The days are getting shorter and the nights are getting longer as autumn really settles in nearest Sunday to All Saints Day. This service is for those who have been bereaved, whether recently or a long time ago. We read out the names of loved ones we want to remember before God and each other, each candle lit is a visual reminder of the love we shared. We celebrate All Hallow Eve, the eve of All Saints Day the 31st October with a Free Food and Film Night starting at 5pm with food, followed by a recently released film which we will advertise on CSK and Gazette Facebook pages during October. This event is for everyone: adults you are welcome to attend without children. Children very welcome, but you do need to bring an adult with you. Chimes our church coffee shop will also be open where the usual array of yummy cakes can be purchased. Come and join us for a fun evening.

One of Jesus’ well-known sayings is that he is the 'Light of the World', and he followed it up by saying, ‘Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but have the light of life.’ That’s a powerful reminder that whatever we’re facing, we don’t have to do it alone, but can be filled with his light. When you turn on a light switch in your house, darkness can’t remain in the room. Light triumphs over darkness. Even a little candle takes away the darkness around it and its warmth and glow heats a whole room. It’s the same with human beings: one person shining can change a whole home, workplace or even neighbourhood. We light candles in memory of loved ones during our ‘Time to Remember, Time to Give Thanks’ service which will take place on Sunday 3rd November at 3pm, the

Hampton Waters Residents enjoy a block party barbecue A barbecue was organised by local residents, with food, drink and a bouncy castle sponsored by Barratt Homes. Face painting was provided free, from one of the residents from Happy Kids Face Paint and everyone helped to make this a success day. Various activities such as football and volleyball also took place. This was an opportunity for everyone to meet their neighbours and Ed from Wakepark who took time out at the end of his day to meet everyone. In the evening they had a firepit and toasted marshmallows. It was lovely to see a community coming together and Barrett homes supporting this event for the second time.

Rainbow Bridge's New Playmate J-Lo, the little dog with the big heart who has been her daddy’s constant joy since the day she came home to him, has passed away For many years, J-Lo suffered health conditions for which she had medication and surgery, but she kept smiling; that little tail kept wagging, right up until the end. On 27 August 2019 at 10.15 am, this pretty little girl finally told her owner, Patrick, that she had had enough and was ready to go. She was ten years and six days old. Patrick will always grieve for her, as will anyone who knew her, and he would like to thank the Reverend Sylvia Kinder for being there with him and J-Lo at the end. She blessed this precious little dog

and helped her on her journey. Patrick would also like to thank the people, all over the world, who have sent sympathy cards and condolences. No more will J-Lo be seen on her journeys about Hampton, no more will she be at the Chimes café or in church, no more seen beside the lake, but she is there in spirit and if you listen carefully, you might hear her special little noise when she visits.

Safe journey, sweetheart. Margaret Brazear

HMOs can vary from a bed-sit where each letting usually has its own kitchen but a shared bathroom, to room-let type lettings where tenants rent a room but kitchen and bathroom facilities are shared. These types of properties have increased the number of parking issues substantially within the area, and so for the past 12 months the parish and ward councillors have been requesting that the city council adopt what is known as an Article 4 direction. Article 4 directions are a means by which Peterborough City Council can legally bring within their planning control certain types of development, or changes of use, which would not normally require an application for planning permission. The effect of an Article 4 direction in Hampton would mean that a planning application is required to be made for the change of use of a building from a dwelling house to a small HMO. The Article 4 direction process is currently in the research stages, with an estimated completion date

in the spring of next year. The Article 4 direction would enable the parish councillors to discuss any application for an HMO within the area with input from the Hampton PES Officer who can inform the councillors of any current or potential traffic or parking issues within the HMO’s vicinity to allow the councillors to either approve or object to the application. However, there may be properties within Hampton that are not registered or listed as HMOs. Properties that aren’t registered may be unsafe and cause additional traffic

issues and the landlords of these HMOs may not have the appropriate fire exits and smoke detectors or carry out repairs that are at the legal required standard. The parish council is committed to reducing the impact of both registered and unregistered HMOs and has published a full list of all registered properties within Hampton on the Parish website and is requesting that if any residents have any concerns regarding a property that they contact the clerk at parishoffice@hamptonpc.co.uk

The full list of registered HMOs can be found on the Parish website www.hamptonpc.org.uk

From pooches to puppies, Dobermans and Great Danes to Labradoodles and Corgis, Britain is a bona fide nation of animal lovers, and K9s are one of our favourites of all pets

TRAINING DOGS

It's just a shame so many people have such difficulty keeping their furry friends under control. Shocking stories about dogs gone wild aside, it's safe to say that the vast number of owners do struggle to keep their best friend in check at all times. This is unsurprising, because irrespective of how housebroken they are, we're still talking about a species of animal here, with wildly different behavioural and social tendencies than we two-legged creatures have instilled into ourselves. As such, if they want to run off and chase that bird, then chances are they will try to do just that. It's in their nature. Nevertheless, a poorly trained dog is no good, and can easily become something of

an embarrassment. Whether that's going to the toilet in inappropriate places or running riot in the pub, there's no denying we've all seen it happen, and as any expert will tell you, the solution isn't particularly easy. Successfully passing on obedience and good behaviour takes time and commitment, but don't be put off - follow these simple rules and you won't go too far wrong...

Walks must involve discipline

Understand your breed

Assign your dog a task before it gets a treat

Show them what it means to be a good leader

Partly thanks to man's penchant for and understanding of a dog's ability to work, each breed has a host of different personality traits and attributes. It's vital that you understand these in order to successfully train and balance your pet.

It's no good rewarding the animal for doing nothing if you want to perfect training. By giving it something to do before offering a tasty snack, drink or toy, man's best friend begins to understand that enjoyable things don't come for free.

Dogs are highly perceptive and have a pack mentality. Set an example for how you want the animal to behave, in order for them to learn and replicate that.

Qualified and experienced dog groomer Collection & delivery service Haddon based

Mucky Hounds

Particularly important with puppies. In order to ensure your hound doesn't wind up wrecking the house when nobody is watching, start the day with a disciplined walk, enough to let them work off some energy without returning over-excited. It's also a good idea to walk out of the house ahead of your dog when setting off, so as to show it who's boss.

Allow time for mental exercises, every day Here's where you can make a dog appreciate rules, boundaries and restrictions. Simply giving them a physical run-about isn't enough their minds need to be stimulated in order to take on board the instructions you're giving them.

legallybinding More Cohabiting than Marrying! Over the last decade, statistics show that there has been an increase of 25.8% in the number of cohabiting couple families within the UK, which is a much faster growth than the number of married couples The number of same-sex couple families has grown by more than 50% since 2015 as well, many of whom will also be unmarried. This is not a new theme but one that bears repeating as there still seems to be so much ignorance out there about the status of cohabitation. Basically, there is no status in the family law context. Yes, there are laws relating to financial orders for children, but they are available to married couples as well. For the cohabiting couple, if you are unmarried or not in a civil partnership, on the breakdown of your relationship you will have no right to share in any capital money

unless held in a joint account, or any pension assets, or to receive any maintenance. In respect of property, unless you are a joint owner of your home or any other property or business, it could be very difficult to establish a beneficial right to any equity in such assets. It should also be remembered that, once you are married, the starting point for sharing is 50%, whether or not there is a trust deed which specifies holding the property in unequal shares. So if you are not going to marry, do consider a cohabitation agreement that can go some way to filling the gaps in your rights for financial provision if your relationship ends.

Money Matters by Pete Bird, Bird & Co, Certified Public Accountants

VAT Reverse Charge for Building Services New Guidance This brief explains that the introduction of the domestic reverse charge for construction services will be delayed for a period of 12 months until 1 October 2020 Background A domestic reverse charge means the UK customer who gets supplies of construction services must account for the VAT due on these supplies on their VAT return rather than the UK supplier. This removes the scope for fraudsters to steal the VAT due to HMRC and follows similar measures introduced in response to criminal threats for mobile telephones, computer chips, emissions allowances, gas and electricity, telecommunication services and renewable energy certificates. There has been a long lead-in time ahead of the anti-fraud measure coming into force. The Government first confirmed it would be taking this measure forward at Autumn Budget 2017. A technical consultation on the draft legislation and its impact took place in summer 2018 and the final legislation and guidance were published in November 2018. The long lead-in time was to allow for potential cash-flow and administrative impacts the change could have on businesses.

Businesses need to adapt their accounting systems for dealing with VAT and there will be a negative impact on the cash-flows for many affected businesses, as they will no longer get VAT payments from customers for services where the reverse charge applies.

Explanation of the Change Industry representatives have raised concerns that some businesses in the construction sector are not ready to implement the VAT domestic reverse charge for building and construction on 1 October 2019. To help these businesses and give them more time to prepare, the introduction of the reverse charge has been delayed for a period of 12 months until 1 October 2020. This will also avoid the changes coinciding with Brexit. From surveys made, it seems a large number of VAT and CIS registered businesses that fall under this new Domestic Reverse Charge, do not fully understand this new scheme. If we can help in this matter or any other, please do not hesitate to contact us.

w Use a serrated blade to cut a lid. Make sure the hole is big enough so that you can scoop out the flesh inside. e Use a large spoon or ice cream scoop to remove the pulp and seeds. Thin the walls a little too by scraping away some of the flesh. This makes carving easier and allows more light through. t A sharp, serrated knife will work best to cut out your design. Start at the centre and work outwards using short saw-like strokes for better control.

r It's best to draw your design in marker first. For a professional finish use a paper template. You can draw your own or download one; tape it to the pumpkin then use a sharp pointed tool, like a knitting needle or nail, to poke holes around the design. When you remove the paper, the design will be left on the pumpkin. y Rub some petroleum jelly on to the exposed parts of the pumpkin. This stops those areas from turning brown. u If you're using a real candle, put it in a small glass. Cut holes in the lid to allow heat and smoke to escape. Fairy lights and battery-operated candles are the safest and best options for lighting.

Festival of Remembrance In November, Peterborough Male Voice Choir, Peterborough Voices and Peterborough Youth Choir will commemorate the region’s fallen soldiers and the service and sacrifice of the armed forces with Festival of Remembrance, a moving evening of beautiful melodies and poignant words for Remembrance Sunday, taking place at The Cresset in support of the Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal The third event of its kind this promises to be a memorable evening, particularly so in this 75th anniversary year of the D-Day landings and the Battle of Normandy, one of the most remarkable allied wartime operations, when men from all over the world came to fight in Normandy to defeat Nazism and re-establish freedom. While paying tribute to the soldiers who fought to defend Britain’s freedoms, values and way of life – many of them losing their lives in the process – the anniversary represents a

momentous occasion celebrate peace, liberty, reconciliation and to hope for a peaceful future. William Prideaux, the choirs’ director says “Peterborough Male Voice Choir has a long history in the city, going back to not long after first world war when so many local men made the ultimate sacrifice. Given our roots in the local community it seems fitting to mark the occasion with what promises to be a nostalgic evening of wonderful melodies and touching moments, while raising money for a really good cause, the Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal.”

Home and Humanity New exhibitions and events following the lives of refugees

Vivacity announce ‘Home and Humanity,’ a new Autumn season of art exhibitions and events in the city. While exhibitions at Peterborough Museum and Art Gallery have always been designed to relate to contemporary affairs, this exhibition in particular touches on one of the most prevalent topics in today’s society - the refugee crisis. In 2017 over 68 million men, women and children worldwide were driven from their homes due to war, violence and persecution . ‘Home and Humanity’ follows these people and their families, many of whom have been divided during their journey across different countries in search of asylum. The exhibitions will go on display in Peterborough Museum and Art Gallery and Queensgate Shopping Centre. The three exhibitions are each slightly different in content but are united by the common theme of finding sanctuary:

‘Journeys Drawn: Illustrations from Refugee Crisis’ (11 Oct - 8 Dec) is a touring exhibition by House of Illustration highlighting different styles of illustration by different artists. This has been created by a mixture of refugee artists and artists who have worked in refugee camps. ‘Drawing Time’ (11 Oct - 8 Dec) is a visual story of one family’s journey from war-torn Darfur in Western Sudan, presented on hand-painted cloth. Having always drawn and sketched together for fun and for pleasure, for the Dirar family, art became a way to deal with memories of war and an uncertain future. Before long, the Dirars’ tent had become a visual gallery of coping with a ‘life in limbo’ and now exists as a document of their journey. ‘Home’ (27-29 Aug, 5-6 Oct) is a social engagement project, led by Syrian artist Issam Kourbaj, which is based around bringing

together people to create an answer to a common need - shelter. As part of the project, members of different communities from around Peterborough will build a shelter using recycled resources - in a similar way and to the same scale as those seen in refugee camps - but with a twist. Each wall of the structure, both inside and out, will be ornately decorated by participants, who will put their own mark on the shelter. The building will be embellished with colours, patterns and emblems that remind them of home. This humble abode will act as a symbol of hope. Sheena Carman, Vivacity’s Community Engagement and Arts Development Manager says “The refugee crisis is something that we hear about a lot in the media, but we often feel disconnected from it as it isn’t happening on our doorsteps. The exhibitions ‘Journeys Drawn’ and ‘Drawing Time’ humanise the stories

behind the statistics. They allow viewers to step into the shoes of a refugee for just a moment and think about how it feels to flee their war-torn homes and seek sanctuary in a forgein country. The project ‘Home’ is inspired by art projects taking place in refugee camps where UNHCR tents have been transformed into stunning works of art, showing that, out of some of the darkest times and experiences that humans often go through, it is still possible for something beautiful to emerge.” The ‘Home’ shelter will be on display at Queensgate shopping centre on the weekend of 5 - 6 October. The exhibitions ‘Journeys Drawn: Illustrations from the Refugee Crisis’ and ‘Drawing Time’ will be shown in Peterborough Museum and Art Gallery from 11 October - 8 December.

NEW WAVE OF SCAMS When it comes to scams, we may think they have reached their pinnacle of sophistication and down right cheek – until the next one comes along! Many of us are now quite familiar with telephone fraudsters claiming to fix our non-existent computer problems or offering help after the accident we didn’t actually have. This has been the summer of scams, in the form of postal, telephone and on-line fraud attempts – targeting everyone from holidaymakers to online daters. One of the latest and perhaps not so well-known scams is again targeting consumers, this time via automated phone calls pretending to be from their bank or credit card company. Banking and finance trade association UK Finance has said it has received dozens of reports of these scams, and is urging consumers to stay alert. Victims have received an automated phone call claiming to be from their bank or card provider, saying there has been a suspicious transaction on their account. They were then asked to verify the transaction by pressing a number on their phone to take them through to an "agent" – who is actually a fraudster. UK Finance is reminding consumers of five warning signs to look out for during a phone call, which suggest that the caller could be a scammer:

It is always worth remembering that your bank, card provider or the police will NEVER contact you asking for personal information or requesting you to transfer money to another account. If you feel uncomfortable or suspicious during a call, hang up and call your bank or card provider directly on its official phone number. And it doesn’t end there… Tax tricksters claiming to be from HMRC are also making misery for those running their own business through phishing scams. This is where an email purporting to be from HM Revenue & Customs can cause the recipient to become unnerved by content requesting money allegedly owed to the ‘tax man’. Scam emails of this sort not only look official but can often look like they’ve been sent from official government email addresses, making them harder to spot. Scammers sometimes even sign off phishing emails with the name or signature of a genuine HMRC employee for added authenticity. According to the National Trading Standards eCrime unit, HMRC is particularly used by fraudsters to scam consumers around tax deadlines, but can  The caller is insistent and doesn't give you time to think or tries to stop you happen at any time. The main aim of these emails speaking to a family member or friend  The caller asks you to transfer money is to steal money from your bank account, persuade you to send to a different account money, or get enough personal  The caller asks for your online banking passwords or four-digit card PIN information to sell on to other criminals who perform identity theft.  The caller asks you to withdraw money and hand it over for "safekeeping"  The caller offers to send a courier to your home to collect cash, PINs, cards or cheque books to "protect" you from fraud

• Build bonfires well clear of buildings, sheds, fences & hedges • Light fireworks at arm’s length using a taper, stand well back and never go • Never use flammable liquids to back to a lit firework start the fire • Never throw fireworks or put them • Never burn dangerous rubbish in your pockets or clothing such as aerosols, paint, foam furniture, rubber tyres, • Light sparklers one at a time wearing batteries, etc gloves, and place used sparklers in a bucket of water • Before you light the bonfire, check that children and animals • Never give sparklers to are not hiding inside and are a children under 5 years safe distance away • It is illegal to sell fireworks to someone under the age of 18 or to light fireworks in a public place

• Always consider the location of a bonfire or firework display, smoke drifting near or on to roads can have devastating consequences.

The Ark has been enjoying being back together after the summer break It’s been good to hear about holidays, family visits and the general chat of everyday life. Of course, everyone has grown! Our Autumn Programme is up and running and we are again enjoying a range of activities finishing with a very enthusiastic ‘Tidy Up Time’ followed by songs and a story before we head home. As always, it’s lovely to see new faces which is a weekly occurrence. As Autumn comes upon us, we will be thinking about who we are, what makes us special and unique. We are also looking forward to celebrating Harvest on 3rd October when we will be collecting items for Foodbank. As mentioned, we are always pleased to see new faces. Parents, grandparents, carers don’t need to book - just turn up at 10am on Thursday as CSK Church. The session finishes at 11.15am. We have a dedicated area for babies and their parents/carers within The Ark setup so if you have had a baby over the summer, do come and check us out. We would love to see you. The Parents’ Evening Survival Guide

Top five tips for a successful meeting Talk to your child

Discuss any problems

Listen to the teacher

Children are often apprehensive about parents’ evenings. Even a quiet, wellbehaved child may worry a teacher will complain about them. Ask your child if they have any issues with their lessons or with classmates. Make them understand that the meeting is held for their benefit. Let them know you’re on their side and that you’ll help sort things out.

Share insights about your child in the meeting. Let the teacher know if they are upset about things like a grandparent being poorly, or their dog dying. These insights may help a teacher understand why your child might be acting differently and let them know they need to be more sensitive.

Prepare

There will be other parents scheduled after you so make sure you are punctual; it will help with the general flow of the evening and you’ll have more time to talk.

They spend hours observing your child. Be aware that your child may behave differently in a school environment. If the teacher points out any negative qualities in your child don’t lose your temper. Take the suggestions on board for consideration and rebook another longer meeting for another day if you feel the situation merits it.

Write down important questions. You have a limited time with teachers. A list of questions prevents you from missing important points in the discussion.

Be on time

We pride ourselves at Hampton College on extremely positive and constructive partnerships between students and staff and the results have, once again, paid dividends.Sixth Form study is a young person’s passport to the next stage of their lives: we wish all of our Year 13 leavers well as they progress to university, college, apprenticeships or employment.”

Rebecca achieved A*AA and will go on to study Physics at Loughborough University, Annie achieved AAA and will study Criminology at the University of Winchester and Lauren achieved AAB and goes on to study Psychology at the University of Leeds. Other top university destinations for Hampton College students this year include Queen Mary London, Nottingham, Exeter, Leicester, Birmingham, UEA and Sheffield. A number of students who completed Level 3 BTEC courses achieved a complete set of distinction star passes including Daniel Conway, Matthew Cross and Lewis Hossack. Daniel will now go on to study Business Management at Nottingham Trent University, Matthew has a place on an Apprenticeship and Lewis will study Global Leadership at Leicester de Montfort University.

Cygnets After a fantastic summer break we are all ready to welcome new and old families to Cygnets preschool With lots of new resources added over the summer holidays we are sure the children will be ready to play and learn. We are already busy planning for the year ahead with festivals and celebrations along with educational learning evenings for our families on topics such as toilet training and mark making. We also want to thank the community for their support over the summer period as Lisa managed to raise what she needed to purchase the new role play items, which will be delivered this week, and more resources for the sensory area.

Hampton College Primary Since the last edition, we have said ‘goodbye’ to our first Year 6 pupils In the last week of school, our Year 6 pupils were treated to a host of events to celebrate their time at Hampton College Primary. These included lunch at the Mulberry Tree Farm restaurant (our sincere thanks to all staff at the restaurant for their hospitality), a virtual reality space walk and problem solving workshop and a Leavers BBQ for their families to share. In addition, the celebration evening proved to be a joyous and quite emotional event as we celebrated the achievements of our Year 6 pupils and waved them off to the next chapter of their education. What a fantastic start to the new academic year at Hampton College Primary. On 9 September, our Year 1 pupils received a visit from Wood Green Animal Shelter as part of their Paws, Claws and Whiskers topic and on Tuesday 10 September our Year 3 pupils experienced an ‘exotic animal encounter’! With a number of trips and events planned over the coming months, the children are sure to have an exciting start to the year.

Folksworth Pre-School Happy 40th Birthday to Folksworth Preschool

Many things have changed in our small rural village over the last 40 years. Folksworth School moved to its new school building, Townsend Way was built and Folksworth play park was created During all this time the one constant in our village has been the provision for our youngest residents. It’s evolved over time to become a wonderful resource for our community. As we move into the new academic year we have lost of exciting activities planned for our children. You will be seeing us out and about exploring our community and the countryside around us. So, watch out for us in our red puddle suits and wellies. Our staff are continuously updating their training to support our children’s learning and development with some wonderful activities planned for this term. We are looking forward to working with our next generation and what the future hold.

naturewatch They’re Coming to Get Me!

This month is when we see the invasion of the spiders into our homes or at least that is how most humans view it The reality is that the majority of spiders have been in our homes tucked out of sight, beneath floorboards, or in quiet corners, quietly going about their useful business of culling household flies and other unsavoury domestic visitors. But this time of year is spider mating season, so the males, in particular, are required to put on a show to entice a female to twin with them. The marauding male you see running across the floor is seeking out a female who has still to moult to maturity. When he finds a web he can tell instantly whether the female is suitable from chemical cues (pheromones) she has laid

down in her silk, which he detects with his feet and palps. This ritual is very important for the male spiders as getting this wrong could mean that the female spider is likely to just eat them on arrival making a nourishing meal to enhance egg-laying. This elaborate courtship routine often involves the presentation of gifts such as a wrapped fly, though some male spiders are known to cheat and just silk wrap a piece of grit. So, next time you see a spider in October don’t run and scream for help but watch the intricate courtship ritual and enjoy one of nature’s many wonders.

Lakota (Lover of Nature)

If you saw a small bird, of various shades of brown, hopping around Hampton you would, at first glance, most probably identify it as a female house sparrow ... But if you gave it a second, closer look you might well notice that it was greyer in the body, with less brownness. It might not have so many shades of deep brown in its markings either. Your closer look might well identify this bird as a dunnock. The dunnock can so easily be mistaken as a sparrow, or not really taken much notice of at all because sparrows are quite common birds. But there are dunnocks in Hampton. I have seen them in both Hargate and Vale. Apart from colour another way of telling the difference between a dunnock and a sparrow

is by the beak: the dunnock has a thinner, finer one whereas the sparrow’s beak is thicker. Dunnocks are quite shy birds and therefore quick to fly away if they see us coming. They feed mostly on the ground; searching for insects under leaves. Dunnocks are one of the main hosts for the cuckoo: female cuckoos will remove one of the dunnock’s eggs and lay one of her own to replace it. The dunnock’s eggs are bright blue but the cuckoo egg is duller and more speckled, but no-one seems to notice! Dunnock numbers seem to be able to cope

with this though because they rear two or three broods a year. Even Chaucer wrote how the cuckoo uses the dunnock to raise its young. He also refers to the dunnock as a ‘Hedsugge’ meaning ‘flutterer in the hedges’ as an observation of how they flutter their wings. The word dunnock comes from an Old English word ‘dun’ meaning dingy brown due to their apparent drabness, but if you look closer you will notice blue-greys and various shades of brown. ‘Ock’ means one who sings with another; hence dunnock.

In old folklore the dunnocks’ blue eggs would sometimes be used to protect households against witches’ spells. They would be strung out along the hob and would prevent witches from coming down the chimney.

A mum-of-four and grandmother-of-three is looking to help others cut their weight after losing almost eight stone and turning to a healthy lifestyle following her battle with ovarian cancer Sammie Todd, 52, joined her local Slimming World group in Bretton two years ago and dropped from a size 24 to a size 10 with a jaw-dropping loss of 7st 13lbs, and after seeing the difference that it has made to both her and her family’s life, she wants to help others to do the same. She said: “I was overweight for a number of years, and it really made me miss out on activities with my children and grandchildren. It wasn’t until I had cancer and I was going through to my life-saving operation that I realised I really needed to make a change to my life to help prevent diabetes and other weightrelated illnesses. “I’ll never forget that my eldest grandchild said ‘Please never leave me Nan’ and I made a promise to him that I wouldn’t. So, true to my word, I made some lifestyle changes and to this day, I’ve been doing things that I never did before.”

Since losing her weight, Sammie has a new-found energy to do things in life, including enjoying a daily 3km walk, joining her kids on roller coasters and even cooking all of her family meals from fresh. “Slimming World has really given me a completely new life. It’s funny, as a grandmother, I’d have thought that I would have known how to cook, but Slimming World has taught me a whole new way of cooking, and one that is actually easier and healthier than before. “I can still enjoy everything that I loved before, I still have my chocolate and my treats, but it’s really taught me how to eat in moderation. Before I’d eat a whole chocolate bar, now, I couldn’t even dream of eating a whole bar in one sitting, it’s really changed my relationship with food. “What I really love about Slimming World is that it has always been in my control. I’ve always

I’ve laughed with my group and I’ve cried with my group, and they’ve really been my rock. I know how important it is to stay with the group and to have that support,” she said. “Most of all, I know just how important these lifestyle changes can be to someone and how overcoming the bumps in the road can seem so difficult to you, but I’m just really looking forward to helping people achieve their shining confidence.”

Skin Deep - Basal Cell Carcinoma It began with an insect bite on my right cheek. At least I thought it was a bite though I didn’t remember being bitten. I dabbed it with tea tree oil and waited for it to heal up

I am not a sunbather, nor have I ever used sunbeds. I do like to be outdoors, cycling and kayaking but I always wear sun protection and a hat. I’m a natural redhead though, with freckles so I am in a higher risk group.

It sort of did, but then grew a little and flaked a little. It was tiny, maybe 2-3mm across but something about it bothered me. I told myself that if it hadn’t gone in a month, I’d see the GP. It didn’t change much over that time, but neither did it go away so, listening to my gut feelings, I went to see my GP feeling a little foolish (I wasn’t sick after all) and fully expected to be dismissed as one of the worried well, but after inspecting it the GP looked thoughtful. “I think it might be a BCC. A basal cell carcinoma.” I was shocked. Carcinoma was cancer, right? I was only 50. Was I going to die? A basal cell carcinoma is indeed a type of skin cancer. There are two main types of skin cancer: melanoma and non-melanoma. BCC is a non-melanoma type, and accounts for more than 80% of skin cancers in the UK. As with most skin cancers, exposure to ultraviolet (UV) light from the sun or from sunbeds is the cause, which is why they often appear most often on the face or head of fair skinned people like me. I am not a sunbather, nor have I ever used sunbeds. I do like to be outdoors, cycling and kayaking but I always wear sun protection and a hat. I’m a natural redhead though, with freckles so I am in a higher risk group. BCCs vary in appearance, from small red flaky areas; scabs that bleed but don’t heal, or pearly little lumps, often with a central depression. They are generally painless,

although sometimes they can be itchy or bleed a little if you catch them with your nail. I had to undergo a skin biopsy under local anaesthetic to confirm the diagnosis. The dermatologist was at pains to reassure me that BCCs rarely spread to other areas of the body and can be cured in almost every case, although treatment can be more complicated if the BCC has been present for a long time, or if it occurs in an awkward place, such as close to the eye or on the nose or ear. The commonest treatment for BCC is surgery under local anaesthesia. The BCC is cut away, along with some surrounding skin. There are generally just a few stitches but sometimes a skin graft is needed. Sometimes radiotherapy, curettage (scraping), cautery (heat treatment), cryotherapy (freezing treatment), photodynamic therapy (PTD), or creams may be used instead. My BCC was removed surgically. I was worried I would have a large scar as the wound seemed very large in comparison to the size of the lesion but six months later it’s faded so much that you can barely see it. Treatment is easier if a BCC is detected early. So, if you notice a new lesion on your face (or anywhere on your body) which is growing, or which bleeds and never really heals, or if your skin appearance has changed in any way don’t wait, consult your GP. It’s worth it.

Let it be your HAPPY HOUR!

‘I thought I’d never be able to do it as I genuinely had two left feet and no rhythm but quickly realised that Jazzercise was for everyone.

Active as a child, sport was always big part of my life, but when I graduated from university I’d given up sports, so quickly found myself looking for something else to keep me active I wasn’t really a gym person as I found it to be boring and honestly a little creepy. It was then that I tried local Jazzercise classes in Annapolis, Maryland with a friend and soon found myself quickly addicted! I thought I’d never be able to do it as I genuinely had two left feet and no rhythm but quickly realised that Jazzercise was for anyone. It was the only exercise programme where I switched off for an hour entirely as I tried to move and shake my hips to the top playlists.

so had to pause for a while. I desperately missed the programme and community, but when I moved to the UK and eventually Cambridgeshire, I was ecstatic as this was the birthplace of Jazzercise in the UK. Initially teaching for other owners locally, I was offered the opportunity to take on Cambourne classes in December 2015 and Peterborough classes in 2017 and realised this was my calling. I’ve since hung up my international sales and marketing

Not only did I lose myself in the hour and have fun, my body shape changed like never before as the muscle toning elements brought features out I didn’t even know existed! The ever-changing routines and class formats kept me motivated and challenged. After a few years, I was asked by my instructor if I’d be interested in teaching. Initially working as a teacher, I taught after school, but later I worked in international sales and marketing

did you know?

How Fireworks Work! Most of us love watching fireworks, but have you ever thought about how rockets work? It’s a fascinating science and if you read on, you’ll be able to amaze your friends in the pub after attending your local display Fireworks are essentially small missiles designed to explode in a controlled and colourful way. The word ‘firework’ originates from the Greek word pyrotechnics, which means, ‘fire art’ or ‘fire skill’; and modern rocket designs require both in huge amounts. Rockets mostly consist of five main parts. The tail or the stick – This protrudes from the bottom and ensures the firework shoots in a straight line, which is important for two reasons: first, so that the rocket doesn’t fly off in a random direction, and injure someone; and second, because it aids accuracy and precision when creating complex displays. Fuse - This is the part that allows the firework to be ignited safely. It allows a time delay before the main part of the firework (the charge) begins to burn. This charge ignites other, smaller fuses that make the interesting, colourful parts of the firework (the effects) explode a little later. In a basic rocket, the main fuse consists of a piece of paper or fabric that you light with a match. In a complex public firework display, fuses are lit by electrical contacts known as wirebridge fuseheads. When the firework technician pushes a button, an electric current flows along a wire into the fusehead, which ignites the main fuse. Electrical ignition has the advantage it can be done at a very safe distance. Charge - This is actually a fairly crude explosive designed to blast the rocket up into the sky. Some rockets travel at speeds as fast as a fighter jet. The charge is usually made up of tightly packed, coarse explosive gunpowder (known as black powder) and simply sends the firework high into the air, clear of spectators; it’s not responsible for the spectacular colours. Effect - This is the business end of the firework. A single firework may have just one effect, or several, packed into separate compartments which fire off in sequence, ignited by a time-delay fuse. Effects are explosives too, but different from the main charge. Each effect is made up of more loosely packed, finer explosive material, often fashioned into separate ‘stars’, which make up the small, individual, colourful explosions from a larger firework. The arrangement of patterns and colours depend on how each effect is made and packed. Head - This is the top part of the firework which contains the effect or effects. Sometimes the head has a pointed nosecone to make the firework faster and more aerodynamic and improve the chance of it going in a straight line.
