Spring is stirring at Sacrewell
What is the first sign of spring? Pancakes of course! Pancake themed fun and games on March 2nd from 9.30am – 5pm
At Sacrewell Farm near Wansford we will be putting on a host of great pancake themed fun and games on March 2nd from 9.30am – 5pm to celebrate Pancake Day. Come and have a go at our Pancake Trail or challenge your friends to a relay in our brilliant pancake race! Will you be able to tackle the obstacles put in place while wearing some wacky outfits? March is also set to be one filled with new arrivals. We are expecting some very exciting baby animals, including additions our rare breed sheep flocks, some fluffy chicks and a litter of British Lop piglets. If you visit the Farm after March 8th there may be a chance for you to feed one of our orphaned cade lambs which are rescued by staff at the Farm each year and hand raised. The lambs will be given names popular in 1964 this year to celebrate the William Scott Abbott Trust’s 50th anniversary. Marketing and Communications Officer Megan Horner said “We cannot wait for lambing to start in March. For us it symbolises the end of a very wet winter and we are hoping the sun will come out for us!”
Feed one of our orphaned cade lambs on March 8th
“Lambing is by far our most popular event of the year-especially with schools. We are really looking forward to welcoming everyone to Sacrewell to tell them all about the exciting plans we have in store this year.” Lambing will run at Sacrewell from March 8th – April 27th so there is plenty of time to visit the new arrivals. The piglets are due later in March and our Hatchery will be booming with chicks. On Mother’s Day (March 30th) Mums and Grandmothers can get into the Farm for free! So there’s no excuse not to visit some of our resident mothers with their new arrivals. Visitors to the Farm will also be able to see the plans for the new play barn which is due to open at Easter. It will be filled with brand new farm themed play equipment for children aged from babies to teenagers!
The Farm is open daily from 9.30am – 5pm. For more information about events please visit www.sacrewell.org.uk or call 01780 782254 4

Hampton News
In Tune Like most people, I enjoy music. Whether or not it’s good music is down to individual interpretation. But even more than that I find my appreciation of music varies dependent on my mood. One day a piece of music may send tingles down my spine because it’s so perfect, so right for me. But another day it may be just good. The passing of time can also influence my enjoyment of music. Some pieces I’ll perhaps tire of a little, whilst others evoke special memories. Those memories may be good or bad, but it’s the music that brings them to life, that stirs the emotions. It’s rare for anyone else to share those particular deep feelings, but when they do the intensity increases. That’s how powerful music is. And at the other end of the scale is the music that’s not so pleasurable, be it a neighbour’s choice on a sunny day or the hammeron-head type thumping from a passing car. These can generate entirely different emotions: negative emotions. Even if the intrusions are music that you normally enjoy, they can be discordant at the wrong time.
William Congreve wrote, “Music soothes the savage beast”. Usually he’s right, but not always! I’m fortunate in that I enjoy a wide range of music, so in reality there’s little that really disturbs me. Even when it’s not my particular taste, I can still usually appreciate the skills of the musicians. I prefer to celebrate the differences in the music that’s so readily available to us now. There’s so much out there that I wouldn’t have been able to enjoy if I’d been one of those with limited acceptance of alternatives. There’s some truly fantastic music out there, from all over the world. And the same goes for people. Sometimes they’ll annoy us, but mostly they’re OK.
The more we can accept and enjoy the differences the happier we’ll all be. We don’t especially have to like everyone, just as we don’t all have to like Prokofiev, P!nk or The Prodigy (even if an ex-member is a wellloved Hampton resident!). Music can be defined as vocal or instrumental sounds (or both) combined in such a way as to produce beauty of form, harmony, and expression of emotion. The vast majority of us enjoy music – music of all different types. I’m listening to Santana whilst writing this and I feel good. I wish people could live equally well in harmony, in tune with each other, enjoying the variety that everyone has to offer.

Local band As a Hampton resident, I am flattered to be asked to introduce my musical exploits to my fellow Hampton neighbours. It was about 8 years ago that I found Motown. Yes I should have known what it was, but coming from darkest Wales, I was a product of male voice and mixed choirs. Moving on to today, I sing in my 8 piece function band, “The Shamlas”, and also in my 5 piece Indie Band “ Back 2 the bone” . I switched from Stevie wonder to The Dandy Warhols, and Kaiser Chiefs to The Temptations. This allows me to accommodate most bookings from weddings and birthdays to larger outdoor events. How not to start married life… Max Kay a disgruntled groom was jailed for 6 years almost 2 years ago for setting fire to Peckforton Castle in Cheshire, the venue for his wedding reception. The wedding had reportedly cost £25,000.00 and he could not afford to pay the outstanding balance that was still due. After getting drunk and arguing with hotel staff he set light to a curtain at the hotel. The ensuing fire caused £5.4 million damage to the hotel but fortunately all the occupants escaped unharmed. The Court heard that Mr Kay, who admitted arson, wasn’t in a position to afford the luxury wedding but went ahead anyway. Many couples want the perfect day for their wedding and are prepared to pay, sometimes tens of thousands of pounds to secure it and they start married life with a large debt to pay for the wedding. The wedding industry remains buoyant even during times of recession with many luxurious venues on offer. Every couple will choose what budget they are prepared to commit to for their wedding and what will make the day perfect for them. Hopefully, few people will go to the lengths of Mr Kay. One can only imagine how Mrs Kay felt about her wedding day and the prospect of facing the first few years of married life with her husband in Prison. Your spouse committing arson on your wedding night would certainly be grounds for divorce, albeit somewhat unusual ones!

New dawn for Broadway club Attica VIP is changing direction for 2014 and seeking to attract many new faces through its doors. It’s an exciting new venture for the local nightclub. Committed to celebrating all genres of music, the club now hosts two live music nights: Kookie Tuesdays and Attica Live, a showcase for local bands to perform on stage. There is also an early doors cocktail bar, and a re-launch of many great offers. Manager John Scriven said: “We have learned from past mistakes and turned the corner. It’s a beautiful venue, offering a friendly, relaxing evening for everyone to enjoy.” With many events planned for the summer, it could be time to put Attica on your list of places to go in Peterborough for a great night out.

Hampton Wildlife
The first glimpses of spring elder buds
After the coldness of winter the earth begins to warm to bring forth new life. In this country, with defined seasons, there is always something new to look for as Hampton’s wildlife begins to awaken. The month of March sees the return of migratory birds, and by now our resident birds will be singing their hearts out, proclaiming their territories to all around them. The house martins in Hampton will return from Africa and the skylarks will be singing high above the remaining, as yet unused, building land. Please don’t miss them. They are the only British birds who sing non-stop whilst on the wing. You should be able to hear some on the land at the back of Tescos, behind the new Vivacity Leisure Centre.
blackthorn
Look too for the first wildflowers to blossom. Towards the end of the month the blackthorn flowers. This can often be confused with the hawthorn. The latter, though, doesn’t flower until the end of May, hence it’s often known as the May Tree. The blackthorn is recognisable from its dark, thorny branches which are covered in white blossom. Willow catkins may be seen towards the end of March on planted trees around the lakes. These male catkins appear before the leaves, so that the pollen within them can be blown by the wind to fertilise the green female flowers on nearby trees.
horse chestnut bud
Even the grass will begin to show some new growth after the wet, muddy winter and the buds of horse chestnut and elder may begin to break: signs that Spring is on its way, and very welcome it will be as colour replaces the muted tones of winter. Lakota (Lover of nature)

Schools Spring news from
Hampton Hargate primary school Saxon Day As part of our history topic work this term Years 3 and 4 took part in an Anglo Saxon Day. The event was run by a company called Portals from the Past and was designed to complement the work that have been doing in school and enhance the children’s knowledge of the Saxons. During the day the children got to experience the real flavour of Saxon England. From the hierarchy and etiquette of the Lord’s Hall to the burial of a Saxon king. They also learned about the story of Beowulf and how archaeologists piece together the information they find on digs. The interactive activity based Saxon workshop really brought the period to life as it explored the story of England from the coming of the Saxons, through to the Battle of Hastings. To make the day as authentic as possible, the children were encouraged to come to school dressed as Saxons and they were all given a Saxon name for the day. Names such as Grimbold, Harold, Enid, Osfrid and Wiglaf proved to be very popular! The children and staff all looked fantastic in their Saxon outfits and it was clear from the buzz around school that they all enjoyed the experience.
Saxon Day
Lego Club A group of our Year 5 & 6 children took part in the First Lego League Finals at the beginning of February. The team called “The Hargate Waves”, represented Peterborough and competed against 32 other teams most of whom were secondary schools! (and some who came from as far as Ireland!). The Hargate Waves worked really well together and all their hard work paid off as they came away with one of the final award trophies!! The team were fantastic ambassadors for our school, Peterborough and Caterpillar, who funded the project. The trophy will join our many other First Lego League trophies in the cabinet in the foyer. Well done to everyone involved and a big “Thank You” to Mrs Christophi for all her hard work.

Schools Little Acorns Day Nursery and Montessori School
Hampton College (Primary Phase)
This month Little Acorns have been continuing to take advantage of the bad weather by making mud pies and jumping in the puddles.
It’s hard to believe that half of the school year is already behind us and I am sure we are all looking forward to ‘springing ahead’ into spring. February was another exciting month at Hampton College (Primary Phase) and our children have been as busy and as active as ever.
All the children have been celebrating Chinese New Year. We have been dressing up in costumes from China, and have been sampling a variety of food. Pre – school made a Chinese dragon to parade around the nursery. As spring approaches we have been planting seeds, and looking at how things grow and change. Our Pre- school children have been continuing to look at different stories and the characters within the books. To enhance this we are going to have a parent helper come in to visit and read a book in a different language. The children have also been learning basic French, and we were lucky enough to have a French student to help us. The nursery has also been looking at Valentine’s Day, and doing associated craft activities.
In reception the children have been exploring the story of ‘The Runaway Train’ and they have embraced this story in all aspects of their learning. For their physical development time they went into the hall and re-enacted the train’s journey across various landscapes using our gym apparatus. They climbed to the top of the high box as the train climbed the mountain; chugged their way slowly and carefully along the narrow ridge; negotiated the tricky waterfall as they moved down the gym ladder and even went up and over lots of hills, made from various different height boxes and benches. In the outdoor area the train squelched its way through the muddy swamp and travelled safely home. Back in the classroom, the children made tickets for the train, wrote postcards from their destination and even wrote about the journey itself. A fun, and exhausting, time was had by all! Year One have been equally busy learning about their local area of Hampton. They have been on a walkabout in Hampton to look at different types of houses and other buildings and then came back to school to explore houses and homes that other children live in. One of our secondary phase science teachers also came to visit this term, helping the children to look at local plants and bugs to find out what else is living on our doorstep.
If you would like to book/enquire about our Nursery please contact: 01733 244000 or visit www.littleacorns-daynursery.co.uk
18
We also had a very special visit from Sylvia, our Hampton vicar, who really injected some excitement into our themed week of ‘Kind words and actions’ with her assembly about the children’s goodness batteries. The children were really pleased to see Sylvia and responded extremely enthusiastically to this very important message of looking after others with the words and actions we use. A very important message for us all!

Schools Hampton Vale Primary School Hundreds of Hampton Vale children have been experiencing history first-hand when taking part in exciting learning events that have spanned more than 2,000 years of history. As part of their work about World War Two, the Year Six children spent a day experiencing life as wartime evacuees, complete with copies of gas mask boxes; the previous day, they spent a day at the Imperial War Museum, Duxford, to discover more about life in wartime Britain.
Each of the school’s year groups prepares and presents a production, often linked to the year group’s theme learning, each year for parents and friends; previous production themes have included a harvest celebration, “Hansel and Gretel” and the Nativity story. “Learning today means understanding the past and preparing our children for the future. Making learning enjoyable and memorable through first-hand and real-life experiences allows our children to make connections and practically apply the skills they have learned in class.”
My name is Ted Coles and I am in 6MCS at Hampton Vale Primary School. We are currently learning about World War 2 and about how Winston Churchill used persuasive language in his speeches to spur on the people fighting and also those at home in the UK. I really hope that you enjoy my writing, that I completed independently...my teachers and peers certainly did!’
The school’s Year Four children stepped back further in time to live a day as Victorians when they visited Peterborough Museum and found out more about life for the servants, medical staff and patients of the day. Their visit followed their successful musical production of “Oliver”, in which they retold Charles Dickens’ Victorian tale of Oliver Twist. In Year Three, the children’s focus has been on the Romans and their impact on life in Britain, and they have taken part in a series of events to develop their knowledge about the era. Parents were invited to visit the “Roman museum in the classrooms”, at which the children exhibited some of their work about the Romans. A visit to the city’s Flag Fen also immersed them in learning about the Romans, as did a playground re-enactment of a march, during which the children moved in formation with shields they had made. The history events and visits form part of the children’s theme learning. Sam Skillcorn, the school’s subject leader for humanities (including history), said: “ We have enhanced our history curriculum this term to inspire our children even further by including as many first-hand and real-life experiences as possible. All of our children were engaged, challenged and motivated as learning was brought to life.
Violence, catastrophe, death- can we risk so many lives? A war has been started; we will not join that war, as it would put us on the edge of everything being lost. Children would grieve in their beds when their relatives are killed. They will cry- all day and night- until the war is over, their parents slipping away because of the noxious Nazi. How would we cope with food rationing too. Thousands starving, panicking for just half a grape. It would drive people crazy. In spite of this, we cannot just stand and watch other countries fall into the hands of Hitler- the man who thinks he is the saviour of Germany. We cannot be cowards. We cannot le innocent people be murdered; our country will never back down! Winning will bring peace to the world. It will bring peace to us. Nevertheless, their army is too omnipotent. Can you imagine the carnage, while bullets are shot, buildings smashed and lives ruined? We won’t have anything left if we lose. Torture, blood, homeless- how can we avoid it? We don’t even have the resources! They have more tanks, more planes and more soldiers. What chance do we have? We are- by hundreds of thousands- outnumbered. Yet, people can’t do this. They can’t just let Hitler take the world. He will kill Jewish people because of race, and everyone else because of power! We need to stop him, together. There may be dark days ahead, but we can stop this; we can save the world! Only if we have faith. We will go to war. We will fight. And we will prevail. I would even kill myself if it meant stopping this tyranny. We blasted our way through WW1. We will do the same. Will lives be lost? We will need hope, power, trust.

It’s that time of year again… All of Peterborough’s residents will soon be receiving details of the Council Tax for the forthcoming (2014/2015) financial year and no doubt groaning that the tax has increased whilst local services are being cut, including the closure of the Hampton Children’s Centre. In recognition of the financial constraints facing many families at this time the Parish Council, at their meeting in December 2013, agreed to hold Parish Council expenditure at the same level for the forthcoming financial year using reserves to maintain support for existing projects such as the Lengthsman Service and the Hampton Community Fund. Unfortunately, Peterborough City Council has cut their contribution to parishes again this year, resulting in a shortfall of over £2000 in the Parish budget which
will, despite councillors’ efforts; result in a small increase in the precept for Hampton Parish Council. What is particularly worrying for the Parish Council is the Peterborough City Council’s proposals to withdraw this completely in the 2015/2016 financial year when, according to their draft budget proposals shown below, the City Council will ‘choose’ not to pass on the Council Tax Support Grant to the parishes, a further ‘loss’ to Hampton Parish Council of over nearly ten thousand pounds. This table is an extract from the Peterborough City Council’s proposals for ‘balancing their books’ for 2014/15 and future yearspublished on Friday 25 January 2013.
Parish Councils In recent years we have made some reductions to the discretionary funding we provide to parish councils. We are proposing to remove the remaining discrectionary funding, and also to remove the council tax support grant in full. The funding provided to those parish councils that provide burial grounds will continue as before. In line with the practice established in previous years, it is proposed that a full year’s notice will be provided for this, and the measure will not be implemented until 2015/16. Issue

You can download the full budget proposals from the City Council website: www.peterborough.gov.uk/pdf/CouncilAndDemocracy-Budget-Proposals20142015.pdf Or pick up a printed copy of the booklet from the Town Hall reception / Customer Service Centre in Bayard Place (copies can also be viewed at any library in the city). Once you have read the proposals, you can get involved by sending your responses to the following questions: 1. Do you have any comments to make about any of the proposals? 2. If you do not agree with any of the proposals tell us what you think we could do instead to balance our books? 3. Do you agree that council tax should be frozen? If not, where would you suggest we invest the extra £500,000 generated by increasing council tax by the government’s current two per cent threshold? 4. Are there any other suggestions you would like to make? You can respond by email budget@peterborough.gov.uk or in writing to: • Financial Services Manager, Peterborough City Council, Town Hall, Bridge Street, Peterborough, PE1 1HG All responses must be received by 5pm on Tuesday 4 March 2014. These proposals will lead to more cuts in local services or a rise in precept to maintain local service provision so please support the Parish Council by objecting to these proposals.

Your guide to
Welcome to this new section in your Gazette, where each month we’ll be partnering with O&H Hampton to focus on one or two aspects of Hampton life.
Living in Hampton
This month O&H Hampton General Manager Roger Tallowin takes a look at doing business here, wades into the fishing debate, and explains why we should all be part of the Hampton map. Popping up with opportunities for small business
An angle on fishing Hampton’s lakes In response to a number of questions and comments on the Gazette’s always-lively Facebook page, O&H Hampton thought it would be helpful to remind people of the rules around fishing in Hampton’s lakes.
Pizza in the park? Lattes at the lakeside? As the prospect of better weather beckons, O&H Hampton would welcome people with a great business idea and lots of energy to provide pop-up refreshment stands for Hampton this summer.
Fishing is allowed in the main lakes within the housing areas but all fish must be returned to the water and may not be taken away. Anyone aged 12+ fishing must, of course, hold a rod licence, issued by the Environment Agency.
Explained Roger “We have so many wonderful outdoor places on Hampton it would be great to see a pop-up for six months or so, giving us all an extra incentive to visit and enjoy the scenery. It could be crepes with the kiddies overlooking Serpentine Lake, afternoon tea in Haddon Wood, pizzas, a coffee shop – whatever ideas people have.
Fishing is prohibited in the two ornamental ponds on Hargate and anyone seen removing fish from, or from the main lakes, should be reported to the police on 101 and the Hampton office on 01733 293220. All this, plus a link to information on getting a fishing licence, can be found on the Hampton map at www.ohhampton.co.uk
We’re not suggesting a van but something more substantial such as a timber chalet with a few benches.” O&H Hampton are offering their support through any permissions or planning that are needed to see a stand or two in time for the summer season. “Now is the time to get in touch if you have an idea,” said Roger.
Said Roger Tallowin “We do get calls about people fishing the ponds illegally and have now put up signs and pictures to make it clear this is not allowed. On the main lakes we welcome sensible fishing according to the rules but would just like to stress that there are pike in the lakes and special tackle is needed for these. Pike can bite through the lines available in some local shops, allowing them to swallow the hook which leaves them badly injured.”
Small business units for rent In the meantime, there’s news for anyone looking for more permanent premises in Hampton.
Map your favourite places and pursuits
A number of small business units are available in the district centre at Hampton Vale, part of Bovis’ new homes development.
Are you on the map yet? The Hampton interactive map was created to give local people a simple way of finding out what’s happening in Hampton - and to show anyone thinking of moving their home or business to the area what there is to enjoy.
More information and viewings are available by contacting Alison Tindle on 01645 437000 or by email alison.tindle@bovishomes.co.uk And for enterprises new and old, a reminder that you can tell everyone what you do and where you do it by adding your business to the Hampton interactive map. It’s completely free of charge and will enable local people to find and support you.
Adding your club, group, business venture or favourite spot is easy. Just pop over to www.ohhampton.co.uk and follow the steps on the map page.

British Institute & Association Electrolysists (BIAE) Workshop Friday 4th and Saturday 5th April on Hampton from 10am till 6pm
Models required for skin lesion removal such as Telangiectasia (thread veins), Skin Tags, Moles, Warts, blood spots (Campbell de Morgan spots).
The BIAE are having a workshop on the 4th and 5th of April on Hampton to improve our standards and to highlight our work as electrolysists not only for permanent hair removal, but for advanced procedures as mentioned above. Visiting and treating will be two of our top tutors in the BIAE, Helen Graham and Mandy Painting, accompanied with a number of other ‘advanced’ qualified electrolysis. This is the first workshop we have organised outside of a college and we are very keen to invite models to demonstrate and improve our technique and to maintain the highest standard of treatment by the BIAE. We will also be filming some of the treaments to post onto the BIAE website, but with client consent only Electrolysis will also be available. Almost every area of the body can be treated with electrolysis. Lip, Ears(for men), chin, eyebrows, especially mono brow for young men. Underarm, Bikini Line, Legs, Abdomen, Nipple area, Fingers and Toes. Advanced techniques have traditionally been available from experienced
BIAE members to remove a variety of cosmetic skin blemishes quickly and expertly. Unlike hair removal, these treatments generally require only one appointment and take advantage of the very precise needle control required by electrolysis, (some cases may require more than one treatment.) Only those who have undertaken specialist advanced training are able to perform these treatments. All those trained in advanced electrolysis will be able to remove skin tags, milia, thread veins (telangiectasia) and blood spots (Campbell de Morgan spots.) All treatment will be by appointment only. All treatment will be free of charge. We welcome both male and female clients. For further information please contact June on 07779 475990

In the garden Sean Elliott from Scenic Gardens gives you his handy gardening tips and advice.
Happy Gardening!
Get ready for spring! It’ll be here before you know it so take advantage and have a good spring clean.
March
Clear all leaf matter from the beds if this has not already been done. Dig over the beds incorporating organic matter to give the plants the best start. Remove any weeds that are starting to show. Spread a layer of mulch over bare soil to retain moisture and reduce weed regeneration. Weed driveways and paths while you have the time to get on top of the garden.

Once weather conditions are suitable the peas can be slid from the gutter into a small trench in the garden and make sure that you protect from birds. For those people with smaller gardens and wanting to grow peas, it is a good idea to grow climbing peas in a large container, caned and wired for them to climb. This method, saves space and looks quite decorative and the peas are really easy to pick and it is surprising as to how big a crop you can obtain. However, you must look for the best pea varieties and these come from Heritage seeds (older varieties) and are available from many suppliers on the internet. Finally, do not forget to fertilise your roses and it is a good idea to place charcoal in the bottom of your water butts to help keep the water sweet. Remember...

Hampton Calendar MONDAY
March marks the official start of British summer time - there’s a warming thought. Unlikely that we will be seeing any sunshine or shedding any winter wardrobe layers for a little while, but it’s nice to think it won’t be too long before the days are drawing out. Waking up to sunny mornings & no longer feeling the urge to hibernate! March is also the month for one of the (in my view) most important days of the year - Mother’s Day. I don’t believe you have to do anything fancy or lavish to celebrate that wonderful woman in your life (sorry mum ha ha!) but just take a moment to really think about her & if you’re lucky enough to still have her here, let her know how much you appreciate her. Trust me, she’s female - she needs to hear it sometimes ;) So I want to use my little space as a public tribute to my mum; for always being there for me, whether it’s bringing me Lucozade when I’m poorly, for listening to me rant, whine, cry - listening, comforting & then always setting me straight & pushing me onwards & upwards, even if I get stroppy at the time ;) Thank you for guiding me as a child, giving me a sense of right & wrong but the space to make my own decisions. For giving me your stupid sense of humour - so we both laugh at our own ridiculous conversations (definitely should have our own sit com) and thank you more than anything, for showing me love and care & therefore a determination that I too will be the best mum I can to my own children. Love you x
