Chas Ryan My passion for sport and creating opportunities to be active, has been driven by my long career in the Royal Airforce. After my RAF career, I was an NHS Commissioner with The Primary Care Trust, covering Long- term medical conditions and more recent roles include Public Health and NHS Strategic management, specialising in the promotion of health and wellbeing for various councils and NHS organisations in London. As a UEFA B FA Coach, I was initially part of the team that created the Hampton FC in 2003 and this subsequently led to our twelve teams in 2010, achieving FA Charter Community status. During the last 10 years, I have coached many Junior, Youth and Adult teams ( Male & Female ), enjoying some successes at local and County level. In 2004, I became involved with the multi-sports charity, Hampton Community Sports Association, which was on lease from the City Council. I managed the outdoor facilities and in 2005, I became its Chairman. I continued to develop all opportunities for residents to play sports and worked to improve facilities whilst keeping costs affordable to all residents. Five years on, I have a dedicated group of volunteers who have established numerous clubs and

activities which include Football, Netball and Running as well as hosting tournaments and social events on a regular basis. The facility is FREE for Disabled groups and at a very low hire cost for organisations such as Slimming World. The HCSA has received sports awards from Living Sport and Civic Awards from Peterborough City Council. We have run Soccer schools' development programmes with Manchester and Peterborough United Football Clubs. Plans are currently in place to have new 3G Astro with a re-branding to expand sports and their appeal to our growing community. ( Look out for the relaunch early this year ). Having had a break of 4 years as a Parish Councillor with Hampton Parish Council, I have recently returned and am looking forward to promoting our affordable community facilities and open spaces. I firmly believe that facilities in Hampton have great positive impact on our health, mobility and deter any potential involvement in anti-social activities. We should be proud of what we have here in Hampton and I am keen to work with Parish Council colleagues on all areas which maintain and promote local facilities, fostering excellent health and welfare opportunities for residents.

December saw the group host an Art Exhibition showcasing the crafts carried out at sessions by our volunteers over the last two years. In attendance was Josie, Programme Manager from Peterborough Presents, which has recently funded Hampton Tiddlers for craft materials. We have already been able to boost our stocks for 2017. Thank you so much for this. The children who attended the session participated in further crafts; making star decorations to take home and also got involved in painting, including using their handprints. A photo wall was on display until the end of December following encouragement by the Tesco Community Champion. We hope you got the opportunity pop along and have a look. Remember for more information, all upcoming sessions are listed on our Facebook page.

Hampton College A little update from Hampton College, just to mention how proud we are of our students, especially at this time of year. Our Sixth Form have been working hard with CSK Church to collect donations for the Food Bank and then distribute to Hampton families in need this winter. Students have also organised a Christmas Jumper Day in aid of Save the Children, to again raise money for those in need. A big well done to the U13 girls football team, who beat Hitchin School for Girls in the 4th round of the ESFA PlayStation Cup. The fixture saw all kinds of ups and down for both teams. With pure grit and

determination, Hampton won 5-3, with a place in the 5th round secured for the girls. We are very proud of the Tycoons in Schools project team who organised and delivered a session at Hampton Hargate School to Year 5 students. The session was delivered to inspire other students about Business Studies and Enterprise. This half term, our Arts Department have been so busy delivering the Musical Soiree, Carol Concert and Presentation Evening – we are very lucky to be able to showcase the talents of both our staff and students. We wish you a very happy New Year - from all at Hampton College!

A very Happy New Year from Hampton Hargate Primary! We had a fantastic end to 2016 and are really looking forward to a busy 2017 with various sporting activities, residentials and other school trips and visits. To round off last term, our Bike it Crew once again held their obstacle course for the Key Stage 2 children to complete on their bikes or scooters. They worked very hard throughout the day to ensure every child who took part had fun and completed the obstacle course safely - all the children thoroughly enjoyed the day! Thank you also to everyone who took part in the bling a bike/ jacket/scooter competition as part of Power down fortnight Amelie was a worthy winner with a fantastically "blinged" scooter! And finally, thank you to everyone who came and supported our Christmas performances. We are sure you will agree that the children did us all proud! A big thank you

to the Teachers and TAs who spent many hours directing and choreographing! Thank you also to those lovely people who kindly made costumes. Our final thank you is to our Friends of Hampton Hargate and to everyone who came to our Christmas Fayre at the beginning of December. The afternoon was a great success and really kick started our Christmas celebrations. We are still totalling up all the funds raised and hope to be able to announce a grand total soon!

"On pavements and the bark of trees I have found whole worlds."

Walking round James’s Pond recently I was struck by the variety and beauty of tree bark. Inspired I took a few photos. At this time of year, with few leaves present, it is a good time to appreciate bark patterns; both the variation in colour and the life that grows on them.

B

ark is essential for protecting the tree against animals, fungi, disease and from drying out. Really a sort of protective skin. If the bark does get damaged then the opening allows fungi and disease to enter and affect the health of the tree. Sap will ooze out of the cut and harden in an attempt to seal the damaged area. If the bark is removed all around the tree, however, most tree species will die. Many animals will eat bark. Voles often eat bark at the base of young trees, unfortunately often killing these young saplings. They can also climb saplings and eat the bark around the base of branches. Rabbits also have a tendency to nibble at bark around the base of trees. Deer strip bark, particularly in the winter when other food is scarce. They can also damage it with their horns. Grey squirrels gnaw at bark to get to the sweet, sap-filled layers just beneath the surface. Bark is a home to many other plants and creatures. Those trees with craggy

12 12

barks provide homes for many species of insects and spiders. This in turn attracts birds, which feed on them; notably the tree creeper and the crested tit. The tree creeper uses its specially adapted thin, curved beak to probe and find insects. Bark beetles are among the insects that it looks for. There are many lichens, algae and plants that live on tree bark but these don’t actually cause the tree itself any harm. Different lichens and mosses attach themselves to barks that suit them. Lichens are mainly grey to green in colour, forming crusty patches, leafy mats or hanging/branching growths. The most common type of algae is a yellow-green in colour They produce their own food from sunlight and not from the tree bark. I don’t think it is particularly easy, though, to distinguish between algae and lichens. Mosses are easier to recognise. They have clear leaves and stems, usually only two millimetres long.

For some it will be the vote to leave the European Union, or the Presidential election in the USA – decisions that will impact the future of our country and indeed the world, but as yet, no one can be totally sure of just how much change lies ahead and what that change will look like. Why choose a Resolution member? What is Resolution in the context of Family Law? It is a community of 6,500 family justice professionals who work with families and individuals to resolve issues in a constructive way. This is the official description of Resolution and all quality family lawyers in England and Wales will belong to this national organisation. What does it do for you, the potential user of legal services if you are having to deal with the breakdown of a relationship and/ or problems with parental rights to your children? If you consult a family solicitor who is a member of Resolution, you should be confident that

your case will be dealt with considering the needs of the whole family, in particular the best interests of the children if relevant, and most of all, promoting a non-conflictual approach to your case which, if maintained throughout, is guaranteed to produce a more satisfactory final outcome. An improved Code of Practice was launched in the recent Good Divorce Week during which 150 Resolution members met with MPs at Westminster to promote the campaign for no fault divorce and rights for cohabiting couples – more of that later.

New Year NEW YOU

T

he end of the year is not just a time that we spend partying, drinking and having fun with our friends and families. For many people it is when they evaluate what they have done during the year and what they should change in the upcoming year. Many of us make resolutions every single year but most of us give in quite quickly and slip back into old comfortable habits. Here are some of the most common resolutions:

Weight loss Trying to lose some wieght is the most popular resolution and many of us repeat it year after year. The key is not to set your goal too high and not to deprive yourselves of your favourite treats. Small steps will help you start to make a difference and with the help of local support groups making friends with similar goals will hopefully give you the boost you need.

Exercise Do we do enough? It's cold outside so do we even want to go out? But there is so much choice when it comes to

Gazette Feature It’s that time of year again when we all make those New Year’s Resolutions but do we stick to them? exercise and most of us want to feel and look good and after the festive eating, so exercise is a good way to shift those extra pounds. Power walking, jogging, and ditching the car as much as possible will start to get you out and about more. Join the gym or even an outdoor bootcamp class if you really want to go for it.

Giving up smoking and drinking If you are a regular smoker and drinker then this is a hard one but there are many support groups locally, including advice from your local chemist, that can help you get rid of bad habits. For smokers, nicotine patches and electronic cigarettes are useful. Contact the NHS for a list of support groups.

Life changes – new job Stuck in a rut, struggling to get up in the morning? Then maybe a career change is in order. Brush up your CV and start putting the feelers out. You never know what could be just around the corner.

Decluttering/ getting organised

If you have not used it in the last year then you don’t need it! Having a good declutter in the home will make you feel a whole lot better and create space. Old clothes and books pass on to charity and spend some time decluttering the cupboards and draws. You never know you may even find a hidden gem that you had forgotten about. Always remember a tidy home is a happy home. See our article on page 12 for more help with this.

Saving money Kickstart the new year by saving money through switching your energy supplier and/or creating a family budget. Quit bad habits that eat away at your pocket and introduce 'no spending' days.

Travel more The world is a beautiful and amazing place with so many breathtaking sights. If we had the money we would all like to

Kurryz

Indian Restaurant & Takeaway Service

travel more and ditch the yearly package holiday to Spain. But if you don’t have the money, we have many lovely places to see and visit locally, from countryside walks to stately homes. The coast isn’t a million miles away from Peterborough, so hop in the car and enjoy exploring our local area.

Spend less time on social media

How many of us check our phones before bed and the moment we wake up? Spending too much time on Facebook and other social networks is a considerable problem for a surprising number of people these days. For many, logging in and checking friends' activities is habitual. Keep the phones and tablets away from the bedroom to urge the resist to check whilst in bed. A small step like this may help you slowly lessen the need for constant social media checks.

Consumer Courier

by Eileen Le Voi

Be sale savvy when searching for a January bargain online As a nation of bargain hunters, we love nothing more than the satisfaction of snapping up a juicy January deal – from cut price clothing to low cost luxuries.

B

ut while many of us rejoice in a post-Christmas spending spree, so do the online fraudsters and fake traders. A country-wide campaign run by Action Fraud has been warning people of the dangers of online shopping fraud throughout the festive period, as well as all types of fraud which people fall victim to during the season of spending. New figures released in December show that last year, victims reported losing over £10 million to fraudsters when shopping online for Christmas presents. The largest loss was one

victim who lost £86,000 when he tried to purchase a boat from a fraudster on Ebay. The advice is also very relevant to the January sales, and here are some tips on how to avoid getting caught out by the New Year misery makers. One of the worst offenders are the counterfeiters. Counterfeit goods range from clothes, bags, watches, perfume, cosmetics and electrical items as well as pirate DVDs, CDs, computer software and games. However, more and more people are now prepared to

knowingly buy fake items as gifts, but there are serious risks involved with counterfeit goods. Fake goods are often bad quality and in most cases unsafe. Counterfeit electrical goods are not put through the same vigorous safety checks and fake cosmetics and fragrances have been found to contain toxic levels of chemicals and unpleasant substances. Our advice, as well as that of the police and Action Fraud, is don’t rush into spending your cash on what looks like it is a great offer. Take a few minutes to check and research what you are buying and

Safe Local Trades can recommend trusted and reliable tradespeople across a wide range of areas – all of which come with a customer seal of approval. Go to www.safelocaltrades.com or telephone 01733 530019

where/who you are buying it from. If the deal looks too good to be true, the chances are it probably is. And be vigilant when it comes to snapping up offers and deals which appear on your social media channels - as research shows that these are popular and preferred platforms for the fraudsters to target victims. So make sure that you don’t get short changed by the fraudsters during the January sales. To report a fraud and cyber crime and receive a police crime reference number, call Action Fraud on 0300 123 2040 or use the online fraud reporting tool at www.actionfraud.police.uk/ reporting-fraud
