All Change at Hampton Health
Angel Security
After 16 years at the helm as Practice Manager of Hampton Health, Leona Charity is taking a very well earned retirement. Leona's replacement at the Practice is Mr William Symons who paid tribute to all that she achieved, not least for steering the Practice through its CQC inspection in April last year when it was recognised as providing 'good care' to its patients. We also welcome two new partners to the practice; a husband and wife team, Dr Salman Khan and his wife Dr Saima Khan. Both doctors have been working at the practice for over a year so are already known to many of our patients. This practice, along with many others, recently received
some additional money from the government to provide additional appointments to patients for the remainder of the financial year. We have used this funding to provide 20 additional nurse appointments and up to 50 additional appointments with our GPs each week. However, in this constantly changing NHS we have to announce the end of the E-consult initiative which some of you will have found helpful. Locally the take up of the service did not warrant the cost of renewing it. The funding for this will cease on the 1 March.

Hampton Allotments Fancy growing your own fruit and veg? Fed up with supply issues at the shops?
W
hy not give growing your own a go? Hampton Hargate and Hampton Vale allotments have full and half plots available and starting your homegrown revolution in late winter/early spring makes it much easier to prepare your beds and personalise your plot. Getting stuck in now means you can sow peas, carrots, lettuces, parsnips, spring onions, broad beans and spinach and enjoy great tasting food for the rest of the year. You could even keep chickens on your plot and never need to buy eggs from the supermarket again.
Both sites are also looking for enthusiastic committee members to help with exciting community events and plot development. All you need are a few spare hours a month and you could be the next Monty Don! Allotments are ideal for keen gardeners, young families and retirees. If you want to taste the fruits of your own labour (pun intended), simply contact us at hhcag@hotmail.co.uk (Hampton Hargate) or hvallotments@gmail.com (Hampton Vale) to get started. Annual rent begins at just £30 and you don’t need to be a gardening expert to grow, grow, grow - just a pair of wellies and a spade will do.

I have been living in Peterborough for 12 years. After living in Hampton Vale for 8 years I found that I had time to devote to helping my local community. I was delighted to be co-opted on to the Parish Council in 2016. I am passionate about Green energies and have extensive experience in Education, Management, Finance, Law and Accounting. I will endeavour to continue to help the residents of Hampton get the best the Parish Council can offer in terms of funding, grants, and other opportunities. I would urge anyone who feels that the Parish Council can help them, in any way, to get in touch. I would use my experience, knowledge and time to make our community a better place to live.
Hampton Seniors January and February are behind us, the spring bulbs are starting to show and best of all, the daylight is getting longer ...the signs for spring are there though. We are starting to prepare for our first trip out of the year. Not sure where it will be, but more on that soon. In the next couple of weeks, my attention will be on the allotment; time to plant the potatoes as had a great harvest last year. Contact Dianne Dearden for further details 07790 872999
Christ the Servant King 1 March is the beginning of Lent; that time of the year when many of us consider giving up little luxuries, from chocolate to Facebook, if you’re feeling very brave! Lent gives us a chance to remember what’s important in life and Christians recall the time when Jesus gave up food for 40 days in the wilderness, before beginning his public ministry. But Jesus didn’t only give something up, he spent time with his Father God in prayer. At CSK we are prioritising prayer this Lent, and beyond, with a new dedicated prayer space. It will be in the main church building and is open any time Chimes Coffee Shop is open (Tues-Sat, 9am to 4pm). There will be a range of activities to help you pray, from candles to chalkboards. You can pop in to write a quick T: 01733 248236 Facebook: /cskhamptonchurch
prayer or stay as long as you’d like to. Take some time out in the busy pace of life and our hectic world to just be still and reflect and listen. Discover for yourself how exciting it is to meet with God in prayer. If you would like us as a church to pray for something or somebody on your behalf, we have a prayer box in which you can post your requests. We will be looking at the whole subject of prayer in our regular Sunday morning services at 10am during Lent. You would be most welcome to join us at any service. Every Blessing, Sylvia

Youth club in Hampton? Recently on the Facebook page there has been discussion about whether or not there should be a youth club in the Hampton area.
A
youth club is simply a place or organisation that provides leisure activities for young people to participate in. I contacted David Seaton, a local councilor and asked his opinion on whether or not a youth club should possibly be placed and if yes, would teenagers be able to benefit from it? He said: "In simple terms, yes, as there will always be teenagers who just want to hang out with friends and enjoy social activities.
It strengthens friendships and the interaction with those older than themselves would help them understand how taking on responsibility within a community can be very positive." David also thought that there isn't a problem where teenagers hang out on the streets too much but it can be intimidating for some people. There can always be a small number who will cause trouble. Talking about the sorts of activities, David stated he thinks it would be up to the organisers
and teenagers to decide but it would be great to see some support in the local care homes or involved in organising wider social events for the community and other teenagers. I also thought it would be good to speak to someone from the Hampton Parish council, but as yet, I haven’t heard back from them. Hopefully, by the next issue, I will be able to add in in a follow up. Youth clubs have been successful in other places as
they help teenagers to form better relationships within the community, more than they did before when it may have been a bit harder. They can further benefit the young people's lives because they can interact with people they may have never met and might even make friends for life. There are many different opinions on this matter, but do you think this would be an asset to the local area or is there no need for it?

Tough new laws for mobile use behind the wheel As tempting as it may be to send that quick text or make that short call on your mobile – it is now worth remembering more than ever, that as well as being dangerous - using your phone whilst driving could cost you dearly.
T
ough new laws brought in from 1st March by police forces around the country will see those caught using their phone at the wheel facing a £200 fine and six points on their licence. If they are caught a second time, they would face a minimum six-month driving ban and would also be summoned to appear in court where they could be fined up to £1,000. We have all seen the disturbing news footage and images in the newspapers in recent weeks and months of what can happen when using a mobile phone whilst driving. These new changes will have a significant impact on young drivers in particular as they risk having their driving licence revoked following a first offence, and will require them to retake their test. Motorists will no longer be offered the opportunity to go on a driver awareness course. It is illegal to use a mobile phone, held in the hand, whilst driving or while stopped with the engine on.
by Eileen Le Voi
But while it has been illegal since December 2003, research shows there has been a worrying shift in attitudes to mobile phone use behind the wheel. The RAC recently surveyed 1,714 motorists and 31% said they used a handheld phone behind the wheel compared with just 8% in 2014. The number of drivers who said they sent a message or posted on social media rose from 7% to 19%, while 14% said they had taken a photograph or video while driving. While to some it may seem acceptable to punch in those digits whilst driving, however, it has been proven that just for a couple of seconds of distraction, the consequences can be devastating.
Safe Local Trades is among the many organisations supporting this new law and the nationwide awareness campaign with the messages #itcanwait #dontriskit.
Safe Local Trades can recommend trusted and reliable tradespeople across a wide range of areas – all of which come with a customer seal of approval. Go to www.safelocaltrades.com or telephone 01733 530019 10

Meal ticket for life? There are three main areas to consider when dealing with the financial aspects of divorce proceedings: capital (property and investments), pensions and income. Equalising income is rarely possible because usually neither the husband nor wife will have sufficient earnings to share between them in this way. There is also an expectation from the courts that spouses should use their earning capacity to a reasonable degree, which means that a wife, to which this applies more frequently than to a husband, has to somehow find paid employment to help make ends meet. In general terms, the courts do not like orders for ongoing spousal maintenance and prefer a clean break. A recent case that reached the Court of Appeal has shown however that spousal maintenance is alive and well and can even be
liable to increase 15 years after divorce. 51 year old Maria Mills, as well as having a lump sum of £230,000 in 2002 in her divorce settlement, received £1,100 a month maintenance. She has just succeeded in convincing the Court of Appeal that, despite having squandered her capital, she should receive another £441 a month maintenance. On Mr Mills side, he was able to keep his estate agency business intact. Arriving at a fair financial settlement in divorce proceedings can be tricky – it’s best to ask the experts in what should be a once in a lifetime event that you need to get right first time.

HARD DAY'S NIGHT FOR DEMENTIA CARE
24-hour sponsored cycle raises funds Staff and residents from Clayburn Court care home in Peterborough recently raised over £400 for a good cause by taking part in a 24-hour sponsored cycle.
T
he staff and residents from Anchor’s Clayburn Court care home on Clayburn Road took it in turns to cycle on a static bike to raise money for the home while it works towards dementia care accreditation called Anchor Inspires. Residents had a choice of using the small foot pedals alongside the bike or to have a go on the spin bike itself. The group started the ride at 7am on Thursday 19 January, and finished their challenge at 7am on the Friday. In totoal, 32 people took part, with residents' family members even dropping by to help out. Jess Morton, Activity Coordinator at Clayburn Court said: “The event was a big success! We also dressed up in ‘onesies’ and silly outfits to help keep people’s spirits up.” “We’re all doing this because it’s a worthwhile cause. Anchor Inspires accreditation is awarded to care homes delivering the highest standards of dementia care.” Susan added: “It really was a team effort. It shows what a great community we’ve built here at Clayburn Court. We’re very thankful to local charity Vivacity for donating a static bike for us to use and to all those who sponsored us.” For more information on Clayburn Court, contact 0845 140 2020. to a 12-piece brass band and the staple of the festival, local rock and pop bands. A major new feature this year is the Community Marquee. This will provide us all with those feelings from days gone by, with cake bake competitions, cooking demonstrations from Chef James, a photography competition judged by Marc Wheatley, flower arranging demonstrations and so much more. For the first time this year we have partnered with a local charity to further extend our commitment
to our community. LPUK (Little People UK) is a charity co-founded by Sammy Davis and our very own patron Warwick Davis. LPUK provides support and information to people of short stature and their families. They are dedicated to improving the quality of life for people with dwarfism while celebrating with great pride, little people’s contribution to social diversity. Of course, none of this could happen without the amazing volunteers who spend the weekend
working with us for you. From helping to setup on the Wednesday and Thursday, assisting visitors over the weekend or the band of litter pickers on Monday who help us return the field to its pre festival state. If you would like to ďŹ nd out more about what is going on at the festival or would like to volunteer some time over the weekend, contact me via the Yaxley Gazette Facebook page or through the Yaxley Gazette.
Keep your eyes peeled for further announcements regarding the Yaxley Festival 2017

PUT THE SPRING BACK IN YOUR STEP AROUND THE HAMPTONS! The Hamptons are ideal for walking and cycling with a variety of routes to suit a gentle stroll or leisurely bike ride with friends and family through to more demanding courses for those looking for a challenge. Walking routes There are 9 routes offered across Hargate and Vale Lakes, Robins Wood, and Crown Lakes Country Park. Walk4life provides details on these including almost 60 walks across Peterborough. For a leisurely stroll, a lap of Crown Lakes Country Park is just over one mile and whether it’s cold or warm, the scenery and rich population of animals, birds, insects and plantlife provide for a very pleasant walk. If this isn’t quite enough to get your blood pumping, the walk can be extended by following the Green Wheel from the east side of London Road. A route has been mapped with Travel Choice and a PDF can be downloaded from the Hampton website. To make this walk even more interesting there is now an audio
tour available via the Hampton website which gives a real feel for how Crown Lakes came to life. Though Hampton Nature Reserve is out of bounds to the public (due to it being a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI)) Froglife, who manage the reserve, undertake Butterfly Walks between April and September. This is an amazing opportunity to get out into the reserve and see the butterflies, day flying moths, and maybe some lizards, grass snakes or a great crested newt too! As part of the walk, supervised by Froglife wardens, you can help collect vital data for the National Butterfly monitoring scheme.
Walking groups Every week on a Tuesday morning at 11am, the Hampton Vale walk takes place for those
looking for some good company while having a relaxing walk. More information can be found on the Walking for Health website where there are details for other Peterborough walking groups too.
Cycle routes The Hamptons are lucky to be part of the Peterborough Green Wheel cycle network. These routes have been developed to provide safe routes for those wishing for either a rural or urban adventure. The latter is ideal for anyone who works in Peterborough and is lucky enough to cycle to work. The routes are downloadable from the Hampton website as a PDF to keep on your phone or to print. Crown Lakes Country Park is on national cycle network route 12 and the Peterborough cycling,
leisure route 5. The Crown Lakes link is a circular route around Peterborough centre and takes around one hour and 30 minutes to complete. This is also available as a PDF.
Keeping safe There are some great walking and cycling routes available in the Hamptons and the surrounding area and a key element of developing these routes was to ensure they provided you with safety. Whether walking or cycling, be mindful that the lakes are not supervised so keep vigilant, especially of little ones.
Further information All of the maps are downloadable from the Hampton website. Why not make 2017 the year you conquer all of the routes?

It's a bugs life! Buglife - The Invertebrate Conservation Trust, based in Ferry Meadows, Peterborough is the only charity in Europe devoted to the conservation of all invertebrates, and is actively working to save Britain's rarest bugs, bees, butterflies, ants, worms, beetles and many more fascinating invertebrates.
B
uglife has a wealth of activities for children and adults available via Buglife’s website, from things to make and colour in, right up to important surveys you can join in for rare species. Gardening for bees in spring Now is the time of year to think about creating homes for our solitary bees. Hollow tubes are perfect for nesting solitary bees that use the holes as a nest site for their young. They lay eggs in the holes and then seal them up with a clump of chewed mud or a leaf. There are many solitary bee homes available in the shops. Sadly, not all are effective, so if buying a bee home, the key things to consider are depth of the nesting tubes, which
must be at least 10cm and the diameter of the tubes should range between 6 and 10mm. Alternatively, now is the time to make your own using old garden canes, string and a saw. Cut the bamboo canes into 1020cm long pieces. Tie the canes together in a bundle to create your hotel. Shop bought or home made, hang the hotel in a sunny but sheltered part of your garden, at around 1.5m above the ground, as near to a south facing aspect as possible. On the side of a shed or on a wooden trellis is ideal. Watch and enjoy your bee hotel and remember solitary bees cannot sting. As the weather warms in spring, solitary bees will use the holes to nest, but it could take them a year to find it.

Five tips for a great lawn: Go carefully on your first cut Raise the height of your first cut to just ‘top’ the grass – too low will stress the grass just when it needs encouraging. Check your blade is sharp blunt blades shred the grass and don’t give a clean cut. This may cause a brown, bruised appearance and can lead to the onset of disease.
Lawns don’t like shade Border plants, shrubs and trees all have a habit of encroaching on the lawn and denying it light … time to get the secateurs out!

s ’ a h t n a Sam story I was about to turn 25, and over 25 stone, when I decided to change my life
G
rowing up, I was always overweight. I didn’t mind until the bullying started in secondary school which made me start eating even more for comfort. At 19 I met someone and after a few months decided to move 100 miles away from home for a new life without the support of friends and family nearby. It was the loneliest time of my life so I turned to food more than ever. One day, I woke up and decided enough was enough. I was unhappy with my life and knew it wasn’t going to get better unless I changed. I’d heard about Cambridge Weight Plan but always made excuses not to
start, however, I knew I couldn’t carry on living my life not even knowing what I really looked like underneath the layers of fat. As the weight fell off me, I began to notice how people were treating me differently. A highlight for me was fitting on all of the rides at Thorpe Park, it was such a good feeling after being kicked off a rollercoaster in 2008 for being too big! Having lost 16½ stone now, my life has changed so much! I can honestly say that for the first time in my life, I appreciate myself and feel free. I feel like my life has only just started and I am so excited to see what the future holds.

Teeth whitening is a form of dentistry and should only be performed by a dentist or another regulated dental professional, such as a dental hygienist or dental therapist, on the prescription of a dentist. Some beauty salons offer teeth whitening, but this is illegal if there's no dental professional present, and it may put your oral health at risk. You can also buy DIY home teeth whitening kits but these may also carry risks. Another solution for discoloured or stubborn stains on teeth is Veneers. Veneers make teeth look natural and healthy. Because they are very thin and are held
in place by a special, strong adhesive, very little preparation of the tooth is needed. Some types of veneers don't need any preparation at all. Dentures Dentures are removable false teeth made of acrylic or metal. They are fitted over the gums to replace missing teeth and address problems caused by gaps. Missing teeth can cause problems with eating, speech and smile. If you have an ill-fitting denture, it can stabilize it by implant-retained dentures. Botox and dermal fillers Botox (antiwrinkle treatment) is used to treat eye wrinkles, forehead lines and frownlines. Fillers are used to treat marionette lines, nasiolabialfolds and also for lip enhancement. Anti wrinkle and filler treatments have revolutionised the cosmetic industry due to their remarkable results combined with very few risks and no recovery time.

Mother'sDay Day Gifts 26 March
Mother's Day is very special time to let your mother how much you appreciate everything she has done for you all year, so why not show her how much you care with a thoughtful gift? Whether it's a traditional gift like delicious chocolates or sumptuous perfumes and fragrances, you're sure to find something she'll love here.
Mother’s Day You may not realise, but Mother’s Day happens on the fourth Sunday of Lent and originally had religious traditions attached to it. In the sixteenth century, it was a celebration of the ‘mother church’ and people would return to the church in which they were baptised or where they attended as a child. Thus families would be reunited. This was known as going ‘a mothering ‘or Mothering Sunday. It was commonplace for the Lent fast which prohibited sweet, rich foods and meat to be lifted a little and for a Simnel cake to be shared. Years later, youngsters working as servants were given an annual day off to visit their mothers and would take gifts. This was called ‘Mothers Day.’ The celebrations of Mothering Sunday and Mother’s Day have generally combined into one annual occasion.

The first official Mother’s Day was organised by Ann Jarvis in 1908 in West Virginia as a memorial to her mum. By the 1920’s however Ann had become disillusioned by the commercialism of the day and especially the common use of printed greetings cards. Celebrating the day became less popular. It wasn’t until the second World War when soldiers wanted to acknowledge their distant mothers, that the day grew in popularity once more. By Susan Brookes- Morris

EDUC ATION Hampton College (Secondary Phase) Firstly a big welcome to John Gilligan who we have warmly welcomed as Head of School to Hampton College Secondary Phase. “January is a strange time to join a new school and the wait since I was appointed in July has been a long one, but it has certainly been worth it. In my short time at HC I have been extremely impressed by the overwhelming dedication of the staff and the positivity, sense of purpose and politeness of the students. They are all, clearly, a very talented bunch. I have spent much time out and about, popping into lessons, interacting with students informally and as part of Student Council and House Councils, and chatting with parents at
both the Parent Council and at parents’ evenings, finding out what makes HC good and what it needs to become great. I feel I have settled in well and am very much looking forward to building on the many strengths of the College to ensure HC is outstanding in every way.” We are well into the Spring term with regards to the sporting programme for lessons and extra-curricular activities. Participation rates for ‘out of hours’ clubs and sessions remain as high as ever. Our new catering providers, Cucina, have just celebrated their first year with us and are still exceeding our expectations in terms of the quality and presentation of the food.
A massive congratulations to the three Year 11 students who are in the running to win the Tycoons in Schools nationwide enterprise competition. They have been invited by Peter Jones CBE to attend the award ceremony at Buckingham Palace. The boys officially launched their business idea, Indulge, which produces handmade bathbombs, to the market in October. Indulge were one of the eight teams that stood out amongst over 150 teams taking part in the competition from across the UK. The budding young tycoons received £122 as a start-up loan from the Peter Jones Foundation and had a final profit ratio of a fantastic 556%.

Hampton Tiddlers What a busy couple of months we have had at Hampton Tiddlers! It has been great to see so many familiar and new faces joining us for our sessions. The end of January saw us run a new activity 'Meet the animals'. Dobbies hosted the session which proved a great success, with our Tiddlers getting
Little Acorns the opportunity to get up close to guinea pigs, rabbits, hamsters, fish and birds. We would like to say a huge thank you to Dobbies and volunteer Wendy for organising this event. Our fun activities continued throughout February with various crafts including getting romantic for Valentine's Day, nursery rhymes, story time, a great Boogizoo taster session, plus our planting with Dobbies session. Be sure to check out our planner for March on Facebook. We have World Book Day on the 2nd March so will be running a special story time with a visit from our popular hungry caterpillar friend! We are continually looking to strengthen our fun, sociable team of volunteers so if you think you would enjoy getting involved in our sessions and expanding your friendship network please get in touch by e-mail to hamptontiddlers@gmail.com

Hargate Primary We have had a busy term at Hampton Hargate Primary School. Year 6 have been learnt some First Aid techniques with a visit from the Red Cross. They have also been on a visit to the local church CSK. Reception children have been learning about people who help us and enjoyed a visit from PC O’Brien and PC Ward. The children were investigating the mysterious disappearance of some scooters and thought that with the help of some real experts they would be able to solve this mystery! They were able to experience sitting in a police car and even tried on the handcuffs! All their efforts paid off when they finally discovered who had taken the scooters! It was our very own Miss Moss who confessed to taking them as she wanted to play on them. The scooters have now been given back and the case has been closed! Thank you to PC O’Brien and PC Ward for giving up their time to come and help us. Year’s 1 & 2 meanwhile had a fantastic visit to the Peterborough museum.

Dog Leads By Graham Sykes
Are you frustrated with people judging your dog just because of their breed, when in fact they have nothing to worry about? Do you have a dog that isn't...
T
here is a nationally recognised scheme for dog owners called the " Traffic Light System", for those not familiar with it, the system is a colour coded collection of dog collars, leads, harnesses and coats to forewarn other dog owners, or non dog owners about your dogs personality. The collars , leads, harnesses, coats also have messages embroidered on them reinforcing the message, Orange for example has "No Dogs".
Orange: Likes humans but not other dogs, so give me a bit of space.
Yellow: Adopt me, advertises the fact the dog is available for adoption.
Green: Friendly and enjoys meeting other dogs and people.
Yellow: Nervous dog, give the dog space, may not like being petted, approached etc.
Purple: Do not feed, dog may have an allergy, be on a diet etc.
Dark Blue: Training in progress, dog not fully trained.
Red: Caution do not approach, either humans or dogs.
White: The dog is blind, so be careful not to startle the dog.
Bright Blue: Service dog, is being used for a specific duty.
White: Deaf dog, it is unable to hear you. These products make your dog walks a lot safer for you and your faithful friend, if everyone used the products it would prevent many unpleasant incidents. www.friendlydogcollars.com/about-us

Eggs Benedict Treat mum to a well-deserved break and a lot of pampering this Mother's Day. Start her day with breakfast in bed with this quick and simple and classic Eggs Benedict recipe. If you’re not a fan of ham you can swap this by using spinach, salmon or bacon.
5. Transfer it to a heatproof jug and keep warm in a pot of warm water while you poach the eggs.
How to make the hollandaise sauce
Time to poach the eggs
1. Place three egg yolks in a heatproof bowl with one tablespoon cold water; whisk for one to two minutes, until the mixture becomes light and frothy. 2. Place the bowl over a pan of barely simmering water but don't let the bowl touch the water because if the egg mixture gets too hot, they may scramble as they heat. 3. Continue to whisk for another one or two minutes until warmed and slightly thickened. 4. Slowly add softened butter cubes, one at a time, whisking continually until mixture thickens. 5. Season well with salt and lemon juice.
1. Bring a wide, deep pan of water and 1 tablespoon vinegar to the boil - the vinegar will help the eggs to set quicker. 2. Lower the heat and use a spoon to stir the simmering water to create a swirl. 3. Crack each egg into a separate ramekins or small bowls. Gently slide the eggs into the water, one at a time. 4. Cook until the egg white has set but the yolk is soft and runny, about two minutes. 5. Use a slotted spoon to carefully scoop out the poached eggs. Drain on kitchen paper to remove any excess water.
To serve: Butter the toast, arrange ham on top of each slice, then top with a poached egg. Spoon the hollandaise sauce over the top of the poached egg and garnish with some chopped chives.

Calling all young people... Come and sing with a fun and friendly group Peterborough Young Singers (PYS) is a local choir for ages 7 to 21, a registered charity that promotes singing in lots of different genres including pop, traditional, musicals and lots more. The choir is run by a group of enthusiastic parents and we have Matt Smith (Head of Music at Hampton College) as our Musical Director. No auditions are necessary; just a willingness to join in with others, make new friends, and find your voice! We rehearse on Saturday mornings in the Community Room at CSK in Hampton and
our schedule each term includes numerous local performances as well as more formal concerts, many of which are held in collaboration with other Peterborough musical groups. When the opportunity arises we will also take part in national projects, performing in venues such as the Royal Albert Hall; where we went in November of last year. In addition, we welcome the whole family to take part in our various social events with a firm favourite being our summer barbecue at Ferry Meadows.

Tax tips - matters to consider before 5 April 2017
Owner Managed Limited Companies: The taxation of dividend income changed significantly in April 2016, so it might be tax efficient, if there is sufficient retained profits in your company, to vote a minimum dividend to shareholders of £5,000. The first £5,000 dividend paid per tax year is tax free and the remainder over this amount is taxed at 7.50% providing you are a basic rate tax payer. Also you may consider gifting shares to your spouse to take advantage of the first £5,000 of dividend income that is tax free. Use your ISA allowance: ISA’s provide a tax free environment for your savings. Have you paid the maximum into your ISA investment during the 2016/2017 tax year of £15,240 per person – if not consider topping this amount up. In addition, parents can now also fund a junior ISA. Any unused investment limit cannot be rolled forward into next year, so it will be lost. Use your personal allowance: Ensure that you are making the most of your tax-free personal allowance (PA), which is set at £11,000 for 2016/17. If your spouse or partner has little or no income, you may wish to consider transferring income (or incomeproducing assets) to them to make sure that they fully utilise their PA. However, you should take care to avoid falling foul of the settlements legislation governing ‘income shifting’, and consider the legal consequences of transfers. Certain married couples and civil partners may also be able to make use of the Marriage Allowance. This allows couples to transfer 10% of their PA to their spouse or civil partner, where neither pays tax at the higher or additional rate. The above is only a few matters you should consider, but there may be other opportunities depending upon your circumstances. More details are on our website, but professional advice on any matters should be taken as soon as possible, or talk to us.
