The Parish Church of Hampton

New Year The New Year is a time when we reflect back over the year that has completed and look to the year ahead, often starting the new year with a resolution. Was it a year full of happy memories, or ones we would rather forget? Are we looking forward to the year ahead, or beginning the year with anxious thoughts? 2014 will always be remembered by CSK Church as the year when Hampton finally opened the doors of its own church building. It was great celebrating our first Christmas together in our new home. We still haven’t fully fitted out the inside of the building and our New Year’s Resolution is to complete the interior and to be able to open our doors most days of the week. Whatever memories you have of 2014, and whether you’re looking forward to 2015 or beginning it with concerns, we would love to travel the journey with you. At CSK we laugh with one another. We cry with one another. Jesus did the same when he walked the earth. He loved through good times and bad, and we try to do the same. So we provide a place where all are welcome, including those celebrating, and those who are hurting, where everyone can find love, encouragement and hope.

Bringing the culinary delights of the Far East’s streets to the banks of the Nene East are delighted to be ringing in the New Year with a delicious NEW two-course Street Food Menu for only £10 per person. New to Peterborough, street food is influenced by local culture. The best food from South East Asian countries is often sold and eaten on the streets and East would like to invite you to come and try this in the comfortable surroundings of the restaurant. East Restaurant is situated on the upper deck of Charters Bar, just next to Town Bridge, only a 5 minute walk from the hustle and bustle of the city centre. The floating restaurant, which prides itself on providing tantalising flavours from the Far East, is offering you the chance to sample their authentic Thai Street Food Menu. Throughout January, the talented team of Thai chefs will be offering you the opportunity to savour some traditional Street Food dishes. This menu will be available from Sunday until Thursday evenings proving that it’s not just the shops that are tempting you with their bargain deals.

To experience the culinary delights and superb hospitality of this unique restaurant, call 01733 315 702 now to make a reservation.

Why not make a resolution to join us one Sunday morning at 10am? We’d love to meet you and get to know you. Happy New Year.

New year at Sacrewell

Hampton wildlife

Find out what’s in store at Sacrewell in 2015 as the centre opens its doors for free for one day only.

January can be a bleak month with heavy frosts and snow, but despite the coldness the wildlife of Hampton is stirring. Although not plentiful snowdrops can be found if searched for carefully. Their early flowering is aided by hardened leaf tips that can push through the frozen soil. We may wonder why they flower so early when there are few insects to fertilise them. They overcome this scarcity by reproducing themselves mainly through the division of each bulb.

If you are interested in camping and caravanning, birthday parties or school visits, you can pick up plenty of information, or book your event in advance.

Marketing executive Megan Allen said: “Sacrewell is part of the William Scott Abbott Trust, now in its 51st year as a local food and farming charity.

Speak to the team at Origin8 at Sacrewell to find out about their catering options and sample a taster of what they have on offer.

“We want to offer this opportunity to everyone who has visited Sacrewell in the past or has never been and is curious to see what we have here, so that they can discover for themselves that Sacrewell has something for everyone. From heritage enthusiasts to young parents, budding photographers to animal lovers, we’ve got it covered.”

The Playbarn will of course be open, and for one day only Sacrewell is running a membership offer for new customers who can take advantage of a 20 per cent discount off their new membership. Megan added: “A lot of people in the area think they know Sacrewell and have us pinned as a farm park for children but we’re not. We hope that after our open day, people will see us in a new light and will be paying us a visit more often.”

January is a prime time to see resourceful behaviour from birds in the face of food shortage and difficult weather. Green woodpeckers and jays, for example, have both been recorded digging through snow almost half a metre deep to get at treasures hidden below – anthills and acorns respectively. They use landmarks still visible above the surface to find them. A blackbird has also been seen brushing snow away from a favourite feeding site holding a stick in its bill! It’s these resourceful birds that are most likely to last the winter. It is they who will compete best when the time comes to acquire a mate and secure a good territory. And it is often these individuals who break through the winter straitjacket, and fill the air with the voices of the coming spring.

Remember that blue and great tits will now be scouting around for nestboxes for Spring, so you need to have them in place as soon as possible; the ideal time to put nestboxes up is early winter. You may also see grey squirrels engaged in a courtship chase during January, where the females are pursued by one or more males vying for her attention and the chance to father her offspring. They can be very noisy with strange chatterings and raspings. Squirrels might sleep during the very coldest days to save energy, however they, along with foxes and deer, can remain active throughout the winter. They may grow a thicker coat in winter to help keep their body temperature constant during the cold weather. They have also prepared for winter by eating as much as possible during autumn to fatten up or hide food away so they can find it again in winter when there is less food around. what has happened and the next steps, as well as the grand plans to re-launch the mill later in the year.

Visitors will be able to find out about planned events for the year including a star party on 21 February, a traditional spring fair on 3 and 4 May and tons of summer fun.

The wonders of nature can sometimes be missed when there is an abundance of leaves, but on frosty January days spiders’ webs stand out as one of nature’s most artistic features. Trees stand starkly in fields and woodlands in winter with buds poised to burst when spring at last arrives. They have a particular beauty in their bare form.

FREE ENTRY

“We’re really looking forward to seeing some old faces among the new as well, and hope they’ll become regulars in the near future.”

On 24 January, admission fees will be waived at Sacrewell, near Wansford, Peterborough, so that staff can tell all visitors about what they have in store for what promises to be a very exciting year, and start the year with some great promotional offers.

The Friends & Family Test (FFT) The Friends and Family Test was introduced in all GP surgeries from 1 December. Some of you may have come across this before as it has been Hampton Health used in hospitals for some time. The intention of the test is to provide the opportunity to every NHS patient to give feedback on the service provided in the practice so we can continually review our service. It is based on one simple question: ‘How likely are you to recommend our GP practice to friends and family if they needed similar care or treatment?’ You will be able to choose an answer from six options and there is also a follow up question to ask why you have selected that statement. You will have the option to give your comments anonymously, but if you do leave your contact details then we might get in touch, to talk to you about your feedback so we can better understand your views.

This feedback will help us learn more about what you think of your experience – what you like and what you think we could improve. Ultimately, you will be helping us make changes that will ensure we can offer the best possible care.

Hampton’s young tycoons!

You know, just saying that makes me feel the year ahead is full of so much expectation that it fills me with wonderful anticipation of what lies ahead.

Our first meeting this year is on Thursday 15 January and we would love to see you. Meetings take place at the FamilyAction Children’s Centre, which you will find just behind Hampton Hargate School. Follow the path that runs between Busy Bees Nursery and the school. You will find the building on the right hand side just before you reach the Tump. Meetings start promptly at 7pm.

For promotion, stalls were put up at the recent Hampton College Music Festival and in Serpentine Green Shopping Centre. Director of Sixth Form and Business Studies teacher at Hampton College Paul Edenbrow was extremely proud of the boy’s success. “It is wonderful to see our students showing entrepreneurial spirit,” he said. During September and October each year, Peterborough based Safe Local Trades organises fund-raising events for their chosen charity Age UK Peterborough. This year, several skydives were organised and a team took part in the annual Great Eastern Run. All events were an overall success and the organiser, Eileen Le Voi, owner of Safe Local Trades, said: “We would like to thank each and every volunteer who took part as well as everyone who sponsored them in their events, all of which helped to raise an amazing £6,720.25 for this very worthy local charity.”

Eileen went on to say, “We would particularly like to thank Axiom Housing Association for getting involved and helping to raise over £1,600. In addition to the skydives that two members of staff took part in, dozens of individual sheltered accommodation schemes raised money by having coffee mornings, quizzes, and the like – it shows great community spirit to know that elderly people were raising money for their counterparts.”

David Bache, Chief Executive of Age UK Peterborough, said: “We are so delighted with this excellent achievement by Eileen and the fabulous volunteers. This is the largest amount we have ever raised in one campaign, so my sincere thanks go to Eileen Le Voi, Axiom Housing Association and all the wonderful volunteers who make such a difference to the work we do to help and support older people in Peterborough. Over the past few years, Eileen and Safe Local Trades have helped raise over £25,000 – no other local company has ever raised this amount for our charity and we are enormously grateful.”

Hampton teenagers Sam Cooke, Owen Howard, Gianni Forcelatti and Jordan Wathall are behind the venture, with the hope of winning a £1,000 cash investment and the chance to meet their business heroes. The boys are taking part in a challenge called Tycoon in Schools, a competition set up by Dragons’ Den’s Peter Jones in 2012 to hunt down the next big entrepreneur.

Not only has the company given them a chance to donate to the local area, Sam Cooke believes the experience has helped him “demonstrate business skills learnt in lessons”, with Gianni Forcelatti saying it has helped him “develop confidence skills when approaching people”. When asked if they thought they would win the competition, a resounding yes from all sides came back. The “business model has potential. The sales did not go as well as we thought it could.

For the ladies of Hampton WI, we have a fantastic 2015 lined up with amazing meetings to look forward to including Sugarcraft, Beading, 40s/50s Makeover Night and Basket Weaving to name but a few.

The Tree Traders Company has definitely been making the headlines this month. But who exactly are they and what do they do?

Every competitor, including the Tree Traders, received a start-up loan to set up the company and the idea has blossomed from there. The Tree Traders have been selling non-drop Christmas Trees to the Hampton and Peterborough area, with half the profits donated to Thorpe Hall Hospice to help with their redevelopment programme.

Start your new year with a promise to pop in to meet us and find out for yourself what a lovely bunch of ladies we are. It doesn’t cost anything to come to your first meeting so what’s stopping you?

We will be telling NHS England monthly what responses we have had to the first question – numbers only – this will be completely anonymous, and the results will be published on the NHS choices website. Look out for the questionnaires when you visit the practice and please fill one in to let us know how you feel about your recent experience of our service.

Happy new year from all at Hampton Cricket Club.

With Christmas over, gearing up for the cricket season can now begin in earnest. Winter nets at The Nene Park Academy on Friday nights start on 9 January from 7-9pm. The cost of these sessions will be £5 per person, and with four lanes in operation we expect everyone to get plenty of opportunity to bat and bowl against players of varying standards. Nets will be open to both sexes, an important step for the ladies

as they prepare to compete regularly against men for the first time, in Hunts Division 5. This will be a mixed side, but the majority of the team will come from last season’s ladies team. An exciting new challenge. The club’s fixtures for the upcoming season have been added to the website, hamptoncc.org, so time to get planning your summer holidays around them!

Method Preheat the oven to 240°C/220°C Fan/Gas 9. Peel the potatoes using a potato peeler and remove any blemishes or ‘eyes’. Slice lengthwise into approx 1cm thick rectangular chips.

Bring a large saucepan of salted water to the boil. Add the chips and cook for 4 minutes. Drain and leave aside for 10 minutes to dry.

Return the chips to the dry saucepan, cover with a lid and shake to ‘rough up’ the edges of the chips – this roughness is important to the texture of the chips.

Spray a metal baking tray with low calorie cooking spray. Transfer the chips to the tray, spray lightly with low calorie cooking spray and bake in the oven for 30 minutes, turning occasionally, until golden brown on all sides. Drain them on absorbent kitchen paper and serve with salt and vinegar.

Tip: For extra flavour sprinkle your chips with garlic salt, herbs and spices

Happy New Year!

Divorce and the over-60s!

Have you thought about your New Year’s Resolution?

The number of divorcees aged 60 and above has nearly doubled in the UK since 1990, new research from the think tank International Longevity Centre (ILC-UK) has revealed.

By Glenn Barker Many of us set ourselves individual targets and goals at the start of a new year. The top resolutions, in no particular order, are usually based on losing weight, staying fit and healthy, spending less and saving more, getting organised and generally ‘getting the house in order’. Do any of these sound familiar? At the time of writing this, I have no idea what my resolution(s) will be but I am sure that, after over-indulging in many ways throughout the festive period, it will probably be along those lines stated above. Perhaps you have existing insurances and would like to try and save money by reviewing those?

Our practice frequently sees cases where couples in this age group simply drift apart, particularly when children have grown up and left home for university or to achieve independence. This kind of ‘empty nest syndrome’ means the dynamic between couples changes, with new issues arising which may have been ignored in the past when raising the children. With life expectancy increasing, together with the more active lifestyle of people in and approaching retirement, many may simply be unwilling to spend another 20 or 30 years living with someone they no longer love. This is a hugely important issue to consider and it is vital that those considering separation and/or divorce speak to a family law expert to gain a proper understanding of their position. There are particular complexities for older separating couples, such as the sharing of pensions in payment and inheritance planning. Ultimately, legal advice is essential to ensure that any separation can be resolved as amicably and quickly as possible.

Think tank finds ‘silver separators’ have almost doubled since 1990

Maybe you have no cover in place (see December’s issue in covering your main asset) and would like to take out cover? It could be that you would like to start saving for the future or you already have savings in place and would like to discuss the options available. When it comes to your financial future I can help you become financially fit. So, why not kick start your New Year by spending less, saving more and getting organised? I look forward to seeing you in 2015. You should always seek qualified advice from an Independent Financial Adviser. If you have a financial question, email: gbarker@beaconwealth.co.uk

A Hampton Happy New Year

Your guide to

Living in Hampton

High days and holidays are great opportunities to get together with family, friends and neighbours, like this group entered into our recent photo competition by Sarah McNair

In a few days’ time almost half of you reading this will be making resolutions for the new year. According to researchers, only 12 per cent of people making resolutions will succeed with their resolutions. But the same studies show you can increase your chances if you have the support of family or friends in the local community.

them Hampton FC, Hampton Scouts and Hampton Nature Reserve. Close to home, another group looking for extra pairs of hands is the Hampton Events Committee which, after taking a break in 2014, is planning a number of exciting activities for the whole community in 2015. The Gazette’s Facebook page is also a great source of ways to help out, for instance details of the informal litter picks where extra pairs of hands are always welcome.

In that spirit here are the nation’s top six most popular New Year Resolutions, together with our suggestions for finding support on Hampton using our website www.ohhampton.co.uk

5. Get organised

1. Spend more time with family and friends

With the Sue Ryder charity shop at Hampton Vale looking for donations, there’s no excuse for not starting to clear the clutter. If it all feels a little overwhelming then break it into bite-size chunks – two drawers, one cupboard or one shelf in the garage each week. The amazing thing about getting organised is how much lighter it makes you feel (whether or not losing weight is one of your resolutions!)

How often do you say ‘we must meet up sometime’, and then somehow the year has flown by without you getting together? The answer is to block out time in your diary for family and friends now, before it fills up with other commitments. If you’re short of ideas on what you can do together, take a look at the new ‘events’ section on the Hampton interactive map. Plan a spring walk together through Robin’s Wood, a summer picnic by the lake, or a major meet-up when the cycle cinema returns later in the year.

6. Learn something new, do something different Any of the suggestions above could help you expand your horizons – mental or physical! But if we’ve not inspired you yet then how about selecting something from one of the following six challenges:

2. Get fit and/or lose weight Hampton may just be one of the easiest places to get and stay fit, with a wide range of waymarked lakeside routes on everyone’s doorstep. Click on the website’s Hampton Outdoors page for a list of suggested routes and distances. Search the ‘health and fitness’ category on the interactive map for local fitness facilities or click through to the Hampton Leisure Centre or Premier Fitness sites for details of classes. Or you could choose the ‘clubs and groups’ category on the map to find local groups offering everything from cricket to yoga.

• Cycle the whole of the green wheel http://www.pect.org.uk/ working-with-us/local-communities/green-wheel. • Try geo-caching (see the page on our website for all you need to know to get started). • Sign up for the Hampton Community Run or one of the many other charity runs you’ll see promoted in the Gazette and on our website during the year. There’s nothing like a goal and deadline to keep you motivated and moving.

3. Stop smoking

• Set the youngest members of the family a target of visiting all of Hampton’s play areas during the year (or in one day if you’re feeling really energetic!). You’ll find a guide to each on the interactive map.

Hampton Health’s website has a link through to a range of tools to help you stop smoking in 2015. Both Boots and Tesco pharmacies at Serpentine Green are among those offering special services to help people stop smoking

• Attend a meeting of Hampton Parish Council to see local democracy at work. Their website has future dates.

4. Help others

• If you’ve never organised a street party, get together with the neighbours to plan one for the Rugby World Cup or, in September, Queen Elizabeth becoming Britain’s longest-reigning monarch.

In the July 2014 issue of the Gazette we spotlighted some of the local groups looking for volunteers to help them make a difference, among

Star Wars: Episode VII – The Force Awakens After a 15-year absence, the Star Wars franchise returns to the big screen in December 2015. Directed by Star Trek supremo JJ Abrahams, this film has massive shoes to fill, as we continue to follow Luke Skywalker and his friends on a journey through the stars. Resuming 30 years after episode VI, no one knows how the storyline will pan out, but we do know the following characters WILL be returning: Chewbacca, Princess Leia, fans’ favourite R2-D2, Han Solo and, of course, Luke Skywalker.

What to do in Hampton! For an adrenaline-fuelled experience for young people, look no further than Karate. Adrenaline Martial Arts makes a visit to Hampton Vale’s Community Centre on Friday afternoons between 4-4.45pm and offers exciting, energetic sessions for youngsters between 4 and 11 years of age. The mixed boys and girls sessions are the perfect opportunity to get your children out of the house, off the PlayStation and getting up and active.

With the Empire destroyed and Darth Vader dead, how will Luke Skywalker move on from the bombshell that Darth Vader was his father? Who will be the new villain? Will there be any new ships? And, of course, will there be any new heroes? All these questions, that sci-fi crazy fans are dying to have answered, will be revealed this year. What more do you need to look forward to?

film

Jurassic World The wait is nearly over, on 12 June the Park will re-open with a chance to ride some rides, drive a car through a T-Rex pen (yes, you read that correctly) and, of course, this isn’t any old park, this is Jurassic Park; or should I say Jurassic World! This brand new sequel to the hit dinosaur film comes to our big screens this summer, with a twist never seen before.

Sudoku

Fill in the grid so that each box and line contains the numbers 1-6 only once. This isn’t one for the faint-hearted.

The club offers girls a chance to develop their skills away from the sometimes competitive boys with their just-as-exciting Pink Karate sessions. Whichever session you decide to sign up for, the club offers new students a four week trial of their classes, including a welcome pack and free uniform. Make sure you don’t miss out on the chance to try a fun, competitive and energy-sapping experience that will surely leave your children begging for more!

There are many things to glean from the trailer, including a school trip to a park full of fruit- and flesh-eating prehistoric beasts and, of course, an interesting, thought-provoking question: should you attempt to train a pack of Velociraptors? Probably not a great idea. Another outstanding point to take from the trailer is a a genetically-modified dinosaur! Yes, you also read that correctly. The idea of a Build a Dino workshop has received a mixed reception, but in all honesty, who knows what this film has in store? Let’s hope they don’t have any Stegosaurus meat…

Batman: Arkham Night Another date to add to your diary is 2 June, the release of the blockbuster game Batman: Arkham Night.

Batman: Arkham Night is the fourth instalment in this thrilling game. As well as Batman, the game also stars a range of characters from the well-known films and comics, including Scarecrow, Penguin, Harley Quinn and The Riddler. In this edition, after a long wait, the iconic Batmobile finally makes an appearance in drivable gameplay mode. This version of the car is different to the one seen in Arkham Asylum; it is both armoured and functions much like the Tumbler in the Christopher Nolan films, but its shape resembles the classic designs. The story line follows on one year from the death of arch villain The Joker, with Batman struggling to come to terms with his love/hate relationship with his most famous adversary...

The new term at Hampton Vale Primary School brings with it many exciting learning opportunities as the children begin their new themes.

Learning themes ranging from the Stone Age to World War II and from the Great Fire of London to freedoms and responsibilities are all on the agenda. The new term also gives the children an opportunity to look back at some of their learning experiences last month. An incredibly busy period saw, for example: • The youngest children in the school – in Early Years’ Foundation Stage – performed their version of the Christmas Nativity story to parents and carers, and to the rest of the school, in a series of performances. • Children in Year Three ending their pantomime theme by watching a production of Jack and the Beanstalk at the city’s Key Theatre; they then compared the versions of the story that they had written with the show that they watched. • As part of their theme ‘investigating the lives of children in Victorian times’, Year Four children experienced a Victorian Christmas at the Stibbington Centre, comparing their own Christmas celebrations with those of 150 years ago. • As part of their theme work about life in Tudor times, Year Five children spent a day discovering more about the period during a visit to Hampton Court Palace, London. • Children from across the school, including the school choir, performed Christmas songs and carols at a number of community events and at Avery House, Hampton.

Vale Community Pre-school Vale Community Pre-school has some very exciting news, we will be opening our sister school on 6 January 2015. Our pre-school will cater for children aged 2 years and over, Monday-Friday 9am-12noon, term time only. How many of you have made a New Year’s resolution in the past and actually stuck to it?

Lose weight? Check. Start exercising? Check. Stop smoking? Check. Was it just the last of the pine needles beneath your feet or a real prick of conscience? Was it merely the tree’s angel going back into her box or has the spirit of our past year already fallen? Does it feel a little gloomy because the pretty lights have all gone out, or are the cold shadows cast by the January dawn exactly what will provoke in us the will to change things for the better.

New Year’s Resolutions

The beginning of a week, a month, or a year forms what the psychologists have called a ‘notational boundary’, and with that, researchers suspect, comes a sense of optimism, the promise of ‘a new me’. Perhaps it is the novelty factor in the word ‘new’, but somehow many of us manage to quickly put the errors of the past behind us, by transforming it into a new sense of optimism for the future. Nevertheless, that novelty appears to quickly wear off. Research indicates that a tiny eight per cent of New Year resolutions actually succeed! So, how can you shorten the odds of staying out of the betting shop, let cigarettes finally go up in a puff of smoke and increase the chances of actually keeping that excess weight off? Optimism, however, isn’t always constructive. If we’re too positive, we condemn ourselves to fail. So if follows that, if you set more realistic goals, you are more likely to succeed. Make your resolutions realistic Make resolutions that you think you can keep. If, for example, your aim is to exercise more frequently, schedule three or four days a week at the gym instead of seven. If you would like to eat healthier, try replacing dessert with something else you enjoy, like fruit or yogurt, instead of seeing your diet as a form of punishment.

*

Don’t beat yourself up Perfection is unattainable. Remember that minor missteps on the path to reaching your goals are completely normal. Don’t give up completely because you ate a brownie and broke your diet, or skipped the gym for a week because you were busy. Everyone has ups and downs; resolve to recover from your mistakes and get back on track. Team up with others who share your goal and make your resolution obvious Research has also shown that sharing resolutions with family and friends, and also sharing your statement of intent with others, can help you succeed. It’s a way to build accountability into the mix; and in the era of social media this can be a readily accessible tool. Consider joining a support group to reach your goals, such as a workout class at your gym, or a group of co-workers quitting smoking. Having someone to share your struggles and successes with makes your journey to a healthier lifestyle that much easier and less intimidating. Jotting down what you stand to lose by breaking your resolve will help to remind you why you are trying to break a bad habit.

by Mel Elliott Anecdotal evidence suggests that one’s commitment to a determined spouse can also be helpful. “I haven’t had a cigarette in probably six years,” President Obama once said, “...because I’m scared of my wife.” Accepting help from those who care about you and will listen strengthens your resilience and ability to manage stress caused by your resolution. If you feel overwhelmed or unable to meet your goals on your own, consider seeking professional help. Psychologists are trained to understand the connection between the mind and body. They can offer strategies as to how to adjust your goals so that they are attainable, as well as help you change unhealthy behaviours and address emotional issues. To conclude, here’s a New Year’s resolution anyone can keep: Resolve not to make any more New Year’s resolutions. Now, wasn’t that easy? You know in your own heart what you want to change and although now is often as good a time as ever, by not limiting yourself to a once-a-year, do-or-die, all-out assault on that Everest of debt, those flabby thighs, or the hideous wallpaper you keep meaning to replace, you may find that the finish line isn’t so far away after all.

Unhealthy behaviours develop over the course of time. Replacing the ones we’re not so proud of also requires time. Don’t become overwhelmed and think that you have to reassess everything in your life. Instead, work toward changing one thing at a time.
