Winter health advice at Hampton Pharmacy With the onset of winter many of us succumb to the usual round of ailments and worries but instead of visiting your GP your local pharmacist could help. Whether it’s beating colds and flu, dealing with additional pounds gained as you hibernate away our pharmacist can run through a check list to make sure you’ve got everything covered to keep you and your family healthy this winter.
Beating coughs and colds Coughs and colds are more common in the winter months, so stock up your medicine chest ready for this season’s sniffles. Ibrar (Hamptons Pharmacist) advises: “Painkillers, decongestants and cough mixtures are good for adults and don’t forget liquid paracetmol for children. Before taking a combination of products it is important to check the paracetmol, aspirin and ibuprofen amounts as well as other active ingredients to prevent overdosing.
Ibrar says: “Having the vaccination each year will significantly reduce your chance of getting flu. It works by stimulating the first wave of your body’s natural defences and creates antibodies that will help defend your body from the strain of flu virus.”
Piling on the pounds The shorter days of autumn and winter affect our internal body clock that tells us when we feel tired, when we wake up and when we feel hungry. “Research has shown that a lack of daylight causes an increase in appetite, so make sure you indulge those cravings with healthier foods because it is often easy to reach for stodgy carbs when it’s cold and wet outside.” Hifza (our dispenser) at Hampton Pharmacy offers weight management programmes including Lipotrim with regular weigh-ins and body mass index calculations along with diet and exercise advice.
“Out of date medicines may not be effective so make sure you check use-by dates at the beginning of the season and stock up accordingly. “People who smoke are more likely to catch colds and suffer worse symptoms. Paula our quit smoking adviser can also offer free advice and support on kicking the habit.”
Fighting flu Flu is seriously disruptive and usually banishes sufferers to bed for three to five days. If you don’t have time to suffer this winter then a flu vaccination is the most effective way of preventing its onset.
How you can stay healthy this winter 1. Never use antibiotics for a cold or the flu. They don’t work! 2. Never share or take leftover antibiotics. 3. Finish your antibiotic prescription even if you start to feel better. 4. Wash your hands often to prevent the spread of germs. 5. Talk to your pharmacist of doctor about using antibiotics the right way.
Are you a carer? People don’t often think of themselves as carers when they are helping relatives or friends, which is why there are a lot of ‘hidden carers’ that your GP surgery may not know about. If you spend a significant proportion of your time caring for a relative, partner or friend who is ill, frail, disabled or has mental health or substance misuse problems then you probably are a carer. If somebody is relying on you to help then then it is really important that you look after your own health and wellbeing and know where to go if you need support. Hampton Health is participating in a Family Carers Prescription scheme and can write a free prescription to Carers Trust Cambridgeshire, a local Carers Service, who will support you in getting the information you need, assist you with making plans and, if you need it, design your personalised break so you can rest and think. If you think you are a carer please let us know so we can document this on your records and provide you with useful information. If you would be interested in a prescription please talk to one of our nurses, or Health Care Assistants or ask for a telephone appointment with a GP to briefly explain your circumstances. The service is also designed to respond quickly to urgent need so Carers Trust Cambridgeshire will get back to you quickly to discuss appropriate support. You can also find out more information by visiting their website www.carerstrustcambridgeshire.org

Hampton News by Kate Day, Parish Clerk E: hamptonparishcouncil@gmail.com T: 01733 306160 Facebook: Hampton Parish Council
2014 is a very important year for Hampton Parish Council as this is our election year. Parish Councillors are elected for a term of four years, retiring together on the fourth day after the date of the elections when the newly elected councillors (who may include re-elected councillors) come in to office. When the Parish Council was established in 2010 there were insufficient people standing to become a councillor so all five of the candidates standing for election were automatically elected, with four of the original five, Councillors Amps, Brett, Jones and Patel still in office four years later. The remaining ten councillors have been co-opted onto the Council since the first Hampton Parish Council meeting in July 2010. It may seem that this year’s elections, to be held on 22 May 2014 are a long way off, but as the election process commences on 14 April 2014 with the publication of the notice of election giving prospective councillors until just 24 April 2014 to submit their nomination papers. As this is a legally defined process there is no leeway with this date. It would be good for Hampton to have the benefit of a democratically elected Parish Council but this will only happen if there are
at least 14 candidates standing for election. If there are less than 14 qualifying candidates those standing will be automatically elected without residents having to vote on who they want to run Hampton for the next four years with the remaining vacancies filled by co-option at the discretion of the elected councillors. Serving your community is not an onerous task, there is normally just one evening meeting per month (currently the first Thursday in each month) with the option to get more involved through election to the Finance and General Purposes Committee and getting involved with the Working Groups and Sub Committees who deal with one-off projects such as the Hampton Skate Park and the War Memorial Project. This is your chance to be part of the driving force in our community by standing for election so please take this opportunity to check out the Parish website for details of the qualifications necessary to be a local councillor or contact me for an informal chat about the process. I look forward to hearing from you!

Reader’sLetter Peterborough is a very windy city, but the recent gale force winds have meant all the Hampton windchimes, flags, metal flagpoles and their fixings and cables have become an even more major source of nuisance and annoyance to residents. Residents should check whether such garden features cause nuisance to their neighbours. Residents leave themselves open to IPNA Court Orders (Injunctions to Prevent Nuisance and Annoyance). Close communities only work when residents are considerate.....we all want Hampton to be a harmonious community. A concerned resident.

A warm welcome to Luke! Hi, my name is Luke Chillingsworth and am a 16 year old studying A Levels at Hampton College. My interest in Journalism as a future career choice has led me to the Hampton Gazette which is a fantastic opportunity for me personally. I would like to take this opportunity to thank Lorraine Clark for giving me this chance, as well as to some of you who supported me through this process. My hobbies centre around my love of motorsport, I am a Trainee Marshall for the Motor Sports Association of Great Britain and attend events regularly. I am also the presenter of Hampton College’s weekly radio show which many of you or your children have heard in the past. I have also been part of Hampton’s Cubs and Scout groups in the past, winning the top award, the Scouts Gold Award. I have also recently won the award for excellence in my house at Hampton College showing my determination which I will follow through with my work at the gazette. During my time at the gazette, I will strive to dig deeper into the stories you want to know, from the frequently discussed parking problems to the boarded up shops, I will dig deeper than before in order to bring you the answers to these burning questions. I will also be here as a centrepiece for the younger generation of Hampton, aiming to bring you as a teenager or parent closer to your community with the wide range of activities on offer. Again thank you very much for your support, I look forward massively to meeting and working with lots of you over the coming months
Your valentine will love you for this… Well done guys, you got the flowers, the chocolates and of course the perfect valentine card, but didn’t you do all that last year?

Larrington Life Coaching goes ‘Cambridge’! As you probably already know, the role of a Personal Life Coach is to help their client identify and achieve their goals. One goal that is very important to many people at this time of year is their weight loss goal. As an experienced weight loss and management coach / counsellor of eleven years, Julie Larrington has now trained as an Independent Consultant for the Cambridge Weight Plan. Cambridge offers fast, flexible and affordable weight loss programmes tailored to the needs of the individual client. With the personal one to one approach, clients feel valued and understood without having to attend groups. Should the client wish to explore their eating behaviours and relationship with food in greater depth then of course Julie is able to offer this.
The challenges of a traditional calorie controlled diet are these:1. The weight loss is slow and the client can become disillusioned and demotivated before they reach their goal. 2.
By reducing conventional food, it is likely that it will also be nutritionally deficient, therefore the client will be low in energy and hungry.
3. They are often complicated. By offering nutritionally complete meal replacements, Cambridge Weight Plan combats all of these issues. The weight loss is regular and rapid depending on which programme is chosen. The body is being properly fed so there is little or no hunger. The programmes are simple and easy to follow.

WIN
A MEAL FOR FOUR BY EXPLORING OUR HAMPTON MAP
A few weeks after going live, the new Hampton interactive map has already clocked up more than 100 pop-ups revealing what there is to do, see and enjoy around Hampton.
COMPETITION TIME! To celebrate this first century the Hampton Gazette and O&H Properties are giving readers the chance to explore the map for themselves – and win a £100 meal out at the popular Frankie and Benny’s Restaurant.
TO ENTER: All you need do is visit the interactive map at www.ohhampton.co.uk to find the answer to this simple question based on one of those first 100 entries:
Q: What type of wildlife are the volunteers in the film of Hampton Nature Reserve looking for?
Help put Hampton on the map
While you’re at it, why not explore some of the gems Hampton residents have already added to the map – and have a go at adding your own interest, business or favourite landmark? You’ll find a storehouse of information on clubs, groups, local services, businesses and things to do and see – with more being added all the time. As well as adding details of organisations and activities, the map allows you to include photos, video and weblinks. O&H Hampton General Manager Roger Tallowin explained: “The Hamptons are maturing into a sought-after place to live. Rather than build a traditional developer’s web site we think the best way to tell people why they might want to come here to live or do business is to let the people of the Hamptons speak for themselves.” “Now the interactive map is live we’re hoping as many people as possible will add the things that matter to them.”
Send your answer, together with your name, address and telephone number to info@ohhampton.co.uk putting ‘Competition’ in the title field.
The Nature Reserve film was one of the first features to appear along with film of the area’s Tuesday Walking Group, plus youngsters at Hampton Hargate school enjoying the school’s ‘Airport Day’. Added Roger: “The website and map are not only for those thinking of living or moving their home or business here. We very much hope the map will prove an invaluable resource for the rest of Peterborough and the region. The Hamptons are a vibrant area with a strong sense of community and a lot going on - and the map really reflects that.”
Closing date is 28th February 2014. The winner will be chosen at random from the correct entries. Full competition details can be found in the news section of the O&H Hampton website.
Visitors to www.ohhampton.co.uk can also use the site to discover the story of the Hamptons, discover its facilities and open spaces, find out where new homes are for sale, and learn more about future plans for the area.

Bloodshed in court! This doesn’t often happen in the literal sense, but some divorcing husbands and wives seem to have feelings strong enough to want to draw blood from each other, which family law solicitors have to try and manage during the course of a case. A retiring Judge, Sir Paul Coleridge, told a family law conference in London at the end of last year, that lawyers should take the lead in developing more innovative and daring alternatives to the “bloodshed, time and cost of court”. Sir Paul also called for an overhaul of outdated divorce law (unchanged for 40 years) which is not going to happen any time soon. What is available to improve the divorce experience however, is alternative dispute resolution such as mediation, which couples undertake as a more cost-effective way of negotiating arrangements in the presence of a third party (who is not a legal adviser) for the children and financial settlements. Or there is the collaborative law option which does involve a family lawyer on both sides, but in a four-way process which commits to avoiding court proceedings and achieving a consensual outcome at the end of the day. This prioritises the welfare of the children and lays the foundation for a civilized relationship between the divorcing parties for the long term future. The learned Judge referred to even the most intractable and difficult cases being capable of resolution in a more “sophisticated and modern way” avoiding “the days of gladiatorial wars of titans”. He remarked that “we cannot wait for the courts to get round to moving into a more streamlined and user friendly environment”. You can avoid court altogether with collaborative law. If you would like more information about this option, please visit the local collaborative law website at www.pcflg.co.uk or ring us for more details. Belinda Smith and her associate Michele Fielding are trained collaborative lawyers and members of the local group based in Peterborough. Visit www.pcflg.co.uk for details of all the qualified collaborative lawyers in the area and ring Belinda on 01733 267414 if you would like more information. Buy a Brick Campaign
Buy a Brick Campaigns revive the way that village halls, etc were built in the past: through individuals giving freely to their community.
Construction of the new church community building has started, next to the Police Station and opposite Tesco’s rear entrance. The Diocese of Ely has given £1 million towards the total building cost but we have to raise the rest of the funding needed. This amounts to £650 000. The building will meet a real need in Hampton, where everyone will be welcome, whether to meet as a group or as individuals. The café will provide a focal point to chat with friends or to find friendship.

Hampton News Christ the Servant King, the Parish Church of Hampton What’s love got to do with it?’ go the words of the Tina Turner song. Maybe nothing, as far as some of the joke Valentines Day cards go.
New Church building nears completion If all goes to the plan, the structure of the new CSK Church Building should be completed by the end of April 2014. As well as a chapel and large worship area that will seat 250 people, there will be a café with crèche area, an additional spacious hall that will seat up to 150, two additional meeting
Legend has it that the first official Valentine’s Day was declared on the 14th of February by Pope Galasius in 496, in memory of St. Valentine, who was martyred for refusing to give up Christianity in 269 AD. Gradually, February 14th became the date for exchanging love messages and St. Valentine became the patron saint of lovers. Whether you think that Valentine’s Day is a commercial enterprise and a total waste of money, or whether you’re secretly hoping to receive a card or gift, we all want to be loved. God is love, and to show his love and reach out to us, Jesus left the glories of heaven, and came to earth for us. And He wants to spend eternity with us. Some words from the Bible: ‘‘For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life.” So this Valentines Day, why not make a choice to receive the best gift ever, and accept God’s love, as He is willing to forgive us and love us forever when we turn to Him. Happy Valentine’s Day.
Every Blessing,Sylvia

rooms, office, kitchen, and toilets. The building will be open to the entire community, and CSK want this to be a place where all people feel welcomed and included. We’ve had fantastic support for the project. We have already raised £100,000 towards the £165,000 needed to fit the building out with chairs, multi-media and sound system, cafe area, office etc. We are very grateful to WREN, a not for profit business that awards grants to community projects from funds donated by FCC to the Landfill Communities Fund, for their £50,000 grant to us. We would also like to thank local schools and individuals who have
supported our fund raising efforts. Our small committed fund-raising team are continuing to work hard to bring in the final finances to enable all our plans, and would love to hear from any local businesses who might like to invest in this community project. We look forward to having a building from which we can meet social and spiritual needs, where we celebrate the highs of life together and provide support through the lows. Anyone and everyone, all ages, will be welcome here. Local uniformed organisations, a pre-school, drama group and ladies group have already expressed a desire to use the building. The official dedication and opening of the building will take place on September 8th 2014 at 7:30pm. Once the building is fully fitted out, we hope to be able to run various courses to serve the community such as Parenting Courses, and to be a distribution centre for the City’s food bank.

Windows XP ending in April Well it had to happen eventually, after 13 years Microsoft are stopping support for Windows XP in April so what does this mean for Windows XP users? Will my computer stop working? No, your computer will still work but you won’t receive any patches or updates for known issues. This means that you will be left with a computer fully working but potentially very vulnerable to new virus and malware issues if any loopholes were to be found in the operating system that could be taken advantage of by those nasty virus writers out there! What should I do? Now is a good time to consider upgrading your computer. You have
time to plan, there is no rush and you can ensure that your system is checked to ensure you have enough RAM memory, hard drive space and a fast enough processor to cope with a new operating system. Checking on software compatibility with Windows 7 or Windows 8 is also essential before upgrading! Computer man offers a free service to check your computer in preparation for an upgrade and I can help with advice on whether to upgrade or replace.

Schoffileds quality dry cleaning is based in Orton Marlborne . As well as a launderette with self-service or services washes, they offer repairs, alterations, a brilliant tailoring service, Wedding dresses, curtain cleaning, Quilts, shoe repair and a great delivery and collection service. Schoffields is a family owned business where every member of staff is personally trained to do an exceptional job. High quality work and fantastic customer service are the foundation of schoffields and the reason they have been in business for so long. Schoffields was originally based at the Orton Centre and after 24 years moved to Herlington 6 years ago. Proprietor Angela Holmes was presented with her SED (Solvent emissions directive) by the major and the president of the Guild of cleaners and laundrette at the opening at her new premises. Also in attendance was the local chairman of federation of small business (FSB)
SJT Decorating – call the pro that’s in the know… We all like to think we can wield a brush or roller when it comes to decorating, but if you want a truly professional finish in Hampton, there’s only one place to go – SJT Decorating. Stuart Tod has been a professionally-trained decorator since he was 16 and in the last 30 years he’s done it all. He says: “I’ve been doing this all my life and have run SJT for the last 15 years, so we are well-respected. We cover all kinds of work – both private and commercial. No job is too big or too small. That may be a cliché, but we can do single rooms, whole houses, or whole offices in corporate colours, like we’ve recently completed at Lynch Wood. We cover the whole of Peterborough and further afield, although as I’m based in Hampton we feel we are the local choice for the area.” As well private, commercial and insurance work being undertaken, his 29 years in the trade means Stuart has access to a wide-range of other subcontractors such as builders, carpenters and electricians so SJT Decorating can be a one-stop-shop for your general building work and decorating needs.
Angela is very proud that some of her customers have been with her for 30 years and looks forward to welcoming many more customers from the Hamptons. Angela loves dealing with people and clothes and the feel of materials is second nature to her Angela is very passionate in all that she does and is very grateful for the loyalty and support she has received over the past 30 years.
Stuart also keeps abreast of the latest advances in paint. He says: “Back in the day your choice was limited, but today you have a wide-range of hardwearing paints in a variety of finishes which are scratch proof and can be washed. You even have water-based gloss, where you have the advantages of the old oil-based paints but with the benefits of being kinder to the environment. We all like to think we can decorate, but with nearly 30 years in the trade you will not be disappointed with a professional finish – and we can even mix paint to match your settee, should you so wish! We talk to the customer and give them what they want, so give us a call.”

Bargains galore everyday
Business Focus
at YOUR local Premier!
by Luke Chillingsworth
There is one shop in Hampton that regular gets overlooked, However, next time your around the Vale area and are in need of a loaf of bread, pint of milk or a good bargain, instead of diving straight for One Stop, look out for the shop just across the road. Premier, or Costcutter as it was formally known has not received the credit it should have had. One incredibly important reason why you should shop here is that this is a local independent store run by a local family and employing local people. Therefore it needs the support its not getting as it does not have any financial backup elsewhere if we do not support the business. The store is full of good quality and useful household essentials as well as a cheap brand Euroshopper within store, meaning a bottle of coke is only 35p. This is also backed up with new offers every four weeks. These offers are displayed in a prime location upon entering meaning you can save even more money on your daily shop. In a time where financial difficulties are unsettling everyone, these offers and prices seem like anyone’s paradise. The shop also has excellent customer service and no long queues which is handy for those needing to grab something before picking up the kids. Another nice feature for the store is the
ability to pay bills over the counter and receive free cashback on any purchases over £1.00. The local family are also willing to support local schools and community projects with an aim of being further involved within the community. If they are willing to help us, we should be helping them. Electronic Cigarettes are also now in store as well as the company expands even more to fulfil the needs of the modern society. The decision by the owner, Nash, to change from Costcutter to Premier was very positive indeed, this has allowed the firm to join a bigger supermarket
group, whilst being able to bring the people of Hampton much cheaper, and better quality goods. The company also looks firmly set for further expansion in the coming months. There is promise of a new cash machine being installed in April, as well as the sale of Slush Puppies for only 99p each come summertime. Definitely something to cool down in the sweltering summer heat. One things for sure, the small local company once overlooked by us, is soon to become a bustling store for the whole community to enjoy. I for one, look forward to seeing the store’s progress in the coming months, and the Slush Puppies.
Cost cutter has been rebranded as Premier. Allowing Supermarket deals for the people of Hampton. • Amazing Value Locally • Big Brands Big Deals
For many different reasons, you might be looking at the option of counselling to help you through a difficult time.
• Pay Bills • Small Queues • Family run business by a Hampton resident with all staff living in Hampton. • Fresh range of fruit and Veg, pies and pasties.
The practice is in a private, quiet and discreet location so offers a safe and confidential place to talk.

Now that the kids have grown up and left school we can take our holidays at any time of the year without any disruptions to their education. So we’ve just returned from a couple of weeks away from England’s winter, which although apparently not too horrendous wasn’t anywhere near as nice as the weather we enjoyed. On the long flight home I started to think about the wonders of technology and what we now take for granted. Without technology we wouldn’t have been able to make our journey in less than a day by flying at about 560mph together with more than 300 other people.

Then when we arrived at Heathrow it was all so easy to phone the car park and arrange for them to collect us and take us to our car. Less than 15 minutes after our luggage had arrived on the carousel we were in our car and heading for the M25. We knew which way to go because technology had provided us with guidance beamed down to the car from a collection of satellites orbiting the earth at about 20,000km. We were even told where the traffic was particularly heavy and given alternative routes.

I love all this technology (AKA boys toys!) and I’m still impressed by our clever car lights that illuminated the road on our way home from Heathrow. Our car’s Intelligent Lighting System automatically optimises visibility in a range of different situations, providing the best lighting from country roads to motorways. It’s so clever it adjusts the headlights’ high beam up and down depending on what other traffic is around so no more accidently blinding other motorists.

Of course, all this technology is only as good as the human involvement in its design, manufacture and use. But that’s improving all the time isn’t it. For instance it was nice to know that during our flight home from much hotter climes our house was being brought back up to a comfortable temperature. Just before we went away I was able to input the length of our holiday into our clever central heating thermostat and let technology determine when best to bring the house temperature up. The trouble is that human input (me) was faulty and the house was very cold when we arrived late last night! Non-technological dressing gowns were put to immediate use.

50 MASSAGES FOR CSK CHURCH HAVE A MASSAGE AND HELP FUNDRAISING! CSK – the local Hampton church - is getting a new building. It’s being built at the moment on Silver Hill, and much fundraising is going on to support the completion of this project.
This is Kristin’s fundraising idea: ‘I have 50 special gift vouchers offering a full hour NOHANDS Massage for just £12. All the money will go to the church. That means that if all 50 vouchers are used, £600 will be raised! I am hoping to raise this amount by Easter. These are all full hour treatments, at an absolute bargain price. I want to make sure that all these vouchers are distributed quickly to interested people, and that they are all used! I don’t want a single voucher forgotten about in a kitchen drawer, unused vouchers mean lost funds to the church, so if anyone gets a voucher which they will not use PLEASE PASS IT ON to someone who WILL use it!’
Kristin Mohn is a massage therapist based in Hampton Vale, known by many for her wonderful massages. She says: ‘ I see the new CSK church building as a great asset for the whole community in Hampton, as it will be offering meeting facilities to any organisation, group or club, and just by being there it adds to the many facilities that our community needs. It is great to see it being built after such a long wait! I have therefore decided to offer my massaging skills to help fundraise for the building.’
‘What a great way to start the new year with a health-bringing massage, and to support an important project at the same time! It could even be a lovely gift to somebody – remember Valentine’s Day and Mothers’ Day coming up soon…’
It looks like Kristin is going to have an extremely busy few months…
‘If you would like one of these very special vouchers please ring me on 01733 242547, or email me on info@kristinmohn.co.uk. Similarly, if you are in any club/organisation where you think some members may be interested, please contact me as soon as possible to get your vouchers!’

Schools Little Acorn Pre School
Hampton Vale Primary School
Little Acorns Day Nursery and Montessori School
Children at Hampton Vale Primary School are settling into their new learning spaces following the opening of a new classroom block. The six-room, two-storey block is now home to the Year Five and Year Six children, whose move has allowed the Year Four children to move from mobile classrooms into the main school building.
At Little Acorns day nursery we have been taking advantage of the bad weather by jumping and playing in the lovely big muddy puddles we have. The children have been having lots of fun exploring the different weather changes. Pre -school children have been looking at the gingerbread man story, and have been making their own gingerbread people. Throughout the month the children have looked at a range of stories such as Goldilocks, the Three Little Pigs and Peter Pan. The children have taken part in a range of activities such as making porridge, pig masks and many more. Linking with this theme a small group of our children visited the library for story time. Our toddler room have also been busy making and decorating biscuits, as well as planting and growing. Our baby room has welcomed new babies this month, and they are continuing to settle in well.
The new building, which can be seen to the left of the school’s main entrance, also houses offices and other learning spaces. Behind the building, the finishing touches are being put to a new outdoor learning area for the Foundation Stage pupils (the youngest children in the school). Using the new classrooms comes only a few weeks after an extension to the school hall was completed and after the school library was moved, refitted and restocked. Elsewhere in school, children have been making the most of their learning by taking part in a series of events, the aim of which is to engage and excite them about their learning. As part of their Fire! Fire! theme, the Year Two children

The children have been learning about other important festivals and celebrations, especially Chinese New Year. The children have enjoyed finding out about life in China and how Chinese New Year is celebrated, making Chinese lanterns and money wallets in our creative area and trying their hand at drawing mandarin symbols at the writing table. Our other topics have included Keeping healthy and Mathematics where the children have enjoyed engaging in small group time activities focused around Numbers, 2D and 3D Shapes and Size. In the Snack Shack the children have been preparing and eating a variety of different fruits and vegetables for their rolling snack bar and using tick charts to collect data about each other’s likes and dislikes about the healthy new foods they have been trying. If you would like any further information about Vale Community Pre-school and the provision we offer for children 3years and over please contact Nicole or Cheryl via our email: Valepre-school@hotmail.co.uk 30
Hampton College - Celebrating Success We held our GCSE and A level certificate and prize giving evening for the Year 11 and Year 13 classes of 2013 just before Christmas. It was a pleasure to see the ex-students, many of whom are now at university or in employment. It was our aim to make each student feel special and valued, as well as highlighting and celebrating some of the key achievements and contributions of specific students from those year groups. Many older schools have very established prize giving and celebration events for their leavers. We are keen to establish our own traditions, building on the event we staged this year. If you would like to support us by offering some sponsorship, or work for a company which might be interested in sponsoring a prize at future events, please contact Mrs Wojtowicz, the college’s Business Manager.
were able to see first-hand the impact of The Great Fire of London; they used cardboard boxes to build their own 17th century houses and ‘built’ them close together (as the original Great Fire houses were). They watched as the school’s site team set the buildings alight, prompting the children’s discussions about why the original fire spread so quickly and caused so much damage. Meanwhile, the Year Six children’s focus on the Second World War has seen them experience life as an evacuee; they have also written their own ghost stories that started with an artefact left for the children to discover. In Year Three, the current theme of The Romans saw the children set up their own museum, in which they displayed artefacts and the information texts about the subject that they had put together as part of their literacy learning.

Schools Hampton Hargate Primary School and the mystery of the missing bears… Our reception children were busy solving a mystery recently, when our resident bears Tom, Ted and Bob went missing suddenly one Friday. The trio of bears are a much loved addition to our reception classes and the children have enjoyed taking it in turns to take the bears home with them on a Friday afternoon to share in their weekend’s adventures. Imagine to their surprise then, when one very wet and windy Friday afternoon – Tom, Ted and Bob were nowhere to be found! The children had to go home that weekend without their furry little friends and spent all weekend wondering what could possibly have happened to Tom, Ted and Bob. They didn’t have to wait too long however, as an e-mail arrived from
Hampton College (Primary Phase)
the fearless trio the following Monday to let the children know that they were stuck in Scotland due to the floods! The children were then tasked with trying to find a way to rescue the bears and get them back home safely – a challenge to which they admirably rose up to. Imaginations were working overtime and the children had plenty of brilliant ideas. They built junk models of boats, cars and aeroplanes and drew detailed maps showing the bear’s location and what they were doing. Fortunately the wandering bears were able to find a hotel to stay in and were soon rescued by Miss Porter and returned to Hampton Hargate Primary safe and sound with a whole host of stories to tell! The children were so pleased to have the bears back that they threw them a welcome home party! Tom, Ted and Bob are now resting for a while but are looking forward to their next adventure… Pictured left - Ted back from his adventures

January was a very busy month for us at Hampton College. Our children returned from their Christmas break a little older, a little taller and very excited about the term ahead. We began the term by welcoming a German student, who spent a week with us in primary phase working in all four of our classrooms. She settled into extremely well and enjoyed her week of primary experience. The children also enjoyed spending time working with her and some children even learnt a little about Germany and the German language. We also welcomed some visitors from Africa, as part of the secondary phase Connecting Classrooms project. Our visitors came to spend a week at Hampton College and enjoyed visiting our primary phase children to explore what our youngest children are learning. As year one will be learning about Africa in the summer term, they were all very excited to have such a visit and had plenty of interesting questions ready.

This term our year one children have also been involved in the secondary phase, Theatre in Education project. This involved a group of year 10 students performing some short dramatic pieces to our year one audience on some contemporary themes such as friendship and the environment. Year one were a super audience and thoroughly enjoyed their visit to Hampton College to see this production. Our reception children have also had an exciting start to the term, with a real buzz of excitement and enjoyment in their classrooms as they embrace their new challenges and learning experiences over the coming weeks.

The Coot and the Moorhen I’ve been wondering recently why The Moorhen pub was so called when it’s so difficult to spot the actual bird itself. I’ve scanned the lakes but have only seen one moorhen. There may be others but they must be few in number. What is numerous, however, is the coot. They can be seen in great numbers, particularly on Serpentine Lake. Perhaps ‘The Moorhen’ rolls off the tongue rather more easily than ‘The Coot’!
Although superficially the coot and the moorhen look similar they can in fact be distinguished fairly easily. The coot is the larger of the two birds and has a white top to its head and a white beak. It is completely black unlike the moorhen. A favourite spot for coots on Hampton is the Tesco end of Serpentine Lake; a great many coots enjoy feeding on the weeds which are plentiful here. They also eat snails and insect larvae. Another difference between coots and moorhens is that coots have flaps of skin on their toes which act in a similar way to webbed feet, but I acknowledge that you would be unlikely to observe this considering the fact that coots spend most of their time on

the water. Moorhens do not have any form of webbed feet but just individual toes, rather like chickens. The moorhen can be recognised from its red beak and white markings at either side of the tail and on its sides. It is blackish in colour but notably smaller than the coot. Their diet is fairly similar to the coot but in addition they also eat seeds, fruit, grasses, insects, worms and small fish. You will need to look carefully to spot a moorhen on one of the Hampton lakes but this is a search definitely worth making, seeing as one of Hampton’s favourite meeting places is named after it.

We have had a wonderful start to our 2014 programme. January’s meeting was fantastic! We had local chef Zak Perrin, who has recently returned from working in France, talk to us about the history and origins of different breads plus he showed us how to make them too. We had the chance to taste them and had a go at making our own as well. It was just as well I skimped on my tea that night! Can I just add that it would have been just as enjoyable an evening even if the chef had not been quite so young and pleasing to the eye! I hope he wasn’t too terrified. He was in safe hands though because Mum is a member! Don’t forget, if you want to “Try Before You Buy” or give us a test drive to make sure we fit, we are now meeting at Hampton Children’s Centre, Hargate Way, Peterborough, Cambridgeshire PE7 8BZ Just follow the path that runs down between BusyBees Nursery and Hampton Hargate Primary School, going towards The Tump, and you will find it. Meetings begin at 7:00pm and any women, between the ages of 18 and infinity are most welcome!

Gardening
by Jim Green, Farcet Nurseries
February February is a month that can bring heavy snow and if it does it is a good idea to take a brush and gently brush the snow off your trees and shrubs to prevent damage to branches. Prune your wisterias if you are lucky to have one - cutting back the side shoots to two or three buds. Prune back winter flower and Jasmine (Jasminum nudiflorum) after it has finished flowering. Take off all dead flowers from winter flowering pansies and generally keep tidy and if you have space in your garden for a nice easy to grow shrub why not plant a vibernum xbodnantense or a sarcococca to fill your garden with a wonderful scent. In the vegetable garden continue chitting your early potatoes for which I am told there will be a shortage of seed potatoes this year. Sow onions, beetroots, broad beans and leeks in modules but take care to allow them plenty of light or they will grow tall and spindly. Continue pruning soft fruit such as gooseberries, cut back main shoots to three buds of last seasons growth and cut back all other shoots to seven and a half centimetre of
the base, low branches grow into the centre of the bush can be removed altogether and white currants and red currants prune back by about seven centimetres and prune all other side shoots back to one bud. Choose up to three of the oldest branches of the well established branches and cut those back to young vigorous shoots. Try not to trample over your lawn too much as you risk damaging the grass particularly through frosty periods and repair any damaged edges. Last but not least - Don’t forget to feed the birds and give access to plenty of clean water
and why don’t you make a log pile to help small mammals and insects to thrive.Heres hoping February is not too dreary and that you have a good gardening month! “In his garden every man may be his own artist without apology or explanation” Louise Beebe Wilder Kind Regards,

Hampton Calendar MONDAY
Ok so who made new year resolutions & who’s broke them already? I’ve made loads this year - one of which was to be more organised. Therefore I’m writing this a whole month early rather than rushing it through on deadline day. So here I am, New Years Eve day, still surrounded by Xmas decs, imagining that it’s February. I dare say when I get the gazette through the door, not much will be different to how it is today, but then, that’s the funny thing about life - you never know what’s round the corner. It’s quite exciting really. Between typing this & seeing it in print anything could have happened. I could have won the lottery (I’ll maybe need to buy a ticket for that to happen though?) we could have had snow. I could have met the future Mr Anonymous (altho that may interfere with my many new year resolutions plans đ&#x;˜‰) I could have lost the food baby that the festive season so kindly gave me. I could have finally bought a damn plug chain so I can throw away the contraption I’ve used the last 4 years to empty the bath. I could have fixed my shower door, my broken garage door & got in the habit of organising the uniforms the night before, so the usual morning stress is avoided. Then again. Maybe I won’t have ;) That’s the beauty of tomorrow’s, there is always something to look towards, a plan, a hope...
What’s hot The new vivacity premier health club is opening this month. I’ve seen so much talk on the Hampton Gazette Facebook page about the prices, positive & negative - I’m looking forward to it being open & used & then maybe see a clearer opinion from people actually using it? Either way, new facilities in the area can surely only be a good thing?
What’s not Easter chocolates in the shop from Boxing Day. I’m too weak to resist offers on cadburys. I think there should be a law against it in January- Where’s the offers on water, fruit & vegetables?! ;)
