Salon Director’s Charity Cycle Salon director Kai Wan recently fundraised for charity, cycling on the Prudential Ride London to Surrey. Kai aimed to raise £650 and has so far exceeded that target with a staggering £790 for Cancer Research UK. Kai explained that his motivation came from meeting so many people in his hairdressing work who have been affected by cancer, either themselves, or a loved one or friend. “Just last year I remember doing a last hair style for a sufferer who wanted to look great in her last days. This year a couple of friends have lost their two year old and more recently a close and lovely friend and mum of two lost her battle to this disease, which really affected us. I really want to do as much as I can to help Cancer Research UK develop more cures.” If you wish to help Kai’s cause, please visit www.justgiving.com/kai-wan/

Christ the Servant King

The Parish Church of Hampton

Hampton News

On Saturday morning the 20th July 2013 the Bishop of Ely and the Bishop of Peterborough joined members of the community to turn the first soil at the Groundbreaking Ceremony of CSK Church. On Monday the 8th September at 7:30pm the two Bishops will return to Hampton for the dedication service. It will be an evening where we will celebrate and give thanks. As Autumn begins, there will be more activity within the walls. Community groups will start meeting in the hall in September with a pre-school planning to begin in October. We are still in the process of fitting out our coffee shop/café and hope to have news to share with you soon on when this will be opening. The church office should start to have regular opening hours during October.

Invitation

We are so very grateful for our new building, but we are mindful that the church is the people who gather in it, not the building itself. As a church we hope that we will always be known as people who share the love of Christ in our actions and our words. We have been asking people who have attended our Sunday Morning service at 10am to complete a questionnaire as we are keen to offer services of different styles and at the times that will meet the communities needs. We will begin to respond to those requests during the Autumn, beginning with a mid-week Holy Communion service. If you haven’t yet been inside the new building, please do feel very welcome to come and join us any Sunday morning at 10am. We look forward to meeting you.

Courier Fraud If you haven’t heard of the ‘Courier Fraud’ yet, please read this and share with others.

Courier frauds are becoming more prevalent and sophisticated. Usually the elderly are targeted. Scammers will telephone a potential victim purporting to be from their bank, from the police or other law enforcement authority. They then dupe the person into revealing their PIN and handing over their debit or credit card.

We can carry out a wide range of services around your home. • Repair work • General maintenance • Decorating • Gardening/Fencing • Hedge cutting • Light plumbing • Furniture assembly/Flatpack We can help you by putting up shelves, changing light fittings, changing locks plus so much more...

Consumer Advice

by Eileen Le Voi, Safe Local Trades

T: 01733 242670 M: 07867 523923

What you should know A scammer rings you, claiming to be from your Bank or the Police, saying a fraudulent payment has been spotted on your card and this needs resolving, or that someone has been arrested using your details and cards. You may be asked to ring back using the phone number on the back of your card. This further convinces you that the call is genuine. However, the scammer keeps the line open at their end so, when you make the call, you are unknowingly connected straight back to them or their friends. They will ask you for your PIN number or sometimes ask you to key it into your phone’s handset. YOU SHOULD NEVER GIVE YOUR PIN TO ANYONE IN ANY WAY. The scammer then sends a courier or taxi to pick up your card from your home. If is possible the driver does not know they are being used as part of the scam. Once they have your card and PIN the scammer can then spend your money. There are many variations to this scam, one of which is where the scammer requests you to assist in a police investigation by asking you to go to your bank, withdraw a large sum of cash and take this home, where it will be collected by a courier or taxi driver.

Prevention Advice If you receive a call like this, hang up the phone. In order to clear your line from the scammer, wait at least 5 minutes before making any calls. DO NOT hand over any money as a result of this type of phone call.

Please be aware of the following Your bank or the police will NEVER ring you and tell you that they are coming to your home to pick up your card, so never hand it over to anyone who comes to collect it. Your bank will NEVER ask you to authorise anything by entering your PIN into the telephone. NEVER share your PIN with anyone – the only times you should use your PIN is at a cash machine or when you use a chip and PIN machine.

If you think you have been a victim of this scam, please telephone the police on 101.

Replacement Seating The Parish Council is delighted that O & H, Hampton have given their support to a programme to replace the seating in Hampton that has been vandalised or is simply worn out!

CloseConnections CloseConnections commenced in 2005 and several couples who met through the group remain together.

In order to prioritise the order that replacement seating will be installed (at a rate of five seats per year) the Parish Council are asking residents to send in details of the seats that thy feel need replacing. Just let us know by email or on Facebook by the end of September 2014 where the seat is that you want replacing, preferably with a photograph of the damaged seat/location of the missing seat and all of the nominations will be collated to create a list of seating needed. If there are more than five ‘nominations’ for this year details of each location and the photograph provided will be posted on Facebook for a residents vote. hamptonparishcouncil@gmail.com

A Better Way to Divorce In these times of credit crunch and recession the do it yourself divorce is becoming increasingly popular. You can even download the divorce forms from the internet. But beware! Filing the Divorce Petition is one thing, sorting out the financial arrangements is another. Quantifying and sharing the matrimonial assets is a skilled and often complex tax, which a family lawyer is best equipped to undertake. “You would say that wouldn’t you!” – lawyers don’t want to lose business to the layman. Fair enough, but the warning is genuine. Lawyers are frequently faced with the situation where a couple have already divided some of the assets – usually the family home – and filed for divorce, but left other aspects unresolved.

Mummy Maids

We don’t just clean... We do chores!

• All household chores • Deep cleans

Not only do we provide domestic household cleaning, but we do all those daily chores that build up too... making your life easier at the end of a hard day.

• Light cleans • Regular service or a ‘one off ’ • Take away laundry and ironing service

Email: mummymaidsuk@gmail.com

Valuing a business, sharing pensions, assessing contributions to investments and debts can all be problematic and if done piecemeal (sometimes years apart) make it very difficult to reach a fair outcome when you reach the point of wanting a clean break. And remember, although you may have the decree absolute in the divorce, a former spouse can still make an application for a financial settlement (provided he or she hasn’t remarried) at any future date. So it’s worth investing in professional advice from the early stages – it can save, or earn, you a lot more at the end of the day!

Guides and Brownies give girls aged 7 to 14 new experiences and builds their confidence. We are a unique, girl only space where girls can be themselves and try new things. We have fun whilst encouraging them to challenge themselves and discover their full potential.

From the beginning of September there will be some changes of staff at Hampton Health. After 8 years at the practice Dr Holmes is moving on to pursue other interests, and we have 2 new GPs joining the Practice. They are Dr Imran Hameed, who has been working with us as a locum over the past few months, and Dr Inga Moon. Both will be working 3 days a week. For their full details please see our website.

Guiding in Hampton is very popular, so we’re looking for adults to become Guide, Brownie or Rainbow leaders or unit helpers, to enable more girls to have the chance to participate. If you’re interested, visit www.girlguiding.org. uk/get_involved or call Helen on 01733 240804

Whilst this will mean that there will be more appointments available we are still working with a company called ‘Productive Primary Care’ to identify a better solution, however we are not planning any major changes in the near future. Work on obtaining a new building for the practice continues. We are still waiting for the ‘go ahead’ to start the development and will keep you informed so look out for any updates on the website. Finally flu vaccinations for all eligible patients will be available in the practice from the end of September. No clinic dates have been set up yet, but we will let you know details in the next issue, or you can check at the practice or on the website www.hamptonhealth.co.uk Facebook “f ” Logo

Schools

Hampton College, Primary Phase Youngsters of Hampton College, Primary Phase recently tested out their new hi-vis jackets on a recent outing to Hammerton Zoo. Retail Director Steve Emmingham of Specsavers Optical Group presented Headmaster, Paul Jones of Hampton College Primary Phase with 120 hi-vis jackets for all the children and some adults.

“

It is particularly dangerous at the time of the year when school run takes place in the dark. With Primary Phase of Hampton College being new, we thought they probably would not have any hi-vis jackets. Mr Emmingham

“

Headmaster Paul Jones commented on the ease of keeping the children together as they mixed with children from other schools during their trip to the zoo. The jackets were supplied free of charge to keep the children safe from traffic in Hampton, which can be chaotic at school times.

Schools

Hampton Vale School The new school year at Hampton Vale Primary School has seen staff and children there welcome their new Foundation Stage children, some children in other year groups and some new members of staff to the team. They are all looking forward to exciting learning events and activities for a number of new themes that each year group will be introducing this year. While they are looking forward to their new school year, many of the children have also been remembering the school’s celebration evening in mid-July that was one of the key events to mark the end of the previous year. The evening saw some children in each year group receive awards for their effort, achievement and progress in their learning; awards were also presented to children who consistently demonstrated the school’s Values and who had achieved 100 per cent attendance in the year. Current Year One children have also been remembering one of the final events - an adventure day at Ferry Meadows - that they took part at the end of their time in the Early Years Foundation Stage in July. After setting up their base camp at Coney Meadow, the children developed their teamwork skills by den building, playing ball games and painting with watercolours. As for all of the school’s visits and trips, the support from parents, who accompanied the children and helped them as they took part in their activities, was invaluable.

Hampton Sport

Hampton Netball wins all round at Wisbech Summer Netball Tournament Busy summer for Hampton Football Club Ladies team Hampton Football Club Under-18 Ladies team have had a busy summer, which included securing a substantial sponsorship deal and have participated in National and International Tournaments as part of their pre-season schedule. Fenland First Aid Services have kitted the whole team with playing kit, training kit and warm up tops, all displaying the clubs new badge and the Fenland First Aid Services logo. This is just the start of the relationship and they will also be providing the club with some First Aid Training, First Aid Kit and will be providing First Aid cover for the clubs next tournament. At the beginning of July the ladies represented Peterborough in the ACES National Championships, which allows the most successful teams from each county in England to compete for National honours. The ladies finished a very respectable 3rd, facing oppositions from as far as Brighton and Newcastle along the way. They then jetted off to Oslo to compete in the Norway Cup, which saw 1560 teams from across the globe visit Norway to compete in the world largest Youth Football tournament. Only elite teams are considered for entry and over 100 teams were selected at their age group. After five days of football the girls end the week ranked 9th with only professional academy teams finishing ahead of them.

For the first time Hampton Netball Club entered four teams into the Wisbech Summer League junior tournament in July. Panthers entered at U16s (their final junior tournament), Leopards and Pumas entered at U14s and our newly formed Jaguars entered the Year 7s group.

Leopards Availability of players meant that Leopards had to borrow Phoebe from Pumas and also bring in a guest player Georgia. Despite having never played with either of these two, Leopards had some excellent matches, they worked incredibly hard as a team and were encouraging throughout. They played an impressive standard of netball and were rightly the winners of the U14’s. Congratulations also to Martha who was the most nominated ‘Player of the Match’ during the recent U16 Wisbech league.

Pumas

For the 2014/15 season the team will be competing for four pieces of silverware including the Eastern Region Champions League and Women’s Junior Invitation Cup.

Pumas started the day with having to lend one of their shooters to Leopards but despite that they had a fantastic tournament, coming 3rd to Leopards and Rookies, but being the only team not to lose to Leopards which was an excellent achievement. The whole team were very strong from the defence who worked so hard to prevent any ball getting to the opposing shooters and to the attack who’s passing was fast and accurate with shooting that was impressive. The level of netball on show was a credit to them all.

Most teams at the club are now full, but there are a couple of places left at U12 and U16 level and you will find more details on the clubs website at www.hamptonfc.co.uk

Congratulations to Pumas who came runners up in the recent U13’s Wisbech Summer league (by goal difference only)

On the final day of their trip, they played a testimonial game for Millie Hopkisson, who will be moving to an FA Centre of Excellence in Lincoln next season. The girls played Tromsdalen UIL from the North of Norway and before the game both teams signed a Hampton FC pennant that was presented to Millie at the end of the game.

At recent ceremony held at the Hampton Community Sports Association three people were recognised for their leadership and contribution to the Friday Night project.

Tommy Abbott

Students Luke Barns and Tommy Abbott were recognised for their leadership and commitment to the Friday night project over the last two years. This included volunteering, mentoring and participating in community work supporting the lead coach Chas Ryan and PCSO Igor Simonov deliver the project to young people in the community. Sadegh Akbarabady a volunteer coach who has been coaching young people within the project and acting as a role model for young people to follow received an award.

Panthers

Jaguars Jaguars had to bring in a guest player Jessica who proved to be an excellent addition to this very new but very strong Year 7 team. Due to availability of players a couple of girls were playing out of position but no one would have noticed. This was great netball, passes were accurate and not rushed, the girls were using the whole court and playing netball that you would not expect at this age group. They came an impressive 2nd to Rookies, being beaten by goal difference only, and that being a difference of only 1 goal!

The project has been sponsored by Hampton Parish Council and is a joint programme between Hampton Police and Hampton Community Sports Association. Chas Ryan UEFA B lead coach and Chair HCSA said I am delighted that Luke, Tommy and Abs have been recognised for their hard work and will drive forward opportunities for others to follow. All awards were presented by Inspector Bartlett Hampton Police and congratulated by Kate Day Clerk Hampton Parish Council.

Tommy Abbott - In recognition of Tommy’s Leadership and commitment to making Friday night sports a success, and his vast improvement as a sportsman and a role model for his peers.

With Beth picking up an ankle injury in the first half of the second match it was obvious she was in a great deal of pain, but with guts and determination she continued to play (and no one was going to tell her otherwise) and helped Panthers secure a place in the final against Rookies. An exciting match that saw Panthers take a convincing lead in the first half. However, Rookies improved their game in the second half and closed the gap a little. With time running out, Rookies were unable to equal the score and the match ended 8 - 6 to Panthers making them U16’s Tournament Winners!

Luke Barns - In recognition of Luke’s Leadership and commitment to making Friday night sports a success, and his positive attitude towards the community and helping create a more inclusive Hampton

Living in Hampton

Outdoor treasure hunts for today’s digital generation: try the geocaching craze on Hampton Question: what’s fun for all ages, happening all around Hampton, and free to join in? Answer: geocaching – or to give it a more friendly sound, outdoor treasure hunting using your phone, tablet or GPS. What’s involved?

How far do I have to go?

A geocache or ‘cache’ is a small waterproof treasure box hidden outdoors. Your challenge is to find it using co-ordinates and clues and a special app on your smart phone – or, if you have one – a GPS.

Geocaching is a great way to explore your own neighbourhood and you’ll find plenty of caches in and around Hampton. As well as individual caches Hampton features on a number of treasure trails: on www.geocaching.com enter your postcode and look out for these trails which feature a number of caches leading on to each other:

Each treasure box has a log inside for you to sign, showing you’ve been there. If the cache is part of a longer treasure trail, you may also find clues to where to go next. And if you’re lucky you may find a box with real ‘treasure in’ – a selection of trinkets left by others from which you can choose something to take away as your reward, as long as you leave your own swap in return.

Sounds fun – how do I get started? 1. Download an introductory geocaching app to your phone or mobile device. A good place to start is Geocaching Intro app, available free for both iPhone and Android phones. Another good caching app is Garmin OpenCaching, also free for both types of mobile.

6. Log your find on www.opencaching.com, and pick your next one!

TTT – the Team Twitter Trail follows the Peterborough Green Wheel cycle network

Crown Lakes – a series of caches on a circuit of about 2 miles and will take you around an hour to complete

There’s plenty more information, including do’s, don’ts and geocaching etiquette on the website www.geocaching.com

3. Choose a cache and enter the co-ordinates into the GPS app on your mobile

5. Fill out the log book and return the cache to its hiding place

Hampton Wonder – a series around Hampton and a good place to begin

Anything else I need to know?

2. Find a cache using the app or, for a bigger choice, go to www.geocaching.com (you will need to sign up but it’s free to do so)

4. Follow your GPS towards the spot - then use your wits to find it

If you get hooked and want to set your own cache it’s essential you use the website to get familiar with the rules first. As owners of most of the open space in Hampton O&H welcome geocachers to use our land so long as you do so responsibly – and as a courtesy let us know what you’re doing. Kids' Only! Riddles

(Answers

So, what is there to do in Hampton for kids? Probably more than you think... For young children, there is nothing quite better than an afternoon at the park, and Hampton has quite a lot to offer youngsters. From quiet play areas for very little children right through to rip-roaring adventures for those children who are growing up fast. One of these adventurous areas is situated next door to the tump in Hampton Hargate. This area offers children an adrenaline thrilled rush down the exciting zipline, definitely one of the best in Peterborough! Once you are finished with that, the often unnoticed park near the back of Tesco offers thrill seekers the chance to experience Hampton’s largest slide, definitely something to keep an eye out for next time your out and about.

For younger children a brand new park has just been built next door to the main entrance of Serpentine Green, just a stones throw away from the large collection of shops as well as Dinky Doughnuts. However, there is always room for expansion and the new gym area next to Hampton College as well as the up and coming Skate Park shows Hampton is booming and definitely delivering! The men’s collection includes smart designs from Timberland and Tommy Hilfiger and more. All sunglasses come with standard pentax single vision lenses and a scratch-resistant treatment. Whether you’re chilling at the beach or driving home from the office in the summer sunshine, there’s something for everybody. Alan Butler, who wears glasses daily, recently tried out Specsavers new range for the first time and was delighted with his experience and purchase, boasting good value for money, appealing brands and excellent service. He said: “Having prescription sunglasses is particularly useful when driving. I’m unable to wear contacts, so having sunglasses that are also prescription is important and has become a necessity. I couldn’t do without them.” He continued: “The optician had a great deal of knowledge on the products and I switched to Polaroid glasses also which has made a massive difference – the best ones I have bought.” 32

Dog Incontinence A doggy problem that is more common than you think…and that your vet may be able to treat. Incontinence is one of those subjects that many avoid talking about, however it is a relatively common problem, especially in older dogs and a variety of factors can contribute to it. If your dog suffers from involuntary loss of urine they will be just as, if not more, embarrassed than you are by the puddles on the floor, carpets or in bedding, as well as the unpleasant odour. They may also experience scalding of the skin from prolonged contact with the urine and an increased risk of urinary tract, bladder and kidney infections. There are many causes of incontinence, but the good news is that help is at hand, because in a vast majority of cases incontinence is very treatable. If your dog is leaving a few drops to a big puddle - get in touch with your local Vet. They will be able to assess your dog and run tests if necessary to rule out other possible causes such as; inflammation of the bladder, excess pressure on the bladder from obesity or behavioural problems. An important distinguishing feature of urinary incontinence, is the fact that this leaking is not under conscious control and the dog is not aware it is happening. So while causes are being investigated by your Vet, try to be patient and remember that incontinence really isn’t something your dog can help and any form of negative reaction should be avoided in response to spillages, to avoid further stress to your pet. As for what to expect treatment wise, it may be as simple to resolve as using a daily medication, weight control or in rarer instances, a surgical procedure may be required. As with any long term condition, treatment plans are always tailored to your dog and monitored closely to ensure continued optimum response to treatments.
