The winners of the 2nd Annual Hampton Community Awards are announced on page 5. Discover more about those who received well-deserved recognition for their invaluable work within our community. You can also learn about what our wild residents have been up to, on pages 18-19; from swans with attitude to fluttering butterflies. There's plenty of fun ideas for the summer holidays; a mixture of swimming and stories (although not at the same time, the books will get wet), history and space ... turn to page 13 to find out more. There are many opportunities throughout the summer to wear a hat, but which one should you choose? Our feature on page 29 may help you to avoid making an expensive mistake. Finally, cool down with your own, home-made raspberry ripple ice-cream on page 20. And, there's plenty more inside! We hope you enjoy this edition.

Change can be really challenging. That’s why we at CSK Church go into all the primary schools in Hampton and present every year 6 pupil with a gift of a booklet called ‘It’s your move.’ Its 80 pages brim with advice, activities and real-life testimonies, supporting children through the changes of moving from Primary to Secondary education. It covers all the issues of concern for a young person, with features on getting to school, doing homework and finding your way around. ‘It's Your Move’ also covers some of the more difficult aspects of life at secondary school including making friends and bullying. I read a quote by an actress who said: “Your ability to navigate and tolerate change and its painful uncomfortableness directly
correlates to your happiness and general well-being.” Change is all around us and change happens to all of us in some form or another, and we all face change in different ways. Some of us love changes and others love for things to remain the same. Some of the changes we face, like the loss of a loved one, can quite literally change our whole lives. If you need support through change, do contact us at CSK Church or come along and join us at one of our Sunday services at 10am where you will discover, as we have, that God’s love for us never changes: He is the same yesterday, today and forever, and whatever we are going through in life, we can know His support and love as we support and love one another. Every Blessing, Sylvia
Public urged to stay fire safe in hot weather Cambridgeshire residents have been urged to stay fire safe when outdoors this summer With temperatures forecast to be similarly high to last year, fires in open areas of land can easily spread and become out of control. Group Commander Paul Clarke, head of community fire safety at Cambridgeshire Fire and Rescue Service, said: “We want to help ensure that people enjoy the sunny weather while it’s here safely. High temperatures and dry areas of land can be perfect conditions for a fire to spread. Something as simple as not stubbing a cigarette out properly, or using a disposable barbecue on grass, can start a fire that can develop quickly.”
There are seven simple steps we urge residents to take to help prevent an outdoor fire: 1. Ensure cigarettes are completely out 2. Do not throw cigarettes out of car windows onto grass verges or vegetation 3. Put disposable barbecues on bricks, do not place directly on grass 4. Do not leave glass bottles lying on the ground, the sun’s rays reflect through the glass and can start a fire 5. When camping, do not leave campfires unattended and make sure it is completely out before you leave it 6. Use barbecues on a hard, flat surface, away from grass, shrubs or fencing 7. Talk to your children about the dangers of starting a fire.

a great success!
I was looking for a way to get the neighbours together and having the cricket pitch on our doorstep was the perfect place to do this. Picnic on the Pitch seemed the ideal title for the event I shared this idea on our Hampton Water Peterborough residents group Facebook page. It soon became popular with lots of people interested. I had lots of neighbours offering to help from storing the food in their fridges, helping with the shopping for the event and setting up the gazebos. At the end of the night lots of people helped to pack it all away. We had over 50 people turn up for the event during the day starting at 1pm and eventually finishing around 11pm. It was lovely seeing
all the children of all ages playing together and making friends. We had rounders, giant Jenga skittles and football taking place. The adults were all talking and getting to know each other. The atmosphere was amazing and everyone was in good spirits. We will be doing a mid summers evening get together on the pitch as well as making the picnic on the pitch an annual event hoping to grow it. The community spirit was lovely and new friendships have been formed.

Kerry shares a little about her experience and aspirations, and how this can help to benefit you in your journey to your dream home or investment ...
Kerry McQuade Heartland Mortgage Services
Home is where the is I was born and bred in Yaxley attending William de Yaxley and my Nan being born in Yaxley in the early 1920s when there was only Broadway and Main Street. I lived myself in Yaxley until I was 22 years old. I currently live in Coates with my husband Lee and our two dogs Peppa and Betty. I have worked within the financial services industry for the last 12 years. My first job being a mortgage underwriter for Norwich and Peterborough Building Society. This is where my love of mortgages began! I have then since worked in senior positions in both banking and estate agency, including becoming an awardwinning mortgage broker in my own right. I set up Heartland Mortgage Services from a desire to provide a stress-free, impartial home buying service for individuals, couples and families throughout the Peterborough and Cambridgeshire.
My aim is to work with my clients from the initial stages of seeing how much they are able to borrow, all the way through the mortgage and legal process and up until they move into the house. I use my estate agency experience to save money on behalf of my clients during negotiations. I also keep in touch with clients, contacting them annually to renew their buildings and contents insurance, offer protection reviews for life cover, critical illness cover and income protection. I also will contact my clients 6 months prior to their deal ending to ensure that they have enough time to refinance a new deal to start as soon as their current one ends. Many clients will sit on a lender’s standard variable rate for years and not look to refinance their deal and waste money on unnecessary interest. The benefit to customers is that I work solely for the client and work
in their best interest. My job as your mortgage broker is do the hard work for you when it comes to arranging a mortgage and to save clients time, stress, money and hassle. I look at thousands of mortgage deals across the whole of the market and recommend the most affordable lender for your needs. As I am not employed by an estate agent or bank I have no conflict of interest and my sole aim is to save you money on your purchase and mortgage. I can assist in the early stages with how to look for a property online, what price bandings, individual criteria and areas they should be looking at depending on their circumstances. I then will monitor the property portals every day, email the client when a suitable property is available and arrange a viewing for them on their behalf. I also conduct research on the property so I have an initial idea of how much my client should look to offer.
I take pride in saving my clients time and money on their important investment. I love spending time with family and friends and love to walk our dogs around Coates especially Feldale Lake – which is such a beautiful place to spend time My ultimate aim is to be a key lifestyle provider for Peterborough and Cambridgeshire and a multi advisor mortgage brokerage with a team of likeminded individuals who have a passion for providing a friendly and stress free experience with a world class customer service. I am currently on the look out for the right people to join my team. Clients have kindly shared their reviews on the Heartland Mortgage Services Facebook Page and the Heartland Mortgage Services Facebook Page Feefo Review Page.

TRAVEL FEATURE
by Jamie Banks
River Cruising River cruising has become increasingly popular in recent years with many of the world’s major rivers now being toured. In Europe, the Danube is one of the most popular rivers, followed by the Rhine and Elbe. Elsewhere in the world, the Amazon, the Nile, the Yangtze in China and the Mekong from Vietnam to Cambodia are also popular destinations I was lucky enough to experience a river cruise through Budapest on the Danube with Ama Waterways earlier this year. On arrival we were met with glasses of champagne while the check in process was carried out. We were taken to a stunning bar area and I was surprised by how luxurious the boat was. Our cabin was spacious and had a large balcony with table and chairs where we could sit and watch the scenery pass by. The whole cruise was all inclusive with a great range of drinks available. The restaurants on board served spectacular food. I was worried that the boat would feel cramped, but it never did even though we were told it was a fully booked trip. Being moored up in the centre of the city made it incredibly easy to see the sights of Budapest. It was a fantastic experience from start to finish and I would recommend considering a river cruise for your next holiday. enquiries@kuyenda.co.uk www.kuyenda.co.uk 0800 90 98 980

Helping local swans A concerned Hampton resident wished to let readers know about the recent safe rescue of a wandering swan ... At this time of the year swans have disagreements about territory. Nest against nest and the strongest wins. People find swans wandering around and sometimes this can be dangerous as they seem to like wandering along West Lake Avenue at the busy times and causing traffic to swerve around them. Or they can be seen sitting outside people’s front doors, in their gardens or parking areas. One was recently found sitting just outside the Moorhen and seemed not to notice the cars that were edging alongside it, trying not to run it over. I tried all sorts of organisations, but none seemed interested in helping, until I found a brilliant rescue organisation at Whittlesey called
18 18
Unity Wildlife Rescue. With the aim of treating and rehabilitating any local wildlife, they sent people to transfer the swan to another lake. I can’t praise them enough!
More info ... The male mute swan, known as the cob, fiercely defends the territory that he and his mate share . If an intruder, such as another male swan, dares to invade his territory he uses a threat posture, raising his wings and back feathers, while lowering his head and moving powerfully through the water. Harming a swan in any way is a criminal offence and prosecutions are becoming more
commonplace now that conviction precedents have been set. It is also a criminal offence to interfere with nesting swans in any way – they may only be removed or handled by recognised groups who should act in the best interest of an endangered, sick or injured bird. In addition to the natural threats they face from foxes, mink & botulism, modern society has added several more such as pollution, vandalism, uncontrolled dogs, fishing-tackle and lead poisoning, as well as unmarked pylons, overhead cables & bridges. In folklore seeing a red butterfly is supposed to bring excitement and energy. Well, when I saw a Red Admiral in our Hampton Vale garden the other day, I was pleased because I hadn’t actually seen one in Hampton before. I didn’t get the ‘special message’, though, that in folklore it was supposed to bring to me

Red Admiral butterfly
Lakota (Lover of Nature)
But I can recall the beautiful patterns and colours that the Red Admiral possesses. Although the overall impression is red and black its wings also have distinctive shades of dark brown, plus white spots and patches. If you’ve never seen one do keep an eye out in Hampton this summer; they really are one of our most beautiful butterflies. It is this time of year when they are most plentiful in number, but seem to be quite rare around this area. The ones we do see, however, may well have come across from Europe where many migrate to during the winter to find warmer weather; returning northwards again in the summer months. Male Red Admirals have interesting territorial behaviour. Only males with a territory have an opportunity to mate, and they will often fly around patrolling their area seven to thirty times an hour. Those with strong flying ability are those that are able to chase off intruding males and therefore then able to mate with females. Often the males will court females for several hours before mating actually takes place. Once it has then the female will lay her eggs on stinging nettles, which provide food for the caterpillars once they have hatched. Adult Red Admirals drink nectar from flowering plants such as the buddleia, and will also eat overripe fruit. Red Admirals are often known as a people-friendly butterfly, often landing on and using humans as perches. In many cultures butterflies are seen as a symbol for the soul. In Chinese culture butterflies often symbolise a long and healthy life. The Japanese also have great respect for butterflies: for them they can represent marital bliss and the vibrancy of youth. In Greek mythology they zwere often seen as the souls of loved ones. In various native American mythology butterflies symbolise the human spirit, with tribes believing that they are able to take a person’s wishes to the ‘Great Spirit’ to be answered.
Look out for the
Hornet hoverfly They are big. They are photogenic. And they are in disguise. Give welcome to some of Britain’s most spectacular hoverflies. Even if one travelled the world, it is unlikely that you would encounter larger or more memorable hoverflies. Yet the chances are that the hornet hoverfly (volucella zonaria) lives at or very close your address . Hoverflies are mimics of stinging or biting insects and this big beast mimics the European hornet. At times these hoverflies can be very active and difficult to approach. However, when they are preoccupied feeding at flowers or sun bathing, they tend to rely on their mimicry to permit close approach. The key question, ‘am I looking at a fly or not’? Hoverflies have short antennae. Bees and most wasps have long antennae, and in the case of social and solitary wasps the antennae have an elbow bend near the base. That difference is very easy to spot. Female hoverflies do not have pollen baskets on their hind legs. Flies have only two wings, the hind pair reduced to drum-sticks functioning as gyroscopes.

RECIPE
Raspberry Ripple Ice Cream July is National Ice Cream Month. Celebrate with this homemade raspberry ripple Preparation time: 20 minutes Cooking time: 10 minutes Servings: 12 Ingredients 250g raspberries 225g caster sugar 2 large eggs 4 egg yolks 600ml double cream Raspberries or other fruit for serving Method Place the raspberries in a pan with 2 tbsp of the sugar. Cook on a medium heat until sugar dissolves into the pulp. Simmer for 5 mins until thickened, then push the pulp through a sieve into a bowl and discard the seeds. Place the eggs, egg yolks and remaining sugar into a bowl. Whisk with an electric whisk hand whisk to combine everything, then place over a pan of gently simmering water – the bowl should not touch the water. Beat with the electric whisk for 3-4 mins until thick and pale. Remove from heat and continue beating with the whisk until cool. In another bowl, whisk the cream until it forms soft peaks, then gently fold into the cool egg mix until just combined. Pour the mix into a shallow container or dish that can be frozen. Just before you freeze the mixture gently swirl the raspberry puree through, cover with cling film and freeze for at least 6 hrs. Remove from the freezer about 20 minutes before serving. Place scoops of the ice cream into bowls with extra raspberries or other fruit. It's also gorgeous in cones.

As a ‘cat person’ and cat owner myself, I know just how important it is to find someone you can trust and rely on to care for your cat(s) while away from home. It can be difficult and sometimes awkward having to rely on family and friends, and they may not have the time, as I have, to fuss over your feline friend(s). I understand how precious your cat is to you, and I will treat your cat as if it were my own. Your cat(s) remain content within the comfort and familiar surroundings of your home. No stressful car journeys/stays in unfamiliar cattery surroundings. I have two cats, Phoebe (age 11) and Tabby (age 3). Tabby, once a nervous and temperamental stray, is now a very attentive and content domestic cat. He appeared at my
house in search of food and shelter a year after Louis, my Maine Coon, who had reached 17, passed away. I’ve always had a cat of some kind, whether an ordinary moggie or a pedigree, I love them all equally. I live in Hampton and am not employed in any other work so at your service morning, daytime and evening. I am happy to meet you and your cat(s) at a time that is convenient to you for a free no obligation chat about your requirements. I have full pet business insurance and am DBS/CRB checked. I have an unmarked car and I don’t wear a uniform so I’m not advertising the fact you’re away when I make my visit. You deal directly with me, not a new face each time, so your cat builds up a good relationship with me.

VET
Veterinary Medicine is a highly competitive field. Every year there are hundreds of applicants for each available place. It is probably one of the most over- subscribed courses in the country By James Campbell You will need excellent A-levels. Most people have chemistry, biology and either physics or maths at Grade A or B. Some universities will accept other subjects if they are impressed with the candidate. You will need to check with individual universities. Many Veterinary schools expect candidates to take a BMAT test (BMAT stands for biomedical admissions test) in order to get into vet school. This is an aptitude test. Go to www.bmat.org.uk for information and sample questions. Be prepared not to get in at the first attempt. You can re-apply and make use of the year to gain experience. Whether it is a first attempt or a retry you need to differentiate yourself for the competition. Try to gain experience
working in a vet practice, on farms assisting with lambing or calving, in dog kennels or at local zoos and animal rescue centres. Mostly you will be cleaning out kennels, feeding animals, making tea etc. It will almost certainly be unpaid. But ask lots of questions, and ask to observe interesting operations etc. Write up interesting cases and experiences as case studies, explain what you learned and submit these along with your application. This will prove to the university that you are self-motivated and dedicated, which counts for a lot during the application process. Remember that universities like to take on well-rounded students, so make sure develop hobbies and talents in other areas too.

Hampton College Progress has been at the forefront of everyone’s mind in recent weeks as our students have prepared for their external GCSE and A Level examinations. Students have continued to be actively engaged in a variety of extra-curriculuar and sporting activities and curriculum based trips. Year 12 Geography A Level students travelled to the Holderness Coast, East Riding Geography to undertake various field studies which will form part of their final coursework. Students were taken to the West End in London to watch the production of Death of a Salesman, where students met with Hollywood actor Wendell Pierce – who played the lead role of Willy Loman. Year 11 have been treated to a fantastic performance of Lamphouse Theatre’s production of ‘Suitcase Romeo & Juliet’. We hope it has helped students in Year 11 to revise the play’s characters, plot and themes in preparation for their first English Literature exam. Form JOW were recently served lunch by the Headteacher, Mr Gilligan, for achieving the SLT Award in the College’s Houseopoly reward programme. The students have worked hard together to ensure they met that target and have gone above and beyond to try to reach the last reward point of Head of School award. They are also on track to surpass this award in the next half term. The Year 9 Football Team also have achieved major success by beating Nene Park Academy 3-2 to lift the Peterborough Schools Cup. The boys played extremely well and we are really proud of your success. Congratulations to the whole team. They were then presented with a Head’s Commendation by Mr Gilligan in front of all College staff during morning briefing. We are holding a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) day, focusing on careers across Hampton Academies Trust schools for Year 8 Students. Local employers involved in STEM related careers will be joining us at the careers fair. We also entered the Year 7, 8 and 9 tennis team into the Peterborough Schools Championships. The Year 9 tournament was a massive success and we were crowned CHAMPIONS for the first time ever by beating Kings, The Peterborough School and OBA. In the Year 8 Tournament we finished a close third behind Kings and Hampton Gardens.
Hampton Mini Movers We have enjoyed some lovely singalong sessions in the outdoor play area recently, and the children have loved joining in with Julie’s fantastic songs and actions! Hopefully the weather will be kind over the remainder of the term for us to enjoy more al fresco singing, as well as doing the Hokey Cokey! The sessions are run by volunteers from KingsGate Community Church. Contact Rachael 07983 421139 for more information, search for Hampton Mini Movers on Facebook or just pop along, no need to book.
Little Acorns Day Nursery and Montessori School The children are enjoying lots of water play and messy activities. We have also been exploring the gardens looking for different bugs and had a pet week with children bringing in their own pets to show their friends. The preschool are getting ready to leave us ahead of their new adventure to 'big school', enjoying visits from the primary schools and finding out exciting information about their new school. Thank you to Laura from Yaxley church who came in to speak to the children, we hope to see you soon.

The Ark The Ark has been exploring jobs this term through sensory activities, crafts, songs and stories. A selection of cereals led to much creativity as the children used diggers and dumper trucks to create a construction site. The farmyard scene also proved popular. Heather has been teaching us some new songs and telling us more stories all based around this theme and we have continued to be in fine voice. Jo, from Spurgeons Children’s Charity (based in Peterborough), will be joining us for a few sessions during the summer term. She will be bringing along some story sacks to match our job themes. Her selection of animal-related stories on ‘Vets’ week proved very popular. We look forward to welcoming you on a Thursday morning 10 – 11.15am at CSK Hampton Church. The Ark is taking a break during the school summer holidays. Our last session this half term will be Thursday 18 July 2018.
Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service for Hampton Tiddlers Hampton Tiddlers, a group of volunteers based in Peterborough have been honoured with the Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service, the highest award a voluntary group can receive in the UK. Hampton Tiddlers is a stay and play charity group for children aged 0 to 5 years and their parents and carers, formed following the closure of 6 children’s centres in Peterborough in 2014. We run two sessions a week which are open to children and carers all over Peterborough to tackle isolation faced by parents who are unable to get out and find suitable activities for young children. Parents and carers report they not only enjoy the sessions but also the activities help to reduce isolation, increase health, wellbeing and participation of them and their children in the community where they live, both them and their children made friends by coming to the group. The sessions also help encourage families to get involved in their communities in a positive way through befriending activities, volunteering, reduction in chances of being affected by mental health issues due to isolation, bring a greater understanding in Peterborough. The Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service aims to recognise outstanding work by volunteer groups to benefit their local communities. It was created in 2002 to celebrate the Queen’s Golden Jubilee. Winners are announced each year on 2 June – the anniversary of the Queen’s Coronation. Award winners this year are wonderfully diverse. They include volunteers helping people overcome mental health problems through sport, volunteers using caravans as mobile cafe/information centres in geographically remote locations and another group mentoring children who have a parent in prison. Representatives of Hampton Tiddlers will receive the award from Mrs Julie Spence OBE QPM Lord Lieutenant of Cambridgeshire later this summer. Hampton Tiddlers’s Founder and Chairperson, Faustina Yang says: "We are really honoured to receive this award from the Queen. It is a great recognition of our dedicated volunteers’ hard work. I am proud of you all. Thank you all our past and current volunteers, and all the organasiations and individuals who have supported us. Special thanks to Hampton Gazette and Yaxley Gazette for promoting our group so we can reach more people in the communities, and to PCVS for all the support throughout our journey, Cllr Marco Cereste for nominating us, Tesco Serpentine Green for providing the community space. We wouldn’t have made such big impact for our communities without you. Thank you!"
Hampton College Primary M&M Productions performed their spectacular version of The Wizard of Oz in front of 360 beaming children. It was an absolute spectacle from beginning to end, with stunning harmonies in their beautiful renditions of the classical musical’s songs, and scene changes that had characters appearing as if from nowhere and disappearing into thin air. The children were mesmerised throughout and our staff had just as much fun! Year 6 were treated to a personalised workshop afterwards, in which they were taught by the performers about stage confidence, characterisation, lighting and sound and even the secrets behind their magical scene changes. Some Year 6 children became directors for a short scene of the play while others bravely acted the scene out in front of the year group. Our Year 5 pupils embarked on a trip to Thorpe Park as part of their 'Scream Machine' topic. Whilst on this trip the children had invaluable experiences working alongside engineers to design their own rollercoaster cars, as part of a science and maths workshop with the park professionals. Of course the trip wouldn’t have been complete without an afternoon to experience some of the rides and put their learning into action! We would like to extend our sincere thanks to the Mulberry Tree Farm for fundraising £750 to enable this trip to take place.
Folksworth Pre-school It’s hard to believe that the academic year is drawing to a close and our children have been accepted at their chosen schools. Although this always brings about mixed emotions from parents and children, well planned transition helps support the families take the next step on their child’s academic path. However this does not stop or slow down the fun and learning here at Folksworth Preschool. This terms home learning project is raising a caterpillar at home. Our children will enjoy caring for a caterpillar at home and taking responsibility for his or her own pet. Many of the children have named their new pet, one being called spike.... we can’t wait to see what happens next and talking about why and how things change.

Money Matters by Pete Bird, Bird & Co, Certified Public Accountants

legallybinding MAKING TAX DIGITAL VAT Update HMRC’s latest MTD policy update means supplier statements can now be used to record expenses for input tax purposes; a big time saving for many businesses that adopt spreadsheet accounting or those that have many monthly invoices A controversial policy of HMRC has always been that a business using, for example, the cash accounting scheme and spreadsheets to record their expenses had to record every single purchase invoice in a digital format even though the business might make a single payment to a supplier based on a statement covering perhaps 40 or 50 different invoices. It would be sensible for the business to make a one-line entry based on the payment total. With the cash accounting scheme input tax is only claimed when payments are made to suppliers. That policy has now changed. The updated notice has also confirmed that petty cash expenses can be posted as a single total if no individual receipt within the posting exceeds £50 and the total of all receipts does not exceed £500 per entry. Both figures are VAT inclusive.
Change of address Bird & Co are moving from their current address in Holme Road Yaxley to 183 Main Street Yaxley (previously known as Sophie T’s vintage tea room). An exact date for the move is not known as internal changes are being done, but a rough date will be the end of July/early August 2019. Further details will be announced in due course, but of course all of our client’s will be notified as will everyone else.
Are you muddled over maintenance? You may not think you are, but it is very likely that you haven’t fully appreciated the significance of an order for child maintenance payments included in a consent finance order within divorce proceedings. It is always desirable to have a finance order in place, which you can ask the Court to make after decree nisi in divorce proceedings, because it brings closure to the financial claims of the divorcing parties so you know there won’t be any nasty surprises in the future. But it is not uncommon for the recipient of child maintenance payments set out in a consent order, to get a nasty surprise when the payer, very often the husband, decides to reduce or stop the payments altogether. You may think that can’t happen, but in fact after 12 months from the date of the order, child maintenance is not enforceable in the usual course of events and the Child Maintenance Service takes over the enforcement of maintenance, in accordance with their own calculations. Either party can apply for a CMS assessment and once this is made, the terms of the court order are cancelled. So bear this in mind if you are presented with a consent order with agreed child maintenance included. It only has a short life span. Any questions, consult with your.

Weddings, race events, polo; there are many opportunities throughout the summer to wear a hat, but which one should you choose? How do you avoid making an expensive mistake?
A-head of the game
Choosing the perfect hat First you need to look at your face shape. Ovalshaped faces can get away with almost any style. A large brimmed hat should be tilted backwards slightly so that it frames your face. If you have a square or round face, choose a hat with a large brim and wear it slanted. A long face looks lovely with a beret style or even a Matador style Glasses can be a bit tricky but choose a hat with an upturned brim style so that it doesn't feel like you are hiding behind a lot of face furniture! There is a bit of an art to hat wearing. You need to think about your hairstyle. Hair should complement the hat. Hats nearly always look

You shouldn't pick anything you feel you have to fuss or fidget with; you should feel completely confident right hat for you. Don't shy away from 'big' hats because they generally look smaller once they are actually on your head

Most people start with an outfit and try to find a hat to complement it. But it might be better to do it the other way around. If you fall in love with a hat that's a real statement piece,
If you are very lucky you might have a dress and hat hire establishment in your town. This can be an excellent way to get the outfit and hat of your dreams for a fraction of the cost of buying it outright. At the end of the day you have to feel happy, confident and comfortable in your chosen hat. Physical comfort is the most important factor. You shouldn't pick anything you feel you have to fuss or fidget with; you should feel completely confident. As the hat designer Piers Atkinson says, "Make sure the hat doesn't wear you; you wear the hat!"

consumeradvice HOW TO AVOID ... Summer fraud and the post-holiday burglar blues
By Eileen Le Voi, Safe Local Trades & Service
www.safelocaltrades.com
Whether you’ve already booked a week in the sun, are planning a short family break – or have yet to grab a last-minute getaway – don’t get caught up in the holiday blues this summer Holiday security is as important to add to your checklist as the usual ‘money, tickets, passport’ mantra. And there is plenty to consider; last year, holiday scamming accounted for around £7 million being ‘stolen’ from holiday makers, according to research - with more than 5,000 people the victims of holiday booking fraud. Travel association ABTA said victims lost an average of £1,380 each, having bought bogus airline tickets, accommodation or organised tours. It said fraudsters were using increasingly sophisticated methods to target people looking for good deals.
More than half (53%) of the crimes related to the sale of airline tickets, with scammers particularly targeting people visiting family and friends in Africa and the Indian subcontinent. One in four cases involved accommodation, such as payments to stay in upmarket villas which are either fictitious or are being offered without the owner's knowledge. Spain and France were among the destinations most commonly affected. Before you click to confirm payment, here are some tips from ABTA, Action Fraud and Get Safe Online:
If you are considering installing or upgrading any CCTV security / lighting or alarm systems – or even changing the locks – Safe Local Trades & Services has many reputable traders who can help. Visit the website at www.safelocaltrades.com for details of your nearest professional trader.
32
Check the booking agent's web address is legitimate and has not been altered by slight changes to a domain name - such as going from ‘.co.uk’ to ‘.org’ Don't just rely on one review - do a thorough online search to check the company's credentials Check whether the company is a member of a recognised trade body such as ABTA Wherever possible, pay by credit card and be wary about paying directly into a private individual's bank account Study receipts, invoices as well as terms and conditions If something sounds too good to be true, it probably is We can also greatly reduce the risk of burglary whilst away; a dark home in the evenings and uncollected mail is a sign to burglars that no one is home. Also remember, before you go on holiday: Set up automatic timer switches to turn your lights on when it gets dark Register for the Royal Mail’s ‘keepsake’ service Move valuable items out of view of windows Cut front and back lawns and trim back plants Don’t discuss holiday plans on social media Ask a trusted neighbour to watch over your home whilst you’re away
