SERPENTINE GREEN IS GETTING BIGGER AND BETTER Next to expand and M&S Simply Food to join line-up at Serpentine Green
Construction work is starting on a £7 million extension to Serpentine Green, with Next signed up to open an expanded 10,000 sq. ft. store in one of the new units being created. The fashion retailer will open with M&S Simply Food moving
into the space vacated by Next, and due to open in time for Christmas 2017. The works, including a further three stores to the front of the existing building, will add to a varied retail line-up which includes River Island, Clarks,
Boots, H&M, Outfit, New Look, and Tesco Extra. Additional work is being carried out to improve the public space directly in front of the centre, with a new pedestrian square including cycle parking linked to a cycle route through the car park.

CHARITY SPORTS DAY
for ‘Natalie’s Neurones’ The Hampton 5-aside football team organized a charity sports day on 3 September for ‘Natalie’s Neurones’ in support of a lady in Peterborough with motor neurone disease. Despite the heavy rain, hundreds of people came to play football and netball to support this very worthwhile cause. The day was a complete success with over £3,000 being raised for Natalie and her family!
CAN YOU HELP?
Natalie was a fit, healthy and active mum of two, who played football for Peterborough ladies but then found out she had this awful disease. Since then she has been made redundant and because she is now unable to work things are very difficult for her financially.
If you are interested in making a donation to Natalie’s Neurones or you are able to help in any other way, please visit the ‘Natalie’s Neurones’ just giving page crowdfunding.justgiving.com/NataliesNeurones
Girlguilding volunteers required As Hampton continues to expand we are looking for more volunteers who have a few hours each week to support Girlguiding in Hampton. Hampton currently has one Rainbow unit, two Brownie units and one Guide unit. With a growing waiting list, we have many more girls we would love to offer a place to and with your time and support we could do this.
CAN YOU HELP?
You would be part of a friendly and enthusiastic team, whose aim is to offer the girls a wide range of new experiences and skills whilst having fun at the same time! You will help organise indoor and outdoor games, crafts and challenges and support the girls as they try new activities.
If this could be you, log onto girlguiding.org.uk/interested We look forward to hearing from you.

Lakota (Lover of Nature)
Winter wonderland
Hard frosts, and possibly snow, indicate that winter is truly upon us in Hampton. Except for the evergreens the trees are bare and have a stark beauty against dark wintry skies.
A
nimals and birds face their strongest challenge of the year, that is, to survive the freezing temperatures and lack of food. Grey squirrels, of which there are plenty around Hampton will seek out their winter stores of nuts, so carefully hidden during the autumn months. They do not hibernate whereas hedgehogs and bats (tiny pipistrelles around Hampton) do. Hedgehogs build a hibernacula, which in Latin means ‘a tent for winter quarters’. They create this in a safe place, from leaves, and keep a temperature within it of between 0 and 5 degrees Celsius. Bats find hollows in trees, or spaces in buildings to hibernate. They stay there all
8
winter unless the temperature rises above 10 degrees Celsius. If this occurs they will wake and look for food. Despite this deep suspended animation, it is estimated that between 30% and 60% of bats and hedgehogs do not make it to spring. December, with its lead up to Christmas, means the search for evergreens to brighten the hearth and house with greenness and red berries. Both holly and ivy leaves are used for wreaths which adorn front doors. The berries also provide valuable winter food for both birds and mammals. Robins, which are a strong feature of Christmas cards, are one of the few birds that can be
heard singing during winter, as both males and females maintain territories for feeding during this period, which may be their breeding territories when spring arrives. Around Christmas time robins begin exploring other robins’ territories looking for a mate. They then pair up by midJanuary and females stop singing. I can’t say that I have seen any mistletoe around Hampton but there may be some because small amounts can be found throughout Britain, but the majority is found in the southwest midlands. It is another festive plant that is associated strongly with the Christmas festival. It grows in fruit trees, its favourite
host being the cultivated apple, as well as the lime, poplars and hawthorns. It is a semi-parasitic plant that feeds off its host but does also has chlorophyll in its leaves and can therefore produce some of its food through photosynthesis. According to Norse legend Frigga, the goddess of love and marriage, had a son who was killed with an arrow of mistletoe. Heartbroken Frigga wept and her tears became the mistletoe’s white berries, which brought Balder back to life. Frigga was so overjoyed that she blessed the plant and said that whoever stood beneath it would be kissed. Thus the plant became a symbol of love and peace.

Christ the Servant King Each year, we hear again the ancient, yet timeless, Christmas story. Each year, we retell the astonishing entrance that God made into our broken world. The mystery of God was somehow concentrated in a child; the length, breadth, depth and height of God's love was somehow expressed in this little one. The God who lived in the highest heavens above chose another address; He decided to come and live among us. The Christmas story we hear each year is the same but we are different. Our world is different. Joy and sorrow, laughter and tears, sickness and health, life and death have all wrought changes, for better or for worse in our lives. But no matter what changes we have undergone, what losses we have mourned, what gains we have celebrated, the Christmas story speaks to us again of new birth, and
Christmas at CSK
the possibility of our own rebirth. It tells us that things can be different, because God was prepared to reduce Himself to the dimensions of a new-born child 2000 years ago. With the birth of this child a new adventure in faith begins. A new approach to God is opened up for us, a new way of relating to each other is asked of us. It may be an old story, but it is one that is always pregnant with new hope. Come and join us at one of our many Christmas events advertised here in the Gazette. We’d really love to welcome you as we celebrate and share the love of Jesus this December.

with Art in the Park
Following a successful request to Arts Council England, Nene Park Trust is pleased to announce that Charron Pugsley-Hill will become the first ever artist-in-residence for a year until September 2017.
C
harron is an internationally working artist and previously a wildlife conservationist with Natural England who has been based in Peterborough for over 20 years and has a wealth of knowledge and experience of the Park. She creates large, colourful paintings based on her interaction with the natural world and has recently worked on installations, live demonstrations, workshops and textile work. Charron is known for her public engagement successes, collaborating with schools and organisations to create artwork that connects people to the beauty of nature. Earlier in the year, Charron created the 'Sky of Poppies' textile art installation at Queensgate Centre, Peterborough, commemorating the Battle of the Somme. Over the next 12 months and with Charron's help, the Trust will be expanding the range of art-based activities on offer at Nene Park. This will include seasonal sketching workshops and walks, creation of a tapestry in collaboration with local volunteers, nature-based art workshops with local art students and a week of activities encouraging families to appreciate and participate in art in the Park. Charron
will lead the programme of events whilst creating her Park-inspired work, which will be exhibited in a beautiful natural setting during the residence period. The residence period will also allow the Trust to expand its connections with the wider creative community in Peterborough, providing local artists with increased opportunities to use the Park as inspiration for their artistic activities. Charron Pugsley-Hill says “I am absolutely thrilled to have been appointed to work with Nene Park Trust in a place that I personally have spent many happy hours over my time in Peterborough. It’s so exciting to have the opportunity to share and engage others in my colourful energetic art that will be inspired by this precious place and the people that come there to enjoy all it has to offer. I am truly grateful to the Trust and The Arts Council for this opportunity for myself and the people of Peterborough and look forward to creating art that will inspire and enthuse over the coming months” This fantastic opportunity has been made possible thanks to public funding by the National Lottery through Arts Council England.
OPEN STUDIO Saturday 3 December Head for Longthorpe Tower Charron Pugsley-Hill is delighted to open her studio for one day for a special Christmas event. There will be a lovely pre festive atmosphere, drinks, cakes and the opportunity to meet Charron, tour the studio, view her work and browse a variety of beautiful gifts, prints and artisan cards. Also new work from her Art Residency post with Nene Park Trust at Ferry Meadows Country Park one of the most visited parks in the country. This is also #smallbusinesssaturday so why not come and buy some presents for family friends and yourself. All are welcome - please do come and say hello, share and invite your friends and support local business this festive season.

Double award win
Regal Park Property Company has scooped two prestigious awards, ‘Best Estate Agents in Peterborough’ and ‘Best Estate Agents in PE7’, both voted for by customers. The awards were run by AllAgents.co.uk, the UK's largest customer review website for the property industry. Regal Park is one of Peterborough's newest, established, independent property companies. Launched in 2014 by local entrepreneur, James Trigg, he and his team have a combined 30 years' estate agency experience in the Peterborough area. James Trigg, Managing Director, said: "To win both ‘Best Estate Agents in Peterborough’, and ‘Best Estate Agents in PE7’ is a great achievement for the Regal Park team. "From day one, our aim and ethos has been to change people's perception of estate agents and improve their customer experience. Being voted the best in the city - as well as in our PE7 postcode area, where Regal Park is based, proves that we've tapped into exactly what customers want when they move home.
"Customer service is our number one priority and behind everything we do. Combining this ethos with our wealth of experience in buying and selling property in Peterborough means we're the estate agent people are choosing to use." As well as outstanding customer service and experience, Regal Park is proactive in the ways it interacts with customers. The team uses texts, emails and social media, and its website works optimally on mobile phones and tablets too.
So what's next for this awardwinning property company? "We're going to continue building on our successes, and working to give customers what they want – an easy and straightforward move. We also have plans to expand our business into other services.

YOUNGSTERS TAKE A
SPLASH
WITH NEW WATER SPORT FACILITIES More Peterborough youngsters will have the chance to get afloat, with the opening of a new waters sports base for Sea Cadets and young rowers at Teardrop Lake in the Hamptons.
P
eterborough Sea Cadets Commanding OďŹƒcer, Sub Lieutenant (SCC) Tass Pitsikas RNR, said the new facility is a 'dream' come to fruition, and will allow more young people to take part in a wider range of water sports. Teardrop Lake, in the northeast corner of the Hamptons, will eventually be the focus of the planned Hampton Beach waterfront village development. The Sea Cadets and the newly formed Hereward Rowing Club have been granted exclusive early use of the lake by O&H Hampton, who have provided facilities including an access road and slipway. It will be used by Cadets, the Rowing Club which caters for junior rowers and local schools who work with the Rowing Club. The new centre was formally opening on Sunday 6 November with an event attended by Peterborough Mayor David Sanders
and Rio 2016 Paralympics Rowing Gold Medalist James Fox, whose father Steve is a Hereward Rowing Club coach. Star of the occasion was Lt (SCC) Colin Marshall RNR Ret who joined the Peterborough Sea Cadets in their founding year, 1942, and is still an active volunteer at the age of 89. The new facility has been named The Colin Marshall Sailing Centre in his honour. SLt Pitsikas, a Sea Cadet volunteer instructor who is a former Greek Navy mine clearance diver, said: "Since I joined Peterborough Sea Cadets nine years ago it's been an aspiration to make the unit a centre of excellence in water sports training. "Previously we were restricted to training on the river and could only do rowing and kayaking, now we can expand to sailing and windsurfing and increase the
number of cadets we have on the water at any time. "I want to thank O&H Hampton, and particularly Roger Tallowin who has been a fantastic sponsor and ambassador for us, for helping us to bring our dreams and aspirations to fruition." For O&H Hampton, Roger said the agreement is a 'win-win' situation:
We are delighted that
Teardrop Lake can be enjoyed by people who know how to use the facilities safely and responsibly, and get the best out of them. Although currently only the Sea Cadets have access to the lake, in a few years it will be opened as yet more public open space for the community to enjoy.
Peterborough is home to one of the oldest Sea Cadet units in the country. It currently caters for 90 local girls and boys aged 10-18 who take part in a range of nautical and adventure activities with volunteer instructors.

A new chapter begins at Busy Bees Nursery

he nursery, which is based on Hargate Way, relaunched in September after a refurbishment and will now be taken forward by a new manager who has been with the company for almost 10 years. Heidi Cassidy, who is also a mum of one, started out at Busy Bees in 2007 in a part-time role and is very well-known amongst the local community and will be a popular appointment with parents. Heidi will be working with a new senior team who will be aiming to bring in lots of fresh ideas to accompany the new look nursery, which boasts bright and spacious rooms,

bright and welcoming décor, and the latest recourses and play equipment. Commenting on her appointment, Heidi said: “It’s a really exciting time for the nursery and I’m humbled to become the new manager. I’ve always been a very positive person and would like to continue in that vein when leading the team here. I’ve worked my way up through the nursery and know the local area very well so will be hoping to bring a fresh outlook and approach in line with families and children’s needs. “It’s great to have a dedicated senior team to work with and

we have plenty of experience between us to ensure that the childcare we provide offers not only the best care, but is engaging and delivered within a home-from-home environment, helping to give many children in the area a great start in life and provide the building blocks for their future.” The nursery has also recruited a new head chef as it moves into a new era. Samantha Nash joins the new look team with 22 years’ worth of catering experience having worked in several settings previously. She said: “I’m really excited about this new challenge and being given the opportunity
to work with a new team and company that has been recognised for its commitment to providing a fresh, healthy and award-winning menu. All food is freshly prepared and cooked within the nursery and free from harmful additives, which is why the UK Soil Association handed Busy Bees the silver award. It’s one of the things I’m excited about and feel very strongly about providing children with nutritious, healthy meals in their early years.” Busy Bees nursery in Peterborough is part of the award winning Busy Bees nursery group, the UK’s largest provider of quality childcare.

EDUCATION Young Gazette Little Acorns We would like to wish you all a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year! Choosing the right nursery
Choosing a nursery school can be confusing but making the right choice will give your child a great head start in life. Sending your child to nursery school teaches them to communicate, develop physically and creatively. It helps them to develop their social skills, encourages independence and allows them the opportunity to form friendships and most importantly introduces structure and routine to help for primary school. At Little Acorns, our aim is to provide your child with the highest standard of care and support to your child’s time with us to make it enjoyable whilst they learn though our teaching methods.
Montessori teaching We incorporate the national curriculum with the Montessori teaching method, as part of the government promoted teaching method and the Montessori way, there are activities and learning goals that are appropriate for each age group throughout the day. The Montessori methods fundamental focus is on the needs, talents and special individuality of each child. We believe children learn best in their own way and at their own pace. The child controls the pace, topic and repetition
of lessons in a controlled goal oriented environment. The motivational concept is the encouragement of the child’s natural joy of learning which is an instinctive part of any child. When properly guided the method results in a well adjusted person who has purpose and direction in their life. At Little Acorns we remain dedicated to our goals and constantly re evaluate our services to make sure we offer parents and children a standard of childcare that is second to none.
What we have been up to
It’s the time of year where we have been celebrating different festivals and events. The children have enjoyed celebrating diwali, Halloween and bonfire night. The children made lanterns and coloured in rangoli patterns to celebrate Diwali. Dressed up for Halloween and had a party, and firework and bonfire pictures using glitters and spray paints.

Fundraising and collections have seen money raised for Children in Need, Operation Christmas Shoebox and the Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal. Hampton College The first two weeks back at HC have whizzed by and dare I say it… we are on the countdown to Christmas! There have been so many student successes it would be impossible to mention them all but HC really do have some very talented actors, singers, performers and so many incredible sportsmen and women. The Girls under 13s secured another win in the 3rd round of the English Schools FA Cup: 14 -1 against Spalding. Congratulations Zach Bradshaw who has won Serpentine Green’s Reading Hero competition. We are very impressed with all the hard work that Zach has done to improve his reading skills, his love of books and how he uses this to help others with their reading. What a fabulous achievement! A good start to the Indoor Rowing season with Kings and Hampton battling it out. This is one to watch. Good Luck to all our Business Studies teams who have successfully had loans secured in the Tycoons in School competition this year and those trading in the Tenner challenge. They explored the Bronze Age site, discovered some of its treasures and took on the role of archaeologist for the day! Meanwhile our Year 6 children met a WW1 soldier on their visit to Hampton Library where they wrote some fab poems about the soldiers who passed through Peterborough!

A woman who discovered that her civil partner, who died Intestate in 2013, had hidden assets worth millions of pounds during the dissolution of their relationship has won a legal battle at the Court of Appeal as she seeks to set aside the original “unfair” settlement. The Judgment confirms that same sex couples have the same rights as heterosexual partners under Family Law and reiterates the message that dishonesty will not be tolerated by the Court. Helen Roocroft was in an 18 year relationship with her civil partner, Carol Ainscow, when the two separated in 2009. Ms Ainscow died aged 55 after battling a brain tumour. After her death evidence was discovered that she may have
misled the Court about her true wealth during the dissolution of their civil partnership. This led to Ms Roocroft accepting a much lower financial settlement than she was entitled to. The Judgment handed down on 14.10.2016 said that Ms Roocroft had submitted evidence suggesting that “Ms Ainscow’s income at the time of the settlement was three times that which she had stated in a Court document”. It is clear that there will be legal consequences if partners whether in marriage or civil partnerships try to get out of their obligations to their former partners by being deliberately obstructive or dishonest about their wealth and assets.

BITS BYTES Time to resurrect your old laptop?
BITS & BYTES With a technology that dates back to the 1950s, harddisk drives feature a spindle that moves over a rotating magnetic platter grabbing data like an old-school record-player needle drawing sound from a vinyl LP.
T
his has now changed with the invention of the Solid State Drive (SSD). There are no moving parts so the speed improvement is at least 10 times faster as it’s able to read and write data infinitely faster than a hard drive. If you want a fast, responsive computer, and why wouldn't you, it’s time to get a solid-state drive (SSD). When it comes to overall performance, a laptop's storage drive is much more important than other components, like its CPU, RAM and graphics chip. As you boot the computer, open applications and switch between tasks, your processor is tapping its fingers waiting for data to load from the disk. Even if you're not opening files, transferring data or launching apps, your operating system and software are using virtual memory in the background.
Computer man recently upgraded a laptop with an Intel Core i5 processor and 8 GB of RAM from an older style hard drive to a brand new Solid State Drive, and the time it took to load Word 2016 dropped from 31.9 seconds to 1.8 seconds. Loading the Chrome browser went from 14 seconds to 1.1 seconds and Excel went from 19.9 seconds to 1.8 seconds. A HUGE difference! If you're worried about your laptop breaking, you definitely want a Solid State Drive. SSDs are much more likely to survive a fall, because they don't have delicate needles and platters. Whether you're buying a new laptop or trying to breathe new life into an older computer, you can save a lot of money by swapping out the original factory installed hard drive with a SSD. You’ll end up with a computer running faster than it ever has!
To enquire about the cost of this upgrade including your current data transfer please call computer man on 01733 244544 or visit www.pctechnical.co.uk. Computer Man is based in Hampton and has provided on-site computer support since 1999.

‘Slinky’ slimmer is set to
in time for party season!
Emma Trigg is looking forward to this Christmas party season more than ever before after losing one-and-a-half stone and being named Hampton’s ‘Miss Slinky’ 2016.
T
he 36 year-old has dropped a fantastic two dress sizes since joining the Hampton Hargate Slimming World group in July this year, and now her impressive transformation has seen her fellow slimmers vote for her as their group’s representative in the national competition. Emma, who weighed 11 stone 10.5 wore a dress size 14 at her heaviest and is now a ‘slinky’ 10 stone 3 and a dress size 10, says that she was delighted to be named the Hampton Slimming World group’s winner. “I was already really looking forward to this Christmas and finally feeling comfortable enough in my own skin to enjoy socialising and perhaps finally wear the outfits I always dreamed of. Winning the title of Miss Slinky means I have even more to celebrate.” “Being voted for by the other people in the group is lovely, it’s thanks to them that I’ve been able to lose the weight that I have. I was very nervous when I first walked through the doors of the group because I expected everyone to judge me, but everyone was so friendly and welcoming. I’ve made lots of friends and I love swapping recipes and ideas every week. My Consultant Nat has been so supportive too; she’s positive and enthusiastic and is always at the end of the phone if I need her.”
After joining Slimming World, Emma began following the organisation’s Food Optimising healthy eating plan and was amazed to discover that she didn’t have to give up her favourite meals: “I eat the same things now as before – curries, roast dinners, pasta dishes – but they’re all made from scratch and I still eat out too – I just make healthier choices.” Nat Fryer, who runs the Hampton Hargate group which Emma attends, hopes she will demonstrate to other people what’s possible with Slimming World. She says: “As Emma shows, whether you’ve got a little or a lot of weight to lose, slimming down can make a big difference to how you feel about yourself. She’s happier and healthier than ever – the group love hearing Emma’s weight loss journey and her ideas. She’s such an active part of our group - I couldn’t be prouder of her.” “People might be put off joining a slimming group just before Christmas, but taking that first step if you’re unhappy about your weight could be the best gift you give yourself. Our eating plan is so generous that you won’t have to miss out on any of your festive favourites and there’s lots going on in group so it’ll be lots of fun too – at Slimming World we know how to make Christmas extra special!”

Q. Can you tell us some more about the treatments you offer.
A. Elysia also offer LipoFirm which works in a similar way. It releases fat using Radio-Frequency which heats the fatty cells up and secretes the liquid from them which is then drained using a lymphatic draining mechanism. The body reshaping takes place by applying RadioFrequency energy, which causes collagen and elastins to contract immediately and enhances long-term collagen rejuvenation. The best thing about this procedure is all three of these stages happen at once, there’s no downtime, it’s virtually pain-free and you can see results in just one treatment.

LIGHTS OF LOVE CAROL CONCERT Sunday 11 December 6pm Sue Ryder Thorpe Hall Hospice For hundreds of people across the area, Lights of Love has become a key event in the festive calendar. This year’s event, taking place on Sunday 11 December will focus on giving guests the opportunity to remember, reflect and celebrate the lives of people close to them. The centrepiece will, as usual, be Thorpe Hall’s Lights of Love trees, decked out with handwritten messages of love, remembrance and inspiration. Peterborough Concert Band will be playing a selection of favourite carols for guests to join in with and Hereward Harmony Barbershop Chorus will be providing entertainment with festive songs. While the carol concert will take place outside, with the mansion house as the backdrop, Thorpe Hall’s Coffee Shop will be open for traditional warming snacks. The entertainment will start at 6pm in the grounds of Thorpe Hall Hospice, in Longthorpe, Peterborough and finish at 7.15pm. Entrance is free.
Event organiser Suzanne Ostler said: “Lights of Love is a favourite with so many people who see it as the start of their festive celebrations. It’s a lovely way to remember and celebrate the lives of special people with family and friends in the run up to Christmas. “This year our focus at the event will be our Lights of Love trees and the carol concert so we’re hoping all our guests will bring their best voices with them – along with scarves, gloves and hats to keep warm.”

Once you have your login details you will then be able to sign in securely.

Claiming VAT back on a Motor Car Purchase
Generally speaking, the purchase of any vehicle where there is any element of private use means any reclaim of VAT may be restricted. HMRC’s website offers the following guidance: • You may be able to reclaim all the VAT on a new car if you use it only for business • The car must not be available for private use, and you must be able to show that it isn’t, e.g. it’s specified in your employee’s contract • Private use includes travelling between home and work, unless it’s a temporary place of work Due to the private use restriction, it is usual that no VAT can be recovered on the purchase of a car. However, you may be able to claim all the VAT on a new car if it’s mainly used: • As a taxi • For driving instruction • For self-drive hire If you are buying a commercial vehicle, you can usually reclaim the VAT e.g. a van, a lorry or a tractor. You can only reclaim the VAT if you use the vehicle in a VAT registered business.
