Hampton Community Remembrance Service Sunday 10 November 10.30am Brendan O’Sullivan
Reverend Sylvia Kinder, Hampton Parish Council (HPC), O&H Hampton, Hampton Scout Group and Hampton Guides warmly invite the Hampton community to join in with The Hampton Remembrance Day Service The Hampton Remembrance Service will be hosted in the Food Court Atrium Area of Serpentine Green Centre. To show the due reverence that the Hampton community has in recognising this annual, national Act of Remembrance, Reverend Sylvia will lead a procession from the Serpentine Green entrance adjacent to the M&S store, at 1020. The procession will permit representatives from CSK Church, parish and local councillors, the scout and guide groups and their standard bearers, to lead the procession down to the Atrium. A warm welcome is extended to everyone to join in to ensure that we loyally continue to respectfully commemorate Remembrance Day.
‘When you go home, tell them of us and say, for your tomorrow, we gave our today’. We hope that our annual Hampton Memorial Service will ensure that our community continues to mark the national Act of Remembrance to respectfully honour that, ’At the going down of the Sun, and in the morning, We will Remember Them’. For, and on behalf of: Reverend Sylvia, O&H Hampton, Hampton Parish Council, Hampton Guide Unit and Hampton Scout Group.

Hayley Evans is an entrepreneur and mum of two living in Hampton, Peterborough. On 10 October - World Mental Health Day - Hayley tattooed 14 people back to back, at her studio Ink Imaginarium, in Woodston. 25% of the proceeds were donated to national charity, Scar Cover Up Freedom Fund (SCUFF) Mental health of young people in the UK is worsening. The Royal College of Psychiatrists report “About 1 in 10 young people will self-harm at some point, but it can happen at any age”. SCUFF is one of few UK charities which provide funding for tattoos specifically to cover up self harm scars. SCUFFs aim is to “...support those with self-harm scars by funding tattoo cover ups. This gives them the chance for a new start, boosting their confidence, helping them in their recovery and making something beautiful out of the pain of the past.” Hayley has been a self harmer in the past
and has suffered with anxiety and depression since her teens. After a massive dip in her mental health, Hayley, now 35, made a radical career change in January 2019 and now runs her own tattoo, piercing and art studio. Hayley tells us “I self harmed between the ages of 16 and 24. When you self harm, you don’t think about what it’s going to look like in the future, or how it will make you feel when you’re older. The scars are on my forearms and are quite obvious. I often feel paranoid that people stare, but I also like to look at them occasionally to remind
myself of where I was and how far I have come. I had my first scar cover up tattoo - an octopus - about a year ago and it really makes a huge difference. I now feel like people are looking at my tattoo rather than my scars. I thought, if I can help other people feel a little bit of relief and boost in confidence then that’s what I’m going to do!” Hayley will be tattooing the Mental Health Foundation green ribbon and semi colons, which is used as a message of solidarity against suicide, depression, addiction, and other mental health issues.

“Remember Remember the 5th of November, Gunpowder, treason and plot....” I love the sound of fireworks and the amazing colours that light up the sky at this time of year, but let's look at the history of all of this for a moment. The gunpowder plot saw a group of disaffected Roman Catholics conspire to assassinate the Protestant King James 1 by blowing up the House of Lords with matches, fuses and 36 barrels of gunpowder in 1605. The plan was foiled at the last minute – an event celebrated annually in Britain on 5 November. Sadly, battles have been fought on many occasions in the supposed promotion of faith by different religious groups. Christ the Servant King Hampton is your parish Church of England. Each Sunday we meet together at 10am to worship God: Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Christians of all denominations belong to the CSK church family: Anglicans. Roman Catholics, Baptists, Pentecostals, and others. This is what is written in
the book of Galatians in the Bible: “In Christ’s family there can be no division into Jew and non-Jew, slave and free, male and female. Among us you are all equal. That is, we are all in a common relationship with Jesus Christ.” (The Message translation) We sometimes begin our time together in CSK sharing these words: “Spirit of unity, reconciling God, We have come on journeys of our own, to a place where journeys meet.” We treat everyone equally at CSK: God loves us all. If you’ve never journeyed to CSK on a Sunday morning, why not consider joining in at Hampton’s Community Remembrance Service at 10:30am in Serpentine Green on Sunday the 10th November followed by refreshments in church with us after we have laid poppy wreaths at the Remembrance Garden. We regularly have the joy of meeting new people at CSK and we’d love to meet you too!
Hampton Parish Survey This survey highlighted some of the issues in Hampton and the Parish Council are looking at ways that these matters can be minimised Thank you to all those who took part in the Hampton Parish survey to determine what residents believe we should be focusing on; the full report is available on the Parish website wwwhamptonpc.org.uk Over the coming months the councillors will be discussing the precept and budget for next year which will include additional projects and possible expansions of the services that are already provided. Two issues that were highlighted frequently were the lack of youth facilities and community events and so the Parish Council would like Hampton residents to get involved and join us! The councillors would like to start two new committees; one dedicated to introducing a youth club to Hampton and one to plan community events in the parish, both of which would involve a commitment of a few hours a month and would, no doubt, be enjoyable as well as providing a valuable service to Hampton. If you would like to get involved in either (or both!) of these projects please contact the clerk at parishoffice@hamptonpc.co.uk

What is Income Protection? Income Protection may well be a policy you have never heard of however arguably the policy that could help most people in their time of illness Subject to medical qualification, Income Protection will pay out a monthly income should you be unable to work due to any injury or illness. Ask yourself, would you be able to cope without a monthly income? Income Protection is different to other policies as it doesn’t specify which illnesses or injuries it will pay out for – you only need to be unable to work due to an illness or injury . The policy is tailored to your circumstances and links into your employers sick pay where applicable so your policy payments would start after your employers sick pay ends.
You can choose to have a monthly pay out to protect just your monthly mortgage payment, or to protect your committed and lifestyle expenditure. With income protection you are only able to access this policy with an advice and recommendation service as the policy is complex and there are different elements to the policy that you must consider, this is why you need an experts opinion – and this is where we come in. The policy can pay out until you get better and return to work, you die, or until the policy stops at the end of the policy term. Talk to us today about a solution to protect you, your family and your home.

home and garden
Heaven Scent: Home Fragrance By Sarah Davey
What’s the first thing a guest notices when they walk into your home? Your antique coat stand? The ornate mirror? The pristine hardwood flooring? No, it’s actually the smell. Smell is our most powerful sense and will override the other four senses if something foul wafts our way. So, if your house smells like musty wet dog, stinky shoes, or last night’s fish supper, none of the other details will matter. How your home smells leaves an impression on visitors so it’s nice to make that impression a good one, and of course it’s nicer for you too; after all you live there! There’s a whole industry devoted to home fragrance, so you have lots of choice. But the secret to a nose-friendly atmosphere isn’t synthetic scents. Aside from being overly perfumed, they often contain chemicals that can irritate some sensitive people, particularly asthma and migraine sufferers. Let the outside in, the simplest most effective way to freshen up your home is to open doors and windows yet very few of us do it on a daily basis. Stale air is a health hazard and a mood zapper. I’m
not suggesting that you leave the windows open all day in November, but just five minutes will give you an instant, and totally free, air refresh. Grow an indoor herb garden, fresh herbs such as basil and mint give off a lovely aroma in the kitchen. If you’re feeling ambitious try planting a herb box overflowing with marjoram, lemon balm and rosemary. Sweep your hand across them to agitate the foliage and spread the fragrance around the room. Chop up a few lemons and limes, for a quick and easy fresh smell, you can’t beat citrus. Slice a few lemons, limes and oranges into thin wheels and bake them at a very low temperature for several hours until they are dry to the touch. You can pretty much forget about them while they are in the oven except for the fact your house will smell incredible. When they are done you can make potpourri. Thread some on a string with a cinnamon stick and some star anise and hang in your kitchen or pop them in a pretty glass bowl.
Bonus tips Make citrus salt Grind the citrus wheels to a powder in a spice grinder and mix with flaked sea salt. Make citrus sugar Same as above but mix with sugar. Make sweets Dip them in dark chocolate and sprinkle with flaky sea salt. Buy quality scented candles Organic beeswax scented candles are very different to synthetic chemically fragranced varieties. Try them and you won’t look back. If you are wondering which scents to try, fresh citrus scents have universal appeal; incense and patchouli are lovely at this time of year. Vanilla has long been named as the most popular choice among air-freshener companies and in candle form it takes on an even warmer, more mellow quality. Make your own air freshener For a quick-fix, all-natural air freshener, fill a pan with water, add fresh rosemary or lavender and bring to the boil, then simmer for an hour and let the vapours drift around the house, scenting the air. Later, you can let the mixture cool and decant the liquid into a spray bottle. Store in the fridge and spritz a little as needed.

Chimes Coffee Shop
cook wise
cookwise Come in for a warm welcome! Chimes, CSK’s coffee shop, has just celebrated its fourth birthday and is going from strength to strength Chimes is situated in the modern CSK church building in Silver Hill, just opposite the Serpentine Green rotunda. CSK owns and supports Chimes, which is run on a not-forprofit basis for the benefit of the local Hampton community. Chimes serves fabulous, highquality, home baked cakes, light lunches and a broad range of barista and other fairly traded drinks. The new Autumn and Winter Menu includes freshly made soups to warm you up on chilly days. If you’ve not already been to Chimes, you’ve been missing a real treat! Chimes has become a popular place for young and old, for families and for people wanting to relax or simply have a chat with friends. It has many special features, including a large safe crèche area for young children. Lots of people who come
into CSK to attend the wide range of activities that the church, and other organisations, run call into Chimes and are always welcome. Recently launched activities, which are open to all in the community, include a regular ‘Board Games’ afternoon on Mondays between 1.30 – 3pm, which is a chance to make new friends over coffee, games and a puzzle or two, and ‘Table Talk for Blokes’ on a Wednesday between 10.30am and 12.00pm, which is a time for men to meet and chat. Tony Sleight, Chimes Coffee Shop Manager said: “If you’ve already been to Chimes, please tell your friends about us” said Tony, “and follow us on Facebook. If you’ve not yet visited us, we’d love to see you. Come and try our new menu and enjoy freshly prepared food and drinks.”
Celebrate at Chimes "all I can say is WOW... the food was amazing" Chimes loves celebrating with people. It has special packages available for people who want to celebrate anniversaries, birthdays and other special events such as baby showers and Christmas parties. Due to a recent generous donation of special crockery, cups and cake stands, Chimes is now, by arrangement, able to cater for larger groups. Chimes was thrilled when the following post was recently put on Facebook: ‘Highly recommend Chimes, we've had a private function for Afternoon Tea, all I can say is WOW...the food was amazing, lots of tasty scones, sandwiches, fruit, cakes ample tea and coffee. A massive ‘Thank You’ to Julia and Jayne for preparing and organising. You're both a credit to Chimes’. Using Fireworks and Bonfires Safely By Eileen Le Voi, Safe Local Trades & Service
www.safelocaltrades.com
Don’t let cold callers give you the chills as winter sets in Winter is knocking at the door – and as the elements take a toll on your home – so do the rogue traders At this time of year, we can expect gusty winds and heavy rain to play havoc with our home and garden when it comes to guttering, roof tiles, fences and even trees. Then there’s the frozen pipes and radiators that won’t work after spending the summer months idle, to name a couple of household niggles. The effects of the elements, if and when they do their damage, are like magnets to the cowboy traders whose aim is to make even more winter misery while lining their own pockets. Our advice is to never accept an offer of work from cold callers who ‘happen to be in your area’. They will ask for cash up front, and more often than not, it will be for work which is unnecessary. Don’t be fooled by business cards with websites and telephone numbers which look genuine. Politely take the card – if you begin to feel vulnerable or intimidated - and say you will contact them at your convenience should you need their services. You can then check their contact details, or ask a family member of friend to do so on your behalf. So, for all those winter maintenance jobs that still need planning in before the festive season, www.safelocaltrades.com should be your first port of call. We have a range of professional, recommended and reliable trades from chimney sweeps, boiler maintenance, electricians, roofing specialists, plumbers, tree surgeons – and just about anyone who can provide a service for your seasonal maintenance needs. However, there are some simple but effective ways you take steps to winter proof your home and garden,
and avoid a November nightmare or December disaster: Circle

Check all external pipes for breaks, leaks, and blockages. Blocked or leaking pipes can freeze during the cold months, then expand and burst – causing potentially expensive water damage. Think about insulation. A properly insulated property is an absolute must. Make sure that you check the basics, starting with obvious draft points. Invest in some draft excluder to keep doors and windows secure. Check the cladding around your boiler and pipes, and make sure that taps and faucets don’t leak. Bleed your radiators. A great way to warm up your property is to bleed the radiators. This releases any trapped air, allowing hot water to fill every part of your radiator and warm the property more efficiently. Get a boiler service. Arrange for a professional to service your boiler each year. As everyone starts to switch on or boost their central heating, the surge in gas consumption can lead to a big increase in boiler breakdowns. Clear out your gutters. In autumn, leaves can collect in gutters and drains, leading to blocks and overflows - so it’s best to clean them regularly. Consider investing in gutter leaf guards to help prevent your gutters becoming blocked in future. Sweep your chimney. If your chimneys are in use, make sure that they get swept every year. This will remove the build-up of dirt and grime from your chimney walls.
Fireworks and bonfire night can be plenty of fun for all of the family to enjoy and going to an organised firework display instead of holding one at home can be a great way of supporting your local community If you do plan on using fireworks or lighting a bonfire at your own home however, please ensure you consider our safety advice below:
Fireworks
Only buy fireworks marked BS 7114 Light fireworks at arm’s length using a taper, stand well back and never go back to a lit firework Circle Never throw fireworks or put them in your pockets or clothing Circle Light sparklers one at a time wearing gloves, and place used sparklers in a bucket of water Circle Never give sparklers to children under five Circle It is illegal to sell fireworks to someone under the age of 18 or to light fireworks in a public place Circle Circle
For more information on Firework Safety, visit: www.hse.gov.uk
Bonfires
Do not light bonfires in unsuitable weather conditions, particularly when windy Circle Do not leave bonfires unattended Circle Keep a bucket of water or a hosepipe handy just in case Circle Build bonfires well clear of buildings, garden sheds, fences and hedges Circle Never use flammable liquids to start the fire Circle Never burn dangerous rubbish such as aerosols, paint, foam furniture, rubber tyres, batteries, etc Circle Before you light the bonfire, check that children and animals are not hiding inside and are a safe distance away Circle Always consider the location of a bonfire or firework display, smoke drifting near or on to roads can have devastating consequences. Choosing mediation as a way of resolving disputes between separating couples is now widely used in preference to going straight to a solicitor Not only can it work out to be less expensive, it can also prove to be less confrontational, as no matter how conciliatory the approach of your solicitor may be, the mere receipt of a solicitors’ letter can be taken as antagonistic. Mediation is particularly suitable for children issues as it provides a forum for the parents to discuss the wishes and feelings of the children, as well chewing over the logistics of a shared care or contact routine. It may not be widely known, but children of ten years and older can participate in mediation sessions between the parents. There needs to be a consensus by the parents as well as the child to take part. Even younger siblings can come to
meetings to express their wishes and feelings, in the company of an older child. The mediator who oversees this child-inclusive process, has to be specifically qualified. There are several types of mediator, those you can engage from your local Family Mediation Service, solicitor mediators who operate within solicitors’ family law departments, and independent family mediators. If you feel that child inclusive mediation could help your situation, when selecting a mediator, ensure they are suitably qualified. Family law specialist solicitors will also assist you in the right choice of process for your particular situation.

Off-Payroll (IR35) Rules Go Private From April 2020 In October’s Budget, the Chancellor confirmed that from April 2020 the Government will extend to the private sector the same changes to the off-payroll rules which were introduced for the public sector from April 2017 The new rules will affect businesses in the private sector which engage individuals who work through their own company – often called a personal service company or PSC. From April 2020, the responsibility for determining the tax status of such an individual will shift from the individual’s PSC to the engager. The rules will only apply to engagers who are medium or large – small businesses will be exempt from the changes. The precise definition of small has yet to be determined, but the Government says that they intend to use a definition similar to that in the Companies Act 2006. Under that Act, a company is defined as small if it meets two out of three of the following criteria: Circle Turnover does not exceed £10.2 million Circle Balance sheet total does not exceed £5.1 million Circle Not more than 50 employees.
This definition will need extending so that it applies to
engagers who are not set up as a limited company, such as a sole trader. The crucial point to appreciate is that the size test applies to the engager - the business taking on the worker - and not the worker’s PSC. The Government expects that 95% of businesses will meet the definition of small and not have to apply the new measures. Where the engager is within the definition of small, the responsibility for determining the worker’s tax status under the off-payroll rules will remain with the worker and their PSC. Many workers may be nervous that if the engager determines that they should be subject to PAYE from April 2020, this could prompt HMRC to look back at the tax treatment that the worker and their PSC have adopted in previous years. We understand HMRC will not be focusing on historical cases or carrying out targeted campaigns as a result of a worker becoming subject to employment taxes for the first time from April 2020.

No dog owner wants to think about putting their dog to sleep, but it’s a decision that you may find yourself faced with at the end of your dog’s life By Tracey Anderson Although its heart-breaking, sometimes the kindest option for your pet is to let them go. It’s never easy to agree to put your dog down but doing your research before the day arrives may help you to come to terms with the decision. If your dog’s quality of life is suffering with no sign of getting better you are faced with a difficult choice; on the one hand you want to spend as long as possible with them but, on the other hand, you want to make the best decision for them. Usually you will have at least a few days to think things through. A good vet will be happy to discuss the process with you. They will also have a good insight into how your dog’s health issues will affect their quality of life. They will help you consider things like mobility, appetite, breathing, comfort, happiness and response to treatment, but ultimately the final decision to put your dog to sleep will be yours. Your dog is probably an important and much-loved member of your family so the decision will be hard for everyone, especially children. If you can, discuss the situation with them honestly. They will be

upset but try to focus the discussion on what is best for your dog. Reassure them that the reason the procedure is called ‘putting a dog to sleep’ is because it is a very peaceful procedure and will help their beloved pet pass away with as little pain and distress as possible. The vet administers a measured overdose of a drug, similar to an anaesthetic, which will put your dog into a deep and permanent ‘sleep.’ If you want to, you can stroke or cuddle your dog as they drift off. Afterwards you have a number of choices. You can take your dog home and bury them in your garden. Bear in mind that some councils place restrictions on home burials, and you will not be permitted to do this on public ground or if you are in rented accommodation. You may arrange for your dog to be buried or cremated at a pet cemetery or you can ask the vet to arrange a cremation. In the days and weeks after loss of your dog, try to focus on the good times you had together, and take comfort in the fact that the final decision you made for your pet was the best one for them.

Folksworth Pre-School As we head into November and waiting for the cold starts to set in ready for the winter months, the children have been creating colourful displays of bangs, fizzes and many cozy bonfires
Folksworth Primary Books Open Doors to a Whole New World It is fantastic to see how enthusiastically the children have launched into our new book-based curriculum this year Inspired by the Dr Seuss quote ‘The more you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you’ll go’, each class has their own text to study this term, with an exciting array of activities and trips to support their learning. Reception have been looking at ‘Funny Bones’, which has already brought a medical professional in to teach them about applying bandages with some very ‘funny’ results. Maple class are basing their work around ‘Paddington’, and using his adventures to discover lots about the sites and history of London, ahead of their trip there later this month. Oak class are using ‘Charlie and the Chocolate Factory’ to learn about concepts like melting points, and since visiting the Roald Dahl museum, they have started writing biographies of his life. Meanwhile, Elm class are going above and beyond…literally…as their text ‘Cosmic’ has taken them on a voyage of discovery among the planets, including a trip to the Space Centre in Leicester. Who says children don’t like reading these days?
The children have been telling many stories about their evenings out watching the spectacular displays. During the falling leaf season we have enjoyed lots of Autumn walks collecting what nature has to offer us at this time of year, ranging from big spiky conkers to sweet little blackberries. As we head into November we will be talking with the children about Remembrance Day and the importance of our history and heritage and what makes our little island great. We only have a few spaces available for the Easter term so if you wish to view the preschool please contact us to organise a visit.
Little Acorns We have enjoyed having our mummies, daddies, grandmas and grandads join us for a stay and play session The children showed them around and took part in activities. We have also been celebrating Halloween by playing with pumpkins and having Halloween party games and dancing. With Christmas approaching fast the preschool are preparing for their Christmas concert, learning lots of songs to impress their families and friends. We have limited spaces left to start with us this school year; we are now booking places for September 2020. Hampton College This term so far has been packed full of achievements, events, sporting activities and many other extracurricular activities The recent Year 6 Open Evening was extremely well attended by parents and prospective Year 6 students. The evening was a fantastic showcase of all the facilities that Hampton College can offer and we look forward to welcoming all our new Year 7 students back in September. Several students have received Head’s Commendations, celebrating their many achievements, both inside and out of school. Students have been engaged in many varied activities, including Solstice Got Talent, publication of articles in Psychology magazine, work shadowing, raising money for Macmillan in the Hampton Fun Run, being polite and helpful to staff, as well as producing excellent school work in their own time. Three of last year’s GCSE students, Eloise, Summer and Fatima, received awards at the Muslim Council of Peterborough recently for their outstanding exam results. Tionne in Year 13 also nominated by Mr Gilligan for the community award after being impressed and proud at the way she handled a difficult situation that unfolded on her way home school and showing calmness, maturity and care to a person in need. Several of our trips for Enrichment Week have also gone live, with trips being offered to Disneyland Paris, Birmingham, a Bushcraft Survival Experience with an activity involving a crashed plane, campfire cooking, Camps Got Talent and axe throwing! Students will once again be offered the opportunity to go on a very popular trip to Birmingham and we have offered Year 8 students the opportunity to have four fun-filled days at Disneyland Paris. Our Sixth Form Geography students recently visited London Docklands, where they went to the Olympic Park, shopped at the Westfield Centre. We have also run a series of very successful events to raise money for Macmillan. Both staff and Sixth Formers ran a Coffee Morning and students participated in the Macmillan Fun Run around Hampton. As a school, we raised £1,149.70 for this very worthwhile cause. A reminder that we have our Winter Arts Concert on 19th November. Tickets for this event will be available from the College shortly.

Mini Movers It has been great to continue welcoming new people to Mini Movers over the last few weeks and if you haven’t been to us then why not come along? Mini Movers is a drop in, stay and play session for Parents, Grandparents or carers with children from Newborn to Reception age. It’s a great place to meet other adults and for children to mix and play. We meet at 1.15pm till 2.45pm Monday (term time only) at the Hampton Vale Community Centre. It’s just £1 per family which includes refreshments for the children and adults. We’ve had some great craft ideas over the last few sessions from Lisa and Hannah, with more planned for future sessions so get yourself and your child over to the craft table during a session. We’ve also enjoyed some fantastic singing led by Julie and it’s great to see all the adults and children joining in too. The sessions are run by volunteers from KingsGate Community Church. Don’t worry about the cold weather, our hall is nice and warm and we have space to park pushchairs inside as well. Contact Rachael 07983 421139 for more information. Search for Hampton Mini Movers on Facebook or just pop along on a Monday, we’d love to see you.

Hampton Vale Primary There is something exciting happening at Hampton Vale Primary Academy! The Academy, located on Westlake Avenue in Hampton, has just launched its brand new Digital Media Suite which has been created by Peterborough based artists Street Arts Hire. The suite has been designed in line with the Academy's new curriculum which travels around the world, out into space and down into our ocean’s. The specially designed floor is a beautiful ocean setting featuring a range of sea creatures and looking up to the ceiling is a clear starry night sky. The immersive space is the start of many new learning environments within the school. Every child will have a weekly
26 26
digital media lesson in the suite, developing their understanding of a variety of technological platforms, computer programming as well as lessons on keeping themselves safe in an online world. The Acting Headteacher of the Academy, Miss Paula Page said “We are at the beginning of a very exciting journey to create an engaging learning environment and curriculum for our children. The feedback on our approach has been extremely positive and we are excited to implement our future plans. Our school joined the Four C's Multi Academy Trust in January this year and we have achieved so much in a relatively short space of time.”

nature watch
naturewatch Fresh October brings the pheasant, Then to gather nuts is pleasant. Sara Coleridge (1802 – 1852)
Lakota (Lover of Nature)
Pecking along the grass verge in Nature's Way was a brightly coloured male pheasant: a mixture of blacks, blues, browns, greens, reds, whites and even a hint of purple It looked unbothered by the passing traffic and very much at home. But in fact Britain is not a pheasant’s natural home; although these birds have been here for a very long time: certainly well established by the fifteenth century, when they provided many a rich meal for the more wealthy and the occasional poacher! It is thought that the Normans first brought them to this country. Pheasants build their nests on the ground but actually roost on the branches of trees at night. They feed on various grains, leaves, insects, worms, wild fruits and nuts. The males have a loud, sharp croaking call that can be heard over a long distance. They are
quite large birds measuring nearly a metre in length and weighing about one-and-a-half kilograms. Their lifespan is quite short though being between one and two years. The male often mates with several females but then leaves her to raise the brood herself. Female pheasants do not possess the bright plumage of the male but have an overall brownness. They can lay between two and twenty two eggs but the largest clutches are usually the result of two pheasants sharing the same nest. Once hatched the chicks can feed themselves straight away and are able to fly when only
twelve days old. The adults only fly short distances due a great deal of energy that is needed for flight. In many parts of the country pheasants are bred as game birds for the shooting season. It is estimated that this could be in excess of twenty million birds each year. Pheasant shooting has, though, encouraged the planting of many woods to provide places of refuge for these birds. ‘Danny Champion of the World’ by Roald Dahl features
pheasants, with Danny’s father being an established poacher. The main part of the story centres around Danny and his father devising a plan to capture all the pheasants in the wood that have been reared for shooting. It’s worth reading if you don’t know it.
No Tidy November November is the last official month of autumn and the first post changing the clocks
Mindful of Wildlife Many who crave peace find it through nature Mention peace today and you may hear the terms ASMR and mindfulness: ASMR stands for “autonomous sensory meridian response” and describes a pleasant tingling sensation moving from the scalp and down the spine, triggered by various repetitive stimuli, such as whispering, rustling poplar leaves or reeds swaying in a breeze or the immersive quality of bird song. These trigger a physical response, a tingling, which in turn stimulates psychological responses ranging from relaxation to sleepiness - many of us
will have felt ASMR in nature and the quiet enjoyment that nature reserves promote is the perfect way to seek it out. Mindfulness is a relaxed focusing of attention on the present, sharpened by meditative exercises or by being alert to details in the environment an antidote to 21st century data overload. Seeing wildlife and nature reserves in a mindful way can be soothing, and mentally beneficial, helping put the wider world into a less jumbled and aggressive perspective.
This means for those working it is often dark when leaving for and returning from work, the time for working the garden is greatly reduced. As temperatures drop and daylight hours fall the growth of grass, plants and unwanted plants (weeds) slows or even stops leaving few jobs to do. This lull in activity makes it all the more tempting to rush into a frenzy of leaf raking and plant pruning to create the neat tidiness that spring and summer often prevent. To do this though is not good for the wildlife creating an increased risk of exposure to deathly cold temperatures. A very real proposition for hibernating amphibians, hedgehogs, queen bumblebees and many more
besides. Resist the tidying temptation instead use the respite to relax and plan ahead for 2020. Repair fences or buildings and clean down greenhouse glass by all means but let the land and nature relax tidying can wait until planting begins and any detritus may in the time rot down releasing nutrients to the soil for free. Decide on any major changes or redesigns for the New Year, order in seeds to plant in 2020, vegetables, herbs or flowers. Clean up the tools but not the land, budget for any new ideas such as seating areas, ponds or statues but let nature rest in peace for a bountiful spring.
