Every evening flying over our house there could be a noisy cacophony of geese, or as there was the other evening, a graceful sweep of seagulls.
A
rriving in intermittent bursts of groups and single birds they were flying northwards towards their roosts for the night. Their plaintiff cry, so distinctive of the Herring Gull, was seemingly bringing echoes of summer; of summer days spent by the sea, as autumn settles. One of the larger species of gull, the Herring Gull, can be seen in fairly large numbers in or over the Hampton lakes. They are probably the most well known of seagulls and the ones we remember from our seaside holidays due to their easily recognisable cry. In the summer the adult birds have a pale grey back and wings, with the head, neck and breast being
white. The wings have black tips and white spots. The young birds are completely different being a mottled brown. Most herring gulls nest on rock cliffs and offshore islands, only 1% nest inland. After their young have flown some do, however, move inland to feed on lake islands and landfill sites. Some remain there for the winter. The herring gull is both a predator and a scavenger feeding on fish, crabs, eggs, mussels, worms and even young birds. Their numbers have shown a sharp decline over recent years with the reason not being completely clear. Some believe it could be due to disease, others
that food from waste tips has become less due to a change in methods used. I suppose our ‘Hungry Harrys’ mean less food waste going into these landfill sites. Some say that the herring gull population has declined by half in the last 25 years with the same being true for North America. One herring gull in America was recorded as having lived for 29 years but some have apparently lived for as long as 49 years. In the wonderful book ‘ Jonathan Livingstone Seagull’ the author, Richard Bach, writes a fable about a seagull learning about life and flight. There are some inspiring messages in the book for both seagulls and humans!
Gift Of The Seagull by Munda
A lonely seagull flies the winds Majestic... soaring...gliding wings A single screech sounds from the sky Come fly with me... come here and fly My spirit floats to be a part I feel the beating of its heart My soul, one with this bird of sea Now knows the meaning to fly free I feel the winds caress my soul And soar the streams without a goal My being trembles of delight A treasure I received tonight The seagull's flight of soaring high The gift of what it means to fly

Have you thought of joining the Parish Council? • Do you have two or three evenings a month to spare? • Want to improve local facilities and really make a difference to life in Hampton Hargate and Hampton Vale?
YES? Then are you: 1. a British citizen, or a citizen of the Commonwealth or the European Union, and 2. 18 years or older on the day you become nominated for election? For the whole of the 12 months prior to nomination, have you: 3. been an elector of the parish and either occupied or owned/rented premises in the parish, or 4. resided within 3 miles of the boundary of the parish, or had your principal or only place of work in that area? If so, you may be interested to know that we currently have three vacancies on the Parish Council following the 5 May Elections when eleven councillors were elected without a poll.
6 October 2016 at the Tesco Community Meeting Room at Serpentine Green where they will be interviewed and asked to give a short presentation on a local issue:
Notices of the vacancy have been posted on the Parish Notice Boards and details of this vacancy and the appointment process are available on the Parish Council website - all we need now are some residents who are interested in joining the Council.
What steps do the Parish Council take to deal with litter in Hampton and what alternatives/additional measures would you propose if you were co-opted on to the Parish Council?
All qualifying applicants (you cannot stand for election if you are the subject of a bankruptcy restriction order or interim order, have, within five years before the day of the election, been convicted in the United Kingdom of any offence and have had a prison sentence whether suspended or not for a period of over three months without the option of a fine or if you work for the council you want to become a councillor for) are invited to attend the Parish Meeting commencing at 7.00pm on Thursday
6
The Councillors present will then vote on their selection and will appoint their new Councillors from those who have attended and given a presentation. The successful applicant is then required to complete an Acceptance of Office and a Declaration of Interests form before taking their seat on the Council (both of these forms are lodged with the City Council Electoral Officer by the Clerk within 28 days of appointment). These records are on the City and Parish Council websites and are open to public inspection.
If you would like to register your interest please contact: The Parish Clerk, Kate Day or Deputy Clerk, Gemma Cade by telephone - 07391 497 561 during office hours (9am-1pm Mon-Thu) or e-mail clerk@hamptonpc.org.uk Hampton Gazette | October 2016 | E: info@hamptongazette.co.uk | www.hamptongazette.co.uk

I am Jon Phillipson Brown, one 14 Councillors who serve on Hampton Parish Council.
Holiday clubs, other classes and venues available Please see our website for details.
Jon Phillipson Brown I have lived in Hampton for a little over two years, having moved here from Spain in 2014 with my wife and our two children. I became a parish councillor in May 2016 because I want to support and serve my local community and at the same time set an example for my children. There is also a sense of continuity for me as I am following in my father’s footsteps. My dad was a councillor, in his case a town councillor, in Grimsby where I grew up. I believe in the power and the value of ordinary people getting together, getting involved and making sensible decisions. I’d like to encourage local, small businesses to open
shops that we can walk to and feel it would be great if we had an independent greengrocer, butchers etc., in Hampton. Professionally, I have recently started a new job working for Cambridge International Examinations, working in the operations division as a Task Team Leader. In the past I have worked as an exam invigilator at Hampton College and, before that, spent around 15 years teaching people from all over the world to speak English. In my spare time I am a practicing artist and currently have an exhibition of my paintings on display at The Ostrich Inn in North Street. I also enjoy singing and I perform with Peterborough Male Voice Choir.
Hampton Seniors The summer has gone by so quickly, we have had some beautiful days over the last couple of months and seen some amazing sunsets. The Seniors have celebrated quite a few birthdays over the summer, and have welcomed a few new people to the group, now we are in October and thinking of Halloween.

As the nights pull in – make sure your elderly neighbours aren’t left in the dark
by Eileen Le Voi
At this point in the year, we start to think about the dawn of a new season – autumn. Along with its rich colours, crisp walks and atmospheric sunlight also comes darker nights, colder weather and later this month – Halloween, heralding trick or treaters.
A
s the nights start to gradually pull in, and with the clocks going back at the end of October, now is the idea time to get into the habit of keeping an eye on an older friend or neighbour. The winter months can be lonely and isolating for those who are less mobile; a knock at the door after dark can be frightening and cold callers on the phone can leave the recipient feeling vulnerable.
The situation isn’t helped by the many rogue traders who try to tout for work in the local area, often suggesting to the home owner that a roof or gutting are in need of repair before winter sets in. This can lead to vulnerable people parting with their cash, and getting nothing but shoddy work and a huge dent in their savings in return. Then there are phone scams, which may on the surface seem to be less intrusive, but are equally as dangerous. These can range from callers claiming to be from companies to check non- existent faults on your computer, banks claiming to check your account details and even socalled medical companies suggesting the need for mobile aid from electric chairs to stair lifts.
With winter on the way, maybe now is a good time to join a Neighbourhood Watch Scheme within your community. Safe Local Trades, covering the PE Postcode area, has worked with many local Neighbourhood Watch groups over the years – including those in Yaxley and Cardea - providing numerous lamp-post signs as well as giving free talks on the dangers of doorstep callers and other scams. It has been proven that areas which operate a Neighbourhood Watch Scheme are less likely to be targeted by crime, rogue traders and distraction burglars. Don’t be fooled by rogue or cowboy traders making an offer that seems too good to be true – as it most probably is.
Share these tips with family and friends, and older relatives: Be careful what you say about yourself on social media Set your privacy settings Keep your media profiles, such as Facebook and LinkedIn to a minimum (your name) and don’t post your address or date of birth Be very cautious about giving out personal information to people you don’t know – age, address, phone number etc In public places make sure nobody can hear your conversations or look over your shoulder when banking, shopping or making other confidential online transactions.
If you live or know anyone in the PE Postcode area who would like to inquire about obtaining free Neighbourhood Watch lamp-post signs, please email eileen@safelocaltrades.com or for advice visit http://www.safelocaltrades.com/consumers/advice/your-neighbourhood-neighbourhoodwatch Safe Local Trades can recommend trusted and reliable tradespeople across a wide range of areas – all of which come with a customer seal of approval. Go to www.safelocaltrades.com or telephone 01733 530019.

wine
can actually be good for you!
We all like a glass of wine or two but did you know that there are benefits of drinking your favourite glass of wine, whether it be rosé, white or red.
• Drinking, in moderation of course, really can do you some good! It can help with your memory and even fight against an illness. Have yourself a glass at the ready and find out why wine is good for you. • Drinking wine (in moderation) reduces the risk of cardiovascular disease and heart attacks! This is because it dilates your arteries and increases your blood flow which therefore lowers the risk of blood clots. • For all you red wine lovers out there, red wine slows down growth of breast cancer cells whilst also being a great source of antioxidants, meaning it increases levels of good
cholesterol and gets rid of the bad stuff. • Having a glass of wine before bed can help you lose weight. According to scientists wine before bed helps you beat your late night food cravings which is one of the hardest things to do when trying to lose weight. Wine also has something called resveratrol in it, which stops fat cells gaining more fat. • It can reduce stress. It help calm neurotransmitters that control stress therefore helping you to relax. • It can help get rid of spots. Resveratrol in wine can stop acne bacteria coming through even more so than some creams.

They also take longer to digest than carbohydrates, helping you feel fuller for longer and on fewer calories – a plus for anyone trying to lose weight. You don't need to eat meat or cheese to get enough protein. Here are five good vegetarian and vegan sources that you can easily add to your diet.
Quinoa A fantastic source of protein, magnesium, antioxidants, and fiber. Contains 8 grams per cup. Green peas One cup contains 7.9 grams – about the same as a cup of milk. Beans There are many different varieties of beans – but one thing they all have in common is their high amounts of protein. Chia seeds Chia has 5 grams of protein per 2 tablespoons and is also a complete protein source. Chickpeas A half cup of chickpeas will give you a nice dose of around 6-8 grams of protein.

WHAT’S ON Classical guitar soloist Amanda Cook
16 October
Music that spans the world City of Peterborough Symphony Orchestra is proud to start its 26th season, joining the Latin to the great classical tradition in a wonderful journey on Sunday, 16 October, 3pm-5pm. It spans the world from Brazil (how appropriate in this Olympic year) to Austria via sunny Spain with the inspiring maestro, Steve Bingham, and in the company of the brilliant prizewinning virtuoso guest guitarist, Amanda Cook. The programme begins with Heltor Villa-Lobus’ Sinfonietta No 1 in as an affectionate tribute to admired composer Mozart, mixing a classical clarity with the quirkiness that you would expect from this famous Brazilian composer. Onwards to the gardens of the Palacio Real de Aranguez, south of Madrid, for the unforgettable
and immensely popular Guitar Concerto by Joaquim Rodrigo. The blind composer, Rodrigo, said this described the “fragrance of magnolias, the singing of birds, and the gushing of fountains”. Amanda Cook will be bringing this much-loved concerto to a brilliant and sunny life. She has been dubbed the “guitar queen with a silken touch” by The Independent. Finally, the orchestra embraces Schubert’s mighty Symphony No 9. Known as “The Great C Major Symphony” this is truly one of the greatest symphonies ever written.
Tickets are £12.50 and £10.50 (concessions), children under 16 free.

P
eople from across the city will sleep rough for one night to highlight the plight of the homeless and raise money for the charity. The Peterborough based award-winning charity now has 39 homes across the country which offer longer term accommodation to 130 people. “This is a great chance for people to come together and experience for one night what over 3,500 people in England have to do every night. We are not pretending that one night sleeping rough is anything like what homeless

people have to face. Homelessness is more than not having a roof, it is an isolating and destructive experience and homeless people are some of the most vulnerable and socially excluded in our society.” Ed Walker, founder of Hope into Action. “Come and join us! Help raise awareness of the growing homeless problem and much needed funds so we can support those without a home. Bring your sleeping bag, warm clothes and plenty of cardboard to sleep on.” Emma Timson, organiser of the event.

Hargate Primary
Hampton Vale Primary A new school year has brought with it not only scores of new and exciting learning opportunities, but also new staff and projects, and a new building. The brand new £200,000 Studio Suite includes a music room, which contains a music practice room and an electronic composition suite, as well as a drum kit and brass, string and wind instrument; a community room, which has soft play facilities and a kitchen for coffee mornings; and a dance and gym studio, complete with ballet bar. Headteacher Mrs Anne Neary said: “The new suite is an undoubted asset to the school. We look forward to welcoming the community groups that are letting out this reasonably priced facility in the evenings and the new parents of Hampton to our coffee mornings for 0-2 year olds.”
The school is also delighted to have welcomed three new teachers and to have three of its former teaching assistants undertaking their teacher training within school with the TeachEast Project. Learning events have included Roald Dahl Day, which marked the 100th anniversary of the birth of the children’s author, saw lots of Willy Wonkas, Matildas and Mr Foxes, for example, around school as the children dressed as their favourite Dahl character. Meanwhile, the new reception children have adopted “favourites” as their theme, as they focus on their favourite colours, teddies and stories from home. They have also had the chance to share with others more about themselves, and – like the rest of the children in the school – to explore their thoughts about the school’s values and its learning tools.
The Autumn term is well and truly underway at Hampton Hargate and we have already had lots of different and exciting things happening. The children thoroughly enjoyed an interactive singing assembly at the beginning of term and we are hoping this will inspire some budding young vocalists! Our Roald Dahl day was also a huge success with lots of amazing costumes to see - who knew how many fantastic "Fantastic Mr Fox" fans we had - not to mention the Twits!! We still have lots to look forward to and will of course be ending the term with our customary annual Friends Christmas Fair and our fabulous Christmas performances which
are always a great showcase of the children’s talents! We are really pleased to say that the new reception children have settled in quickly and have been enjoying their first experiences of school. They have been learning all about life at school and meeting new friends. Mrs Wilkinson, our Reception Team Leader said “I am really pleased with how the children have settled into school life and I am looking forward to busy and exciting first term with them.” We also have the following meeting dates for the Reception – September 2017 intake:
• Monday 14 November - 9.15am for Reception Intake Sept 2017 • Thursday 29 November - 6pm for Reception Intake Sept 2017 Please contact the school office to book a place. 01733 296780

Living in Hampton
In association with
The development of the next coffee shop, pub and retirement complex being built between Aldi and the new junction onto the A15 near Vivacity Premiere Gym is expected to be granted planning permission shortly. Contractors have already been on site to gear up for their works.
New pub and drive through coffee shop coming to Hampton
M
cCarthy & Stone delivers high quality retirement complexes across the country. Each development is individual and designed to reflect their individual location and the specific needs of the local community. Of the 45 apartments that will be provided within the McCarthy & Stone retirement development on Hampton Avenue, there will be 24 one bedroomed apartments and 21 two bedroomed apartments. There will also be the inclusion of a communal lounge, a buggy store and an office for the estate manager. There is also a guest
suite provided on the third floor to accommodate family, friends and visitors on a first come first served basis. Greene King is planning to build a Farmhouse Inn next door. Farmhouse Inns is a restaurant-led brand (there are no dedicated drinking areas, sport or loud music) with an emphasis on Great British Food. The building will provide relaxed dining areas, a bar and more formal restaurant area. There will also be provision of a safe area for children to play in. The new Costa will be a drive thru coffee shop, providing hot and cold drinks and snacks to eat in
or take away. The coffee shop will provide the same range of drinks and snacks to both people walking to the restaurant as those who use the drive thru. The new junction off Hampton Avenue is progressing well and O&H Hampton is aiming to have it open before the end of this year. Roger Tallowin explains that O&H has arranged for as much work as possible to be done without disturbance to the existing A15 carriageway, but eventually traffic lights will be needed to install the new ‘toucan’ style crossing which is an addition to the two existing ones at Clayburn
way. A toucan crossing is a type of pedestrian crossing that also allows bicycles to be ridden across, and gets its name because ‘two can’ cross together, both pedestrians and cyclists. The new layout will enable safer crossing of the A15 by pedestrians and cyclists heading between the two secondary schools or from the new Hampton Gardens village to the centre. The City Council’s contractors working on the new Hampton Gardens secondary school have also been progressing well with the deep drainage which they are bringing across the A15.

LEGAL ADVICE
Are you sick of The Archers? Anyone who has been following the Radio 4 soap The Archers may by now have had enough of the emotional rollercoaster plotline involving the domestic violence victim Helen Titchener and her trials and tribulations at the hands of her abusive husband Rob. At last Helen is out of jail following her Crown Court acquittal at the weekend for attempted murder and she now only has the children proceedings to endure in order to reunite her family. Let’s hope the legal realism of this final court case will be somewhat more convincing than the frustrating (for real lawyers) misrepresentations in the criminal proceedings. There has been a serious point made as a result of this storyline however, namely that “coercive control” of one partner over another within a relationship, is a genuine and widespread problem that only in recent times has come to public awareness.
The emotional and psychological abuse of a partner through threats and restrictions can be more damaging than physical violence. It is very hard to prosecute such a pattern of behaviour, and recent statistics from the Crown Prosecution Service show that the new offence of controlling or coercive behaviour introduced in 2015 has only been used five times since it came into force. Such behaviour is likely to be easier to rely on in family proceedings in situations where a spouse/cohabitee needs the other party to leave the family home. Injunctions and Occupation Orders can be made by the Court for this purpose.

DELICIOUS MEALS, DELIVERED Email: hello@chefjames.co.uk www.chefjames.co.uk
Chef James ChefJames, owned by James Birchall, is a home delivery service of fine food located in Hampton Vale. The food has a healthy benefit and is seen more as a snack during the mid-week which can just be taken out of the fridge after a hard day’s work. Even though the business has only been running for two months, James is a very experienced chef. James used to work in London in a chain of restaurants and even served Prince Charles, so he knows what he is doing. For future plans, James aspires to open a cookery school for college students, disadvantaged children and also the homeless. A social enterprise, so he can provide back to the community and provides them with life skills for the future ahead of them. Sounds like your sort of thing?
In January, Scott became one of Slimming World’s high-flying Gold Consultants again. The accolade is awarded in recognition of achieving the highest levels of support for slimmers, with Scott giving expert advice to help the people of Hampton Vale reach their weightloss goals week after week. Scott was one of a high-flying group of just 74 Slimming World Consultants who have all become Gold Consultants in the last 12 months, making Hampton Vale home to some of the best slimming support in the UK. Scott says: "I’m delighted to have received this Gold Award again, its the 5th year in a row. I truly love my job and I feel so passionate about helping people to change their lives by losing weight. Seeing them succeed is so rewarding and being given this recognition really is the icing on the cake. "It’s not just a triumph for me though, this award belongs to my
Hampton Vale members too. They’re the ones who make our group/s the success that it is/they are, with their fabulous commitment, the lovely warm welcome they give new members and the wonderful, compassionate support they give each other every week. As well as their impressive weight losses while following Slimming World’s Food Optimising eating plan, of course. They make the group(s) a fun and friendly place to be and I can safely say I’m always so excited to see everyone each week. "I truly believe I have the best job in the world helping people to lose weight and achieve their dreams. Each week as members lose weight I see them growing in confidence. I see them changing their health, becoming more active, trying out new foods and recipes, and finding the courage to take on challenges that they’ve always dreamed of. Members who arrive at group with their self-esteem at rock bottom start to hold their heads high and stand tall as they lose weight successfully and share their experiences and success with the rest of the group. It was an honour to collect this award on stage in Birmingham, I just wish I could have taken all of my members with me! "The Hampton Vale groups have really put healthy weight loss on the map in Hampton Vale. Together, they’ve lost an amazing 723st/ 6.5 lbs this year. Obesity is at record levels everywhere and with a large per cent of adults in Hampton being affected, many people here are suffering a range of weight-related health problems from diabetes to heart problems and feelings of low self-worth that impact on their working and personal lives every day. So anything that helps people to lose weight by adopting healthy eating habits and becoming more active is making a difference – both to themselves and future generations too. I’m extremely proud to be a part of that difference."

Transform
GARDENING
your lawn
The warm late summer/early autumn temperatures make it an ideal time to sow grass seed. Whether it’s repairing thin, problem areas to completely renovating a tired and worn out lawn, now is a good time to do these jobs.
S
isters Sarah and Jo who run GreenThumb Peterborough and Oundle give their tops tips for doing this work if it didn’t get done in the spring. Jo says “how to seed bare or thin patches is one of our most common enquiries. We often see lawns where grass seed has just been scattered on the ground and then left not watered making the chances of quick and successful germination really slim”.
down as this is unlikely to germinate well. As a rough guide the seed should be around 5 and 10mm apart. 3. Cover with a thin layer of soil This only needs to be between 1 and 5mm, just enough to cover the seed for good germination and to help keep the birds off. 4. Keep the ground moist Water is absolutely essential to swell the seed and encourage growth. You must water regularly if the weather is dry but don’t flood or puddle the areas. Ideally, use a sprinkler on a hose and water just enough to keep the surface moist. Little and often is the best method. 5. Mow when the new grass is long enough With your mower on a high setting give the new grass a light cut when it’s about 5cm high. Avoid the new grass getting too long so a first cut when it’s about 5cm high will help the grass thicken, and get stronger, ready to withstand the winter.
Here are our 5 easy steps to getting it right: ready to withstand the winter. 1. Prepare the ground With a hand tool, rake away any dead grass or moss to expose the surface of the soil. The soil surface needs to be crumbly (not compact and hard) to ensure good contact with the seed. Fill any sunken holes with soil to bring them up to one level before sowing the seed. 2. Sow the seed Lightly scatter the grass seed but resist putting a thick covering

Grab yourself a bargain Paper Self-Assessment Tax Return: The 2015-16 tax return deadline for taxpayers who continue to submit paper Self-Assessment returns is 31 October 2016. Late submission of a Self-Assessment return will become liable to a £100 late filing penalty. The penalty will apply even if there is no liability or if any tax due is paid in full by 31 January 2017. We would recommend that anyone still submitting paper tax returns consider the benefits of submitting the returns electronically. In this way they will benefit from an additional three months (until 31 January 2017) in which to file their return. Taxpayers with certain underpayments in the 2015-16 tax year can elect to have this amount collected via their tax code (in 2017-18), provided they are in employment or in receipt of a UK-based pension. The coding adjustment applies to certain debts and the amount of debt that can be coded out ranges from £3,000 to £17,000 based on a graduated scale. The maximum coding out allowance only applies to taxpayers with earnings exceeding £90,000. Daily penalties of £10 per day will apply if the tax return is still outstanding three months after the filing date up to a maximum of £900. If the return still remains outstanding further higher penalties will be charged from six months and twelve months. Taxpayers that received a letter informing them that they have to submit a paper return after 30 July 2016 have an extended deadline which runs for three months from the date they received the letter to submit a paper return.
