IN THIS ISSUE
Welcome to the June issue of your local magazine, The Hampton Gazette. We hope you have been enjoying the good spell of weather we have been having and enjoying all that Hampton has to offer. In this issue, there is a guide to keeping the younger ones entertained over halfterm, newly elected local councillors, Yaxley runners and much more. This month sees the opening of the Lido, Peterborough’s much loved outdoor swimming pool. There is also information about Open Farm Sunday, when farmers open up their gates to welcome visitors. Plus, Hampton Seniors bring us a street party to celebrate the Queen's 90th birthday. Don’t forget to mention the Hampton Gazette when responding to any of our advertisers as without them we couldn’t bring you the Gazette. Please keep your letters and photographs coming our way, these are always appreciated. Until next month,

Queen Elizabeth II, Christmas 2002. We love celebrating at the CSK Church and on Sunday 12 June during our 10am service we will be celebrating Queen Elizabeth II, the Supreme Governor of the Church of England. Every household attending the service will receive a copy of ‘The Servant Queen and the King she serves’, a tribute book written for Her Majesty’s 90th Birthday. The Queen
herself wrote the forward for the book. It’s full of great photographs and interesting information. After the service all are welcome to bring a picnic as we enjoy lunch and games together on the field opposite the church. Do come and join us as we celebrate on this special weekend. Mediation is a must! For a family lawyer, mediation is a process that most of us will encourage our clients to consider, before they instruct us in any legal formalities concerning their relationship breakdown. Attempting mediation has been compulsory now for a number of years, particularly in respect of children cases. You can’t make an application to the Court for a Child Arrangements Order as it is now known (for Residence and/or Contact) unless you have attended an appointment with the mediator who in turn will invite the other parent to participate. It is only the applicant in the Court case who has to attend mediation – unfortunately there is no such compulsion of the other parent so it is at this stage that mediation often breaks down. You will be given a certificate from the qualified mediator that you can then attach to your Court application form.
The same process applies, more or less, for the financial side of a divorce case. The spouses can save themselves legal costs by using a mediator to oversee the exchange of financial disclosure, and, if it all goes well and you feel you can negotiate on equal terms with your other half, mediation can go right through to drafting a Memorandum of Agreement which you can then take to your solicitor to turn into a consent court order. You can dip in and out of mediation whilst keeping your family solicitor instructed, so if you have any queries about this process, contact a specialist family law solicitor for advice.

New grant fund for Peterborough rural business Rural Peterborough communities and businesses looking to grow, but needing help with funding, can now apply to the Rural Peterborough and Rutland LEADER programme for financial support. Economic development company Opportunity Peterborough launched the new grant fund and support programme last November, following a successful bid to secure £1.32 million to fund and deliver support in rural Peterborough. The LEADER scheme, part of the Rural Development Programme for England, is jointly funded by the European Agricultural Fund for Rural Development (EAFRD) and the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra). Farmers, growers, businesses and community groups can now apply for LEADER funding to support projects that help to grow the rural economy in their area. Grants are also available to boost tourism, by supporting cultural and heritage activities. Steve Bowyer, Chief Executive of Opportunity Peterborough said “I would encourage any business or group to attend this event where potential applicants can learn whether they are eligible for funding and how to apply”. For full details and to register for the event please visit www.leaderfunding.co.uk or contact Sheila O’Brien on 01733 317404 or sheila.o’brien@opportunitypeterborough.co.uk
HamptonWI So, we've a had a few wonderfully warm, hazy, sunny days and I hope many of you had the opportunity to enjoy them with friends and family. Luckily for us at Hampton WI, it doesn't matter what the weather is like because we know we always have some great meetings to enjoy, come rain or shine, and over the next few months we have a girly cream tea, flower arranging and cocktail drinking at Mattonis to look forward to, plus the fun and often hilarious company of many fab ladies. We have already started the process of choosing next year's programme of meetings and once again the Hampton WI ladies and guests have come up with a treasure trove of wonderful ideas and have also voted for their favourites. Our 2017 programme looks set to be another great one. So, with this in mind, why don't you come and try us out for size? Oh, I know there are still plenty of people who think the WI is just full of old ladies but I think even our two or three 'old ladies' would have something to say about that! Some people say that they don't have the time but it's just one night of the month for 2 ½ -3 hours and I think every woman from 18-108 deserves a few hours of simple, relaxed fun and welcoming company while learning something new, with the added bonus of no pressure to be mum, girlfriend, wife, taxi driver, pin up or glamour puss! Although, if you could teach us how to be a glamour puss...? Hope to see more of you soon! Julia Harrison Hampton WI President T: 07791 741291 E: jkharrison@sky.com

ReaderLetter Inconsiderate parking Can I make a plea to those who feel it necessary to drive a few hundred yards to take their children to school, to have some consideration for the residents around Hampton Schools. Perhaps some of these inconsiderate drivers could, through Hampton Gazette, explain why they feel they have the right to inflict this suffering on residents and the environment. Vikings to invade Peterborough! Dates announced for Peterborough Heritage Festival 2016 A horde of marauding Vikings are set to invade Peterborough City Centre this summer as part of this year’s free Peterborough Heritage Festival – one of the UK’s premier history events. Vikings and Saxons will battle for control of the city in a spectacular display, recreating the attack on Peterborough in 870AD, with no quarter given or prisoners taken by either side. It will be the biggest Viking raid on the city for 1,000 years! Staged twice daily in Cathedral Square, the event will involve 100 re-enactors, and will constitute the highlight of the Festival. New dates for the main weekend of the Peterborough Heritage Festival 2016 are:
Saturday 2 – Sunday 3 July, 2016 Peterborough City Centre The Heritage Festival, now in its eighth successful year, is the UK’s only city centre multi-period living history festival. As Peterborough’s most popular event it attracted over 34,000 people last year, and remains a ‘must-see’ for anyone in the region. For more details, visit the Vivacity website at: www.vivacity-peterborough.com/festivals/pboroheritagefest2016/
The Oundle International Festival The voice is the theme of this year’s festival, but according to Kenneth Richardson, the Artistic Director, it wasn’t necessarily a conscious decision. Kenneth explains, “I didn't so much choose the theme as it chose the Festival! As I was pulling together events it became clear that vocal music, ranging from Renaissance Italy to energetic folk, smooth jazz and breathtaking opera, was dominating the programme.” Back by popular demand is the golden opportunity for local singers to participate in a workshop led by one of the best early music vocal ensembles in the world, The Marian
Consort, with the chance to be part of the choir in one of the performances (Breaking the Rules workshop on Saturday 9 July, Performance Friday 15 July). The Oundle International Festival presents an impressive 20 events over the course of eight days. There is music for all tastes: classical, reggae/ska, jazz, folk, Celtic/World and choral.
There are big names such as multiaward winning choral performers, The Gabrieli Consort, and this is the only chance to hear their acappella programme outside London, 80s legends The Beat, the exhilarating internationally-acclaimed Jamie Smith’s Mabon and the exquisite The Marian Consort who were part of the Radio 3’s line-up for the Free Thinking festival.

y friend took great care not to disturb the nesting pair whilst they were incubating their eggs. But it seems that she may have to steer clear for a while longer because blackbirds usually rear between two and three broods a year, their nesting season lasting from March to July. As was the case with my friend, blackbirds usually build their nest quite low down in hedges, shrubs and climbers, and it is the female who builds it. Made of grass, straw and small twigs the nest is lined inside with mud. Only the female incubates the eggs but both parents feed the chicks once they have hatched. The chicks leave the nest after about two weeks but apparently if the nest is disturbed they can leave and survive after only nine days! This is an anti-predatory adaption. The young birds hide on the ground, being too young too fly, and

many of us trying to be kind rescue them but they should be left alone to allow their parents to carry on feeding them. They are the most common breeding bird in Britain, with something like six million pairs and are found in every European country except Iceland. The blackbird is also the national bird of Sweden. Whilst writing this article I was reminded of the nursery rhyme ‘Sing a Song of Sixpence’. It seems that there is truth in it. Apparently in Tudor times cooks liked to add novelty to their dishes by first cooking the empty pastry pie and then inserting live creatures such as blackbirds inside, through the bottom, who would then fly out when the pie was cut: ‘Four and twenty blackbirds baked in a pie. When the pie was opened the birds began to sing. Oh wasn’t that a dainty dish to set before the king?’

or those of you who don't know who we are - we are Yaxley Runners. Despite the name, we meet every week in Hampton, Monday for seniors, and Friday for juniors. 2016 is a special year for the club as we celebrate our 30th anniversary. In that time, we must have ran what seems like millions of miles, but the philosophy of the club has remained the same over the past three decades. We're a friendly running club, open to runners of all abilities, whatever your speed. Our Monday night sessions will see sub-three hour marathon runners joined by those who will be running and walking just a mile or two. We especially enjoy welcoming people who are new to running. The thought of turning up to
a running club full of fit, fast runners (we wish!) can be pretty intimidating when you've only been lacing up your trainers for a couple of weeks and can barely run around the block without stopping. But we've all been there - everyone was new to running at some point, and we always try to ensure that newcomers are made to feel welcome. Each week we have two runners on a beginner’s rota, who will accompany any newcomers at a pace they feel comfortable with. The senior section of the club meets every Monday, at 6.30pm, at the Hampton Hargate Sports Facility, in Beaumont Way. Membership costs just £10 a year, but feel free to come along for a couple of sessions before deciding if you want to take the plunge and join!

Our Monday night sessions generally involve a different route each week, with several different options of length. Two Mondays a month we also offer the option of a structured training session with one of the club's qualified coaches. The club also meets at various venues every Thursday for a run to add a bit of variety to things! One of the things we are most proud of at Yaxley Runners is our thriving juniors section. This meets every Friday, at 6pm, and children from the age of 8 are welcome to attend. We really do have some excellent young runners at the club, and it is fantastic to see so many of them out enjoying running every week, rather
than being sat inside playing on their Xboxes or Playstations. All sessions are taken qualified UK Athletics coaches and coaching assistants, all of whom are fully CRB checked. As with the adults, membership costs just ÂŁ10 a year, and children are welcome to come along to see if they enjoy it for a couple of weeks before joining. Children of all abilities are welcome to join, we are not an elitist club in any way, so your son and daughter does not need to be the fastest in their class to come along and join in the fun! Away from our club nights, we have members taking part in races across the country every week. From marathons to
5k's, the chances are you'll see one of our yellow and green vests if you're at a race anywhere in the region. We've had some amazing results over the past year, with our members continuing to put in superb performances. Recently, our club's marathon record was broken at the London Marathon, when James Mogridge crossed the line in a fantastic time of 2:36:22. And it's not all about running! Perhaps the best part of being in a running club is the camaraderie and friendships formed, and we have a thriving social scene, with plenty of nights out and events across the year. If you're a keen runner, or you just want to give running a try, we'd love to hear from you.

Mr S contacted us regarding his existing mortgage. His mortgage was with a high street lender and he had been paying the standard variable rate for several years. After researching the market we managed to reduce his monthly mortgage payments by over £200 per month. The savings he made allowed him to book a holiday in Majorca later this year.
Mr J and Ms K wanted to get on the property market by buying a new build house using the Government’s Help to Buy scheme. Mr J had existing debt problems dating back 3 years ago with defaults totaling £30,000 and missed mortgage payments. We were able to arrange a mortgage with a specialist lender requiring a deposit of only 5%.
Mr and Mrs F had £47,000 of loans, credit cards and store cards and were paying £1,652 per month. Mr F also had some missed and late payments on his credit file due to the number of accounts he was trying to juggle every month. We were able to consolidate all their debts into a new mortgage which freed up almost £1000 every month. Have you thought of joining the Parish Council? Do you have two or three evenings a month to spare? Want to improve local facilities and really make a difference to life in Hampton Hargate and Hampton Vale?
YES? Then are you: • A British citizen, or a citizen of the Commonwealth or the European Union, and • 18 years or older on the day you become nominated for election • For the whole of the 12 months prior to nomination he/she must: 1. Have been an elector of the parish and either occupied or owned/rented premises in the parish, or 2. Resided within 3 miles of the boundary of the parish, or 3. Had his/her principal or only place of work in that area If so, you may be interested to know that we currently have three vacancies on the Parish Council following the 5 May Elections when eleven councillors were elected without a poll. Notices of the vacancy have been posted on the Parish notice boards and details of this vacancy and the appointment process are available on the Parish Council website - all we need now are some residents who are interested in joining the Council. All qualifying applicants (you cannot stand for election if you are the subject of a bankruptcy restriction order or interim order, have, within five years before the day of the election, been convicted in the United Kingdom of any offence and have had a prison sentence whether suspended or not for a period of over three months without the option of a fine or if you work for the council you want to become a councillor for) are invited to attend the Parish Meeting commencing at 7pm on Thursday 7 July at the
Tesco Community Meeting Room at Serpentine Green where they will be interviewed and asked to give a short presentation on a local issue:
What steps do the Parish Council take to deal with litter in Hampton and what alternatives/additional measures would you propose if you were co-opted on to the Parish Council? The Councillors present will then vote on their selection and will appoint their new Councillors from those who have attended and given a presentation. The successful applicant is then required to complete an Acceptance of Office and a Declaration of Interests form before taking their seat on the Council (both of these forms are lodged with the City Council Electoral Officer by the Clerk within 28 days of appointment). These records are on the City and Parish Council websites and are open to public inspection.
If you would like to register you interest please contact: The Parish Clerk, Kate Day or Deputy Clerk, Gemma Cade by telephone - 07391 497 561 during office hours (9am-1pm Mon-Thu) or e-mail clerk@hamptonpc.org.uk

Your guide to
Living in Hampton
In association with O&H Hampton
Hamptons’ natural environment The Hamptons’ natural environment is it's greatest treasure – more than 250 acres of parkland, woodland, lakes, play areas and nature reserves on residents’ doorsteps, much of which is freely open to the public. But this spring something important has changed in the Hamptons’ natural environment, and the way it will be maintained for future generations. Care and management of the Hamptons’ green spaces has been transferred from its commercial developers, O&H Hampton, to a not-for-profit company run for the benefit of residents. This move by O&H Hampton is to guarantee the long-term future of Hamptons’ green infrastructure, to ensure it is not developed on, but preserved as a public amenity and given the care it needs. The new company set up by O&H Hampton is called Hampton (Peterborough) Management Ltd. It is responsible for looking after all the green infrastructure, marked on the map [see picture top right], in partnership with residents and wildlife charities. What Hampton Peterborough Management is responsible for. The not-for-profit management company’s responsibilities include: • Landscaping, grass-cutting, tree-pruning and other environmental maintenance • Maintaining lakes, including safety and water quality
• Looking after storm water pump stations and the sustainable drainage system • Playground inspections • Health and safety, and obligatory insurance How will it be paid for? Of course, if we want our environment properly maintained and safeguarded for the future, this comes with a cost. So everyone buying a new home on the Hamptons from now on will be contributing through an annual service charge, all of which will go towards maintaining the green infrastructure for the benefit of the residents. This charge will be clearly set out in a legal agreement signed by home buyers at the time of purchase. It is not being applied retrospectively, so if you have already bought your home, it won’t apply to you as O&H will continue to fund the maintenance for these areas. If you are a prospective new home buyer, the service charge is currently set at £250 a year. This arrangement will ensure the cost is shared fairly between residents, and funding to support our green spaces is sustainable into the future.
“O&H Hampton was responsible for the original masterplan which embedded nature firmly in the Hamptons’ DNA. We want to ensure it remains a flourishing green environment long after we have stepped out of the picture. “We believe this is the fairest, most sustainable and most secure way to safeguard our vision of the Hamptons as communities growing in harmony with nature.” Roger Tallowin, O&H Hampton general manager

T
he Year 9 football team, who earlier in the year reached the last 32 of the English Schools FA competition, won the Peterborough schools final for the 3rd successive year, beating kings school 5 -3. Brad Gilbert scored another hatrick, his 4th for the school this year. HC won the Peterborough Schools Rowing competition. Peterborough High School have won the competition for the last 7 years so this was an incredible achievement. The school had an incredible success in the Peterborough Drama Festival. All HC participants gained a prize, a commendation or a distinction. Monday 25 May saw the students showcase their incredible talents at the school’s annual Musical Soiree – as always such an impressive evening.
We are very excited to be hosting a BBQ to continue the 10 Year anniversary celebrations here at Hampton College, on Saturday 18 June. All current, ex-staff and the very first year of students who attended the school are warmly invited!

Vale Primary School
Here at Hampton Hargate Primary school, we enjoyed our annual Sports Week. The sun was shining and we were able to make the most of the nice weather with our outdoor sporting activities!
Sporting success has been high on the agenda at Hampton Vale Primary School as it's children celebrate their achievements in several city events:
T
he week was jam packed with fun filled activities from the more traditional sporting fixtures such as Cricket, Tennis and Cross Country, to the more unusual Crazy Golf and Curling! The Archery was definitely a hit and the children certainly enjoyed scaling the dizzy heights of the climbing wall in the spring sunshine! The Circus Skills Workshop once again was a great end to a fantastic week! It is safe to say that the children and staff all had a thoroughly enjoyable week. Well done to Mr Godfrey and Miss Burton for organising our Sports Week and a big thank you to the children for taking part and to the people who came into the school and provided all of the interesting activities. We received some fantastic compliments from our visitors about the excellent behaviour, work and attitude to the various events. Well done to the children. In other news our Eco Warriors have been very busy creating their butterfly garden, the children enjoyed a Karate demonstration from a
• A Key Stage Two team won the Quad Athletics event and will go on to represent Peterborough in the County School Games • It's netball team took a very creditable third place among 72 teams in a Peterborough schools tournament • A group of Key Stage Two children competed in the Barnack Fun Run, with a Vale boy and girl each coming third
Y traditional Karate Academy and Year 6 have had a fantastic time on their residential – more news to follow on this! We still have lots to look forward to though – sports days, trips to London Zoo, Rutland Water, The Posh ground and Year 6 Bikeability!
ear One children also took part in a multi-sports festival at Hampton College and all children across school have been busy preparing for sports day; equally busy have been the Year Six children, who took part in an African drumming session as part of their theme work about Africa. Elsewhere in school, history learning has been brought to life through 'History Off the Page' experience days for the Year Five children as part of their Tudors learning, and for the Year Four children as part of their learning about ancient Greece. Year Four children developed further their knowledge about the Romans during a trip to Peterborough Museum. All things on wheels have been the focus of the Reception children’s learning; the children brought into schools their own bikes and scooters to complete obstacle courses around the playground. The children also explored the teachers’ cars, pretending to drive them and finding out more about their mechanics. Maths Week saw children across school planning and preparing their own bread recipes, many linked to their theme learning, the children in Year Five, for example, baked bread based on Tudor recipes.

Use a long eyeshadow brush or pencil and follow the lines, like the diagram, on your face: A. Where the brow begins B. The highest part of the brow C. Where the brow ends D. Both ends should be the same length
Keep them trim There are so many ways now that you can keep your eyebrows perfect, here are three for you to consider. • Waxing - My favourite! It's quick, relatively pain free (and I'm quite a whimp when it comes to beauty treatments) and the finish is clean and defined. Prices start around £6 and will last approximately 3 weeks. • Threading - becoming more and more popular. The beauty therapist twists thread over the eyebrows and it catches each hair individually and pulls them out. Incredibly accurate leaving a very clean finish that lasts. It's affordable and convenient and with many booths set up in shopping centres, you can get it done while you're out and about without having to make an appointment. Prices start around £5. • Eyebrow shaping - Especially helpful if you want to reshape your eyebrows. A good beautician can shape them perfectly using tweezers. It takes a little more time than the other treatments but you're left with the perfect shape that can easily be maintained. Prices start around £8. In July's issue I'll be looking at different ways to fill your eyebrows in. So until then, check out my blog and have a good month.

Lose weight and inches with a detox body cleanse Look better and feel great in just nine days with this expertlydevised cleansing plan. Designed to kick-start the F.I.T. programme, cleanse your body and adjust your mindset. C9 provides the perfect starting point for transforming your diet and fitness habits. Based around Forever’s bestselling Aloe Vera Gel drink, this nutritionally-balanced programme will allow you to see real results in just nine days. "I did the C9 detox diet and absolutely loved it. After the over indulgence of Christmas my eating habits just got worse so I decided to do the C9 cleanse to detox but also to re think my eating habits. By day 3 I had a surge of energy and my skin looked and felt better. It’s very easy to follow and helped me eat healthily again. I was amazed to have lost 10lbs by the end of it but more importantly I felt detoxed! I still drink the Aloe Vera gel as the health benefits are immense. I have since had friends who have gone on to do the C9 and have loved it as well." A.Lewis, Hampton Vale

Celebrating the Queen’s 90th Birthday Our longest reigning monarch, Queen Elizabeth II, turned 90 years old in April this year. Celebrations will take place in the capital on 10-12 June to mark this momentous occasion, and we want to make sure Hampton joins in the fun!
T
he Parish Council has sponsored a number of fantastic projects and events, to help the whole community get in the spirit. We started things off in March with an art competition for Hampton’s primary school pupils. Our wonderful, creative children produced hundreds of entries with some really beautiful cards and posters! We helped fund projects in each of the schools, giving pupils and staff a chance to mark the occasion. Hargate Primary held a ‘street party’ style event, as did Hampton College Primary Phase; inviting Clayburn Court residents to
join in the fun. Vale Primary planted a beautiful memorial garden and Hampton College will be awarding community minded pupils with a 'Queen’s Award'. On Saturday 11 June, Hampton Seniors will host a “Queen’s Birthday Tea Party” 2pm – 4:30pm at Vale Community Centre, sponsored by the Parish Council. Tickets are £5 and are available at Vale Community Centre. All proceeds will go to local teenager Summer’s wheelchair fund. On Sunday 12 June, Christ the Servant King Hampton Church will hold their 10am service, with a special commemorative gift for each
family, followed by a Community Picnic on the green opposite the Church. Hampton Vale Community Centre will follow with a Family Fun afternoon, 2–5pm, sponsored by Hampton Parish Council, Serpentine Green and Hampton Vale Community Association. This free event for all the family will have an afternoon tea style street party with performances by Peterborough Young Singers, YEM Theatre Group, a visit from Princess Elsa, crafts, bouncy castle and much more! Please come join in the fun, see you there!

FOOD & DRINK
Let’s get barbecuing Build a pyramid shape with the charcoal and insert charcoal firelighters. Light and wait for 30 minutes. Use a barbecue tool to spread out the charcoal. It’s not ready for cooking until the coals are white.
Be patient
The biggest mistake is to start cooking before the charcoal is ready. If your barbecue party starts at 7.00, light the barbecue at 6.30.
Storage
Store your charcoal in a cool dry place. A garage or shed is ideal but it must be off the floor. A plastic dustbin is ideal. Proper storage will eliminate the use of starter fluids.
Tightwad or recycling?
When you have finished cooking, close the lid of the barbecue and close the air vents. In the morning you will be able to salvage some left over charcoal. Just place in a plastic throw-away shopping bag and shake. All the dust will have come off the charcoal and it will be ready to use again.
Additional safety points to remember • • • • •
Barbecue safety Choosing a barbecue
There are many different types of barbecue on the market. Whichever one you choose, keep safety in mind. Besides the normal charcoal models, you can also purchase calor gas ones and do-it-yourself kits. Make sure your barbecue is sturdy as barbecues become deceptively hot and many cheaper models are extremely unstable. Look out for sharp edges and follow assembly instructions very carefully. Look for a barbecue with a fat collector to minimise smoke emissions and potential fire risk. Barbecue position Position the barbecue well away from fences and trees. Ensure the site is level and not situated in a position where the barbecue can be knocked over. Consider your neightbours. Site the barbecue away from their homes. Do not disturb them with smoke or noise. (You can always invite them!) Lighting up Always use the correct materials and fuels for lighting the barbecue and observe the manufacturer’s instructions. Look for child-
CREATE THE PERFECT BBQ proof caps when buying lighter fuel and always replace the cap after use. Never pour lighter fuel onto hot coals even if they appear to have gone out. Keep combustible materials and matches away from the barbecue. Food preparation & cooking Keep all utensils and plates for cooked foods separate from those used for uncooked food. All frozen food must be completely defrosted before cooking on a barbecue. Meat and other high risk foods should be kept in a refrigerator until needed. Barbecues tend to char food on the outside and leave the centre raw. All meat should be cooked thoroughly but portions of chicken and other poultry need particular care. It may be a good idea to pre-cook meats by conventional methods before finishing off on the barbecue. Food should not be left in the sunshine. To prevent contamination by insect pests, all food should be placed in sealed containers and be kept off the ground. Only kettle-style barbecues are suitable for cooking joints and whole chickens. Other types will not cook the meat thoroughly. Use a meat thermometer to check that the meat is cooked properly.
To minimise accidents, ensure children are under constant supervision and never leave the barbecue unattended. Glassware is breakable and can be dangerous. Use plastic or disposable beakers and plates. Ensure suitable fire fighting equipment is close at hand, e.g. garden hose/bucket of sand. Dispose of refuse in a covered bin so as not to attract insects and vermin. Never put hot ashes directly into a dustbin. Wait until they have cooled down.
Makes 4 skewers
Ingredients 1 skinless and boneless chicken breast ½ green pepper (cut into big cubes) ½ yellow pepper (cut into big cubes) ½ red pepper (cut into big cubes)

Top tip
Chicken Kebabs
Marinade: 1 ½ tablespoons olive oil 1 ½ tablespoons lemon juice ½ – 1 teaspoon paprika (if you like spicy, use 1 teaspoon) ½ teaspoon chilli flakes ½ teaspoon ground cumin seeds ¼ of one small onion 2 cloves garlic ¼ teaspoon salt 1 tablespoon chopped fresh parsley leaves (or dried parsley)
32
If you use bamboo skewers, soak them in cold water overnight so they don’t get burned during the grilling process.
For cooking 2 tablespoons olive oil (for brushing) Method Cut the chicken into small cubes (a total of 16 pieces), pat dry and marinate with the ingredients for at least 1 hour, best if left in the fridge overnight. Thread four pieces of chicken meat with one piece of each of the peppers onto a metal skewer or bamboo skewer. Repeat the same and make four skewers. Set aside. Grill the chicken kebab on your BBQ until cooked. While grilling, brush the chicken and bell peppers with olive oil. Serve hot.
Cooking ish on the BBQ Cooking fish in sealed foil packages has to be one of the most foolproof barbecue seafood recipes. It’s also great for feeding a crowd as the packages can be pre-prepared and taken straight from the refrigerator to the barbecue.

RECIPE
Recipe Avocado and Poached Egg on Toast
TASTY HOME COOKING
A simple but oh so tasty summery breakfast or light supper
Preparation time: 10 minutes
Ingredients • 4 fresh eggs • 2 ripe avocados • Juice of one lemon • 1 tsp chilli flakes or 1/2 red chilli, finely chopped • 4 thick slices bread, toasted (sourdough bread is wonderful if you can get it)
Cooking time: 10 minutes Serves: 4 people
Method Heat a pan of lightly salted water to a simmer. Crack one of the eggs into a cup, then make a whirlpool with a spoon in the water and carefully tip the egg into the water. Repeat with a second egg. Cook each egg for 3-4 minutes until white is barely set. Remove eggs with a slotted spoon and drain on kitchen paper. Bring the water back to a simmer and repeat with remaining eggs. Meanwhile, halve and de-stone avocados. In a large bowl, roughly mash avocados, lemon juice and chilli. Season to taste. Spread the avocado mixture over the toast, top each serving with an egg and serve immediately.

GARDENING

Lawn care TIPS This month sisters Sarah and Jo Parish who run GreenThumb Peterborough & Oundle give their top tips on lawn care as we head into summer.
T
he welcome flurry of bank holidays in April and May encouraged people into their gardens and we’ve been busy visiting new customers who have been despairing of all their weeds and unhealthy looking grass. If you don’t have the time or know-how to put it right, don’t worry, it’s never too late to call us in to give you a lovely healthy, weed free lawn for the summer.
What can we do to help? We’ll carry out a FREE lawn analysis to assess the condition of your lawn, the different types of weed and the ground conditions that the lawn is growing in. We’ll agree a programme of treatments to get your lawn lush and weed free, often from as little as £15 per quarter depending on the size of the lawn. Direct debit options are available too. It’s hassle free and there’s no more worrying about buying and storing fertilisers and weedkillers at home. Our technicians are all fully qualified to safely use the best products, in the right quantities, at the right time of year.
And you? A regularly well-mown lawn will be healthy and will naturally discourage weeds. Never cut your lawn less than 1” and never let it get longer than 3”. This is the most common piece of advice we give to customers. Just sit back and enjoy the results!
If you’d like us to look after your lawn for you or for a FREE lawn analysis, contact Sarah or Jo on 01733 755028. Email peterborough@greenthumb.co.uk

Grab yourself a bargain Question If I own a property, can I assign all of the income to my children but retain the ownership of the property? The children would then pay zero income tax as the rental income is within their personal allowance. Answer You can do so, but it will not be effective for tax purposes – you will still be liable to income tax on this rental income. Even if you were to transfer the property ownership to them, as long as they are under 18 and unmarried and the income is more than £100 per year, you will still be liable to income tax on this income. This is due to the “settlements” rules.

Directors’ Liabilities and Protections Company directors in limited companies may be held personally liable for the actions of the company, including other directors, “shadow directors” and non-executive directors. Directors face many risks and liabilities that may result in penalties, fines, disqualification and imprisonment for acts and omissions not only committed by themselves, but also by others. The Companies Act 2006 lays down seven statutory duties of directors which are owed to the company and also to shareholders. Only shareholders are protected against personal loss by limited liability companies – not directors. All directors should therefore be aware of their duties and responsibilities and avoid illegal acts, acting beyond their powers and failing to use sufficient skills and care. Practical Tip File returns and pay tax on time to avoid personal liability for company tax bills and NICs. Have insurance in place to protect the director acting on company business.
