The longer daylight hours, the blooming of flowers and the budding of leaves, April is definitely the time to enjoy being outside again, and getting creative ... Peterborough Presents will be building an outdoor meeting space for Hampton residents to meet and make friends and hosting shelter building sessions in April and May where the community can share their ideas. They have also commissioned local virtual reality artist, Lee Mason, to create Hampton 2.0; a virtual version of Hampton. These are part of three projects, which are featured in our creative and inspirational pullout. The distinctive call of the cuckoos can be heard in the woods surrounding Hampton as they herald the start of spring. Yet, in another stark reminder of our diminishing natural world, this familiar voice is disappearing. Discover more about the cuckoo in our wildlife feature. A garden has so many dimensions that it will keep any gardener with a germ of creativity inspired. As yours comes back to life, have you ever considered opening it up for others to admire? This can also help raise money for nursing and health charities at the same time. Turn to page 30 to find out more about The National Garden Scheme. From Easter egg and treasure hunts to fun with the Froglife Dragon Finders, there's something for all of the family to enjoy in our events section this month. For the second year, Hampton Parish Council invites you to nominate individuals and businesses you feel deserve recognition and celebration for their outstanding contributions made to local life through hard work and dedication. Please turn to page 7 for more information. We celebrate World Health Day on 7 April, so it is interesting to learn about the supportive work of local charity, Mission Possible UK (MPUK), and the missions accomplished by Dr Chris Grant, Dr Richard Trounce and their wives during their trip to Rwanda. Along with good nutrition and exercise, sleep is now recognised as an important contributor to good health. Finding the right mattress for you (page 11) might make a bigger difference to your overall health than you realised. We hope you enjoy this issue.

By Dr. Chris Grant – retired Partner of Yaxley Group Practice
Trip to Rwanda Sue and I have just returned from another trip to Rwanda with Dr Richard Trounce and his wife Carrie. We have been supporting the work of a local charity called Mission Possible UK (MPUK), in the SouthWestern corner of Rwanda on the edge of Lake Kivu that separates Rwanda from The Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). Monthly Closure Dates - The Practice will be closed on the Wednesday 17 April and 15 May 12.30pm and 4pm for staff training. Emergency No: 01733 240478.
The main focus of our activity was on a small Island in Lake Kivu called Ishwa, where we were tasked with providing water filters and hand-washing stations for the households of two of the four villages on the Island (more will follow as funding allows). Currently, the only water supplies on the island are either directly from the lake or from a couple of boreholes – all of which are contaminated and sources of infection. The water filters provide clean drinking water without the cost of firewood to boil the water and have been shown to dramatically reduce the rate of stomach infections in the community. In all, we gave training on health and hygiene, and care of the water filters to 220 households, visiting a number of households afterwards to reinforce the use of the filters. Whilst on the mainland we also visited a church and village supported by St Peter’s Church Yaxley. After the church service, Sue and Carrie taught a group of about 60 teenage girls and young women about feminine hygiene, providing them with packs of reusable feminine hygiene materials. This is a significant issue for school age girls in rural Rwanda, who often can’t afford to buy menstrual products and who consequently often miss three or four days school every month. We also visited a new soccer project for the young
men of the locality. Proper footballs are expensive in Rwanda and they often play with homemade footballs. We were able to present each of the teams with a new football and pump, which were received very enthusiastically! When we visited in 2014, the Yaxley surgery and the Patients’ Association kindly donated the ultrasound machine which was due to be updated. Sue and I took the opportunity of visiting the clinic and maternity unit, where to our delight we discovered that the machine was still working perfectly. In fact, the midwife described to us how only three days before our visit the machine had saved the life of a mother and unborn baby. Apparently, the mother turned up in early labour, not having had her antenatal appointments. She was scanned and found to have a problem where the placenta was covering the neck of the womb. This blocks the birth of the baby and often causes fatal bleeding during labour. The early discovery enabled her to be transferred to the nearest hospital where she had an emergency caesarean section. The director of MPUK and Bishop Nathan Amooti from South-West Rwanda will be joining us at St Peter's on Sunday 19 May for the 11:00am service and all who are interested in the work in Rwanda are welcome to attend.

2nd Annual Community Awards
Although Christmas is the most celebrated Christian holiday, Easter is by far the most important event in the life of Christ Easter – when the shops are full of chocolate eggs, chicks, bunnies, and bonnets. However, the greatest symbol of Easter and the Christian faith is the empty Cross, for it reminds us that not only did Jesus die, but that he rose again on the third day, conquering death. His rising to new life transformed lives when it happened and is still transforming lives today. The Cross speaks of the love of God, and eternal life for all who believe and put their trust in Him. Loving relationships are at the heart of the Christian faith and it’s that love that we endeavour to share at CSK Hampton Church. We meet every Sunday morning at 10am at Silver Hill and we have extra services during the Easter season. Whether you are a believer looking to grow in your faith, or whether you would merely like to explore the claims of the Christian faith, you would be most welcome to join us at one of our services. Or come along to our Easter Craft Afternoon suitable for all ages, which is on Palm Sunday, 14 April, from 3 - 5pm.

Preheat the grill. Heat olive oil in an 8-inch pan over a medium high heat. Add chopped shallots and cook for 2-3 minutes beginning to soften. Add garlic and continue to cook for a further two minutes until softened. Add spinach and parsley (or basil) and cook, tossing often until spinach is fully wilted and any water released by the spinach has cooked off. Season to taste with salt and pepper. In a large bowl, beat eggs and milk with a whisk until mixed together. Don't over-beat. Add feta, and season with salt and pepper. Pour egg mixture over spinach then gently stir with a spatula to
release the spinach from the bottom of the pan so that the eggs are in direct contact with the surface of the pan, so they cook quickly. Cook until the eggs are almost totally set (this takes 10-12 minutes), reducing heat to prevent burning. Place pan under the grill for a couple of minutes, until the top is set as well, keeping a close eye on it so it does not burn. To release the frittata from the pan, loosen edges with a spatula. Place a dinner plate over pan, and holding plate firmly flip the pan over so the frittata releases onto the plate.

Mattresses under pressure ...
Getting a good night’s sleep is essential to staying happy and healthy. But buying a mattress without doing your research first can lead to sleepless nights and achy mornings, so you’ll want to make sure your chosen mattress is worth the investment ... Types of mattress Open spring mattress: also known as open coil or continuous coil mattresses contain one long piece of metal wire coiled into numerous springs. There’s also an additional border rod or wire to maintain shape and provide structure. It’s a great value for money option, although sides are machine-stitched rather than hand-stitched, but they are lighter than other models, making them easy to turn. They tend to be less supportive, so are most suited to guest bedrooms or as children’s beds, where they are used occasionally or will need replacing regularly anyway. Pocket spring mattress: this is more luxurious, as it’s made from individual, small springs housed in their own pocket of fabric. This means each spring moves independently, providing more support than open spring mattresses. You can buy soft, medium or firm versions, and they are more breathable than memory foam or latex mattresses (so ideal if you’re always getting too hot during the night). These are heavy to turn though and can be filled with natural materials such as lambswool which may agitate allergies. This is a
good option if you’re looking for a bed for two people, as the separate springs will cater for your different needs and weights, and lessen the chances of rolling into your partner in the middle of the night. Memory foam mattress: these are made from a mouldable material that also responds to temperature and weight, and has hypo-allergenic properties. It will mould to the shape of your body, absorb your weight and relieve pressure on your joints. Not everyone likes the sinking motion, but it’s ideal for those who need support or suffer from a bad back, as it will maintain posture and align your spine horizontally when sleeping on your side. Latex mattress: these mattresses are filled with latex foam, which is an especially breathable material, so you won’t overheat. It’s also extremely durable and should last for many years. It’s a good option for those with allergies or asthma. They can feel quite solid at first though, so they’re better suited to those who prefer a firmer bed. Usually heavy, latex mattresses can be difficult to turn and cheaper versions can develop lumps and dents over time.
Mattress firmness The type of firmness you need will depend on your sleeping position, height and weight. Here we explain what level of firmness is best for what type of sleeper. Soft: side sleepers or those who change positions during the night are best suited to soft mattresses. This is because the way you sleep already relieves pressure from your spine so you want your mattress to mould to your body’s natural position. Medium soft: ideal for those who change their sleeping position during the night, as it will still mould to your body position but provide a little more support. Medium firm: this is best for people who sleep on their back as you require extra lower back support. Firm: ideal for those who sleep on their front, are over 15 stone or suffer from back pain. It will keep your back in a relatively comfortable and stable position without allowing you to sink into it as you sleep. Source: IndyBest review, The Indpendent

Lakota (Lover of Nature)
I really don’t think it is my imagination; I have heard cuckoos in the woods surrounding Hampton Vale. That distinctive calling is seen by many as one of the first signs of spring.
A
nd it is only the male cuckoo who makes this call. Before April they live in Africa and return there usually by the end of August; so they’re not with us for very long. Sadly, though, it seems they are in decline; appearing on the RSPB’s Red List. This means that any species on this list has suffered at least a 50% decline over the past twenty-five years and is globally threatened. As well as being well known for their call they are also interesting due to their rather selfish nesting habits: they are known as brood parasites. This means that they do not raise their own young but leave this job to others. They lay their eggs in other birds’ nests and when the egg hatches the chick has an inbuilt programme to push out any other eggs or chicks in the nest. As a consequence it will have the sole attention

of its adoptive parents and thus ensure its survival. The cuckoo chick will quite often grow to two to three times the size of its adoptive parents but these parents seem not to notice and carry on feeding this giant until it is ready to fly. Their diet consists of insects, with hairy caterpillars being a particular favourite. The cuckoo does have a resemblance to the sparrowhawk and some believe that it has evolved this way so that it can easily have access to other birds’ nests: it frightens them away because they believe it is about to attack them. In the Middle Ages people believed that cuckoos actually brought the spring with them. Farm workers were given the day off when the first cuckoo call was heard and celebrated by drinking cuckoo ale. On hearing the first cuckoo you were best to lay all your coins from your

pocket and turn them over or face bad luck. If you were standing on hard ground when hearing your first cuckoo then bad luck would prevail but if on soft ground you could look forward to a prosperous year. William Wordsworth’s poem ‘The Cuckoo’ illustrates that it is easier to hear a cuckoo than to actually see one:
O blithe New-comer! I have heard, I hear thee and rejoice. O Cuckoo! shall I call thee Bird, Or but a wandering Voice? To seek thee did I often rove Through woods and on the green; And thou wert still a hope, a love; Still longed for, never seen.

7.30pm, Serpentine Green Shopping Centre Eastern Angles: ‘Tide Jetty’
Eastern Angles brings the Norfolk Broads to Peterborough through their next play, ‘Tide Jetty’. The Tide Jetty follows the story of two brothers, Tucky and Nathan who grow up on the banks of Breydon Water alongside tomboy, Eliza. The three of them are inseparable. As they grow older the inevitable happens and both the boys fall for her. But tragedy tears the trio apart and years later it is time to discover the truth of what really happened. Written by critically acclaimed playwright Tony Ramsay, The Tide Jetty is a new play combining music and movement to explore what we treasure and how and why we preserve it. Tony Ramsay’s previous works with Eastern Angles include: The Long Life & Great Good Fortune of John Clare (“Compelling, fascinating and dramatic” The Stage), The Anatomist (“A vision of the past pregnant with the present” Time Out) and Bentwater Roads (“an engrossing drama from the numerous pasts lurking around it” The Times).

SING FOR LIFE 2019: 40 WOMEN WANTED! Now that the winter blues have passed and the days are beginning to get a bit longer, it’s time to get out and do something new and exciting for 2019! Sing for Life could be just the ticket…
L
aunching in May, Sing for Life will sign up 40 local women with a range of previous singing experience (including none) to rehearse over 10 weeks for a charity concert supporting Sue Ryder Thorpe Hall Hospice at the Cresset on Saturday 20 July. The project aims to make singing inclusive and accessible to all women regardless of age, social background or previous experience
and over the years has introduced hundreds of local women to the joys of singing while raising many thousands of pounds for this muchloved local charity. There are as many reasons for getting involved in Sing for Life as there are women who take part: singing has a host of welldocumented health and wellbeing benefits, there’s a fantastic social scene, and the chance to meet

people you wouldn't normally meet and discover music you wouldn't usually experience. Plus of course there’s the charitable side of the project and the opportunity to give something back to the community, as well as to challenge yourself and try something new! Sarah took part in the project last year and says “I kept seeing banners on my way into work - I was tempted to have a go and I’m so glad I signed up, it was the best thing I ever did! The first session was a bit daunting because I didn’t know anyone but by the end of the night I’d made new friends and already felt part something much bigger! You get such a buzz from singing in a group and performing live on stage in front of friends and family was the highlight of the project for me!” Lisa, from Stamford says “as a cancer patient I thought to myself ‘I need to start doing things’ – not a bucket list as such, just things I’d always wanted to do – and when I saw Sing for Life advertised, I thought I’d have a go! The whole experience has been just brilliant - both the singing, and meeting so many different people from all walks of life. After more than two years of treatment I can’t do enough to give back – Thorpe Hall does an absolutely amazing job for so many people!” Nilesh Patel, Community Fundraiser at Sue Ryder Thorpe Hall Hospice says “The support we receive from the Sing for Life project is invaluable and we’re really delighted that, once again, they have chosen to support us in this way. It costs us £9,000 a day to provide care to people in our local community. That’s not just the nursing, it’s things like lovingly prepared meals, specialist medical care, family support and round the clock opening hours so friends and
family can be there whenever they need to be.” “Sing for Life is not about finding the next Adele; it’s about helping ordinary women find their voice” says William Prideaux, the project’s director. “So many people lack confidence or genuinely believe they can't sing, but deep down just about everyone secretly has a favourite karaoke number, and – we promise – our very experienced music team will have you singing, and loving it, in no time!” This year, for the first time, the project has a corporate sponsor – Hunt & Coombs Solicitors. "We're really thrilled to be able to support this exciting project” says Anna Spriggs, Senior Partner “not only is it raising money for Sue Ryder Thorpe Hall Hospice, a very special local charity which is already close to our hearts - it is also giving women the opportunity to stretch themselves and take on a new challenge. A number of our staff are planning to take part in the project, and we can't wait to get started!" Sing for Life launches with introduction sessions at the John Mansfield Campus on Thursday 9 May 5.30 - 9.30pm and Saturday 11 May 2 - 4pm. Absolutely no previous singing experience is necessary, just a willingness to step out of your comfort zone, get stuck in and give it a go! Whatever your starting point, over the 10-week project your singing will improve in leaps and bounds and - while you might not end up winning the X Factor or perform at Covent Garden - that’s a huge confidence boost and very liberating! So, get in touch and get involved: there's a whole new world waiting!

moneymatters Check your state pension forecast by Pete Bird, Bird & Co, Certified Public Accountants
Do you know how much state pension you will receive when you retire? You can find this figure through your online personal tax account (PTA) or sign up for one at https://www.gov. uk/personal-tax-account and click on ‘view state pension forecast’. People who reach state retirement age after 5 April 2016 need 35 full years of national insurance contributions (NIC) to qualify for the full state pension. Your personal tax account also shows any gaps in your NIC record. An incomplete NIC year will be recorded for periods in which you were contracted out of the state pension. If you are still under state pension age (which is gradually increasing to 68)
you can continue to pay NIC or collect NIC credits to boost the amount of your state pension. Self-employed individuals need to pay class 2 NIC of £153.40 for 2018-19 to achieve a full NIC year. If you are employed you can accrue a full year of NIC for free by earning between £6,032 and £8,424 for 2018-19. If you are neither employed nor self-employed you can pay class 3 NIC on a voluntary basis at £14.65 per week. Class 3 NIC can also be used to fill gaps in your NIC record for the last six years. Please note that these rates were increased for the current 2019-2020 tax year.

HAMPTON makes MUSIC Hampton Makes Music is a chance for families to make a racket, gain skills and have fun together
Creativity brings families closer together On Saturday 23 February, we launched the project with a free afternoon of music making at Hampton Gardens School. Hampton families had a blast at our mass drumming workshop, used technology and mobile apps to create their own tunes, and had a go at some epic song and lyric writing. Families who came along described the afternoon as “awesome”, “fantastic”, and even “the best day ever!” With over two hundred in attendance, we think this shows that there’s definitely an appetite for musical activity in Hampton, and that local residents want opportunities to share experiences together as a family. Over on our Facebook page there is a video of event highlights, full of smiling faces and heroic drumming power-stances, which is definitely worth a watch!
On the day, we asked people about their music tastes to help us decide the next steps for the project. According to our results, Hampton families’ favourite kinds of music are: rock, pop, dance, and disco! If you agree or disagree, or want to share your own music tastes with us, drop us a message on one of our social media channels.
What’s next for Hampton Makes Music?
In response to the feedback and ideas shared on the day, we’ll be launching a brand new music project for Hampton this spring and summer! Suitable for families of all ages and sizes, it’s sure to be a chance to make a creative racket! Like Peterborough Presents on Facebook or visit www.peterboroughpresents.org/hampton
Hampton Makes Music is delivered by Inspire Community Music (ICMUS). We commissioned ICMUS after talking to students, shoppers, parents, and Tiddlers around Hampton. Many people said that they wished there were more activities for families to take part in together.

Creating the perfect Hampton home! Lucy Kent DIY
My husband put in the seating area in the kitchen as there’s not a lot of space. This way, we can take advantage of having more people round. My mum’s quite good at sewing, so she made the cushions to fit.
Memories
We have a post box on the wall in the downstairs toilet, where we put our memories; film and theatre tickets, little notes, and receipts. On New Year’s Day we take them out and read them.
Scent
Smell is really evocative of memory isn’t it? I really like patchouli, sweet smelling things, and musky scents as well. Fresh, clean florally scents.
Inspiration
I went to The Ivy in Manchester where there are many botanical prints. Sometimes, in other people’s houses, I see a colour I wouldn't normally pick out. A friend’s house had used dark inky blues and I thought this looked really good.
Art
We like to use art to add colour too. My daughter Jessica likes photography, so that’s a photo of Harry which we printed onto a canvas. My mum used to holiday there as a child and her mum did, so it’s very nostalgic for us.
Light
A light can make a huge difference, it’s like another piece of art really. We tend to use lamps mainly for a softer light, to make it feel cosy.
Nature
The view from the front is a nature reserve; a lovely open space to look out to. It’s really important to us to feel fresh air. Upcycling: My mum upholstered the chair for us. The chair was second-hand and she chooses fabric for them. Ikea do some great fabrics, and this one little piece of fabric set the tone of the room.
Josie Stone Memories
Until now I’ve lived in a lot of rented accommodation, and when you don’t own the property, you think more about your accessories and the things you take with you. I’ve always been very sentimental and a hoarder. I don’t tend to buy new, everything’s second hand. I like it if it has a history or a story, and if it’s my family’s story then that means a little bit more. I’ve recently been trying the Marie Kondo tidying, holding things and seeing if they bring you joy. I’ve really enjoyed doing that, because although there is clutter, a lot of what I own is meaningful.
ent e - statem Josie Ston
Colour
I don’t have a favourite colour but I’ve gone with blues, greens and bits of purple. They are more relaxing colours to live within. I don’t think you could live in a red room but then I do like splashes of colour of like pink and yellow in the wallpaper.
Josie Sto ne -

Materials
I like to have different materials on the sofa. I particularly like the corduroy. I’m not very good with things that are plain. I’m aware that it can sometimes be a bit much, but if it’s a plain colour it has to have some sort of pattern or texture. So I don’t have any cushions that are just one colour. I’ve also found that cats really love corduroy!
Make a statement
I think it’s important to make somewhere feel like your own. When I was in rented houses, I’d have stuff everywhere, and although the walls were magnolia, they would be covered. I don’t need to have as much stuff around because I can do the wallpaper now, and that makes my statement!
Lucy Kent - art
In the spring Caroline will be building an outdoor meeting space for Hampton residents to meet, hang out and make friends. Josie and Lucy suggested this space could be enclosed and cosy, a place to be calm and relax with abundant greenery, splashes of colour and a nice smell! What kind of outdoor space would you like to see in Hampton? Caroline will be hosting shelter building sessions in April and May where the community can come along and share their ideas. Peterborough Presents has commissioned local virtual reality (VR) artist, Lee Mason, to create Hampton 2.0; a virtual version of Hampton
Make solid
Lee is a pro at using VR technology to design digital sculptures which he then 3D prints. For Hampton 2.0 he’ll be running workshops for local residents to design and print their own digital sculptures. The best designs will also be added to Hampton 2.0 Here, Lee tell us about the benefits of using VR and shares his top tips for creating sculptures using virtual reality software. VR is already being used by artists all around the world to create ground-breaking new artworks. When the canvas is the space around you, even quick 3D sketches are often amazing. With a virtual reality headset, you can hold your rough design in your hand and look at it from all angles while you draw or sculpt it!
Make solid
This ability to view your creations as an almost physical thing is a big deal, and with the right software you can go the next step and actually print your designs in a 3D Printer. However, the creative freedom offered by VR means that the artwork can be highly detailed, full of little cracks and gaps and potentially hundreds of free-floating pieces. If you print these without any consideration you’ll come back to your printer hours later only to find a chaotic mess of random pieces.
Follow these steps to make sure your art is well constructed.
Make your model solid. By making the model solid you delete
thousands of unseen shapes from within it making it a much simpler object to print.
Make your model hollow. That’s right, now you do the
opposite to step one and make it hollow again. Importantly none of those unseen shapes will return, but you’ll use a lot less material and save money if you make your artwork hollow.
Your design will be ready to send to your 3D
printer software for printing now. The software will add any supports it’ll need to keep it intact while it prints. When it has finished printing you’ll need to very carefully break the sculpture out of the supports and file down any lumps and bumps.
And there you have it. In a few simple steps you’ve sculpted artwork in 3D space inside virtual reality and brought it into 'real reality' in your own home or studio.
The first Digital Sculpture workshop will be held in Hampton in May. Like Peterborough Presents on Facebook or visit www. peterboroughpresents.org/hampton for more information. Lee will be working on Hampton 2.0 through the spring and summer ready to share with local residents later in year. Watch this space!
Make hollow

younggazette Hampton College Preparations for our final examinations in May and June are gathering pace. This is a stressful time for all involved and we take care to ensure that all of our students are as well prepared as they can be. We have already started revision classes after school and at lunchtime, motivational assemblies, one to one mentoring, and we have extra sessions planned for February half term. There will be even more holiday revision sessions at Easter and May half term. Last year’s cohort found these to be extremely helpful and they certainly made a difference. Year 11 have their final Pre Public Examinations straight after half term and Year 13 had theirs a few weeks ago. The results of these will be used to identify precisely where students need to improve and plug gaps and revision will be focussed on these areas. There are very many resources that we are directing students towards such as PiXL apps, GCSE Pod, Seneca, plus revision guides. We encourage everyone to make the most of these extra sessions and resources to help maximise grades.
We have recently opened a new facility called ‘The Bridge’ for students in Year 10 and 11. The new facility is being run by Mrs Baron and is available Tuesdays and Fridays at lunch and after school and any Year 10 and 11 students are welcome to use the facility to do homework or revise. Over February half term the Geography Department went on a fantastic trip to Italy, where they visited Naples, Pompeii and Vesuvius and Business Studies students went to New York, where they visited the Empire State Building, saw the Statue of Liberty and had a tour of the downtown Financial District. Over 40 Hampton College students recently participated in National Young Carers Day. The Young Carers Trust helps support young carers and young adult carers by supporting their mental health, which is often affected by the pressures of their caring role. Hampton students helped to raise public awareness of the mental health support needs of young carers and are supporting the #CareForMeToo campaign run by the Young Carers Trust #YCAD
Hampton Hargate Our Year 4 residential trips to Stibbington took place at the end of February and beginning of March. The children had a fantastic few days and engaged in lots of fantastic activities including a visit to the nature reserve, making Eco passports, a Viking day and toasting bread and marshmallows around the camp fire! In other news our Reception children have been enjoying watching the chicks hatch as part of the Living Eggs project. Reception and Year 1 really enjoyed their Vivacity Book Bus visit. They had a story and introduction in the classroom followed by a visit to the big purple book bus which was parked at the front of school. Lots of the children were really excited at the prospect of visiting the bus and borrowing a library book. Thank you
to Miss Moss for organising the visit. Our Fairtrade Fortnight was a success and as a Fairtrade school, we recognise the unfair circumstances some farmers and workers experience in other parts of the world. We have taken a lot of time to learn about what it means to be Fairtrade, which has gained us our full Fairtrade status. Activities were completed in each year group during the fortnight including the opportunity to purchase a Fairtrade ‘divine’ chocolate bar. In fundraising news we have been raising money for Comic Relief and Peterborough City Hospital with our non-uniform days. The children had a fantastic day dressing up as members of the emergency services – there were plenty of police officers, firemen and doctors on hand that day!

Firstly, we want to give all our parents a massive 'thank you' for supporting our successful ‘parent and play' session This was extremely busy and we hope to repeat this event in the near future. The last few weeks we have had so much fun with our two topics; the gruffalo and growth. The explorers were taken on a gruffalo journey where they made gruffalo crumble (apple crumble) and owl ice cream! The inventors kept busy planting violas in the garden and digging up vegetables for snacks. We will continue with the theme of growth and also incorporate a spring theme.

Girlguiding is the leading charity for girls and young women. We’ve been around for over 100 years and much has changed during that time!
We’re giving girls a voice We run out of school activities for girls aged 5 – 18 and all of our adult members are volunteers. People get involved with Girlguiding for a number of reasons. Many were Brownies or Guides as children and remember how much fun they had. Whatever their reasons all our volunteers are part of an innovative organisation which creates a safe, nurturing environment where girls and young women can work together to try new things and take on new challenges.
All Girlguiding units are staffed by trained volunteers and supported by a volunteer team at local, regional and national levels. Girlguiding volunteers are given training and support by an experienced local volunteer team on everything from First Aid to leadership skills. We have waiting lists in some areas and unless we can open new units soon some girls will be too old for Rainbows or Brownies by the time a space becomes available for them. We are looking for volunteers
who can help us open new units and ensure that more girls have the opportunity to be part of Girlguiding. Volunteering with Girlguiding is flexible and fun. You don’t have to commit to a weekly session, every other week, monthly or holiday guiding are all options. If you’re not sure about working with the girls directly then maybe you can use your other skills to support a unit. This could be updating our online system to track girls achievements, posting updates on social media or
completing the accounts. If you’ve got management experience you might be interested in becoming a District or Division Commissioner supporting local volunteers and communicating updates from the county and region offices. Girlguiding is for the girls, we give girls a voice, we give girls their own space and we change as the girls change. Could you help us inspire the next generation of women? If so then please get in touch.
You can find out more on our website www.girlguiding.org.uk or by contacting Jennie Grove, Growth & Communities Coordinator on 07494 633 431 or jennie.grove@girlguiding.org.uk

Hampton Mini Movers Little Acorns Day Nursery and Montessori School As we approach the final term, before our preschool leave us to start their new adventure at big school, the children are focusing on getting ready for school! The children have been learning to become independent, putting on their own coats and shoes, and they have also been learning the
letters and sounds in the alphabet and recognising numbers. We have recently celebrated World Book Day! The children dressed up in bright colours and made Elmer the elephant masks. We also read many stories and talked about our favourites.
We are currently taking bookings for September 2019 and also into 2020! If you would like to come and have a look around and are interested in a space please contact the nursery on 01733 244000 or enquiries@littleacorns-daynursery.co.uk
It has been lovely seeing so many of child from newborn to reception our Mini Movers enjoying our weekly age. We are a drop-in, stay-andcraft sessions lately and we certainly play session, so there's no need to hope that their wonderful works of book or commit to a set number of art are brightening up your kitchen weeks. The Ark CSK The Ark took the theme of families this half-term and we have enjoyed activities which celebrate mothers, fathers, brothers, sisters and everyone else who cares for us. Of course, it was lovely to say a special ‘thank you’ to all our mothers, grandmothers, aunts, sisters and other significant ladies in our lives as we celebrated Mothering Sunday. There were some beautiful cards made by the children. World Book Day didn’t pass us by either, with Claire creating a lovely book area for the children to enjoy with their parents and
carers. It was great to see so many families enjoying books together and telling the stories with the toys. Story-telling is a big part of The Ark and Heather has continued to tell us a range of stories from fishermen brothers to Joseph the carpenter. Our last session before the Easter holidays will be Thursday 5 April then we will be taking a break until Thursday 2 May.
Stay in touch via our Facebook page – Facebook.com/ TheArkHampton. But don’t forget, CSK Church is holding an Easter Crafts Afternoon on Sunday 14th April, 3pm – 5pm. All are welcome.

Open your garden
By Rachael Leverton
This month I’m going to talk about The National Garden Scheme. This wonderful initiative gives garden-lovers unique access to more than 3,500 exceptional private gardens in England and Wales. It also raises money for nursing and health charities through admission fees, teas and cake. Beneficiaries include Macmillan Cancer Support, Marie Curie, Hospice UK and The Queen’s Nursing Institute. By opening your garden to visitors, you’ll give people a great day out, and raise money to help those in need. Even better you’ll connect with a community of like-minded garden-owners, all passionate about their beautiful gardens.
Is your garden worth visiting? Do friends and family wax lyrical about your plot? Do neighbours ask for advice and cuttings? Do you sometimes wish you could show other people the result of all your hard work? If you answered yes to these questions, then it’s very likely other people would love to see your garden too. It might seem a somewhat daunting experience but opening your garden to the public can be very enjoyable. Many people get the bug and open their
30
gardens year after year. Most people start by opening once in a year, but many go on to open twice a year, to show off their garden in different seasons. You don’t need a big garden. There are some tiny plots in the NGS. What matters is quality, character and interest. NGS will support you all the way with their network of helpful, friendly volunteers. Initially you’ll be visited by one of the team during the season you feel your garden would look best.
And if you don’t feel as though garden is worthy of being part of the scheme, why not visit open gardens in your area to gain inspiration, hints and tips, make new gardening friends, and raise a bit of money for charity. Happy gardening. Call 01483 211 535 to speak to one of the NGS team or visit www.ngs.org.uk

p e e d n i Sk
By Louise Addison
The skin is our largest body organ. It works away, constantly renewing itself, shedding dead cells every 28 days. It also provides a barrier against the environment and keeps our insides where they should be!
The skin on our face and hands is more exposed than other areas so it’s unsurprising that the combined effects of pollution, UV exposure and stress mean these are the places which show signs of aging first. There are thousands of product on the market that promise us all manner of miracles but do any of them work and is there anything we can really do to hold back time? What about facials? Having a facial is a luxurious but is it really doing anything? Beauticians say yes. Although the skin self-renews, dead cells on the surface make it look dull. Facials help by physically removing dead cell build-up, to reveal younger fresher skin underneath. There are a bewildering array of facials to suit skin type, age and budget they all follow a similar pattern. The first step is a deep cleanse, followed by exfoliation then, depending on which treatment you’ve agreed with your beautician it can include steaming, blackhead and whitehead extraction, massage, face mask and moisturiser. Variations include aromatherapy oils and acupressure. Your face should never feel sore or puffy when the treatment is over. You should look like a
cleaner, shinier, healthier version of you! I’m up for that. Which skin technologies really work? Alpha-hydroxy acids These are present in many moisturisers. Their effectiveness depends on concentration. Between 8-15% they are a very effective skin smoother. At strengths of over 15% they are used in chemical peels which should only be carried out by a Dermatologist. Trans-retinoic acid It’s been proven to reduce wrinkles, increase epidermal thickness and stimulate collagen deposition. It is effective in serum at very low concentrations but the effect is cumulative, so you will need to view it as a longterm strategy. It’s also very sensitive to sun light and breaks down on exposure, and can cause a mild skin reaction so should only be applied at night. Vitamin C serum This is a highly effective anti-oxidant and wrinkle-reducer but needs to be concentrated (10% or more) and stabilised in order to work. Keep it out of the light and use in the morning. It breaks down on exposure to sunlight so use it under a moisturiser with a high SPF. Use only stabilised, colour-free preparations. If there is a yellow tinge, it’s no longer effective.

Time to hang up on the telephone tricksters – don’t be fooled this April
HANDY NUMBERS • A NUMBER FOR EVERYTHING TO ADVERTISE IN HANDY NUMBERS • CALL 07891 340535 APPROVED TRADERS
A recently-launched crackdown on scammers across Cambridgeshire and Peterborough is gathering pace - with the aim of making the county scam-free. Safe Local Trades is delighted to be supporting the Cambridgeshire and Peterborough Against Scams Partnership (CAPASP), which includes Cambridgeshire Constabulary, Police and Crime Commissioner Jason Ablewhite, Cambridgeshire County Council and Peterborough City Council. CAPASP is committed to working towards stamping out scams; from postal to online fraud, to telephone, romance and doorstep scams. Over the next few months, we will be looking in more detail at these scams and the warning signs which could prevent you from parting with your hard earned cash. So, telephone scams – potentially a lot more damaging and sophisticated than your average nuisance call about PPI, direct sales call or automated offer. Here is an at-a-glance guide to the types of scam calls, and some tell-tale signs which can help us hang up on the fraudsters. Vishing - A telephone call is used in an attempt to steal personal information. SMShing - An SMS text message is used in an attempt to steal personal information. Investment or ‘Boiler Room’ Scam - A telephone call offers worthless, overpriced or non-existent shares. Pension Scam - Designed to lure people to cash in their pension with promises of upfront cash, guaranteed returns and one-off deals. From the 9th January 2019, it is illegal for genuine pension companies to cold-call. Computer Scam - A scammer calls you and asks for you by name. They’ll say they are a computer-security expert from Microsoft, or another legitimate tech company. They’ll say that your
PC, laptop or tablet has been infected with malware (or a computer virus), and that they can help you solve the problem. The scammer will attempt to confuse you with jargon or ask you to open common Microsoft utilities and services that list what may appear to be problems with your computer.
Stay safe: NEVER give out any bank / financial / personal information over the phone. A scammer will try and persuade you on the phone to hand over your bank card to a courier or taxi driver and they often say they’re from your bank or the police. They may ask you to give them your card and PIN, set up a ‘safe’ account, or buy expensive goods like watches or mobile devices and hand these over to them. Fraudsters can sound extremely professional and will do all they can to convince you that their call is genuine. ALWAYS be wary of any unsolicited phone calls, especially when they ask for your personal or financial details, hang up and report ANYTHING suspicious. Your bank or the police will NEVER: Ask you to transfer money to a new account for fraud reasons, even if they say it is in your name. Phone you to ask for your 4-digit card PIN or your online banking password, even by tapping them into the telephone keypad. Ask you to withdraw money to hand over to them for safe-keeping. Send someone to your home to collect your cash, PIN, payment card or cheque book if you are a victim of fraud. Ask you to purchase goods using your card and then hand them over for safe-keeping.
We put more scams under the spotlight in the next issue. If you think you or a loved one may have been the victim of a scam, report it. To find out how you can sign up for the fight against fraud, and read some tips on spotting a scam, visit www.friendsagainstscams.org.uk
