Hello and welcome to the September issue of the Hampton Gazette. It has been a busy summer in Hampton with many events and activities happening ... and it's not over just yet! Inside this issue you will find all the information you need on the forthcoming Hampton Festival which promises to be a fantastic community event for everyone to enjoy. A huge thanks goes to two young local people; Jamie Cooke and Jon Pearson, who both undertook their work experience with the Hampton Gazette, part of which was looking into the local walks in Hampton and writing an article to give our readers the opportunity to explore them without getting lost! Until next month, and the team

The Summer holidays haven't slowed our Tiddlers down! We are one of the few groups that continue to hold sessions out of term time. In fact, we only close on bank holidays! Last month our volunteers came up with some creatively fun crafts that even had the adults wanting to give it a go ... rainbow rain complete with clouds, cute pom pom caterpillars and arty peg dragonflies! We had a great time at Hunstanton (Sunny Hunny) playing in the sand and running away from the waves, not to mention exploring the fishy delights of Sealife. For some of our Tiddlers it was a first, and all those lovely sensations inspired peals of delight! The very popular Story Circle with Tom from Eastern Angles was back, enchanting our Tiddlers! We also had music/song sessions last month, namely Music for Little People and Boogizoo. We shall have more music based sessions in the following two months and would like to thank Cambridge Community Foundation who has funded them. In very exciting news we would like to announce that we have been accredited Five Star Focus by Peterborough Council for Voluntary Service! And we are proud to be the first organisation to gain this award in Peterborough! Finally, we will be taking part in the Big Macmillan Coffee Morning on 29 September. Remember to bring some pennies along to the session as there will be lots of lovely scrummy cake to be eaten! We are looking for volunteers who can help twice a month. Could you go for 30 days without complaining? It’s pretty hard to do that - and if we failed, we’d feel tempted to complain it was just too hard anyway! So how about putting a positive spin on it…could you go for 30 days being thankful for something different every single day? We reckon everyone - from young to old - can do that, whether it’s something beautiful in nature, a smile from the bus driver, a coffee with a friend. What makes you thankful? That’s not to say that life is always easy; it isn’t. The letter to the Colossians is a very short bit of the Bible, and in it, its author Paul encourages his readers to be thankful no fewer than three times - and he was in prison in chains when he wrote it! Choosing to stay thankful for even the smallest thing is a choice, particularly when times are hard, but one that helps build our character and relationships. Come and visit us at our market stall at the upcoming Hampton Festival on Saturday 16 September, where, alongside free games and craft, we’ll be launching our Thankfulness Challenge. Tie a message on our tree, then take home a balloon and a card for you to fill in with your 30 days of thankfulness. We look forward to seeing pictures of your completed cards! Our prayer is that Hampton is changed as a result, as we become a thankful people. Many blessings, Rachel T: 01733 248236

No fault divorce? Sadly, this does not look as though it’s going to be happening for a while yet. The family lawyers’ national organisation Resolution has long been campaigning for Britain to get up to date with its approach to divorce, and follow the policies of many other Western jurisdictions who do not require fault to be proved to get a divorce, but nothing definite has happened yet. In fact this month has seen the introduction of a new form of divorce petition which seems to be designed to increase the hostility between separating spouses, not reduce it. You may have heard in the media that the section dealing with adultery, which is one of the five grounds for divorce, now highlights in a somewhat inflammatory manner, the choice of naming a corespondent. Although the page does state that “people do not generally name the person their spouse committed adultery with”, the possibility of doing so is made far more prominent in this new version of the petition. This underlines how important it is to seek qualified legal advice about even what should be the most straightforward part of the marital separation (never mind the complexities of marital finances) as unwittingly putting the name of the person your spouse has been unfaithful with, could cause considerable delay, extra expense, and bad feeling. Don’t cut corners, consult a family law specialist if you are considering legal proceedings in respect of your marriage.

ACTIVE HAMPTON

NEW 16S UNDER Active Hampton has recently set TEAM up a new under 16 Hampton team. They have been registered into the league for the forthcoming season in division three. The team was originally started by two aspirational young teenagers who wanted to create a team as Hampton was lacking one for their age group. Jamie and Jonathan had previously played for Riverside together when there team suddenly folded, but their passion for the game remained, so they worked together to create this team. The team has recruited some players from Division One, such as Ciaran Dane and Evan Walters, but they are still looking for more players to join, so if you are interested in a trial please email: Jonathancp2001@Gmail.com. They also have a good set of coaches and managers, one of whom coaches Peterborough United. The managers have a good reputation in the football industry. Once again they are looking forward to the upcoming season and have high hopes.

Slimmers lose over 400 stone as group celebrates year anniversary. Super slimmers in Hampton have lost a whopping 5690 lbs – that’s the equivalent of 28 baby elephants since the group launched last July!

Nat’s group is held at CSK Hampton Church every Tuesday at 5.30pm and 7.30pm. For more information or to join call Nat on 0754 010 9787.

A

ltogether the members of the Hampton Slimming World group are now 2.5 tonnes lighter than they were when Consultant Nat Fryer set it up 12 months ago. The members, who attend the group every week, follow Slimming World’s Food Optimising eating plan created by

the organisation’s team of expert nutritionists, which encourages them to fill up on satisfying foods such as pasta, rice, potatoes, lean meat and fish, pulses and fruit and vegetables. Nat says: “I’m delighted that my members have lost weight so beautifully. It has made a big

difference to their lives and to the lives of their families, and they are happier and healthier now. Slimming has never been more important. 70% of people in Peterborough are overweight or obese and I just want to help even more people to make real changes for life – there’s no better job satisfaction than that!”

LAWN CARE AT THE END OF SUMMER As we come to the end of summer there’s plenty of work still to be done on our lawns to keep them looking great in the months to come. Sisters Sarah and Jo who run our local GreenThumb lawn care business give us some top tips. Sarah and Jo say “we’re busy applying our late summer fertiliser and weed kill on lawns and we’re noticing the recent rain has caused a fresh crop of weeds to germinate; we’re on a mission to ensure these are gone before the end of the season”. Sarah and Jo are also on hand to give advice on fairy rings, toadstools, lawn pests and brown patches on lawns which can appear at this time of year and they provide a free lawn analysis service for anyone who wants help with their lawn. Here are Sarah and Jo’s top tips for keeping lawns in good condition and managing moss as we head into autumn.

ADVERTISEMENT FEATURE

1 Rake up and remove falling leaves regularly  A carpet of leaves left on the lawn will smother the lawn and starve it of light. This causes the grass to weaken and disease and moss will invade. 2 Continue to mow your lawn  Over the autumn and winter keep your lawn cut if the grass grows. It’s a myth not to cut your grass over the winter so on a dry day give it a cut on a high setting. Grass left to get too long will become weak, it will be slow to dry which then attracts moss. 3 Scarify your lawn  Rake out the dead matter that has accumulated in your lawn. This can comprise of grass clippings, leaves, dead stems, roots and old moss all mixed up with other decaying or partially decayed organic matter. Moss loves this matted debris in a lawn which we call ‘thatch’ so it’s best to get it out. Scarification is the name given to removing thatch from the lawn with a machine and its best to do this over the coming months and before next spring. Sarah and Jo say “when we scarify a lawn we rake up and bag all the rubbish that comes out of the lawn and for a small charge we can take it away if our customers don’t want to deal with it themselves. We like to make lawn scarification completely hassle free for our customers” 4 Apply a feed and moss control  Use a micronutrient autumn/winter feed that will give a stronger, greener, more robust lawn that’s better able to cope with the rigours of winter. “At GreenThumb we use a treatment that also dehydrates any moss that may have built up, helping to control it by slowing down its activity and keeping moss spores at a low level. One or two of these treatments over the darker and damper months of the year is ideal” says Jo.  5 Treat any weeds with a selective weed kill This time of year, after all the rain we’ve had, weeds are still actively growing so if you want to get on top of them before next spring now is a good time. If you don’t want to do it yourself just give GreenThumb a call. If you’d like us to look after your lawn for you or for a FREE lawn analysis, contact Sarah or Jo on 01733 755028. walks LOCAL HAMPTON

Hampton is surrounded by natural beauty; we have so many walks that local people are not aware of ...

L Trail 1 Trail 1

ast month, The Hampton Gazette had two local lads Jamie and Jon working on the Gazette as part of their work experience. One of their tasks was to explore what walks we have on our doorstep and to write about them so everyone can enjoy them. This month, we have two for you to try.

Trail 1

Trail 2

This trail should take approximatively one hour and it is six miles there and back. This route will take you along the Haddon path and through the fields of delights such as cabbages, turnips and wheat. It begins at Avery House which is situated at the top of Eagle Way; you turn right and follow a 'hidden' path that starts at the concrete blocks and leads to a sign that pointd out the route. You will need to follow this path for a while as it is one and a half miles long. You should then see a gate on the left that says 'No Parking' but next to this there is a post saying 'Public Footpath'. Follow the arrow on the wooden post and walk along the path for roughly 15 minutes until you see a gap in the trees on the left. There will be a mini bridge that leads to Folly Farms Equestrian Centre , with horses either side of this path but don't be alarmed as there is a fence separating you from them. After making your way out of the stables turn left onto to the footpath and follow this rode for two miles and you will end up where you started.

We suggest this trail for dog walkers as there are long straight paths so your dog cannot leave your view. For the majority of this trail it is scenic and you can let your dog off of the lead.

Trail 2

This trail should take approximately 50 minutes and is almost 4 miles there and back. This route will take you to some hidden places where you can relax with the family, it also gives you lots of room to walk your dog. The start is at the top of Eagle Way, outside Avery House; where you cross over the road and follow the sign that says 'Green Wheel, Farcet'. Head down the same path for 15 minutes until you reach a choice of two paths, take the left option and follow this. You will come to a patch of grass where there is a little bench to take a quick breather. After this you can carry on to the bridge that takes you over the train track. Once over the bridge take a sharp left and walk down the steps which takes you to a playing field where you can let your dog off of the lead and have a picnic; alternatively instead of going left at the bridge you could go down the steps opposite and take a sharp left once at the bottom, which takes you to a peaceful lake. Once you've chilled here you can head back the same way you came. We recommend this walk as you can let your dog run freely the whole time, it is also peaceful and secluded from the busy roads.

Lazer Erase

ADVERTISEMENT FEATURE

Since Laser Erase was established, Fran, the owner, has treated many clients for eyebrow tattoo removal.

W

ith semi-permanent make-up becoming more popular, requests for laser corrections are on the rise. Sometimes, clients have been unhappy with their eyebrow tattoo colour, or some brows are considered too big or the wrong shape. Most of the time the client loved their tattooed brows once upon a time but then decided against their look. Once removed, clients often get them retattooed by another make-up artist and occasionally they go back to their pre-tattooed look.

Laser Erase treat all eyebrows tattooed with black or brown inks. Due to possible reaction, they will carefully test before any full treatment and skin tests are free. Fran is experienced in removing parts of the ink, for example if the inked area is too close the nose. When removing part of a tattooed eyebrow, the client may need to have the edges re-inked to give back a sharp edge or line. Some clients only require one treatment whereas certain stubborn tattooed eyebrows can take around six treatments. Eyebrow tattoos are much easier to remove than body tattoos because the ink is not etched too deep down into the skin’s dermis layers and the skin on the face is quite thin with a faster cell turnover.

he noticed me below peering upwards and gave me a quizzical look. It could have been a ’he’, though, because the male incubates the eggs during the day with the female sitting on them during the night. I left him/her in peace to continue with the incubation of the eggs, which must have been there, although unseen. I was surprised to see a bird nesting so late in the season, but apparently they are prolific all year round breeders, some producing as many as ten clutches of two eggs every year. Producing twenty offspring in one year accounts for their rapid spread throughout the UK, having

spread from Europe in the 1950s. They bred for the first time in 1955 in Norfolk: before 1930 they were confined just to Turkey and the Balkans. There are many Collared Doves around Hampton who emit, to my mind, a rather gentle, peaceful cooing, although some describe it as monotonous! Their diet consists mainly of seeds, buds, grain, fruits, berries and bread. It seems that the availability of these foods has helped Collared Dove numbers to increase; there are now apparently about one million pairs in the UK. Collared Doves feed their chicks on crop milk, which is a milky secretion from the bird’s crop, rather than

I noticed a few sticks in the lower branches of our eucalyptus tree the other day. These few sticks grew in number, with the builder eventually taking up residence in the form of a Collared Dove. directly on insects (a crop, a pouch just below the throat, is where birds store the food they have eaten before it is passed into the digestive system). Interestingly it is only one of a few birds which can drink with its head down, sucking water as though drinking through a straw; most birds scoop the water into their beak and then lift their head up to swallow it. The Collared-Dove’s species name, decaocto, comes from Greek mythology. Decaocto was an overworked servant girl transformed into a dove by the gods to escape her unhappy treatment; the dove’s perceived mournful cry recalls her former life: hence the cooing! the main aims is to have an outdoor space that looks good and can be used all year round. The best way to ensure this is to have an artificial grass lawn. Artificial grass from 4evergreen is the ideal solution to creating a great space in shaded areas as well as open sunny areas. Artificial lawns are not only great for those problem areas like under trees and shady areas, but it

is also ideal for those spots where there is high wear such as children's play areas. Artificial lawn is ideal for areas of high wear and areas where children regularly play. Pet owners need not worry that their pets won't like the feel or smell of artificial grass as many have found that their pets actually like it. 4evergreen has a range of grasses created to look and feel like natural

grass, they are designed to be easy to lay, easy to maintain and easy to clean. Artificial grass can be laid as a full lawn replacement, you could lay it in a small courtyard, partial garden or a difficult area where your grass never looks healthy.

We have many happy customers locally, just ask to see our testimonials. 4evergreen Artificial Lawn Specialists T: 07505 991882 or 07572 443329

The last feast As September comes around the bugs in our gardens start to turn their thoughts to the approach of winter.

T

his is generally the last month of plentiful food supplies for vertebrates and invertebrates alike with fruits to gorge on and an abundance of insect life to munch most notably the cranefly aka the daddy longlegs. It is at the time of year that a glut of craneflies emerge; to mate lay eggs and feed spiders, birds and many more besides. The cranefly is an often detested bug with many people frightened by their appearance but they are totally harmless. The protrusion on the back end of many cranefly is actually their ovipositor used to push eggs into the ground often in lawns where in spring the larvae,

leatherjackets, will feast on grass roots. People also worry that the cranefly might bite them. This too is untrue. Indeed the adult cranefly has no mouth and cannot even drink let alone bite or eat. The adult cranefly has a life expectancy of just 48 hours, though the vast majority do not last that long trapped in a spider web or grabbed on the wing by a swooping bird. To many this unusual bug has no apparent purpose but without the bumper autumn feast they provide for birds, fishes, small mammals and carnivorous invertebrates many less animals would survive the ravages of winter.

Hybrid cars, warranty clauses and servicing Does your vehicle warranty mean that you are restricted to costly servicing at a Main Dealer? – NO It is a common misconception, encouraged by vehicle main dealers, that unless you have your car serviced with them, your warranty is no longer valid. As long as your car is serviced by a VAT registered garage and genuine parts are used then you can maintain your vehicle’s warranty at a fraction of the cost. At Excel Auto Care all services are carried out to Main Dealer specification, and at the customer’s request genuine

parts used, to ensure that you are no longer bound by your warranty and forced to pay high prices. Don’t let zero emissions prove costly ... Despite the rise in popularity of hybrid cars, there are still few garages that can offer vehicle technicians who

have been specifically trained for this type of vehicle. Mistakes in the servicing of this type of vehicle can cause untold damage to the delicate systems and can end up costing £000s in repairs. At Excel Auto Care our Hybrid Trained Technician has been working on these vehicle

types since they first came onto the market 17 years ago. His specialist knowledge and experience means that your Hybrid car is in the very best of hands at Excel Auto Care. Don’t just take our word for it ... take a look at our reviews and see what our customers say about us.

proposition for the palette. We offer three course meals from just £49.50 per person, options include traditional favourites as well as some delicious modern alternatives. This also includes exclusive venue hire and a DJ. All food is prepared fresh onsite by our talented team. Calling all young people...

Come and sing with a fun and friendly group.

Peterborough Young Singers (PYS) is a local choir for ages 7 to 21. A registered charity that promotes singing in lots of different genres including pop, traditional, musicals and lots more. The choir is run by a group of enthusiastic parents and we have Matt Smith (Head of Music at Hampton College) as our Musical Director. No auditions are necessary; just a willingness to join in with others, make new friends, and find your voice! We rehearse on Saturday mornings in the Community Room at CSK in Hampton. Each year we perform at local events and as part of more formal concerts, often held in collaboration with other Peterborough musical groups. Last year we also enjoyed taking part in ‘The Really Big Chorus’ performing the Messiah from scratch at the Albert Hall. We welcome the whole family to take part in our various social events with a firm favourite being our summer BBQ at Ferry Meadows. Come and see us perform at the Hampton Festival and then join us for a taster session at 9.30am on the 27 September at /PYSHome CSK, Sliver Hill, Hampton.

Taxation, Making Tax Digital The government has announced major changes to its Making Tax Digital for business (MTD) proposals: MTD will initially only apply for VAT registered businesses and will be mandated into HMRC's plans for quarterly bookkeeping and reporting from April 2019. MTD will not become compulsory for other business or taxes until April 2020.

The government says that it has listened and Mel Stride, Financial Secretary to the Treasury and Paymaster General said: 'Businesses agree that digitising the tax system is the right direction of travel. However, many have been worried about the scope and pace of reforms. We have listened very carefully to their concerns and are making changes so that we can bring the tax system into the digital age in a way that is right for all businesses.' HMRC has already begun piloting the MTD services and will continue to do so. It will start to pilot MTD for VAT by the end of 2017 with a live pilot starting in Spring 2018. These changes will be legislated for as part of the Finance Bill 2017. Changes to VAT reporting will come into effect from April 2019. From that date, businesses above the VAT threshold have to provide their VAT information to HMRC through Making Tax Digital software.

After

Proposed updated timetable: • VAT registered businesses, with turnover over the VAT threshold will be mandated into the MTD reporting system from 2019. • Property landlords and small business trading below the VAT threshold will join MTD from 2020, although they may opt in to MTD earlier if they wish to do so. • There is no news on what is proposed for companies, however the government is currently looking at reform of corporation tax.
