Summer Fun Day

Tips to help prevent hayfever

Saturday 2 July, 1 - 4pm Friends of Hampton Hargate Primary School are holding a Summer Fun Day. Admission: adults £0.50, children FREE. Come and join us! Raffle prizes to be won are kindly donated by Whirlpool, the PTA and Regal Park, and include £100 cash, a Whirlpool washing machine and a hamper.

Hampton Seniors by Dianne Dearden The Queen's Birthday celebrations are now over, the seniors street party on the 11 June serving afternoon tea was a real success. Spending was brisk, there were many good prizes to be won, and we raised enough money to clear the balance for Summer’s new wheelchair. Kate, Summer’s Mum, and Madison her sister, are looking forward to the new wheelchair being delivered. A big 'thank you' to the Hampton community for showing their support at this event.

Watery eyes? Can't stop sneezing? It must be that time of year! Hay fever is the unfortunate downside to summer.

Hampton's first Big Picnic We are excited to be launching Hampton's First Big Picnic this month and if successful it will hopefully become an annual Hampton event. CSK Hampton Church and KingsGate Community Church will be organising the event, with the aim of bringing Hampton together for a few hours of fun and food. Turn up with your picnic and blanket on the playing fields behind the tump. We will be organising some optional traditional games like rounders, tug of war etc. We are so privileged to live where we do, so let's take this opportunity to get to know our neighbours and fellow residents. Very limited parking is available so please walk to the event if possible. Any questions please contact facebook.com/kingsgatehampton or Rachael T: 07983 421139

Make sure you have hay fever relief at the ready, from nasal spray and eye drops to tablets. Symptoms can include swollen eyes and a blocked or runny nose, so it can really have a negative impact on your day. We Recommend a fast working antihistamine such as Benadryl. You can also use eye drops such as Opticrom Hayfever Drops. Also keep disruptive symptoms at bay with our top tips to combating hay fever • Close windows when you can to prevent pollen coming in. • Avoid going out mid-morning and early evening when the pollen count is highest. • Wash hands and face regularly to remove pesky pollen residue. • Tie hair up and out of your face as pollen can get caught in it T: 01733 248371 E: info@hamptonpharmacy.co.uk www.hamptonpharmacy.co.uk

Microsoft Support Phone Scam

Sound advice from a local computer expert

Following a recent spate of fake Microsoft support telephone calls, here’s how to recognize and avoid being scammed. When you answer your phone and somebody is claiming to be from Microsoft tech support, please take note of the following important steps: Do not believe them when they claim you have problems with your computer. They don’t even know you have a computer and they are just guessing which operating system you are running. • Do not follow their instructions to click on anything. • Do not purchase any software or services from them. • Never give control of your computer to a third party unless you can confirm that it is a legitimate representative of a computer support team with whom you are already a customer. • Never provide your credit card or financial information to someone claiming to be from Microsoft tech support. These are some of the fake Microsoft companies being used at the moment:

• Microsoft Tech Support • Microsoft Support • Windows Technical Department Support Group • Microsoft Research and Development Team (Microsoft R & D Team) If you think that you might have downloaded malware from a phone tech support scam website or allowed a cybercriminal to access your computer, take these steps: • Change your computer's password, change the password on your main email account, and change the password for any financial accounts, especially your bank and credit card. • Scan your computer with your updated security software (Microsoft Defender, Avast, AVG etc. are all free options) • Download and run free malware scanning software from www.malwarebytes.org

AWARDS

Hampton Tiddlers are in the finals! The ‘International What’s On 4 Junior Awards 2016” are annual awards that celebrate and recognise companies, organisations and individuals who provide activities, classes and days out for children and their families across the UK and Australia.

H

ampton Tiddlers has been recognised and become finalists for the “Best Baby and Toddler Group” category. Two of their group of volunteers Emma Pilarski and Claire Drewett are finalists for the “Outstanding Volunteers” category. Sihan Faustina Yang, one of the founders of the group told us, “It’s a great honour to be

in the finals, the competition is strong but we believe our group has made a big difference to a lot of families in the Peterborough area. All of our volunteers are team players and the number of attendees and regulars indicate we must be doing something right.” Hampton Tiddlers would like to take the opportunity to thank everyone who supported

us by voting, especially the ongoing support from TESCO for providing the community room and facilities and PCVS for supporting us with training and development. The awards ceremony takes place on 23rd June at Chessington World of Adventures. Let’s all keep our fingers crossed that the group get the recognition they truly deserve!

“I first attended Hampton Tiddlers in February 2015, at a time when I was still trying to find my feet as a new mum. I realised I wanted to be more than a visitor to this group, to get involved, to help achieve the goals of the group which included wider recognition and make a small difference to others. With my obsession for crafts working with Claire our Monday morning sessions are very popular. We are achieving something seeing regular

visitors as well as new faces week on week. In my time with the group I have been successful in obtaining vital funding from local companies with my largest achievement being £400 from Peterborough based company BGL which has helped fund the group for events and T shirts for the group. I am now a trustee for the group and part of the management team working to bring fresh ideas and support to the development of the group.”

Claire’s story: “I'm Claire and I have a 3 year old daughter called Bethan. I am one of the management team for Tiddlers and a regular Monday morning volunteer. I thought it was about time I got involved after attending the group from early on in its life and I am glad that I decided to take the extra responsibility. Both

Bethan and I really enjoy our Monday mornings, especially with my partner in crime Emma! I met lots of new people and made good friends through volunteering. It is an opportunity to do something completely different to my regular job. I am really honoured to have been recognised for our group’s achievements.”

8 years and counting

Belinda Smith & Co celebrated their 8th anniversary in business on 1 June this year.

Belinda Smith set up on her own after leaving Buckles Solicitors in Peterborough, where she had been a partner for over 20 years. In 2012 she was joined by another star from the Buckles family department, her now Associate Michele Fielding. The two of them have over 50 years experience in the field of family law. Belinda Smith & Co have been based for the last 6 years in Asset House, a spacious modern building opposite the police station in Thorpe Wood, Peterborough. The practice has never been busier as their excellent reputation spreads ever wider. Belinda says “it seems it is absolutely true that success breeds success, and although it is tempting to expand and take on a third fee earner, I would rather that we maintain our ethos of being a specialist family law practice who can, right from that first telephone enquiry from a client, see a case through to the last day of a court hearing, if that proves necessary”. The practice covers every aspect of family law which is not legally aided. The majority of clients come for advice following relationship breakdown for divorce or cohabitation splits. The practice also has a large children case load. Belinda has many years as a Law Society Children Panel member. Both Belinda and Michele are collaboratively law trained and will always choose the path of amicable settlement, if their clients allow them! Whether it is the traditional route or the mediation/collaboration option, Belinda Smith & Co will provide you with the highest quality of service in this sensitive area of legal practice.

WILDLIFE

The Wildlife of Hampton I recently strolled along the Green Wheel Cycleway, on the other side of the London Road, and took my camera with me. There is a great variety of wildflower blossom over there. A most attractive plant I found was the ground ivy which is often referred to as alehoof due to the likeness of the leaves to horse hooves, and the fact that it was once used to flavour beer before hops were introduced. The flowers themselves can be various shades of blue. Ground ivy was once used in a range of herbal medicines to cure such ailments as eye inflammation and tinnitus. John Clare, the seventeenth century poet from Helpston, wrote of the oxeye daisy: ‘The nodding oxeye bends before the wind…’. As indeed they did whilst I endeavoured to photograph them. They are one of the most common flowers along the Green Cycleway. Before the sixteenth century they were more commonly known as the ‘Moon Daisy’ or ‘Dog Daisy’. I can see why they were called the former but can’t immediately see the association with dogs. Apparently if cattle eat them it can affect the taste of their milk. Wild roses can be found along this cycle path. Often referred to as the dog rose it has sweet scented pink or white flowers which turn to red rosehips in the autumn. These are

Male flowering stinging nettle Ground ivy or alehoof (Labiate)

Dog rose Ox-eye daisy eagerly eaten by birds and small mammals such as voles. These hips are high in vitamin C and were traditionally used to make a healthy syrup. The Ancient Greeks believed that the roots of the dog rose could cure a person bitten by a mad dog. Perhaps that is where the name originated. If you look closely at stinging nettles they too have flowers, although not very large ones. I hadn’t realised until recently that the male stinging nettle flower is different from the female. On female plants the flowers hang

downwards whereas on a male they stand out. The stems and leaves are covered with tiny, pointed stinging hairs. If you touch them they break off and stick into the skin, releasing a complex mix of chemicals which cause an irritating rash. This sting has the effect of deterring both grazing cattle and rabbits. There is historical evidence of nettles being used in medicine, folk remedies, cooking and fibre production. The latter dating back to the Bronze Age where fabric woven from nettle fibre has been found in burial sites.

HamptonWI

About us

It's not easy making friends when you're the new girl in the playground ...

W

hen I moved into Hampton I knew no one in the area. I had a 16 month old son and although I loved our new house and the area we lived in, there was nowhere to go to meet other people or make friends. When my son started school I met other Mums and Dads at the school gate but it wasn't until I joined the local WI (when my eldest son was 6), that I really started to feel like I would enjoy living there. Hampton WI was the brainchild of another couple of younger Hampton ladies who, having moved into the area from outside of Peterborough with young children, were at a loss as to where they could go to get to know other women locally. They tried to raise interest in a general women’s group but it was not until they contacted the local WI Federation and asked them to help that other women began to express an interest in a women’s group and that was when the idea of Hampton WI was born. It seemed having the WI behind it made it more inviting. Hampton WI started in April 2008 and I can honestly say I have made a lot of great friends and

female acquaintances. In fact my first ever best friend was a lady from Hampton WI and when my eldest son developed a rare cancer it was my best friend I went to first. It meant the world to me to have her there and if not for the WI I would not have met her. Hampton WI quickly emerged as a WI that not only had a young average age but was the WI our local Federation would recommend when they had enquiries from ladies wanting to know if there was a ‘younger’ group to go to. The reason for writing this is because the Stanground area has grown hugely over the last 15 years. With the developments of Park Farm and Cardea plus the further development of Yaxley, I am sure that there will be many women, regardless of their age, be it a young wife, single Mum, retired or even widowed lady who has moved in and needs somewhere to go to find friendly female company. We have done so much and enjoyed so many, very funny nights out. But a WI is only as good as its members with each and every

WI being responsible for its own meetings, educational activities and speakers. The main criterion for a WI is that, as a group, you learn something at each meeting regardless of what it is. The best bit is that it's totally up to you what that is. You could be enjoying cocktail making nights, learning about Steam Punk, trying Calligraphy, having a go at belly dancing, learning how to make a Victoria sponge, hosting pudding nights and so much more and if you like a glass of wine, you can have that too! However, most importantly, you would be gaining a great group of friends. Huntingdon & Peterborough Federation of WIs would like to help the areas of Stanground, Park Farm and Cardea form their own WIs. So if you like the idea of making friends, learning useful crafts, skills and gaining knowledge plus finding opportunities to help your community, this could be right up your street.

Julia Harrison Hampton WI President If you are on Facebook, please join the Facebook group called 'WIs of Peterborough and message us T: 07791 741291 to let us know. Alternatively please email our Federation Office on office@hpfwi.co.uk. E: jkharrison@sky.com

M

y sons have benefitted from the fantastic sporting facilities at venues like Beaumont Way and the role models that personify the volunteers that give their spare time to run the numerous football teams there; thank you to the likes of Chas and Simon Ryan, Graham Dawson and all. I have been on the Parish Council for 3 years and have really enjoyed being able to assist in projects that are for the benefit of all. Whether you are resident in Hampton as a home-owner occupier, shared-ownership or Housing Association resident, we all have an equal right to use the great communal areas that Hampton possesses; equally we all have a duty to ensure that we contribute to keeping all areas fit-for-purpose. The support for projects which provide facilities for the youth of the Hampton area are very important to me as is the provision of 1st class education at our Nursery, Primary and Secondary schools; I am a firm believer in Equal Opportunities for all. I believe that the Hampton Parish Council and its Clerks provide a great service in representing the Hampton community. I have really enjoyed setting up the Hampton Centenary Memorial Garden with the other Councillors; it has been brilliant to see it become integral to the CSK Church supported Remembrance Day Service with representation from the Scouting and Guiding Groups being so well hosted by Reverend Sylvia and her team. All-in-all, Hampton is a great place to live and I look forward to assisting with its up-keep as a Parish Councillor and as a resident. Thank you and regards.

There must be many who feel the same as Andrew, whose letter is published below. So this is a callout to our older Gazette readers for articles about their life experiences and younger days. It will give some interesting perspectives on life for all generations, and of course, photographs are always great to receive if you have them, as they help to capture these memories.

memorylane Dear Hampton Gazette Firstly, may I say 'well done' on producing a first-class magazine. I find it most useful. My wife and I moved to a McCarthy & Stone retirement apartment early in 2008 and for five years thoroughly enjoyed the amenities that are provided in the area. Unfortunately, she passed away in 2013 after suffering a massive stroke, so for the last three years have lived on my own. However, my family and the wide open spaces that Hampton offers have been a huge factor in my ability to cope with single living. As with many older people we think we have led uneventful lives, but looking back to the time I spent in the Royal Navy in the 1960s leads me to realise it was anything but uneventful. .Andrew Wade

We don’t think anyone in our community should have to face going hungry. Jesus cared about the hungry and fed them, showing love in action. We want to do the same, and that’s why we’ve opened a Foodbank as part of the Trussell Trust. The Trussell Trust is working to combat poverty and hunger across the UK. Our aim is to show God’s love in action for those that are struggling or in poverty. Not only do we provide food parcels, but offer signposting and a listening ear. Our project is inclusive and is open to clients of all backgrounds, faith and nationality. Anyone can find themselves at crisis point for a number of different reasons. In order to provide the most appropriate help for the circumstances of any situation, Foodbank works with local referral agencies. If they feel you are struggling to put food on the table, they will issue you with a foodbank voucher. Currently vouchers are issued on Hampton from Hampton Vale Pre School, Hampton Vale Primary School, and Hampton College Primary Phase. Vouchers can also be obtained from Peterborough City from the Job Centre, Citizens Advice Bureau and Aspire. From September, vouchers will be available from the office of CSK Church on Monday or Thursday mornings between 9:30am and Noon, once we have people trained to make the referrals. When you visit a referral agency they will take some basic details from you to complete the voucher. This will help them to identify the cause of your crisis and offer practical guidance. It also means we are then able to prepare suitable emergency food for the right number of people. Once you have been issued with a voucher, you can exchange this for a minimum of three days of emergency food at any foodbank centre. The foodbank centre in CSK Church is now open every Thursday evening between 7pm and 9pm to serve Hampton and the wider area of Peterborough. In 2015/16, The Trussell Trust’s Foodbank Network provided 1,109,309 three-day emergency food supplies and support to UK people in crisis. Of these, over 400,000 went to children. To find out more about The Trussell Trust visit www.trusselltrust.org. This is what one foodbank user said: “The foodbank was there when we really needed it, it was an absolute lifeline.” Foodbank is reliant on donations of both food and money. If you would like to find out how you might be able to help support the work of Foodbank at CSK Church, call in one Thursday evening and speak to one of the volunteers. Every Blessing, Sylvia

CONSUMER ADVICE by Eileen Le Voi

Stay safe this BBQ season A great excuse for a spot of alfresco dining with family and friends, the popular social gathering offers the chance for the fellas to show off their grill skills, the ladies to rustle up a tasty summer punch and the kids to have endless fun. If this sounds like your ideal BBQ (and what’s not to love?) then don’t allow anything to spoil it. The sad fact is that barbecues are involved in many hundreds of accidents that occur in the garden each year. Last time figures were collected through the Home and Leisure Accident Surveillance System (HASS/LASS) in 2002, an estimated 1,800 people visited A&E in the UK having had an accident involving a barbecue. The most common types of barbecue-related accidents as shown by the HASS/LASS figures were: • Burn/scald/other injury related to fire or flame - 800 • Cut/tear by sharp edges - 200. The vast majority of barbecue accidents (1,400) happened in a home setting. Some of the accidents lead to very serious burns, usually as a result of using an accelerant such as petrol to light the fuel.

Summer’s here – and whatever the weather, us Brits love our barbeques!

However, planning ahead and following some simple safety tips will ensure you BBQ is fun-filled and not a flaming failure. • Keep your barbecues away from flammable garden furniture such as wooden or plastic chairs. • Move your barbecue away from sheds, fences, overhanging branches and foliage and never light it in an enclosed space. • Never leave a barbecue unattended. • Never let children too close to the barbecue. • Use only recognised firelighters or starter fuels on charcoal barbecues. • If you’re a gas barbecue user, ensure the tap is off before changing the cylinder. • When choosing a barbeque, stability is essential - ensure the one you choose is strong and sturdy. • Check your barbecue is in good condition (particularly if you have not used it for some time) and look for loose or damaged parts that may need adjustment or repair. To protect you, family and your home, it is advisable to have working fire alarms in your property and to generally be fire-safety savvy. Safe Local Trades currently has an expert

SPORT

Hampton Cricket Club Great big changes have been taking place at Hampton CC over recent months, and it is a very exciting time to be part of the club. Our newly re-purposed clubhouse is coming along nicely and is really starting to make the ground look like a true home for cricket. Our Under 9’s team has begun playing competitive cricket and it is a fantastic site to see them having so much fun and really putting the effort in. The experience has been a very positive one so far and hopefully it will foster a lifelong love of the game. Big news of late has been the decision by our Chairman, Paul Garrett, to stand down after nearly 5 years at the helm. His contribution to the club has been monumental and will be sorely missed. He will still be a presence at the club, but will now be focussing his energy on piling on the runs. With the summer hopefully starting to make for some better weekend weather, why not take the opportunity to come down to the ground to meet some club members, enjoy the ample space we have to stroll, play or picnic in the sunshine, all with the glorious backdrop of cricket to savour.

The HCSA centre (Beaumont Way) which is run by the Hampton Community Sports Association charity, is undergoing a rebranding exercise over the coming months and although the charity is retaining its name the centre itself will be having a new identity as part of some improvements being made to the facilities. Details of which will be published exclusively in future issues of the Hampton Gazette.

COMMUNITY

Happy Birthday Hempsted United! As the football season drew to a close, it was time to celebrate everyone’s efforts for the club over the last 12 months but this one was rather special as it was also the club’s first birthday! Players, family and friends gathered at Beaumont Way to enjoy the club’s inaugural Awards Presentation which nicely coincided with England’s first game in the Euros. Amongst other gifts to administrators there were a number of awards handed out to all the players for their efforts over the season and some individual awards were also handed out: Callum B. Rayment [Managers Player of the Year], Tinashe Mutizwa [Supporters Player & Golden Boot winner] and Jay Neame [Players Player]. A raffle was also held with one lucky winner scooping a free holiday! EAT IN OR TAKEWAY

Review

Wok & Eat is located on Columbus Road in Hempsted, Peterborough and opened on 15 April this year. Unlike many Asian cuisine takeaways, Wok & Eat is also a café, with a sleek, modern design and an open kitchen so you can see your food being made. Pricewise, this restaurant is gentle on your bank account. I ordered chilli beef with rice which costs £5.49 with a drink included and the portions are massive, I couldn’t finish it. On top of this, the service is amazing. I’ve ordered both delivery and eat-in service. The eat-in services was no more than five minutes, tops! The takeaway service is even better; it took just 10 minutes for my order to be ready which is ridiculously quick in comparison to similar takeaways where I’ve waited over an hour. The food is fresh, something which shows in the taste. With dishes including duck, pork, chicken, beef, seafood and vegetarian there is something suitable for everyone’s taste. It’s amazing! If you’re a lover of Chinese food then head down to 3 Columbus Road, Hempsted, Peterborough PE7 0LD or call 01733 555541 to order or ask for more information!

GARDEN VIEW

Garden ornaments

By Rachel Leverton

Ornaments polarise gardeners. They’re a love ‘em or hate ‘em subject.

I

fell firmly into the hate ‘em category. I thought they had a place in big country gardens but looked slightly tacky in suburbia. This antipathy may date back to my childhood and Mrs. Frost, our elderly neighbour, who had a front garden stuffed to the brim with gnomes, windmills and concrete toadstools. If our ball ever strayed into this shrine to kitsch she’d burst from her house with a banshee-like scream, brandishing a broom at us. Somewhere along the way though I’ve mellowed. As I’ve studied show gardens and magazines I’ve realised that ornaments have a definite place in a garden as long as two important considerations are met: Context The ornaments complement the style of the garden. Classical statuary doesn’t work in contemporary spaces, while traditional gardens might need to avoid stainless steel or modern, abstract sculptures.

22

Size Ornaments should be an appropriate size for the setting. Rules are there to be broken of course and whatever your garden type or size the ornament you choose should be special to you. My father had a grumpy gargoylelike creature, set among ferns at the bottom of his patch. It made everyone who saw it smile in recognition of my dad’s own avuncular manner. A girly friend of mine has a series of small bronze faeries set around her tiny plot, which are perfectly in tune with her personality. I favour natural materials myself but several years ago I purchased beautiful and rather elegant heron created from recycled metal. I adore it because it reflects both my love of birds and my passion for recycling. It stands near a boulder fountain and I occasionally brandish a broomstick at my sons when their football strays too near...

Ornament Ideas… ...not a gnome in sight! To set off ornamental grasses try ceramic balls in vivid blues and greens set among cobbles. For minimalist contemporary plots, mirrored columns and pyramids look striking. Classical statuary and urns look best in more formal, traditional settings. They are best made from marble or stone. Resin copies can look tacky. Don’t be frightened to show your sense of humour. Quirky can look brilliant in the right setting. Sculptor Dennis Fairweather’s best seller is a stone face and hands which emerge from a tub of water as if the figure had just been for a dip! Natural materials can be a good starting point for garden ornament novices. Balls and sculptures made from willow are subtle and elegant additions to any garden.

Your guide to

Living in Hampton

In association with O&H Hampton

BATTY NEW ARRIVALS! The Hamptons gained a subterranean housing estate, three new hotels and a bunch of batty new arrivals in June.

B

ut no-one’s complaining, because the new ‘dwellings’ are all tailor-made habitats to swell the Hamptons’ population of animal residents. And the new arrivals are, yes, genuine bats.

Badgers’ estate O&H Hampton’s project team has spent two days constructing a state-of-the-art badger sett (pictured) - complete with sleeping and breeding chambers and connecting tunnels. The deluxe new sett is part of a mitigation project to prevent disruption to wildlife as a result of the construction, later this year, of the service road for the new development. “Our ecological survey of the site found a badger sett and the assumption is that there are badgers there,” says O&H Hampton general manager Roger Tallowin. “So we are creating them a new sett close to the existing one, and the hope is they will move in.” The sett is sited and designed to recreate all the features of one the badgers would have dug for themselves. It follows Natural England guidelines and, according to the experts, it is likely that an artificial sett that is well constructed and in a suitable location will be adopted by the badgers.

Homes for voles and newts Crown Lakes Country Park has acquired three new ‘reptile hotels’ – ponds specially constructed to provide a new and improved breeding area for

aquatic wildlife, and in particular water voles and great crested newts presently living in a ditch in the area affected by road construction. Dense woodland has been removed in the country park to provide an environment more to their liking, and pathways created to encourage them to migrate to the specially created habitat. Any voles or newts that have not moved by the time construction begins will be trapped and transported to their new homes to prevent them coming to harm. Both water voles and crested newts are species under threat. Water voles were once common in Britain and inspired the character of ‘Ratty’ in Kenneth Grahame’s 1908 classic The Wind in the Willows. Since then the vole’s numbers have plummeted, and it is the UK’s fastest declining mammal. Great crested newt numbers have also declined, owing to loss of habitat, and both voles and newts are now heavily protected by law. The good news is that Hampton Nature Reserve has increased the local population of great crested newts from 24,000 to 34,000 over the last 10 years, a 40% increase. It is now Europe’s largest colony.

Bats move in And, proving that artificially habitats really do appeal to wildlife, bats have taken up residence in Crown Park’s bat cave. The Hamptons now boasts at least seven species of bat, including Bartastelle and Noctule.

WILD FACTS about the Hamptons

 At least half the land in the

Hamptons – more than 1000 acres - is green space.  More than 120,000 trees have been planted as part of the Hamptons’ development.  Hamptons’ parkland, lakes and woodland provide a habitat for a huge range of wildlife including at least 27 butterfly species, 198 species of dragonfly and 120 species of water beetle.  Rare butterflies such as the Black Hairstreak, Grizzled and Dingy Skippers can be found here.  We have a high diversity of breeding birds including Marsh Harriers, Barn Owls, Grasshopper Warblers, Skylarks, Little Ringed Plovers, Ringed Plovers, Cettis Warbler Lapwings and Kingfishers.  There are even signs of otters returning to the 7.5 km of Stanground Lode corridor.

KIDS' ESSENTIAL HOLIDAY GUIDE

Make a splash this summer

Research from thinkmoney shows that nearly half (47%) of parents can have problems arranging childcare over the summer holidays – equivalent to around 7 million people in the UK.

C

ombined with the increasing temptation to take children on holiday during term time in a bid to save money, the YMCA is today announcing an alternative option for parents with the launch of its new Holiday Club, which it hopes will provide a place for young people to enjoy themselves and build their confidence over the summer holidays. Taking place at Rutland Water Park this summer from 25 July to 2 September, the Holiday Club is being run in partnership with Anglian Water. Aimed at working families across the region with children aged 7-14, there will be a wide variety of activities on offer at Rutland Water Park, the perfect location to entertain young people over the summer! From watersports, den-building and mini golf to a cycle safari, climbing and Bugtopia sessions, qualified instructors and leaders will be on hand to

provide endless fun for young people in attendance. Jonathan Martin, CEO of the YMCA Cambridgeshire & Peterborough commented: “At the YMCA, we are committed to supporting and inspiring the young people across our region to create communities where they can truly belong, contribute and thrive. Holiday Clubs are continually growing in popularity, and we hope that our new Holiday Club will introduce children to an exciting adventure this summer and build their confidence and independence as a result. Our programme allows for a wide variety of activities to keep your children entertained this summer, and we hope to welcome a lot of young people to what is our first year putting this sort of initiative on.” Jake Williams, Head of Parks and Conservation at Anglian Water added: “We’re delighted to be partnering with the YMCA in

Into the Wild

this new venture in order to provide a safe, fun place for young people to spend their summer holiday this year. We hope this will be the start of many summers to come, and look forward to welcoming lots of children to our excellent facilities at Rutland Water Park.” Prices start from just £40 per child per day (including lunch), with discounts available for sibling attendance. All surplus profit from the Holiday Club will be used to increase YMCA support work across the region. Places at the Holiday Club are limited to a maximum of 60 young people per day, and bookings are now being taking on a first come, first served basis. Bookings can be made per individual day, or per week, offering flexibility for families across the region. Please visit the website for more information: theymca.org.uk/local-events/holiday-club/

Get back to nature with a weekend survival course!

If you’re looking to unleash your inner Bear Grylls, or just get back to nature, a survival course may be the answer. You could throw yourself in at the deep-end by jetting off to the wilds of Zimbabwe, or the hot sands of the Sahara. Or you could ease yourself in gently, with a weekend survival course right here in the UK. Weekend activities differ depending on the course you choose, but you’ll likely end up learning to build a fire, find food and create a shelter. You could also find yourself mastering other skills, such as making traps and snares, preparing game, or wood carving. The Survival Schools in Devon and Staffordshire offer a choice of several weekend courses. You could craft traditional weapons and tools, including bows and arrows, or find out how to track animals in the wild, for example. If you fancy getting back to nature with the family, you could try the Family Bushcraft & Canoe Overnighter at The World of Bushcraft Centre in Bedford. Suitable for age eight and over, the experience includes learning to paddle a canoe down the gently flowing River Ouse. You’ll set up camp in the woods for the evening (using a canvas bell tent), learn how to light a fire with a bow drill, and make a fixed blade knife, amongst other activities. Ray Mears Bushcraft also offers weekend experiences for families. From building shelters, to sharing stories round the campfire, it’s a great way

to switch off from technology and reconnect with your family. Other two day experiences include a weekend trip learning how to navigate through UK woodlands. Wildwood Bushcraft runs survival weekends in Scotland and Surrey, with activities such as fire lighting, foraging and building shelters. If you love wandering through the woods, but don’t fancy sleeping in them, some centres also offer half day activities, which don’t involve camping out. You could learn to forage for wild food with Woodland Ways for example, learning about different types of edible plants and fungi, and how to gather and cook them. Most survival courses don’t need you to bring any specialist equipment, but some are self-catering and you will need suitable clothing and a few essentials, such as a sleeping bag, reusable water bottle and torch. You should receive a list of any kit that’s required when you book, but if not, do ask. Your team members may not be too happy if you forget your toothbrush…

There are several survival centres a round the UK, including: Survival School: www.survivalschool.co.uk Woodland Ways: www.woodland-ways.co.uk Ray Mears Bushcraft: www.raymears.com Wildwood Bushcraft: www.wildwoodbushcraft.com

Vivacity announces FREE SWIMMING for all children under 5 in Peterborough Vivacity has announced the expansion of their free swimming initiative to include all children under 5 years old across all of its pools in the city.

B

y offering free swimming to youngsters, Vivacity hopes to foster water confidence and a love of swimming from an early age, not to mention encourage parents to swim more often. Jon Marsden, Director of Sport & Healthy Living at Vivacity commented: “We already offer free swimming outside of lessons to children enrolled in our Swim Academy but we are delighted to now widen this to all children under 5. According to the Amateur Swimming Association, 1 in 5 adults in the UK is unable to swim, and we are committed to supporting children learning to swim at an early age so that they can keep swimming into adult life. We want to encourage all children to be safe in-andaround the water and enjoy the many water based activities available. “As a charity, Vivacity is committed to ploughing every penny spent at its sporting facilities, libraries, museums, theatres or at Vivacity events back into the provision and improvement of Cultural and Leisure services. Our free swimming initiative is one such improvement along with cultural offerings such as the Children’s Reading Development Programme which is set to reach 13,500 children this year.” Already taking advantage of this at the Regional Pool is Wendy Freeman from Yaxley whose son Dylan (3) swims once a week. Wendy was pleasantly surprised to find that her son could swim for free: “Free swimming for Dylan will definitely encourage me to bring him more often. It can get expensive to come regularly so it’s great to be able to save some money doing something that he loves.” For more information about free swimming for the under 5s or Vivacity’s wider services then please visit VivacityPeterborough.co.uk. BUSINESS FOCUS

New Kumon study centre opens in Hampton

The new Kumon Hampton Study Centre has opened, and will offer Kumon’s unique maths and English programmes to children of all ages and abilities.

E

stablished for over 50 years, the programmes enable children to develop their study skills and confidently tackle advanced work. Through the maths and English programmes, Kumon nurtures children’s independent study skills, so they can apply this approach to all subjects. Kumon develops children through the acquisition of independent learning skills, rather than teaching in the conventional sense. Children will therefore be equipped with the ability to learn for themselves so they do not become

dependent on – or limited by – the skills and knowledge of others. My name is Tayo Agboola, I am the instructor at the new study centre. Having been a Kumon parent for many years and seen the benefits my children gained from the programme, I am delighted to have the opportunity to share my experience of Kumon with the children and families of Hampton. I believe that every child has the ability to reach their full potential. I am thrilled to be part of a team that can help enable this and help provide children a sense of achievement and satisfaction as they learn. The Hampton Study Centre is located at the CSK Church, Silver Hill, Hampton. Classes running on Wednesdays 3.30 – 6.00 and Saturdays 9.30 – 12.00

Hampton College

Vale Primary

Good luck to all Hampton College students in the forthcoming examinations - It has already been a busy time in all phases for national tests and examinations, keep going and the very best of luck!

An incredibly busy month at Hampton Vale Primary School has seen a wide range of exciting special events designed to enhance the children’s learning and personal development. Although bad weather led to the cancellation of sports day this year, children have also continued to enjoy sporting success.

French Spelling Bee - Félicitations to two of our students who competed in the regional final of the Foreign (French) Language Spelling Bee. The Year 7 students ranked amongst the 116 finalists from the East of England out of a total 10,836 students who took part in the competition. The summer term has been a busy one as usual in terms of sporting activities, with the completion of football, rowing and netball leagues, the start of summer activities such as cricket, rounders, athletics and then the development of two satellite clubs; with Archway Table Tennis Club and Thorpe Ventures running a cycling club. We were so privileged and very lucky

to get an elite athlete visit HC. Fran Williamson, who is a retired Paralympic swimmer, was onsite to help plan a PE day later in the year which she will be leading. Many staff and students got the opportunity to spend some quality time with her – what an absolute inspiration!! Last week was national Young Carer’s week which we celebrated with lots of events running throughout the week – a hugely inspirational group of students. Finally, last term the Geography Department took 20 students to Iceland, on the first ever Hampton College field trip to the island – what an incredible adventure they had!

More than 130 children in Years Four and Five have taken part in residential visits; the staff at the activity centre used by Year Five reported that they were the most polite and enthusiastic group with whom they had worked. Year Five children have also taken part in more outdoor activities at Nene Park Academy’s Festival of Learning and found out more about Viking invasions in the Peterborough Heritage Festival. Also in Year Four, children dressed as ancient Greeks for an experience day that focused on the Peloponnesian Wars between Athens and Sparta. Children in Years Three and Six found out more about food sources when they visited the annual Food and Farming Festival at the Showground; in school, Year Six children were busy rehearsing and presenting for parents and carers their version of “The Lion King” musical. Meanwhile, dads and special people joined Reception children to build dens and spend some learning time together ahead of Fathers’ Day. As the children completed their theme about transport, a drive-in cinema was set up, to which they took sit-in cars that they had designed and built. As the school year draws to an end, staff and children are looking forward to more exciting events, including the summer concert, the annual celebration evening, a Year Six residential visit and events to say farewell and good luck to the Year Six leavers.

Hampton Pre-school

Hargate Primary

Little Acorn

This term at Vale Community pre-school the children are exploring different holiday destinations around the world.

Well it’s been another busy school year and we are almost at the end of our summer term.

Our new baby unit has been open now for a couple of months and all the babies are very happy in their new environment.

As part of our topic the children will sample delicious food from around the globe, dressing up in clothing appropriate for different climates, and try out lots of new sports associated with the countries we will be exploring. Now that the weather is getting better our small group P.E Sessions have started again, with the help of our Key Sports coach Mr Seb! The children get to take part in lots of fun activities that help to develop their balance, co-ordination and gross motor skills. Vale Community Pre-school is Open 8:45-11:45 Monday – Friday term time only, for children age 2 years and over. For more information about our Pre-school, Email Nicole or Cheryl: valepre-school@hotmail.co.uk

We have enjoyed our sports days, trips to London Zoo and Rutland Water, the Cresset Dance Festival, a performance from Espirito Olympic Brazil and a year 6 Residential! In sports news, well done to our Swimming team who were winners at a recent Swimming Gala and well done to our football team who came 5th out of all the Peterborough schools in the recent finals! In other news, the children have once again been working hard on their films for the Peterborough Film Awards. Our recent Science week was a great success. The week was packed full of interesting activities with the children enjoying a visit to our Forest School and Professor Brainstorm who wowed the children with his amazing experiments!. Thank you to Mrs Mear and Mr Colley for arranging the week. Our Year 6 Residential took place at the end of May this year when 78 excited children travelled with members of staff to Kingswood Colomendy in North Wales. The children had a fantastic week jam packed with activities. They tried their hand at caving, the 3G swing and the leap of faith. Mr Milner said that the team work was excellent throughout the week and he was really proud of the children’s approach to all of the activities – they really rose to the challenge. Well done to all and thank you to all the staff who accompanied them. And finally, the children enjoyed celebrating the Queen’s 90th Birthday with our very own tea party - it was a lovely afternoon!

We would like to say a big thank you to everybody for their support. At Little Acorns we are in the process of the garden having a makeover. The children have really enjoyed watching the builders and the diggers in the garden as the transformation is taking place. They have been commenting on the changes and seem very excited to get outside and explore the new toys and facilities. Last month the parents at Little Acorns have had the opportunity to come in and spend some time with their child at nursery and take part in some activities. The rose room and pre-school have been making octopuses. We still have some spaces available to start at Little Acorns Day Nursery and Montessori school in September For more information please contact us on 01733 244000 or email us on littleacorns.daynursery@yahoo.co.uk

Lifestyle transformation ...

HEALTH & BEAUTY

A mum of one has transformed her body and lifestyle after struggling to lose the weight she gained during pregnancy. Now nearly four stone lighter, Nat Fryer is facing a slimmer and brighter future. The 28 year old mum from Hampton, Peterborough reached breaking point in August 2015 when her son was 18 months. “I used to eat three or four ice creams a night and think it was normal! I felt huge; I hated my body and the way it looked but I couldn’t see a light at the end of the tunnel. I felt destined to be overweight.” Nat recalled how she had no confidence or energy and used to go from desk to sofa and drive between. Evenings were for sitting down, gorging on high calorie treats, hating how she looked and felt and knew something had to change, not just her diet but her lifestyle. “I looked down and hated the spare tyre round my middle; I didn’t think I’d ever be slim. I hated the very sight of myself.” After dabbling in various faddy diets Nat found her local group online. “I was so scared – part of me didn’t even plan to stay, I just went to see what it was about! My consultant was amazing, he came over and chatted away, instantly making me feel more comfortable.” Nat told me how she found new friends and re-discovered lost ones. “The

group atmosphere is so supportive… There’s never any judgement, we’re all in it together and know how each other feel. It quickly became a part of my life; it was my ‘me’ time. I couldn’t wait to go to group each week!” In her first week Nat lost 6 ½ pounds and a stone in 6 weeks – She recalled “I’d not been hungry once! I’d learned new recipes and ate real food! I couldn’t believe that I could still eat curry’s, fry up’s and burgers and lose weight just by making small changes! Why hadn’t I done this before?!” Nat originally set a target of losing 2.5 stone, but after discovering how easy it was she went on to lose another stone to reach her target weight in February this year. Nat also joined her local gym where she started fitness classes 3 times a week. Before finding her group, Nat used to go for quick, convenient food; takeaways were her go to evening meal. Now, she’s found a new passion for cooking, she told me how she has a fried breakfast every Friday with her son; “The whole family eat the same food together and my son loves to help me prepare it.” Nat still enjoys ice creams in the

evening, or a few treats like she used to, but she’s learnt how to stay in control – Nothing is forbidden. Now, a target member and feeling amazing Nat loves her new found confidence. “I never thought I’d love what I see when I look in the mirror! I can go shopping and find clothes that fit me and look good!” Nat’s new lifestyle has impacted her family through teaching them healthy eating and exercising regularly. Some of her closest family and friends have been inspired to lose weight themselves by seeing Nat’s achievements. Nat’s journey has had such an impact on her life that she now wants to help others shed the misery of being overweight and feel amazing about themselves.

HEALTH & BEAUTY

Is your body ready for the holiday season?!

The Clean 9 Program can help you jumpstart your journey to a slimmer, healthier you. For those of you who have never heard of Forever Living, it is an all-natural health and wellbeing company that predominantly targets weightloss. Because Forever Living is an MLM Company (multi-level marketing) it is very difficult to find a review online that is unbiased. So I am writing you an honest opinion of the Clean 9 Detox. The detox lasts for nine days and it is the perfect way to kick start a diet as it requires calorie control as well as regular exercising. This nine day cleanse isn’t the cheapest, however you definitely get what you pay for. The contents of the box include: two 1 litre bottles of aloe vera gel, a pouch of Forever Lite Ultra shake (you can choose either chocolate or vanilla flavour upon purchasing), three supplements – one including fibre, a bottle for your shakes, a measuring tape and a book to keep track of how you’re doing. The aim of the C9 is to detox your body, make you feel healthier and even drop a few pounds in the process. I will tell you my experience. I did the C9 in August 2015, my starting weight was 10st and 6lbs, at the end of the nine days however I was 9st and 8lbs! So a massive weight loss for me. I will admit the first few days I was very sluggish, tired and got the occasional headache however by day three I felt much better. As the days progressed I felt really good about myself, physically and mentally. On top of this, I found waking up early was easier (it takes me forever to wake up!) and I didn’t feel like I needed caffeine to get through the day.

Lose weight and inches with a detox body cleanse Look better and feel great in just nine days with this expertlydevised cleansing plan. Designed to kick-start the F.I.T. programme, cleanse your body and adjust your mindset. C9 provides the perfect starting point for transforming your diet and fitness habits. Based around Forever’s bestselling Aloe Vera Gel drink, this nutritionally-balanced programme will allow you to see real results in just nine days. "I did the C9 detox diet and absolutely loved it. After the over indulgence of Christmas my eating habits just got worse so I decided to do the C9 cleanse to detox but also to re think my eating habits. By day 3 I had a surge of energy and my skin looked and felt better. It’s very easy to follow and helped me eat healthily again. I was amazed to have lost 10lbs by the end of it but more importantly I felt detoxed! I still drink the Aloe Vera gel as the health benefits are immense. I have since had friends who have gone on to do the C9 and have loved it as well." A.Lewis, Hampton Vale

Answer If you are replacing your previous main residence within three years then you will not be liable to the additional 3% stamp duty land tax (SDLT), even though you own other residential properties.

It is not ordinarily used by one of them to the exclusion of others; d. Any private use by an employee is merely incidental to their business use of it; and e. It is not normally kept overnight on or near the residence of any of the employees unless it is kept on premises occupied by the provider of the car. Employers need to be able to demonstrate that the conditions for the car or van to be a pool vehicle have been met.
