My name is Darren Bisby-Boyd and I am the Hampton Parish Councillor for Hargate ward. My background and experience has been in the social care sector working with vulnerable children, young people and their families to help and support them in their daily lives. I was elected as Hampton Parish Councillor for Hargate ward in May 2014 and I have campaigned and worked with various organisations including Peterborough City Council, O&H Hampton and the Highways Agency to try and solve some of Hampton’s ‘issues’, to make Hampton a better place to live. I believe I am very lucky to be bringing up my young family in a beautiful part of Peterborough where there are lakes and wide open spaces to go for lovely walks and bike rides. Sure Hampton has its problems like anywhere else with inconsiderate parking and speeding. But overall I believe it is the people that make a community and I would like to get more people involved with the Parish Council, from all ages and backgrounds. The reason why I wanted to become a Parish Councillor was that I wanted to help change the dynamic of the way our community makes decisions. As a Parish Councillor I want to make myself accessible and accountable to every local resident by putting people first. We can only achieve this by coming together as a community to support each other.

Local resident knocked over and injured by quad bike A woman was left injured in hospital after being knocked over by a quad bike in Hampton on Sunday 14 June.

T

he local lady said she “could not believe it” when the man on the red quad bike then rode off after she had asked him to direct an ambulance driving down the A15 to the cycle path she was on. “I just laid on the floor and thought I had done some real damage. I’m black and blue and I can hardly walk. Someone could be seriously injured or worse, if they get hit.”

The quad bike is said to have been coming round a bend at over 20mph before losing control and hitting her bike which she was sat still on. The man on the quad bike was in a group of around 10, the rest of whom were riding off-road bikes and who also left the scene. The police said they were called just after 2.30pm to a Green Wheel cycle route from London Road to Haddon.

There are many issues with the quad bikes and the police urge residents to report all incidents.

COMMUNITY NEWS

HAMPTON HEALTH The latest from your local health surgery

Influenza vaccination this winter Although it hardly seems possible, the nights are drawing in already and it is time to make sure you are protected against flu this winter.

T

hankfully most of us are not susceptible to this disease, but we do recommend that certain members of the community get immunised. You should seriously consider having the influenza vaccination if you can answer yes to one or more of the following questions: ✜ Are you over 65 years of age? ✜ Do you have asthma that needs continuous use of steroid inhalers? ✜ Do you have chronic lung disease? ✜ Do you suffer with heart problems? ✜ Have you got kidney disease? ✜ Do you have liver disease? ✜ Have you had a stroke or a ‘mini stroke’ (TIA)? ✜ Do you have diabetes? ✜ Do you have low immunity at the moment e.g. chemotherapy or some drugs or a previous splenectomy? ✜ Are you a main carer for an elderly or disabled person? ✜ Are you pregnant?

10

Flu vaccines should be available from the beginning of October. We will be sending out invitations via messages on your prescriptions, by email or by text messages to patients eligible for vaccination and we have a weekend drop in clinic arranged on Saturday 10 October between 9am and 11am. There is no need to book in for this clinic just turn up on the day and book in at the reception desk. Other clinics will be available after this date. Please check with our receptionists for details, or on our website which will be updated with new dates. If you are still unsure about the vaccine then please contact the surgery and a member of our clinical team will try to help your individual decision. Parents often find it hard to decide if their children need immunisation, again we try to help. Children of six months and over can be vaccinated if they fall into one of the risk categories. Further information is available on our website www.hamptonhealth.co.uk

Date for your diary On Friday 25 September we will be hosting one of the many Macmillan coffee mornings, raising money for cancer care by selling tea and coffee, cakes and biscuits. So please drop in to the surgery for a natter and some refreshments raising money for a good cause from 10am on 25 September.

This year marks the 75th anniversary of the Battle of Britain, when ‘The Few’ took to the skies and defended the UK from the attacking Luftwaffe.

About The Great British Sunday lunch

T

o mark the anniversary the RAF Benevolent Fund, the RAF’s leading welfare charity, is launching the Great British Sunday Lunch – the new national fundraising event aimed at getting families and friends back around the dinner table. Whether it is a full-on roast dinner with all the trimmings or a favourite curry, the Fund is asking supporters to get together and host a Sunday lunch on Sunday 13 September to raise vital funds. What better way to pay tribute to those who have served their country than by serving up some delicious food?

@Hampton Gazette @Hampton Gazette

/Hampton Gazette

By supporting the RAF Benevolent Fund, diners will be supporting work to assist veterans, serving personnel and their families who are facing challenges in their lives. The Fund receives no government grants and last year spent more than £18 million supporting 40,000 members of the RAF family, from the youngest child growing up on a RAF Station to our WWII veterans. We do hope you’ll join us in making the first Great British Sunday Lunch a great success. www.rafbf.org.uk/gbsl

BUSINESS FOCUS

LeadTec Local IT company LeadTec experiences strong growth locally, nationally and internationally.

I

T support business LeadTec Ltd has seen strong growth for their IT services and consultancy over the last 12 months. This is partly due to more and more businesses needing to upgrade their systems after years of no investment during the economic down turn. This has left small and large companies alike exposing their businesses to unnecessary and potentially high levels of risk through data loss and unavoidable system outages. LeadTec’s success is mainly down to the ability to listen to customers’ requirements. Then designing solutions into a reliable IT system that delivers efficiencies whilst also ensuring the maximum level of security and data protection are maintained. By delivering exactly what the

customer requests, with their added technical advice and expertise, LeadTec has retained existing customers whilst benefiting from strong growth through repeat orders. System upgrades are also a key driver for LeadTec as many businesses are still running end-of-life solutions such as Windows XP and Server 2003. With these systems no longer supported by Microsoft, any businesses still running them are wide open to cyber attacks and the consequent potential for data and productivity losses. The majority of these systems are also slow and inefficient by today’s standards, meaning that by upgrading now companies will ensure a more secure system with greater efficiencies.

When asked what are the biggest IT issues for local business? Technical Director Paul Speechley replied The majority of business owners we speak to are still struggling to find reliable advice and support to help them fix and maintain their IT systems. It still surprises me that, even today with all the media reports about data loss and cyber attacks, the majority of businesses we visit still do not have effective and well maintained security in place for their IT systems. “By simply ensuring you keep all your systems up-to-date, installing a recommended security platform and having a reliable backup solution you will ensure the long term protection of your business. However, not all IT support companies have the experience or knowledge to implement this successfully whilst ensuring systems and data is not affected.”

To ensure your business systems are up-to-date, running efficiently and secure, contact LeadTec now. Call 01733 600 700 Email: sales@leadtec.co.uk or visit www.leadtec.co.uk

he overall A-E pass rate was 98 per cent and new school records were set for the achievement of higher grades: 37 per cent of all passes were graded A*- B and an impressive 72 per cent were awarded A*-C. Headteacher, Helen Price, said: “We are delighted to be posting our highest ever A*-B and A*-C pass rates at A-level and are celebrating another year when every student in Year 13 achieved the equivalent of two or more A-levels. “Vocational pathways were also very successful at Hampton, with our range of BTEC courses maintaining their 100 per cent pass rates. “It is always a privilege to see students pick up their hard earned results and then progress to the next stage of their lives, be that university, college, an apprenticeship or starting in the workplace.”

Hampton WI How quickly summer has sidled into September with hints of yellow already edging the leaves of the trees. The nights will start to draw in and people will be settling in more at home.

I

t’s unbelievable how quickly Hampton WI has settled into its new home at CSK Church and we are so glad we made the move. Since the beginning of the year our numbers have doubled but we now have the space to enjoy it. Our meetings this year have been predominantly crafty and last month’s meeting was no exception. We had a fabulous time learning about needle felting and made lovely felt flowers. It was amazing to see a tangle of felt gradually change into a flat flower shape before our eyes. We also asked our members to give us lots of suggestions for next year’s programme. I’m not sure if it was the chocolate bribes that got them thinking but they came up with so many fantastic ideas! There is a lot to look forward to over the next few months and our 2016 programme looks like it’s going to be just as fantastic.

Maybe this month we might see even more of you?

ross the A15 and turn left to join the Green Wheel as it heads east away from the A15. The bridleway, which has recently been re-surfaced with brick-dust, takes you through dense woodland and then opens out to follow the Stanground Lode Corridor for 1.5km. Shortly you will cross over the Lode and you will be able to see the watercourse down to your left. Great Crested Newts are known to use this site as a corridor between other sites and it is an important bat foraging area. This stretch is also important for a range of birds and invertebrates and the verges contain wildflowers such as Bird’sfoot Trefoil, Rest-harrow and Wild Carrot.

Crown Lakes Country Park After 1.5km the path turns sharply south and then east again and rises up over the East Coast Mainline. Stop on the bridge and take in the 360° view. Behind you is an area soon to be a mix of housing and open space and in front of you Crown Lakes Country Park, created in 1997 by landowners O&H Hampton from two disused flooded brick pits. Walk down the steps and follow the brick coloured path up the hill keeping the lake to your right. After 400m you will reach the second crossroads and here turn right and follow the path as it leads you along the upper boundary of the larger lake. Take a look over the lake and see if you can spot any of the many birds that the lake attracts, including Great Crested Grebe, Gadwall, Pochard and Tufted Duck. Follow the lakeside path as it heads down to the water’s edge and loop around the lake. This path joins onto the boardwalk as it weaves among the reeds and bulrushes. This relatively undisturbed marginal vegetation supports birds such as Reed bunting and Sedge Warbler as well as providing excellent conditions for dragonflies, damselflies and other invertebrates. The path now passes the beach and links back to the main brick path again. Go straight across at this point and follow the path past

the informal games area and wildflower meadow. After 250m, take a rest on the bench overlooking the pond. Here the stream has been diverted to create a wetland habitat. Now follow the path round to your left and shortly you will find some steps leading you back up to the railway bridge. You can now follow the same return path alongside the Lode back to the A15.

BUSINESS PROFILE

360 Cleaning Being a single mum, working full time and living in a large four bedroom home I really struggle keeping up with my housework, writes Lorraine Clark. On a Sunday I have to choose between a day’s cleaning or spending quality time with my children. My choice is the children, they are not young for long and I want to give them some cracking memories.

S

o I have now called upon the help of local cleaning company 360 Cleaning. I have used cleaners in the past but I have been particularly impressed with this company. Once I had made my enquiry, I was given an appointment with one of the owners and we sat and went through my requirements. He took notes and wrote everything down which I was very impressed with. We worked out a regular and convenient cleaning slot and my first visit was booked in. On the day of the clean, a professional-looking 360 Cleaning van pulled up – which I was not expecting – and out hopped three smartly dressed cleaners all wearing a uniform. The ladies were all lovely, very polite,

20

and careful with my belongings. They had a full plan with them which we went through before they started. During the clean the ladies kept in touch with me, asking various questions about which cleaning products I would prefer them to use on particular items and surfaces. The clean took approximately three hours and the end result was amazing. My house literally sparkled and smelt so fresh and clean! Finally, I asked TV cleaning personality Lynsey, Queen of Clean, to come and inspect the house. Lynsey gave it a big thumbs up! I now can’t wait for my next clean. I highly recommended this company, amazing staff with amazing results!

COMMUNITY NEWS HOME & GARDEN

Top tips for planting your tulip bulbs this autumn Now is a great time to be planting your spring flowering bulbs. Here, Adrian Nind, managing director at Bakker Spalding Garden Company, provides five top tips for your autumn gardening. 1

Preparation is key

The first step is to remove weeds and incorporate lots of compost or other organic matter when planting your bulbs. Bulbs grown in pots need good drainage so put plenty of pot shards in the bottom and use well-drained compost.

2 Select your bulbs early With so many stunning spring flowers to choose from, selecting your flower bulbs is something you should do at an early stage. A recent survey we conducted revealed that the favourite colour plants here in the UK are red (23.5%) followed by purple (17.6%). We’ve seen a great deal of interest in our wide variety of tulips this year, including the ‘Exquisit’ tulip which resembles a double peony and the ‘Tropical Wave’ tulip which has a fantastic double yellow goblet.

3

Have your bulbs delivered just before you intend to plant them

Bulbs are sent directly from the nursery and are in optimum condition for planting. If you can’t plant them straight away, unpack the bulbs as soon as they arrive. Place them in a dry, dark place under 20°C and open the bags so that air can circulate.

4

Plant your bulbs correctly

Bulbs have very particular planting requirements, and should be planted in holes three to four times as deep as the bulb itself. Plant your bulbs in groups of at least six to ensure optimum results, and if you are unsure on which way the bulb should go into the soil, plant the bulb on its side: its stem will find its own way up to the surface!

5

Don’t forget to prepare your bulbs for next year!

We recommend feeding your tulip bulbs immediately after flowering – this gives the bulb time to store enough nutrients to ensure profuse flowering the following spring.

NATURE

Angling for success

With all the water that we have around Hampton it is commendable that fishing is allowed in quite a few of the larger lakes.

T

he only requirement that I am aware of is that a rod licence is needed, which can be purchased online or at a post office for only £5 for those aged between 12 and 16. An important point is that the fish should be returned to the lake. The only two ponds that have been officially stocked are the ones in Holly Walk (Hope Pond) and Black Swan Crescent (Angel Pond – the one with the fountain). These have goldfish in them and therefore must not be fished. Tench can readily be found in the Hampton lakes although they are quite shy in nature often hiding in dense weed. Tench feed on such small animals as pond snails and small pea mussels. They live between 12 and 15 years and grow to up to 60cm in length. Another common Hampton fish is the roach. It is much smaller than the tench, often no more than 35cm in length but they can grow up to 45 to 50cm long. They are quite an attractive fish, being a bluish silvery colour with red

fins. Amazingly a female roach can lay up to 100,000 eggs in a season. The third most common fish found in Hampton lakes, so I am reliably informed, Pike is the pike. The pike is quite aggressive, defending both its territory and its food. It tends to lie in wait for some time before suddenly bursting forward to seize its prey. Pike vary in size between 70cm and 120cm in length. I am informed that the perch is much less common in Hampton. It is typically greenish in colour with dark vertical bars on its sides with a red or orange colouring on the tips of its fins. They commonly feed on such creatures as smaller fish, shellfish and insect larvae. They grow to a maximum of 60cm and can live up to Perch 22 years. One way, apparently, in which fish may have entered the Hampton lakes is through eggs being stuck to the legs of wading birds and then carried from one body of water to another. This is particularly true for the perch.

Ending your marriage is traumatic – it is up there with bereavement and selling your house, not necessarily in that order.

T

he Peterborough Collaborative Law Group of family law solicitors has just had a relaunch, now to be known as The Best Divorce Options Group. Belinda Smith and Michele Fielding are both qualified collaborative lawyers and you can check their details and those of their colleagues in the Peterborough and Stamford area on the website at www.bestdivorceoptions.co.uk. Collaborative law is still a minority interest for those entering into divorce proceedings and struggling with the sharing of marital assets and arrangements for the children. It shouldn’t be. Divorce is never going to be a bed of roses but you can stop it being a bed of thorns by using the collaborative process rather than the traditional method of going back and forth between solicitors and, very often, ending up in Court before a Judge whose final decision you can only guess at – you are at the Court’s mercy. With collaborative law you keep control, you don’t go to Court and you have four-way meetings following agreed agendas with the mutual objective of working things out in a balanced and civilised manner and prioritising the children’s needs for the future.

Choose collaborative – it can be the best option.

The Sky is Falling! by Mark Teague

Chicken Little thinks that the sky is falling – and inspires a dance craze! When an acorn hits Chicken Little on the head, she panics and screeches, “The sky is falling! The sky is falling!” Squirrel, who knew a thing or two about acorns, tried to set the record straight, as did the other animals. The chickens started dancing; they moonwalked, they mamboed, and they did the twist. Pretty soon the other animals joined them. You can’t blame someone for wanting to dance, even if the sky isn’t really falling.

Your guide to

Living in Hampton

Return of

The Hampton Residents’ Update Meeting The evening of Wednesday 15 July saw the successful return of O&H’s Community Update sessions, as Hampton College’s main hall played host to a full house. With over 80 local residents in attendance, many were keen to hear more about progress being made in the Hamptons East.

B

efore the main event got underway, many residents enjoyed meeting with representatives from the various local organisations on stalls placed around the hall, taking time to enjoy a cuppa and find out about their activities in and around the area. The meeting officially opened with a presentation from O&H Hampton’s general manager Roger Tallowin, and included speeches from Hampton College’s headteacher, Helen Price, Police Inspector, Matt Bill, Director of Finance & Resources Hampton College, Caroline Behan, and Chair of Hampton Parish Council, Marion Sharp.

O&H Hampton’s role As part of the O&H Group of companies, O&H Hampton is mainly responsible for masterplanning future development and infrastructure in the Hamptons. The company prepares the land, puts in the roads, builds schools and provides public open spaces. With Hampton (Peterborough) Management Ltd, a not-for-profit company, looking after the public open spaces and lakes, the O&H Group will continue to fund the management and maintenance worked required in Hargate and Vale. Another not-for-profit O&H company Value Nature Ltd, looks after all the nature reserves, including Hampton Nature Reserve, Fletton

Reserve, Kingston Park Reserve and Stillwells Reserve.

The Hamptons East Commenting on the design ethos for the site, Roger said: “The master plan for the Hamptons East reflects the lakes and Lode corridor, with each proposed new village taking its name from the new open space within and around it. Hampton Beach, Hampton Gardens, Hampton Woods and Hampton Water will each have very individual characteristics, features and appeal. As the principles of sustainable living extend to this area, these villages will complement the high environmental quality that already exists there.” To the south of the villages, further development in The Hamlets will see clusters of larger properties offering potential for more specialist local quality developers.

Hamptons East and the Yaxley area. It will also offer additional place capacity for the existing Hampton development. Hampton Gardens will complement Hampton College in offering a wider range of courses and a joint sixth form. As a multi-trust academy, the college is uniquely placed to share staff and resources across the sites.

What matters most The evening drew to a close with a Q&A session that, by and large, reflected findings from the recent jointly commissioned O&H Hampton and Hampton Gazette residents’ survey, as featured exclusively in July’s issue. Echoing this, most agreed that whilst the location, green open spaces and facilities make the Hamptons a great place to live, parking and the traffic situation on Hampton’s roads does cause concern.

Hampton Gardens Secondary School

Looking forward

In taking to the stage, Hampton College’s headteacher Helen Price looked at the story of the college so far. In September 2014, the Hampton Academies Trust was announced as the preferred educational provider for the Hamptons East, selected by Peterborough City Council and Cambridgeshire County Council. When it opens in September 2017, Hampton Gardens Secondary School will serve the

The first housebuilders are due to start work on the Hamptons East site at the end of the year and O&H Hampton has also agreed to provide 10 hectares of land for the new secondary school which will be built over the next two years with funding from both PCC and Cambridgeshire Council. Juvéderm certainly lifts the face – it lifts the cheekbones and everything from the chin up.

Before

After

Restore lost volume to cheeks and chin for a

gentle lifting effect

Middle age comes to all of us. Suddenly sneaking up when we least expect it! One day we have a lovely wrinkle free, youthful glow, then all of a sudden you catch yourself in the mirror and feel officially middle aged, writes Lorraine Clark.

T

here are so many treatments out there now, all promising to smooth your skin and turn back the years, from off the shelf products to cosmetic surgery. Many people are wary when it comes to going under the needle in the name of beauty.

The BodyLaser Clinic understands this . . . Their goal is to make you look and feel your best. Highly trained staff provide a specialist range of quality laser and skin rejuvenation treatments that are tailored to your needs. One treatment which is proving extremely popular is the Juvéderm Voluma. Juvéderm Voluma is the latest in the Juvéderm range of hyaluronic acid fillers specifically designed to restore volume in areas of volume loss. Common areas include the cheeks, cheekbones, and chin. Additionally, due to its

versatility it is also suitable for adding definition to the jaw line. According to Beverley – BodyLaser’s facial aesthetic expert – an attractive face is characterised by smooth, round contours, high cheekbones and a thin, well-defined jaw line. These features together comprise the ‘triangle of beauty’ or ‘heart of face’, with its base at the top and summit below. As we age, facial fat loss, gravity and loss of the skin’s natural elasticity conspire to reverse this triangle’s composition, leading to a narrower, less youthful forehead and temple area, and a wider, heavier jaw line. Juvéderm Voluma with Lidocaine was specifically created to restore lost facial volume in the cheeks, cheekbones and chin. It was developed to be smoother than other hyaluronic acid facial volumisers, making it easier to inject during the filler treatment and resulting in a smooth, natural look and

feel. Juvéderm Voluma with Lidocaine was developed with Vycross technology to deliver a natural look and feel, with results proven to last up to 18 months. After an in-depth consultation with Beverley, we agreed that this treatment was the best option for my face; I am anti the ‘frozen look’ and like my face to move naturally ... just smoother! The treatment is quick and painless with no recovery time and you will see the full results in two-four weeks’ time. As you can see from the before and after photos, my face looks gently lifted and revitalised. It’s subtle yet noticeable, I would liken the effect to looking like you have had a wonderful break and you return looking radiant and rested. This treatment is perfect for anyone, who like me, likes to look natural, but needs some extra help with keeping the crags and crevices at bay!

PET CARE

Is it time to

NEUTER? Once your pet is six months old it is a good idea, as part of a preventative health care scheme, to get your pet neutered. Why neuter your pet?

N

eutering is mainly recommended for medical benefits and should not change your pet’s character, but may help with certain undesirable traits such as aggression, dominant behaviour and the desire to roam. Your female pet’s risk of mammary cancer is very low if she is spayed before her first season, and she will be spared the risk of post season complications such as life threatening womb infections that can occur after any season. The hassle involved with bitches when they are in season is also taken away, as well as the mess. Some bitches even need to be kept housebound due to the unwanted attention from male dogs when out, which can be frustrating for both dog and owner. Male dogs become less interested in females in season once they themselves have been neutered. Castration can also dramatically reduce the risk of certain types of cancer, including testicular and prostate cancer.

34

And, of course, neutering is the best way to prevent any unwanted pregnancies!

So what does having your pet neutered involve? If your pet is female it is spayed, removing both ovaries and the uterus. If your pet is male it is castrated removing both testicles. Both procedures require a general anaesthetic, which carries a very small risk of complications at a young age. The length of time the operation takes will depend on whether your pet is a cat, dog or rabbit, as well as what breed and size it is. These procedures require a day’s stay at the vets; your pet is admitted in the morning and discharged the same day. They may need to return to the vets for post-operative checks and for stitches to be removed, but recovery usually takes just a few days to a week.

You may need to use a pet service for many reasons such as the following:  You work full time or are away from home for long periods of time. Just like humans, dogs need to relieve themselves throughout the day.  You prefer not to use a boarding facility or kennel when you go on holiday. Instead, a dog walker or pet sitter can come to your home and provide walks and care as needed.  Your dog is not getting enough exercise during the working week and, thus, ‘acting out’ and/or displaying undesirable behaviours.  You aren’t physically able to walk your dog due to old age or surgery.  You don’t have a doggie door or fenced-in garden. The benefits to you and your dog(s):  No more accidents!  Your dog will receive much needed exercise, stimulation, playtime, treats and fresh water.  If desired, your dog can interact with other dogs on group dog walks. This interaction with other dogs can help to properly socialize your dog and it is sure to tire him or her out for the day.  Having a dog walker will provide your dog with a consistent routine.  A wealth of knowledge and expertise at your fingertips.  Your dog will be happy, healthy and safe when you return home.
