WOULD YOU LIKE TO SEE A DOG PARK IN HAMPTON?
Contact us with your requirements today.
I have a puppy called Perro. Whilst I was working out in Spain, I discovered that there was a dog park nearby and couldn’t wait to get all his vaccinations done so he was ready to go and play.

This dog park was a basic, fenced area with a few pieces of dog agility equipment. It was an essential place for the development of his character. He was able to socialise every single night! He learnt from the bigger dogs how to behave and play. He made some good friends who he met frequently, as did I. This park was a great place for me to learn and ask questions about dogs, as Perro is my first dog. I hope that a place like this can be made in Hampton to help bring together to dogs and dog owners in the community. After speaking to O&H Hampton, they made a short statement: Following a supportive post for a Dog Park in Hampton. O&H are now looking at a low key area of land in Hampton which can be securely fenced off an area to be used as a 'Dog Park'.
If you think this is a good idea, please post in the Hampton Gazette group or email us at info@hamptongazette.co.uk

LEISURE FACILITIES Protect your pensions! This is not a financial advice column but family lawyers dealing with finances in divorce come across pensions all the time as one of the major assets from the marriage.
Peterborough Marriott Leisure Club offers something for everyone and a little bit more than you would expect from a health and fitness club. Including ordering food from our pool side menu and a baby pool where the little ones can play safely.
T: 01733 375599 www.marriottleisure.co.uk Lynch Wood, Peterborough Business Park, Peterborough, PE2 6GB
Clients often overlook the importance of the pension assets when planning on how best to share the house, the bank accounts and the savings. Older clients who have a retirement date in sight are not so casual about pensions but even if retirement is 20 or more years away, a pension fund can already have been built up by one or both of the spouses, and needs to be analysed for the purpose of including it in the matrimonial pot. Even those clients who do recognise the importance of pension sharing within a financial settlement, often want to cut corners. This casual approach may be acceptable with money purchase pension funds which can be valued like a lump sum in a bank. But if there is any element of defined benefits or other complications that are features of most government and some company pensions, a prudent family lawyer will always recommend obtaining a pension actuarial report. Otherwise, it is guesswork as to how much your share will be and one of you could be very disappointed, the other pleasantly surprised. If you have any questions about how to share your pension assets on divorce, make sure you consult with an experienced family law solicitor to avoid losing out.

The Community Skips at Beaumont Way and Hampton College Car Park in September were very well used and the Parish Council is now researching for lucrative offers from suppliers so that this service takes place again. A second bench will be installed at the Memorial Garden on Braymere Road, later this month. This has been funded by a sum of money bequeathed by a gentleman called Mr Aiden Fogarty and is in his memory. We currently have 3 PCSO’s in Hampton; Natalie Rycraft (Hargate), Tina Griffin (Vale), Tracy Proctor (Leys/HG school). Please feel free to contact them regarding police issues; contact details can be found on the Cambs. Police website. All residents are welcome to attend Council meetings in the Tesco Community room at 7p.m. Full Council meetings are on the first Thursday of every month & Finance & General Purpose meetings, the third Tuesday of each month. There is a Public Forum at both meetings and you can stay for part or whole of the meeting. Please look at our forthcoming agendas on-line at hamptonpc.org.uk or on the Display boards around Hampton, available 3 days before meetings, as there may be a scheduled item of particular interest to you. ut the bulky local business directory Yellow Pages as we know it is coming to end – and from next year onwards will no longer be published on paper. There was a time when no home would want to be without the Yellow Pages, in case of an emergency flooding or that last minute delivery of flowers. But after more than half a century – the directory will continue only in an online format, with the final print run next January. I suppose that owners Yell have recognised that this is a sign of the times, and from the view of Safe Local Trades - our business, brand and reputations has largely been built online, born in an age when websites are your shop window. your box. Having a user-friendly website which can be navigated with ease is what people want when looking for a service. Offering transparent feedback and customer reviews also helps to engage the customer and offer confidence. To have a mobile friendly online service is crucial in today’s busy and fast pace of life; whether you want to book an oven cleaner in your lunch break, make contact with a plumber whilst waiting on the platform for your train or book an appointment with a landscape gardener whilst on the school run. And of course, along with the website comes the social media element – certainly not around in the days when the young man using Yellow Pages in the TV ad was looking for a French polisher! While there may be an element of nostalgia associated with Yellow Pages, our mobile lives mean we let our fingers do the tapping and swiping rather than the walking!

Instructions:
Saturday 28 October Highway to Hell’oween, Monster Tribute Rock Fest at South Grove Community Centre in Peterborough. 6:30 - 11:30pm. Minimum age 14. Tickets can be purchased on Skiddle.com, Tickx.co.uk, List.co.uk among others.
Halloween Candlelit Ghost Tours Tuesdays 10 & 31October Halloween Candlelit Ghost Tours available. 7:30pm. Tickets cost £5 for adults and £3 for children under 16 at the Peterborough Museum.
First mix 1 cup of PVA glue, 1 tsp of bicarbonate of soda and ½ cup of shaving foam into a large bowl. Squeeze some glow in the dark face/body face paint and/or a couple drops of your chosen food colouring into the mixture. Mix well until you have a cake batter consistency. Then squirt some contact lens solution into the bowl, mix well, add another squirt and mix again until you end up with a thick mixture you can shape into a ball. Keep adding squirts of the contact lens solution until you get your desired consistency or if the mixture is still too sticky.
Take a glow stick and place it into a white balloon, then inflate the balloon. Next draw on your balloon any ghostly design with the permanent black marker, but make sure the tip of the balloon is facing upwards so that string can be attached. Place a muslin cloth on the ghost balloon, then with the string tie the muslin cloth to the tip of the balloon to secure everything in place, this way you can attach your balloon to any ceiling lights.

TRICK-OR-TREATING SAFETY TIPS
You will need:
Try to always be around your parent/guardian (under 12) or around a trusted group of friends, which will prevent the chances of you getting lost and being unable to seek help when necessary. Start trick-or-treating early, this way you will be able to better see others you encounter on the street and have a clearer view of your child at all times to avoid possible dangers. Plan your route, this way you are less likely to get lost and stay on well lit streets with plenty of other people. Never go inside a home whilst trick-or-treating and try to avoid homes you aren’t familiar with, especially ones without any Halloween decorations. Throw away any treats that look opened or unwrapped, and give them to your parent for inspection. Avoid sharp or inflexible props because you might accidently harm others around you or yourself, so parents should avoid posing unnecessary risks to their own child and other people when picking or making costumes.
Plain white candle Large red candle Paper plate Matches Rubber gloves Instructions: Place both the red and white candle under paper plates to prevent wax from damaging your surfaces. Light your large red candle and wait until you can see a good amount of wax, gently pick up the candle with rubber gloves and pour the red wax onto the white candle. Repeat these steps until a good portion of your white candle is covered with the red wax and has a blood dripping effect.

It’s a funny time of year ... yesterday I could see a man on a ride-on lawnmower cutting the grass in brilliant sunshine and today the pedestrians have come running into the centre to avoid a really heavy shower of rain. So the weather is unreliable, and unfortunately so too are my attempts to give you a topical tip. I’ve been told that since writing the article which started off “Too much sunlight is harmful to your skin” there has barely been a sunny day since! Flu Clinics Sticking to a safer subject – this is the time of year that people who are entitled to receive an NHS Flu jab ought to visit their GP surgeries and get one. A flu vaccine provides the best protection against the virus which infects many people and can cause serious illness and death each year. At Hampton Health we have our drop in clinic on Saturday 7 October between 9am and 11:30am when you can just turn up and get booked in and jabbed on a first come first served basis. We then have slots available with nurses every day. So, if you are in the surgery for whatever reason and entitled to have a flu jab just ask at reception and we will do it for you on the day. Blood Tests – available daily at Hampton Health For many years now most of our patients have had to be sent to the City Care Centre for their blood tests to be carried out. That is no longer the case and we are able to offer clinics here every day so that the requested bloods can be taken. We are sure that will be much more convenient for our patients If a doctor or nurse decides that you need a blood test and the surgery is convenient for you then please ask a member of our reception team to book it for you here. Will Symons – Practice Manager of Hampton Health

Christ the Servant King the Parish Church of Hampton This month, as the nights draw in and it feels dark early, CSK will be celebrating the importance of light. Our annual ‘Time to Remember, Time to Give Thanks’ service will take place on Sunday 29 October at 3pm. This service is for those who have been bereaved, whether recently or a long time ago. We read out the names of loved ones we want to remember before God and each other, but there is also an opportunity to light a candle, as a sign of hope. One of Jesus’ well-known sayings is that he is the 'Light of the World', but he continued by saying, ‘Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but have the light of life.’ That’s a powerful reminder that whatever we’re facing, we don’t have to do it alone, but can be filled with his light. When you turn on a light switch in your house, darkness can’t remain in the room. Light triumphs over darkness. Even a little candle takes away the darkness around it and its warmth and glow heats a whole room. It’s the same with human beings - one person shining can change a whole home, workplace or even neighbourhood. At CSK, we think that’s reason to celebrate! So, on Tuesday 31 October 5– 7pm, we will also be hosting a Light Party for primary-age children and their families. The dress theme this year is Superheroes, but any costumes that aren’t scary are welcome. Join us for an evening of food, games, crafts and plenty of fun! Many blessings, Rachel Call our church office on 01733 248236 for further information about either event.

A typical lesson would begin with Pranayama; breathing exercises designed to energise and detoxify the body, relieves stress, relax the mind and ensure restful sleep. Next we would look at the Pawanmuktasana series – a gentle warm up – which exercises every joint in the body, helping to prevent and relieve arthritis. Standing poses stretch and strengthen the back, shoulders and leg muscles. Backbends expand lung capacity and counter poor posture which is the origin of 90% of back pain. Forward bends relieve tension and pain in the back to induce relaxation. Spinal twists improve digestion, strengthen core muscles and nourish organs such as the pancreas, kidneys, liver and gall bladder. Balancing poses strengthen legs, ankles and feet, help prevent fallen arches and improve concentration and co-ordination. Yoga can help many with many medical conditions including blood pressure, arthritis, diabetes, back, hip and knee problems, headaches, asthma, fibromyalgia, irritable bowel syndrome, depression, anxiety and much more. eeling apprehensive and with only one salon experience behind her, Charlene was slightly intimidated by the prospect of entering a salon again. Nevertheless, when a friend recommended that she try Paul Short Hair Salon in Hampton Vale, she decided it was time to brave the experience. “I needn’t have worried” explains Charlene, “as soon as I walked in, the relaxed and friendly atmosphere immediately put me at ease.” She was invited to have an informal chat to discuss the styles she preferred. “No-one has ever really taken the time to talk about my hair before so this was a treat" Charlene revealed. “Paul took a genuine interest in finding out what I wanted to achieve, suggesting what
You’re a busy mum and there just isn’t time to focus on anything other than the kids. You’re not alone. Like so many mothers, Charlene admitted to letting her hair care routine slip into obscurity since having children. Could anyone successfully work magic on her wayward locks? might suit me and giving various options based on his recommendations. He wanted us to work together to personalise my look.” Feeling reassured, Charlene booked the appointment for her new style and cut. “The visit had inspired me; my trepidation had become excitement and I couldn’t wait to see his ideas come to life!” The important day arrived and as she entered the Salon, Charlene received another warm welcome while they went over the ideas discussed in the initial consultation. “I always had a constant t-section of highlights. Paul saw that there was just a block of really light blonde colour in there and it stood out when the roots were growing through. He recommended
that I added some more honey blonde tones to match my natural colour showing through underneath. For the cut, he explained that as I have a square shaped face a triangle fringe would suit me best. It all made perfect sense so it was exactly what I decided to go for”. Charlene is very happy with her new style and is so glad that she decided to take those first tentative steps towards achieving her new look. “I absolutely love my new hair. It took time, care and patience to cut, and skill to know which style would suit my facial features. It has also been easy to care for home, as something I have always been concerned about when going to a Salon is whether I would be able to get the same look after I’ve washed it.”
With over 22 years’ experience in hair dressing, Paul started his training in Peterborough and has worked in many salons, including Pkai in Hampton, Oliver Lee in Stamford and Hob Salons in London where he was part of the education team for 5 years winning presigous awards such as ‘Art Team of the Year’. In 2008 he achieved the Wella Trend Vision silver award which is completed in three stages; Photographic, Regional and the Finals. Paul worked with the famous hairdresser Akin Konizi and his team who had previously won British Hairdresser of the Year no less than 4 times! ‘’Akin Konizi was inspirational”, Paul acknowledged, “he mentored me and taught me the skills I have today.’’ He explains that it is important not to lose touch with expert styling, “I aim to keep it new and fresh, achieved through constant training. And to maintain the ‘wow’ factor, the focus stays on three key aspects: fashion, suitability and technical mastery, and without all three, nothing will work!” The salon industry is tough, but offering haircuts for the whole family, a relaxed environment and very strong skills, a bespoke service and a personal touch, Paul Short is sure to make this new Salon a resounding success. Samaria Hello wonderful people of Hampton, my name is Samira, I am an award winning international celebrity makeup artist.
I
have been based in Sunderland for the past few years of my career but recently I have relocated to Hampton Vale to be closer to central London for my career. This means I can become more of a freelance makeup artist, as travelling from the north to the south maybe twice a week was extremely difficult. I specialise in makeup artistry and HD brows although I do all aspects of beauty treatments including, CND Shellac nails, lashes and much more. I also teach makeup master classes on a one to one basis to give people more confidence in applying everyday makeup to themselves. My work has appeared on national and international television sets, and has also been published in Vogue magazine. I have taught newsreaders and weather ladies how to
apply makeup at ITV Studios, Manchester. I work each season at London Fashion Week for various designers and shows. I have worked with singers, actors, actresses and performers but each and every client is as important to me as the next one. My aim is to enhance everyone's natural beauty and make people of today feel good about themselves regardless of size, age, race or religion... I love to see the look on people's faces as they raise the mirror after having a makeover to reveal their new look. It gives me a real sense of satisfaction. I am also looking into writing a book, which could be something to watch out for in the future. I can't wait to meet you all. Some of you have received my leaflet and are already clients of mine, so thank you for welcoming me to Hampton Vale. (Please see my advert on page 20).

An acrobat? A flying trapeze artist? Probably these and more could be used to describe the movement of the grey squirrel.
of Hampton
T
he trees of Hampton are alive with them, especially those behind St James’s Lake in Vale. If surprised they scamper up the nearest available tree trunk and are away, leaping from branch to branch at high speed, never seeming to miss a foothold with those sharp claws. There are apparently 2.5 million grey squirrels in this country, having multiplied rapidly since their introduction from North America in 1876 as fashionable new additions to country estates (most notably at Woburn Abbey by the Duke of Bedford), with
Lakota (Lover of Nature)
no-one obviously realising how much they would affect the native red squirrel population. Gradually they have pushed out red squirrels by means of dominating the food supply and by transmitting the squirrel pox virus, which red squirrels have no immunity to. They are attractive looking creatures, though, and as such have been included in many children’s stories, with one of the most famous being that of Timmy Tiptoes, a squirrel who gets trapped in a woodpecker’s hole after deciding to store nuts there instead of burying them in the ground. In fact squirrels do bury nuts and seeds in the ground during the autumn as a food supply during winter. They scatter them around woodland areas and through their highly developed spatial memory and acute sense
of smell they can find them again weeks or even months later. During more abundant times, however, they also eat berries, fungi, bark, buds and shoots. Apparently on rare occasions, when food is scarce, they have been known to eat smaller rodents, bird eggs and nestlings. Grey squirrels breed twice a year: from December to February and from May to June. The young squirrels are born in a large, untidy looking nest, or drey, found high in the trees or in hollow tree trunks, and lined with moss, dried grass and feathers. The young squirrels leave the drey at about ten weeks old and can live for around six years. They are to my mind one of the most attractive creatures in and around Hampton, and one which is particularly entertaining due to its intelligence and playful antics.
Autumn comes calling
The year moves on to autumn the evening and early morning have a distinct chill and the leaves on the trees take on their distinctive autumn tincture of red, bronze and golden brown.
I
n our gardens the flowers start to fade and many plants die back ahead of winter. The plentiful food of September has diminished and bugs and many other mammals seek out safe havens to overwinter. Many gardeners now spend hours raking and clearing the falling leaves, trimming back the dying foliage to the ground but before you do this spare a thought for the wildlife in your garden leave some areas untrimmed, leave some areas covered in leaf litter and even create piles of dead leaves. These habitats are where hedgehogs, toads, newts and
many of our bugs will look to overwinter. Bumblebees prefer dried moss piles so rake off your lawn and make a pile of winter paradise for the majestic bumble queens. Leave hollow stems standing they can provide a winter home to so many bugs and if you have a meadow now is the time to cut, then rake off a week later after the seed has fallen but leave a few hummocks uncut so that grasshoppers and crickets can overwinter with ease. And finally remember that ivy with its late flowers is a great source of late season pollen and nectar for our precious bees.

Fall Autumn for
Back in the nineties I travelled to the White Mountain region of the USA to experience the Fall firs-hand. My husband still jokes that it’s the only time in my life I’ve ever been speechless!
C
lear blue skies, golden sun and hyper-saturated foliage colours gave the impression that the whole New Hampshire landscape was on fire. The effect was unutterably beautiful. Back home in the UK I was a woman on a mission. I had to capture some of that beauty for my own plot. Through research I discovered that the quality of autumn colour in the New Hampshire region depends on two things: the combination of tree species
and the climatic conditions. The sugar maple, red oak, mespilus and viburnum are the trees responsible for the famous vivid red and purple hues of the Fall but their colourful magic is dependant on warm sunny days followed by cool nights where the temperature doesn’t drop below 7-8°C. So now I had two problems. No way could I guarantee perfect weather conditions in the UK and then there was the small issue of space...the smallness of the space

being the issue! I would not be able to shoe-horn a Red Oak or a Sugar Maple into my suburban garden. So I hit the books and the garden centres and gradually I compiled a list of solid autumn performers which will put on a dazzling display regardless of the British climate. Now my garden is brim full of glorious, fiery autumn hues and with a little planning and my ‘approved’ list you too can bring a little of the Boston Falls to British suburbia.
Japanese Maples Varieties of Acer palmatum - both green and purple - colour well and are small enough for most gardens. They do prefer acid soil so if you live on lime they perform better in a pot. They need shelter from chilly winds, which can scorch their leaves. Dogwood, Cornus alba The leaves begin to turn pink in late September and you also have the benefit of bright red or yellow whippy stems afterwards, depending on the variety. Euonymus Alatus A quirky plant which has corky, winged outgrowths on its stems. This is a quiet plant for most of the year but produces the most brilliant crimson leaves in autumn plus purple - red fruits which split to form four winged lobes with a bright orange seed in the centre. There is also a compact variety which only grows to 1m so is suitable for small gardens. Berberis Thunbergii and its varieties are around 2m tall, make a great hedge and take on spectacular hues around October just before the leaves fall. Coloured leafed heathers These work hard all year but are at their best when burnished by the autumn chill.

Pet Dental Care Tips Just like humans, pets' teeth need regular care and attention to keep them healthy. Which pets suffer with dental problems? Smaller breeds of dogs are more prone to require dental assistance in the form of veterinary cleaning than larger breeds due to their small, close together teeth. This also makes cats equally likely to need a little bit of expert help every now and again.
Brushing Your Pets Teeth If your pet will let you, daily brushing is the best way to prevent dental disease. Some pets will quite happily tolerate having their teeth brushed regularly, especially if it has been introduced when they are young, however many are not so compliant. If your pet will let you brush their teeth, ensure you use pet specific toothpaste as human toothpaste for example contains fluoride which is toxic to dogs. For an in depth guide on how to brush a dogs teeth visit www.pedigree.com/dentalcare/

If your pet experiences dental problems your Vets will be able to recommend suitable diets with specific teeth cleaning properties to help reduce the need for repeat treatment.

EDUC ATI N Hargate Primary
The autumn term is well and truly underway at Hampton Hargate and we have already had many different and exciting activities happening. Our Roald Dahl day was a huge success with lots of amazing costumes to see. The children also took part in the local Hampton Fun Run in aid of Macmillan and Thorpe Hall. We still have lots to look forward to and will of course be ending the term with our customary annual Friends Christmas Fair and our fabulous Christmas performances which are always a great showcase of the children’s talents! We are really pleased to say that the new reception children have settled in quickly and have been enjoying their first experiences of school. They have been learning all about life at school and meeting new friends. Mrs Wilkinson, our Reception Team Leader said “I am really pleased with how the children have settled into school life and I am looking forward to busy and exciting first term with them.” We also have the following meeting dates for the Reception – September 2018 intake: Tuesday 14 November 9.15am for Reception Intake Sept 2018 Tuesday 28 November 6pm for Reception Intake Sept 2018
Spooky Fun
We have enjoyed looking after our nursery pet Dusty, the rabbit. The children have been taking it in turns to feed him, clean out his cage and take him for walks in the garden. The children have been learning how to care for different animals. Our recent topic has been Hansel and Gretel. The children have been using different shapes to design their own houses, and decorating gingerbread people to go inside. We would like to welcome the new children and families we have had join us over the past month. We have lots of new starters and are looking forward to the journey you will have with us here at Little Acorns. We have limited spaces left to start with us this school year. We are now booking places for September 2018. To come and have a look around or if you are interested in a space contact us on 01733 244000 or littleacorns.daynursery@yahoo.co.uk
Please contact the school office to book a place on 01733 296780.

f you are like me, your wellies and raincoat are seeing frequent use. Not only are the clocks going forward, October is also the kids’ halfterm and, of course, Halloween! My family love Halloween; each year we host a small get-together where the kids dress up and I prepare lots of scary foods! Here are my top three quick and very easy to prepare treats:

You can use little plastic spiders, and creepy crawlies for decoration too (which are available in most shops around Halloween time). Or, you can make your own decorations like these spiders, which were from a kit available from Baker Ross (online) last year. You can make them by using coloured card instead and pipe cleaners for the wiggly legs. for New Sponsors
Peterborough Firework Fiesta New sponsors for Peterborough’s Firework Fiesta are lined up to make this year’s event the region’s biggest and most spectacular community firework display.
B
ritannia Fire and Security has come on board as headline sponsor and will take a leading role in supporting this important fundraising event, together with sponsors Anglia Ruskin University. Now in its 40th Year, Peterborough Firework Fiesta is in the top 10 fireworks displays in the UK and a leading local charity fundraiser. All proceeds are ploughed back into Peterboroughbased charities and good causes; in the course of its history the event has raised over £500,000 for local charities. Colin Pogson, Managing Director of Britannia Fire & Security told us “We are delighted and proud to sponsor this spectacular event which is a highlight in Peterborough's calendar. The funds
34
raised are vital for local charities and good causes and we're looking forward to helping to raise even more this year.” Each year Peterborough Firework Fiesta’s popularity grows, with around 11,000 visitors enjoying last year’s spectacular display of fireworks by Titanium, the company behind national celebration fireworks such as the Commonwealth Games and New Year displays in London and Edinburgh. Free parking, live music by Heart FM, food outlets, fairground rides make it great family entertainment. Organised by the Rotary Club of Peterborough and Round Table, Firework Fiesta last year raised over £20,000 which was distributed to 26 charities and good causes in Peterborough.
The event will take place at Peterborough Arena at the East of England Showground on Saturday 4 November. Advance tickets will go on sale on 6th October, priced £3 for children aged under 15 (under 2 years are free); £7 for adults and will available to purchase.

After Before
VAT on Roaming Charges This change takes effect from 1 November 2017 and alters the place of supply for VAT purposes of mobile telecommunication services made to U.K. non-business users (for example, private consumers) when they use their mobile phones outside the E.U. It aligns the U.K. treatment of these services with internationally agreed guidelines. The changes means that UK VAT will be charged on roaming services used by UK consumers outside the E.U. The intention is to resolve the inconsistency between the taxation of mobile phone use in the E.U. and that applied to outside the E.U. The change will bring UK VAT rules into line with the internationally agreed approach and it will also ensure mobile phone companies cannot use the inconsistency to avoid U.K. VAT. Whilst talking about roaming, mobile roaming charges across the E.U. finally ended on 15 June 2017 amid warnings to consumers to check their tariffs and remain aware of unexpected costs. The charges that were abolished, means U.K. mobile phone users can use their regular allowance of calls, texts and data for no extra cost from anywhere in the E.U. The Roam Like Home legislation aims to prevent consumers receiving huge bills after downloading films or other data while travelling in Europe, but BBC watchdog has warned that differences between providers when it comes to the details of tariffs could lead to unexpected costs for customers.
