Welcome to your September edition

In this issue ...

We have a celebrity in our midst, J-Lo is in Hampton! The prettier version, we think, although we may be biased, but I am sure you will agree that she is adorable. Read her sad tail on page 5. With autumn upon us, what could be better than warming and cosy comfort food. See page 13 for the delicious Walnut Stuffed Baked Apple recipe. The Lancaster Club's Beer Festival was a success! Turn to page 14 to find out more about their festival weekend and an exiting event they have planned for next month. For that end of summer outing, check out the hidden gems of Peterborough on page 15. On page 18 find out about the wildflower project at Nene Park; it's been a few years in the making but is starting to bloom now and looks amazing! Our fitness section on page 31 has some helpful advice if you’re always feeling tired, and also the benefits of drinking more water. We hope you enjoy this edition.

‘Talking’ Benches & Board Games Psalm 133 in the Bible includes the line ‘how good and pleasant it is when God’s people live together in unity’ - indeed, that’s all that particular psalm is about, so it must be important! At CSK, one thing we love to do is help people discover just how rich life can be together. Life is better, both when we can rejoice together and when we bear each others’ burdens, so we’re trying a couple of things to tackle loneliness together this autumn in Hampton. At the recent Undercroft Weekender festival, visitors to our tent helped us decorate our two ‘talking’ benches with flowers, leaves and messages of hope. On these benches, if you choose to sit on them, it means you are willing to strike up a conversation and have a chat, rather than just pass each other by as strangers. These two benches will travel round Hampton on selected (good weather!) days to encourage our community to make some new friends - we will post their locations on Facebook and we look forward to hearing your stories. Who knows what friendships will be forged and problems solved when we actually stop and take time to listen to each other?

NEW Board Game Group

Monday afternoons - starts 9 September Chimes Coffee Shop Additionally, we want to give board game and puzzle lovers a chance to be sociable together over a drink, with a new group on Monday afternoons, 1.30-3.30pm at Chimes Coffee Shop. Join us on the sofas at the front of the coffee shop and stay for as little or as long as you’d like. We hope to see you there, whether you’d consider yourself an old-hand or a newbie at games!

Holme Short Mat Bowls Club

Holme Short Mat Bowls Club has cause for celebration as it has reached its 30 year anniversary during the 2019 season Holme Short Mat Bowls Club also gained promotion to the 1st Division of Cambridgeshire Short Mat Bowls League, overcoming teams from March, Doddington Fen Drayton and Tydd St Giles, to name but a few. An invitation to anyone locally who may like to try this indoor sport during the winter months between September and April as you are most welcome to come along to any of four taster nights planned for 24/25 September and 22/23 October at 7.30pm in Holme Village Hall. Normal sized outside bowls and flat-soled shoes are all the equipment necessary to get started. If you are new to the sport, we have bowls that you can use. It’s great fun and can get very competitive if you wish, or played socially with friendly matches arranged between non-league teams in the nearby area. Present joining fees for the coming season are £15.00 plus £2.00. (Match fee only when you play.) Great value for money! For further information please call Viv Hempsell on 01733 234089

I am sure that everyone who has ever had a pet will agree that their pet is part of their family and deserves the same consideration throughout their lives as do their human companions Most people living in the Hampton area will know J-Lo. Named for two friends of her owner, J-Lo is a little Ruby Cavalier King Charles Spaniel who, despite her size, is an official assistance dog. She is welcomed everywhere, supermarkets, cafés and restaurants, as well as hospitals and doctors’ surgeries. When suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder, J-Lo’s owner, Patrick was advised to get

in association with O&H Hampton www.ohhampton.co.uk

A Little Dog with a Big Heart J-Lo is nearly ten years old and has recently begun to have fits and tremors. She collapses at times, as though her legs have given way beneath her. Every time this happens, Patrick tries to prepare himself for the end, but instead of getting worse, she once again surprises everyone. Her heart murmur has now escalated to grade 5 and J-Lo’s various conditions can no longer be treated, only the symptoms. She is now having drugs to control

Patrick accepted when he bought a puppy that she would take up a lot of his time. However, he didn’t expect that she would need medicating throughout the day. a dog. A dog would ensure that he got out and would help him interact with other people again. Never having had a dog before, his preference was for a small canine, so he chose a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel. An easy breed, friendly natured and intelligent, just the thing for a new dog owner. Unfortunately, when J-Lo was only nine months old, she began showing all the signs of the awful condition, syringomyelia. This condition is a cavity in the spinal cord, caused by the skull being too small for the brain and naturally leads to excruciating pain. It is heartbreaking to see, but although there is no cure, she was given strong painkillers to combat the symptoms and managed to cope well. Patrick accepted when he bought a puppy that she would take up a lot of his time. However, he didn’t expect that she would need medicating throughout the day. Not that it mattered; nothing is too good for J-Lo. There followed brain tumours, leading to deafness and Cushing’s disease. This in turn caused a pot belly and insatiable hunger. She has had surgery for a soft palate which makes any sort of anaesthetic dangerous. Facial nerve paralysis led to dry eye and an inability to blink. After that came a heart murmur and sleep apnoea, another dangerous condition where she stops breathing while she is asleep.

those symptoms and make her more comfortable, and hopefully, to keep that smile on her face until the very end. Patrick has been overwhelmed by the kindness of people, many of them not personally known to him. J-Lo has over 3,000 Facebook followers who have bought a lot of merchandise to help pay for her medical expenses and who have always been supportive with everything J-Lo has needed. Recently Patrick has tried expensive herbal medicines which seem to be helping. Over the years, J-Lo’s medical expenses have amounted to more than £100,000. Letts, the diary people, have printed some hardbacked notebooks with J-Lo’s name and her paw print embossed in the cover, all to raise money to help her and to make her last days more comfortable. Now she has a personal letter from the Pope with his blessing and an invitation to 10 Downing Street to have her photograph taken If you are reading this and have not had the privilege of seeing J-Lo on your travels, her favourite places are the Hampton Lake and Chimes, the café attached to Christ the Servant King Church. J-Lo can often be seen there at Sunday services and I would like to mention our appreciation to the Reverend Sylvia Kinder for agreeing to perform a funeral service there for J-Lo when the time comes. It is rare to find such understanding.

Hampton Angling Association You may have seen a lot of activity around the lakes in Hampton recently and the members of Hampton Angling Association have been busy since its formation on July 1st organising learn to fish events, arranging competitions, erecting signs and running working parties to clean the lakes.

As a condition of the Angling Association membership, all adults must commit to 6 hours of work a year to improve the lakes and waterways in Hampton. So far, Sunset lake has taken priority in an effort to clear the litter and algae which has been very prominent this year and the hard work by its members has allowed many youngsters the opportunity to receive one to one fishing guidance from trained volunteers from the Angling Trust and the model boat club to continue using the lakes. For Hampton Angling Association membership please visit the Parish website or the HAA facebook page. For adults living within the Parish, membership is £10 per year and under 16’s are free.

HAMPTON PARISH COUNCIL UPDATE

Keeping Your Home Warm, Safely Throughout the year and particularly as the winter months draw in, we begin using our fires, burners and chimneys once again to warm our homes In Cambridgeshire 83% of chimney fires occurred between September 2018 and March 2019. The highest recorded fires were in the coldest months of the year; totalling 44 chimney fires. As the UK is about to enter in to autumn, it is the perfect time to clean out your chimney. Follow our ‘top tips’ below to ensure your home is kept safe and warm all year round.

Chimneys and Fires • Have your chimney swept once a year or more frequently if you burn wood • Avoid burning resinous woods that quickly build up soot • Only burn fuels suitable for your burner (eg. never burn anything other than wood in a wood burner) • Do not overload the grate/ appliance • Do not bank fires too high and remember to let them burn out well before you go to bed • Check the hearth, floor and furnishings near the fire for hot sparks/embers • Do not place objects on or over the mantelpiece which cause you to stand too close to the fire in order to reach them • Use a fire/spark guard to prevent accidental fires and make sure it has the kite mark or conforms to British/ European standards

• Inspect your chimney breast, particularly the roof space. Make sure it is sound and sparks/ fumes cannot escape through cracks or broken bricks.

Wood/Multi-Fuel Burners • A qualified and competent engineer should install all wood/multi-fuel burners and boilers – regular maintenance should be undertaken to prolong the working life of the appliance. Specialist servicing and maintenance will usually be provided by the company you purchase the appliance from but you can also refer to www. solidfuel.co.uk for advice and information • Ensure correct ventilation is in place when the appliance is in use • Wood burning appliances should only use the right quality wood recommended by the supplier • Regularly inspect the chimney and flues • Generally wood should be well-seasoned (usually wood kept dry and stored for around 2 years) • Avoid wet or newly felled wood as this will cause tars/ creosote deposits forming in the burning appliance and chimney • Using laminated chip boards will leave binding glue deposits

• For each slow burning period there should follow a quick burn to dry out unwanted tar/creosote deposits and to warm up the chimney again • At the end of each burning season and at least once during the season the entire system should be cooled and thoroughly cleaned to maintain top performance.

Most Importantly • Fit a smoke alarm that carries the kite mark or British Standard Number 5446 and test your alarm weekly by pressing the test button and know the life of your battery. • Always also install a CO alarm in the room where the burner is installed. Chimney Fires continue to be a common occurrence in home fires in the winter months. We experience an average of 81 chimney fires a year in Cambridgeshire alone. Whatever fire you have, or fuel you burn, it is vitally important you have your chimney swept to avoid a build-up of ash and soot.

For more information log on to www.cambsfire.gov.uk, follow us on social media or call 01480 444500.

homeandgarden

You might not know its name, but you are probably familiar with the Rudbeckia. A late summer perennial daisy. It's sometimes called Coneflower or Black-eyed Susan It flowers from early August to late September and I find it a valuable addition to the late summer garden. It does particularly well in full sun in rich, well-drained soil. You can sow them as annuals indoors in spring to set out after frost or plant as perennials in spring or autumn. Divide every 3 to 4 years and deadhead to avoid self-seeding, though personally I see self-seeding as a bonus trait in a plant! Mildew can be an issue on the foliage but can be avoided if you don't overcrowd the plants. Watch the young foliage because slugs and snails find it tasty. Once the plants are established this isn't a problem. Rudbeckia ‘Golden compass’ produces masses of classic bright yellow and black Rudbeckia flowers on a bushy plant. It grows up to 70cm in height and can be grown from seed as a half-hardy annual or a short-lived hardy perennial. Rudbeckia fulgida is the classic ‘Black-eyed Susan’, with sunfloweryellow flowers and a very black central cone. It does better in damper ground than many of the

varieties so choose this one if your garden is less well-drained. I love Rudbeckia ‘Prairie glow’. It is a stunning plant and good for adding height as it grows to 1.5m. Its huge 6cm diameter flowers have warm orange petals with yellow tips. Rudbeckia ‘Irish eyes’ is a more unusual variety with a yellowish rather than brown cone, as well as yellow florets. It repeat flowers from July through to October. If your soil is on the dry side, try Rudbeckia fulgida ‘Deamii’. It produces shining, golden flowers with jet-black cones from early September to late October and into November. It has slightly smaller flowers, but they are lovely, and abundant. Rudbeckias naturally grow in dry savannahs, grassland prairies and in the glades of rocky upland forests across North America but they have become a much-loved bushy stalwart of the herbaceous border and will delight from late summer right through the autumn.

Thinking of Selling Your Home? Here is where to start... Speak To A Mortgage Broker

Ask Questions!

To get an understanding of what you can afford to buy your next home; it’s important to know you can move and what you can buy before coming onto the market.

Ask the estate agents to see how many houses they have sold in your postcode this year and out of those how many have actually completed. The higher sold to completed percentage shows that the estate agent will look after you and the process.

Get Your House For Sale! Many people will wait until they find their dream home and then spring onto Rightmove before putting their own house up for sale, however, usually feel heartbreak as it is sold to someone more proceedable before they know it! Don’t miss out and get yours up for sale!

Have at Least Three Agents Value Your Home

How They Will Market Your Home? Do they use professional photography? Rightmove Premium Displays? Will they conduct an open house event?

Ensure You Have A Floorplan on Your Online Advert Ensure you have a floorplan on your online advert. The majority of buyers won’t click onto your property for more details if it doesn’t have a floorplan!

This isn’t just for the valuation it is also to see who you trust the most to sell your home and what marketing packages they offer.

Cut Time, Cut Costs

legally binding

legallybinding If your assets are limited and you’re lucky enough to be able to communicate successfully with your separated spouse, you may quite easily be able to agree terms for a financial settlement

Money Matters by Pete Bird, Bird & Co, Certified Public Accountants

Change of Address Due to the growing success of Bird & Co in the accountancy profession, we have now outgrown our existing offices and have moved to a new, more convenient, location for our clients. We are situated near The Three Horseshoes Pub, The Lancaster Club and the Fire Station. The best news is that these new offices are brighter and more spacious, which will help us to look after our existing clients and, of course, take on new ones. We are proud to show you the photograph (above) of our new, Grade 2 Listed premises, which is tastefully decorated and well known to local people. We look forward to seeing you all soon.

New address:

It is always advisable to obtain a clean break financial order after divorce, which you file at court after decree nisi without attending any hearing. You will need the help of a family lawyer to do this, but if you and your spouse have already done the groundwork, the costs should be minimal. The peace of mind for both of you knowing that there can be no further comeback in respect of finances, will be worth the investment. Once you move into the territory of disputed finances and complexity of assets, which could include properties, businesses and pensions, both of you should instruct your own family solicitor and try and reach a negotiated settlement. Using the services of a mediator along the way often assists. If all attempts at reaching an agreement break down, you are faced with a court application, escalating legal costs and a very long wait for a court hearing. An alternative to this frustrating process, is to take control of the costs and the court timetable and instruct your own private Judge to conduct a financial dispute resolution. The Judge will normally be an experienced barrister who may also sit as a Deputy Judge in the Family Court. This may sound expensive, but as proceedings are accelerated by many months, it is likely to cost less than the traditional procedure and greatly lower the stress levels. Discuss the private FDR option with your solicitor if you think it could help your case.

Slice about 1cm off the top of each apple. Use a corer or a sharp knife to remove the core and seeds from inside of each apple but take care not to go all the way through. Arrange the apples, cavity side up, in a ceramic baking dish. Fill each cavity with 2 tablespoons of the brown sugar-walnut mixture. Sprinkle remaining brown sugar-walnut mixture on top of apples. Pour the orange juice around apples.

e Bake the apples for 30 to 40 minutes or until they are tender. Rotate the baking dish halfway through the cooking time. Spoon the juices in the dish over apples and serve warm with ice cream or creme fraiche.

The Lancaster Club, Yaxley

Wow, what a busy, yet fantastic couple of weeks it’s been for the Lancaster Club! After several months of planning, our annual beer fest kicked off on a warm Friday with a great evening of country music featuring several local and well-known artists. On the Saturday we dedicated the day to more of a rock theme, again enjoying some great music and downing several pints of real ale as well as sampling the variety of gins available. Despite the torrential downpours at times everyone seemed to enjoy themselves, with many people returning on Sunday for a karaoke session in the afternoon. Then we did it all again a week later as we celebrated the Lancaster Club’s 50th birthday. To mark this special occasion we were assisted by members from 511 squadron (Ramsey) RAF Air Cadets, who raised our new ensign to open the event and provided an excellent short drill display. Members and guests enjoyed a birthday cream tea in the marquee, entertained by Rosie & Matt, our local ‘Chas & Dave’. Festivities continued in the evening

with excellent performances by singers BetiGee & Stacey Wood. The Lancaster club would like to thank all those members and nonmembers who, despite the very poor weather at times, came along and supported our events. It was great to see so many people, old and new in the club enjoying what was on offer. Also, we would like to thank the tolerance of the local residents who perhaps had their normal peaceful weekends slightly disrupted. October sees another popular event at the Lancaster Club with another German Octoberfest night on Saturday 12 October. The event is also open to non-members (subject to being signed in) so why not come along for a good night of entertainment as well as reasonably priced fine German beer and food. If you are interested in becoming a member of the Lancaster Club, why not pop in for a quick drink and have a chat with our bar staff who can give you details on becoming a member.

Take to the skies and experience what it's like to be a pilot, challenge yourself to fly to Italy, Australia or anywhere you wish. Three Hidden Gems in the Heart of Peterborough By Devonie Day

Peterborough is full of fun, family days out and small local restaurants, but there might be some which you have not discovered yet Here are our top three favourite hidden gems in the heart of Peterborough.

 The Priestgate Vaults Escape Rooms Located in one of the city’s most historic buildings, Peterborough Museum has a wealth of stories to fascinate and enthral the whole family. With amazing objects and interactive displays for all ages, the collections comprise over 200,000 items of great national and international importance. Deep beneath Peterborough Museum are a number of cellars which date back to the year 1536. Older than the current Museum building itself and reflecting nearly 500 years of Peterborian history, the museum cellars were opened in 2015 as The Priestgate Vaults - an attraction which allowed visitors to meet people who lived on the site of the Museum and hear stories of its history. Now, a new experience has come to Peterborough Museum; The Priestgate Vaults Escape Rooms. Each vault illustrates a different time period which is used to create the eerie atmosphere and storylines of the various escape rooms. In 1536, the vaults were at ground level in a Tudor Manor House, and you are challenged to uncover the secret clues hidden in Peterborough’s very own Humphrey Ormes parlour, or to solve the mystery of the 1815 Georgian wine cellar. The last vault is set in 1854 where it was used as a morgue, but can you escape or will you be buried alive? Entry fees are extremely affordable at just £4 for adults and £3 for under 16s. However, anybody under the age of 16 must be accompanied by an adult. There is a limit to three children per adult when entering the vaults. vivacity.org/heritage/priestgate-vaults/escape-the-vaults

 Railworld Wildlife Haven Described as a ‘hidden gem’ by almost all of its visitors and now in its 30th year, Railworld Wildlife Haven is an amazing family day out that even the dog can enjoy! With its very own nature haven, 2,000 square foot of model railway and other exhibits, the Railworld Wildlife Haven charity is run solely by volunteer workers and is an exciting and intriguing way to spend an afternoon in beautiful scenery, whatever the weather. Children can enjoy learning more about trains and nature through interactive activities that encourages families to spend as much time as they want in this welcoming environment. Benches and picnic spaces are placed all around the area, providing ideal locations to enjoy your lunch with a view. A great place to explore, described as ‘a wonderful experience,’ ’inspiring’ and ‘a fun adventure’ by visitors, it is only a 10-15 minute walk from the city centre. www.railworld.org.uk

 Thee Bumble Inn Again, only a short walk from the city centre is Peterborough’s first micropub, The Bumble Inn. Opened in 2016, and voted as 2018 Peterborough CAMRA pub of the Year, this is a great place to have a late afternoon drink either by yourself, or with friends and family. All their beer, lagers and ales have been carefully selected from local and national breweries and there’s even a very handy sample and buy platter allowing you to choose a few beers of your choice to try. In addition to their vast selection of beers, The Bumble Inn also supplies a wide range of soft drinks, spirits, wines, tea and coffee. They also stock a range of fun and unique snacks which include their very own homemade pork pies. People describe ‘very good cask beer quality’, ‘best pint of lager’ and ‘lovely pork stroganoff pies’ at The Bumble Inn, but don’t just take their word for it … chill out, taste beers and meet new people in this friendly atmosphere from 12pm daily. www.facebook.com/bumbleinn thebimbleinn.wordpress.com

Wildflowers Bloom at Nene Park In summer 2016, corporate volunteer groups from organisations including, Lloyds, Skanska, YBS and the Environment Agency all dedicated their time to Nene Park with the aim of increasing the number of wildflowers in the Park – it has taken a few years but the fruits of their labour are now in bloom Chris Park, environment project development officer at Nene Park Trust, the charity which manages Nene Park commented: “In the UK, we know that bee populations are in decline. We want to play our part in providing a range of wildflowers to provide bees with local food sources across the seasons. “Our visitors may well have noticed over the last five years or so that we have been mowing less of the grass around Nene Park. Not only does this reduce our carbon footprint but the long grass also does wonderful things for wildlife. Thanks to our volunteers and their support in planting a greater number of wildflowers, we’ve been able to develop numerous pockets of wildflowers across the Park which the bees are very much enjoying!” Nene Park is committed to planting native wildflowers, especially those which have evolved here in this area of the UK alongside other native wildlife and organisms. This means that they often benefit each other and are more

attractive to a wider range of pollinators including moths, butterflies, beetles, flies and of course bees. Nene Park uses reputable seed merchants but where possible, with volunteer help, collects and uses wildflower seeds from elsewhere in the Park. Chris added: “Turf turning was an experiment to see if we could introduce more wildflowers to the Park. It has taken time, but I’m pleased to say that it works and the numerous pockets of colourful wildflowers buzzing with pollinators are testament to all the effort of our volunteers. By flipping sections of turf upside down and sowing seeds in those areas, it was such a simple thing for us to do! But the impact on the environment is really significant – it’s great to see the beautiful flowers now in bloom.” Why not explore Ferry Meadows this summer and enjoy the long grasses and colourful wildflowers? Watch the bees buzzing and the butterflies flutter by, especially around Oak Meadow and Coney Meadow!

Talking Bugs? Bugs are capable of complex and amazing communication with each other, with other animals and with plants These communications evolved to enable bugs to avoid threats, secure resources, and breed. However, the threats to bugs from humans far exceed the communication ability of bugs. Communication depends on an organism emitting a signal and another organism receiving the signal. There are several mediums that can carry this information. Humans perceive the world primarily through ‘audible’ sound and ‘visible’ light, with important added information from touch, smell and taste. We struggle to even conceive perception outside these parameters, but many organisms build up their ‘picture’ of the world in a way that is alien to humans.

Lakota (Lover of Nature)

What an abundance of blackberries there are around the lakes this year. There are huge ones around the front of James’s Pond, in Vale; a size which is often unusual for wild blackberries The walk around Beeby’s Lake (Hampton Waters) also has a great harvest of them as well. They are nature’s natural harvest just waiting for us to collect them for delicious apple and blackberry pies! Now I am no expert cook but I am told that they can be used for cheesecakes, jam, crumbles, smoothies and cupcakes. And all for free! And in addition they are full of vitamins and fibre. Once picked though blackberries should frozen straight away if they are not to be cooked. Spread on a tray they freeze well, or they can be cooked and then frozen, apparently. We have enjoyed them, according to archaeological evidence, for over 8 000 years. Apparently in folklore the 11th October (Old Michaelmas) should be the last date when we pick blackberries. If we overstep this date tradition has it that the

devil spits or stamps on the berries making them unfit to eat! This could have been derived from the fact that often a grey mould covers the fruit later in the season, as they lose their freshness and are affected by the cooler, damper weather. The Greeks used the blackberry as a remedy for Gout, and the Romans made a tea from the leaves of the blackberry plant to treat various illnesses. Often the leaves would be brewed to use for treating mouth sores and bleeding gums. Blackberries have a strong colour and this was used to good effect to make dyes. They even proved successful as a natural form of barbed wire. The earliest evidence of humans eating blackberries was found in a 2500 year old preserved bog body in the Netherlands when they found remains of blackberries in the woman’s stomach.

Often people refer to blackberries as bramble bushes, as in such children’s books as the ‘Brambley Hedge’ stories, whereas the word bramble really means an impenetrable hedge. And the blackberry isn’t really even a berry botanically speaking; comparing them to holly berries and hawthorn berries it’s easy to see why: the black berry is made up of lots of small parts. And speaking of impenetrable hedges just be careful of the blackberry’s quite large vicious thorns if you do decide to go foraging this autumn. Or alternatively I can witness that cultivated varieties grow well in Hampton gardens!

Our first session back is Monday 9 September We can’t wait to hear all about the fantastic memories that you and your families have made over the summer break, so come along when we start back and tell us what you got up to with your little ones. For those of you who don’t yet know about us, Mini Movers is a stay and play session for mums, dads, grandparents and carers with a child from newborn to reception age. We have a weekly craft activity and group singalong which the children love! We meet 1.15 - 2.45pm Monday (term time only) at the

Hampton Vale Community Centre. It’s just £1 per family which includes refreshments. If you haven’t been to us before and are thinking about coming to a session, just come along and make new friends with your child. The sessions are run by volunteers from KingsGate Community Church. The Ark CSK Summer Events at CSK - Fun for all the family Our Lego ‘ Big Build’ Days proved very popular at the beginning of the summer holidays with each of the four sessions over the two days being busy with some very creative families Here are just a few examples of the models made. Our ‘Lego Throne’ also proved very popular for photo opportunities. Once the Lego was packed away it was time to start thinking about summer crafts in mid August. This was our third crafts afternoon of the year and it was great to see familiar faces and welcome new ones. The church was filled with colour - beads, straws, weaving, bird houses… a range of crafts for all ages to enjoy. We also enjoyed an enthusiastic storytelling session with

Heather and some great action songs. After the summer break, we look forward to the return of our baby and toddler group, The Ark. Starting back on Thursday 5th September, 10am - 11.15am, there will be our usual range of toys and activities, room to play and time to chat, not forgetting some lovely refreshments. We also have regular children’s groups - Glow, Shine and Illumin8 - which meet during the morning service on Sunday at 10am. Come and join us.

Hampton College It’s been a busy few weeks at Hampton College. Students have completed their GCSE and A Level exams and are beginning to get their results Year 11 students enjoyed their Prom, at Holiday Inn, Thorpe Wood. Nearly 120 students attended the event with family, friends and staff witnessing their arrival in a range of luxury cars. The highlights of the awards included Harry and Samiah winning Prom King and Queen and the best dressed students being voted by staff as Jossilyn Williams and Bailey Baker, whilst Harry Corner was the most likely to appear on Love Island! The purpose of the Year 11 Prom is to reward the students for all their hard work and excellent behaviour throughout the year. The last week of term was a very busy one, with Year 10 students participating in work shadowing across the city, with a large number of students enjoying a placement at Whirlpool. Students in Years 7-9 enjoyed multiple activities, with residential trips to Germany, Birmingham and a Bushcraft trip where students enjoyed fireside camping, archery, Tribes Got Talent, rescuing the teacher from a plane crash and learning new survival skills, plus going without mobile phones for

24

the week, whilst completely immersed in survival and the woodland experience. Students on the Football Frenzy activity enjoyed a backstage tour at the Emirates Stadium in London and the Posh ground in Peterborough. Students also enjoyed trips to Hamerton Zoo, a visit from Exotic Pets, riding lessons, rowing, walking in Wells, cycling, a cinema trip and a day at Alton Towers, plus many other activities within school, such as circus skills and Harry Potter fun. Tutor groups R-JOW, P, KAS and V-EVK all achieved the prestigious Head of School Award and had the afternoon off school to enjoy fun playing on an inflatable assault course and large bouncy castle which was set up on the field. Lunchtimes continue to be busy for Head's Commendations in Mr Gilligan's office. Students had been nominated for various positive events, including assisting with Sports Day, working on design projects in their own time, working hard throughout Year 10 in their English lessons, qualifying in the Maths Challenge, boxing success outside school and acting as sports

leaders at our Primary Sports Day. Year 8 students also went to the Ryman Enterprise Challenge Update at Wembley Stadium. The team performed their enterprising ideas at the Grand Finale with Theo Paphitis and Diversity stars Jordan and Perry at Wembley. We were extremely lucky this half term to have New Rules play a Rewards Concert for our students who always do the right thing and really represent our College values. The band has been tipped to be the next big band in the UK and was formed and is managed by the UK’s premier pop management company Modest! Management (One Direction, Little Mix, Olly Murs). New Rules has dates for concerts at the start of the autumn term, but later this year will be the main support act on the Little Mix tour. The band was a huge hit with students who engaged in the

Year 5

performance and were eager to ask questions in the Q+A session the boys gave. At the end of the performance the boys did a meet and greet and were inundated with young people who wanted photos and autographs. Year 5 children from our Primary Phase recently took part in a WW2 themed event to give them a taster of what to expect of Hampton College Secondary Phase when they join us in 2020. The day consisted of a carousel of activities including: a WW2 themed Escape Room, with various problem solving and team building challenges using skills from a variety of subjects, such as maths, German, English, history, DT and business, an interview task where students were interviewing people from WW2 and a music and dance session where students were learning how to jive.

How physiotherapy can help your pet For centuries physiotherapy has been used on us but it wasn’t until around 35 years ago that the principles started to be applied to our pets

Please call Abi on

07913 422206

The aim of physiotherapy is to reduce the pain caused by disease, injury or surgery, improved function and ultimately to help our pets enjoy life again. There are many pet health problems physiotherapy can help with, including:

Post-operatively Physiotherapy can be hugely beneficial following surgery. It aids the healing process, reduces pain, increases muscle strength and joint use leading to a faster recovery and better return to normal, happy life.

Long-term or degenerative conditions Often these patients additional suffer with compensatory discomfort. With the right care these symptoms can be reduced, the degenerative process slowed and the quality of life improved.

Soft tissue injury This can cause considerable inflammation and pain usually after a sudden trauma. Physiotherapy helps the healing process, reduce the pain and restore the pet’s movement.

Weight loss Obesity is growing problem in the pet world and increasing activity levels is one of the best ways to tackle it. Physiotherapy can provide a structured, low impact and safe programme to aid the pet’s weight loss.

Wound healing and scar tissue reduction Whether from surgery or injury, wound healing can be complex. Physiotherapy treatments can help here too, it aims to aid and accelerate the healing process, reduce bacterial infection and can also minimize or reduce scar tissue restriction later on.

Big Bang Theory By Karen Campbell

Thinking of cutting a fringe? Read on… Bangs are hairdresser-speak for a fringe, and they are all the rage right now as celebrities like Miley Cyrus, Emma Stone and Reese Witherspoon have all been photographed sporting them. Bangs can be a fun and easy way to freshen-up your hairstyle, but you need to know which bangs will suit your face shape best.

Round Go for thick side-swept bangs cut at a strong angle to break the shape of your face. Avoid straight-cut bangs as they will emphasise the roundness.

Long heavy bangs that fall just below the eyebrows and are tapered down towards the outer corner of the eyes will soften the face. You can push the bangs to one side to further break-up the shape. Avoid short straight bangs as they will make your face look squarer.

Long Long choppy bangs with longer soft layers around the face with shorten and soften your features. Baby bangs on the other hand will make your face look longer.

Heart-shape Side-swept bangs which run from the brows to the cheekbones will emphasise your eyes and pretty, delicate chin. A full, blunt wide fringe will emphasise your wider forehead.

Oval You are lucky. Your balanced features mean you can choose any style you like. Choose to emphasise the features you like best. Baby bangs will emphasise beautiful brows; eyebrowgrazing bangs will draw attention to your eyes, and if you love your cheekbones go for a Bardot style with soft layers that end at the top of the checks. Samantha was diagnosed with Fibromyalgia when she was 39 after visiting a consultant about her pain. She was forced to change her job because of the impact the condition had on her life.

Living with an Invisible Illness Everything known so far about the chronic pain condition, Fibromyalgia ... It affects seven times as many women as men, but is notoriously hard to diagnose. Fibromyalgia was, until fairly recently, relatively unheard of. However, fibromyalgia syndrome (FMS) is thought to affect one in every 25 people - and doctors admit that there’s still more to learn about the condition that’s notoriously hard to diagnose and treat. It hit the headlines when Desert Island Discs host, Kirsty Young, announced that she would be taking a break from her presenting duties for ‘a number of months’ because of the effects of FMS. Lady Gaga is another well-known sufferer, and the famously hard-worker even had to cancel her 2017 European tour because of 'severe physical pain that has impacted her ability to perform'. Here’s what you need to know about the chronic pain condition that currently affects seven times as many women as men:

What is Fibromyalgia? According to the NHS, FMS is 'a long-term condition that causes pain all over the body'. Fibromyalgia is still poorly understood, despite the fact that it currently affects 5% of the British population. The NHS states that the condition can be triggered by 'a physically or emotionally stressful event,' such as an injury, giving birth, having an operation or even the grieving process.

What are the symptoms of Fibromyalgia? FMS is characterised by 'chronic, generalised aches and pain, extreme fatigue and interrupted sleep, which affects people mentally as patients become frustrated and have reactive anxieties and depression. Other symptoms include headaches, irritable bowel syndrome, poor concentration and memory, and pins and needles in the hands and feet. Patients are sensitive to touch and something as simple as a hug from a child, or stubbing a toe, feels far more painful than it would for others.

What’s it like to live with Fibromyalgia? These symptoms certainly ring true for Samantha, 48, who was diagnosed with fibromyalgia when she was 39 after visiting a consultant about her pain. She was forced to change her job because of the impact the condition had on her life. "I suffer from a number of illnesses, including chronic fatigue and an autoimmune disease, but my fibro symptoms can be debilitating,” she told us.

“I won’t let chronic illness stop me” Samantha copes with the pain by keeping positive. “I try to practice to be proud of myself for things that are probably easy for ablebodied people, but for me it could be a big achievement, such as making it through the whole day at work without throwing up or blowing up.” Despite her daily struggles, Sarah is determined to raise awareness and help others: “I won’t let chronic illness stop me,” she said.

If you’re worried about any of the symptoms, book an appointment with your GP to discuss further - or if you know someone who’s suffering, Fibromyalgia Action UK (FMAUK) is a charity that offers information and support to people with fibromyalgia. For help or guidance, call the charity’s helpline: 0300 999 3333

What are the treatments for Fibromyalgia? Sadly, the condition still needs more research in order to decide what the exact symptoms and causes are. However, there are ways to fight the pain. A rheumatologist can help plan a graded exercise program via the physiotherapy unit and prescribe pain control and pain modulation medication. Are you tired all the time? How do you feel when you wake up? Are you refreshed and ready for the day? Or do you feel drained, like you've hardly slept. GPs report that more patients are complaining of lack of energy. The syndrome even has its own name, TATT which means tired all the time. If you constantly feel lethargic it is important not to ignore it. TATT is common but there are steps you can take to help yourself. There are many different causes of fatigue, and a good place to start is a chat with your GP. If you feel overwhelming exhaustion, which gets worse rather than better with activity, and does not improve with rest, you might be suffering from myalgic encephalopathy (ME) or chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS). There is not a definitive cure for these conditions but there are treatments and self-help measures that can help to ease the symptoms. A GP will test for other medical problems that can cause tiredness, such as anaemia, thyroid issues, food intolerances or diabetes. Many cases of TATT are related to mental health problems, such as depression and anxiety. Traumatic life events, stress and money worries can also cause fatigue. Talking therapies can help in these cases,

TATT

and your doctor may be able to refer you to a counselling service. If a GP has ruled out more serious underlying causes but you still feel tired, there are lifestyle changes that will help. First make sure you’re getting enough good quality sleep. Make it a priority for a few weeks to see how much better you feel. The Royal College of Psychologists’ advice is to have both a regular bedtime and wake time, and avoid napping. If you struggle to drop off try a soak in a warm bath before you go to bed because this will make you feel calm, and the drop in body temperature when you exit the bath fools the body to start to prepare for sleep. Reduce your stress levels by scheduling relaxation time into your day. This could be something as simple as listening to your favourite music or meeting friends for a chat. A good diet also plays a role in increasing your energy levels. Try eating small snacks throughout the day, rather than one large meal in the evening. Avoid alcohol and drink more water. Cutting caffeine will also help but cut down gradually to minimise the risk of headaches. Finally, a little light exercise is another proven way to fight fatigue. Even a quick 15-minute walk around the block will give boost your energy.

Water Works

Why we should all drink more water

Ask most people how much fluid they are supposed to drink in a day, and they will reply "Eight glasses of water." This number has seeped into the public consciousness over the past couple of decades so it might surprise you to know that it has very little basis in science! However, it is important to stay properly hydrated. Fewer people know that if you feel thirsty you are already dehydrated, and this has a real impact on how your body and brain function. Dehydration leads to a decrease in our physical performance. Losing just 2% of your body's water contact can cause fatigue, problems with temperature control, and make exercise feel more difficult, physically and mentally, and it's not uncommon for people to lose 6-10% of their body's total water content through sweat during a workout, and as muscle is 80% water this increases muscle stress. Our brains are also strongly influenced by hydration. Studies have shown that even mild dehydration impacts brain function. In separate studies of men and women it was found that about 1.5% fluid loss impaired mood and concentration, decreased working memory, and increased feeling of anxiety, fatigue and the frequency of headaches. 1.5% fluid loss can easily occur during normal daily activities, never mind during exercise or hot weather. Worryingly the effects of dehydration are shown to be worse in children and the elderly.

There has been some scientific interest in the effect of increasing hydration on migraine sufferers. So far, some studies have shown that while keeping hydrated doesn't stop migraines completely, sufferers in the studies reported that the frequency and intensity of the migraines decreased when they were properly hydrated. Constipation is a common health problem and can be serious in children and the elderly. Low water consumption does appear to be a risk factor in these cases. Some studies have shown that carbonated water seems to help the situation more than still water though scientists haven't yet explained why. Alcohol acts as a diuretic, so it makes you lose more water than you take in. The dehydration effects of alcohol are responsible for the thirst, fatigue, and headache which inevitably accompany a hangover. It's a good idea to alternated alcoholic drinks with water and to drink a large glass of water before going to sleep, after a night out on the town. Finally, water both increases satiety and boost metabolism so is great if you're trying to lose weight. Studies show that dieters who drank half a litre of water before each meal lost 44% more weight over a period of 12 weeks. Try it. Make a real attempt to stay properly hydrated for a week and monitor the results. You may be surprised.

It seems that not a week goes by lately without warning of a new scam – with cyber criminals becoming more and more sophisticated

Be armed with the right information in the

BATTLE AGAINST THE SCAMMERS An email from a supposed legal or Government source can be so convincing that it can fool even the shrewdest among us, as can a request to transfer money or pay a bill. However, the fight against scams is hotting up. As well as the many reliable channels which can inform

and advise about scams (including the UK Action Fraud), there is also a user-friendly Friends Against Scams website - a National Trading Standards Scams Team initiative which aims to protect and prevent people from becoming victims of scams by empowering communities to 'Take a Stand Against Scams.'

For details of existing and latest scams to affect the public, trades and businesses across Cambridgeshire visit cambridgeshireinsight.org.uk/capasp/ Safe Local Trades are proud to be a partner of this initiative.

32

Friends Against Scams is designed to inspire action, highlight the scale of the problem, change the perceptions of why people fall for scams and make scams a community, regional and national topic. And what’s more, Friends Against Scams offers a free, easy-to-use online learning service where anyone can learn about the different types of scams and how to spot and support a victim. The session – which takes around 15 minutes to complete – can be done in the comfort of your own home, in the workplace or even on your phone. Upon completion you will even receive a certificate. Find out more by visiting: {www.friendsagainstscams.org.uk/ training/friends-elearning } With increased knowledge and awareness, people can make scams part of everyday conversation with their family, friends and neighbours, which will enable them to protect themselves and others. Friends Against Scams also offer easily accessibly awareness sessions run by SCAMchampions, who are trained and supported by the NTS Scams Team. Each 45-minute awareness session is fun and interactive and a chance to meet other people who want to ‘Take a Stand Against Scams’. The website will have all the details.

Scams can vary from postal to online. Don’t be caught out by things like: Phishing

Where you receive an email that pretends to be from an authority (e.g., your bank) in which you’re asked to give out your passwords or personal information such as your address, telephone number, or other data.

Pharming

The fraudulent practice of directing online users to a fake website, which mimics the appearance of a real / legitimate one.

Romance Scams

A confidence scam, whereby a criminal displays fake romantic intentions towards a victim in order to gain their affection to then extort money.

Impersonation of UK officials Criminals impersonate a UK official to obtain personal information by claiming that the victim is due a refund or must make an urgent payment.

Ad Clicking

Where hackers encourage you to click on a link (perhaps by email, or on a webpage) which will then open malware or simply ask for your personal info.
