Alternatively you can request the form from info@ohhampton.co.uk . You’ll find details of how to send in your entry on the form. The competition runs from July 1 – 31 August so there’s plenty of time to try and capture your Hampton Summer Holiday. It goes without saying (we hope!) that your pictures need to be taken within Hampton – the Hampton Parish Council area – which we’ll stretch to include Crown Lakes Country Park. We’re hoping for lots of pictures showing people, but please make sure you have permission from any family members or friends who feature in your shots. And we’re also hoping to use some of your pictures – with full credit given of course – to liven up the photo galleries on our website and Flickr pages - so by entering you’ll be giving us permission to do so. Over three thousand years ago the Israelites left Egypt and wandered around in the wilderness for forty years before they crossed over the river Jordan to enter the land that God had promised them, the land of Canaan. CSK have been wandering around Hampton for fifteen years meeting in various locations, most recently in Hampton Vale Primary School, to whom we are very grateful or allowing us to meet in their building, as we are to all who have welcomed us over the fifteen years. July 2014 CSK finally enter our own promised land as we begin meeting in our new church building every Sunday morning at 10am. The building won’t be fully fitted out for a few more months, but we will have chairs and a sound and multi-media system in the main worship space. We are excited as we look forward to all the plans God has for us and for our community in our promised land. We’ve recently learnt a new song at CSK that begins with the words, “Let us build a house where love can dwell”, and ends with “All are welcome in this place.”

Wow!

Thank you so much to everyone who came along to our Summer Fete last month. We had a great response once again and we really appreciate your continued support. We were particularly lucky with the weather, on what was supposed to be a very soggy weekend, which allowed us to enjoy the Crosskey Clog dancers in the sunshine. Our whole cake stall was also a winner with over 20 whole cakes, tea loaves and tarts. We sold them all! We had some wonderful craft stalls!

We also had a good number of entries into our colouring competition with the winners receiving Tesco Gift cards (kindly donated by Tesco) and Craft activity packs. Well Done to our winners Oliver, Millie, Toby and Rachel!

Our prayer is that everyone who visits us in our new church building will indeed find a church family who are sharing the love of God and welcome all. Do come along and join with us any Sunday morning. Every blessing,

Sy lvi a We welcomed more guests to our June meeting and enjoyed making some very pretty teacup flower arrangements. They were so simple that it is something we will all try again at home. You only needed a a few flowers, a bit of greenery and some oasis and in a gorgeous vintage tea cup it looked a million dollars! If you’ve not tried it before, google it and give it a go. For info, we have our own facebook page under “The Hampton Womens Institute”. So, ladies, please take a look & then come and check us out!

The majority of us have experienced nuisance unsolicited calls and, as a result of pressure being put on the Government by consumer groups, thankfully they have now launched a new Action Plan to tackle this menace which includes the following:1: The Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) will now be able to take action against calls that are classed as ‘annoyance’ rather than ‘substantial distress’; this means far more calls will be covered. 2. Ofcom and the ICO will share information on rogue companies, leading to more fines. 3. The Ministry of Justice are currently consulting on whether PPI cold callers should face fines of up to 20% of their annual turnover. 4. The Government has asked Richard Lloyd, Executive Director of Which? (the consumer champion), to lead a task force reviewing how people consent to receiving marketing calls.

Advice To avoid unsolicited telephone calls, members of the public are encouraged to remove their personal details from the public arena. The following will help:Register free with the Telephone Preference Service (TPS) - Once registration is complete telemarketers are legally bound not to call you. Registration takes about a month to become effective and can be made online at www.tpsonline.org.uk or via telephone on 0845 070 0707. Electoral Registers - Each year, electoral registration forms are sent to all homes in the UK. There is a legal requirement to complete these forms, which list all of the people living at your address on 15 October. A new electoral register is published on 01 December each year. The electoral register is a list of the names and addresses of everyone who is eligible to vote. There are two versions of the electoral register:• A FULL REGISTER is used for elections, preventing and detecting crime, and checking applications for loan or credit agreements • the EDITED REGISTER is available for general sale and can be used for any purpose The EDITED REGISTER can be bought by any person, company or organisation and can be used for commercial activities such as marketing. To opt out of having your details appear on the EDITED REGISTER you should enter a tick in the ‘Edited Register’ box on the form.

Yoga Birth After the birth of her third child in 2004 Sharon Budworth decided to immerse herself in the world of birth and babies. Sharon trained as a Birth and Postnatal Doula and has attended over 30 births to date. In 2005 she embarked on a wonderful journey with YogaBirth and in 2007 after qualifying as a YogaBirth Teacher she began teaching a regular weekly class in Cambridge, St Ives and Peterborough. YogaBirth classes offer a safe, effective and integrated form of yoga, carefully adapted for you to practice from fourteen weeks of pregnancy up to the birth of your baby. Our classes are infused with preparation for labour and birth, incorporating intelligent, gravity-assisting positions and movements. These provide great comfort, keep the baby well-oxygenated, and potentially make birth easier, faster and uncomplicated. The breathing you will learn in class is specifically designed for labour and birth, which we call hypnobreathing. After each class we chat over tea, and often mothers return to introduce their new babies and to share and celebrate their birth experiences. Many longlasting friendships begin at YogaBirth classes. Sharon is starting a “new” class in Yaxley. Thursdays 7.00pm – 9.00pm please visit www.yogabirthcambridge.co.uk for more information.

Beijing Rendezvous Located at Napier Place, Orton Wistow, the Beijing Rendezvous serves an authentic Cantonese buffet in a spacious comfortable environment. The restaurant has been established for 25 years and has recently changed the menu to a buffet style. The restaurant seats 80 people and can be hired out for functions. It also offers a bar serving a selection of wines, champagnes, beers and ciders. The buffet is delicious and starters include sweetcorn and hot and sour soup, crispy wontons, chicken balls, ribs, prawn toast, springs rolls, pork dumplings etc. The best bit is that you can literally eat as many starters as you like and the staff are very accommodating, constantly bringing out dishes so there is never any waiting around for food or any empty dishes at the cart. Moving on to the mains, you will be spoilt for choice with a great selection of beef dishes including fruity beef and black bean beef. A couple of prawn dishes, plenty of chicken dishes and a good selection of vegetarian dishes including vegetable noodles. Overall, the Beijing is definitely worth a try, the price is very competitive and the food of an excellent standard. Tea and coffee with a selection of desserts are also available after the meal.

Some feedback from my classes: “It was so lovely to come back to class and see you again, you’ve had such an impact on not only my life but the beginning of my babies lives, I’ll always be very grateful. (L. Mum of four, 3 Yogabirth babies!)” “It was the most relaxing time I had at Sharon’s yoga class during my pregnancy. I liked the time after class too as Sharon gave us more knowledge about birth. It was very useful. (J, Cambridge)” “I attended Yoga Birth during both my 2 pregnancies. Yoga Birth helped me understand the stages of labour so I wasn’t shocked or surprised by what happened. It helped me to understand what I could do to help myself during the labour. And when I had a very quick labour with my second child and didn’t have time to get to the midwife unit as planned, it helped me to stay calm and give birth at home with a paramedic present who had only attended one birth previously. Peterborough Big Sing As Peterborough Young Singers’ move in to their 21st year they continue to delivery so much for the wider city community. From September 2013 they have performed in two benefit concerts for Shine, the UK charity looking after people suffering from Spina Bifida and Hydrocephalus, and continue to develop strong relationships with local schools helping to deliver on the council’s promise to improve arts provision across the city.

The choir welcome new members throughout the year at their rehearsal base, East Community Centre, Padholme Road, PE1 5EN. Each young person’s singing education is supported by the accomplished professional musician, Matt Smith, with an emphasis placed on everyone having fun. The organising committee are formed from a group of dedicated parents who are all CRB checked and provided with first aid training; which acts to support the health and safety cover already provided at East Community Centre. Life long friendships are developed between the choir members; and as well as the rehearsal times where the young people meet up Peterborough Young Singers offer a thank you to all the hard work put in during each term through the organisation of social events such as bowling, ice staking and a summer BBQ. Peterborough Young Singers is a wonderful place for your child to spend a Saturday morning. Two choirs are run by the charity; the first, a Junior Choir, which takes children between the ages of 7 and 13, rehearses between 9.00am and 10.30am. The Senior Choir, receiving young people between the ages of 13 and 21, rehearses between 9.30am and 11.30am. The choir are seeking 50 young people for a project running through the autumn term and registration for this event will take place on the first Saturday of the 2014/15 school year, September 6th. Further information will be available towards the end of June on both the choir’s website and Facebook page. Peterborough Young Singers’ last exciting production of this academic year is ‘The Peterborough Big Sing 2014’ a mass choral event being jointly promoted by Peterborough Young Singers and City of Peterborough Youth Ensemble. The workshops are underway with the final concert performance taking place at KingsGate Conference Centre on Saturday 12th July. We invite all the readers of this gazette to come along and support the young people taking part.

The Government is reportedly considering using measures which would mean adults could face prosecution in relation to emotional cruelty against children. Proposals referred to as “Cinderella’s Law” have been put forward to the change to be introduced in England and Wales, with those convicted of offences potentially facing similar sentences to those who have subjected young people to physical abuse.

Hampton News

Government considering ‘Cinderella’s Law’ on emotional neglect

The Brownies taking over the meeting and playing a game that they have created

Discussions around the introduction of emotional neglect laws come following a three year campaign by charity Action for Children, which stated the current definition of child neglect was still based on regulations introduced more than 80 years ago. Sir Tony Hawkhead, Chief Executive of Action for Children described the proposals as a “monumental step forward”.

For more information about Brownies www.girlguiding.org.uk/interested.

He added “we are one of the last countries in the western world to recognise all forms of child abuse as a crime. Years of campaigning have been rewarded, the Government has listened and this law will change lives”.

Celebrating 100 years of Brownies

Whilst definitions around the issues of abuse have always predominantly been focused on physical harm, we have seen in numerous cases the devastating psychological effects that neglect and abuse have on victims. In many cases, people who have faced such issues need long term counselling and support to get anywhere close to coming to terms with what they have been through.

To celebrate 100 years of Brownies, this term 1st and 2nd Hampton Brownies have been working towards The Big Brownie Birthday Challenge Badge.

Such issues often go on to affect victims for their entire lives. It is undoubtedly time for the seriousness of emotional and psychological abuse to be recognised in the eyes of the law, and we are hopeful that the Government work quickly to ensure that everything possible is done to safeguard children from any form of harm.

The girls chose most of the activities themselves. Surprisingly the girls from both units chose the same activity, ” Take over the Brownie meeting”.

Belinda Smith and her associate Michele Fielding are trained collaborative lawyers and members of the local group based in Peterborough. Visit www.pcflg.co.uk for details of all the qualified collaborative lawyers in the area and ring Belinda on 01733 267414 if you would like more information.

In their sixes, the girls planned the activity that they wanted to run; these included crafts, games, apple and grape bobbing, bingo, and an “I’m A Brownie, Get Me Out Of Here!” activity. Other activities that the girls selected included making fake wounds and learning how to treat them, inviting Rainbows to Brownies, learning Semaphore and cracking codes, dragon boat racing and turning scrap into art!

It’s a mys-tree! by Lakota (Lover of Nature)

A recent newspaper article intrigued me. The headline was rather harshly phrased, I thought: ‘Nature dunces! 98% can’t name five common trees’. The article went on to say that only one in fifty people were able to identify five tree varieties. This they concluded was a sign of modern society’s separation from nature. It stated that over 55s were generally better than younger people and that women were better than men. Alan Titchmarsh was wheeled in for a comment. He said: ‘It is worrying that the next generation is not being awakened to the delights of the great outdoors – once common knowledge but now a mystery to millions more familiar with Facebook and Twitter.’ He was concerned that without this knowledge people will not be bothered about conserving and caring for the natural life around them. Even the editor of Gardeners’ World magazine feels that we are losing touch with nature. Hopefully, the majority of residents do appreciate the park-like/ woodland feel that Hampton offers, with this being one of the reasons why we have chosen to live here.

Can you identify the five common trees in the survey?

As far as naming trees is concerned, though, perhaps you could challenge yourself to see if you can recognise the five common trees. I believe that most, if not all, pictured here, can be found around Hampton. The percentage of people, in the newspaper article, who could recognise them was as follows: Oak (91%), Beech (52%), Ash (21%), Lime (16%) and Birch (15%).

Hampton Schools

Hampton Hargate Primary School

Hampton College (Primary Phase) As the end of the school year is fast approaching we are all excited by our last half term in school and the fun that is yet to happen. Year 1 have been proudly celebrating their achievements with their parents this term, as both classes have performed their class assembly. The children in Owls class wowed their mums and dads with their own adaptation of “Handa’s Surprise” which was retitled “Percy’s Surprise” to follow our “Percy the Park Keeper” theme in KS1. Miss Light and Mrs Imran did a fantastic job of coaching the children in speaking, acting and singing and their performance was absolutely splendid. Meanwhile our Badgers class have impressed their parents with a fantastic performance of “Circle of Life” as part of their African themed assembly. The children played drums and maracas to accompany Mrs Benyon (one of our secondary phase music teachers) and sang beautifully. There was also a presentation of African facts, maths taught by the year 1 children and a song about the days of the week. Paradoxically the sunshine has also brought out the icy talent in our reception children filmed and made the best “Frozen” film ever. Their acting, singing, dancing and stunt work was an absolute joy to watch and the children who edited the film were extremely delighted with their finished result, which we shared with our reception parents before morning registration. With our Father’s Day event and Sports Day around the corner, we are also extremely excited about welcoming our parents into school to participate with their children and have fun too. Finally, this half term sees the induction of our new reception children who will be starting school in September. We would like to welcome these children, and their parents, to Hampton College and look forward to welcoming you all to our Hampton College family.

We can’t believe another school year has nearly ended! It’s been a busy couple of months again and we’ve still got a few more events to squeeze in before the end of term such as our annual Year 6 Residential, a trip to the Zoo for Year’s 3 and 4, our Parents open afternoon and our Year 6 leaver’s assembly. Firstly some fundraising news - Well done to the all the Hampton Hargate ladies who ran the Race for Life at Burghley House at the beginning of June. They raised in excess of £500! Also, well done to Laura Shevlane and her family who ran 5K in aid of Great Ormond Street Hospital, a charity very close to their heart.

Reception children were impeccably behaved and a credit to the school.

Our Music celebration evening took place on Monday 9th June at school. The evening was a great success and provided an excellent opportunity for our children who learn instruments and attend the choir to showcase their abilities. The children had been practising hard to perfect their pieces Art news - we took part in an art and the audience enjoyed performances by competition with the other Hampton schools for the Parish council on ‘Hampton the school choir, keyboard players, violinists, brass players and ocarinas. Mr Barber our values’. The Parish council chose the winners and we are delighted to announce Keyboard Teacher who is retiring at the end of this term was thanked for his hard work that our school did really well and won and was presented with a small gift from several categories! The overall winners the school. Thank you to Mrs Hayes for were Lucy in year 6 and Abdul in year 4! organising the evening. All the children put a lot of effort in and our winners pictures are displayed in our The children have all been working hard on school hall. The winners each received an their films for the Peterborough Film Awards award and a voucher which was presented 2014. We are looking forward to see if all of to them by a member of the Parish council our hard work has paid off on 3rd July. More in our whole school assembly. Well done information to follow in next month’s edition. to everyone who took part and thank you On Thursday 5th and Friday 6th June, some to Miss Barks for organising. of our pupils spent the day working with Our Reception children enjoyed a trip the Peterborough Youth Choir and a team to Hamerton Zoo recently. During the of singing specialists to develop their vocal day they completed various activities skills. Hampton Vale Primary School Sport and PE is always high on the agenda at Hampton Vale Primary School, but now is a particularly busy time for sport on the school’s calendar. At the top of the list is the annual sports day, in which all 500-plus children at the school took part in a number of sporting challenges - for which they were able to earn points for their houses - before the more traditional sprints and relays were held. Pupils of all ages have also been representing Hampton Vale in a number of interschool competitions:

• Year Six footballers were runners-up in the Youth Dreams Project World Cup; • Year Four children took part in the Kwik Cricket inter-schools competition;

based on Africa, they performed their version of The Lion King to the rest of the school and to parents and carers. In the same week, a presentation from a representative from the Red Cross showed the children how the organisation plans and coordinates relief efforts around the globe, with a particular focus on Africa. Many of the Year Six children have also taken part in their week-long residential outdoor and adventure sports programme on the Norfolk coast. A visit to the world-renowned Royal Opera House, London, has also been a highlight for many of the children.

Elsewhere in school, the Year Three children • cross-country athletes represented the returned to their earlier theme of the Romans when they visited the Fane Road allotments school in a weekend run at Barnack. archaeological site to handle some of the artefacts Swimming, which is offered at different times that the archaeologists and volunteers had through the year for all children in Years Two to discovered there. All of the children have also spent several days Hampton College. working with the staff who will be their teachers Meanwhile, the summer term has also been when they return for the new school year in an incredibly busy time for the school’s oldest September. children in Year Six. Little Acorn Pre School Our pre-school children have been observing our resident tadpoles, and were fascinated how they grew legs and changed to frogs. As the children all seemed to enjoy this, we have ordered some caterpillars and the children will be able to watch as they grow and change. To coincide with this we will read The Hungry caterpillar and paint butterfly pictures. We have also been busy in the garden planting beetroot and runner beans. Our sunflowers have been growing well, and our older children have made a height chart so we can track their progress. We think it is important to celebrate diversity, and to teach children that we are all individuals. Therefore we planned an international week where parents from different countries came in to share a little of their culture with the children. We would like to express our thanks to all parents who kindly participated. Your guide to

Each month we’ll be partnering with O&H Hampton to focus on one or two aspects of Hampton life.

Living in Hampton

Heart, soul and satisfaction working for the Hampton community It sounds like a dream job description: hundreds of people wanted for a role that is proven to be good for your health and happiness, for self-esteem and friendships, for your cv, skills and future prospects, and where you are valued. What’s more, plenty of people on Hampton have already discovered it…becoming a volunteer in the community. From Hampton’s hugely successful football club to the smiling faces at Hampton Scouts, it is people putting something back that provides the backbone of a successful community. But the benefits are definitely two-way, according to Heather Orrell, who initially volunteered as a Sue Ryder shop assistant as a way of saying thank you for the charity’s care of her nan. She says: “I love helping out in there. It has boosted my confidence and I have met so many lovely people.” Colleague Daisy Butler agrees: “It’s really fun and it’s really helped me with self-confidence,” while assistant manager Annette Mawby speaks for the many organisations who rely on volunteers. Says Annette: “Our volunteers are the heart and soul of what we do; each and every volunteer brings with them something unique which keeps us running.” Hampton Scout Leader David Rist adds: “As well as gaining externally recognised skills and having a brilliant time, volunteering with the scouts also offers the chance to build on personal skills like teamwork, confidence and leadership. A study found that over 90% of our volunteers believe the skills and experiences they have gained have been of relevance to their working or personal lives.”

Here are just a few of the organisations currently looking for a helping hand in Hampton.

Hampton Scouts This lively bunch of 6-14 year olds has a waiting list of youngsters keen to join in everything from camps and quizzes to working for badges. But growing the club depends on having more volunteers. Explained Group Scout Leader David Rist: “Adult volunteers can get involved in any aspect of the programme, you don’t have to be an adventurer like Bear Grylls. Do you have first aid knowledge? Are you good with numbers? Handy in the kitchen? A DIY whizz? “Everyone has something to offer, you just don’t realise it! Volunteering with us is easy, fun and flexible – how much time you give is completely up to you. Whether you help out once a fortnight, month or term or just at special events or camps, there is bound to be a role you can play, and no matter how you get involved, we’ll make sure you’re properly trained and supported.” Both men and women are welcome, there is no upper age limit and for 14-18 year old there is the option of becoming a young leader. Visit the website for more details http://www.17thnene.co.uk/

Hampton Mums Closure of Hampton Children’s Centre has only increased the importance of this group – which connects and supports mums. Volunteers are needed to help at meetings and with activities. To find out more join the Hampton Mums Peterborough group on Facebook.

Hampton Nature Reserve For a flavour of the fun volunteers have helping with everything from wildlife surveys to scrub bashing and pond clearing, take a look at the video on the Hampton interactive map www. ohhampton.co.uk Great for anyone who loves being outdoors, full details of how to get involved can also be found on the map.

Hampton Events Committee & Yaxley Festival It’s easy enough to turn up to an event like the Hampton Autumn Fayre, but months of work go into giving everyone a great day out. Luckily, there’s also plenty of fun to be had being part of the team that organises everything from the entertainment programme to publicity to litter picking. If you enjoy teamwork and want to get to know your neighbours, contact Lorraine Clarke via the Hampton Gazette Facebook page, or Justine Eldred via the Yaxley Gazette Facebook page.

See the interactive map www.ohhampton.co.uk for many more local groups and initiatives that could use your time. And if your organisation is looking for volunteers, visit the map to add a link to your appeal.

Want permanent fat removal? The Beautiful Day Spa & Beauty Salon are now offering a laser clinic, and it’s not just about hair removal, they offer much more. Ultrasonic Cavitation

Permanent Fat Reduction Our new revolutionary, non surgical fat removal procedure makes it easy to contour and sculpt your body into the shape you always wanted.

There is no surgery, no anaesthesia, no hospital stay, no time off and no recovery time. Ultrasonic is the perfect treatment for women or men who want to contour their body and regain their confidence. You will see an immediate change in your appearance after your first session, with optimum results after 8 to 12 sessions.

How does it work?

Ultrasonic therapy forces a powerful soundwave to the fat cell membranes. The fat cell membrane succumbs to the pressure, is reduced to liquid and is expelled through the body’s normal metabolic method. Ultrasonic Cavitation destroys fat cells at such a rate and in such a quantity that fat storage is significantly reduced or eliminated. You will see the results and notice an increase in your body’s fat cell metabolism.

After the first treatment, you will experience a reduction of several centimetres in circumference and additional results after the next visit and longer. Age, metabolism, changes in hormones, medications, tissue structure and treatment area will have an impact on the results. To maintain the results, it is important to follow a healthy diet and exercise regularly.

Open 7 days a week.

Beautiful Day Spa and Beauty Salon offer many treatments and some that you won’t find anywhere locally, including the Lunchtime Facelift. Lots of celebrities are having scars, hair, tattoos etc removed, it’s now very affordable and right on your doorstep. Beautiful Spa offers FREE consultations, so why not book in? Treatments are available to men and women.

You will find the treatment comfortable and trouble free. You may experience warmth during the treatment and a small amount of noise discomfort, but there is no pain.

Hampton Netball Club gives a little back As a club we decided that we wanted to give a little back and we are proud to say we are going to fundraise for the next 12 months for “Sue Ryder – Thorpe Hall” and already we have got loads planned that everyone in the club can get involved in juniors and adults. We have already run a charity match night and on Sunday 8th June Lynda Chapman & Pip Wilson took to the skies and took part in a skydive, which was fantastic. Still planned for this month is a stall at the Hampton Hargate School Fete and a Tea Party. We also look forward to Claire Morris taking to the skies for a 3rd skydive and Stacey Rees-Squlech, Emma Graham & Rachael Davis taking part in the Great Eastern Run. We are hoping to have a grand Christmas Raffle and are already collecting prizes. All this and still playing in our current summer league, training and promoting “Back to Netball” sessions every Saturday. 32 32
