Hampton Treasure hunt a huge success!
Hello! Welcome to the Summer! Our meeting last month was fantastic. We welcomed 8 ladies who finally took the plunge to walk through our door. It was so lovely to meet so many more local ladies and we had such a fantastic evening learning how to decorate Easter cookies using oozy icing! They all said they would come back this month, which is testament to how friendly we are as a group. I hope you saw our Fete advert in last month’s issue but please put the date of the Summer Fayre (see left, plus the cutout voucher) in your diary.
We are having a Kids Colouring competition this year with two age groups under 8’s and Over 8’s with a prize for the winner of each group. Entry is free and don’t forget to bring along your Fete Freebie Token to get your free cuppa (to help that piece of cake go down)! At Hampton WI, we really appreciate the growing support we have received for our yearly fetes and fayres and we do hope you continue to enjoy them. See you on the 7th!

May was full of new beginnings in the life of CSK. The sound of church bells ringing out in Hampton could be heard for the first time, as our new bell system was tested out.
We can carry out a wide range of services around your home.
Esther Hobbs (Hampton College Primary Phase), Grace Holland (Hampton College), Keziah Holbrow (Hampton Hargate Primary School), Jasper IvoryCastille (Hampton Vale Primary School), Leon Delegate of David Turnock Architects, the designer of our new church building, who is a Hampton resident, Steve Connolly of Watson & Cox Building Contractors, and Graham Cooper and myself, both from CSK Church, all gathered together with our named bricks as the path at the church began to be laid. It was Graham’s idea to have a named brick path, and he has been busy processing all the orders. Many Hampton residents and organisations have purchased bricks, including the Hampton Gazette. On Friday the 23rd May the keys to our new building were handed over to us, and now begins the exciting task of fitting out the building ready for us to move from our current meeting place of Hampton Vale Primary School at 10am every Sunday morning, to our new building for our first service there, which we hope will be early in July. The official dedication and opening of the building will be in September.

New business breakfast club gives Hampton a chance to connect up Plans to bring superfast connectivity to Peterborough business was the fitting topic for the launch of a new business network aiming to connect up companies in Hampton. Organised by O&H Hampton, the inaugural meeting of Hampton Business Breakfast heard from CityFibre’s Andy Starnes that more than 300 local businesses have already registered an interest in being linked to a fibre network that will deliver speeds of up to 100 times existing connections. But the business breakfast was primarily a chance for Hampton companies to connect face-to-face with their neighbours, including representatives from commercial and not-for-profit businesses across Cygnet and Kingston Parks, as well as Serpentine Green shopping centre and Opportunity Peterborough. Attendees also included Mastercard, which is relocating to Hampton later this year. Explained O&H Hampton General Manager Roger Tallowin: “We’ve put a lot of effort into helping the local community develop on Hampton and felt it would be good to offer a chance for the business community to do the same. “Hampton Business Breakfast network is also a chance for us and others to bring our business colleagues up-to-date with local developments and initiatives that may interest or affect them. “We are grateful to Andy Starnes and to Kiddicare who provided an excellent venue for our first meeting. It was really encouraging to hear everyone at the session give their support to the need for this new network.” The next meeting has already been scheduled for Wednesday 9 July, when Kathie Longbone. of Peterborough Health will talk about business and health, and the opportunity for local companies to sign up for free workplace health checks and support.
Any Hampton businesses who missed the launch event can contact info@ohhampton.co.uk to be added to future invitation lists.

Bringing a taste of Italy to Hampton! With its warm, classy and comfortable interior, equalled with a relaxed atmosphere, Hampton’s Mattoni restaurant is the perfect place to dine. Whether it is for a romantic meal with a partner, or just a catch up with family and friends, Mattoni is the perfect place to be. On arrival, my partner and I were welcomed by Gorreti with a small cocktail to start the evening! With the huge menu offering dishes from classic Italian pasta to chicken, steak, veal and fish there is something to please and treat everyone’s taste buds. When the starter arrived it was very well presented and tasted beautiful with my partner quoting that it was the best starter he has ever had! I chose the Bruschetta and my partner opted for Asparagi alla Parmigiana which is Asparagus wrapped in Parma ham and stone baked with grand parmigiana sprinkled on top to start. Delicious! When the main arrived it was also beautifully presented and tasted even better and the dish didn’t seem to have an end. I chose a classic Cannelloni dish whilst my partner had Spaghetti Polpette. After finishing our main dish, we were both extremely satisfied after the generous portions! We were then asked if we wanted to see the dessert and coffee menu, we agreed as we were very intrigued to what was on offer after our fantastic first two courses. The Amaretto Cheesecake and the Crème Brule were recommended to us and which were both extremely tasty. The Crème Brule was my favourite dish of the night. 114 Four Chimneys Crescent, Hampton Vale, Peterborough PE7 8FH

On 22nd April 2014, the most important reforms in family law for a generation according to Lord Justice Munby, President of the Family Division, came into force. By virtue of the new Children and Families Act 2014 the terms “residence” and “contact” disappear, to be replaced by “a child arrangement order”. On 22nd April 2014, the most important reforms in family law for a generation according to Lord Justice Munby, President of the Family Division, came into force. By virtue of the new Children and Families Act 2014 the terms “residence” and “contact” disappear, to be replaced by “a child arrangement order”. At first sight this looks like very good news because the old terms (a lot of people still use custody and access of course) can be emotive and divisive. But on closer inspection, when you come to defining what the child arrangements are, there will still be reference to where the child shall live as well the contact the child shall have with the other parent. There is scope for using more neutral terminology such as “the child shall spend time with the father…” in place of the much abused term “contact”, but the changes are not as far-reaching as family lawyers had hoped for.
Welcome New Reception Intake 2014 Hampton Vale parents! Has your child been offered a place in our reception class this September? If so, you are invited to a Parents’ and Carers’ Information Meeting on Monday 30th June 2014 at 2pm or 6pm at Hampton Vale Primary School, West Lake Avenue. Here you will be able to meet our Head Teache,r Miss Anne Byrne and the Foundation Stage Team, sample our school dinner menu, meet the Goslings Breakfast Club and After School Club Staff and find out all the information you need to know ready for your child to start their exciting Reception year. We will be happy to answer any questions you may have and we look forward to meeting you.

Farewell “Residence and Contact” Orders!
There is also a new Practice Direction requiring applicants to children cases to attend a Mediation Information and Assessment Meeting (MIAM) before they can come to court. The other parent will be invited to attend but doesn’t have to and the Applicant parent can avoid mediation for limited reasons, such as a history of domestic violence. Mediation is meant to sift out all but the most intractable cases from the court process, and give the court some breathing space from the flood of litigants in person resulting from the ending of legal aid. But because it is not compulsory for both sides, the Practice Direction is unlikely to have much impact. Getting the arrangements for your children right on separation must be one of the most important things you can do in a relationship breakdown and instructing a family law specialist, even at a cost to your pocket, is going to be worth the investment.

Hampton Wildlife Hampton Community News
There was a rhythmic hammering somewhere in the dense coverage of trees, far into the area where the Green Wheel track runs alongside the huge lake at the southern edge of Hampton.
Woodpeckers I couldn’t see it this time but have in the past seen a flash of green denoting a Green Woodpecker. The Green Woodpecker is the largest of the three woodpeckers that breed in Britain (the other two are the Greater and Lesser Spotted Woodpeckers). It has a heavy-looking body, short tail and a strong, long bill. It is green on its upperparts with a paler belly, bright yellow rump and red on the top of its head. The black ‘moustache’ has a red centre in males. They have an undulating flight and a loud, laughing call although I can’t say I have ever heard it. Green woodpeckers spend most of their time feeding on the ground. It’s possible, therefore, that someone in Hampton may have had one visiting their garden. Green woodpeckers survive on a diet of insects, such as ants, beetles and caterpillars, but have a particular fondness for ants, which they extract from crevices in trees with their long barbed, sticky tongue. They return day after day to their favourite ant hill to feed. Like other woodpeckers, these birds breed in holes they peck in dead wood in broadleaved woodlands, orchards, large parks and gardens. I believe that I may also have seen a Greater Spotted Woodpecker around St James’s Pond but couldn’t be absolutely sure. This bird is mostly black and white in colour with a red patch underneath its tail. The male also has a red patch on the back of its
14 14
head. This bird can more easily be tempted into gardens with the lure of peanuts. As with other woodpeckers, the stiff tail feathers are used as a prop when it is clinging to a tree, and its toes are specially arranged with two pointing forwards and two backwards. It is smaller than a Green Woodpecker, being about the size of a starling. The interesting thing about woodpeckers is the amazing way their heads and beaks have evolved in order to provide a shock absorber for their frenetic hammering. Hitting a solid tree with your beak so hard that splinters fly ought to cause concussion but the way bird’s beak joins the skull avoids this because the stresses are transmitted directly towards the centre of the brain. One of the wonders of the bird world.

April saw Vale Community Pre-school celebrate their 1st birthday. We hired a Magician/Punch & Judy show to entertain our children and some of the children that we invited over from the local Primary school. We had a party and a cake which the children (and staff ) all enjoyed. Each month we’ll be partnering with O&H Hampton to focus on one or two aspects of Hampton life.
Living in Hampton

Hampton’s growth from abandoned brickpits to thriving township shows that a new community can be built in a relatively short time. But a mature landscape where wildlife can thrive can take significantly longer. HOW TO GROW A PARK
A PARK FOR ALL SEASONS
Regular visitors to Crown Lakes Country Park will have seen some of the steps underway to ensure this popular spot provides something for the widest range of species, and that human, animal, bird and insect life, can happily co-exist.
Crown Lakes Country Park is home to such a rich population of animal, bird, insect and plantlife that whatever time of day or year you visit there is something to see – especially if you move quietly.
With the help of ecologists, O&H are improving pathways, opening up access, restoring ponds, creating wildflower areas and developing new habitats.
Visiting in spring
Ancient techniques for a modern park More than native 75,000 trees and shrubs were planted in 1997 but left to themselves these will become dense and crowd out life on the forest floor. We’re now thinning some plants to let in light, which opens up the understorey, allowing insect life, butterflies and reptiles to thrive. Creating habitats Another thing new landscapes can’t easily provide is the deadwood that small mammals need. At Crown Lakes one of the imaginative ways in which we’re helping them is through the construction of a batcave: a covered 2m pipe offering an ideal roost for bats close to pathways where they can feed on the wing. More than five of our native bat species have been recorded in the park. Elsewhere, hibernacula made from covered rubble mounds provide cover for a number of reptile species: the grass snakes, lizards and newts that the area has been so successful in encouraging. You may also see corrugated squares which we are using in order to monitor the reptile population. Wildlife corridors A key element missing from many new landscapes is the creation of green ‘corridors’ allowing wildlife to move and spread. At Hampton the extent of the open space, stretching from the nature reserve right through Hampton itself and then via the ancient brook Stanground Lode under the A15 into Crown Lakes, is helping encourage the rich mix of species the eagle-eyed can now see on their outings. “Crown Lakes is just one part of a chain of green spaces across Hampton. As a connected network of nature reserves, what has been created in Hampton is extraordinary.” Dr Peter Shepherd, BSG ecology
As the park’s resident warblers and woodpeckers begin courtship and nest building, spring is a wonderful time to enjoy the dawn chorus. Crown Lakes is also one of the first places in the area where you will hear the call of the cuckoo, and to enjoy the scent and colour of blossom. Summertime Early summer brings a riot of butterflies to the glades, including rarities such as the black hairstreak and grizzled skipper. At quieter times you may see some of the park’s larger residents: muntjac deer, badger and fox, emerge in search of food. “Very often when I am out with the dogs if I look back I see a muntjac cross the path behind us.” Sue Blackford, resident What to look for in autumn Autumn is the time to enjoy the changing colours of native trees but while human visitors gaze up, there is important work to be done for small mammals - squirrel, voles and woodmice feasting on forest fruits for the harsh times ahead. The damp conditions encourage fungi to flourish, especially along the bridleways, while resident birdlife on the lakes may be temporarily joined by migrants. What to see in winter If you are interested in the way woodlands are managed, winter’s bare branches make it the ideal time to see the how different areas of the park are maintained. The lack of cover makes it easier to spot hardy residents such as tawny and shorteared owls.
A PARK FOR ALL REASONS Here are just seven ways to enjoy Crown Lakes Country Park this summer: 1. Cycle: Crown Lakes is on national cycle network route 12, and on the Peterborough cycling leisure route 5, offering an 11.5mile route through the city’s green spaces. 2. Walk: You can find walking routes at Crown Lake on the walk4life website 3. Organise: O&H are always keen to encourage community use of the public open spaces on Hampton, including at Crown Lakes. If your club wants to do something then contact us through www.ohhampton. co.uk . 4. Play: covering the equivalent of 88 football pitches, there’s plenty of space for informal games from rounders to Frisbee. 5. Saddle-up: bridleways are intended to keep horse and human traffic apart. 6. Picnic: you’ll find both secluded spots and picnic tables overlooking the water where you can dine in comfort - whatever your taste. 7. Snap: we’d love to see your pictures of Crown Lakes in all its moods and colours – why not pin them to the interactive map on our website at www.ohhampton.co.uk

Kids' Only! Riddles
(Answers
So, what is there to do in Hampton for kids? Probably more than you think... This week I visited the gym equipment outside Hampton College Secondary School on Eagle Way. I was amazed at the incredible variety on offer for all ages and skill sets. The area has recently been constructed and is a perfect location for a summer afternoon in the sunshine without having to go very far. The table tennis tables provide anyone the chance to advance their skills in this fast paced sport. However, please be aware that you have to bring your own bats and balls to play on these tables as these are not provided.

This one is slightly harder this month. Try and fill the grid and the rows with the letter 1-9 only appearing once.
There are also several seating pods available as benches with perfect views of the area, essential for mums and dads to relax if they do not fancy tackling the extensive gym equipment available. The exciting gym equipment is perfect for everyone, with a tantalizing range to suit all needs and ages. It could even get you in shape for the year’s sporting activities ahead, with a range of upper and lower body exercise regimes. It also might be beneficial to those with some back pain or any other injuries. There are stations to improve muscle in all body areas, to leave you looking and feeling your best. If you have not tried the area out it is well worth a go. And if anyone asks where you have been...‘the gym’!

Are you ready for
hayfever At its worst, hay fever is like having a constant bout of flu - which not only seriously affects your daily life but even your future prospects if you have to sit exams or have a job interview. We have the worst hay fever rate in Europe, with 20 per cent of the population affected. However, many people don’t realise there are several simple ways you can minimise its effects. The best techniques for tackling hay fever: •
Start taking your hay fever remedies before the pollen starts to appear. aking action now can help prevent your symptoms developing.
•
The best preventative medicines depend on your symptoms. You may need a combination of antihistamine tablets, nasal sprays and eye-drops.
•
Keep your windows closed from early morning to late afternoon, as this is when pollen levels are at their highest. Keep your car windows shut and switch the air conditioning on to a closed system so you don’t take pollinated air rom outside into the car.
•
Wearing wide sunglasses will protect your eyes. Women whose eyes get sore as a result of hay fever should use hypoallergenic make-up.
•
Put a dab of petroleum jelly into each nostril. This stop pollen from entering the nasal passages.
•
Before going into your bedroom, take off the clothes you’ve worn outside. Shower and wash your hair before bed, otherwise you will get pollen all over your pillows. If you’re too tired, then give your hair a brush and cover it with a shower cap.
DID YOU KNOW? Alcoholic drinks worsen hayfever. Beer, wine and other spirits contain histamine — the chemical that sets off allergy symptoms in the body.

Your body needs to be rejuvenated and kept feeling young. So if you’re worried about your skin feeling rough and worn down, give yourself a treat with new spa treatments for this Spring/Summer season! Here’s how… After experiencing a range of massage treatments and body scrubs, I wanted to understand more about the importance of exfoliating and using natural ingredients and oils on your skin. I headed down to the spa to meet Kristin Mohn, beauty and massage therapist, in Hampton Vale, Peterborough. Kristin Mohn, also a Reiki Master, demonstrated her deliciously decadent chocolate body wrap and also the spring into summer body scrub and massage. Well known for her beauty, holistic and massage treatments, she first introduced me to her knew Chocolaty indulgence treatment that boosts your health and wellbeing. The process began with a dry body brushing which got rid of my

build-up of dry skin that I never even knew was there, leaving my skin silky smooth and ready for the treatment wrap. I was then covered in a Cocoa Bean Wrap full of anti-ageing vitamins B and E, antioxidants and energising minerals; magnesium and zinc. For those who are worried about waiting around whilst the wrap works into your skin; don’t be! Whilst you are in a snug cocoon, Kristin uses her expert techniques to give you a relaxing head, face and neck massage.
Also an amazing treatment for your skin was the Spring into Summer Body Scrub and Massage: a beautiful full body scrub that exfoliates your skin while adding nutrients and balancing oils. I then received a relaxing full body massage, using pure vital oils with stunning aromas. This left my skin feeling luxurious – it’s pure pleasure and relaxation for your body and mind and all of it is at affordable prices!
After the wrap had been wiped off, I had a full body massage with warm Vanilla, Cocoa & Almond Oil. At the end of this treatment, my skin felt wonderfully smooth, soft and plump and had an incredible lingering aroma.

The Ultra-Dissolve clinic are now announcing the launch of their new signature treatment; Ultra Ice, a new and innovative fat freezing eliminator. Ultra-Ice Fat Freezing This revolutionary treatment is Cryotherapy treatment; reducing fat in the area being treated to sculpt and contour your body for maximum results. It can literally freeze your butt off, lose that muffin top, love handles, back fat and even man boobs for the shape you’ve always wanted.
With unique machines, Ultra-Dissolve Clinic are able to treat most areas of the body, including the chins, abdomen, thighs, buttocks, breast tissue and more. Their varied sized application hand-pieces allows the treatment of both larger and smaller areas.
The treatment is completely pain free and comfortable. There is no surgery, no needles, no anaesthetic or numbing agent required, which means no recovery time. You can resume to normal daily activities immediately after the session.
During the weeks following the treatment, the destroyed cells are processed through your lymphatic system. In clinical trials, at 12 weeks post treatment, an amazing 9 out of 10 people have said to have seen an undeniable reduction in the treated area.
You can start to see results in as little as two weeks, although it could take up to four months for you to see full effects of the Ultra Ice Fat Freezing. Combining your Cryotherapy with a healthy diet and lifestyle will only further maximise your results. Not only is one - two sessions sufficient for most areas, this treatment is also permanent. Once destroyed, those same fat cells cannot grow back. Fat Freezing is an effective alternative for those wanting to avoid the higher cost, pain and recovery time that can be associated with other fat-reducing treatments.
How does it work? Cryotherapy treatment results in a notable and natural reduction of fat tissue that have shown a fat reduction between 21% and 24% and once destroyed, those same fat cells cannot grow back. The fat cells will be crystallized through the Cryotherapy procedure and are absorbed by the body’s natural processes.
PROOF – Studies prove clients lose an average of 25% of the fat layer in the treated area and that it is very safe. The more fat there is, the more you lose. 30 30
Why choose Ultra-Dissolve Clinic? A knowledgeable technician and state of the art technology are crucial to the success of the treatment. Amanda Allport is one of the leading detoxification therapist clinics in East Anglia and a leading cellulite specialist. Ultra-Dissolve Clinic’s unique machines are able to treat most areas of the body for both ladies and gents. Yaxley Runners
County Cup
Yaxley Runners members have been going marathon mad over the last few months, taking on the 26.2-mile distance several times since the start of the year.
With only one loss in the group stages, Leopards secured a place in the quarter finals against Co Jags B. A confident win saw them sail through to the semi final to face Co Jags A, the only team they had lost to earlier in the day. Co Jags A took an early lead and at the end of the first half had a two goal lead. A few words from Coach Helen at half time lifted their spirits a little and they took to court with more fight than the first half. Leopards managed to equal the goals scored in the second half. However, with Co Jags A securing the early two goal lead there just wasn’t enough time to pull it back. A much improved second half with great team spirit...well done Leopards!
Back to Netball After the success of the Netball Taster Sessions in March where an amazing 30 ladies attended over the 3 glorious sunny Saturday mornings. Hampton Netball Club are pleased to advise these sessions will continue weekly. So if you have recently moved to the area and are looking for a netball club to join, if you haven’t played for years and would like to play again or if you would like to try something different then why not come along and join us for a fun filled morning. Where: HCSA, Beaumont Way, Hampton Hargate When: Saturday Mornings 10am – 11:30am Cost - £4 per session How: Contact Tracey on 07565 551386 or email to ineedacard13@gmail.com
Most impressively, six of our members are attempting to run 14 marathons this year to help raise money for a fantastic cause. Gavin Farrow, Matt Lauch, Gary Masters, Ian Vallance, John Ackroyd and Kevin Peel are all ready well in to the challenge, during which they are attempting to raise £10,000 for Pancreatic Cancer UK.
Hampton Table Tennis Club The club meets between 7pm and 10pm on Tuesdays (at the Vivacity Leisure Centre, Clayburn Road, Hampton PE7 8GL) and Wednesdays (at the Hampton Vale Community Centre, PE7 8NJ). Everyone and anyone aged 16 or over is welcome, whatever their standard and whether or not they have played before. It’s an excellent way to keep fit and meet new people. Just £5 per session, and the first sessioon is free. See our website http://httc.weebly.com/ for more details.
Hampton Netball Tough Tournament for Pumas Entering their first county tournament as a new team, U14’s Puma’s played some really good netball against some high class opposition. Unfortunately they were not able to win a match but had two really close matches against far more experienced teams. They showed great character and really bonded as a team. The results may not have been brilliant but the experience gained made it worth their efforts. Leopards finish 3rd place at U14’s Cambridgeshire
Despite all the marathons these guys are running this year, none of them were lucky enough to get a place in the London Marathon in April, although we did have several members taking part. First home for the club was Suzie Hall, who crossed the line in a magnificent time of 3:25:54. She was followed home by Karen Ives (3:33:48), Mark Evans (3:36:28), Paul Atherfold (3:45:44), Neil Bason (3:46:22), Kerry Balmer (3:59:07), Sally Evans (4:01:02), Rob Coles (4:29:24), Wendy Martin (4:30:13) and Nina Wright (4:36:44). The club also had a great turnout at the Milton Keynes Marathon in May, with James Mogridge breaking the three-hour barrier during his first ever attempt at 26.2 miles. He finished in 24th place in 2:54:12, followed by Mark Evans (3:38:23), Karen Ives (3:39:25), Ian Vallance (3:46:34), Gary Masters (3:54:16), Dean Longman (3:56:56), Kevin Peel (3:57:51), Paul Atherfold (4:17:36), John Ackroyd (4:22:38) and Gavin Farrow (4:23:41). The club meets every Monday, at 6.30pm, at the Hampton Hargate Sports Facility, in Beaumont Road. Runners of all abilities are welcome. The club’s junior section meets on Fridays, at 6pm, with full coaching provided by UK Athletics coaches. Membership costs just £10 a year. For more information, visit www.yaxleyrunner.org.uk

Female football flying high at Hampton FC It was only 3 years ago that Hampton Football Club created one U10 Girls team to kick off their ambitious plans for female football in the city. In just three seasons they have become clearly the largest provider for female football in the Greater Peterborough area. They now cater for over 100 female players and are able to offer sessions for all girls from 7 years old and upwards, with 10 squads established for the 2014/15 season and are confident of reaching the combination league by 2020. As a club that concentrate on embedding a philosophy of playing flowing, passing football they have become renowned for producing elite level players and several have progresses on to Centre of Excellence football in the past two years. They are very proud of the fact that they have girls that have progressed to play at Lincoln, Cambridge and Arsenal.
But Hampton Football Club are not easing their progression and not now simply resting on their laurels, they are continuing to strive forwards. As a club they embrace young coaches and invest in them. This has resulted in the club having the most highly qualified coaching staff in the area to ensure that the level of coaching the players at the club receive is unrivalled by any other club in the region.
In addition Hampton Football Club have now formed a partnership with Peterborough United FC to offer opportunities for girls 13+ with the delivery of development session, these sessions will commence on Wednesday 4th.
The club are currently running session to allow girls in school years 3 and 4 and opportunity to learn basic skills with a view to joining a team when the new football season starts in September.
The club also has opportunities for girls of all other age groups to get involved in football and you will find full details of all opportunities from girls on the clubs website at www.hamptonfc.co.uk
Girls that would be interested in these sessions can contact Steve Purnell on 07964 496259 or steve@hamptonfc.co.uk
U/11 Peterborough District Alliance League Champions As parents we are proud to voice the achievements of a local football team which provide inspiring examples on how togetherness, performance and self belief equals success. It came together again on May 11th in Whittlesey with repeated success for Champions Hampton FC Blue, emerging triumphant in the Peterborough District Junior Alliance Cup Final for the third consecutive year running. The team served a starting point for local lads who have seen it through the years from U/7 to U/11 building a robust sustainability, proving stiff competition. Two late goals underlined the belief in the team, an equaliser close to FT followed by a winning goal in the depths of AET saw Hampton FC Blue make PDJA history against Wisbech St. Mary.
Congratulations to all the players, managers and supporters.
Panthers win U16’s Cambridgeshire County Cup
Hampton Netball Clubs junior team Panthers won every match of the group stages of the Cambs County Junior Tournament recently securing a place in the semi final against MI7. The opening couple of minutes saw MI7 take an early two goal lead. However, Panthers defenders Amy and Timmie soon put a stop to that, intercepting the passes into the semi circle and driving the ball through mid court onto shooters Phoebe and Karlie. It wasn’t long before Panthers took the lead, scoring 4 goals within just two minutes of play!.....final score 10 - 7 to Panthers and confidently through to the final against Rookies.

After six matches on the way to the final, seven pairs of tired legs took to court. Supporters from both teams looked on nervously. Rookies took an early lead scoring the first two goals and Panthers had to fight hard to pull it back. Tired limbs no more....Olivias long reach intercepted many balls, moving the ball quickly onto Megan or Tara who both accurately found the shooters who in turn converted to goals. A comfortable goal difference to secure the win...well done Panthers, a great team effort and a pleasure to watch!

Whilst ice-cream vans may be a seasonal delight, the confection itself is of course readily available from our supermarkets all year round in an astonishing array of different flavour combinations. But it has to be said that there’s nothing quite like the home-made variety and all you need is an ice cream maker! A firm favourite is real vanilla ice-cream, made with a rich homemade egg custard infused with seeds from a vanilla pod. It’s delicious on its own, but it also makes basic desserts such as fruit crumble or cinnamon-baked bananas into something special. In addition, you can incorporate all sorts of extras to add different flavours and textures: small pieces of good quality caramel or fudge, a marbling of raspberry purée, chopped strawberries, slivers of stem ginger, or even finely-chopped chilli with chocolate. And for a luscious, grown-up, boozy version, try adding whisky and a little Manuka honey – go steady with any alcohol though, as it slows down the freezing process quite considerably.

ingredients
500g Tub Vanilla Custard (eg.‘Taste the Difference’ or ‘Finest’) 300ml Carton Double Cream 2-3 Tbsp Icing Sugar (sifted) 1-2 Tsp Vanilla Extract (not essence)
method
Whisk everything together in a large jug, then pour into the ice-cream maker following the manufacturer’s instructions. Process until the volume increases and the desired consistency is achieved. A delicious accompaniment to nectarines baked in a little dessert wine and sprinkled with crushed amaretti biscuits.
Experimenting with flavours is great fun, and well worth the effort. However, if you’re in a hurry, the following is a very speedy vanilla icecream using good quality ready-made custard from the supermarket chiller cabinet: it takes about fifteen minutes from start to finish!*

Bin Thinking Brown bins. Sorry to use language that clearly offends many people, but it has to be said. The subject of paying to have garden waste collected has recently been causing great consternation for many. By the time this is published our brown bins will only be emptied if we have paid the requisite annual fee on top of our already high council tax.

I’ve now got used to the convenience of having all my garden waste collected, so I’ve grudgingly paid up for this year. To my mind this does seem a fairer system. After all, why should those who never make any use of brown bins contribute to their collection as part of their council tax? Although I suppose you could extend that argument to why should those without young children contribute to the high costs of children’s services including Hampton’s schools and play areas? Or why should those without dogs pay towards the erection and emptying of dog poo bins? I am concerned about the viability of the scheme and how well it’s been thought through. PCC tell us that the charge aims to cover the cost of the existing service, which is £800,000 per year. This is based on an assumption that 33% of households will pay. The impression I get from social media is that a much lower number are prepared to pay. So is there a risk of negligible cost savings whilst landfills are overloaded with garden waste that’s now put into the black bins? Or is just that a few objectors are shouting whilst enough people quietly accept the inevitability of having to pay? Then there are the mixed messages PCC give out. Amongst the Q&As on their leaflet is, “My bins are placed with others at the end of the street. How will you know who has paid?” PCC reply, “The sticker will help identify which house each bin belongs to.” Then another asks, “Can I share brown bin(s) with my neighbour?”, to which the response is, “Yes, but brown bins will only be collected from outside the house that has paid.” So if your brown bin isn’t left immediately outside your house (as very many aren’t because of the housing layout) it may or may not be emptied even though you’ve paid! It will be interesting to see how it all works out – hopefully well, but I’m not feeling too optimistic at the moment. 40
