THE STORY OF A VERY HUNGRY CAT

FERRY MEADOWS

Welcome...

In this issue

With infection rates falling and the vaccination programme continuing apace, we are starting to see the first signs of life returning and it is certainly an exciting time. How many of us have welcomed that, yet held back a little anticipation, because uncertainty has become the only certainty. From April 12, as we moved a step closer to freedom, non-essential shops, hairdressers and salons flung open their doors, and pubs and restaurants were permitted to serve customers outside. But while these are all steps in the right direction, with Covid-19 restrictions being eased over four steps spread across at least four months – there are still many decisions which still need to be made, and some unknowns remain.

Just as it took us time to find ways of coping during lockdown, we should also expect that it will take time to find our way back, and to reconnect with life. Things may not be the same as they were before.

Passionate about Prayer In May 2020 a major national newspaper reported that the coronavirus pandemic had resulted in a 50% surge in online searches for prayer, as people struggled to cope with feelings of anxiety and hopelessness. The Church of England reported a surge of many thousands in downloads of its ‘Time to Pray’ app. From a Christian perspective, our faith is built on the vulnerability of humanity. It’s built on the truth that when God took human form, it included illness, death, isolation and abandonment. There is nothing that we can experience in the here and now that God in the person of Christ hasn’t experienced ahead of us. When we pray, we connect with a living God who completely understands us. God wants us to talk to him, and he wants to speak to us, just as we would in any friendship. That’s where good relationships start - and more importantly - continue. This is just one of the many reasons we’re passionate about prayer at CSK church. We always have a prayer space available in church any time that Chimes, our coffee shop, is open. However, do check out our Facebook page for the extra prayer activities we will be providing this month as we join in with the Archbishop of Canterbury’s global prayer movement, ‘Thy Kingdom Come’, between the 13 and 23 May, visit www.thykingdomcome.global Needless to say, we’d also be delighted to pray for you at any time of the year. If there’s something on your mind, do email us at office@cskhampton.church or put a written request through our letter box at church.

Tackling Dog Fouling in our Community

Packaging materials, padlocks an d insurance available

Many residents have been frustrated by a very small minority of irresponsible dog owners allowing the fouling of pavements and green areas around our community, and failing to clean it up. Especially right outside their front doors! Following some dialogue on local groups back in January local resident Lindsay Sharp made some suggestions including:  The introduction of poop bag dispensers at strategic areas  Increased waste bins in areas that re lacking them  The possibility of dissolvable stencilling on pavements  Increased zero-tolerance and fining, perhaps through the use of CCTV

Self storage solutions in Peterborough from £16.80/pw Short and long term storage Competitive prices 24 hours controlled access CCTV Security fencing and lighting

As an attempt to firstly remove the excuse for this anti-social behaviour a number of dispensers have been sourced by Lindsay, from a small fabrication company contact using their apprenticeship scheme. These have started to be mounted in areas of concern so feedback is welcomed, both on the impact of this initiative and also the next steps. Whilst not the complete solution, hopefully it will raise awareness and reduce the need for a harsher approach to the issue, which will come if needed.

All storage containers are constructed to a high specification with additional ventilation and high security lock box.

CITY FIBRE PROMOTION

Are you in need of a digital detox or digital empowerment? If you haven’t thought about it yourself, you’ve likely heard friends, family or work colleagues say they’re in need of a “digital detox” - in other words, temporarily forgoing digital devices to help reduce stress.

lockdown downloads of “mindfulness” apps increased by 25% - with 750k downloads made in one week alone.

Whether it’s disturbed sleep patterns caused by blue light emitting devices, over-exposure to airbrushed images on social media or simply feeling you can’t switch off, we’re all familiar with the effects of too much screen time.

Intelligent appliances can help minimise waste, control heating and lighting, improve energy efficiency and save time and money so we can focus on what really matters to us.

The past year, however, has highlighted major benefits of digital technology including empowering more flexible living.

Home-working At the start of 2020, just 6% of UK workers were home-based. Now, it’s the norm for many with the majority (88%) keen to continue home-working in some capacity post-pandemic. Homeworking can reduce work-related stress and boost efficiency - 70% of home-workers reported being just as, if not more, productive as when officebased. From cutting commuting time to tackling household chores during breaks – it brings flexibility to our hectic lives.

Supercharging health & wellbeing When gyms were forced to close, digital tools kept us on track with our goals. Downloads of health and fitness apps grew worldwide by 46%, and 60% have enjoyed using them so much they plan on cancelling their gym memberships. The same can be said for apps developed to help users sleep better, meditate and relax. During the first

The rise of ‘The Internet of Things’ and Smart Cities

Investment in community digital infrastructure can also make towns and cities safer, greener and more efficient for the benefit of all citizens. Plenty of examples exist globally, from tackling parking problems in South Korea, to New York’s smart waste management trucks and improved transport efficiency in Iceland.

Nevertheless, digital challenges remain. Nearly 200,000 UK households currently get download speeds lower than 10Mbps, making basic services like email frustrating. And, where poor connectivity is widespread, smart city initiatives remain a pipe dream. Just like we need more pipes and wires to carry water and electricity when more homes are built, increasing web traffic means we need more bandwidth. That’s why CityFibre’s investing in city-wide full fibre networks to future-proof UK communities. The majority of UK premises connect to the internet via networks built for telephones – copper networks designed to carry sound, not data. While full fibre networks use 100% fibre optic technology to carry data at lightning speed from the home to the point of connection.

Mental Health Awareness Week 10 – 16 May During Mental Health Awareness Week 2021, we will pull together the evidence that demonstrates the powerful benefits of nature for our mental health. We will look at nature’s unique ability to not only bring consolation in times of stress, but also increase our creativity, empathy and a sense of wonder. It turns out that it is not just being in nature but how we open ourselves up and interact with nature that counts. We will show that even small contacts with nature can reduce feelings of social isolation and be effective in protecting our mental health, and preventing distress. Visit www.mentalhealth.org.uk/campaigns/mental-health-awarenessweek/why-nature to find out more.

Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS) is a rare neurological disorder in which the body’s immune system mistakenly attacks part of its peripheral nervous system—the network of nerves located outside of the brain and spinal cord. Guillain-Barré syndrome is thought to be caused by a problem with the immune system, the body’s natural defence against illness and infection. Normally the immune system attacks any germs that get into the body. But in people with Guillain-Barré syndrome, something goes wrong and it mistakenly attacks the nerves. This damages the nerves and stops signals from the brain travelling along them properly, which can cause problems such as numbness, weakness and pain in the limbs.

Hayley Trotman is walking again after being suddenly paralysed by a rare nerve disorder. Back in August last year, the primary school teaching assistant couldn’t even move her eyelids and her chances of getting back on her feet were almost zero. But thanks to the incredible dedication, expertise and facilities of an elite group of physiotherapists, she has made a miraculous recovery. “The chaplain would come and pray for me by my bedside every single day” Hayley recalls, “I’ve gone from the brink of death, trapped inside a lifeless body, to walking through our front door unaided. It’s nothing short of a miracle!”

It’s not clear exactly why this happens. The condition is not passed from person to person and is not inherited. It is thought to be triggered by an infection and in Hayley’s case it may have stemmed from a cold she caught a few weeks earlier.

one step at a time Hayley’s symptoms began just months after her husband Carl had received a life-saving kidney transplant. Her ordeal began with terrible back pain. Days later she was completely immobile and Carl had to carry her into Peterborough General Hospital. She was in so much pain that medics put her into an induced coma.

note her progress. Each day, she wrote down advice from her team to use as motivation. “Their words helped me move forward and have stayed with me to this day,” she said. Two friends, Fiona Stewart and Sarah Mcnair, set up a group with some local Hampton friends and at Christmas they all got together and chipped in with funds that helped us have a wonderful Christmas.

Doctors diagnosed a severe case of GuillainBarré syndrome (GBS). Hayley described how her body shut down and she had to have her dress cut off as she had stopped breathing, and after being in a coma for eight days, she had to be resuscitated twice, and mechanically ventilated with a tracheostomy.

pain for months, the sense of relief I felt was indescribable.

“When I came around, I felt like I was a prisoner in my own body,” she explained, “completely conscious but in excruciating pain and unable to move any part of my body. Apart from pain medication, the doctors said that with GBS there was almost nothing they could do.”

“I’ve got so many things on my bucket list. One of the first things I want to do is jump out of a plane to raise funds for GBS, so others who get this horrific illness have a better prognosis.”

Hayley spent three months in intensive care and was told that whilst she might recover in time, she had to prepare herself for the very real possibility that she would never walk again. The traumatic experience was compounded by the fact that due to Covid restrictions she could only see her husband and children through a window. “Carl had a transplant in March and we thought we might lose him then. Then, just months later, our poor children were facing up to the same possibility with their mum. “It was simply horrific. I felt so incredibly scared and alone and at points just wanted to end it all.” But very slowly Hayley regained movement in her face and hands, which enabled her to communicate by writing simple words on a whiteboard. After weeks of being in a vegetative state she could finally ask Carl, 52, and their 13-year-old twin girls Evie, and Ella, and son Christian, 14, to keep praying for her. In November last year, when making little

“I’d basically spent months making zero improvement and thought my life was over. Suddenly I felt that there was a way out of this horrific death sentence.”

“Its times like these you realise how special your friends are,” Hayley says, “I have been overwhelmed with the support and kindness I have received.”

With a team of physiotherapists using state-of-the art robotics and sensor-assisted technology, Hayley slowly started to regain movement in the rest of her body.

Recovery is slow but these days Hayley is managing to do little bits around the house, and as a self-confessed ‘plantaholic’ is looking forward to being able to enjoy gardening again.

“The dedication of the physios combined with the amazing machines they had there started to teach my body to move again,” said Hayley. “By the new year, with my confidence building, I could see some light at the end of the tunnel and I was beginning to think that I might actually leave hospital and even walk.”

“I’ve been supported in every step of my journey and will be forever grateful. I’ve got so many things on my bucket list now. “One of the first things I want to do is jump out of a plane to raise funds for GBS, so others who get this horrific illness have a better prognosis.”

Along with more sessions in the hydrotherapy pool and time in the clinic’s sensory rooms and gardens, Hayley went from strength to strength until finally taking her first unaided steps. Her family still couldn’t come to visit, so she FaceTimed them with the amazing news, and a video of her walking without a frame or sticks. “Our kids cried when they saw it” Hayley remembers, “and, needless to say, that made me start blubbing too!” During her stay at Askham, Hayley started a journal so she could reflect on her journey and

fitforlife Tracey Hammond always considered herself a non-runner. She would avoid it at all costs. With sheer determination and a little help from her friends she is now surpassing her own expectations

Hampton Harriers’ Running Success Two years ago, I was inspired by a friend to give ‘Couch to 5k’ a go, which I didn’t find easy and had given up before completing it. I then tried again and just found it a struggle to complete the runs. A few months later. I bumped into one of my netball friends, Stacey, who from now on is called ‘My Amazing Running Buddy’ (MARB) , who asked if I’d fancy running a few mornings a week. I agreed but warned her that I was not very good! From that early conversation we now run three mornings a week in all sorts of weather. MARB was great, starting me running slowly or walking until I was able to run for 30 minutes. My next goal was to achieve a 5k and we just kept plugging away. MARB then invited me to join The Hampton Harriers’ running group on Facebook – I won’t lie, seeing all their posts and seeing how quickly and how far they ran made me feel a bit embarrassed. But ... how wrong I was! They are an incredibly supportive and encouraging group of runners who have continued to spur me on.

By June last year. MARB and I were running 5-7k every time and then. I’m not sure if was brave or stupid. but I suggested we try for a 10k. Stacey was thrilled and the next Friday (now known as ‘long run Friday’) I achieved my first 10k. I was amazed even if my legs did not want to work for the rest of the day. We then settled into our weekly routine and then, as we went into the latest lockdown, my goal was to improve my 5k time from 36 mins to 34 mins. The weather has not been helpful and some mornings were more like dancing on ice than running, so I thought my goal was passing me by, until 4 weeks ago when MARB said, right, tomorrow we are going for that 5k PB. I always say ‘yes’ to Stacey.

By Tracey Hammond

she pushed me again and achieved 31 mins 52. I couldn’t talk afterwards but the smile on my face said it all. My challenge last week was to see how quickly I could run one mile; 9 minute 48. I couldn’t breathe for about 5 minutes afterwards but I had broken the 10 minutes mark. I was chuffed. Then. just this morning. I was after another one mile PB and I did it 9 minutes 30! It has been an amazing journey and the challenges don’t stop. I am now looking to improve my 10k time and also to keep working on my 5k. You never know, I may even brave a park run once we are out of lockdown.

Setting out at 6am, I was unable to talk for concentrating on just breathing. MARB kept an eye on the watch and encouraged me all the way. That first mile was 10mins 35…I kept going ...I’m not actually sure how, but I surpassed my 34 minute goal and achieved a 32 min 26 run!

Hampton Harriers Running Group is a great local community who have inspired and encouraged me all the way and who also give a friendly wave and ‘hello’ when we see each other during morning running, come rain or shine. I have no words to express how thankful I am for my MARB, Stacey, she has been so patient and incredible.

I can’t put into words how that made me feel but Stacey wanted more, so the following week

Thank you everyone, I never thought I would say this, but I might just be a runner now.

After the successful reopening of the Lido last week, with an average of 350 swim sessions booked each day, the team at Vivacity are looking forward to being able to open the doors to their gyms and leisure venues on Monday 12 April as gyms, indoor swimming pools and leisure venues are permitted to reopen for the first time this year. After the last lockdown, the team introduced a successful online booking system to ensure members and customers could safely carry on enjoying their gym workouts, classes and swim sessions. Thorough risk assessments led to increased cleaning (including anti-viral fogging) spacing of equipment ensured social distancing and monitoring capacity allowed much valued regular indoor exercise to resume safely.

Vivacity gears up to Keep Peterborough

Active

Following customer feedback there have been a few extra changes to meet customer needs this time around. For example, longer swim sessions have been introduced, lockers, showers and changing facilities are now open and whilst indoor fitness classes are still not permitted under the government rules, an exciting programme of outdoor fitness classes has been introduced to provide

opportunities for guided group exercise. The classes range from Bootcamp style workouts, classes targeting specific muscle groups, high intensity cardio efforts and even aqua fitness at the Lido. Operations Director, Jon Marsden told us; “we are really looking forward to reopening, the whole staff team are passionate about what we do and miss our members and customers as much as they miss the gym. We all know of the physical and mental benefits of regular exercise and how important the routine of being able to go to the pool or gym is. It isn’t just about the exercise but seeing familiar faces, having fun and challenging yourself with others, accessing specialist equipment, advice or personal training or just being in a different environment to work out – all of these things are so important”.

Vivacity members have access to a host of different leisure facilities and services across the city including gyms, swimming pools, specialist health and wellbeing advice, courts, Nordic walking, outdoor fitness classes and even free or discounted swimming at the Lido, to find out more visit

The level of protection is determined by the type of fire safe and its fire rating. Not all fire safe boxes are alike. Standard fireproof safes protect valuables against intense heat and smoke damage for periods of up to 120 minutes. But it depends on what you want to store. The fire test standards require that the critical maximum temperature of the following media cannot be exceeded: Digital media: 120˚C; Computer data: 52˚C because electronic media melts at a lower temperature than paper combusts. Scaling the Wall - Clematis What do you think of if I say ‘clematis’? I think most of us would think of the large, purple-flowered, “Jackmanii” or the rampant, bronze-leafed, pink-flowered montana rubens. Rachael Leverton They are both terrific plants, but I think they are a little over-used. My husband teases me that I tend to give my ‘clematis lecture’ when visiting friends’ houses and see one scrambling over a trellis. For your benefit I’ve written it down here. Clematis is known as the ‘Queen of Climbers’. It can be utterly spectacular and should definitely not be relegated to trellis. It can used for covering fences and arbours, old tree stumps, sheds and even in beds and borders. Choose wisely and you can have flowers from early spring until late autumn. For beds and borders you don’t want anything as vigorous as montana, which will smother everything it touches. Instead choose a daintier one such as a variety of texensis or viticella. The flowers of the texensis hybrids look like finely cut bells. “Etoile Rose” is a beautiful dark pink edged with paler pink and “Princess of Wales” is a beautiful rosy red. Both of these will scramble through shrubs and flower all summer. They die back in winter so can be tidied up then. Viticella hybrids produce flowers which look like little pixie hats as they open. “Minuet” has purple and white flowers suspended on fine stems while “Purpurea Plena Elegans” produces double blooms which open into little purple rosettes.

One of the most difficult sites to find climbers for is an east or north facing site. My absolute favourite clematis thrives in this situation and flowers in early spring. Clematis alpina “Pink Flamingo” produces nodding, semi-double, creamy flowers veined with deep pink. It has the added bonus of producing beautiful fluffy seed heads after the flowers fade. Clematis prefers its feet in the shade and its head in the sun. Make sure the plant’s roots are shaded: pieces of broken flagstone are ideal, or an old cracked upside-down terracotta pot with the bottom knocked out. When clematis is happy it will flower prolifically. Large-flowered clematis tend to produce a second flush in the autumn, but others like tangutica and orientalis wait to flower until then. Both of these are very vigorous and are great for covering unsightly sheds or old trees. Finally, if you have a sheltered spot against a wall try cirrhosa balearica. This is a beautiful, winter-flowering variety with ferny foliage and pale-green flowers spotted with crimson. So, there it is…my clematis lecture. Hopefully you took notes and are ready to branch out into a whole new world of climbers.

Happy Gardening!

careeropportunities BLUEBIRD CARE PETERBOROUGH AND OUNDLE RECRUITMENT PROMOTION

Join us and MAKE A REAL DIFFERENCE Home care provider, Bluebird Care Peterborough and Oundle is offering people the opportunity to start a career in care. No prior care experience is necessary, the most important attribute for a Bluebird Care Care Assistant is a genuine compassion for people. A career with Bluebird Care Peterborough and Oundle allows you to make a real difference to people’s lives. With full training provided, Bluebird Care support their team to provide vital care and companionship. Rosalind Cerqua joined Bluebird Care over a year ago and she hasn’t looked back. Rosalind said: “The reason I decided to work for Bluebird Care was because I lost my mum very suddenly, and I was left with an enormous amount of heartache, but at the same time I was left with a whole lot of love that I needed to hand out. I’d worked in Healthcare before, within a hospital setting in Harrogate, and totally loved it! I enjoy my job, and working in the customer’s home gives the

opportunity for one-to-one care, rather than working in a hospital environment where it’s rush, rush, go, go, go. “My advice to anyone wanting to work within Bluebird Care would be to be open-minded, every single day and each customer is different, there’s ups and downs, and it’s ok to have feelings of sadness, but the great times and bonds with customers outweigh this by far.” Stacey Riddell started working as a Bluebird Care Care Assistant six months ago in the middle of the Covid-19 pandemic. Starting as bank staff before she took the decision to become a fulltime team member. Stacey said:

The joy of seeing those you care for happy is the most powerful feeling.” “I had worked in home care with a previous company, and I lost all faith in home care. Bluebird Care has turned that around for me. I have always had the passion for helping others and making a difference in someone’s life. Caring is the hardest job yet the joy of seeing those you care for happy is the most powerful feeling.”

Lakota (Lover of Nature)

No wonder there was a kingfisher poised on the railings, alongside Tinus Avenue, that I mentioned in February! I looked down into the canal the other day to see literally thousands of what I thought must be roach swirling around. There were fish of all sizes, with orange fins and tails. They appeared to be larger in size at one end of the canal, becoming smaller towards the other end. But none were visible in the adjoining canal. Quite a sight. Apparently the roach is the most abundant and widespread fish in England and is found in large ponds, lakes and slow flowing rivers. Its diet consists of plant material, small bottom living creatures and worms; making it essentially a fish that feeds on the bottom of waterways. It is itself a favourite food for grey herons; one is often seen around Hampton. If not caught or eaten, roach can live for between eight and fourteen years.

Three more great larva Following on from the three good larvae of last month here are three more great insect larvae for gardeners. This time all three are beetle larvae.

In the early 1800s nine out of ten anglers in London fished for roach. There was even a special rod called the London Roach Rod; later called a roach pole. The early ones started at four metres long with some later ones measuring up to nearly twice that! Apparently this length was to enable the anglers to place their float over far bank weed beds where roach might congregate. Sundays in London, when workers had a day off, saw large numbers of anglers on the banks of the River Lea, Thames and London canals. The Cockney cry of ‘got yer’ was heard every time a roach was caught. It seems that some East Anglian anglers are concerned that the size of the roach is reducing. The super aphid muncher the ladybird their larvae which are often mistaken for pests in their grey spikey armour consume closer to 5,000 aphids during the development process and often more than 100 in any day. Fennel and the rather less commonly grown tansy are great attractants for ladybirds who lay their eggs amongst aphids and then the feasting begins.

Apparently at one time it wasn’t unusual to catch roach that were two pounds in weight but now this is becoming much less common. They are concerned that numbers are declining and suggest that the cormorant is the reason why, due to their increase in numbers over recent years and large appetites! In the East End of London there is a place called Fish Island, so called because it has a river and canal on two of its sides. It was so titled due to the fact that its streets were all named after freshwater fish: Bream Street, Dace Road and, of course, Roach Road! Perhaps they should have named a street in Hampton after the roach. The final two great larvae are the rove beetle and ground beetle larvae. The adults of both these beetle groups are great controllers of slugs and other pests but their larvae too are beneficial in the garden. Ground beetle larvae are round and maggot like in appearance often with brown or orange heads. Close inspection will reveal six small legs and impressive jaws. These larvae are generally found under ground and are often confused with chafer grubs and other soil pests when in fact they are preying on wireworms and smaller slugs helping to protect out plants. The rove beetle larvae are similar in appearance but flatter more like a centipede, they will eat virtually any soil dwelling organisms they encounter from slug to leatherjacket. Remember all these beneficial insects and their larvae are as likely to be harmed by chemicals used to control pests so make space and safe areas in your garden for these wonderful gardening friends.

justvisiting Although Ferry Meadows to the west of the city centre does have its detractors (with reference to high car parking charges) it is in the main much loved and well used by Peterborians and visitors alike. Peterborough was designated a new town in 1968 and as part of that process more than 2,000 acres of land was set aside to form Nene Park, which stretches along the River Nene valley to Wansford with 500 acres of meadows, grassland, woodland and lakes, creating Ferry Meadows at its heart.

Ferry “Overall, a great day out.”

Andrew Wade often posts in one of the Hampton groups about different areas of interest in Peterborough and many people have commented, saying how much they enjoy this. Andrew will now be a regular contributor with his interesting features in future editions of the Hampton Gazette.

The lakes themselves were formed after five million tonnes of gravel were extracted as part of the construction of Peterborough’s 17-mile parkway system, without which the city and surrounding area would be permanently grid-locked. Because most of the land was originally agricultural and on the River Nene’s flood plain, it couldn’t be built on, and so was ideally suited to recreational use. The lakes today play an integral part in helping to prevent flooding by soaking up the extra water from heavy rainfall. The land was handed over to the Nene Park Trust in 1988; a charitable organization that does not receive any council or public funding. Activities such as windsurfing, kayaking, sailing, boating, cycling, running, and walking are

Andrew retired to Hampton in 2008 with his wife, and although she passed away in 2013, he is grateful to be living in this ‘great community’. Pictured is a photo of HMS Eagle, off Aden in 1967, which is one of the ships Andrew served on while in the Royal Navy during the 1960s.

Meadows well catered for, and it has the added benefit of the Nene Valley Railway running through it, along with a beautiful bluebell wood and nearby golf courses. The Caravan Club touring park is well patronised by visitors from outside the area while the Nene Park Visitor Centre and two cafés add to what is a pleasant day out at any time of the year. Milton Ferry Bridge in the parish of Castor was built across the River Nene in 1716 and used to be very close to the A47 road before the Castor bypass was built. Golfing enthusiasts are catered for with Thorpe Wood golf course while Orton Mere railway station, from where a steam or diesel train on the Nene Valley railway can be boarded, is a pleasant walk from the Visitor Centre. There is no doubt that Ferry Meadows and Nene Park are valuable aids to fresh air and recreation for both local residents and visitors and is well worth a visit at any time of the year. It is also a great place for children to explore wildlife and nature as well as letting off steam in a safe environment.

Sarah Hounsell

I have been mainly working in travel for 30 years, including as a homeworker for Hays Travel for three years, which enables me to book many fabulous holidays and also, pre-covid-19, to drive to people's houses and deliver tickets for a personal touch.

As I write this, holidays in England and Wales have resumed, with self-catering accommodation reopening in the former, and cross-border travel allowed to the latter (where self-catering accommodation has already reopened). Foreign holidays could resume as early as the middle of May for people in England, with a traffic light system set to replace the current ban on international travel on that date.

Green is for GO! People are now feeling more optimistic that they may escape over the summer months and the talk of traffic light destinations seems to be prevalent.

Countries will be rated ‘green’, ‘amber’ or ‘red’ under the UK Government’s system with only the ‘green list’ allowing for quarantine-free travel. There will also be a ‘green watch list’ to indicate which countries might soon be taken off the ‘green list’ The rating of each country will be decided based on the proportion of its

beaches. Greece is famous for its turquoise waters and breathtaking sandy beaches. Whether you are looking for an organized beach with sunbeds, umbrellas, beach bars and tavernas where you can party all day long or more secluded beaches with a peaceful environment to sunbathe and read your book, this is also a wonderful location for your next trip abroad. Many people have moved their holidays to next year in the hope that they may also be able to grab a late deal bargain in August but without good old Boris

Sea caves on Coral Bay coastline population that has been vaccinated, its infection rates, the prevalence of variants of concern and its capacity to sequence their genomes. But we will all need to keep checking Government updates over the following months to be sure of what we can and can’t do this summer. So, let’s look at the appeal of some of these destinations ... Cyprus is a good choice, with its incredible array of sandy beaches, family-friendly zones and long stretches of deserted shores. Coral Bay is great for families looking for safe swimming areas, and there are also plenty of watersports and family activities available there. Portugal boasts historic cities, world-renowned cuisine, natural landscapes and some of the world’s most spectacular

goodfood We caught up with Goretti Lobato, who owns Mattoni restaurant Hampton, in the midst of busy and excited preparations for opening for business again on 12 April, to find out how the lockdown has affected the restuaruant and plans for the future ...

Are you all set up for outdoor dining? Not seeing everyone for so long has been hard. We are very excited to see all our valued customers, many of whom have been coming to Mattoni for years. We are now just praying for good weather. We’ve purchased a large gazebo which is permitted, however, there are still restrictions in place (like it has to be 50% open and 1.5 metre distance between tables) so it doesn’t allow for much seating, but even if we just have 5 tables it’s way better than none. We have outdoor heaters and blankets to ensure our customers feel warm! Any new additions to the menu we can look forward to? Yes we have a new menu coming out which includes many delicious, filled pastas, new pizzas and new meat dishes etc., alongside all of our popular dishes. How has the lockdown affected Mattoni? It’s been tough. We’ve had a loss of around 90% and we’ve had to throw away a lot of stock yet still have to maintain running costs. However, we remained positive and continued with takeaway to help cover those costs as well as paying staff who didn’t qualify for furlough as they joined after the cut-off in September and at the time we didn’t predict another lockdown coming. What is the best part of your job? 200%, the people! We’ve built a relationship with our customers over time, we’ve seen their

children grow up! It’s a personal service, we know everyone by name and what they like to eat or drink, and it may sound cliché but they are part of the Mattoni family. Our customers make our work so enjoyable so much that the staff cannot wait to come back because they have truly missed seeing everyone. We are really blessed to have such amazing people come through the door. And what’s the worst? Honestly there isn’t one. I love what I do, and even if a night might doesn’t run 100% smoothly, I try to concentrate on the positives and rectify the negatives. I do take it to heart when someone doesn’t have a good night or there are mistakes but I will always do my best to fix them. I guess the only negative would be when we’ve done all we can to satisfy a (rare) unhappy customer and they just not willing to accept an apology or let me resolve the issue. My staff are always there to lift me up in those situations and remind me to focus on the 99% of happy customers. What is the most popular dish on your menu? Pizzas, without a doubt. I’m proud of our tried and tested recipes that have been perfected over the years. Secondly, the Polo Parolaccia, which customers have asked never goes off the menu. It won’t. There are so many more popular choices, which is why it’s taken so long to create a new menu; it was so hard to decide what to remove. I’m sure that with new menu people will still ask for old dishes and I’m sure we can still incorporate, but I’m so looking forward to the new menu,

How long have you owned the restaurant for? In Hampton, about 11-12 years, I’ve stopped counting! You now have two restaurants – Mattoni Hampton and Mattoni Eye. Do you have any plans to open a third? I wish I was 20 years younger, then I would open one more. I’d love to also own a deli / coffee shop, so it’s on the cards, but has to feel right. Before opening Mattoni Eye we went to see quite a few and upon walking in I just didn’t get the same feeling that I did when I walked into Hampton or Eye. I rely on the fact that, if it doesn’t feel right, I’ll keep looking until it does You have a very loyal customer base – what do you think people love most about Mattoni? Most definitely the personal relationship we build; we make it our priority to know what everyone likes and know their names, their partners and children etc. We also don’t take shorts cuts on products, only ever buying good quality, even if it means taking daily trips to supplies to get the freshest products - just ask Hugh! He is on first name basis with suppliers and the standing joke when he leaves is that they will say ‘see you later’. Can we see any of the popular music nights returning soon? We cannot wait for this to happen! We just need restrictions to be lifted then it’s full steam ahead. Again, we have built a great relationship with some great performers like Nicole Lawrence , Division Duo, and Cecil who are all on speed dial.

Laughter is the best medicine

Life after lockdown

Research suggests it’s worth knowing where you can get a good laugh as it may improve your health.

As lockdown lifts and summer dawns, for some of us, getting back to the social atmosphere of work, movies and dining out is a welcomed change. Whilst for others, would it be fair to say we like or even prefer the ‘new normal’ safe in the comfort of our homes.

Laughter is like a good massage - A good belly laugh relaxes the muscles for up to 45 minutes. It lowers stress and wards off colds - Stress hormones take a toll on our bodies making it difficult for us to fight off illness. Studies suggest that laughing not only reduces levels of these hormones, it boosts the immune system. So dig out those old episodes of Father Ted or Dad’s Army! It increases pain tolerance - According to neuroscientist Robert Provine, pain reduction is one of the biggest benefits of laughter. Studies have proved that those who watch or experience comedic content are able to tolerate more pain, probably due to the release of hormones called endorphins. It’s good exercise - The body’s response to laughter is quite similar to the body’s response to exercise. After several seconds of laughter, your heart rate elevates. We don’t recommend that lie about watching reruns of Seinfeld all day but as part of a healthy lifestyle comedy is a great addition. It’s a heart-friendly activity - Scientists at The University of Maryland determined that subjects with heart disease were 40 percent less likely to laugh in many situations compared to those without heart disease; and in fact were more prone to anger and hostility.

Research also suggests that we laugh even more when we are in the company of others, so you both get a double dose of healthy happiness.

Does the thought make you anxious?

pawsforthought A year ago, my wife threw out onto the front lawn some leftover cat food scraps. Her two spoilt indoor Ragdoll cats seem to only want fresh, tasty food in jelly, not something left to dry out overnight and harden with a crust. The scraps were her contribution to supporting the local birds, or so she thought.

Boris the Hungry Hampton Cat For half a day, the scraps remained, but later she noticed they were gone. ‘Birds’, she thought. The following few days, further scraps were thrown out. Again, they disappeared later in the day. But then I noticed it was not birds, but a cat, eating these scraps. The culprit was a skinny short-haired cat we ended up calling ‘Boris’. I can’t think why. He is a very friendly and a fully equipped male cat, proud of what he has, but very hungry, it seems. He will dance for his scraps each day and turn up at least half an hour before they are put out into ‘his’ food bowl. So keen is he to eat, he quickly grabs food from the bowl as other scraps are dropped. His head is quickly covered, but he just does not mind this. He just wants the food. Day after day, Boris was given scraps until I realise my wife was feeding Boris on prime virgin cat food. My questioning put me to shame. “Would I want him to go hungry? He obviously relies on us feeding him”. Shame on me! Our other cats were aware of his presence, and I swear they left food for him. He began to affect the whole family and costing me fourteen sashes of cat food a week. I thought he must be a stray cat and should be rehomed. My local vet told me to catch him and take him to the local shelter. There are a couple

By Thomas – a local resident

nearby. But catching a cat is not easy. If you have a trap, it is easy, but we did not. He was quicker than we were. We contacted the RSPCA, who we not interest. They simply said, ‘Do not feed him’. Helpful advice, which my wife ignored. The City Council said, ‘Do not feed him’. My wife thought, how can they be so cruel to the poor cat. Everything changed when he suddenly turned up for his morning breakfast as normal, but with a nice pretty collar and bell around his neck. Same old Boris, just as hungry, but with a necklace. A badge of ownership, like a wedding ring for a man, my wife said. I humbly agreed and ducked just in case. Months of cat food later, Boris still arrives and waits for his breakfast. He can now quickly eat two sashes of prime cat food in one sitting. Often afternoon tea is also expected. But the supply of free cat food has also been noticed by other local cats. They turn up and vocally challenge Boris for his right to a free meal. Cats are not necessarily always in tune and are tone-deaf to anyone who enjoys birdsong. It is just embarrassing as the neighbours think we own lots of cats. Driving home one day, I saw Boris about 200m from home trotting along the pavement. I had never really thought that somewhere he had a real home of his own. Being hungry is a sign of

Boris is very active on the local cat dating scene

Boris the Hungry Hampton Cat lack of love if he has an owner. Why did he spend so much time sitting in the bushes in our front garden waiting for food? Since this sighting, I have driven along alternative routes to home and have spotted him. He is often sitting or walking in adjoining neighbourhoods. His routes around the locality are via gardens and over fences. Not by streets and front doors. Cats see the world differently and travel quickly as the ‘crow flies’ mostly. Boris, it seems, travels the neighbourhood picking up meals here and there. He probably arrives home late at night well feed, ready for a good night sleep. I assume his house does not have a ‘cat-flap’, and the owners accept minimum responsibility for him. The main worry is illness or injury and whether he is insured. The advice my wife was given of ‘Do not feed the cat’ was perhaps correct. A cat can only have one real owner, and we were wrong in feeding ‘Boris’ no matter how well our intentioned were. So the feeding has now stopped. We still see Boris. He comes and suns himself in the front garden. Despite his skinny initial appearance, we can now see he is a very fit and muscular cat and very active on the local cat dating scene, it seems. It must be such a lovely life.

pawsforthought If there is one message all pet owners can agree on from the past year, it’s that it has been wonderful to spend so much time with our pets during lockdown, and that they have loved having us around.

Lockdown Dogs Written by Pamela Game@ Pampered Pooch www.Pamperdpooch.online Our dogs have undoubtedly given us essential support, companionship and exercise during uncertain times. For many people changes in lifestyle and working hours have allowed them to have a puppy for the first time.

short spells is an essential life skill for dogs. For dogs that are not used to being alone it can cause extreme distress and anxiety.

However, we might be setting our dogs up to fail by not preparing them for being left alone when restrictions ease, and we need to return to work and school. A study by Dogs Trust showed that before the pandemic 14% of dogs were not left at home for longer than 5 minutes, but that this increased to 58% during the lock-down. That’s an awful lot of dogs who are now used to having their humans around much more.

..Destructive behaviour like chewing

Although we should never aim to leave them alone for long periods, being able to be left for

GROOMING

Provide mental stimulation, tiredness is not just physical. Brain games like hide and seek with treats, puzzle feeders and snuffle mats tap into our dog’s natural scenting and hunting abilities.

Signs of separation anxiety in dogs

Create a safe cosy den space (stair gates are useful) and encourage your dog to settle there with treats and toys.

..Barking, howling or whining ..Pacing, panting or trembling

Gradually build up the time and distance of separation - this might just be a different room initially, progress-ing to leaving the house for longer periods. If your dog shows any signs of distress, you have progressed too fast, go back a step.

..Toileting in the house

Preparing your dog to be left alone The time to start is now while we can gradually make changes to our dogs’ routines, and be there to support their training before we are summoned back to the office!

Speak to your vet or veterinary nurse about calming products like pheromone diffusers, or to seek further behavioural help for established cases of anxiety.

Firstly, ensure their exercise needs are met - a tired dog is a good dog.

moneymatters TAX TIPS

How to pay less

This is the first in a series of many tax tips from Bird & Co that will be spread over a period that may help you with a few of the many ways to save on tax, including checking your tax code, making the most of tax-free allowances and dozens of other ways to reduce your tax bill. by Pete Bird, Bird & Co, Certified Public Accountants

Tax Tip 1 Check your PAYE tax code - your tax code indicates how much tax HMRC will collect from your salary. You can find it on your payslip. Check your tax code each year, or after changing jobs, to make sure it's correct for your situation. You can find further details or amend the code by logging into your Personal Tax Account (PTA) If your employer is using the wrong code, you may get it amended as well as be entitled to pay less tax in coming months, or receive a refund for previous years.

Tax Tip 2 Claim tax credits - tax credits provide extra money to those looking after children, disabled workers and other workers on low incomes. The two main types you can claim: working tax credits and child tax credits. Keep in mind that you can't claim tax credits if you already receive Universal Credit.

Tax Tip 3 Pay into a pension scheme contributions to your employer's pension scheme (including any additional voluntary contributions you make) can be made from your gross pay, before any tax is charged. The government will top up your pension with tax relief, giving you a free bonus for saving for retirement.

Tax Tip 4 Benefit from marriage allowance marriage allowance is a tax perk that benefits couples where one partner earns less than the personal allowance. If you're married or in a civil partnership, you can transfer any unused personal allowance from the lower-earning partner to the higher earner. Up to £1,250 can be transferred in 2020-21, potentially saving you up to £250. To qualify, the higher earner must be a 20% taxpayer.

Tax Tip 5 Meet the tax return deadline - if you're one of the 12m people who need to submit a self-assessment tax return, make sure you don't miss the deadline. It's a costly and easily-avoided mistake. For online submissions, you have until 31 January 2022 to send in your 2020/2021 return. But if you want to file on paper, you'll need to submit by 31 October 2021. Miss the deadline and there's an automatic £100 fine - even if you don't owe any tax.

p u N Pre p u N Post by Belinda Smith & Co Solicitors

If you are planning on marrying and are concerned to preserve property and/or money you have acquired before your relationship began and which you don’t think would be fair to share equally with your future spouse if you ever came to divorce, then you can draw up a Pre-nuptial Agreement to protect your pre-acquired assets. This may not be the most romantic start to your marriage, but it will put your mind at rest, you can store the document in a bottom drawer and hopefully never have to think of it again. The general principle on divorce is that what is mine is yours and what is yours is mine, and the starting point of sharing them out will be 50:50. There are many situations where this would not necessarily be fair but you need to protect such assets with a specific agreement. This should be drawn up in good time before your marriage, start thinking about it at least 6 months beforehand. It has to be with the full agreement of your future spouse as

well who will also need to take legal advice before signing the deed. It may also happen that during the course of a marriage one of the spouses comes into possession of a property or other assets through inheritance or gift from a family member. A Post-nuptial agreement would be appropriate in this situation, again with the full consent of your spouse which would serve to ringfence the asset in question in the event of relationship breakdown. Although nuptial agreements are nowadays generally considered binding by the Courts, there are still complexities that you will need to discuss with your family law solicitor to ensure they will prove effective .

Tax Tip 6 Reclaim overpaid taxes - if you are a non-taxpayer, or your income unexpected falls during a year, you may find that you've been taxed more than you should have done, as HMRC assumes your personal allowance is equally used each month. To reclaim, fill out form R40 from HMRC, or call them.

Don’t get caught out by the letterbox fraudsters Imagine the scene – summer is just around the corner, lockdown continues to ease and you are ready to welcome friends and family for some alfresco dining or a garden gathering.

But some of your property’s exterior is looking a little tired, your outdoor space needs some TLC and you have good intentions of getting someone in for the job before welcoming visitors back into your home.

Whatever the job – big or small – don’t be tempted to give the work to someone who cold calls you at your home, claiming to be ‘carrying out similar work in the area’, either with or without a leaflet.

And then, as luck would have it, a leaflet drops through your door with details of that landscaper, driveway professional or guttering replacement company you have been looking for.

Remember:

However, all may not be as it seems. While many companies who leaflet drop may be genuine, there are many rogue traders who use this method of advertising and their leaflets are getting very sophisticated. In fact, some are printing leaflets and including details of genuine companies to make themselves look honest and reputable. The leaflet shown here, which was shared by the police, is a genuine company but the phone number was fake and was redirected to a mobile number. The victims of this particular leaflet were mostly elderly, lured by the ‘special rates’. If someone posts a leaflet through your door, never hand over any money until you have a written quote and have checked that the tradesperson and company are genuine. It is also advisable to always get three quotes prior to getting work carried out.

 Don’t be talked into something on the spur of the moment  Don’t take their word for it when they tell you urgent work or repairs need doing  Never hand over any cash as a deposit for work which they say they will return to carry out  Feel free to ask to see their credentials and /or examples of their work  Always ask them politely to leave if you feel uncomfortable with their approach If you are in the market for a new driveway or patio or are dreaming of a new lawn or garden for the summer – then always use a reputable tradesperson. The door knocking scams of cowboy landscapers and other outdoor trades are becoming more and more common, and their patter and false leaflets are more sophisticated. No reputable tradesperson will come knocking on your door ‘touting’ for business.

If you would like to find a reputable and recommended tradesperson in your area visit www.safelocaltrades. com AND if you are suspicious of a leaflet – accept it politely without committing yourself to anything and then do your research or put it in the recycling bin! Visit www.safelocaltrades.com
