Welcome to 2017 and our New Meridian Handbook Welcome everyone to our very first New Meridian Association Handbook. Wow, we could not be happier, how amazing and exciting has the last three months been, we have definitely got off to a flyer. In our wildest dreams we could not have imagined the support, generosity, loyalty and kindness shown to us by our Group Organiser Members and Partner Members. It is all about teamwork, working together as one, to quote Tony Henthorn and Steve Reed, it is a Buying and Selling business and they are so right. I have personally met new tour operators, attractions and hotels, who I am now working with, for my future group trips, it is so refreshing, exciting times ahead I am sure. I know I am not alone, many of our GTO members have also met Partnership members, especially at our Bournemouth weekend, who they are now working with, our Association is all about – supporting each other. I am delighted to announce we have all our Insurance completed, with massive thanks to Andy Day at Wrightsure, Lin Wilson and Ellen Walker, they have all been working incredible hard to get the very best offers for everyone, I simply cannot thank them enough. Our membership is increasing by the day, thanks to the many travel shows we have attended and the people who have contacted us personally. I love the recruitment side, talking to new people, some who don’t even realise they are group organisers and have now become part of our ever growing network. Shortly we plan to continue our workshops, something that I started with Jayne Kerr many, many years ago, knowing
Jayne you will guess our first one was held in Disneyland Paris, great fun and also very educational. These will continue in various locations around the country, yes I do mean country, because regardless of what you may hear in certain corners, we are a National Organisation and we do have members from all around the UK. Marian Durbidge said to me “Sylvia we need to encourage more young people to join” we are now doing our best to inspire a younger generation to become GTO’s, I am having chats with various associations, so fingers crossed we will achieve our aim in the not too distant future. I have really enjoyed putting together Meridian Lines and Sunrise together these last few years, but now is time to hand the baton to our Business Development Manager Tony Henthorn (you can read all about him in our last Newsletter). Tony will now be editing the Newsletter and will appreciate any suggestions/experiences both good and bad you may have to be included in the April edition. Tony is a great guy, lots of fun, very hardworking and dedicated to his work. Welcome Tony, we are so lucky to have you. Everyone should now have their personalised membership badge, and passes to both The National Trust and The English Heritage, please make me aware if you don’t. Our fams are coming fast and furious, twenty of us are off to Madeira very soon, we have Cardiff, Dovedale, Windsor and of course our AGM at the Rendezvous Hotel, Skipton (Gateway to the Dales) to look forward to in October, more details later in the

Handbook. Plus I am in negotiations with new hotel Partner Members, as to how we can plan site visits with a possible overnight stay, so we are able to sample their delights and experience a new destination for our groups. We have our Facebook page thanks to Ellen Walker and soon we do hope to have a website up and running, to keep everyone in touch and I plan to send out a monthly email to keep everyone up-dated on all the latest news and deals that sometimes require a quick turn-around. For all our new members I would like to introduce you to our remarkable committee, without whom nothing would happen and nothing would be possible, they are totally dedicated and the nicest people I have the pleasure to know: Christine Howard – Treasurer Ellen Walker – Secretary Jackie Hough – Membership Secretary Liz Thornthwaite – Financial Adviser Marian Durbidge – Theatre Consultant and Adviser Glen Thomas – Travelsphere Also unlimited support from Tony Henthorn, Steve and Judith Reed, Andy Day, Agi Rusinek, Maureen Willett, Jacqui Garside and Tracy Sutton Lambert whose help we all value and appreciate. Happy Travelling Sylvia Saxon Chair

Experienced publisher joins New Meridian team After completing over 40 years in various media organisations (Guardian, emap, Expo and latterly Diversified Communications), Peterborough-based Tony Henthorn has launched his own company (Cheeky Monkey Media Limited) and will be offering his experience and knowledge to companies in publishing and tourism markets. Tony, who has published the Village Tribune for the past 14 years (now serving 13 villages in North Peterborough) will be helping create a charity-status organisation for the much loved ‘Trib and launching new editions of the magazine in 2017. Having spent the past 10 years engaged in the tourism market (primarily through group travel), Tony remains involved in a number of tourism-based projects which will include new platform launches next year. “Recently, I have been working with the team at New Meridian to help them develop their association and I’m very excited about their plans for 2017 and beyond,” Tony explains. “I’m currently giving support to increase membership and developing partner relationships - they are a great bunch of people who really have their hearts in the group travel market.” Tony is also co-owner of ‘My Day Out’ - a web-based attraction-locator, which he runs in partnership with Norfolk inventor, Mark Oakden. Sylvia Saxon puts Tony on the spot: 1. What do you think you will enjoy most about being our Business Development Manager? I’m really enjoying working with the team at New Meridian and looking
forward to supporting them in creating a really effective association for active group travel organisers. My experience across a broad range of media, coupled with over 30 years of management experience and understanding of the travel market means that I can support the New Meridian in a wide variety of ways. 2. Where would you like to see yourself in 5 years’ time? I’m 58 on my next birthday, so in five years’ time I will be 63. Having worked for over 40 years in large to medium sized media businesses (The Guardian, emap and latterly Expo Management - who were bought by Diversified Communications in 2014), I treated myself to a summer sabbatical last year and now I’m ready to move forward on a number of ideas which have been brewing over the past few years. 3. As a child what did you want to be? Being born and brought up in Oldham by rugby (League) loving parents, I always wanted to play for Oldham Rugby. I did play a few times for the county (Lancashire) team, but soon realised that I was never going to be good enough to play at the top level. In my early teens, I developed a passion for photography, something I still enjoy today. 4. What has been your best holiday? My ‘best’ holiday was a three week trip to the Seychelles in 1987 when I married my wife Alison - that reminds me, next year will be our 30th anniversary!!! I also LOVE New York!!!
New Meridian Handbook 2017 NM Handbook 2017.indd 21
5. What’s your essential gadget to take on holiday? I always take my diary - I’m very much a ‘list man’ and cannot go anywhere without my diary and a pencil! 6. Your best character trait? People who know me will probably say my honesty (although I have often been TOO honest for my own good!). As I’ve got older I believe I have become a much more compassionate and considered individual - and of course (coming from the North), I have to say ‘my sense of humour’ - I love to laugh!!! 7. Career highlight? I’m proud of my track record of selecting and supporting talented individuals in the businesses I have worked for. In the 1980s I convinced a young man NOT to go to university and become an accountant, but to work for me instead at the Peterborough Evening Telegraph. 20 years later he was the Chief Executive of Johnson Newspapers. 8. Where would you most like to travel in the world? I would like to explore more of the Asian countries. I have visited Hong Kong a number of times (courtesy of my wife’s global role with a large media company) and really enjoy the ‘fusion’ between East and West that Hong Kong offers - I think Vietnam might be on the cards for 2017

‘An eventful year!’ 2016 was without question an eventful year and perhaps the biggest lesson has been how politics can impact the travel sector. Despite a series of high profile terrorist attacks, a bruising US election, the travel industry remains resilient by adapting its offering to meet the changing travel patterns. Despite the uncertainties that hang over tourism I believe the year ahead remains positive. Regardless of where or why people travel, there’s little doubt they will go. Travel is now considered a birthright as well as the ultimate luxury. South Quay Travel & Leisure are part of the Cruise and Maritime Travel & Leisure Group. Having specialised in the cruise sector for the past four years, last summer, I moved over to “head up” South Quay Travel & Leisure. We’ve been quite a “sleeping giant”, and only when meeting with existing and new group organisers – whether a private organiser or a “blue chip“organisation – I am always told “wow we didn’t realise you had so much to offer “. We have been arranging group travel for over 25 years and we know how important it is to get it right and help make your experiences memorable. We offer a very personal service

Windsor magic!
Taking the trophy!
2016 was another incredible year for Royal Windsor during which time we marked the 400th anniversary of the death of Shakespeare, celebrated 150 years of racing at Windsor Racecourse, welcomed back the Concours d’Elegance and hosted a multitude of incredible events to mark HM The Queen’s 90th birthday. From Her walkabout on Her actual birthday on 21st April to the stunning HMQ90 show in May Windsor was very much in the media spotlight. Groups were treated to Gardeners lunches and Royal Celebration Afternoon Teas at The Savill Garden, wine and beer festivals and live music at Ascot Racecourse, a spectacular laser and fireworks show at Royal Windsor Racecourse, Shakespeare festivals, music and arts festivals and horticultural shows. The year was topped off by the immensely popular exhibition – Fashioning for a Reign: 90 years of style from The Queen’s Wardrobe. This year we look forward to another year of wonderful events that are sure to appeal to groups including the Royal Windsor Horse Show, the Royal Windsor Rose and Horticultural Show, the Royal Windsor Jaguar Festival and not to be missed - a special exhibition - Restoring Windsor: the Castle after the Fire. When fire broke out at Windsor Castle in 1992, it made headlines around the world. Now, 25 years on, this exhibition presents the story of the battle to stop the flames and save irreplaceable works of art, as well as the subsequent restoration project.
