Light in dark seasons In recent months it has often been hard to tell what season it is; with the summer weather in spring, gale-force winds in July and an autumnal end to August. By the time you are reading this we could be basking in an Indian Summer or even snow! Add to this the general feeling of normal time being suspended and many of us are feeling disorientated by 2020. However, the drawing in of the nights and fading of the summer sun are sure signs that the colder and darker months of the year are fast approaching. For millennia people have used light to navigate; sundials helped to tell the time of day and sailors used stars to work out what direction to go. Light is also essential to see where to go and if the way is safe, keeping us on the road and out of the ditch. Now, more than ever, we need help navigating through life with its many and increased challenges. However, even in the darkest months of life we’re not without help to find our way. In Psalm 119 the writer says to God: “Your word is a lamp for my feet, a light on my path” (Psalm 119:105). The Bible is God’s main way of speaking to us to show us the way in life, keeping us on the right track. If you’re feeling disorientated and lacking direction why not try reading the Bible? You could start with reading about Jesus, the Light of the World in John’s gospel, or dipping into the Psalms which are prayers written for many different seasons of life (check out our recent sermon series on the Psalms in our 10am services on our YouTube channel). Even in our darkest moments God’s light can lead us on the right path. Revd Joel Wicks, Pioneer Curate
Islands in the Sunset by Nathan Minter The islands have been ordered and will be going on Sunset Lake very soon; one nesting island for the swans and 4 to help with reeds. Work parties have recommenced this month with lots being done on all lakes. Fishing has been fantastic recently, with Sunday matches proving popular, and at least 55lb needed to be in the top three.

Sue Ryder Charity Walk You may have seen in the press recently that we're currently facing a massive gap in our fundraising, all of our events were cancelled, and our retail shops have been closed since March due to COVID-19. In an attempt to bridge the fundraising gap, we're holding a virtual event in October Walk to Remember 2020. Individuals or groups of people are invited to register, free of charge, to walk either 5k or 10k in their local area in memory of a loved one. The 'official' Walk to Remember date is 17 October but people can complete their walk on any day or over a number of days during the month. As I said, the event is free to register. All we're asking is for people to raise £145 as a team, this could pay for a Sue Ryder nurse for a day or to donate £21 which could pay for an hour of our expert and compassionate nursing care. More information is available on our website https://www.sueryder.org/support-us/ fundraise/events/walk-to-remember-2020.
It’s being organised by Sue Ryder Thorpe Hall Hospice, which cares for people with life-limiting conditions as well as supporting their families. Victoria Potter, Community Fundraiser at Sue Ryder Thorpe Hall Hospice, said: “Due to uncertainties in the current situation, we have sadly postponed all of our fundraising events this year, but are excited to announce our Walk to Remember 2020. “You can walk any day throughout October or join hundreds of others across the country for our official walk day on Saturday 17 October.
“Choose your distance of 5K or 10K, your start and finish line and Sign up for the Walk to Remember a route that means something to you, to raise crucial funds or make Get together with family and friends to a donation and help us continue to celebrate someone special this October on the Walk to Remember 2020. be there when it matters.” Sign up for free at: www.sueryder.org/walktoremember Contact hospice’s fundraising team on 01733 225 999 or thorpe.fundraising@sueryder.org

How CityFibre’s gigabit-capable broadband network will transform lives in Peterborough We may be a nation suffering from Zoom fatigue, but if the last few months has shown us anything, it is just how important digital connectivity is. Throughout lockdown, internet access enabled many of us to keep working. However, slow and unreliable internet has made using apps like Skype and Zoom a frustrating experience. It’s something felt across the whole of the UK, where just 15 per cent of premises have access to full fibre internet, considered the gold standard. As the UK’s third national digital infrastructure platform, CityFibre is working on a solution – by building game-changing networks in areas including Peterborough.
Powering our ambitions When you hear fibre being mentioned by providers, they often actually mean connections that are only part fibre. These usually include some copper wiring for the final stretch to your home, a major factor in lagging and dropped connections.
Beyond increased productivity, full fibre connectivity gives employees the ability to work from home without worrying about their connection, providing vital flexibility and reassurance. You may have also heard about Smart Cities. With full fibre, cities can implement their own Smart City vision. There are plenty of examples across the globe, from digital tech making parking problems a thing of the past in South Korea’s biggest city to smart waste management trucks on New York’s roads – and the implementation here will be driven by the specific needs of the city. One thing we do know is that it’ll be powered by full fibre.
Adding value to Peterborough There’ll be a real economic boost over the next 15 years too, according to research we commissioned with Regeneris.
Full fibre is different, using fibre connections for the entire length of the journey. That allows for Gigabit-capable ‘lightning speed’ services and superior reliability.
Access to full fibre could unlock £28m in business productivity and innovation, a further £25m could be driven from start-ups and Smart City initiatives could add as much as £54m.
With the UK’s average broadband speed only 22.37Mbps compared to 55.18Mbps in Sweden, Europe’s top ranked country, there’s clearly work to be done.
The future isn’t as far away as you may think. Together with our contractors, Granemore Group, we’ve been building across Peterborough since 2018 and many residents and businesses are already making use of their full fibre connection to great effect.
The difference full fibre can make When it comes to business, many companies are struggling with dataheavy tasks and significant server strain, meaning employees are tapping their fingers while waiting for a file to download. Full fibre eliminates that problem.
In a period of uncertainty, one thing we know for sure is that connection has never been more valuable – and with full fibre, we can ensure that Peterborough has the connectivity it needs to emerge from this challenging period in a stronger position than ever before.
For more general information or to learn more about CityFibre, visit www.cityfibre. com/gigabit-cities or follow us on Twitter and/or Facebook @CityFibre #GigabitPboro

HAMPTON HOBBIES AND GAMES We are busy preparing for the two big, upcoming festivities, Halloween and Christmas. With so much uncertainty this year, Halloween is another event that we may all have to do differently. Although we don't have any tricks, we do have plenty of treats for Halloween 2020. We have a new section on our website dedicated to Halloween Games and Puzzles, so you can enjoy some safe Halloween fun with your family at home. We are a small independent business with over 70 games and 100 jigsaw puzzles in stock, and that's before you look at our art, crafts, and model kit range, too! As a local business, all deliveries to the PE7 postcode are free, with no minimum spend, so you can enjoy the benefit of having items delivered straight to your door without any stress. I'm pleased to say that so far we have been able to deliver all PE7 orders the next day. We want to play an important role in the local community and in Peterborough and we were delighted to be able to deliver some much needed games to the local Dementia Ward at Peterborough Hospital. We hope you will take a look at our website, and we look forward to serving you soon. https://hamptonhobbiesandgames.co.uk/ John Howard Hampton Hobbies and Games

11 CLASSIC FILMS TURNING 30 IN 2020
Do They Hold Up? 1990 was 30 years ago...30 years! When someone says 'about 30 years ago', I instantly think the 70s; I doubt I’m the only one who does that either! Ah, simpler times. 1990 gave us some really good, original films, but as they reach their 30th birthday, do they still hold their own against the films of today?
HOME ALONE
GOODFELLAS
KINDERGARTEN COP
Local boy terrorises honest burglars, if only! The fact that this film was outlandish with its violence when it came out; but in a funny kind of way, the story and the ensuing carnage would never have actually happened. That aside, the script, humour, acting and overall feel of the film means it stills holds its own against 'comedies' of today.
A classic, and rightly so. This film just feels ageless. It looks, sounds, and reads like a modern film. It gives the likes of The Departed a run for its money and it certainly doesn’t seem like a 30 year old. The script and delivery of lines are still bang on, with the production and direction still give off the feel of a modern film. Absolutely holds up well. Classy film.
FBI Agent pretends to be a teacher, scars kids for life. Arnie does himself no justice with this film and his cheesy, trying to be a nice kind man act fails to hit the mark. It failed then and it doesn’t hold up now. The acting is wooden, the script bland and sloppy and the chemistry is still no better. Modern movies like Daddy Day Care etc all have a much more warmer feel to them. This may have been a hoot 30 years ago, but that’s where it should stay now.
Fun Fact: Macaulay Culkin ad-libbed the immortal line “you guys give up, or you thirsty for more?”
DIE HARD 2 John McClane defends airport against terrorists, blows most of it up. Bruce Willis is back and still looking haggard as hell. The script is good, and parts of the acting are just cheesy and lame. BUT… it still holds up against the likes of Fast & Furious due to its constant story arc and its relentless pursuit of being as 'normal' as possible
TOTAL RECALL Again, the remake was shoddy and ill-conceived. The reason the original was so good was because it felt futuristic and reasonable in assumption of what the future would be like. Other than that, the acting was cheesy and over the top, the practical FX have definitely not aged well, which is a shame as that bug in the brain scene was amazing, and gross. The script was OK and the scenery were as good as they could be in the 90’s. Not really aged well
Fun Fact: The “futuristic” vehicles were actually Mexican Public Transport vehicles with a lick of silver paint and TV’s added to them
DAYS OF THUNDER Apart from a much younger looking Tom Cruise, this film holds up very well. The acting is crisp and a lot more believable than most modern films, like Fast & Furious. The script is still class and it has a 'real' feel to it that is still believable. The production and editing of the film is smooth and realistic, making excellent use of tech that modern movies cannot seem to master. And lets not forget the on screen chemistry of Cruise and Kidman. They definitely didn’t fake that!
TREMORS Underground giant worm east folks in the desert “town”. It’s smart too. As much as I would love to say this has held its own, it really hasn’t. I love the film, but the practical FX looks very dated, the on screen chemistry feels strained and the script is a lot weaker than I remember. Kevin Bacon’s mullet cannot bring this film close to holding up unfortunately. Still good for a Sunday evening watch though.
Fun Fact: Kevin Bacon says the film gave him terrible nightmares for years. They got so bad he would pick his wife up, trying to 'rescue' her whilst sleepwalking
BACK TO THE FUTURE 3
MEMPHIS BELLE
Back to the past, again. The weakest of the 3 Back to the Future films, the film has actually aged quiet well. The use of practical FX in this film served it well and the minor CGI used is undetectable. Script is weak, but overall story arc blends nicely into the franchise and ends it very well, unlike others, *cough* Fast & Furious. Better than most similar films nowadays.
I don’t need to say much about this epic piece of cinema. The script is solid, the action and camera work is breathtaking and the acting is superb. The only downside is use of technology. This film absolutely holds up and would easily sit alongside Saving Private Ryan, Dunkirk and the like without looking out of place.
Fun Fact: Arnie was 4th choice for the lead role, behind Patrick Swayze, Bill Murray and Danny DeVito
TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES Oversized, pizza loving turtles follow rat’s instructions to kill masked vigilante. As much as I loved this as a 10 yr old, seeing this now is like killing my childhood memories. The practical FX are so sloppy and dated; it just doesn’t give a real feel to the film. Not that the remakes were ever better. The script is basic and the story weak. Doesn’t hold up against the likes of recent superhero/hero films.
PRETTY WOMAN Rich man woos prostitute, he gives her the world. Still a sopping pile bland trash, this films does not hold its own in my opinion, however there are many out there who would disagree. That’s fine. The script is bland and uninspiring; Roberts and Gere still lack any real chemistry on screen and the cinematography looks very basic in comparison to modern stories like this. That said, I can still appreciate that this is a watchable film on a Sunday Afternoon for those who like this kind of thing.
Fun Fact: Sandra Bullock turned down the lead role, as did 7 other leading ladies, before Julia Roberts was approached. So there you have it. what do you think?

gazette garden
Beautiful Berberis Berberis thunbergii are deciduous shrubs which look particularly fabulous at this time year, producing highly coloured leaves, and often berries which last well into winter. These berries are actually edible and rich in vitamin C, though because they are very acidic, they are not widely consumed by people. They are an important food for many small birds though. They get their other name of 'barberry bush' because of their vicious spines. This makes them useful as an impenetrable barrier hedge and may be another
reason why the berries aren’t harvested much!

Like the colourful Japanese Maple, they originate from Eastern Asia. Berberis vary in colour according to the cultivar and variety. The common Berberis thunbergii have green leaves in spring and summer which turn rich burgundy in autumn. If you'd like the purple colour all year round choose Berberis thunbergii f. atropurpurea, which has purple leaves in spring that turn rich mahogany in autumn. Though Berberis are generally grown for their autumn colour, they are a hard-working shrub, and produce a mass of tiny yellow flowers in spring, providing interest at either end of the year. There is a Berberis for most gardens: They can grow to a maximum height and spread of 1.5m, but there are now dwarf forms which grow to just 50cm, try 'Tiny Gold' or 'Lutin Rouge'. They grow best in full sun but also tolerate partial shade. They do well in most soil types, and even do well in drought, but will thrive particularly well in well drained moist soil. Their easy-going nature extends to aftercare, as they are generally
pest-free and require little attention, other than a trim to tidy them up periodically. If you don't have much space or mainly grow in containers on a balcony 'Lutin Rouge' does very well in a pot. Mid-September to October, and midMarch to April are the best times to plant so now is the perfect time. Dig a hole double the width of the root ball. Sprinkle in a handful of blood, fish and bone and work into the ground. Place the plant into the hole, fill in with soil around the root ball and firm the soil down gently but firmly, finish by watering well. They will appreciate being mulched with well-rotted organic matter in late spring, but they aren't fussy; grass cuttings will do fine. My absolute favourite is Berberis thunbergii f. atropurpurea 'Admiration'. This lovely plant has extremely attractive orange-red foliage, edged with yellow, and forms an attractive mound shape. Its masses of small yellow flowers in the spring followed by purple-crimson berries in autumn make it the most perfect Berberis in my opinion.

environment Can you get involved with THE BIG BUILD 2020? The social enterprise Up The Garden Bath has been challenged by the environmental charity PECT to transform an underused area of green space, in the west of Peterborough, into a new garden. The aim is to create a multi-use area that can be used to grow produce, host educational workshops, and attract wildlife. The plan is for the garden to include innovative vertical planters to make the most of the available space. There will also be bathtub planters to create growing areas at a height that is easily accessible for all volunteers and children. Stuart Dawks, Director of Operations at PECT said: “We really want to demonstrate how unwanted materials can be given a new lease of life and become useful, rather than just being discarded and sent to landfill. We also want to create a community growing area that shows how everyone can create a garden with just the smallest of budgets.
PECT is a grassroots organisation that educates, inspires, and motivates individuals and organisations to change their behaviour to deliver a positive environmental impact. The charity specialises in using eco education and awarenessraising to encourage behaviour change and collective action. The organisation approached Up The Garden Bath about transforming the area, knowing the social enterprise’s reputation for taking old and discarded materials and upcycling them into ready made garden planters and accessories. Up The Garden Bath strives to use 100% recycled and
unwanted materials to give them a new lease of life and for environmental benefit. “Our aim is to renovate the area using only recycled, unwanted, donated materials and with the help and support of willing volunteers, explains Dave Poulton, Founder of Up The Garden Bath. “We want to prove that – with a little creativity, imagination and a collaborative approach – gardening can be accessible and affordable for everyone.
For more information about PECT, visit www.pect.org.uk. The social enterprise is calling for volunteers and donations of materials for the project. If you’d like to get involved, please contact Up The Garden Bath via info@upthegardenbath.co.uk or online at www.upthegardenbath.co.uk.
B-Lines
in Peterborough
B-Lines are an imaginative solution to the problem of the loss of flowers and pollinators. They are a series of ‘insect pathways’ running through our countryside and towns, along which we need to restore and create wildflower-rich habitat steppingstones. They link existing wildlife areas together, creating a network, like a railway, that will weave across the British landscape.
B-Lines have now been mapped across the entire UK aiming to create and restore at least 150,000 hectares of flower-rich habitat. Peterborough sits in the centre of two intersecting lines so most of the city and surrounds is within the B-lines. Buglife in partnership with PECT are developing a project to deliver the Peterborough B-Line
Our bees, butterflies and hoverflies have suffered badly over the last fifty years, due to changes in land use because of modern farming methods, urban spread and new transport links. Since the Second World War 97%, over 3 million hectares (1.5 times the size of Wales) of wildflower-rich grasslands on which pollinators are dependent have been lost reducing pollen and nectar sources and
TIME TO ACT
leading to a serious decline in the wildlife depending on wildflower-rich habitat. Pollination is worth over ÂŁ0.5 billion per annum to the UK farming sector and replacing it with hand pollination would add over ÂŁ2 billion a year to our food bills. A targeted extra charge that would predominantly affect fruit, peas, beans, soft fruits, cucurbits and similar. It is also critical for the survival of eight out of every ten wildflowers in our landscape. Making this happen will take time and will need farmers, landowners, wildlife organisations, businesses, local authorities, and the public to work together to create flowerrich grassland in the best locations. Even if only in a small way you can help; because small steps can have a huge impact if they all fall at the same time.

Distant - Francis Reynolds
Besides my own practice as DenneyDesign, I work part time at Hampton College as Art Technician. Francis Reynolds, the artist I’m going to introduce you to today exhibits locally and nationally but also takes time to do weekly workshops with our 6th form art pupils; I will show you some of their work inspired by his teaching.
FRANCIS REYNOLDS Francis returned to education as a mature student in 2007 to study Fine Art and graduated with a BA (1st Class Honours) at Loughborough University in 2012. The intention at the start of Reynolds` education was to become teacher; as his experience of teaching others was successful and rewarding. However, with the support of his wife, family and the local Academy’s employing him as an Artist in residence and consultant, Francis can still be involved in the education of others together with continuing his practice. His paintings are held in Private collections throughout the UK and internationally. Francis’ practice can be seen to be quite destructive in as far as process. However, it can be said that the passive/ aggressive nature of the paintings lends themselves to the very nature of the human condition. His outcomes strive to question and reinvigorate the subject; its historical and contemporary context, together with consolidating ideas of deconstruction; an act of taking apart
and rebuilding. This may also highlight the deconstruction of conventions and what is expected from representational painting. Reynolds states: “We are all human. We all experience various happenings within our life-time; good and bad. Yet, we all bare the marks of these experiences, even if they are not all visible. Those experiences drive us forward; we evolve with change. We grow through knowledge pasted on by others and from our own involvements with life. Particular events may mark us and have a lasting effect, which we assimilate into our life. It is only upon reflection that we become aware of how and why these happenings and influences shape the way we are.”
Struggle - Francis Reynolds
Portrait for NHS Heroes initiated by Artist Tom Croft At the height of the pandemic, Francis offered NHS key-workers a free portrait; an initiative created by Tom Croft that recognised the considerable efforts of NHS staff. He produced three portraits and all were gratefully received.

PROJECT
Reach Out Beyond - Francis Reynolds
The project for this month is something started byJake Parker to get people drawing, and has grown to a worldwide movement. It’s called Inktober and gives you 31 titles, one for every day of October. You don’t have to do them all, you don’t have to do them in ink, just a doodle is fine or in any media you choose, if you like what you’ve done, you can post on social media with a hashtag. There’s also a website for inspiration. I’ve added a couple of pictures from last year, by some Hampton College pupils and me. https://inktober.com/

We are so pleased to have welcomed back all of our children for a new and exciting year, albeit a slightly different one! During the months of lockdown we were so pleased to hear from so many children of the wonderful things they were learning, creating and doing with their families. Some of my favourite pictures sent in were from our Sunflower Competition, they certainly brightened up my day! We also had two sisters from reception and Year 2 who rode 50 miles each in June alone. What an achievement!
In school, we decided to make the most of the lockdown time to not only write a brand new curriculum for our children but also to create some amazing learning spaces in school. We transformed an unused breakout area into our new Wonderland Reading Area. The area will be used by all children in school (after social distancing) to share a story and develop not only their reading skills but also their love of reading. Wonderland is filled with a huge amount of new and exciting books for the children to choose from and also offers audio books, Kindles, a TV to watch authors read their own stories and an iPad corner for children to record their own book reviews. We hope that the children love using the area as much as we enjoyed creating it for them. It is amazing how many creative and talented staff we have in school!

Love Thy Tailor
Most people think tailors are for rich gentlemen who frequent Saville Row, but tailoring is not as expensive as you might think, and it will save you money in the long run because if you love an item of clothing you're far less likely to replace it. At the low-price end are simple fixes such as hemming a dress or trousers; at the more expensive end will be adjusting the shoulders of a jacket. By Tracey Anderson
Tailoring opens up possibilities because it allows you to buy high-quality second-hand items, or designer items on the sale rack, knowing you can get the fit altered. Most importantly it helps your clothes look better than they did when you bought them. A slight change in fit can make a huge difference. Unless you habitually buy 'bespoke', clothing is sized in a 'good enough' way to fit most people well enough. Tailoring is the difference between an item that fits 'well enough' and one that fits perfectly.
Simple Hemming You can get skirts, trousers, jeans, dresses, and too-long shirts hemmed. When you get rid of the excess fabric at the base, you get clean lines for a sleek look. Wash new jeans before you take them in though as they nearly always shrink a little in the wash.
Shortening Shoulder Straps The way the shoulders fit is crucial to making an item look nice overall. If the shoulder straps on a shirt or dress won’t stay up, get them shortened. Anything sleeveless, or with straps is typically easy to alter.
Zip Replacement Buy exactly what you want from the haberdashery section of a fabric store and ask the tailor to replace it.
18
Taking in The straight seams that run down the sides of shirts and dresses are easy to take in. A common alteration to blouses and dress shirts is darting, a process where extra seams are placed in the back or sides of a shirt to remove baggy fabric. If you find that you frequently have to size up a blouse to fit your chest properly - leaving extra fabric around your waist darting is an inexpensive way to reshape the garment. Sleeves also tend to have straight seams running down their lengths, which a tailor can easily take in. The same works for trousers that are too loose in the leg. There is a limit though: if something is several sizes too big the alterations will throw the proportions out of balance, but a size or two is doable.
When shopping: Clothing sizing for women is so variable as to be useless. Try things on, find the best fit, then have them tailored. Buy clothes that fit the biggest or widest part of your body, and then have them tailored down If you are between sizes, size up and tailor down. Ask for a recommendation. Social media is a great tool. If you admire the way a friend dresses, they may well have a tailor and will be flattered that you asked. Highend and designer shops may be able to recommend tailors too.

My experience has taught me that healthy skin and nails are paramount. I assess these elements in order to ascertain their health first and then I can recommend the
correct treatment or products to enhance what nature gave us. I understand that getting to know my clients through friendly communication during treatments is vitally important. This allows me to understand their work, home and social lives, which gives me information from which I can personalize the treatment for the client, rather than just toes, fingers or
lashes! The personal touch is essential in my salon. I like to think that a welcoming and professional salon is somewhere I would want to visit myself. In these challenging and unsettling times, I know how hard it has been for everyone, which has made me realise how important routines, families and friends are. To be able to see and hear loved ones and keep communicating with them has been essential, especially for those who live alone, the elderly and widowed. During the past few months, I have been keeping in contact with my most socially isolated clients, giving them a call to check in on them and having a general catch up. I may have been one of the few people they saw regularly before lockdown and interaction has an enormous positive impact on their welfare. I hope it helped, and as a beauty therapist I missed seeing my clients so much. Now I am open again and able to offer a full range of treatments. For your peace of mind I have become certified in Covid-19 infection, prevention and control, so, my clients can be confident that I will take all necessary steps and precautions required to keep them safe during their visit to the salon.
Along with my OPI Gel manicure and pedicures, waxing, tinting, shaping, LVL lash treatment and spray tans, I also offer tailored discount packages for holidays and special occasions, such as weddings and prom nights etc. These are very popular treatments to have before that special event. As a 'thank you' for customer loyalty, I have a loyalty card scheme which gives clients money off future treatments. I have monthly special offers on treatments, details of which can be found on my website, Instagram or Facebook or for those old school clients, a text message! Gift vouchers are always very popular and can come as a monetary amount or a special treatment(s). All my gift vouchers come with a hand-painted watercolour greeting card. These cards are ideal presents, so with Christmas fast approaching, spread the word or drop huge hints to husbands or partners, or even children. Best of all, no wrapping needed! Finally, as a 'thank you' to our amazing NHS and key staff workers, I will continue to offer a discount for their first visit to WOW Beauty. Love Lisa, WOW Beauty…

Physiotherapy & Breast Cancer Awareness Month It is October – the month of early evenings, sweet treats, and beautiful leaf colours. But it is also Breast Cancer Awareness Month, so the question is how 'breast aware' are you? Breast cancer is one of the most commonly diagnosed cancers in the UK and can occur in both men and women, but the good news is that more people than ever before can now be successfully treated through surgery, radiotherapy and chemotherapy. Many patients will need surgery, some even needing a mastectomy (removal of the breast) but that is not the end of the journey as some people then opt to proceed to have breast reconstruction surgery. Physiotherapy plays a pivotal role in recovery after breast cancer surgery as rehabilitative treatment is needed in these patients to ensure that they fully regain the movement and function of their arm. Breast surgery often extends into the armpit and therefore affects their shoulder range of movement. PHYSIOTHERAPY | ACUPUNCTURE | HEALTH | WELLNESS

The reconstruction may involve taking one of the big back muscles (latissimus dorsi, or lats) and twisting it around to then create the shape needed for reconstructive breast surgery. This results in scarring, pain, and the obvious problem of a missing back muscle so that the
other remaining muscles need specific rehabilitation so make up for the loss of strength and stability as a consequence having reduced functionality in the lats. Research has shown that early appropriate physiotherapy after breast surgery helps improve arm mobility, reduces pain, and decreases the risk of developing post-op lymphoedema. Potential problems that patients may develop after surgery are reduced movements and/or strength in the arm, cording (inflammation of the lymph vessels), backache, pain, poor posture and reduced overall upper limb function. Physiotherapists also play a major role in health promotion, so I go back to my original question: how “aware” are you? Breast Cancer Awareness Month is about educating people to become breast aware so that they become familiar with what is normal for themselves and are therefore able to detect changes swiftly. Reassuringly, most changes turn out not to be breast cancer, but for those who are affected, the earlier it is detected the more effective treatment is.

Give your health and wellness a kickstart! One of the things we love most about CBD is its ability to work in so many different ways. It’s what’s known as a pleiotropic - something which produces many different effects through various molecular pathways, activating or binding to multiple receptors throughout the body. Essentially, this means that it goes where it’s needed and supports your body in regaining equilibrium.

However much we love CBD and all it has to give, this isn’t the only plant which holds this particular remarkable ability of changing to suit your needs. There are other botanicals which, just like hemp, have been used since records began to enhance and maintain wellness in this same, holistic way. They’re called adaptogens and you’ll find them featured in the hapi hemp CBD Superfood Mix.
What are adaptogens?
There are a select few herbs and mushrooms in the world which fall into this special category. Just like CBD, they work to bring the body back into balance, perhaps by calming a stress response, boosting energy, lowering inflammation or even enhancing mental performance. Most impressively, adaptogens can possess opposing qualities at the same time (for example acting as a stimulant while relaxing at the same time) if that’s what your wellbeing calls for.
Meet the hapi hemp adaptogens
Here at hapi hemp, our passion lies in nurturing your mind, body and soul through the use of the natural ingredients which endlessly defy and exceed expectations.. So today, we’d like to introduce you to the adaptogens you’ll find in our new CBD Superfood blend and why we love them:
Ashwagandha
There is evidence to show that this ancient medicinal herb has been used across continents for over four millennia for its ability to help the body cope with stress, as well as providing support to the immune, cardiovascular, the nervous and endocrine systems.
years have found it to be especially effective in stress management and hormonal regulation.
Cacao
Although cacao does have a decadent chocolate flavour, it’s a far cry from the stuff you’ll find in your local corner shop. This ingredient is revered among many cultures across the globe and is often used in ceremonial, shamanistic practice as well as in naturopathic medicine in it’s raw form, which is extremely high in antioxidants.
Turmeric
Study after study has shown the stress reliving benefits of this wonderful root to be so astounding that some ordinarily Allopathic doctors now prescribe this as a natural alternative to pharmaceutical drugs. But the benefits of Turmeric go well beyond helping you keep your cool.
Reishi Mushroom
Reishi (or Ganoderma lucidum) has been called ‘the herb of immortality’ which gives you some idea of how miraculous this adaptogen is. Grown in China, this mushroom has been used for thousands of years for a hefty list of health benefits, in particular it’s grounding effects. A regular dose of these will see you sailing through even the highest octane days and help support healthy sleep cycles too. The non-specific adaptability of these superior ingredients makes them all ideal supplements to add into any lifestyle, for an all-round balancing, stress relieving enhancement to your every day. And now you can find them all in one delicious mix, alongside a good dose of CBD, in our new CBD Superfood Blend!
The wellbeing benefits this traditional Ayurvedic herb has to give are far-reaching and, as an adaptogen, different for everyone. But many studies over the

Mums use mindfulness to tackle their lockdown challenges
Local mums are joining a ‘mindfulness club’ to help them cope with the stress and challenges of Covid-19 With attention being given to mental health created by the Covid-19 situation, mums are being invited to join a unique club focused on their wellbeing. ‘The MamaKind Club’ is the creation of Peterboroughbased mindfulness teacher, speaker, and author Amy Polly. The course that sits at the heart of the club was
“By having a better understanding of how the mind works, you can also manage your own mental chatter, creating space between your thoughts and your reactions. “Some people think mindfulness is spiritual or new age, but actually it’s really practical and something
Some people think mindfulness is spiritual or new age, but actually it’s really practical and something that anyone can do. I’m just a normal and busy person and have discovered for myself that it can make a huge difference. developed over many months and launched in April. Its focus is on teaching members the techniques of mindfulness to empower them to cope and thrive under even the toughest challenges. A mother herself, Amy turned to mindfulness when her own mental health suffered due to work and relationship stress seven years ago. Since then, she says that mindfulness has helped her through difficult life events including a miscarriage, the complicated birth of her son and post-natal anxiety. Her belief that mindfulness is for everyone led Amy to create a club accessible to any mum who wants to give it a try. During lockdown, she has also been offering free sessions to key workers in the NHS, fire service and police. Amy says: “At times like this, knowing how to use mindfulness can prove incredibly effective. It is about learning to pay attention to the moment, instead of always thinking about past events or worrying about the future. It helps you to feel calmer and have more clarity about what is important.
that anyone can do. I’m just a normal and busy person and have discovered for myself that it can make a huge difference.” Club members are getting help with their general mental health, as well as Covid-19 challenges such as isolation, home schooling and home working. A theme cropping up as lockdown eases is that mums who have struggled to combine full time childcare with other responsibilities now have children at home through the summer holidays.
About Amy Polly Amy Polly is founder of The MamaKind Club, which is a finalist in the new business category at the 2020 Peterborough Small Business Awards. Amy has spoken at local and national wellbeing events and contributed articles to a number of magazines. She has also been a guest on several podcasts, including the popular ‘Mums in Business’ with Leona Burton and ‘The Positive Wellbeing Podcast for Mums’ from Isabella & Us. Amy now has her own podcast which launched recently with Hollyoaks actress Ali Bastian as her first guest, reaching number 5 in the parenting category above Stacey Soloman’s ‘Here we go Again’. Amy also has thousands of Instagram followers.
Club members work through an eight-week online course. Live video training and guided meditations are blended with activities, an online community, and one-to-one sessions with Amy. Feedback left by club members on social media and review platforms has been positive, with some reporting that it has helped them cope with the pandemic despite existing anxiety and depression. Another says that Amy is ‘putting something wonderful out into the world’.
More information is at www.themindkindclub.com/aboutmamakind and the next MamaKind Club course begins in October.

business focus PECT selected as a key delivery partner in Eastern New Energy Programme – supporting businesses across the East of England The environmental charity PECT has become a key partner in the Eastern New Energy (ENE) programme, which launches this month. The project is part-funded by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) and led by the University of East London, with a wider partnership comprising 23 organisations. The aim of the project is to build a stronger and locally focused low carbon economy in the region. It will achieve this by providing support to a range of individuals and organisations, and by understanding and addressing the barriers to the decarbonization of communities, buildings, transport, and lives. PECT’s role will be to provide grants to eligible small and medium-sized businesses in Cambridgeshire and Hertfordshire, to help catalyse capital investments in energy efficiency initiatives. The longterm organisational benefits to participating businesses include reduced operating costs, increased
competitiveness, business growth and resilience. “The health and sustainability of our environment has never been so critical than at this time. The climate crisis we are facing has been further exacerbated by the economic, health and social challenges created by Covid-19,” explains PECT’s CEO Carly Leonard. “This is a time of great uncertainty for our region’s businesses, and we want to support them to build resilience and longterm stability for a sustainable future.” “We are delighted to be involved with this project, because our team has the unique opportunity to assist businesses wanting to focus on
energy efficiency initiatives. Through its grant funding, ENE can help organisations to save money and incorporate sustainability into their operational plans.” The PECT project team brings together a wealth of knowledge and experience in this field. The organisation previously supported over 270 businesses and identified £1,400,000 of cost savings and 6,500 tonnes of carbon savings that could be realised through recommended actions, through the Business Energy Efficiency programme. Professor Darryl Newport, the ENE Project Lead Academic from University of East (UEL), comments:
“The Eastern New Energy Project will help us to understand and remove the barriers that prevent us rapidly decarbonising our communities, buildings, transport and lives. In order to achieve our goal, we need strong regional partners like PECT who have a complete understanding of the challenges and the expertise to help unlock these barriers. We look forward to working with the team at PECT to help make the region an exemplar for the UK.” The ENE project has received funding from the England European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) as part of the European Structural and Investment Funds Growth Programme 2014-2020.
If you are a small or medium sized business in the region who would like to find out more about receiving a grant, call 01733 882549, email ene@pect.org.uk or visit www.pect.org.uk/projects/ene

Beware of false Trademark Registrations Taylor Rose TTKW's Corporate & Commercial Solicitor, Faris Dean, explains why buyers should be beware of false Trademark registrations. We act for clients in advising on intellectual property protection and value preservation. As part of our work, we often deal with the registration of trademarks. One of the important things to look out for is that after obtaining registration, it is often the case that our clients receive numerous correspondence from companies claiming to deal with registration of the trademark in other countries and in Europe. These companies often correspond by sending what appears to be an invoice; but contained in the small print is a disclaimer stating ‘it isn’t a request for payment’. It is sometimes the case that businesses make the payment, mistakenly believing they have to do so as part of the registration process.
This is why we advise businesses to engage our services to make sure that, not only the registration is carried-out properly, our clients have the benefit of our experience in these peripheral issues around the registration process. There is well established intellectual property law in the United Kingdom and in Europe. Trademark or logo registration being one of these (such the registered logos of McDonald’s and Mercedes-Benz). These trademarks can be protected through registration with official intellectual property registers. Two possible options is registration as a UK Trademark or as a Europe wide Community Trade Mark. The trademark registration serves as a warning for other businesses not to use the trademark without getting
permission from the owner first. It also helps owners enforce legal claims against a business which infringes their trademark by unauthorised use. Once a trademark is registered, it can actually turn out to be an asset for a business (depending on how much value is created in it). As an asset, it can be sold or licensed, thereby generating its own income for the business. With the current Brexit negotiations ongoing, it is important for businesses to keep a regular review of their intellectual property, to make sure they continue to protect the value in them. Faris practices as a Corporate & Commercial Solicitor and has over 15 years of experience advising and acting for business clients. His ethos is to provide services to clients which
surpass a good service, by adding value, with the intention of achieving an excellent client service. He is able to do so, by utilising his dual accountancy qualification (as a qualified Chartered Certified Accountant, since 2008) and his previous experience in audit and business, gained from auditing clients’ financial statements, working in two of the Big 4 Global Accountancy Firms. Faris works within our Commercial Team acting for national and international clients. One of his specialist international regions is the Gulf States and wider Middle East. Faris can add value to his client legal services, by utilising his bilingual Arabic/English language and knowledge of the business culture of that region.
If you would like to discuss protecting the value in your intellectual property, then contact me at faris.dean@taylor-rose.co.uk.

legallybinding Cohabitation
“There is no such thing as a common law marriage” Quite right! Despite numerous attempts to persuade Parliament to make legal reforms, an unmarried couple who live together, even with children, do not have the rights or protection they would have from a marriage (or a civil partnership).
“Prevention is better than cure” This is certainly the case with cohabiting couples. It may seem too business like to take precautions against future problems but having a Cohabitation Agreement in place can certainly provide peace of mind in a happy relationship. This is especially so if your home is only owned by one of you, or one of you invested more into your property than the other. A Cohabitation Agreement can be as wide ranging or limited as you wish, dealing with issues concerning property, contributions to living expenses, investments, debts, items of value and your children. You will be advised at the same time as signing up to a Cohabitation Agreement to ensure that your Will is up to date and consistent with the terms of the Agreement. It may be that you will need advice concerning a Trust Deed for the property you both live or are planning to buy which will make specific who owns what proportion and the terms of continuing residence. We can put you in touch with speciality legal advisors in those areas for a comprehensive cohabitation package to anticipate any eventualities.
Cohabitation Splits In the absence of any prior Cohabitation Agreement the breakdown of a cohabiting relationship can lead to a number of problems that we can help you with. Your rights and responsibilities concerning your children are not very different for parents who live together or are married parents. Your rights to shared property and money are different and can often prove to be a legal minefield. Resorting to court proceedings to resolve cohabitation disputes is to be avoided if at all possible. We will advise you how best to achieve this, whilst ensuring that your interests are protected.

Making Tax Digital Making Tax Digital (MTD) will apply from April 2022 to all UK VAT registered businesses regardless of their turnover and to certain business income tax records from April 2023. HMRC have announced that Making Tax Digital (MTD) is to be extended to cover all UK VAT registered businesses from 1 April 2022 and to cover most business income tax records from April 2023. At present the MTD rules only apply to those whose UK taxable turnover is above the £85,000 UK VAT registration threshold. MTD compliance, with its requirement for digital records and use of compatible software to submit the VAT return may be an onerous requirement for micro businesses who may have only registered for VAT voluntarily – perhaps to obtain VAT refunds or to appear larger to their customer base. However, although there was little detail in the announcement, it is likely that the option to apply to HMRC for an exemption from MTD will also be available to these smaller businesses. An exemption can be sought if it is not reasonable or practical for the business to use computers, software or the internet to follow the MTD rules. The change will impact all businesses that are voluntarily registered for UK VAT because their UK taxable turnover is under the threshold, who are not at present required to comply with MTD. If they are unable to secure an exemption, MTD compliance will require them to keep VAT records digitally and use software that is MTD compatible. Some smaller voluntarily registered businesses may decide to de-register instead of complying with MTD. De-registration can however also trigger a VAT cost due to the rules about assets and stock on hand, so advice may be needed. We understand that although MTD compliance has been generally high, a significant minority of businesses that should be using MTD are not doing so. HMRC suspended their program of encouraging such businesses to comply for a few months due to COVID-19, but recently began it again. It appears that a major reason for non-compliance has been a misunderstanding - just submitting VAT returns online is not enough to be MTD compliant. The announcement of the extension in scope has fortunately been made well in advance, so affected businesses can think about what they want to do, weigh up the pros and cons of staying VAT registered and complying with MTD, as opposed to de-registering. Alongside the update on VAT, the Government has announced that from April 2023, businesses and landlords with business income over £10,000 per annum which are liable for Income Tax, need to keep digital records and use software to update HMRC quarterly through MTD. The Government has also confirmed it will be consulting later this year on the design of what the MTD system should look like for Corporation Tax. staysafe Whether it’s ‘your bank’ asking for verification of personal details or a message to say you have won a competition prize – unwanted texts can be annoying and sometimes worrying
Stop the spam and put an end to unwanted text messages You may have received a text message that you weren’t quite sure about? Maybe it asked you to reveal personal information in order to unblock an account? While in most cases, a text message from an unknown number or source is a scam; their content or call for action can also cause upset for many people who are unaware how - or if - to respond. However, there is now a new service which allows you to report spam texts directly to your mobile phone provider. All operators now use 7726 as the short code to report spam texts, and it is free to use. All of the UK’s mobile operators worked together to deploy a tool which collates all the information from the 7726 short code in real time. This means they can take early action to block numbers that are generating spam on their networks. They can also use this information to inform the regulators. You can report spam texts directly to your mobile phone provider free of charge by forwarding the text message to 7726. But what does a messaging scam look like? While scammers are getting more cunning at making a scam message look like the real thing, there are some signs you can watch out for. Here are some great tips from Which? Unexpected contact Think about how that organisation normally contacts you and if it isn’t via a message, contact them directly to check it’s legitimate. A genuine organisation will never contact you out of the blue and ask you to verify your details, request personal or banking details or tell you to transfer money via a message. If in doubt, contact the organisation using a number you’ve found independently of the message. Check for spelling or grammar errors Genuine organisations will rarely, if ever, make glaring spelling mistakes or grammatical errors, and if so, it will usually be an isolated incident. If the message doesn’t look professional, it’s probably a scam - even if it drops into a message chain from your bank. Don’t follow any links If you follow a link in the message, it could send you to an imposter website set up to steal your money or personal data. In some cases it could even infect your smartphone with malware.
