As we approach the Christmas season, there are many words, greetings and messages shared. But there is no message that matches the message of Christmas itself, a message found in the words of the Bible: “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him.”
Jesus gave up the glories of heaven and came to earth over 2000 years ago as a baby, born supernaturally. He came at God’s timing in fulfillment of many prophecies, born in the squalor of a stable in Bethlehem. “Emmanuel”, which means, “God with us”. He brought a message of love and forgiveness. The true message of Christmas makes all the difference in the world. It is a reliable message. It is a good news message. It is a personal message that changed lives 2000 years ago and still changes lives

today. CSK Church would love to welcome you to celebrate with us at one or more of the special services and events we are holding this year, where the real message of Christmas can be heard, at different times in different places, with something to suit all ages. My prayer is that you will know the love and peace of Christ this Christmas and always.

BE HOME SMART
OVEN WIZARDS Sarah Meredith has started her own oven cleaning business as part of the Oven Wizards franchise. Sarah has lived in the local area all of her life and as she knows the area well, she believes there will be a strong demand for her services.
Be Home Smart has been created by local businessman Daniel Harrington, to provide home owners with the confidence of a team of independent, approved and qualified tradespeople whose focus is to provide quality workmanship at reasonable prices.
Sarah says, “I was looking for a business idea that would be something I would enjoy doing and that would provide a great service to local people. I came across the idea of an oven cleaning business and then started to research the market. I soon realised that becoming an oven wizard offered me a great opportunity particularly with the support of the successful franchise brand.' ‘I feel that being female gives me an added edge in the industry, particularly for those customers that may feel more vulnerable in letting people in their homes.' 'I’m not one to shy away from hard work and have a great eye for detail, meaning that your oven, hob and extractor are left in the cleanest condition possible.'
Be Home Smart is very selective about who it promotes, with every tradesperson being reviewed consistently on each job they complete however this solution differs from similar ones you may have heard about, as none of the tradespeople pay to be part of the business. This method ensures that only those that the business thinks delivers consistent quality at great prices are approved - rather than offering work to companies because they pay a subscription to join.
Lorraine Clark from Hampton Gazette, offers her feedback….. When Sarah contacted me about advertising in the Gazette it was perfect timing as my oven was desperate for a clean, every time I opened the door it scared me! I honestly couldn’t believe the difference afterwards, I had a new oven! Sarah was quick, clean and very professional and I wouldn’t hesitate in recommending her to anyone. Give Sarah at Oven Wizards Peterborough a call now to discuss your requirements. Tel 01733 568221/ 07710735094 or email on sarahmeredith@ovenwizards.com
We clean your oven...
“Having started Be Trade Smart last year, it was clear very soon that whilst customers were able to secure great savings on home improvements, they wanted to have the added comfort of approved trades,” said Mr Harrington. “Be Home Smart is the natural extension to this, and now we not only offer the best prices on home improvement materials on the market, but we also have high quality craftsmanship to implement the ideas of our customers.” Whether the job is as simple as replacing a washer on a dripping tap, through to an entire house renovation, Be Home Smart can provide independent, approved, quality businesses along with market-leading prices and really turn dreams into reality for our customers. We are based in Hampton and serve all areas of the UK through our wide network of trade and merchant partners. E: daniel@betradesmart.co.uk M: 07525030524 www.behomesmart.co.uk

Stay Merry
not miserable in the run up to Christmas ‘Tis the season to be jolly – but as we prepare for the season of goodwill, not everyone shares the Christmas spirit.
With many of us starting the Christmas shopping earlier, there is a fair chance that many of our shop purchases and online orders are beginning to pile up. So, with gifts galore adding to the decorations, tree, food and drink - December is a time when many of us let our guard down, amid the excitement leading up to the big day. For opportunist thieves, visible presents under the tree, open car boots full of shopping, the possibility of an unlocked garage, or parcels left behind bins are rich pickings which can turn your Christmas from being merry into miserable!
staysafe
stay safe
By Eileen Le Voi, Safe Local Trades & Service
Pick pockets and purse dippers will also be out in force, whilst we are out shopping for gifts. Remember, pickpockets are very skilled at what they do, are extremely light-fingered and most of their thefts only take a second or two. And let’s not forget the increasing number of online scams – with retail fraudsters using the festive season as prime crime time. Equally, flaws in home security while out visiting friends and family are a beacon to thieves – so always remember to check your alarm and never leave doors, windows or garages unlocked.
Some tips for a safe and happy festive season: T Don’t leave presents in full view – either in the home or in the back seat of the car. T Shorter days mean longer time for thieves to be in operation – always lock your car and front door when entering your home. T Keep a light on indoors and outdoors if you are out visiting friends or family. T It may be an idea to fit some motion detector security lighting – it won’t just be carol singers who come calling. T If you are expecting parcels or deliveries whilst you are away from home, try and arrange for them to be delivered to an alternative address instead of them being hidden by the bins! T If buying bikes and / or electronic equipment for Christmas – mark them with your postcode. T If using outdoor festive lighting, ensure cables aren’t passed through windows, leaving enough gap for burglars to make use of. T Away over Christmas – plan ahead. If you’re going away arrange for a neighbour to park on the driveway to help create the impression someone is home. Do not post your plans on social media.
And when it comes to shopping:
DO keep purses and bags closed and secure at all times DO conceal your wallet in a buttoned or zipped pocket where it doesn’t bulge DO carry bags in front of you or diagonally across your chest DO return cards to your purse or wallet quickly and zip it up or button it DO use a money belt if you’re carrying a significant quantity of cash DO keep your valuables out of sight DO keep a list, separate from your wallet and phone, of contact numbers of family in case your phone is stolen
DO NOT place your mobile phone or wallet in your back pocket DO NOT hang your bag or any items on the back of a chair DO NOTleave anything on the back of a pushchair DO NOT place your belongings out of sight on the floor including shopping bags DO NOT show your money - keep it safely in your pocket and when using the ATM, always ensure that your money has been secured in your purse or wallet before turning away. For any home security improvements, we have locksmiths, alarm and CCTV installers, electricians and many other traders who can help. Visit www.safelocaltrades.com or call 0800 014 1832.

cookwise The Chalkboard (at The Key Theatre) is independently owned and run by Hannah and Andy, who are fulfilling their dream of opening their own Tea Room and Bistro. At The Chalkboard we serve delicious breakfasts until 12pm in the week and until 5pm at the weekends. From 5pm we serve our pre-theatre menu. The restaurant closes at 8pm in the week and 10pm on Fridays and Saturdays. After these hours we can cater for private events, so please get in touch. We serve our Chalkboards, which range from the Vegan Chalkboard and British Chalkboard to our wellloved Cheese Chalkboard served from 12pm daily which are proving popular with a glass of wine by the river. We are the home of ‘pick your own' afternoon tea which gives our customers a wide range of choice
from type of bread and sandwich filling to type of scone, and a large section of cake and savoury options. We have a wide range of choice for vegans or people following a gluten free diet. We also have a lighter bites menu if you wanted just a slice of cake and a coffee, or our mini afternoon tea with a sandwich, crisps, cake and a hot drink. The children’s afternoon tea is popular with its choice of sandwich shape, served with a cookie, rainbow cake, marshmallows and candy floss! Our Baby Showers are a lovely way to celebrate the upcoming arrival with friends over afternoon tea. The views from the restaurant are stunning!
We we want The Chalkboard to be a place where people can come and relax with friends and family, whether they are visiting the theatre or not. All the tables in the restaurant have a river view and it is even pretty when raining.

Soak the fruit overnight in the orange juice. Mix the flour and salt, the yeast and the milk in a mixer with a dough hook. You can do it by hand, it just takes longer. Gradually mix in two beaten eggs and the vanilla. Knead until the dough is smooth and springy. Leave in a bowl, covered with a damp cloth and allow to rise until doubled in size. Add the sugar, butter and the yolk from the remaining egg. Mix again, either with the machine, or by hand, until the dough is smooth again. Add the fruit and zest and knead quickly until it’s all incorporated into the dough. Leave in a bowl, covered with a damp cloth, in a cool place for at least
two hours until doubled in size again. You can leave it in the fridge overnight if you prefer. Line a large, six-holed muffin tray with paper cases. Divide the dough into six portions and roll into balls. Place one ball into each muffin case, cover with a damp cloth and leave for 20 minutes. Heat the oven to 180C / 160 fan or Gas mark 4. Brush the tops of the panettones with the remaining egg whites and dust with caster sugar. Bake for 15-20 minutes until the muffins have risen and are golden in colour. Leave to cool on a wire rack.
Variation - Add some brandy to the overnight soak in orange juice for a little extra kick.

I realised the other day that our garden has everything we need for Christmas: holly, ivy and a robin!
nature watch

Lakota (Lover of Nature)
The holly and the ivy, When they are both full grown, Of all the trees that are in the wood, The holly bears the crown.
All three have been associated with Christmas for a very long time. The holly is known as Christdorn in German, meaning Christ thorn. The holly’s pointed leaves symbolise the crown of thorns placed on Jesus’s head before he died on the cross and the red berries drops of his blood. In legend it is said that the berries were originally white but Christ’s blood, shed for mankind, turned them red. There are other legends connecting holly to Jesus: one says that Jesus’s cross was made of wood from the holly, and another that holly sprang up from his footsteps. For centuries holly has been used to decorate homes at Christmas.
Ivy too has a long tradition of being brought into the house during the Christmas period. Ivy has to cling to something else in order to support itself as it grows. For Christians this reminds them that they need to cling to God for support in their lives. A more pagan belief was for farmers to give their cows a spring of ivy before twelve o’clock on Christmas Day in the belief that this would fend off the devil until Christmas came round again, twelve months later. Ivy has also been used, along with holly, in Christmas wreaths; adorning front doors over the season. Lastly, the robin, which also has associations with Jesus. One fable
tells of a robin shielding the baby Jesus from the stable fire which had become too bright and hot for the new born infant. A brown robin placed himself between the fire and baby Jesus’s face. He fluffed out his feathers to protect Jesus but in doing so his breast was scorched by the fire. This redness was then passed on through the generations. Much later, from the Victorian period onwards, robins became a favourite for Christmas cards. This is thought to be due to the fact that originally postmen wore red jackets and became known as ‘robins’: postmen delivered Christmas cards and thus the tradition was born.

December is that time of year when traditionally we expect little or no insect interactions.

Of course, it is traditionally the time of year to see winter gnats flying in the morning mists or snow fleas in the proverbial snow but most other bug life tends to be hidden. Lift a rotting log and you may find sheltering woodlice, slugs, centipedes and beetles. Find a sheltered corner and likely there will be a horde of hibernating snail, their shells closed off with a dried membrane. Certainly that was December of yesteryear and the expected landscape. Today though, it is often different, as generally temperatures have risen, so bug activity is greatly increased, with bees often seen on the wing throughout a period that is normally devoid of them. This, of course, presents a real problem for these important bugs that would normally be deep in hibernation for not only is
it a time of year traditionally lacking bugs, it also traditionally lacks flowers, so food is scarce. It is important that we, as custodians of the land, do all we can to ensure that there is potentially some food about; choosing winter flowering species that are accessible to our pollinators is increasingly important. Sadly, the main default at garden centres for winter flowers are pansies, which are indeed showy but sadly provide no food as they self-pollinate. Intrepid dandelions have started flowering during this period so spare the weeds until the land is needed. Primroses and related primulas have also started flowering through the winter so make a good addition to the garden as do the nonnative shrubs. Winter jasmine and viburnum tinus also make great additions and rosemary will bring late winter flowers.

money matters
moneymatters The importance of pensions Pension sharing in divorce is a hot topic currently for family law practitioners. A comprehensive report was issued by the Pension Advisory Group in July this year, entitled 'A Guide to the Treatment of Pensions on Divorce', if anyone out there has a spare few hours to peruse it. Levity aside, it is an essential work of reference for the jobbing divorce solicitor, for whom pension sharing can be a minefield of potential negligence claims if care is not taken. Most problems arise in respect of offsetting, as it is known. This is where in a divorce one party chooses to keep the larger share of the capital assets, usually the matrimonial home, in return for
agreeing not to share the husband’s pension fund. If this pension has any complexities about it, the stated transfer value could be very much an under value and therefore not a fair swap for the house at all. Even a signed disclaimer recording that advice to take a pension share was rejected, is not always sufficient to protect a solicitor, if the divorcing spouse did not realise the true value of the pension asset she was relinquishing. Pension assets can be the most valuable asset in a marriage. Do not under estimate them and if you have any doubts about this complex subject, consult a family law solicitor.
Money Matters by Pete Bird, Bird & Co, Certified Public Accountants
WHO HAS A WILL? A case was recently reported in the Financial Times of two stepsisters who were arguing over which of them should inherit their late parents' house. The elderly couple had been found dead in their home, and it was not possible to determine who had died first. The situation was complicated because the father had not made a will and his younger wife had made no provision in her will for her step-daughter. If the wife was deemed to have died first her share in the home would pass to her husband. Under the intestacy rules his estate would pass only to his daughter and not to his wife's daughter. If the husband died first, the wife would inherit the property and it then would pass only to her own daughter under her will. The court decided that the Law of Property Act 1925 should apply, which determines that the elder of the two is deemed to have died first. The wife's daughter thus inherited the entire property to the exclusion of her stepsister. It is important to have an up-to-date will not only for IHT planning but also to prevent family disputes as described above. Perhaps you can use this shocking news story as time to check your own wills are correct and up to date and to think about the division of your assets after death. If you want to take advantage of the 36% rate of IHT by leaving at least 10% of their net estate to charities then their will should include express provision for those gifts. (Rebecca Cave writing in TAXline October 2019)

Hampton Mini Movers
young gazette
younggazette It’s hard to believe that Christmas is just a few weeks away! We know that many of our Mini Movers will be writing their present lists to Santa. Our last Mini Movers of this year will be Monday 16 December. We have a few more sessions to go until then, so please come along and join us for the last few weeks of term. If you don’t know by now, Mini Movers is a drop in, stay and play session for children from newborn to Reception age. We meet from 1.15pm till 2.45pm on Mondays (term-time only) at the Hampton Vale Community Centre. It’s just £1 per family which includes refreshments for the children and adults. We have plenty of toys, play dough and craft items as well. We have space for pushchairs inside and there is always a welcoming smile for you all!
Hampton Vale School What have the Reception pupils at Hampton Vale been up to? Our Reception pupils have had a wonderful start to the academic year. The children began their topic, based upon the United Kingdom, by learning all about London through the Paddington Bear story. The pupils created their own set of spoken instructions about how to make marmalade sandwiches for Paddington Bear, which he thoroughly enjoyed eating! They have also been taking part in our new curriculum offer, which includes weekly Forest School, Performing Arts, Music, P.E. and Art lessons. Forest School sessions have included creating art in nature, making wands, bug hunting and searching for natural treasure. Another highlight from this term was our 'Bedtime Story' event before half-term where
pupils were invited to bring in their pyjamas and blankets to enjoy classic stories being read to them by different teachers. Over the summer holidays we have invested heavily in modernising our Reception classrooms by extending and renovating them. We have been working with the talented team at Street Arts Hire to create artwork for our individual book corners, as well as classroom murals. Over the course of the next few months we are going to be transforming our EYFS garden and are excited to be building our very own 'Hampton Village' which will have a range of role play buildings; such as a garden centre, veterinary surgery, fire station, cafe and construction zone. The village will also have a park area and our very own beach too!
The sessions are run by volunteers from KingsGate Community Church. Contact Rachael 07983 421139, search Hampton Mini Movers on Facebook or just pop along on a Monday, we’d love to see you! We would also like to take the opportunity to wish you and your family a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. Our first date back in the New Year will be Monday 6 January.
If you have a child due to start Reception in September 2020 and you would like to arrange a tour please contact the school office on 01733 247000.

Hampton College The recent Hampton Sixth Form Open Evening was a highly successful evening, with an extensive mix of current Year 11 students and interested external students from across the city coming to view the opportunities and facilities offered to them within the Trust. Further details on the selection of courses offered and entry requirements can be obtained via our website, along with details of how to apply for our Sixth Form. Applications close on 10 January. Our students have been very busy within schools this month, with several extra-curricular projects being offered to students. Science are running a STEM after school club. Modern Foreign Languages have organised a Language Leaders Award and the ICT Department are participating in the IDEA award for computer technology. Students will be offered the chance to complete a series of online challenges to achieve Bronze, Silver and Gold badges. To date, three of our students have received their Bronze Award from Buckingham Palace. Children across Hampton will be joining together once more for the annual Arts and Carol Concert on 17th December. Students from the secondary and primary phases of the College, Hampton Vale and Hampton Hargate schools will join for what promises to be a wonderful evening of festive songs and carols. Tickets are available from all the participating schools. We hope to see you at what promises to be another wonderful evening of music. Later this month, students will be finalising their entries for the House Christmas Hamper Challenge. Last year’s entries were excellent and saw a range of artistic flair from the students, all whilst raising vital supplies for the Hampton Foodbank. Students will also be enjoying being served lunch by staff later this month, with the festive Christmas Lunch. There will be a traditional Christmas dinner along with crackers and mince pies and pudding. Students will be waited on by staff and tickets are now available to purchase on Wisepay. Continuing our festive preparations, students will also be able to help fundraiser for an extremely good cause. On Friday 13 December, students will be able to wear a Christmas jumper for a donation towards Save the Children, as we participate in the national Christmas Jumper Day.

Hampton College Primary We’ve had a very busy autumn term at Hampton College Primary. Our Year 4 pupils have contacted two scientists via Skype! Firstly, they spoke with Samuel Abalde who is a marine biologist from Spain and specialises in cone snails. They then spoke with Maria Rogers, who is another marine biologist, from Mississippi in America, who specialises in sea turtles and oil pollution! They asked many tricky questions, such as: 'How do animals eat jellyfish and not get stung?' 'How many sea creatures are there in the ocean?' And 'Why did you become a scientist?" It was an amazing experience! Our Year 1 pupils have had a fabulous time on woodland walks. We explored the woodland and looked to see what they could find. The children collected sticks, leaves and other treasures that they found and were very excited about transforming them into woodland artwork. Do you have a young child at home? At Hampton College we believe in the power of stories and would like to welcome young children and their grown-ups to develop a love of reading before they start school, as well as starting to build the relationship with adults from our reception setting. We have recently started sessions every Monday during term-time, between 9-9.45 am in the Hampton Library to promote early reading and literacy. Come and join us for a session of stories, activities and singing; we look forward to seeing you there.
Little Acorns Day Nursery and Montessori School
The children have been celebrating Diwali, they have made lanterns, tea light holders and the babies have enjoyed exploring a Diwali themed sensory activity. The preschool have also been to visit St Peter's Church, Thank you for showing the children around. The build up to Christmas is always a very exciting time; the children are enjoying Christmas crafts, singing Christmas songs and talking lots about Santa coming soon! The preschool children have been practicing their Christmas songs ready to perform in front of their families for the annual Christmas concert. We would like to wish all of our families a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. Thank you for all of your support over the past year and we look forward to seeing you and welcoming all our new families in the new year. The Ark During November, The Ark was busy learning about the weather as we sang songs about the rain, created a range of weather collages whilst also remembering to wrap up warmly. Our story time reminded us how God is always with us, come rain or shine.
30 Years Young Everyone came into school for the day dressed as if it was the 1980s – from Baywatch to Ghostbusters, the outfits looked fantastic! I am not sure that the school has ever before encouraged so many neon clothes and crimped hair on one day! It was also terrific to see one of the original school jumpers being worn, from when the building first opened. In our dedicated assembly we looked at photos and plans of when the

On 6 November 1989, our current school building was formally opened, marking a new chapter for Folksworth village. To celebrate this milestone, on 6 November this year we had a 30th Birthday Party for the school, and the children got to experience life in the 80s!
school was being built, and tried to recognise people from the first school photos. Over lunch, we played music from the 1980s and watched TV programmes which would have been shown at the time. It was a very nostalgic day for everyone associated with our school, and it made us think about where we might be, and what life might be like, in another 30 years...
Our Autumn Programme is now gearing up for Christmas which, as we all know, is fast approaching. We can’t wait to start making those angels who proclaimed the Christmas message! You can be certain of some hearty singing at the end of each session throughout December. Of course, there will still be all our regular activities and toys, not forgetting refreshments for everyone. So, if you haven’t been to The Ark before, why not come and
join us during December; we are always pleased to see new faces. Parents, grandparents and carers don’t need to book - just turn up at 10am on Thursday at CSK Church. The session finishes at 11.15am. We cater for all pre-school aged children and have a dedicated area for babies and their parents/carers. We would love to meet you. Look out for CSK’s Christmas advert in this edition of the Gazette. Christmas Crafts, Christingle … something for everyone!

Triumph for Casey Stone Hampton Vale resident Casey Stone recently returned from representing Team England at the 2019 ISKA World championships winning silver and bronze medals in Freestyle Musical Weapons and Freestyle Musical Open Hand Katas. We are all very proud of Casey; not only was it an amazing feat to qualify for an event that saw over twenty countries battle it out for the top spots in various disciplines, but Casey had to overcome some personal hurdles in the run up to this. In July, a tendon injury put Casey out of action. She had to wear an Air Boot and her participation looked unlikely, however she faced her rehabilitation programme, with true grit and determination. This hard work paid off and Casey was declared fit to compete. If this wasn’t enough, six days before she was due to leave for this competition, Casey and her family found themselves victims of a house fire which has left them unable to stay in their home.
Casey trains at Hicks Karate School of Excellence under the guidance of Sensei Hicks and Atlanta Hickman who won two World Titles at the same event. Here’s what chief instructor Andrew Hicks had to say. ‘Casey favours Katas and Kata competitions, which locally are few and far between, but this doesn’t stop her and she will attend every competition for experience in a competitive setting. Putting in a lot of work and private hours to perfect her technique, Casey shows her love for her skill and art with every event. A silver and bronze for Freestyle Weapons and Open Hand is a huge achievement at world level.’ The incidents in the run up to this event would have brought some adults to their knees, but at only 14 years old the spirit Casey showed has proved that with true determination dreams can be achieved.
