Local mum brings new musical adventure to residents at Avery House Care Home
I
t is often said that music is an art form that transcends age. Whether you are 4 years old and able to dance and sing along, or 84 years old and simply able to tap a foot, music can transport and resonate with us all. Bringing generations together, Carla has involved children and parents from her Jo Jingles classes with the residents at Avery House to take part in 30-minute sessions involving juice and biscuits, storytime and a few songs. The concept of intergenerational interactions is one that has been widely researched and proven as a way of
benefitting the young and elderly. Centred on the simple idea that both parties can bring new energy and knowledge into each other’s lives. Carla says “We had a wonderful musical time at Avery House and it’s a privilege to bring different age groups together and watch them interact so positively.” Resident Jean Sewell said ‘it’s so lovely to see the children here today, it has made me want to cry!’ Staff member Laura Judd said ‘seeing the residents' faces light up as the children were singing, dancing and playing was just lovely."

How do I legally separate?
A “legal separation” is not an expression that a family lawyer recognises. Any separation between married couples, or indeed cohabiting couples, is legal. What people probably mean is, a separation that formally ends the relationship, such as the start of the two year separation period needed as a ground for divorce.
Peterborough Marriott Leisure Club offers something for everyone and a little bit more than you would expect from a health and fitness club. Including ordering food from our pool side menu and a baby pool where the little ones can play safely.
T: 01733 375599 www.marriottleisure.co.uk Lynch Wood, Peterborough Business Park, Peterborough, PE2 6GB
Guiding you through the process of applying for probate or undertaking a full administration of an estate.
The term doesn’t really apply to cohabiting couples, because cohabitation is not legal to start with. If you want to obtain legal rights as a cohabitee, please see your solicitor about a Cohabitation Agreement. Concentrating on the relationship that is protected by law, namely marriage, if you and your spouse are certain that your marriage is over, you may not want to start divorce proceedings straightaway. However, there may be complicated financial issues that need dealing with before waiting for a two year separation period. In this situation a Separation Deed can be drafted which has the same
effect as a consent financial order in divorce, except it hasn’t been approved at Court. But it is enforceable as a contract and if need be, can be used in court proceedings to ensure the terms agreed are carried out. Just remember, once you are separated from your spouse, whether you want to refer to it as a legal separation or not, both of you still have the same rights one against another in respect of the assets in the marriage, be they capital, income or pensions. Don’t assume that the longer the separation, the weaker the case for sharing your assets will be. Do consult a Family Law specialist if you have any doubt about this.
Whichever option you choose, you will get the same dedicated, professional, sympathetic and efficient service.

Will Symons Practice Manager of Hampton Health
Hampton Health
Opening arrangements over the Christmas / New Year break Will Symons the Practice Manager at Hampton Health gives information about the Surgery's Christmas opening hours. Patients at this and other GP surgeries will need to plan for Christmas this year. Because of the way the days fall we, like most practices, are going to be shut for four days. There is no reason for this to create any problems provided you plan in advance to ensure you have enough medicine to last you over this break. If you are going away with family please allow for this as well. You may think this is a silly thing to say but each year we have a last minute panic from patients who are concerned that they will run out of medicine over Christmas. Please do not be one of them! So, we are closed this year on Monday 25 and Tuesday 26 December. We return on Wednesday 27 December with our usual opening hours between 7am and 6pm as normal. We are also closed on Monday 1 January 2018, opening up on Tuesday 2 January with our usual opening hours of 7am, closing at 6pm. I mentioned medication before and remind you that the NHS Standard is for a 48 hour turnaround (even though we often manage better than this). Please therefore get any medication
requests in to us by Wednesday 20 December for the Christmas break and Wednesday 27 December for the New Year. Although they already know this we will be giving the same message to the pharmacies we regularly deal with. Appointments in the week leading up to Christmas and in the three days between Christmas and New Year will all be available to book on the day only with the GPs and nurses - pre-bookable appointments will not be routinely offered on these days. We are putting on additional baby immunisation clinics in the week running up to Christmas so if these are due please telephone the surgery and get your child booked in. Clinics re-commence in the first week of the New Year. When the surgery is closed and you require urgent medical assistance or advice which cannot wait until the surgery re-opens, please call NHS111. For life threatening situations the 999 service will be available. Finally,, I hope that you are able to enjoy this time of the year and that you get to spend it with friends and family – I wish all our patients and anyone else reading this a very happy and healthy Christmas.

New habitats for Hamptons’ endangered species
In association with
The Hamptons is the first of its kind to receive a Natural England project licence for its work with great crested newts and water voles.
T
he licence allows for development to take place in Hampton East while making substantial efforts to protect these endangered species. Natural England is a non-departmental public body, sponsored by the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs. It advises the government on how to protect nature and landscape in England for people to enjoy. The licence will allow O&H to move great crested newts and water voles living in the development area and relocating them to a purpose-built habitat on the site. Before this takes place, an Ecological Clerk of Works will be present to brief the contractors to ensure relocation only happens where unavoidable. The licence is for a fixed two-year period across the whole site which is more than 5 square kilometres in size. The licence will be revised every two years across the lifespan of the site.
Without this special licence, some of the activities to move the habitats would have been unlawful. It recognises the dedication and sensitivity O&H has shown towards protecting the great crested newts and water voles’ communities. It’s a proud moment as it shows that wellneeded facilities and infrastructure such as roads and schools can be built alongside a rare and remarkable site of scientific special interest. Back in 1997 when the first homes were built in The Hamptons, much work had already been done to protect the habitats for both great crested newts and water voles by the creation of new communities for their human friends. Both water voles and great crested newts are species under threat. Water voles were once common in Britain and inspired the character of ‘Ratty’ in Kenneth Grahame’s 1908 classic The Wind in the Willows. Since then the vole’s numbers have plummeted, and it is the UK’s fastest declining mammal.
Great crested newt numbers have also declined, owing to loss of habitat, and both voles and newts are now heavily protected by law. The good news is that Hampton Nature Reserve has increased the local population of great crested newts from 24,000 to 34,000 over the last 10 years, a 40% increase. It is now Europe’s largest colony. The licence means that plans for Hamptons East can continue. There will be four new villages to the east of the A15: Hampton Beach, Hampton Gardens, Hampton Woods and Hampton Water. Alongside the existing lakes, woodlands and open spaces available to the Hampton Hargate and Hampton Vale communities, these new villages will provide further leisure opportunities such as sailing, swimming, walking and bird watching. Take a look at the O&H Hampton website for more information on Hampton East at (http://www.ohhampton.co.uk/about-thehamptons/hamptons-east)
If you want to find out more about great crested newts and water voles, visit the O&H Hampton website which has information on nature in the Hamptons and the work O&H does with wildlife charity Froglife. www.ohhampton.co.uk/living-working/nature/

EDUCAT ION
Hargate Primary
Hampton College
The first two weeks back at HC have whizzed by and dare I say it… we are on the countdown to Christmas! There have been so many student successes it would be impossible to mention them all, but HC really do have some very talented actors, singers, performers and so many incredible sportsmen and women. Amelia Devine and Kai Chilvers both from Year 8, recently competed in the Fenland Cross Country League at Crowland. Amelia stormed to victory in the Year 7 & 8 girls’ race. Kai followed, winning comfortably with 200 metres to spare. One of our Year 9 students, Jessica Moorfoot, recently participated in trials for the East Midlands Girls U15s rugby football team. Jessica performed extremely well on the day and she has successfully been selected to be part of the team. The Year 7 Rugby team won the Peterborough School Cup. They went nine games undefeated in the tournament and beat Kings in the final 10-5. This is the first time we have won that competition for six years. Well done lads! Our students were recognised by the Muslim Council of Peterborough for their exceptional attainment and progress at GCSE and A Level. It was a celebration for all students of Peterborough schools of all faith. We are very proud of them. Hampton College students were amongst those recognised
at an award ceremony in London in October. Yasmin Noble, Segun Okunrinboye and Aaliyah Hussain were recognised for their outstanding achievement at GCSE in 2017 and Bradley Matthews received an award for overcoming difficulties earlier in his school career, to go on to be successful in his examinations. The annual event is staged by PiXL, an association representing nearly half of all secondary schools in England, which promotes high aspirations and supports schools in preparing students for public examinations. The event was held at the Methodist Central Hall in Westminster, just across from Big Ben and the Houses of Parliament. Our own Nathan Copland performed to a packed auditorium of young people, teachers and parents. Nathan performed his own composition and very much held his own in an impressive line-up of performers, which included a full gospel choir, an opera singer, a Brit School guitarist and a dance group. The Sixth Form held their annual, and as always, fantastic quiz night last week and raised lots of money for the charity Children of Adam.
Hampton Tiddlers We held our AGM this November; we've had a great year thanks to our dedicated volunteers and everyone who supported us. Cally was nominated as Hampton Tiddlers Volunteer of the Year 2017. She has been volunteering since September 2015 and is one of our most committed volunteers as well as being a member of the management team. Quoting from members "Cally is dedicated, works hard, funny, a wonderfully organised mum and a story teller with kid-creative imagination." Some of our volunteers completed 5 Star Focus training with Peterborough Council for Voluntary Service and were awarded with certificates at the AGM. We've had lots of popular music
younggazette
sessions throughout September, October and November. We even visited the local theatre the Undercroft for a show! More music sessions are planned for December as well as fun craft sessions, painting ceramics and painting love on the rocks. This month, sadly we said 'goodbye' to a few volunteers as they move on to new jobs and other commitments. Thank you Suzi, Eileen, Zoe and Nilufer for your great work while you were with us. We are very pleased to welcome Kirsty, Emma, Huan and Nicola to the team.
If you are interested in volunteering with us, please get in touch via hamptontiddlers@gmail.com
Christmas is nearly upon us and the children have been practising for their school plays – we are sure all their hard work will be reflected in their performances on the night! We are looking forward to our Friends' Christmas Fayre on Friday 1st December which promises to be a fun filled afternoon with lots of Christmas cheer. Pop along between 3.30pm and 5.30pm and you will find a Santa’s Grotto, a Kids' Only Shop, Glitter Tattoos, Bling a Bauble, the School Choirs and much much more! In other news, we had our annual Powerdown fortnight recently. The children learnt all about energy saving through a series of lessons and activities and even enjoyed an exciting afternoon of reading by torchlight. The whole school enjoyed some fantastic dance lessons as part of our Languages Week;
'thank you' to all the volunteers who came in to teach the children. We especially enjoyed learning an Irish jig and a Russian dance. Once again our Anglo Saxon days were a huge success. They were crammed full with interesting activities. There was storytelling, traditional Saxon games, a re-enactment of the Battle of Hastings and the story of Beowulf! The children came in dressed for the occasion which really helped the day come to life.
Little Acorns Day Nursery and Montessori School We would like to wish all of our families a very merry Christmas and a happy new year. Thank you for all of your support over the past year and we look forward to seeing you and welcoming all our new families in the new year. The lead up to Christmas is always exciting as we have lots of events to celebrate. This year the children particularly enjoyed making lots of mess creating their firework pictures, using different glitters and paints. We are currently taking bookings for the New Year. If you are looking for a nursery space or would like some more information please call on 01733244000 or email littleacorns.daynursery@yahoo.co.uk
Vale Primary November saw our Year 4s enjoy a fantastic residential in Norfolk trying bouldering, caving and abseiling amongst other activities, and Year 6s' amazing Lion King production. We also commemorated Armistice Day with a special assembly where
we lit candles, laid poppies, and stood together in silence while The Last Post was played. Our Reception children made their own poppies and had their own Remembrance Service in their garden, where their poppies are still on display.

hamptoncommunity Hampton Seniors
The Hampton Seniors grew a variety of fruit and vegetables on the allotment this summer.
Christ the Servant King the Parish Church of Hampton This will be a sign to you: you will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger.’ (Luke 2:12) With every passing year, we seem to see more and more Christmas-themed products and offers, with every business and organisation trying to make Christmas 'theirs'. Some shops even change their logos to a Christmas version, so we cannot possibly forget what season it is the second November 1st ticks round. It is easy to complain about the commercialisation of Christmas, but at the same time, it is wonderful that the celebration of Christmas is something that still unites us as a special time of the year. Yet we should remember that there were no luxury decorations to remind people that the first Christmas was approaching. Instead, God sent ordinary people as prophets to foretell the coming of the Messiah. When Jesus was born in Bethlehem, the angels who appeared to the shepherds reminded them of one of the prophecies, telling them to look for a baby wrapped in cloths…and that was it. Perhaps we might have expected a more dramatic setting than a manger, but God chose instead to arrive in this world with humility, amongst the poorest of the poor. So when we look up at all the Christmas decorations this year, and rightly honour how much trouble and expense people have gone to in order to make this season special, let’s also remember that the original sign of Christmas was without glitz and glamour. It was a helpless baby, Jesus Christ himself. To find out more about how this first Christmas changed the world, please join us at any one of our events or service this December. Many blessings, Rachel

The club grew beetroot, tomatoes, lettuce, green beans, peas, potatoes, rhubarb and courgettes, and the raised beds have been weeded and covered over till next spring when the growing season starts again. It is hoped the locals of Hampton enjoyed all that was grown. Hampton Seniors look forward to doing the same next year. Plans for the Christmas Party/ lunch are going ahead and so is the first day trip to Bletchley Park more on that in 2018. It's been a good year for the Seniors, welcoming four new people to the group. It's good to see everyone enjoying themselves. Hampton Seniors send their best wishes and hope you all have a great Christmas.

‘Tis the Season To Be Jolly? Turn on the television or the radio or look in shop windows and everywhere there are images of happy families having a great Christmas time. It's impossible to ignore. However, there are numerous reasons that someone might not look forward to Christmas - money worries, family tensions, loneliness, isolation or mental health problems. These don't simply vanish when the holidays are near. In fact, these stresses can be worse at this time of year. While some of us are celebrating with our families, others are suffering, often in silence. While some of us are struggling to find “that perfect gift”, others are struggling to find the next meal or desperate for the feelings of sadness and darkness to go away once and for all. The holiday season is a time when so much emphasis is put upon joy and happiness that
people who are struggling may hide their real feelings to keep other people happy. So, away from the idyllic images and all the hype around the festive celebrations, let’s look at how we can all really help, not just at Christmas but all year round. Often people don’t know what to do when faced with someone who is struggling, but it’s simple, just be there for them. Notice their feelings and don’t be afraid to ask how they’re doing. By giving the gift of listening and taking time to understand what’s going on in our own and others’ lives, more people may be encouraged to open up this Christmas and ask for the support they need.
Here at the Young Persons Counselling Service we provide free, confidential counselling to 11 – 16 year olds across Peterborough. We’re here to help. Contact us on 0800 634 4395.

Feed the bees not just the birds December is often considered the first proper month of winter and culminates with the festivities around giving and the closure of the old year.
T
his is a time of year when tradition again has it that people put out food for the birds, ensuring the ice is broken on bird baths and ponds, and exchanging cards often adorned with cute and cuddly animals in winter scenes. Few probably think about the bugs at this time of year and again, traditionally, few if any can be seen as most are either in hibernation or in a period of stasis as eggs and pupae await the warmth of spring. Recent years have nonetheless seen warmer, wetter winters meaning many species are not in hibernation. Bees are often spotted scavenging for pollen and nectar in the heart of winter. This is a difficult and tiring task for our bees as flying is restricted by rain and heavy winds and the number of flowers in bloom is rare indeed.
When putting out food for the birds think about the bugs too. Can you add some flowering glory to your winter garden with early bulbs such as snowdrops, aconites and crocus which provide an early nectar boon through the winter. You would need to buy plants already in the green, or budding, to add that dash of colour and food. Viburnum tinus and winter jasmine are two more winter flowerers of great benefit to add. If all that seems too late and or too difficult, why not pop a jar of (preferably local) honey out in the garden with the lid off? You will be amazed at the number of bees you can spot visiting the jar, harvesting and taking back to the nest to see the winter through.
Saving the small things that run the planet.

O
ne of the reasons why the robin has been traditionally associated with Christmas is their link with Victorian postmen’s red tunics. Due to the red colour the postmen were often nicknamed ‘Robins’, and soon robins began to appear on Victorian Christmas cards, representing the postmen making their seasonal rounds. They are welcomed into gardens around Hampton, with many finding a perch to watch us turning over the soil and then flitting down to pinch a worm or two. They appear less nervous than other garden visitors, and have been known to become so tame that they will eat from a person’s hand. In this respect, I remember the robin that used to visit my aunt’s home when I was a child. It showed no fear and would visit her kitchen on a daily basis eating scraps from the floor. Once it had had its fill it would then hop through the back door, returning as usual the next day. Although my aunt’s robin would eat scraps, in the wild robins feed on insects, worms, seeds and berries. Robins are friendly to us humans, but to each other perhaps less so because they are
Robins seem to be everywhere at Christmas time: on Christmas cards, plates, mugs, cushions and all manner of things. But actually seeing one around Hampton is the greatest delight. Their beautifully rounded shape, red breast (or is it more of an orange?), tuneful song and flitting movement mark out the robin as Britain’s favourite seasonal bird.
fiercely territorial, and will aggressively chase other robins from their area. They are one of the few birds that sing all year round, due to this need of holding on to their territory. Their spring and summer song is, however, stronger, due to the additional need of attracting a mate, than their autumn/winter one. Robins are adapted to life in a low light, and are often active in dimly lit areas, such as around the street lamps of Hampton. If you listen carefully you can hear them singing during the hours of darkness; I have often heard them myself. As the weather becomes colder think of the traditional rhyme, ‘The North Wind’, and leave a few scraps out during the icy weather for our red breasted friend: The north wind doth blow, And we shall have snow, And what will poor Robin do then? Poor thing. He’ll sit in a barn, And keep himself warm, And hide his head under his wing, Poor thing.

Willow Brook Farm Shop
food&drink
The Christmas season is the busiest time of the year for Willow Brook Farm Shop and that’s no surprise. Conveniently situated between Stamford and Peterborough you’re guaranteed not only excellent produce but a friendly Farm Shop welcome.
R
osemary Morton explains why people come back year after year: “Our 'field to fork' ethic is as important at Christmas as it is at any time of the year and our customers value this. Provenance is at our heart - people want to know about what they’re buying and where it came from and our expert Butchers are always pleased help. Our suppliers are local where possible and we’re incredibly proud of our own home reared beef.” Of course, being a farm shop it’s not just meat on offer - there’s seasonal vegetables, accompaniments and other artisan products too. The food hampers
make great gifts and if you have a foodie in the family then there’s pork pie making evenings available as a gift package. In the run up to Christmas make the most Willow Brook’s Christmas offers. If you place your order before the 1st December, you win the chance to get it for free! The website has the details along with other offers like the Christmas meat packs, recipes and pick up days, willowbrookfarmshop.co.uk Finally, Rosemary adds: “If you haven’t been before, come along. Have a look at what we have to offer and stop for some tea and cake in our Granary Tea Room, you won’t be disappointed."

Learn to sing for FREE with
Hereward Harmony There are many men who would love to sing. Most never get around to it, don’t have the opportunity, or may be too self-conscious to give it a go. The simple fact is that just about everyone can sing, so what could be better than a free course that will help you discover your voice?
H
ereward Harmony is a wellestablished male Barbershop Close Harmony Chorus. To celebrate our 30th Anniversary we are running a ‘Learn to Sing’ Course at the Orton Wistow Community Centre, PE2 6XN. The course will be each Thursday from 7.30pm to 10.00pm 8 February to 15 March 2018. You do not have to read music and will sing a part alongside at least one of our experienced singers. You will receive
sheet music and teach tracks that will allow you to practice during the week. We are a friendly and sociable chorus and can promise that you will enjoy the experience. It doesn’t matter whether you are new to singing or can already sing but are looking for a different style of music. Progress will be rapid and you may be surprised at how sweet the sound of a four-part harmony is.

Self Assessment tax payments
BLINDS & CURTAINS
Curtains&Roman Blinds
Self-employed persons and other individuals who submit a self-assessment (SA) tax return should bear in mind that there are only two months until the electronic filing and payment deadline for 2016/2017 that is 31 January 2018. If you have not filed the 2016-17 SA return yet, or at the very least crunched the numbers to work out if you owe any arrears of tax for 201617, you may want to attend to this as soon as possible. Otherwise, you will be shortening the period when you have time to consider gathering funds together to meet any tax payment on 31 January 2018. On the same date, 31 January 2018, you will also need to make a payment on account for the following tax year, 2017/2018. Basically, if the total tax exceeds the “de-minus” figure of £1,000, this will be based on fifty percent of your liability for 2016-17 with a similar payment July 2018. So again, knowing what the earlier year’s liability is will provide the information you need to save for this additional tax payment. As we have outlined previously, if your income is reducing during the current year (2017/18) you can elect for payments on account to be reduced. If you miss the 31 January 2018 deadline for filing your SA return, you will incur an automatic late filing penalty of £100 that will increase to £10 per day if not filed promptly thereafter. This is all part of the basic self-assessment planning we undertake for clients. If you have previously managed your own tax filing, and would like to out-source this annual chore, we would be delighted to hear from you.
We have discontinued showing dates to remember, but they are still available on our website at www.birdandco.ltd/News
