Welcome to your May edition of Hampton Gazette. Since the first arrivals on Holly Walk in Hampton Hargate more than 20 years ago, over 5,800 new homes have been built at a rate of up to 500 a year. We now have a thriving community in the Hamptons and on page 7, you can find out more about the most recent housing developments planned for our area. With the aim of helping to keep Hampton tidy, Hampton Parish Council will be funding a free bulky waste collection on Saturday 11 May. Read more about which items will be accepted on page 3. Do you have household DIY tasks mounting up? It might be time to consider hiring a handyman/woman, but before you start, read our feature on page 10 which gives you some helpful tips. As more of us turn to vegetarianism, we celebrate National Vegetarian Week on page 9, with some recipes to try, and information about the scientific research that demonstrates the health and environmental benefits of a plant-based diet. If you are thinking about getting away from it all for a short time, a city break is the perfect way to see some amazing sights,. But with concerns over the effects of Brexit and rising prices, you may just need to look a little further out of Europe for some of the fantastic city breaks that are available. Get packing and read more on page 13.

Rachel - CSK Hampton, pioneer@cskhampton.church I know from personal experience that many would prefer the church kept out of politics… but it is hard to ignore the wounds in the country at the moment. What have we got to offer our divided land? At the time of writing, it’s still unclear how things will be resolved in Parliament. Whatever the eventual outcome, however, we can be sure that a great many people will feel hurt and alienated. Our country and relationships are in need of healing after such a period of argument and division. It’s very tempting to point the finger and assign blame, but apart from feeling comforting, it doesn’t really get us anywhere. Social media makes it easy to despise or mock the ‘other’ angrily from afar; meanwhile, we forget that people are very much more than the sum of their thoughts on one particular issue. The Bible promises us that Jesus will ‘reconcile to himself all things, whether things on earth or things in heaven, by making peace
through his blood, shed on the cross’ (from a letter the apostle Paul wrote to the Colossians). Whatever you think about who Jesus was - a good moral leader, a teacher, Saviour - there is the inescapable fact that he laid down his life for his friends. But the Christian faith would encourage us to remember that it was also for his enemies. He loved and died for those who hated him. Jesus still commits that peacemaking work to us today, calling us to love those with whom we disagree - and even when it bears a personal cost. Reconciliation doesn’t need to be about resolving specific issues of disagreement; instead, it is about bringing people together and allowing each of us to encounter the humanity of our neighbour. What are the values that unite us? When we look deeper into this, we find things in common that we never thought possible. With my heartfelt love and prayers for peace.

New scheme offers essentials for young people An initiative has been launched in Yaxley that distributes free toiletries, sanitary items and underwear to young people.
Please contact sally.howell@yaxley.community if you wish to become a donation and/or collection point

Representatives from the Police, Cambridgeshire County Council, Huntingdonshire District Council, Yaxley Partnership, Yaxley Youth Club, Gemma’s Hearts, Yaxley Football Club and the Young People’s Counselling Service gathered at Yaxley Library in April to launch ‘Essentials by Sue’ with County Council Community Champion Adela Costello (Deputy Mayor Ramsey Town Council) and project founder Sue Loaker, who introduced the scheme. Toothbrushes, sanitary towels, hairbrushes, shower gel, deodorants and male and female underwear are just a selection of goods on offer to teenagers who may be unable to buy the items themselves or may not be receiving them at home. Children who do not have these essential items can be bullied and often exclude themselves from school and social activities. If you would like to donate essential items, the first donation points are located at Yaxley Library, Fourfields and Yaxley FC. Additional donation points will be added in the coming weeks. These items can be taken anonymously without any fuss and the first collection points will be at Yaxley Youth Club and Yaxley Library with more to follow, including one at the Annabelle Davis Centre.

cookwise More of us are turning to vegetarianism thanks to an abundance of scientific research that demonstrates both the health and environmental benefits of a plant-based diet. By Sarah Davey
National Vegetarian Week 13-19 May An estimated 70 percent of all diseases, including one-third of all cancers, are related to diet. A vegetarian diet reduces the risk for chronic degenerative diseases such as obesity, coronary artery disease, high blood pressure, diabetes and certain types of cancer including colon, breast, prostate, stomach, lung and oesophageal cancer. A vegetarian diet tends to increase bone strength. When there isn't enough calcium in the bloodstream, our bodies leach it from existing bone. This results in our skeletons gradually becoming porous and losing strength. Although you can take supplements, it's better to obtain calcium from your diet because food also supplies other nutrients such as phosphorus, magnesium and vitamin D, that are necessary for the body to be able to absorb and make use of calcium. Even if you have to avoid dairy, calcium-rich foods include beans, tofu, plant-based milks like soy, oat, rice or almond, and dark green vegetables such as broccoli, and kale. For those of us going through the menopause many vegetables and fruits are rich in phytoestrogens, the plant-based chemical compounds that mimic the behaviour of oestrogen. Maintaining a balance of these in your diet helps ensure a more comfortable passage through menopause. Soy is by far the most abundant natural source of phytoestrogens, but they are
also found in apples, beets, cherries, dates, garlic, olives, plums, raspberries, squash and sweet potatoes. Vegetarians tend to have more energy. Whole grains, legumes, fruits and vegetables are high in complex carbohydrates, so they supply the body with plenty of energizing fuel. Vegetarians also suffer less with constipation, haemorrhoids and diverticulitis! Eating a lot of vegetables necessarily means consuming more fibre, which absorbs water and bulks up, helping your stools stay soft, so waste can be easily pushed out of the body. A vegetarian diet is more environmentally friendly. Much of the grain we grow is fed to animals raised for slaughter. As a rough guide it takes 2,500 gallons of water, 5.5Kg / 12lbs of grain, nearly 16Kg /35lbs of topsoil and the energy equivalent of 4.5L /1 gallon of petrol, to produce one pound of beef! A vegetarian diet can sustain many more people, so is a more efficient use of resources. Finally, a vegetarian diet is cheaper. Eating vegetables, grains and fruits in place of beef, chicken and fish would cut individual food bills by an average of £500 per year. If you are thinking about becoming vegetarian, or even just incorporating more vegetarian meals into your normal diet, there is lots of information and some great recipes on the website www.nationalvegetarianweek.org

City Breaks A European city break is the perfect way to have a weekend seeing some amazing sights, yet concerns over the effects of Brexit and rising prices have put many people off booking for Europe this year. However, you may just need to look a little further at some of the fantastic city breaks that are available further out of Europe enquiries@kuyenda.co.uk www.kuyenda.co.uk 0800 90 98 980
There’s always so much to see and do in New York; it is, after all, the city that never sleeps. You can get tickets to the latest Broadway show or you could just head to Ellen’s Stardust Diner where the staff – mostly Broadway hopefuls – sing while they bring you food and drinks. Central Park is beautiful in every season and obviously the shopping here is fantastic. How about visiting the Moroccan city of Marrakech? Here you could find yourself haggling at a traditional souk in the old town of Medina. The main market square, Jemaa el-Fnaa, is vibrant and alive at all times of the day. Day trips to the fortified city and UNESCO World Heritage site of Aït Benhaddou are
also incredibly popular. When evening rolls around, restore yourself with the delightfully spice-infused cuisine, and belly-dance the night away. Alternatively, you could just stay in the UK and feel like you’ve been away, by flying or taking a ferry to Belfast. The Botanic Gardens in Queen's Quarter are perfect for a relaxing stroll and were an important part of the city’s Victorian heritage, as it was a popular meeting place for the aristocracy. Belfast is also home to Belfast Cathedral, The Albert Clock and the Titanic Visitor Experience. You could also go on a day trip to see the stunning Giant’s Causeway.

MONEY MATTERS
The new face of divorce If you sadly reach the conclusion that your marriage is irretrievably broken down, unlike what happens in many jurisdictions around the world, you can’t just make a mutual decision to start divorce proceedings.
Single or double trade? by Pete Bird, Bird & Co, Certified Public Accountants
With the mandation of MTD for registered businesses for VAT with a turnover exceeding the VAT threshold (£85,000) that came into force from 1 April 2019, care should be taken if you try to separate a business for VAT purposes. A recent case heard by the First Tier Tribunal (FTT) makes it important to get matters correct and professional help. A taxpayer’s main trade was as a plasterer but he also carried out liquid floor screeding. He was a sole trader until 2013 but then formed a partnership with his wife for the screeding. The aim was to separate the businesses so that only the partnership was VAT registered even though its turnover was under the threshold. This allowed it to claim the input tax on materials. However, the plastering business was not registered and this allowed the taxpayer to offer his customers lower rates than would be the case if he had to add VAT. HMRC said there had only ever been a single sole trader business
legally binding
legallybinding
and the combined turnover of both activities required a retrospective registration date of 1.3.13. The taxpayer appealed. The FTT was satisfied that there were two businesses. Further, the activities each had different customer bases in different locations. The taxpayer made some efforts to present them as separate businesses issuing invoices with separate headers However, this was not always carried out consistently. Sometimes invoices included both activities and only one employer’s liability insurance policy was held. But overall, the FTT decided it was the taxpayer’s intention for the businesses to be separate. The taxpayer’s appeal was allowed. (Darren Vaughan v HMRC).
If you have any tax or business questions, please email Pete Bird of Bird & Co info@birdandco.ltd and if of general interest, we will publish them here.
In this country you still have to apportion blame or wait for a minimum of two years from separation. Even then you need the consent of the other spouse without which you have to wait five years. No fault divorce was first introduced by the Family Law Act 1996 but was later considered unworkable and repealed. There has been a movement for reform ever since and demands for change mounted after the Tini Owens case last year. Mrs Owens had filed for divorce on the grounds of her husband’s unreasonable behaviour but she failed right up to the Supreme Court to provide sufficient evidence of that behaviour being unreasonable enough and the divorce was thrown out. She has had to wait for the expiry of the full five years. Mrs Owen’s situation was highly unusual and it is very rare for divorce proceedings to be contested. Nonetheless it is not a good start to ending the marriage when you have to raise allegations of unpalatable behaviour which often sets the tone for the rest of the case.
The new law is likely to require that just one of the spouses gives notice that the marriage has broken down and the separation period is reduced to nine months. The Government is committed to reforming divorce law in the next parliamentary session, which starts in May. Whether the recent turmoil over Brexit will derail this timetable is another matter. But the push for reform is now very strong. The other major divorce reform introduced recently is modernising the process, namely the ability to apply online for the issue of a divorce petition. These are already coming through the system but in the early stages. Currently you still need to satisfy the grounds for divorce or it will be rejected at decree nisi stage. You must also be careful that you fill in the sections about applying for costs and most importantly, applying for financial orders. If you have any queries or doubts about the process, contact a family law specialist.

Lakota (Lover of Nature)
Do you remember as a child holding a buttercup up to your neck, or a friend’s? Do people still do this or has this all but disappeared? If the yellow was reflected it meant that you liked butter. The petals are indeed highly reflective due to the mirror-flat nature of the cells in the petals; in most other plants the petals are corrugated. So buttercups do in fact reflect light more than other flowers: the purpose of this feature is to attract insects for pollination There are many species of buttercup in the UK but the most common is the Creeping Buttercup. And unsurprisingly there is a link between butter and the buttercup: the name appears to come from a belief that the yellow of the flower gave butter its yellowness, due to cows eating buttercups from the fields. However, buttercups are in fact poisonous to cattle and are often left uneaten. It’s rather strange then why one of the favourite names for cows is ‘Buttercup’! Buttercup flowers follow the sun to make the most of the warmth available. On cold days the petals make a cup shape in order to collect solar energy, which then warms up the flower. This makes them even more inviting to insects, and the focussing of sunlight into its centre warms up the parts of the flower that produce pollen. The buttercup appears in a legend concerning Ranunculus a young boy who
always dressed from head to toe in gold and green silk. He spent his days running round the trees of the forest singing in a beautiful, clear, high-pitched voice. And he never, ever stopped. The wood nymphs, realising this was disturbing the peace of the forest and all the creatures in it, turned him into a buttercup and sent him out into the open meadow to live; thereby restoring peace and harmony. According to another legend, fairies are responsible for buttercups. When a group of fairies saw an old miser crossing a field with a sack of gold, they stopped him to ask for alms. Not wanting to share his gold, the old miser refused and continued on his way. However, the clever fairies cut a hole in his sack with a blade of grass before he continued on his way. As the he crossed the field, his coins dropped from the bag and were scattered among the grass. Buttercups sprang forth wherever the coins touched the earth.
The buttercups, bright-eyed and bold, ‘Against her ankles as she trod, The lucky buttercups did nod.’ Held up their chalices of gold Jean Ingelow, (1829-1897)
To catch the sunshine and the dew. Julia C. Dorr (1825-1913)
Slimy Slippery Molluscs As May begins we hope the frost and cold are finally over and our plants can start to grow and bloom though May frosts are not unheard of and can severely damage fruit and potato crops. In recent years May has generally been warm though like our winters quite often wetter than the norm and it is now that slugs and snails can become the bane of all plant growers. It is so easy to reach for slug pellets and similar to defend our plants but doing so is as much a blow to our friends the hedgehog, the toad, the thrush and the beetles to name but a few who are also laid low and unproductive by these pernicious chemicals. The chemicals in most slug pellets are found in high concentration in most of the mollusc predators and even in domestic cats and dogs, whilst the water companies spend thousands removing them from our drinking water. Recent estimates suggest that almost two thirds of the plant damage from slugs and snails in the UK is perpetrated by non-native species
that have naturalised in the country through importation of plants and soil. Also the majority of these maligned creatures predominantly feast on dead and decaying plant matter rather than healthy growth. And of course there is the fastest moving slug the predatory leopard slug that dines on other slugs moving at an incredible four inches per minute to hunt down its slower moving cousins. Far better to look to companion planting, predator encouragement, abrasive surfaces and copper tape to protect key plants encouraging nature to symbiotically balance in our gardens
once more. Companion planting can either take the form of planting something that repels slugs and snails or something they love as a sacrifice to protect your key plants. Predators can be encouraged by creating beetle banks, hibernaculum for amphibians, creating a pond and via hedgehog homes. A number of nonchemical slug an snail prevention techniques have recently been trialled by the RHS to see which are effective and which are just myth. But all of these will lead to a healthier balanced plot than continued use of slug pellets to which there are signs that some slugs are developing immunity.

Hereward Harmony is a male chorus that sing 4-part close harmony in a style called Barbershop. We formed over 30 years ago and meet once a week for an evening of singing. Our main aim is to reach a good standard of singing, but with the emphasis definitely on enjoying the experience. We also perform in a variety of local venues and often raise funds for charity. Last year we ran a hugely successful ‘Learn to Sing’ course that lasted for 6 weeks. Some 25 people attended, out of whom 15 decided to join our happy band, swelling our membership to 35. During the last year we have been joined by another couple of new members, so we seem to be doing something right! We rehearse on Thursday evenings from 7.30 until 10pm at the Orton Wistow Community Centre in Napier Place – PE2 6XN. The evening starts with some simple limbering up the body and vocal chords. We then work on a selection of our repertoire under the direction of our superb young musical director. Half way through the evening we break for refreshments, biscuits and a raffle, before working on more songs. We extend a warm welcome to anyone who would like to come and see what we do; we can promise you a friendly reception and a good insight into Barbershop singing. We won’t try and make you sing if you don’t want to and we only start charging a very modest £12 a month after your first 3 months with us.
Lesley Smith is Curator of Tutbury Castle in Staffordshire, where Mary Queen of Scots was held prisoner on four occasions. She has appeared in over 120 TV programmes and is well known for her entertaining and compelling costumed monologues.
People are invited to bring along any jewellery and antiques which have been unworn or unloved for years, which they would like to transform into treasure for the Cathedral and, if they wish, a parish church of their choice in the Peterborough Diocese. Hansons will sell the items via one of their Specialist Auctions, with the Cathedral and the chosen churches each receiving half of the total proceeds. You can also come along and meet Charles for valuation advice on other items, and make a donation for this service. Lesley Smith, in character as Elizabeth I, will be present to chat to visitors of all ages and be available for photos.

I have been selected alongside 6 other girls throughout the Anglian region to complete a service project in Mexico I am hoping not just to experience a new culture to share with my community upon my return, but also to change their local communities’ lives for the better. I have come so far to get the opportunity I have been given, by completing two stages to be accepted onto this trip. The second stage had up to a possibility of 50 girls wanting the same trip I got selected for. To be able to make this happen I need as much support as possible from my community as I need to raise £2,340. My service project will include either
helping paint a school or running a summer school, both for the local children. During my time in Mexico I will get to stay in one of the five Girlguiding world centres. I specifically chose a service project as I wanted to be able to help make a difference to a local community and to show the other Hampton guides the possibilities available within Girlguiding. I will look forward to sharing my adventures and cultural experiences with my local guiding unit and the community.
As part of my fundraising, I am organising an afternoon tea on Saturday 11 May from 4-6pm at a cost of £5 per person. There will also be a book stall and raffle on the day. I am hoping for a lot of support with this. I would be very grateful for support given by the community by attending the afternoon tea. If you would like to buy a ticket for the afternoon tea please contact my Mum (Sharon Milner) on 07743782088 or Hampton Vale One Stop. Thank you for the support, Caris Milner.
The Ark The Ark took a short break over the Easter period but not without celebrating Palm Sunday to finish the Spring Term. As you can see, these colourful Praise Wavers were made by some very enthusiastic children, parents and grandparents. These sparkly wavers also featured at the Easter Crafts afternoon held at CSK Church on Palm Sunday. This event was for all ages and it was great to see some of our ‘Ark families’ enjoying the crafts, story and songs together. We are now looking forward to welcoming everyone back to The Ark for
the Summer Term on Thursday 2 May 10am - 11.15am. Our theme this term will be ‘Jobs’ and we look forward to exploring this theme through crafts, sensory activities, stories and songs. There will also be our usual range of toys to enjoy. We are also looking forward to welcoming back Jo from Spurgeons Children’s Charity who will be bringing along some Story Sacks. Why not come and join us? FACEBOOK/TheArkHampton
Hampton Mini Movers We hope everyone has enjoyed the Easter break and been able to recharge and spend some time with family and friends.
Determination, kindness and curiosity
Folksworth Pre-school Our ethos encourages the children to show kindness, to be determined and to have curiosity What better way to teach our children their place within our community than going out into our local environment? Over the last month we have been on many walks to create our own map of Folksworth. We would take a rubbish bag along with us to help teach the importance of caring for our environment. To learn taking responsibility for our actions, we talked about
the importance of closing the field gates behind us. These skills may seem simple but are the first steps in learning a sense of community, by actively being a part of it. We have also learned how to be polite and respectful to all those that we met on the way. The children have loved the different journeys we have undertaken and are very keen for our next adventure.
May is a short half term before the second bank holiday so there are only 2 Mini Movers sessions in May but we are certainly hoping for some May sunshine to be able to enjoy some outdoor playtime. If you haven’t been to us before, we are always keen to welcome new people to our sessions so please come along, and if you haven’t been for a while, why not come again with your child. We are a drop in, stay and play session, and we welcome Mums, Dad’s, Grandparents or carers with a child from Newborn to Reception age. Our sessions are just £1 per family, 1.15pm till 2.45pm Monday (term time only) at the Hampton Vale Community Centre, including a snack and drink for the children, and tea, coffee and biscuits for the adults. The sessions are run by volunteers from KingsGate Community Church. FACEBOOKHampton Mini Movers

Hampton Hargate It continues to be busy year in the life of Hampton Hargate. We enjoyed a wonderful Easter break and are raring to go for the first half of the summer term. The run up to Easter was jam packed with events and fundraising. Year 1 had a great time creating Robots as part of their topic work. They were all displayed for everyone to admire and enjoy the fabulous creations. We were lucky to have a visit from The Peterborough Revellers (including a former pupil) recently who performed a snapshot of their forthcoming production of Wind in the Willows. Their show starts at the Key Theatre on 2nd May. Our Fairtrade fortnight was a success and the children enjoyed buying and selling Fairtrade chocolate. We also took part in the Big Pedal fortnight at the end of March and are looking forward to hearing how many journeys we made to school on bikes or scooters. Years 3&4 had a fabulous Roman Day and really enjoyed spending
the day dressed as Romans and taking part in Chariot racing and making Roman sandals! And finally in fundraising news. Congratulations to Lucas in Year 4 who organised a non uniform day to raise money for Peterborough City Hospital. Lots of children came dressed as their favourite emergency service and we were awash with Doctors, Nurses, Fire Service and Police personnel. Lucas raised a whopping £782! In other fundraising news, our non uniform for Red Nose Day raised £597 and a well done to Chloe from Year 3 who created a Red Nose Day competition where the children could pay 10p to submit their Red Nose design. Chloe raised £16.50. We have a busy summer term ahead with SATS week, sports days, Year 6 residential and lots more to tell you about in the next issue.

Chloe's Little Book Shop
Chloe's Little Book Shop was established in 2016 as a hobby so that Chloe (then 6 months) could enjoy everything books and reading have to offer Now three years on, Chloe & Mummy (Mel) are working in and around Peterborough to inspire children to discover a lifelong love of reading. With regular stalls at Peterborough City and Hinchingbrooke Hospitals and various schools and nurseries across the city, Chloe makes books affordable for everyone. Working with Scholastic Book Parties, she can offer heavily discounted books by many favourite authors, and much of the profit is donated back. Last year alone, Chloe donated hundreds of books to the children's
ward and schools - including Hampton Vale Primary School. With a new monthly Book Fair at Hampton Vale Community Centre, Chloe is making her books available to the whole of the Hamptons. All books are just ÂŁ2.50 each (with the odd exception) - that's less than the price of a cup of coffee or a magazine! And she offers a loyalty card so you can collect stamps and claim a free book! Mummy is in charge of the day-today running of the business and Chloe keeps everyone up to date with her news on her Facebook page 'Chloe's Little Book Shop'.
If you want to find out how your school or nursery can get involved, get in touch through the Facebook page. or email chloeslittlebookshop@gmail.com a or call 07886 615647

Hampton College This half term has seen an extremely well received three day run of the school production of Annie. The production was led and produced by some of our Sixth Form students and the standard of the production was exceptional, with amazing performances from all of the cast. We have also seen success in the Peterborough Festival for our Music and English students, along with numerous team and individual sporting success, including winning the Peterborough Football Cup. A reminder that as we approach the exam season, we would request parents' support
please with ensuring their son or daughter arrives to school dressed properly according to our uniform expectations and with proper school equipment. The results from our recent parent survey, which are completed during parents' evenings, has seen many positive ratings and comments, which we have been delighted to receive. The measures, which align with Ofsted’s ‘Parentview’ survey, consistently score a satisfaction rating of above 95%.
Have you thought about joining the Scouts? Life as a Scout is an eye-opening adventure that actively engages and supports young people aged 10 ½ - 14 years in their personal development, empowering them to make a positive contribution to society and scouting is open to everyone.
Skills for life
Scouts learn skills that are essential to building their character, helping others and developing an awareness of the world around them. Scouting also helps young people to learn to work effectively as part of a team, alongside developing leadership, problem-solving and communication skills , and a sense of responsibility. Scouts get involved with community impact projects, creative activities, backwoods cooking, camping, hiking, sports, water activities and much more. Hampton Scout Troop meets every Tuesday during term-time, from 7.30 - 9pm and is based at Hampton Gardens School.

How to come out on top
Year 11 and 13 (and the teachers!) know all too well that the public examinations are just around the corner. So much has gone into helping students prepare for their exams including after school and holiday revision sessions, many of which are taking place over the Easter holidays. It goes without saying how crucial it is that students are using this time wisely. We are always here to help and look forward to seeing many happy faces on the respective GCSE and A Level results days in August. By Louise Addison
Exam Stress
It used to be thought that being a child meant living through the happiest days of your life. How times change. Now, with league tables, SATS, and GCSEs, many children are falling victim to stress. So, if you (or your children, if you’re a parent reading this) are feeling pressured, with no-where to turn, we have some great tips to help you get through exam season relatively unscathed. Stress is caused by the way our body responds to outside events, not necessarily by the events themselves. Some stress is good: adaptive stress releases adrenaline and helps us to rise to a challenge. It’s a temporary state and the body returns to normal very quickly. Problem stress occurs when the body stays in a heightened state for a prolonged period of time. It’s this type of stress which is causing problems for today’s children. Unlike when we were young and exams were end-of-term or even end-of year events, today’s child has seemingly relentless pressure to perform all year round with the result that they get very little down-time in which their body can recover from all that adrenaline. Not everyone suffers in the same way from stress. Some children seem to cope with it well. Research has shown that these children are generally more positive, have a good sense of humour and have parents who themselves deal well with potentially stressful situations. Finally, it’s useful to understand that while exams are important, they are not worth making yourself ill over. You can always sit them again. www.studentminds.org.uk/examstress.html (www.nhs.uk/conditions/stress-anxiety-depression/ coping-with-exam-stress/)
Exam Busting Tips! Get plenty of rest - sleep is important Take regular breaks - you’ll stay fresher Leave time for some fun - when you’ve reached your revision goal reward yourself with an activity you enjoy Be realistic - Don’t overdo it Eat properly - avoid caffeinated drinks like coffee or coke. Exercise - It’s a great stress buster and improves your mood Be nice to yourself - Don’t beat yourself up about the things you haven’t done, be positive about all you’ve achieved Relax - When it all gets too much just chill for a while. You’ll feel much better.

garden view
gardenview Scaling the wall ... clematis What do you think of if I say ‘clematis’? I think most of us would think of the large, purple-flowered, “Jackmanii” or the rampant, bronze-leafed, pink-flowered montana rubens. They are both terrific plants, but I think they are a little over-used. My husband teases me that I tend to give my ‘clematis lecture’ when visiting friends’ houses and see one scrambling over a trellis. For your benefit I’ve written it down here. Clematis is known as the ‘Queen of Climbers’. It can be utterly spectacular and should definitely not be relegated to trellis. It can used for covering fences and arbours, old tree stumps, sheds and even in beds and borders. Choose wisely and you can have flowers from early spring until late autumn. For beds and borders you don’t want anything as vigorous as montana, which will smother everything it touches. Instead choose a daintier one such as a variety of texensis or viticella. The flowers of the texensis hybrids look like finely cut bells. “Etoile Rose” is a beautiful dark pink edged with paler pink and “Princess of Wales” is a beautiful rosy red. Both of these will scramble through shrubs and flower all summer. They die back in winter so can be tidied up then. Viticella hybrids produce flowers which look like little pixie hats as they open. “Minuet” has purple and white flowers suspended on fine stems while “Purpurea Plena Elegans” produces double blooms which open into little purple rosettes.
26
One of the most difficult sites to find climbers for is an east or north facing site. My absolute favourite clematis thrives in this situation and flowers in early spring. Clematis alpina “Pink Flamingo” produces nodding, semi-double, creamy flowers veined with deep pink. It has the added bonus of producing beautiful fluffy seed heads after the flowers fade. Clematis prefers its feet in the shade and its head in the sun. Make sure the plant’s roots are shaded: pieces of broken flagstone are ideal, or an old cracked upside-down terracotta pot with the bottom knocked out. When clematis is happy it will flower prolifically. Large-flowered clematis tend to produce a second flush in the autumn, but others like tangutica and orientalis wait to flower until then. Both of these are very vigorous and are great for covering unsightly sheds or old trees. Finally, if you have a sheltered spot against a wall try cirrhosa balearica. This is a beautiful, winter-flowering variety with ferny foliage and pale-green flowers spotted with crimson. So, there it is…my clematis lecture. Hopefully you took notes and are ready to branch out into a whole new world of climbers.
Happy gardening, Rachael Leverton

CBD oil: What is it, what are the benefits ?
fitforlife
CBD OIL has risen in popularity in the last year with its increased availability across the UK. But what is it, what are the benefits and how do you find a high quality product? What is CBD oil? Cannabidiol (CBD) is one of the 80 plus active cannabinoids naturally found in the hemp plant. The oil is extracted from the plant and mixed with other plant oils. Ideally, your CBD oil would be full spectrum which means that it contains trace amounts of other minor cannabinoids - this has been shown to have a more beneficial effect. What are the benefits of CBD? Although CBD is a food supplement, not a medicine, some studies claim that it can have the following properties: Analgesic, antioxidant, anti-bacterial, sedative, antidepressent, antipsychotic, anxiolytic and anti-convulsive.
How can you take CBD? There's a fast-growing CBD product range but the most simple way to get your CBD is to take a take a few drops of oil under your tongue.
Is CBD legal? CBD is completely legal but make sure you buy a brand where lab reports are visible and they are members of the Cannabis Trades Association UK. Hapi Hemp adhere to both.
The official UK guidelines is that no more than 0.2% of THC can be contained per bottle and most reputable brands will comply with this.
How do I know its safe? Make sure you buy from a reputable retailer, ask for lab reports, check and see if they are members of the CTA and find out where the product is originally from. So much comes in from China where they have no certifications and products are tested on animals. All Hapi hemp products are certified and we can provide lab reports, we are also members of the CTA. Hapi Hemp was born in 2018 from a vision and personal experiences from two women and is built around quality, passion, experience, trust & safety. Hapi Hemp is registered with the Cannabis Trade Association (CTA). The CTA are the only centric trade association for the UK that works with all sectors of the hemp and cannabis industry to promote good practice, provide practical advice and ensure consumers have access to top quality information regarding legal hemp products. The CTA works to ensure that common sense prevails and sellers provide products that are legitimate -
Fit at fifty ... and beyond
"sellers say what they are and are what they say" therefore giving you peace of mind when buying from us and most importantly adhering to rules regarding legal labelling and lab reports. Hemp is fast becoming a popular therapeutic product and with this comes many dubious sellers. When purchasing products such as these it is vital that you know you are buying an ethical item. So many countries overseas still test on animals, something that goes against the whole Hapi Hemp ethos, so please be careful when deciding on what items to choose. If its cheap – ask yourself why? Not all CBD products are equal… Hapi Hemp is all about providing high quality hemp products that have been produced by companies that we know and trust. Everything that we sell has been thoroughly tested by us! Our promise to you is we would NEVER sell you anything that we haven’t tested or that we do not believe in. We hope to gain trust and recognition from our customers through reliability, quality and service. www.hapihemp.co.uk FACEBOOK Hapi Hemp CBD Users UK & follow us on IG. info@hapihemp.co.uk

Attention over-fifties! When was the last time you visited a gym? You kind of know you should be making an effort, right? Or maybe like me you have a pathological fear of lycra? I wanted to achieve a healthier lifestyle with improved cardiovascular fitness Motivation This is the key. You need a specific goal. I wanted to achieve a healthier lifestyle with improved cardiovascular fitness. Time Look in your diary and you will find a spare hour at least once, or better still, two or three times a week. Cost Can be as expensive or affordable as you want. A ladies-only gym with a personal trainer can be expensive, but a mixed gym membership in off-peak hours brings the cost down considerably and you can still get instruction and advice from an on-site trainer. Most gyms now take membership fees on a monthly direct debit basis. Remember, it’s not a fashion parade and chafed tender bits will put you off exercise forever! I want a healthier and fitter me; I have the time to do this”. Don’t be put off by glum folk who say it’s all a waste of time. Mix with positive people who will encourage you and improve your self-esteem. Metabolism slows down as you get older and this can lead to weight gain, but exercise helps keep weight on an even keel because you build lean
muscle. You also improve your immune system and cardiovascular system; reduce bad cholesterol and boost brainpower. Research shows that only 32% of men and 21% of women aged over 50 in England undertake some form of regular exercise. In the over-65’s this drops to 17% of men and 12% of women, and in Scotland the figures are even less! The trainers at your gym will discuss the best way to get you back into shape. If you haven’t exercised before or for a long while they will advise that you start slowly and build up gradually. Good instructors are enthusiastic and well-trained and will arrange a set of exercises to suit to you. Before you know it, you’ll have a routine e.g. 5 minutes bike, 5 minutes treadmill, 5 minutes weights. It will only take a few sessions before you improve and begin to compete with yourself. You’ll notice the benefits of improved posture; improved breathing, zest and vitality almost immediately. We are all living longer but perhaps we should also be aiming to live more healthily too.

Cybercrime don’t fall foul of the online fraudsters Over 13,000 people in the UK reported cyber-crimes over the six months, with more than 5,000 of those having had their social media or email accounts hacked – costing victims £14.8 million. An initiative to crackdown on scammers across Cambridgeshire and Peterborough, and aim to make the county scam-free, is gaining momentum. Safe Local Trades is delighted to be supporting the Cambridgeshire and Peterborough Against Scams Partnership (CAPASP), which includes Cambridgeshire Constabulary, Police and Crime Commissioner Jason Ablewhite, Cambridgeshire County Council and Peterborough City Council. CAPASP is committed to working towards stamping out scams; In the case of cybercrime, fraudsters trick internet and email users into giving personal details, including financial information, in order to steal their money.
If you think you or a loved one may have been the victim of a scam, report it to Action Fraud at www.actionfraud.police.uk/ To find out how you can sign up for the fight against fraud, and read some tips on spotting a scam, visit www.safelocaltrades.com/consumers/advice/friends-against-scams
Some kinds of online scams to be aware of: Phishing: where you receive an email that pretends to be from an authority (e.g., your bank) in which you’re asked to give out your passwords or personal information such as your address, telephone number, or other data. Pharming - the fraudulent practice of directing online users to a fake website, which mimics the appearance of a real / legitimate one Romance Scams - a confidence scam whereby a criminal displays fake romantic intentions towards a victim in order to gain their affection to then extort money Impersonation of UK officials - criminals impersonate a UK official to obtain personal information by claiming that the victim is due a refund or must make an urgent payment File Hijacking: where a hacker enters your computer and accesses your files, locking you out of them. This can help them get information about you, get passwords, or even blackmail you. Keylogging: where hackers can record your keystrokes on your computer, thus gaining your passwords or other personal info. Ad Clicking: where hackers encourage you to click on a link (perhaps by email, or on a webpage) which will then open malware or simply ask for your personal info.
