that one nest of blue tit chicks can consume about 15 000 moth caterpillars. People often wonder what the difference is between a moth and a butterfly. Moths mostly fly during the night and butterflies during the day. Butterflies mostly hold their wings upright when resting whereas moths drape them down their backs or to the sides. Often moths’ bodies are plumper and fuzzier than butterfly bodies. But there are exceptions to the rule.

Christ the Servant King The Parish Church of Hampton The school summer holidays are now well under way. It can be a challenging time as many weekly activities stop during August. However, our activities for children, youths and under fives don’t stop, we keep going, just as the love of God never stops and keeps going. Every Sunday morning during our 10am service we have age appropriate activities for children and on Sunday 14 August we’re planning a fun morning in the open air for our children and young people who will be able to enjoy games on the field opposite the church, including optional water games, so bring a change of clothing as you could get wet! After the service the fun will continue with adults able to join in with a game of quick cricket. So come and join us at our service at 10am to join in the fun. Our Ark Under Fives groups are also having special meetings during the summer and primary school children are welcome to join younger brothers and sisters. Happy Summer. CALA Homes launches at the Hamptons

Stunning shutters to create a modern and contemporary style to your home

Upmarket award winning housebuilder CALA Homes is launching its first ever development of new homes in Peterborough. Set alongside open parkland, lakes and a nature reserve, The Mallards offers a selection of two, three, four and five bedroom contemporary homes in the sought after Hampton Vale area of the city.

C

ALA is opening two brand new four and five bedroom showhomes on Saturday 23d and Sunday 24th July and is encouraging people to register now to attend the VIP launch event. Visitors to the invitation only event will be given the first opportunity to view the development’s stunning new showhomes, as well as find out about the homes on offer. The Hamptons are a series of village communities to the south of Peterborough, boasting a rich community life, great facilities and extensive open space and parkland. It has become one of the most sought-after areas in East Anglia for couples, growing families and those seeking a relaxed retirement. Chris Roads, sales and marketing director for CALA Homes (North Home Counties), said: “CALA Homes has a reputation for building high quality homes in premium locations and we are delighted to be launching our first development at Hampton Vale, bringing much needed new homes to the area. Peterborough is the UK’s second fastest growing city with the population set to grow by 30 per cent by 2031, so it’s no surprise that the region is becoming a property hotspot. “The Mallards has an idyllic setting within a vibrant neighbourhood with a bustling cultural and sporting life. Hampton Vale is considered to be among one of the most environmentallysustainable communities in the region, enjoying an enviable

reputation of safety, giving a real sense of peace and tranquillity to its residents. “We expect demand for these properties to be high so would encourage anyone thinking of moving to register their interest now for the launch event and be one of the first to view the brand new show home.” The Hamptons is a haven for wildlife. It has been designated a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) and boasts one of Europe’s most successful great crested newt populations. The Mallards is close to the village centre of Hampton Vale with its convenience stores, schools, pub and restaurants. The larger Serpentine Green Shopping Centre is a short five minute drive away featuring high street names such as Waitrose, Tesco, Boots, H&M, Next, plus numerous food outlets. It is also well placed for a high standard of education with Hampton Vale Primary School and Hampton Harrogate Primary School less than a mile away. For older children, there is Hampton Secondary School and College, which was rated as Outstanding by OFSTED. For commuters, it is within easy reach of A1(M) and is a 10 minute drive from Peterborough train station. Prices start from £185,000 and Help to Buy and Part Exchange is also available. To register your interest to attend the exclusive VIP launch event.

Your guide to

Living in Hampton

In association with

O&H Hampton - community update meeting More than 80 residents gathered at Hampton College on 5 July for an update from O&H Hampton on the latest developments in the Hamptons.

R

oger Tallowin, general manager at O&H Hampton, and his colleague Jeff Manners brought welcome news: the imminent opening of the new Krispy Kreme outlet, a Costa drive-thru and a new Greene King Farmhouse Inn. New homes sites are coming on fast too. Cala Homes should open the show homes at The Mallards development in Hampton Vale in early August. The first homes at Abbey Homes’ Cumberland Place 130 home development on Hampton Avenue in the town centre are now occupied. And McCarthy and Stone is planning to build 45 retirement homes nearby. Across the A15, in the area now known as Hamptons East, a series of new villages are also taking shape. Anyone heading south on the A15 will see construction

progressing well on the new Hampton Gardens secondary school which will open in September 2017. Helen Price, executive headteacher of Hampton College, showed everyone the latest designs and features including popular outside dining area and amphitheatre. The new secondary school will primarily take students from the new homes in Hamptons East and Yaxley, but does provide additional school place capacity for the existing Hampton villages and will share a sixth form with Hampton College. Helen Price also shared the Hampton Academies Trust’s thinking and plans to prepare a Free School bid to open a new primary school in Hampton East in 2019. “The Trust’s aim is to ensure there are sufficient school places for primary age children, as the

three current primary schools in the Hamptons are all full,” she said. Local families will be surveyed for their views and support for the bid over coming months. Next to Hampton Gardens School, Persimmon Homes has submitted a planning application for 869 homes. Roger Tallowin gave his prediction that, once planning is granted and Persimmon has completed on the purchase of the land, work on roads and homes could start in September – which may mean the first new homes available next summer. A bit further south, in Hampton Water, O&H Hampton is progressing well with its plans for a new tree-lined avenue and parkland area including cricket pitch. The first area for 275 new homes there is being negotiated and designed too.

Roger Tallowin answered a wide range of questions and closed the meeting with a reminder of the many ways in which local residents can help to promote the Hamptons, including by contributing to the Wikipedia page and using the #Hamptons hashtag on Twitter and other social media posts. A new website for the Hamptons is coming soon at www.ohhampton.co.uk and anyone can propose new pins to be added to its interactive community map – including pins to promote clubs, shops, business, restaurants, local services and events. The new website will also include a facility so anyone can sign up to local news and updates from O&H Hampton.

Hampton Vale Hampton Hargate Another busy school year has ended and now seems a good time to reflect upon all the great things that have been happening at Hampton Hargate. It’s been a busy term with sports days, trips, science week and the Year 6 residential packed with activities including the high/ low ropes, zip wire and archery. Year 5 children meanwhile participated in the Festival of Learning at Ferry Meadows. This was an exciting opportunity for them with a range of different pursuits on offer. Our Summer Fun Day on 2nd July was also a huge success and we were very pleased to see so many people supporting our event despite the weather forecast! A night at the film awards proved once again to be successful and our dancers at the recent

24

Cresset Dance Festival made us proud. In sports news – well done to our fabulous Year 4 who took part in a Cricket and Rounders festival at Hampton College and won! We also recently participated in the Peterborough School Swimming Gala and won that too! We are also very proud of our Football team who have shown fantastic team spirit and great skills. They have done really well this year as runners up in the Posh Community Cup and 5th in the Peterborough Primary Cup! And finally thank you to Hampton Parish Council for funding our Queen’s Birthday tea party celebrations – we had a wonderful afternoon! We are certainly ready for a Summer break and look forward to seeing everyone in September!

A fantastic series of events and learning showcases ended the school year at Hampton Vale Primary School, with marauding Vikings, brave superheroes, adventurous residential visits and tear-jerking productions all part of the mix. Residential visits for Years Four and Six and a day-long Festival of Learning at Ferry Meadows for Year Five saw about 200 children try their hand at activities including kayaking and climbing. Children in Years Three and Six found out more about food sources at the Food and Farming Festival at the East of England Showground, while on the same day Year Five met those marauding Vikings and Anglo-Saxons, thanks to reenacting enthusiasts, at the city's Schools Heritage Festival. A busy month for the Year Six children also saw them present to great acclaim their production of "The Lion King" to parents, carers and the rest of the school.

A Business Day also saw them setting up their own companies within school and offering services such as car-washing and catering. A theme of "Real-life Superheroes" brought visits by local police officers and ambulance service personnel, who spoke about their work to the Reception children. A summer garden party and a dress-up day, on which the children themselves dressed as superheroes, ended the school year for Reception. Meanwhile, special learning events for Year Three included pupils reenacting a Roman battle, and for Year Two included the setting up of a pop-up travel agency as part of their theme learning. The school year ended with the now traditional Celebration Evening, at which learners' achievements were awarded, and the farewell presentation to the Year Six children who will be moving on to their secondary schools in September.

Little Acorns

So many things have been happening at Little Acorns and there is so much more fun to come. In the Daisy Room, the children have been learning all about themselves and creating paintings by looking at themselves and then painting what they see. There are lots of exciting times ahead for our pre-schoolers who will be leaving us very shortly. They have been a pleasure to have at Little Acorns and we wish them lots of luck in their future learning. We have watched some of our children grow since they were small babies and now they are off on their new adventure. We would also like to say ‘thank you’ to the parents for being so supportive. We are looking forwarding to welcoming the new children starting with us over the next few months. We still have some spaces available to start at Little Acorns Day Nursery and Montessori school in September. For more information please contact us on 01733 244000 or email littleacorns.daynursery@yahoo.co.uk

Hampton College Primary Phase

It was back to school, last September, When Hampton College staff remembered, A new school year was due to start, And so with excitement in our hearts, We welcomed the children one by one, For a year of learning, joy and fun, And what a year it has been, Spiders, snakes and birds were seen, Around the school on a visit, Nobody wanted to miss it. Reception classes have been to the farm, And Rutland Water; still and calm. Year 1 went hunting at the museum, For dinosaurs; did you see ‘em? Year 2 have been to Kenilworth Fort, And Stibbington too, they were taught, To find some bugs and minibeasts, And eat their lunch: what a feast! Year 3 went back in time, and then, Found themselves at Flag Fen, Exploring items from the past, What a day; they had a blast. And so the summer hols are here, We smile and say “What a year!”.

Hampton College What a hectic end to the summer term - events which have happened in the past few weeks include: Secondary and Primary Phase Sports Days, which saw parents turn out to cheer on our young & talented athletes as they competed in a range of sporting activities; Year 11 Leavers’ Day, which included tears, hoodies, competitions and a BBQ!; Higher Education Information Evening; Year 6 Induction day and the spectacular Arts Celebration Evening which showcased the wonderful student work of Hampton College. There is still lots more to come,

including a range of exciting trips and activities during Enrichment Week, including Camp and trips to Paris and Belgium. Fairy-tale ending Big hair, ball gowns and expensive cars everywhere: Thursday 7 July saw a fairytale ending to secondary school life as the Year 11 Prom took place. Both the boys and girls looked truly stunning as they swapped school uniform for elegant evening attire. The students enjoyed a three course dinner followed by an evening of laughing and dancing with friends and teachers.

top tips

to keep your hormones

beautifully balanced

Hormones are your body’s chemical messengers and affect many aspects of overall health. Keep them balanced! Here’s how: • Eat your greens: fibrous cruciferous  vegetables (S) keep hormones balanced with their Vitamin B content and enzymes which support the liver. • Eat regularly and enough protein. This  keeps blood sugar levels balanced and can combat cravings for sugary foods. • ‘Good’ omega-3 fats found in oily fish, avocado, egg yolks, nuts, seeds can balance out hormones and help reduce feelings off irritability and water retention. • Take part in exercise you find enjoyable and  also calming activities such as meditation and yoga. These reduce the effects of stress on the body and mind which can radically disturb hormones. Vitamin C is an ‘Anti-

Eat foods rich in magnesium (Brazil nuts, almonds, pumpkin seeds, brown rice, baked beans… and chocolate!) or consider a supplement. Magnesium is a calming mineral and can promote good sleep as well as ease painful cramping. The mineral zinc balance hormones, particularly in regard to skin health. Think beef, sesame seeds, walnuts, chicken and chick peas. Consider adaptogenic herbs such as ashwagandha and rhodiola. They protect against excess stress and therefore look after hormones.

Do a deep conditioning treatment regularly. Try one like this Moroccanoil intense hydrating mask available at Imagine spa, Orton Hotel and Spa, £23.95. Shampoo hair in warm water and rinse hair with cool water to close the hair follicles. This will limit damage during styling and will also maximize shine. Always use a heat protector, like this one, when styling your hair. GHD Heat Protect Spray, John Lewis £12.95 Swop every other wash for a cleansing conditioner. Shampoos can sometimes do ‘too good a job’ at cleaning your hair and strips out the natural oils, leaving hair frizzy and dry. A no ‘poo’ cleansing treatment avoids this and helps replenish the natural oils in your hair. Ojon Rare blend moisture rich cleansing conditioner John Lewis £18.50 Silicone free conditioner. Many conditioners contain silicones which coat the hair creating a smooth feel and shiny look. Although this can look nice, it’s not always great for your hair, especially curly hair. If you find your hair is dry and frizzy try this range from The Body Shop which has no silicones, paraffins or sulphates. Body Shop Rainforest Balance shampoo & conditioner range £2.00 Diet and nutrition. Don’t underestimate the effect your diet can have on your hair. Eating foods rich in protein, iron and vitamin C will encourage strong and healthy hair.

Make your own hair mask Ingredients • egg yolk • 1/2 mashed avocado • Spoon of honey Mash together. Massage into damp hair and leave for 30 minutes and then rinse thoroughly, first with warm water the with cool water. Repeat every 2 weeks.

FINANCIAL FINANCIAL

MONEY MATTERS by Pete Bird, Bird & Co Certified Public Accountants

Do you have any tax or business questions? If so email Pete Bird of Bird & Co info@birdandco.ltd and if of general interest we will publish them here.

IMPORTANT NOTICE: Due to personal circumstances, Mark Laws has left the practice and following this change, we have reverted back to our previous name of Bird & Co. Question I am self employed and was paying my Class 2 NIC by direct debit, but HMRC have not collected any contributions from me since July 2015. Why is this? Answer Previously the self employed paid Class 2 NIC six monthly or paid by monthly direct debit. Both of these methods have been replaced with a single annual calculation as part of your SA tax return. This already happens with your Class 4 national insurance. The SA will work out how much you need to pay for the year, based on the information you provide in your SA return. Also, if you are under the small profits threshold (currently £5,965 for 2016/17) you will have the option to voluntarily pay the Class 2 NIC (currently £2.80 per week for 2016/17) in order to protect certain benefits and your State Pension.

Personal Tax Account As part of the governments vision to modernise the tax system new personal tax accounts are being introduced to eventually replace tax returns. The system of online accounts will be similar to online banking, HMRC says. The new accounts will allow people to see their tax details and make payments at any time of the day or year. HMRC’s aim is that by 2020 the new digital accounts will encompass all taxpayers, individual or corporate. Businesses including the selfemployed and landlords will, from April 2018, have to update HMRC every quarter where this activity is their main source of income, but some are saying this could be delayed as the UK have voted to leave European Union. There will be also be an obligation to report quarterly where there is a secondary source of income worth more than £10,000 and the main income is from employment or from a pension. You will be able to use your personal tax account to: • check your income tax estimate and tax code • fill in, send and view a personal tax return • claim a tax refund • check and manage your tax credits • check your State Pension • track tax forms that you’ve submitted online • check or update your Marriage Allowance • tell HMRC about a change of address • check or update benefits you get from work, eg company car details and medical insurance More services will be added in the future.
