Find out how to have your say on the Hampton Parish Council budget for next year on page 7 Also on page 7 is news about The Bobby Scheme, which is a small charity run by the Cambridgeshire Police Shrievalty Trust and operates locally. They will visit your home free of charge if you are 60 years old or over and have recently been a victim of crime. Are you thinking about going green and trying to save water? Find out how to make your bath water go further on page 11. Just on your doorstep is the beautiful nature reserve out at the Great Fen. Many dog owners are aware that chocolate can be harmful to their pet, but it may be a surprise to learn what other foods they shouldn't eat. The list on page 19 might surprise you. Mocktails are designed specifically for those who do not take alcoholic drinks or need to refrain from them, and are particularly favoured over cocktails by drivers, pregnant women, and others who choose party drinks that are alcohol-free. There are some tasty mocktail recipes for you to try at your barbecues on page 23. We hope you enjoy this edition.

FACEBOOK/cskhamptonchurch First, we’ve had the almost-driest spring on record, and then June brought such rain that it felt like it could be the start of the almostwettest summer. Brexit politics are cleaving countries, communities and even families, with unknown longterm consequences. Our two major political parties are fragmented, and the economy is fragile. High Streets are hollowing and our social services struggle. Uncertainty surrounds us. Not catastrophic, imminent doom, but enough to leave many of us unsettled, and that’s before we start stressing over climate change. In recent weeks the 75th anniversary of D-Day was commemorated, and many will have heard the hymn Abide with me, one line of which goes, ‘Change and decay in all around I see’ followed by ‘O thou who changes not, abide with me.’ God, unchanging, ever constant, loving, who will accompany us through all the changing scenes of life, in trouble and in joy. It’s not that bad stuff doesn’t happen to good
people. It’s just that in order to cope, we need to have some constants in our lives. Family, relationships, home and occupation, all can offer these, but each is limited and may not be as constant as we hope. Jesus said, ‘Come to me, all you that are weary and are carrying heavy burdens, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me; for I am gentle and humble of heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.’ Engaging with Jesus by asking for his help is no cop-out. We may experience it through the kindness of others, a lightening of our heavy heart, a more peaceful night’s sleep. He is that constant and ever fixed mark who has promised that if we engage with him, he will never abandon us even if all around is crumbling. If you’d like to explore how you might do this, we’d love to chat with you at CSK Hampton Church. Many blessings Sylvia

Have you recently been a victim of crime or feel at risk of becoming a victim? If so we may be able to help.
The Cambridgeshire Bobby Scheme The Bobby Scheme is a small local charity run by the Cambridgeshire Police Shrievalty Trust and operates across Cambridgeshire and Peterborough. Either one of our two security advisors; Glen Carter, retired policeman and Andy Cleathero, ex security guard, will visit your home free of charge if you are 60 years old or over and have recently been a victim of crime. During your visit Glen or Andy will carry out a thorough security assessment of your home, they will discuss options with you and install various security devices such as alarms, door chains, window alarms and sensors. Both Glen and Andy are trained to give up to date crime prevention advice on a wide range of topics and other products available. A home fire safety check is also carried out on behalf of the Fire Service and smoke alarms fitted if necessary.
As well as helping people feel safer in their own homes, the visits give peace of mind and improved confidence and reassurance. Last year the scheme visited and helped secure nearly 1400 homes, this figure amounts to approximately 50 homes per week. If you would like a visit to reduce your chances of becoming a victim, the Bobby Scheme can offer the same service provided you are aged over 65 or are disabled and are happy to donate £50 to cover essential costs. If anyone would like a visit, please contact us on 01480 413311 or visit www.thebobbyscheme.org The Bobby Scheme also supports victims of domestic violence. These victims are referred by various agencies such as the police, social services, Women’s Aid to name but a few.

Comic Cons
by Richard S
Comic Cons are big business now, for both attendees and guests. If you have no idea of what a Comic Con is, let me fill you in. Comic Cons are a spectacle to behold and, for any film and TV fans, this can be a mecca for meeting and conversing with likeminded fans. They are a way for everyone to get together under one roof and immerse themselves in the world of Film & TV; from traders & guests, to memorabilia and everything in between. Most can be a full-on explosion of sounds and colour, with novices being subjected to an aspect of life (a sometimes claustrophobic, energetic and supremely busy aspect I must add) that is becoming more and more popular to those of us who have a passion for all things big and small screen. They have a way of bringing together people from all walks of life, from all corners of the country, and in many cases, the World. With a sudden explosion of smaller, more local Cons are beginning to appear in almost every major town across the UK. Some are fantastic, and some are merely a moneymaking scheme for the Operators. You have the large, main Cons of Showmasters & MCM, along with Em-Con, that operate out of the major cities, and offer the high-end actors and actresses from wellknown TV shows and films. These can be
very expensive and leave you feeling a little bit lost, as well as hugely out of pocket. This also goes for the more specific Cons, such as Walker Stalker (mainly The Walking Dead actors) & Heroes & Villains (Arrow, Flash etc) It is the smaller, lesser publicised Cons that tend to be the best for value for money, have the more specialised guests that many people would never usually get to meet, or who would not be found at the larger, more expensive Cons. These can be so expertly run and a real joy to be a part of for anyone who is a novice all the way to seasoned Con attendees. I personally find these ones to be much better than the larger ones and I have had the privilege of attending quite a few over the recent months, 1 particularly disappointing and several supremely exciting and inclusive for everyone. There was also a specialist Con for those with disabilities, Feel the Force Day, which was held here in Peterborough and was possibly the most humbling experience I have ever had, through doing Live Facebook streams
& interviews with the celebrity guest as well as mingling with the attendees. You can see more on my Facebook about this. The major mainstay for all Cons are the Cosplayers. For those that do not know what this is, it is where a person takes on the persona of a film or tv character, dresses up as them, and acts out life as that character. It really is a joy to behold. The skills and intricacies in not only creating the costumes but also the depiction of said characters persona etc is huge, and Cosplaying is hugely popular across the board. They really make the Cons enjoyable and are happy to have photos taken with you, as long as you ask! This is a big thing for all cosplayers and it is something that is being highly publicised in groups and pages for Cosplayers. Always ask permission to take a photo. I would highly recommend anyone to attend a local Con (there is one in Kettering in February 2018 & in Cambridge in April 2018) and to experience them first hand. There really is nothing quite like them!

Daisy Daisy
There are some flowers I love because they are showstoppers, others because of their evocative scent, and some because they are unusual. Michaelmas daisies don’t tick any of those boxes, but I love them anyway. They are bright, cheerful, and completely undemanding - at home in the poorest, driest soils, and bees and butterflies love them!
home and garden
homeandgarden
By Rachael Leverton They get their common name from their flowering period, which peaks at Michaelmas, the feast of St. Michael on September 5th, though they will carry on flowering well into late autumn. This means they are great for injecting colour into borders which can start to look a little washed-out and dreary in late summer. Until the mid-nineties, Michaelmas daisies were all known scientifically as asters, but then some were reclassified. Look out for the name Symphyotrichum, as many popular varieties now carry that name instead The gardener credited with popularising the Michaelmas daisy was Ernest Ballard. Many of the varieties he cultivated are still available and bear the names of his family members. “Ada Ballard” is named for his sister and is lavender blue, “Marie Ballard” is a pretty pale blue double bloom named for his wife. He is also responsible for
“Prosperity” and “Peace”, rose-pink and deep mauve respectively, which he named straight after the First World War. If you want a tallish variety suitable for the middle of the border, try “Little Carlow” which grows to about 90cm and produces masses of violet-blue blooms. One of my favourites for the back of the border is “Calliope” which has striking black elegant stems that reach heights of 2m, smothered in delicate lilac flowers. A good small variety is “Beggarten” which is pale blue, compact and clumpforming. “Tonga” is also smaller and is a lovely deep purple which looks great in a container. Although they are not highmaintenance plants Michaelmas daisies benefit from being cut down to ground level in late autumn and covered in a good mulch of well-rotted organic matter. And that’s all there is to it! Happy Gardening.

TOP TIPS
Keep it simple It is possible to buy special kits to convert all
your home’s grey water for garden-usage, but these can prove easy.expensive. You’re more likely to try something that’s cheap and If you really get into water-recycling though, then go for it!
home and garden
Recycle your wastewater
Think natural Switch to environmentally friendly cleaning and
beauty products. These are biodegradable and won’t harm your plants.
I like to consider myself an eco-gardener. I use few Don’t forget the shower Put the plug in when you shower, pesticides and I recycle, upcycle and repurpose and you can save the water for the garden. whenever I can. Like many people I own and use Safety-first All grey water will contain some bacteria. Use it several water butts, which are a fantastic way to utilise within 24 hours but don’t use it for edible plants or for pots all the lovely free rainwater nature provides. By Rachael Leverton and containers, only on decorative border plants. Over the past few years I’ve been reading and researching about other sources of water too. I’m talking about grey water. But what is grey water and how can gardeners make use of it? Grey water, for those not in the know, is any kind of household wastewater apart from toilet water, which is considered ‘black water’, and which should definitely not be recycled by the average gardener. You can reclaim water from your washing machine or dishwasher, but this can prove costly and time consuming. The best advice for us amateur eco-gardeners is ‘keep it simple’, especially in the first instance. Basically, this means water from the kitchen sink, the bath or shower, or paddling pool. Getting grey water to the garden is not difficult. In the case of washing-up
water, simply use a removable plastic bowl in the sink which can be carried out. For baths and paddling pools ask at your garden centre or local DIY store for a water siphon hand pump. All you have to do is prime the siphon with a couple of squeezes then let the water run out into your temporary storage containers. Once you have the grey water you need to clean it before using it in the garden. This involves filtering it into a large watering can through a piece of fleece or muslin to remove any debris and obvious residue. The water should then be left to cool. It needs to be used within 24 hours to prevent bacterial build-up. Now that many of us are on water meters recycling our water makes both good environmental and sound economic sense too.
Think laterally You don’t have to restrict grey-water to garden usage. Use it to clean the car too!

Looking to buy a home?
5 top tips to get you started Kerry McQuade Heartland Mortgage Services
See a mortgage advisor to check your affordability It’s important you know how much you can borrow and buy a property for, to make sure you don’t view and fall in love with a home you can’t afford!
Access your credit file Use services such as Experian and give the report to your mortgage advisor, who will then recommend the options available to you.
Create a viewing plan At Heartland, we work with our clients to create a viewing strategy which ensures that they are viewing a range of houses and that the one they buy is right for them.
Need to sell? Get your home on the market! Many people will be looking at Rightmove daily, waiting for their dream home to come onto the market. Unfortunately, this often means that they miss out as it is sold to someone who has already sold their property, or is more ready to proceed. Understand the costs Costs to move vary from person to person. At Heartland, we offer this as part of the process, so you are in an informed position from day one!

TRAVEL FEATURE by Jamie Banks
King's Landing If you are a Game of Thrones fan upset by the end of the series, then don’t worry, you can still visit some of the fantastic locations used to film the show One of these is the beautiful Croatian city of Dubrovnik, known better to Game of Thrones fans as King’s Landing. The late-medieval walled city area known as the Old Town is full of beautiful Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque churches, monasteries, palaces and fountains. It was used extensively to film the series and is in the UNESCO list of World Heritage Sites. I was able to visit the city last month and it really is a stunning location. The streets of the old town are made from white marble and at night the whole city seems to shine. There are numerous cafes, bars and restaurants scattered around the streets and you can find a great spot to sit and relax with a drink or eat a local dish. For fans of the show, you can take the Game of Thrones tour that will show you all the locations used in the series. Dubrovnik is great place for a weekend away or a day trip from a longer stay at some of the beach resorts along the Croatian coast. It is also a good base for excursions to see sights such as Kotor Bay in Montenegro or Mostar in Bosnia. enquiries@kuyenda.co.uk www.kuyenda.co.uk 0800 90 98 980

Hampt n
Lakota (Lover of Nature)
I know we’re past the official midsummer’s day (21st/24th June) but to me it is still the height of summer, so may I be forgiven for indulging a little longer in the glories of summer before autumn creeps in?
16
Summer in Hampton is such a rich time for wildlife. Everywhere around us nature is displaying wonders through plants, trees, animals, birds and minibeasts. We only need to take a short walk around one of the lakes, or through the woods or around Robins Wood to find nature flooding our senses. I particularly enjoy the greenness of the variety of trees that have been planted, creating such mixed, dense habitats for so many creatures, especially the birds. From the natural woodlands around the edges of Hampton they move into our world through the canopies of these trees; and enter our gardens. I only need to sit in ours for a short while to view such an activity of birdlife; swooping overhead and sitting on garden fences around me. The herring gulls above bring the essence of the seaside to our inland community with their shrill cries. Redbreasted, cheerful looking robins hop along the fence seeming almost to smile at me and say hello. One pair has even raised a brood in a nestbox I made for them last year. Blue tits flit from tree
to tree, and they too have raised youngsters in another box in our garden. Wild flowers delight the eye with their variety of colour. I have loved seeing the sown wildlflower grass areas over on Hampton Water: the poppies are such a wonderfully deep red that I have to just stop and admire them, as well as the bright purple/blue cornflowers. The other week I was delighted to hear a lark singing continuously over Beeby’s West Lake. I was so pleased to hear them again; at one time they also used to sing above the wasteland areas at the rear of Tescos. The activity of the wildlfowl in the lakes is one that often interrupts my strolls. I have to stop and watch the variety of breeds there and observe how differently they find their daily meals. Some paddle near the edges grabbing weeds from near the surface, swans upend themselves and grebes dive below the surface for what seems like an eternity. Summer in Hampton is a yearly delight and I give thanks to all those who planned, designed and constructed such a successful area for wildlife, which we can all enjoy.

t i d l i u B Nature and
will come
A pioneering project to create a rich natural habitat for rare insects, plants and other wildlife out of a previously lifeless, barren area of land in the Hamptons has won two prestigious awards from the body that recognises the outstanding work of ecologists and environmental managers across the UK and Ireland. EXCEPTIONAL ECOLOGICAL PROJECT IN THE HAMPTONS RECOGNISED BY TWO NATIONAL AWARDS Following 20 years of careful development, the Hamptons now boasts more than 1,000 acres of open space, lakes and woodland areas, providing a habitat for a huge range of birds, reptiles, insects and rare plants, and thought to be the highest amount of green space per resident in any new development in the country. However, much of the site has had to be created from scratch, surrounded by the legacy of more than a hundred years of brickmaking and other industrial uses. The latest partnership project at the Hamptons between O&H Hampton Ltd, BSG Ecology and nature conservation charity Buglife has turned one of those brownfield sites into an extraordinary, thriving hotspot for nature. The project won the best Small-scale Mitigation Award and Tony Bradshaw Award for outstanding best practice from CIEEM, the Chartered Institute of Ecology and Environmental Management.
The Tony Bradshaw Award recognizes exceptional projects and is only made on a discretionary basis. It was a great accolade for O&H Hampton, BSG and Buglife to win this. The judges noted that the Hamptons project demonstrated best practice in terms of habitatcreation techniques, sustainability and collaborative working, as well as clear benefits to nature. Monitoring at the site has recently revealed the presence of over 400 invertebrate species, including the rare black-headed mason wasp and three other species of principal importance, one nationally endangered and 13 nationally scarce species. The site also supports more than 60 different plant species and a particular type of plant bug that was formerly considered extinct. The results of the project have now been put into the public domain to inform similar initiatives and to help other landowners and property developers.
Roger Tallowin of O&H Hampton said: “O&H Properties has a long-term approach to the careful stewardship of our natural resources. The Hamptons is recognised internationally for its nature reserves and its commitment to biodiversity. “But what we have now shown in the latest area of development is that it’s also possible to create a rich ecological environment from scratch which can then be moved in the future, if done in a responsible way. This is an important lesson for all landowners and developers. “In 2007 we started with a totally barren area of scraped clay and used it as a test site. We added many different grades of brick, gravel, wood and other recycled materials to replicate a brownfield site and then left nature to get on with it. With surveying and monitoring support from BSG and Buglife, we can now see the thriving ecosystem taking over. It proves our view: build it and nature will come.”

Thunderflies Hot humid days are the preserve of sudden plagues of small black winged insects creeping through closed windows and doors into our home. These are the Thrips also known as thunder flies due to there association with the high humidity before a thunderstorm breaks or the less flattering picture frame flies because often they seem to find their way behind the glass but in front of the picture in picture frames at this time of year. In fact, thrips generally live on plants sucking at their sap, though a few predate smaller insects or live on fungi. In the right conditions they can
breed exponentially, in part because they are able to reproduce asexually, hence leading to these massive apparent invasions. Some thrips act as vectors for plant viruses. They do not bite humans but can be itchy crawling on skin giving the impression of biting. Some thrips actually provide pollination services whilst over 6,000 individual species have been identified globally. In most cases they lay their eggs either on or in plant tissue

One Million Pound Winning Pioneering
Areas of the Great Fen are being used for sphagnum moss growth, which has the capacity to act as a host to other plants, tomatoes for example.
Project
Earlier this year at the People’s Postcode Lottery Dream Fund awards gala the Wildlife Trust in Cambridgeshire left with a £1m cheque The Water Works project (which beat more than 200 competitors to be one of only three funded projects in the UK) is a collaboration with partners Cambridgeshire ACRE, the University of East London and the Centre for Ecology & Hydrology, and will be looking to pioneer a new form of wet farming based at the Trust’s Great Fen. This innovative project will be seeking to protect soil, clean water and prevent further peat erosion. Modern farming practices damage and consume one of the natural resources we all depend on for life: soil. In traditional farming in the UK 1,800 Olympic swimming pools of peat are lost annually due to farming, a clearly unsustainable loss, while 50% of CO2 emitted by farming comes from lowland peat soil.
18
The two year project has a wide scope to work with (initially) the micropropagation of plants, grasses and seeds for a whole new way of farming, with aims of a global reach. Working with academic and agricultural partners who bring cutting edge knowledge the project is harnessing innovative trials with plants - areas of the Great Fen are being
used for sphagnum moss growth, which has the capacity to act as a host to other plants, tomatoes for example. If trials are successful and can work on a commercial scale, they could be an alternative to dry land cereals – and if wet farming works here, in the driest part of the UK, it can work anywhere.

When it’s NOT a dog’s dinner Here, we reveal some foods that dogs shouldn’t be allowed to eat and why … Milk and Other Dairy Products
Chocolate Dark chocolate is even worse than the milkier variety. Chocolate contains methylxanthines and theobromine which could mess up a canine’s insides by causing vomiting, diarrhoea and excessive urination, panting and thirst, an abnormal heartbeat, seizures or even death.
Alcohol Alcohol can have similar effects to chocolate and also cause abnormal blood acidity, central nervous system depression, decreased coordination or even coma in dogs.
Grapes and raisins Scientists have been unable to identify the toxic substance contained in grapes and raisins, but it’s known they could cause kidney failure and shouldn’t be fed to dogs.
Milk and milk-based products can cause diarrhoea and other digestive problems for your pup. They can also trigger food allergies, which can cause your dog to itch. High fat, high calorie food can be bad for pets and if eaten excessively can lead to lots of other health problems. Most cheeses are also very salty, meaning eating too much could eventually bring on heart disease or stroke in your dog.
Raw/Undercooked Meat, Eggs and Bones Raw meat and raw eggs can contain bacteria such as Salmonella and E. coli that can be harmful to pets and humans. Raw eggs contain an enzyme called avidin that decreases the absorption of biotin (a B vitamin), which can lead to skin and coat problems. Feeding raw bones can be very dangerous for your pet who might choke on bones, or sustain a grave injury should the bone splinter and get lodged in or puncture your pet’s digestive tract.
Onion
Red&Friends
Dog Walking HAMPTON BASED Providing a reliable and caring service
Competitively priced Fully insured Local Hampton resident
Chemicals in onions can cause dogs’ red blood cells to rupture or reduce how effectively they can carry oxygen around their body, whether the vegetable is cooked or raw.
Nuts Nuts are packed full of fats and oils that could lead to diarrhoea, vomiting and pancreatitis in dogs. Macadamias meanwhile can cause a range of other problems in pets too, including weakness, tremors, depression and even hyperthermia.
Xylitol Used as a sweetener in a range of products including chewing gum, toothpaste and baked desserts, xylitol can cause insulin release in dogs and potentially lead to a drop in your dog’s blood sugar and can also cause liver failure. Early symptoms include vomiting, lethargy, and coordination problems. Eventually, your dog may have seizures. Liver failure can happen within just a few days.
Veterinary trained
Avocado
Over 30 years’ experience with dogs
Avocados contain something called persin. It’s fine for people who aren’t allergic to it. But too much might cause vomiting or diarrhea in dogs. Persin is in the leaves, seed, and bark, as well as the fruit. Also, the avocado seed can become stuck in the intestines or stomach, and obstruction could be fatal.
Minimum 30 min walk Weekend availability
Tea and Coffee A tiny sip or two is unlikely to do major damage but drinking too much of a morning cuppa could be life-threatening for dogs so it’s best to keep your pet away from hot beverages. Caffeine could be very harmful to your dog as it’s a methylxanthine, like the chemicals found in chocolate.
Garlic Like onions, garlic contains chemicals that can damage red blood cells and negatively affect dogs’ overall health, raw or cooked.
Olive oil
Please call Abi on
07913 422206
Like most oils, olive oil is high in both fat and calories and could therefore cause harmful weight gain in dogs if lots is given to them over time. It may also cause digestive problems for pets and lead to vomiting or diarrhoea if consumed in excessive amounts. If you suspect your dog has eaten any of the above, please note the amount ingested and contact your vet for advice.

whatson Aged 10 - 18? Love performing? Be part of Vivacity’s 2019 Panto,
Beauty & the Beast On Sunday 15 September, children aged 10-18 can come and show off their singing, dancing and acting skills at the open auditions for this year’s kids’ chorus for Beauty & the Beast. Vivacity are looking for 3 enthusiastic teams of 10 children to perform between Thursday 5 December 2019 and Sunday 5 January 2020. This is a perfect opportunity for young performers to get early stage experience alongside a professional company and perform on the Key Theatre stage throughout the Christmas period.
The annual Key Theatre panto is unique throughout the region as it stars some of the country’s most talented actor-musicians; all singing, dancing and playing instruments live on stage. Successful chorus members will be able to stand alongside some of the best showmen and women in the country, many of whom have starred on the West End or in national touring theatre. Auditions take place on Sunday 15 September at the Key Theatre. Children aged 10-12 are welcome from 11am and ages 13-18 kick off from 2pm. Both will last approximately two hours. This is a great opportunity for aspiring actors and actresses to gain stage experience - but most importantly, make new friends and have a great time. Auditions are truly open to all with no previous experience required. You don’t have to be a member of a dance or drama club either - selections are made solely based on the audition on the day. Successful chorus
members will perform in 20 shows over the Christmas period. Parents from previous chorus members have said: “It was a great experience and really fun to do and perform.” “The cast and chaperones were amazing and they made [my daughter] feel welcome” “...right from the start it was obvious that the children were as important to the proceedings as anyone else.” Successful chorus members will join some of last year’s returning, popular and dynamic adult cast of actor musicians. Returning members include Fran Frenech, last year’s operatic pirate diva Dolores Smee as evil Wolf Queen; Rob Hazle, who will be known to Peterborough audiences as John in Peter Pan returns in the role of Chef JeanPaul. Plus Key Theatre stalwart Robin Johnson (Abanazar in Aladdin, King Rat in Dick Whittington) returns to play Belle’s father – Monsieur deDum deDum deDum.
To sign up, go to vivacity.org/auditions or pick up a paper form from the Key Theatre.

Safe Barbecues
Summer's here – and whatever the weather, us Brits love our barbeques! By Eileen Le Voi, Safe Local Trades & Service
www.safelocaltrades.com A great excuse for a spot of alfresco dining with family and friends, the popular social gathering offers the chance for the fellas to show off their grill skills, the ladies to rustle up a tasty summer punch and the kids to have endless fun. If this sounds like your ideal BBQ (and what’s not to love?) then don’t allow anything to spoil it. The sad fact is that barbecues are involved in many hundreds of accidents that occur in the garden each year. Last time figures were collected through the Home and Leisure Accident Surveillance System (HASS/LASS) in 2002, an estimated 1,800 people visited A&E in the UK having had an accident involving a barbecue.
The most common types of barbecue-related accidents as shown by the HASS/LASS figures were: • Burn/scald/other injury related to fire or flame – 800 • Cut/tear by sharp edges - 200 The vast majority of barbecue accidents (1,400) happened in a home setting. Some of the accidents lead to very serious burns, usually as a result of using an accelerant such as petrol to light the fuel. However, planning ahead and following some simple safety tips will ensure you BBQ is fun-filled and not a flaming failure. To protect you, family and your home, it is advisable to have working fire alarms in your property and to generally be fire-safety savvy.
And it’s not just barbecues that can cause an outdoor hazard: • Ensure all lanterns and candles with a naked flame are fully extinguished when you leave the garden. • Never leave children unattended in or near inflatable pools or similar if they contain water. The same applies to garden ponds. Take care also when visiting other people’s gardens - children can drown in less than 3cm of water. • Clear away unused garden hoses and tools – which can be easily tripped over. • And finally, protect and secure your home and garden by securely locking back gates, sheds, garages and windows on balmy evenings.
Simple Safety Tips • Keep your barbecues away from flammable garden furniture. • Move your barbecue away from sheds, fences, overhanging branches and foliage and never light it in an enclosed space. • Never leave a barbecue unattended. • Never let children too close to the barbecue. • Use only recognised firelighters or starter fuels on charcoal barbecues. • If you’re a gas barbecue user, ensure the tap is off before changing the cylinder. • When choosing a barbecue, stability is essential - ensure the one you choose is strong and sturdy • Check your barbecue is in good condition (particularly if you have not used it for some time) and look for loose or damaged parts that may need adjustment or repair.

You can scale up the ingredients but don’t scrimp on the teabags. You need all the flavour. Instructions Put plenty of crushed ice into a tall glass. Pour over the syrup; add the tea, ginger beer, Stir gently to combine. Garnish with an orange wedge, lychees on a cocktail stick, and cocktail umbrellas.
Le-Ki-Pi Serves 2 Ingredients 1 kiwi 3 pineapple cubes (tinned is fine. Remove them from the can and freeze them to use as required!) Honey to taste Good quality lemonade (Fever tree is excellent) or lemon sparkling water. Mint to garnish
The Perfect Virgin Bloody Mary Savoury and spicy. The perfect predinner mocktail. Serves 2 Ingredients 500 ml tomato juice Juice of 1 lemon 1 tsp fresh horseradish (more if you like it hot) Splash of Worcestershire sauce Celery salt White pepper Tabasco sauce Method Place plenty of crushed ice in a large glass jug. Mix the tomato juice and lemon juice and pour it straight over the ice. Add the horseradish, 3 shakes of Worcestershire sauce and Tabasco to taste. Then add a pinch of celery salt and white pepper. Stir until the outside of the jug feels cold, then strain the cocktail into 2 tall glasses. Top up with fresh ice, and garnish with a celery stick and olives or a lemon slice.
No alcohol allowed? No problem. Enjoy a mocktail instead. By Kelly Taylor People don’t drink alcohol for many reasons: pregnancy, medication, religious reasons, designated driver status…or because they just don’t drink alcohol (like me!). It used to bug me at social gatherings when people asked me what I wanted to drink, reeling off a whole list of possibilities: gin and tonic, vodka and orange, rum and coke, and I’d say, ‘Do you have anything non-alcoholic?’ and the choice would be tonic without the gin, orange without the vodka or coke without the rum! I became adept at creating my own non-alcoholic drinks which felt ‘special’. Along the way I discovered that lots of my friends drink alcohol at parties because of the lack of alternatives! People who do drink alcohol would LOVE to have a non-alcoholic option too, and recently the mocktail (mock cocktail) has been gaining popularity. Here’s how to turn any cocktail into a delicious mocktail and delight your non-alcohol-drinking friends. The key element in most good mocktails is something sparkly. This elevates the drink and makes it feel more special than glass of juice. Any cocktail recipe which uses club soda, tonic water, ginger ale, or ginger beer will probably translate to a good mocktail. Some non-sparkly drinks translate well too. These tend to be the spicy ones like Bloody Marys, where you don’t miss the alcoholic component. Flavour is everything. Mocktails should be special, so try something different. Start with the syrups. Buy good quality
ones (Bottle Green cordials work brilliantly and come in a range of amazing flavours - I love Rhubarb and Ginger) or make your own, it’s simple. Combine one-part sugar (white or brown), honey or agave syrup, and one-part water with fresh fruit, herbs, or spices to add flavour. Simmer over medium heat until the mixture is completely liquid. Strain, cool and use to flavour your mocktails. Try infusing your drinks with fresh fruit and herbs. A bunch of mint or basil, or a sprig of lavender or rosemary takes a mocktail to the next level, as does fruit. Layer on more flavour with the garnish. Dip the rims of glasses in flavoured salts or sugars, and use citrus slices, pineapple, olives or other fresh ingredients to add flavour and fragrance to your drink to make it a sensory experience. Cocktail umbrellas and decorative sparklers won’t add flavour, but they do make any drink look more celebratory. Don’t forget the ice. Lots of ice. You can buy bags of it for a party if making it ahead of time is too much hassle. Does every cocktail translate to a mocktail? Well no…drinks with only two ingredients don't really work, because as previously stated, a rum and coke without the rum is just coke right? And I find the sweet ones can be a bit cloying for me and taste too ‘desserty’ but if you have a sweet tooth knock yourself out. My youngest loves a virgin pinacolada. And talking of children, making mocktails is a great summer holiday project the whole family can all enjoy! Have fun.

Cygnets Preschool Cygnets Preschool have had lots of fun and excitement with our sports day and our 150 year family action celebrations at Ferry Meadows with all our families. We are all looking forward to our trip to Hamerton Zoo and the Exotic Pets will be visiting us as an end of the year treat. The end of the academic year is almost upon us and the children have been busy rehearsing for the Hungry Caterpillar end of the year show A massive thank you to all our families and local businesses that have supported us throughout the year
Girlguiding is the leading charity for girls and young women. We’ve been around for over 100 years and a lot has changed during that time! Girlguiding has developed Future Girl after consultation and research with 76,000 girls in guiding, aged 4-25. Girls and young women shared their concerns, hopes and ideas about the world and their lives. The topics that girls of all ages care about the most - such as bullying, gender stereotypes, appearance pressures, and the environment shaped Future Girl. 36,309 Brownies (ages 7-10) told us they want to live in a world where people care about the environment and recycling. In response to that from September 30th – 6th October we are having a week of Action on Plastic. This could be anything from a litter pick to creating a sculpture out of rubbish or shouting out about recycling on social media. Girlguiding supports girls to Take Action about the things there are passionate about. Could you help us to inspire girls and ignite their enthusiasm? Girlguiding runs out of school activities for girls aged 5 – 18 and all of our adult members are volunteers. We are always looking for more volunteers who can help us maintain existing units and open new units to ensure that more girls have the opportunity to be part of Girlguiding. In the Hampton area we are looking for two volunteers to support our well established and thriving Guide unit that meets on Wednesday evenings. We are also aiming to open a Ranger unit for girls aged 14-18 and have enough interest from girls to open further Rainbows and Brownies units. But we desperately need more volunteers to support these units. Volunteering with Girlguiding is flexible and fun. You don’t have to commit to a weekly session, every other week, monthly or holiday guiding are all options. If you’re not sure about working with the girls directly then maybe you can use your other skills to support a unit with admin tasks. Or you might be able to share a specific skill or talent with the girls as a one-off session. Girlguiding is for all girls, we give girls a voice, we give girls their own space and we change as the girls change. Could you help us inspire the next generation of women? Find out more about the fantastic opportunities for girls and women: www.girlguiding.org.uk/ Or call Jennie Grove, Growth & Communities Coordinator: 07494 633 431 or jennie.grove@girlguiding.org.uk

Folksworth Preschool As the term draws to a close we would like to thank everyone who has supported us over the last academic year. We have to say the preschool fete surpassed our expectations and was an amazing afternoon in the sun. It was wonderful to see our community come together to raise money to support the ongoing development of our preschool. So a huge thank you to everyone who came along, sponsored us, ran a stall or cooked a sausage. Your support is greatly appreciated. The preschool team would like to say good luck to those leaving us at the end of term, it’s been lovely to see you grow and develop. We are looking forward to a busy autumn term with our new children. Just a quick reminder to book your child’s place with us for theJanuary and April 2019 terms as places are limited.
By the time you are reading this we will have started our summer break at Mini Movers! To all our children leaving us to start their exciting journey into Reception, we will miss seeing you at our sessions and we wish all the very best with school life. Those of you returning to us in September, we are looking forward to hearing all about your summer activities! We are a stay and play session for mums, dads, grandparents or carers with a child from newborn to reception age. We have a weekly craft activity and group singalong which the children love! We meet 1.15pm till 2.45pm Monday (term time only) at the Hampton Vale Community Centre. It’s just £1 per family which includes refreshments.

Hampton Hargate Primary School Another school year has ended and now seems a good time to reflect upon all the great things that have been happening at Hampton Hargate. It’s been a busy term with sports days, trips, Careers Week, a visit from Danny Butler Extreme Mountain Biking Show and the Year 6 Residential, packed with activities including the high/ low ropes, zip wire and archery. Year 3&4 children, meanwhile, participated in den building and treasure hunts at Ferry Meadows, Reception went to Hamerton Zoo and Year 2 visited the seaside at Hunstanton! Our Summer Fun Day on 6 July was a success despite the awful weather and we were very pleased to see so many people supporting our event! Thank you! In other news – well done to our Cresset Dancers who took part in the Festival at the end of June - they made us very proud. Well done also to our footballers who won the Plate at the Youth Dreams competition and everyone who took part in our very own Race for Life on 7 June. Congratulations to the awesome team of ladies from Hampton Hargate who completed the Race for Life at Ferry Meadows and raised well over £1000! And finally, goodbye and good luck to our Year 6 pupils as they leave Hampton Hargate Primary School and move on to their new secondary school. We are certainly ready for a summer break and look forward to seeing everyone in September!
Enjoy your summer! Our first session back in the new term is Monday 9 September. The sessions are run by volunteers from KingsGate Community Church. Contact Rachael 07983 421139 for more information or search Hampton Mini Movers on Facebook, or just pop along, no need to book.

DIY divorce and the pitfalls
Lender acceptance of tax calculations and overviews HMRC have published an updated list of mortgage providers and lenders who accept a SA302 tax calculation and a tax year overview. Although the recent update is only minor - the Cambridge Building Society has been added to the list - this provides an opportunity to remind readers about this list and where to find it. Many mortgage providers and other lenders have agreed with HMRC that, as evidence of income the lenders will accept tax calculations and tax year overviews that taxpayers or agents have printed from commercial software or online tax accounts. The list relates to the documentation needed as evidence of income in a loan or mortgage application. This list can be found at https://bit.ly/2RQu3uE
Change of address Bird & Co are moving from their current address in Holme Road Yaxley to 183 Main Street Yaxley (previously known as Sophie T’s vintage tea room). An exact date for the move is not known as internal changes are being done, but a rough date will be the end of July/early August 2019. Further details will be announced in due course, but all of our client’s will be notified as will everyone else. Further details will be in the September 2019 edition.
Separated spouses are increasingly taking advantage of the on-line service provided by the Family Courts, which is not yet available nationwide, but will soon be coming to your area. For a number of years spouses have also been able to download the forms for a DIY divorce and when the circumstances are straightforward, this can work successfully. It is always desirable to save on legal costs where possible and handling your own divorce proceedings can be a sensible way to achieve this. But if there is any legal complexity that you are unsure about, don’t plough on regardless and see if you can get it past the Family Court. It could end up with you having to pay extra court fees and taking twice as long if there is a technical hitch and paying for some legal advice in the early stages would have been worth it. It is also very important to understand the significance of applying for financial remedy provisions in the Petition. This does not mean you will be starting court proceedings for finances, but it could be vital for the future if such a step becomes unavoidable, that you have put down your marker at the early stages in your divorce petition. Divorce is hopefully a one-off experience for most people – make sure you get it right and invest in a family law specialist.

Add some variety to your fitness regime When we think of the gym we usually picture ourselves jogging on a treadmill, or pounding a cross-trainer, non-stop for 45 minutes. Some people love it, and get a real buzz from a session, but if you're like me you'll count every single second as you wait for the torture to stop. What if you could get more health benefits by doing just half the exercise? When I heard this was a possibility at the gym I attend I couldn’t sign-up fast enough. Enter HIIT, High Intensity Interval Training (pronounced ‘hit’). HIIT involves short periods, 30 seconds or so, of high intensity exercise followed by equally short rest periods which you repeat for around 20 to 30 minutes. The idea is to work as hard as you possibly can during each work session, then catch your breath, then repeat. At the end of the whole work out you should be totally exhausted. At this point you might be thinking that the 45-minute gentle jog isn't sounding so bad after all, but HIIT has a number of real advantages. Each work period can be a different exercise. Some can be cardio; some can be strength exercises. This keeps the workout interesting (good if like me you are easily bored) and also gives you the twin benefits of improving fitness and building muscle.
fitforlife
By Mark O’Keefe
High intensity exercise burns more calories and more fat. Because you are working flat out your body needs to expend a lot more energy. It can't keep pace with your needs by simply burning easily accessible temporary carbohydrate stores, so it has to start burning fat. It also needs a lot more oxygen which is why you get out of breath. But this raises your body's metabolism to a much higher level than simply jogging. So, when you finish exercise your body stays in this high-energy state for much longer burning even more calories. Your whole body has to work a lot harder to keep up with the exercise, especially your heart. In fact HIIT strengthens your whole cardiovascular system. It's also very good at reducing insulin resistance (one of the precursors to type ll diabetes) which makes it much easier for your body to regulate your blood sugar, as well as helping to high blood pressure, the risk of heart disease, cancer, obesity and more. HIIT is easily tailored to any fitness level. If you pop to your local gym, you'll usually find beginner, intermediate and advanced level sessions. But if the gym really isn't your thing, it’s easy to do a HIIT work out at home. There are lots of apps and videos to help you out.

business sense
Get that
Job By Hilary Bennett
Avoid common cover letter errors ... Don’t use the same cover letter for every single job. If you send identical cover letters for every single role, it may save you time, but it won’t get you the job. Generic phrases which offer no specificity about the company, industry, or role you’re applying for indicate lack of interest to most hiring managers. Always refer to the job by its title and description and explain how your skills could benefit the specific role and company, not just the industry as a whole.
Never talk about your personal life in a professional document
This definitely won’t improve your employability. Don’t mention the reasons for leaving your current job or give overly detailed justifications for career breaks. Keep to the point and focus on the job you’re applying for.
Focus on what the employer wants, not what you want.
Avoid detailing your hopes and dreams and don’t explain what you’d get out of the job. A cover letter isn’t about being able to fulfil your objectives, it’s about proving to a recruiter than you can fulfil theirs. So, talk about your achievements, skills, and experience only if they relate directly to the role and emphasise what they would get from employing you, not vice versa. If you lack experience in a certain area don’t focus on that, instead focus on your strong points which are a good fit for the job.
Desperation is different to enthusiasm! Begging for the job isn’t going to add anything to your selling potential. Keep over-the-top adjectives and hyperbole to a minimum because there’s a fine line between showing a genuine interest and trying too hard. Don’t forget to proofread and check for grammatical errors.
HAMPTON LIBRARY Job Club Thinking about taking that next step in your career? Maybe you’re looking at getting back into work? Hampton’s job club runs every Friday 9:30 -11am and can help you polish your CV and find the job you’ve been looking for!
