Aspire Fitness Fridays 9.30 - 10.30 am: Ladies’ Fitness Session (children welcome)

I remember the day we moved. We pulled up to the house after a two hour journey and I struggled to get out of the car with my growing bump. I was so nervous, but we unpacked and went to explore the place we would now call home. We walked round the Hamptons and everyone we came across acknowledged us with a beaming smile and a friendly face; it felt like we’d lived here for years! Looking at the schools, parks, playing fields and meeting community, I knew we were home. A year on I am still enjoying a picnic by the lake and a shopping spree in the Serpentine. While Ozzy enjoys a trip to the park or visiting the pets at Dobbies, followed by some lunch and soft play at Kiddicare.

Christ the Servant King
The Parish Church of Hampton Father’s Day is celebrated throughout the world, in many countries on the third Sunday of June, as a way to honour and thank fathers and father figures. Unlike Mother’s Day, which can be dated back hundreds of years, many historians believe Grace Clayton was the founder of the celebration in Fairmont, West Virginia in 1908. A mine explosion in a nearby town killed 361 men, 250 of them fathers. She approached her minister in the Central Methodist Church, initiating the idea of a special day for fathers to be honoured and remembered. For other historians, the origins are attributed to Sonora Dodd in Washington, who having heard a Mothers Day sermon in church, felt that fatherhood deserved recognition too. Having lost her mother at the age of 16 years, Dodd was brought up, along with her five siblings, by her father. The day was celebrated on the 3rd Sunday in June 2010 in the Presbyterian Church.
Avery House has announced the official opening of its dementia café on 19 June, between 10am and 12pm at Avery House, Chaffinch Lane, Hampton Vale. The café is open to all those in the community who are living with dementia and their carers, and will be open to everyone on the third Friday of every month thereafter.
Though the Bible does not mention a Father’s Day, the theme of fatherhood is recognised in the very person of God Himself. When the disciples asked Jesus to teach them how to pray, he began with the words, “Our Father in heaven”, the opening words of the prayer known as the Lord’s Prayer. Whatever our situations with our earthly fathers, as Christians we believe we all have a father in God, who created us and loves us. On 21 June at our 10am service at CSK Church we will be giving thanks to Him, and also to all the men in our church, whether fathers or not, by offering a small gift and words of thanks. You would be very welcome to join us.
Dementia Café
The official opening is in conjunction with national care home open day and the community are all invited to celebrate by coming along on that afternoon at Avery House for refreshments and the end of our cycle challenge.
VE day celebrated in Hampton!
The VE Dance at Hampton Vale Community Centre was greatly enjoyed with excellent music, good food and a raffle by Hampton residents; the vintage tea party was a complete sell out! The Hampton Parish Council were delighted to give all the primary school children a memo board and pen commemorating the day, which they were thrilled with.
VE day afternoon tea
I would like to say a big thank you to everyone involved in producing the VE day afternoon tea on Bank Holiday Monday. It was a lovely event and I’m sure all who attended enjoyed it. Thanks too to the sponsors, hope you will do another in future Thanks Pat Herbert

Beware Romance Scams
by Eileen Le Voi
PROPERTY MANAGEMENT & LETTINGS
07749 115968 info@agtpml.co.uk
www.agtpml.co.uk
Dating or romance fraud occurs when an individual believes they’ve met their perfect partner online – but they aren’t who they say they are. Once personal trust has been gained, they ask for money for a variety of emotive reasons. Both men and women are victims of this type of fraud, with the age group 40-65 appearing to be most affected. Fraudsters target the vulnerable, single, widowed, divorced; locating them using personal information uploaded on dating or social media sites. Contact is received from someone who shows an interest in pursuing a relationship. They may say they are working overseas (perhaps they are in the armed forces or working as an engineer/other professional). Gradually, a long-distance relationship is developed via email, instant messaging, texting and phone calls. The love interest may send their photograph and start using a pet name. Once the fraudsters are confident they have an individual’s sympathy and desire, they will share a problem they are experiencing and ask for help in the form of sending money to them (this could be to a UK address or one overseas). They may say they are desperate to come and visit, but need money to pay for travel costs as they have a problem in the country where they are working, or an issue with access to funds. MoneyGrams® are one of their preferred payment methods.

Where learning’s a ball
The real truth is that this individual has been targeted by criminals, probably based overseas. The user profiles they have set up are fake and the pictures received are most likely to have simply been taken from other websites. Where the warning signs of the above described situation appear, or it just doesn’t feel right – trust personal instinct. If a stranger makes an approach via social networking sites or chat rooms and then wants to continue the communication by email or messenger – do not reply. Safeguard personal privacy through keeping personal bank account details completely confidential. Under no circumstances should money be sent, regardless of the nature of their problem. Helen O’Driscoll, local Police Crime Reduction Officer advises: “nationally this type of fraud is a huge problem and here in Peterborough we are certainly seeing an increase in the number of victims. “Many people are too embarrassed to report it to the Police, but I would encourage anyone who suspects they have been a victim of this type of offence to come forward as soon as possible.” Information and advice is also available on the Action Fraud website www.actionfraud.police.uk

OUTDOOR LIFE
Family camping . . . the easy way! Picture the scene: you’ve crammed all the camping gear into the car, plus everything you need for a family camping weekend, successfully navigated your way along the busy coast roads, and endured the incessant chorus of “are we there yet?”, only to arrive at your bolthole to face one of camping’s little labours – erecting the tent! As all campers know, finding your perfect pitch then kicking back with a cold beer tent side is one of life's great pleasures . . . it's just the bit in-between that we could do without. Unwieldy poles, flimsy pegs that wouldn't stick in glue – putting up the tent can sometimes be a challenge. But thanks to the ‘rise’ of inflatable tents, such traumas could now be a thing of the past.
Inflatable tents use robust, air-filled tubes in place of pole supports. Simply hook the pump up to input valves and pump away. Most models are quick to pitch with those that use an interlinked ‘frame’ inflating in around 60 seconds from just one inlet. And for those campers with childhood memories of punctured bouncy castles, isolation valves ensure the tent remains fully inflated in the unlikely event of damage.
Inflatable tents come as one single interconnected unit (ground sheet, fly, and outer fabric). And because there are no poles, some of these tents are surprisingly lightweight and easy to pack away. So whether you're a seasoned camper or just a festival goer looking for an alternative to the pop-up, check out our round-up of the best inflatable tents on the market. Trust us; we're not just blowing hot air!

BUSINESS FOCUS
A slice of Italy in Hampton With its warm, classy and comfortable interior, and relaxed atmosphere, Hampton’s Mattoni restaurant is the perfect place to dine. Whether it is for a romantic meal with a partner, or just a catch up with family and friends, Mattoni is the perfect place to be. On arrival, my partner and I received a warm welcome from Goretti, the owner, who helped us select a bottle of wine from the extensive wine list, before showing us to our romantic, candlelit table. With the huge menu offering dishes from classic Italian pasta to chicken, steak, veal and fish, there is something to please and treat everyone’s taste buds. We opted for the Antipasto Misto for a starter, which consisted of Italian meats, vegetables, mozzarella, beef tomatoes, Italian bread for dipping and marinated olives – it was fresh and very tasty. When the main arrived it was beautifully presented and tasted divine, I had been tempted by Goretti to try the Vitello Piccata, a
12
veal steak cooked in a brandy sauce. I have never tried veal before and was not sure what to expect! But it was cooked to perfection, I will definitely be having this dish again. My partner plumped for the Pesce Spada, a seasoned swordfish loin, which again was cooked to perfection. And two empty plates were testament to the quality of the food. Next it was the dessert and coffee menu and we opted for the Amaretto Cheesecake and the Crème Brûlée, both homemade. To sum up the evening . . . it was the best meal I have had in a long time and as a Hampton resident I feel really lucky to have a gem of an authentic Italian restaurant on my doorstep.

GARDENING HOME & GARDEN
Achieving the best lawn This month, sisters Sarah and Jo Parish, who run GreenThumb Peterborough & Oundle, give more advice on lawn care as we head into summer. The welcome flurry of bank holidays in April and May encouraged people into their gardens and we’ve been busy visiting new customers who have been despairing of all their weeds and unhealthy looking grass. If you don’t have the time or know-how to put it right, don’t worry, it’s never too late to call us in to give you a lovely healthy, weed free lawn for the summer.
What can we do to help … • We’ll carry out a FREE lawn analysis to assess the condition of your lawn, the different types of weed and the ground conditions that the lawn is growing in. • We’ll agree a programme of treatments to get your lawn lush and weed free, often from as little as £15 per quarter depending on the size of the lawn. Direct debit options are available too. • It’s hassle free and there’s no more worrying about buying and storing fertilisers and weedkillers at home. Our technicians are all fully qualified to safely use the best products, in the right quantities, at the right time of year.
And you … • A regularly well mown lawn will be healthy and will naturally discourage weeds. Never cut your lawn to less than 1” and never let it get longer than 3”. This is the most common piece of advice we give to customers. • Just sit back and enjoy the results! If you’d like us to look after your lawn for you or for a FREE lawn analysis, contact Sarah or Jo on 01733 755028. Email peterborough@greenthumb.co.uk www.greenthumb.co.uk

There have been lovely netballers’ skydiving, half marathon runners, a netball tournament, a tea party, monthly match nights, shoot the hoop, Christmas jumper selfies and sweepstakes which have all contributed to the club raising just over £3,000 for Sue Ryder Thorpe Hall!

A guide to living in Hampton Your guide to
Tea and teamwork total up for Parkinson’s Awareness A tea party arranged by staff from O&H Hampton for Parkinson’s Awareness Week has raised £1,578.
Living in Hampton
The event, held at Hampton Vale Community Centre, was well supported by both local residents, and business – who donated some fantastic raffle prizes to help swell the fundraising total. O&H’s parent company has now pledged to double the total, bringing the total that will go to the Parkinson’s Society up to £3,156. But the tea party’s main aim was to help get the word out about Parkinson’s – a disease affecting one in 500 people in the UK and with no known cure. “We wanted to help people know what to look out for and, in the spirit of the 2015 Awareness week ‘Up your friendly’, encourage everyone to be kinder,” explained one of the organisers, Nikola Brown from O&H Hampton. “Showing a little patience, small acts of kindness and understanding to people with Parkinson’s and their carers, can make all the difference.” Local businesses who donated raffle prizes included Equilibrium Yoga, GKL, Adrenaline Martial Arts, Vivacity Gym and the Nene Valley Railway.
Said O&H Hampton General Manager, Roger Tallowin: “It was a team effort by everyone at O&H Hampton and we were delighted to be able to help raise awareness about Parkinson’s and support Parkinson’s Awareness Week. Living with Parkinson’s can be extremely challenging and the Hampton team are working to provide help and support to people with Parkinson’s by raising much needed funds.”
Stay safe near water this Summer
Three charities received an egg-stra boost for their work after O&H were among sponsors of a Giant Easter Egg Hunt in Peterborough city centre.
As summer arrives, it’s the time of year again when O&H Hampton get together with the emergency services to remind everyone to stay safe near water.
Local schools brought some dazzling colour to Cathedral Square with a series of giant eggs – which local businesses sponsored in aid of the Mayor’s charities: Shine, SSAFA and Little Miracles.
The team has been visiting local schools with the message to stay out of local lakes, rivers and canals. They have also been showing youngsters how to use throwlines to save lives. Explained Roger Tallowin: “As tempting as the water looks on a hot day, the only safe place to swim is in one of the local pools. People should remember that: ■ 60% of all drownings occur in canals, lakes and rivers. ■ Cold water can affect even strong swimmers. If you fall or jump into water the cold can shock your body, making your muscles seize up so you can’t move. ■ Even if you think water is shallow, the banks of a river or lake can fall away very quickly making the water deep and difficult to get out from. ■ You can drown in just a few centimetres of water. There can be many other dangers lurking below the surface of the water. You could easily cut yourself on rubbish or rocks or become ill due to the bacteria in the water.” Added Roger: “We hope we can also drive home the message that the lifesaving equipment alongside Hampton’s lakes is there for a very important reason and needs to be protected.”

Pet Dental Care Tips Just like humans, pets’ teeth need regular care and attention to keep them healthy, so we thought we’d talk a little bit about pet dental care to help you keep your pets’ teeth in tip top condition. Which pets suffer with dental problems? Smaller breeds of dogs are more prone to require dental assistance in the form of veterinary cleaning than larger breeds due to their small, close together teeth. This also makes cats equally likely to need a little bit of expert help every now and again. However, any pet with teeth can have dental issues regardless of size or breed. The good news though is that nowadays we can do lots of things to encourage healthy teeth and gums for our pet cats, dogs, rabbits and even other small furries.
Brushing Your Pets’ Teeth If your pet will let you, daily brushing is the best way to prevent dental disease. Some pets will quite happily tolerate having their teeth brushed regularly, especially if it has been introduced when they are young, however many are not so compliant. If your pet will let you brush their teeth, ensure you use pet specific toothpaste as human toothpaste, for example, contains fluoride which is toxic to dogs. For an in depth guide on how to brush a dog’s teeth visit www.pedigree.com/dentalcare/
Food, Treats & Toys If your pet experiences dental problems your vet will be able to recommend suitable diets with specific teeth cleaning properties to help reduce the need for repeat treatment. Regularly providing dental treats can also help, as long as they are appropriate for your pet’s species, breed and size. Good quality dental treats are designed so that even if your pet devours them in seconds, your 22
pet will have to chew them before they can swallow. It is the chewing of these treats that reduces tartar build up on teeth, so however rapidly they chew they will still get the benefit of having them. Provide toys with a variety of different textures and discourage the chewing of wood and sticks as this can cause damage to gums.
Smelly Breath Bad breath in pets is often caused by the bad smelling bacteria that comes with gum disease, although it can also be an indicator of abscesses or kidney problems. Whilst there are products that will help mask the smell, to truly resolve the issue you should visit your vets to find out what the underlying issue is and how to resolve it.
Behaviour Toothache is a painful thing regardless of species, however, without the evidence of a broken tooth or smelly breath, it is difficult for pets to tell us that this is the issue. Gum disease is equally painful and can lead to tooth loss. If your pet goes off their food or exhibits behaviour that is not normal for them, such as being antisocial or aggressive, it may be that they are experiencing pain and a trip to the vets for further investigation of possible causes is required.
Scale & Polish Plaque is both the cause of gum disease and the reason for tartar build up. Once these are present the only way to get rid of them is for pets to have a scale and polish under general anaesthetic. This is a minor procedure with pets returning home the same day.

SCHOOLS
Schools Hampton College
Hargate Vale Primary School
At the beginning of May Ofsted published its data dashboard for the 2014 GCSE results.
Developing the citizens and learners of the future continues to be a key theme of activities and events at Hampton Vale Primary School.
Hampton College was delighted to be in the top 20 per cent of schools on almost all measures and is ‘green rated’ as positive in all areas. 2014 really was a vintage year for student outcomes at the college! The official start to the Hampton College Summer was 1 May with students looking great in the new, optional Summer Polo Shirt. The school’s busy programme of events so far has included: The Music department hosted a Music Soiree during which a number of students performed solo numbers and duets. The evening was opened by the winners of the recent Year 9 Battle of the Bands competition and progressed to feature students from several year groups. Overall an extremely high level of performance and musicianship was demonstrated. The Junior UK Maths Challenge took place on Thursday 30 April (Years 7 and 8 top sets took part) – results coming soon. In addition to all the excitement fifteen Years 7 and 8 girls took part in a Rugby taster day at Thomas Clarkson Academy. The girls joined students from schools across the county in a taster day run by coaches from the RFU to introduce them to the game of rugby. Finally a HUGE Good Luck Year 11!
Hampton College (Primary Phase) Spotlight on Squirrels Class (Year 2) Our new summer term topic is The Seaside and we have really enjoyed reading the stories of Katie Morag who lives on a Scottish island. We have found out where the island is on a map, made our own moving picture books based on the Katie Morag stories and had great fun learning some Scottish dancing. We have started to find out about the seaside in the past and compared this to the seaside today. We had a great time being creative and making our own Punch and Judy theatres. In our literacy work we have really enjoyed writing riddles which our teachers have enjoyed solving! Along with this we have worked on our story writing skills and have written some extended stories. We had a fantastic time over at the college at our multi-skills festival, where we worked with children from Hampton Vale, Hampton Hargate and the secondary phase on different sporting activities. As we move into the final part of the year we are looking forward to more of our seaside topic, our end of term trip, our class assembly, our Year 2 production and Sports Day! So lots to look forward to as we come to the end of Key Stage One!
As the country went to the polls for the General Election, the school staged its own school election to give every child the opportunity to experience the voting process. A number of Year Five children stood as candidates and they presented their key policies at hustings events to the rest of the school. All children were then given their voting cards before they visited the school’s own polling station to cast their vote. Other Year Five children took on the roles of vote counters and returning officers. The winning party proposed that more animals be introduced to school so that children can learn how to care for them. Aside from the election, the school’s programme of special learning events has continued. In music, children from Years Three and Five enjoyed a classical music concert by the De-Note group, at which they learned more about the music of Mozart; Year Six children raised the roof during an energetic African drumming workshop. Sport and PE activities have included Year Two and Year Three children taking part in inter-schools’ sports festivals at Hampton College. A team made up of Key Stage Two children also competed in the schools’ section of the Barnack Run. Reception children have continued their tour of the world by taking in activities based on Italy and India. Their Italy work saw them painting under the table surfaces while on their backs to mirror the way in which artist Michelangelo is thought to have painted the Sistine Chapel; they also made pizzas and gelato. Later, they enjoyed a threecourse Indian meal cooked by parents and created mehndi patterns on their hands. An invasion of pirates from Year One took to the water at Grafham Water to sail to an island to look for treasure; they also completed an orienteering challenge and an obstacle course while blindfolded during their trip. Taking to the water has also been an important idea for the Year Two children, as they enjoyed their seaside learning theme; it saw a mock beach set up in the playground to help the children experience seaside life. Children in Year Three are busy becoming young historians and archaeologists as they enjoy the opportunity to handle Roman artefacts that are nearly 2,000 years old. The school is proud to report that it is only one of a very small number of primary schools in the city to have been presented with a resource box packed full of artefacts collected by experts and volunteers who worked at a Roman archaeological site in the Fulbridge Road area last year.
Hargate Primary Hampton Hargate Primary has been busy enjoying the summer term. So far we’ve had a visit from Keelan Phillips, a famous BMX rider, who performs all over the world and has won many competitions. Keelan wowed the children with his cool tricks and expertise and even got Mr Colley to perform a few cool moves on a BMX! We were gripped with election fever on 7 May! Our current Prime Minister ‘Mr Lyons’ term in office was coming to an end and there were seven eager candidates with varying manifestos waiting to fill the position.
recently and raised a large amount of money for Sue Ryder and Marie Curie!
Friday 8 May saw the anniversary of VE Day, marking 70 years since the end of the Second World War in Europe. The occasion was commemorated with events all across the UK and we joined in the celebrations at Hampton Hargate. Parents and carers were invited to come and be entertained Our Key Stage 2 children went to vote by the children who performed a short in our ‘polling room’ and after several collection of songs and readings from recounts Miss Shaw was announced the 1940s. Some staff and children as the winner! The children are now also came to school in 1940s clothing. eagerly waiting to see if the promises As part of the celebrations, Hampton made in her manifesto will come true! Parish Council, very kindly gave a small commemorative whiteboard and Congratulations to our very own Mrs pen to each child in the school.
