welcome to the November issue of the Hampton Gazette Autumn is a very exciting time with lots happening in Hampton, including charity events and Christmas Fayres. This month, we have a great feature on eating out and Christmas gift ideas, plus the results of the O&H Hampton’s photographic competition. There were so many fantastic entries, but we have tried to print as many as we can inside. Don’t forget to join our Facebook page as it’s a great way to share ideas, ask questions, talk about the local community and maybe make new friends. Please mention the Hampton Gazette when you approach any of the advertisers as without them this publication would not be possible. Hopefully, we have most services covered for you, but if you think we are missing a trade let us know. Please keep sending in your views, top tips or moans and groans that you would like to share with other readers. This is your community magazine and we try to get in as much as possible each month for you. Thank you for your continued support.

Your business
Moving home could not be easier Step 1 Your home will sell much faster if it does not look cluttered. Make your home look more spacious and you will make it more attractive to potential buyers. Let’s start the moving process before you sell, and take the pressure of all the last minute work. We will deliver to your house, free of charge, one of our INBOX pods. It will sit on our trailer outside your home and you can pack it at your leisure, with all of those things you don’t need for a while, and any excess furniture you don’t need or use (but don’t want to lose).
Step 2 You padlock your pod and we collect it and store it for you in our secure indoor warehouse. If you need more, we can deliver more. Again, there is no charge for delivery or collection. You can have access your pod at any time whilst it is in our store and have as many pods as you need.
Step 3 Once you have exchanged, you can begin the house moving process gradually filling pods, in your own time and only leave essential items until the last minute. Easy! No stress! No Time pressures! No expensive removal companies! It could not be easier (or more cost effective).
Step 4 We deliver your pods to your new home as you want them. Again, you can take your time and have them one at a time, when you want them.
Unit 1, Holme Road, Yaxley, Peterborough PE7 3NA. T: 01733241869
4
You will only be charged for the time the pods are in storage. Prices start at £60 per month. • Delivery is free within a 30 mile radius of our warehouse in Yaxley, thereafter it is at £ 1.00 per mile. • We can store your pods for as long as you need us to. • Note. We also have 20ft Steel containers available for on- site rental, at very competitive prices. • Call us now and find out how we can help you make your move so much easier!

Cadasil Charity Fete
15th November 12pm until 6pm, in the Housing 21 Care Home near Tesco.
Hampton Nature Reserve Hampton Nature Reserve (HNR) is a huge wild space nestled between the Hamptons and Orton Goldhay. The site’s rugged terrain and 300+ ponds are artefacts of its industrial heritage as a clay pit. However, this uniquely man-made landscape has proven to be perfect for wildlife, chiefly the great crested newt, playing home to the largest population in the world. Froglife and a team of volunteers manage HNR on behalf of the landowners, O&H. Teams go out every Thursday and two Saturdays per month to cut back the encroaching scrub to burn on bonfires (which are also great for baking potatoes and roasting marshmallows!). Although the volunteer teams were set up to manage the site they quickly evolved into a social event with members dropping in whenever they can and often becoming regulars. For more information about volunteering on Hampton Nature Reserve please contact the Warden, Paul Furnborough, on 07508020437 or paul.furnborough@froglife.org
The event promises a day filled with tombolas, raffles, face painting and much more besides. The family run event not only promises the opportunity to change local people’s lives but also the chance to win some amazing prizes, donations for the afternoon have been made by the likes of Woburn Safari Park as well as Arsenal and West Ham Football Clubs. All proceeds from the event will be donated to a specialist neurologist in Cambridge who is a professor of the Cadasil charity, an individual who may be fundamental in the discovery of a cure for the disease. This provides a great opportunity for all residents to enjoy a fun, exciting afternoon out, as well as improving the lives of local Cadasil sufferers. Make sure you dont miss it, 15th November, 12pm until 6pm, in the Housing 21 Care Home near Tesco. I will see you there. For more information on Cadasil and the event, please visit www.chorleycadasil.btck.co.uk
About Cadasil Cadasil occurs when a thickening of blood vessel walls leads to a blockage of blood flow in the brain, something that leads to early demantia and possibly even strokes in young adults. Cadasil currently has no effective treatments, meaning sufferers have to live without a chance of recovery. Research is still being carried out and there is hope new treatments for patients will be developed in the near future. However, we need your help to ensure this research can be done and treatments brought out. Cadasil organisation CHORLEY has organised a charity fun day in Hampton and is calling on all residents to dedicate some of their time to find out more about the disease and donate to its cause.

The wildlife of Hampton In late autumn in November there is still much wildlife around Hampton to appreciate, even though hard frosts may have started, heralding the onset of winter, as the dew from the ground condenses during the night. November sees the last of the leaves from the deciduous trees falling to the ground. The only exception may be the beech, which may hang on for a little longer to its now coppery leaves. The oak also waits until November to show its most vibrant autumn hues. Their acorns fall in abundance during November providing a rich feast for jays and grey squirrels. The last of the summer bird migrants leave during the month but are replaced with winter migrants from colder climes. In the woodland areas around Hampton the fallen leaves provide a rich bed for fungi of various types.
November also sees Hampton’s hedgehogs beginning their hibernation period, if the weather is cold enough. However, if we have a mild winter, and there is enough food, they may not hibernate at all. As the weather becomes colder they build nests in which to hibernate. Favourite places for building these are under timber buildings, in piles of branches, twigs and leaves, or in compost heaps. During hibernation hedgehogs’ body functions slow right down in order to conserve energy; their heart rate drops from 190 beats a minute to only 20 beats a minute, and their body temperature drops from 35 degrees Celsius to 10 degrees Celsius. Hedgehogs are known as the gardener’s friend because they eat slugs and snails, and other pests, which damage plants. They are, therefore, to be encouraged in Hampton gardens. Leaving piles of leaves and twigs in the garden will give them places to nest and tinned dog food left out at sunset, when hedgehogs begin to become active, they are nocturnal, will provide extra food. I can attest to this seeing one helping itself to our dog’s food bowl recently! by Lakota (Lover of Nature)

Autumn is well and truly here and the dark nights seem to have crept up on us a lot earlier than I remember. However, this makes for some very cosy nights in, and out, for the Hampton WI ladies and our October meeting was no exception. We learnt about the origins and history of Chocolate. We then had a go at trying to identify 10 different types of chocolate. Of course this involved eating it which was no great hardship! On a festive note, the countdown is on for Christmas. Are you ready? We all know someone who is, but if you are anything like some of our WI ladies, you still have Turkey to order, crackers to make, decisions on what colour scheme your Christmas table will be and not forgetting a few presents or baubles still to buy. Well, hopefully, we can help with the presents and baubles!

Friday Night Football Dear parents, I am happy to announce that Hampton Friday Night Football have received funding to see us through next calendar year 2014/2015. These were kindly provided by Hampton Parish council. Since August 2012 this social inclusion project has seen over 200 different young people attend, it provides a productive outlet for young people on a Friday night. Each session is attended on average by 20 young people(males) aged 11 -15years every Friday evening 19:00-21:00hrs. The group engages children in a positive, active task on a Friday night instead of potential destructive or anti-social activities. The group makes a difference, improving the football skills, but also developing the young people into disciplined, contributing members of the community with some of the senior players moving onto becoming coaches for the younger children. As you may be aware this project is run by volunteers. Unfortunately for various personal reasons our current volunteers are unable to commit as much to the project. For these reasons we are currently looking for volunteers, please contact PCSO Igor Simonov 07736086953 igor.simonov@cambs.pnn.police.uk or Chas Ryan charlesryan@btinternet.com if you are interested. There is opportunity to obtain FA football coaching qualifications. Kind regards PCSO Igor Simonov

Hampton Health We are entering the season where there are more coughs, colds and sore throats about which means more pressure on the surgery for appointments, however if you do have one of these conditions your GP surgery doesn’t have to be your first port of call. Generally coughs, colds, headaches, sore throats, cuts and grazes and diarrhoea can be treated at home with over the counter medication from your local pharmacy and plenty of rest. In addition your local high street pharmacy can provide confidential, expert advice and treatment for a range of common illnesses and complaints without having to wait for a GP appointment. If however you find the illness is going away please contact the surgery for an appointment. Telephone appointments for advice are also available with our GPs and Nurse practitioners. From November we will be offering additional appointments with one of our Practice Nurses in a new regular minor illness clinic on Friday afternoons. NHS Direct has now been replaced by NHS 111 which you should use if you need medical help or advice urgently, but it’s not a life threatening situation. Calling 111 will connect you to a team of fully trained call advisers who are supported by experienced nurses and paramedics. You should call 111 if you think you need to go to A&E or another NHS urgent care service but you are not sure, if you think you can’t wait for an appointment with your GP or you don’t know who to call for medical help. If they decide you do need an ambulance ringing 111 won’t delay this, they will dispatch one immediately – just as if you had originally dialled 999. Don’t forget Peterborough Minor Illness and Injury Unit is also available Monday to Sunday 8am – 8pm. This is situated in the City Care Centre in Thorpe Road, and they can offer x-rays on weekdays, treatment of wounds, cuts, and bites, minor burns and scalds, muscle and joint injuries including fractures and sports injuries, minor head injuries, eye problems including removal of foreign bodies and conjunctivitis, ear ache (patients aged 2 years and over) and emergency contraception. A&E is available for critical or life-threatening and emergency conditions only. Please choose well this winter to help the NHS manage its resources.

New Victims’ Hub launched to help victims of crime in Cambridgeshire On 1st October 2014, a pioneering new hub was launched by Cambridgeshire Police to help support victims of crime by providing a more centralised and co-ordinated local framework for help and support.
Beautiful jewellery & accessories to purchase online or from Simply Beauty in Yaxley. Jewellery parties in your own home! Something to suit every girl, young or old!
shopping@daisyloves.co.uk
www.daisyloves.co.uk
Funding for this service passed from the Ministry of Justice to Police & Crime Commissioners to enable a far more locally driven provision for victims of crime to be created. All forces have to change the way they operate their victim support by the spring 2015, so Cambridgeshire Constabulary were keen to start early. They are one of seven forces leading the way nationally to provide a local service for victims, from which a range of support can be accessed. Victims of crime will be assessed to determine the level of support they need and then helped in the most appropriate way, bringing in specialist services and other agencies as required. By managing support services at a local level, the service will be better able to meet the needs of the communities and target provision to where it is most needed. Officers investigating crime will highlight vulnerable victims to the hub - but all victims of crime will be given contact details for the hub if they feel they need extra support. How crime affects a victim or witness depends entirely on the individual. The most important thing to remember is that a more centralised and efficient network of help is now available.
You can contact the Victims’ Hub by calling 0800 781 6818 (Monday - Friday, 8am to 8pm and Saturday 9am to 5pm) or emailing victimshub@cambs.police.uk For more details about the hub, visit www.cambsvictimshub.co.uk

The Parish Church of Hampton
Christ the Servant King
It’s the Autumn and the time of year when the television programs generally seem to get a little better. Is it ‘Strictly Come Dancing’ or ‘The X Factor’ that is your cup of tea on a Saturday evening? For anyone who hasn’t watched either, each program has a panel of judges who are often quite direct and sometimes extremely insensitive and cruel as they deliver their comments to the contestants. The saying, ‘Sticks and stones may break your bones but calling names won’t hurt’, is just so untrue. Words can really hurt, and gossip can cause such pain and damage. That’s why God advises us in the Bible not to judge, to be careful with our tongues, and not to gossip. At Christ the Servant King Church we try to love all people, just as we have discovered the love of God for ourselves. There isn’t a panel of judges waiting to critique anyone who comes along to meet with us, just a friendly face to greet you and welcome you just as you are. Please do come along and visit us any Sunday morning at 10am. We look forward to meeting you.
Every Blessing,
Sy lvi a

The judging panel had great fun going through all the photographs and we were sorry not to be able to award prizes to them all. We loved seeing how people have been enjoying themselves on Hampton over the summer months, and to see Hampton itself pictured in such a beautiful light. Thank you to everyone who took time to enter the competition.“ Roger Tallowin

Hampton 2020
Your guide to
Living in Hampton
“The vision is to create a series of new villages as part of the growth of ‘The Hamptons’, a unique area offering a fantastic quality of life within an exceptional landscape and waterfront setting.” A beautiful landscape, unrivalled opportunities for leisure and play, and a home for life: these goals are at the heart of our vision for the Hamptons’ next chapter. 2015 will see the vision begin to take shape as work starts on the first of four new villages to the east of the A15. Hampton Beach, Hampton Gardens, Hampton Woods and Hampton Water will each have their own distinctive character, features and appeal. At the same time, each will be an integral part of an overall design that wraps country park around and through the development – as we’ve already done so successfully in Hampton Hargate and Hampton Vale. To the south of the villages, The Hamlets will feature a few small clusters of larger properties with potential for self-build. Four new village communities We plan to make the most of the area’s existing lakes, woodlands and open spaces – which are already notable sites for wildlife and leisure. Through enhancing these natural features our four villages will offer new and existing Hamptons’ residents: • A host of new leisure opportunities such as sailing, swimming, walking and bird watching • All the advantages of village life - personality, a vibrant community, accessible, high quality services, safety and a real sense of belonging – within reach of Peterborough’s lively city centre • The flexibility to meet different needs at every stage of life, from single professionals, through growing families to active older years. Each of these new villages will also be a part of the wider communities at Hampton Hargate and Hampton Vale; together the area will become known as The Hamptons. Keep visiting the website to be the first to hear as The Hamptons’ future begins to take shape. Don’t move in too soon! Should divorcing wives or husbands who become involved in another relationship see their divorce settlements reduced as a result? Mr Justice Mostyn said in a case in the Family Division of the High Court last month that such relationships were “a significant fly in the ointment” when the court was deciding how much money husbands should give wives on a marriage breakup. (It is usually that way round). The case in question involved a journalist and her estranged husband who came from a wealthy family and the woman had started a new relationship nine months before with a man who was about to buy a house. The predicament of the Judge was whether he should take the new relationship into account when assessing the wife’s needs for re-housing. Such an approach is actually not good law at the present time. The intention to cohabit in the near future or even cohabitation itself is usually viewed by the Court as unimportant, because there is no legal force to a live-in relationship – it is only marriage which brings with it rights and obligations. This is despite years of campaigning by various interested bodies, trying to get cohabitation formalised in the eyes of the law, especially for women who can risk being stranded, penniless and homeless, even after a very long relationship. Judge Mostyn has therefore not made new law, but could this be the start of a trend of the courts to give greater weight to the relevance of cohabitation in divorce cases? So, just a note of warning…

From anxiety and depression to achieving a life-long dream
How Hypnotherapy changed my life! A staggering 1 in 10 of us will suffer from a “disabling” anxiety disorder at some point in our lives however studies show that only 15% of us will receive any treatment.

But we don’t have to suffer in silence. Steve’s story shows us that there is a way back from even the most desperate of situations. “Life before hypnotherapy consisted of a constant feeling of anxiety. My confidence was at rock bottom – I felt so inadequate, even amongst family and friends, so I isolated myself to avoid difficult situations. Moments of high anxiety would be followed by feelings of deep depression. I knew I couldn’t carry on this way – every day the situation was spiralling further out of control. A friend told me about Gary Johannes at Inspired to Change Hypnotherapy. I didn’t know how he could help me and I was very unsure about seeing a “therapist” but I was desperate to find a way out of this situation. My first appointment was such a relief! Gary explained to me what was going on in my brain and why I was feeling the way I was. Finally it all made sense! Gary’s simple explanations of how hypnotherapy worked helped me see that it was possible to get better in a matter of weeks rather than months or years. Every session with Gary helped me to fix a specific problem. For the first time in my life I felt true freedom. My friends and family started commenting on how much nicer it was to be around me and that helped me to feel even better. It felt so good to be able to relax at last. I know it sounds like a cliché but discovering how amazing hypnotherapy is really has changed my life. I run my own business now. My new found confidence has helped me follow my dream. My advice to anyone who is feeling anxious, worried or low? Don’t wait until you are at rock bottom like I did, there is help out there that doesn’t involve signing up to years of counselling and a painful trawling through your past.” Inspired to Change Hypnotherapy have clinics in Peterborough, Thrapston and Maidstone all offering free initial consultations to help you understand how hypnotherapy can help you get back control of your life. People from across the city and from all walks of life slept under cardboard in a field in Ferry Meadows to highlight the plight of the homeless in Peterborough. Members of the prison service, police, church leaders, the High Sheriff of Cambridgeshire, former homeless people, ex addicts, the general public and staff from Hope into Action slept under the stars and listened to the real life experiences of what life is like for the homeless by former homeless people themselves. The night was a great success with nearly ten thousand pounds raised for Hope into Action, which will be used to support the most vulnerable people in Peterborough and beyond. Hope into Action, the award winning Peterborough-based charity which houses the homeless in partnership with local churches, hosted its first Big Sleep Out at Ferry Meadows on Friday 10th October to coincide with World Homeless Day and highlight its work.

Hampton Schools
Hargate Primary School Where is the autumn term going? It only seems like 5 minutes since we were starting back at school after the summer break! We have been so busy with classroom visits, class assemblies, parents evening and our Harvest Festival (to mention but a few!). We had a special visit from Peter Burrow and two of the Posh Players last month. They took a whole school assembly which was buzzing and the children had an opportunity to ask the players some burning questions! Key Stage 2 children also enjoyed a visit from the Peterborough Yamaha Music School. They presented an interactive musical show for the children and managed to create lots of wonderful noise! In other news, The Golden Lock is back on the scene. To encourage children to come to school on their bike or scooters, our Bike It Crew have been putting the Golden Lock on a random bike or scooter that is placed in the bike racks once a week. The lucky owner of that bike or scooter is then awarded a prize. In fundraising news, a massive THANK YOU to everyone who collected sponsorship money for the Macmillan Run which took place in Hampton on Friday 19th September. Despite the weather, the children did a fantastic job at running round the lake and we are delighted to announce that we have raised a whopping total of £1262.25p!!! to add to the funds raised by the other Hampton Schools. Also several members of our staff took part in the Race for Life in the summer term and with the non-uniform day at the beginning of term they have raised an amazing £1400!! Thank you for all your support with our fundraising, it really is appreciated. Finally, our Twitter feed is now up and running and can be accessed by clicking on the link on our website or by following us @HamptonHargate

Hampton Vale Primary School The world of numbers, shape and measure has been in the spotlight at Hampton Vale Primary School thanks to a series of maths events for children across the school. Threedimensional puzzles and challenges were the focus for Key Stage Two children at a Happy Puzzle Day, which also gave the children opportunities to improve their learning and problem-solving skills. Earlier, Year Six children, inspired by their Ancient Egypt theme, designed tombs in order to calculate the area and perimeter of a Pharaoh’s tomb. They also drew on their learning in a unit about proportionality to create an accurately scaled tomb and model of the Great Pyramid of Giza, the base of which they ensured contained right angles by using the techniques used by the Ancient Egyptians themselves. In Year Three, the children, many of them dressed as explorers, drew on their current All About Chocolate theme to become Aztec-inspired explorers for outdoor learning focused on directions, points of the compass, co-ordinates and measurements. Meanwhile, huge numbers were the focus for Year Five children as part of their Space Adventures theme, for which they calculated the dimensions of Solar System planets and drew them to scale before placing them at relative distances on the playground. At their lunar landings conference, the Year Five children also calculated the costs of a trip to space. And - just weeks into their time at the school - the Foundation Stage children took part in a Numberjacksinspired number adventure around the whole of the school. Meanwhile, the first of the school’s year group productions for this year - Bumper Harvest, performed by the Year Two children - has been staged to audiences made up of the rest of the school and parents and carers.

Vale Community Pre-school School Vale Community Pre-school would like to wish a warm welcome to all their new children and families, and over the last few weeks it has been really nice to see all the children settling into pre-school life so well and making lots of new.
Little Acorn Pre School Little Acorns Day Nursery and Montessori School This month we have been enjoying our new Montessori room and our new play area in the preschool that was recently built. We also have a lovely new garden to play in. We were able to watch the build from start to finish. We have also opened our new Daisy Room for toddlers. We have been learning about Diwali and created some lovely chalk Rangoli pictures. We also celebrated Halloween and made cards and lanterns. We have taken advantage of the windy weather and have been playing in the leaves. Our parents had fun spending quality time with their children during parent activity stay and play week. The children were very proud to show their parents around the preschool and they were able to get involved in the fun activities. If you would like to enquire about our Nursery please contact us on: 01733 244000 or visit www.littleacorns-daynursery.co.uk
This term the children have been getting creative as part of our “All about me” topic, they have enjoyed using play dough to create mini models of themselves as well as using the messy trays to make hand and foot prints with paint.
Hampton College Primary The year 2 children at Hampton College Primary Phase have been having a great few weeks. On Friday 19th September they all took part in the Macmillian fun run and had a brilliant time joining in the race and taking in the atmosphere that the community had provided.. Some of the children also found this quite a challenge but said they were determined to do it to raise lots of money and improve their health and fitness. All the children that took part were rewarded with a sticker and certificate. On Tuesday 23rd September a local policeman from our Hampton station went into to talk to the children about being a police officer. The children were fascinated by this and loved pressing the siren and going in the jail in the back of the police van. Some of the children experienced being handcuffed and got to use the spray which makes people cry. But the best part of all was dressing up as policeman and trying on the helmets and bright coloured clothing. Big thanks to the Year 2 children at Hampton College for putting this article together with me.

Over the last few weeks the pre-school has been taking delivery of lots of new equipment for inside and outside, sensory baskets, story baskets, play trays, construction site role play equipment, micro scooters and balance bikes, a trampoline, and a wide variety of creative equipment. We have also had a large wooden play ship built for outside area; this will now be a permanent fixture in the garden. The play ship will provide the Pre-school children with an opportunity to develop both their physical and imaginative skills. Hampton Pets
Fantastic, ethical & caring environment for pets Having been a secondary school teacher for 20 years, and with a love of animals, Marie-Line felt ready for a change of career and now manages the PetStay Peterborough Branch.
“
My three adorable cocker spaniel puppies; Charlie, Maya and Rosie each have their own personality, likes and dislikes, and can be so mischievious at times and hard work but they’re great company and bring me so much joy that I just can’t envisage life without them anymore. I think it is so important that people are offered the best choices of care for their pet(s).
I am very keen to keep my own pets happy, safe and healthy. I often go to France to visit my family but I can’t always take them with me. I just couldn’t bear the thought of having to leave them in a kennel when was away! I read about PetStay and thought it was a fantastic, ethical and caring idea, exactly what I was looking for for my 3 lovable rascals …and for a new career too! With PetStay, I am reassured that our pets will be cared for in a safe and caring home environment as I carefully select all our dog loving carers who are fully insured, vetted and fully licensed! I also endeavour to match the right carer for each dog! My second concern for my puppies was to keep them healthy and I turned my attention to food. I came across a fantastic Swedish company called Husse who offers premium quality dog food, packed full with nutrients and antioxidants, highly digestible, ethically made and with a wide
“
range of products to suit every dog from puppies to old dogs, pregnant biches and fussy eaters. It is so good that it is fit for human consumption but I can’t say I have tried it myself! It is competitively priced, delivered home for free and comes with access to personalised nutritional advice from a fully trained and qualified Husse pet nutritionist. The pet nutritionist initially offers a ‘dinner date’ where they visit your house, pockets full of goodies and samples and assess the nutritional needs of the pets before matching the right food for them and then follows the pet’s nutritional needs all its life. I was so impressed that I became a Husse pet nutritionist myself and I now also help pet owners make healthy food choices for their pets. If you would like to know more about PetStay and Husse, don’t hesitate to contact me, I would be very happy to help.

Wildcats children’s musical theatre in Hampton Wildcats is all about having fun, making friends, developing confidence and being part of an amazing team of children, young people and adults who are part of the school. The students come from every possible performing arts background - whilst some have experience on the stage, others have enjoyed singing, dance or drama at home - but for some, it is their first taste of the world of performing arts.
All students have the chance to take examinations in Musical Theatre and also be part of a large scale yearly showcase performance.
Whatever a child’s ability or experience they are welcome at Wildcats - they work with each individual child to develop and achieve their own potential. They also welcome children who are looking for new ways to help increase confidence in school and everyday life. They have lots of girls and boys who have developed huge improvements in confidence through attendance at classes and this can be a great boost in terms of academic achievement in school.
Wildcats now have spaces in their classes at Hampton Vale Primary School every Tuesday – 5-6pm for ages 4-7 years, and 6.00pm – 7.15pm for ages 8-12 years.
For more information or to book a taster session call Wildcats on 01780 762000 or visit
