Welcome ...

April is one of my favourite months of the year. Like a child bursting into a room full of laughter and smiles; April arrives, and I always feel that bit happier. Longer days, the weather improving, my son’s birthday and, of course, all the Easter chocolate!

In this issue, Rosie is on a mission to proudly defend our great city after the negative publicity that the national press gave Peterborough. Turn to page 28 and celebrate all we can be grateful for and positive about, right here on our doorstep. Easter will soon be here and we have something for everyone; from Cathedral events, Easter egg hunts to the Beer Fest at Charters and music listings. We also offer some unique ideas for organising your own Easter egg hunt on page 26. If the brighter evenings are making you start to think of holidays, we have a travel guide with ideas for short breaks on page 33. Not forgetting our new Senior Scene section; we are delighted to be the only magazine in the area catering for this age group. We are totally inclusive and offer something for everyone. Hope you enjoy this issue. As always, keep in touch on Facebook and Instagram, we love to hear your views and opinions.

SCENE BUSINESS FOCUS
The driving force behind my business My decision to setup PSN Private Hire was fuelled by the high number of complaints I’d heard about of recent taxi journeys taken by friends and as read on social media. I felt this was my chance to create a new Private Hire taxi service that builds a reputation for, quite simply, making an effort.
PSN Private Hire Driving you with care T:Airports 07484 290227 & Seaports E: psnprivatehire@gmail.com Any UK destination Find me onweddings, Facebook, Yell.com, UK holidays, Safe daysLocal out etc. Services, Bizify.co.uk, WhatsApp, Google andtravel Yahoo Corporate/executive
I achieve this by delivering a professional service as standard and I’m focused on gaining complete customer satisfaction. Driven by the core desire to offer ‘good old fashioned’ customer service into the Peterborough taxi scene, this has led to me being listed exclusively on Peterborough’s Safe Local Services website and a recommended Holiday Transfer specialist with Whittlesey Travel.
My service also has backup and reliability. I’m an independent owner operator of PSN Private Hire and I also work in partnership with a team of other like minded independent private hire drivers. We’re currently in the process of growing our collaborative business we call Professional Drivers in Partnership. We offer a high quality level of service delivering professionalism, safety and care.
We offer clean and immaculate vehicles, smartly dressed drivers, and a personal, attentive service. Your complete satisfaction is our motivation. If you’re looking for transport to any UK destination and you want a safe, caring, personal service, then contact me, Paul at PSN Private Hire Airport Transfers. Pre-booked local journeys are also available with notice. ‘Driving you, with Care.’

NEWS Life-saving equipment installed in Peterborough centre, thanks to the Peterborough Lions Club The generous club has raised money over recent months through a series of quizzes to buy a much-needed defibrillator. The device has been installed outside Peterborough town hall in Bridge Street. A defibrillator can help to save the life of someone who has suffered a cardiac arrest by emitting a high energy electric shock. Despite common misconception you don’t need to be trained to use a defibrillator - anyone can use it as there are instructions included inside the device. The defibrillator was officially unveiled by members of the Lions group to Peterborough Mayor Chris Ash earlier this week.
Lions club president Richard Willis said: “I have a long history of volunteering in First Aid related roles, having been in the St John Ambulance service for 33 years and a Community First Responder for five years after that, so I know how beneficial defibrillators can be and how vital it is to have them in public places. Councillor Chris Ash, Mayor of Peterborough, said: “It is vitally important that we have equipment like this readily available in the city centre, hopefully it won’t be needed, but it’s reassuring to have just in case.”

New Peterborough City Council Customer Service Centre now open Residents who need to meet with council staff face to face are now able to drop into the new Customer Service Centre. The new centre is in Bridge Street in the unit next door to the Lightbox cafe. It has replaced Bayard Place, which has now closed. It is a hub for members of the public looking for drop-in customer services including housing advice, customer services, the police and free self-serve computer access. Councillor David Seaton, cabinet member for resources, said: “The new Customer Services is conveniently located on Bridge Street, just footsteps away from the Town Hall, Job Centre Plus and the Cross Keys Homes Customer Central building. It will mean that all drop-in services for members of the public are in one place.
“As well as face to face conversations with council staff, residents will also be able to use new self-service portals to access services online.”
Our website at www.peterborough.gov.uk can now be used to do the following: Report issues, such as missed bin collections, pot holes or noise complaints Apply for school admissions, housing and council tax support Pay for services, like council tax, business rates and parking tickets Book meetings Ask the council a question
Grant funding for businesses Local small and medium businesses can access Grant Funding and Free Energy Efficiency reviews, thanks to ERDF funding. The Business Energy Efficiency programme can potentially provide grant funding up to a maximum of £20,000, or 25% of project costs, to eligible businesses for energy efficiency improvement measures such as LED lighting, heating, insulation and solar PV. The grant funding is limited. Businesses are urged to register interest by 30 June . www.beecp.org/sign-up T: 01733 882549 E: info@beecp.co.uk
Vivacity work with British Library to support entrepreneurs in Peterborough with new Business & IP Centre Entrepreneurs and small businesses in Cambridgeshire and Peterborough celebrate the kick-start of a new local service, designed to enable people to start, protect and grow their business. The new Centre in Peterborough will be a hub for entrepreneurs to come together to network, attend events and access a wealth of resources including business databases, market research reports, company data and information on patents, trademarks, designs and copyright. The Centre will harness the expertise of local public and private business experts, working with regional partners such as the Opportunity Peterborough, Chambers of Commerce and local business experts. The launch, taking place on Wednesday 13 February, marks the beginning of a programme of activities, workshops and events for anyone thinking of starting up a business. The programme will include live streams of inspiring talks from the British Library. In the past,
these have included speakers such as Julie Deane, the Business & IP Centre’s Entrepreneur in Residence and founder of the Cambridge Satchel Company, Mary Portas, ‘Queen of Shops’, and Lord (Karan) Bilimoria, founder of Cobra Beer. Housed within Peterborough Central Library the new Business & IP (intellectual property) Centre will be the 11th Centre modelled on the British Library’s successful Business & IP Centre, a walk-in service located in the heart of London offering free access to millions of pounds’ worth of business and intellectual property information and events, workshops and one-to-one expertise. Richard Hunt, Director of Culture for Vivacity said: “We are delighted to be bringing a Business and IP Centre to Peterborough. The building

Of these, 59% were women and 35% were from a black, asian and minority ethnic background, compared with 20% and 5% of business owners

Hereward Harmony is a male chorus that sing 4-part close harmony in a style called Barbershop.
Hereward Harmony Hereward Harmony formed over 30 years ago and meet once a week for an evening of singing. Their main aim is to reach a good standard of singing, but with the emphasis definitely on enjoying the experience. The group also performs in a variety of local venues and often raise funds for charity. Last year the chorus ran a hugely successful ‘Learn to Sing’ course that lasted for 6 weeks. Some 25 people attended, out of whom 15 decided to join the happy band, swelling membership to 35. During the last year they have been joined by another couple of new members. Hereward Harmony rehearses on Thursday evenings from 7.30 until 10pm at the Orton Wistow
Community Centre in Napier Place – PE2 6XN. The evening starts with some simple limbering up the body and vocal chords, before working on a selection of our repertoire under the direction of the superb young musical director. Half way through the evening the group breaks for refreshments, biscuits and a raffle, before working on more songs. “A warm welcome is extended to anyone who would like to come and see what we do; we can promise you a friendly reception and a good insight into Barbershop singing. We won’t try and make you sing if you don’t want to and we only start charging a very modest £12 a month after your first three months with us.”
On 11 May Hereward Harmony are staging a charity ‘Sing for Spring’ concert in aid of the Alzheimer’s Society. The event will be at held at The Fleet in Fletton, PE2 8DL, with doors and bar opening at 7.00pm. If you would like to come and see us and a selection of excellent performers, then ring Alan Lund on 07850 007057 to buy tickets at just £10 for adults and £7.50 for under 16s.

SING FOR LIFE 2019
40 Women Wanted! The days are beginning to get a bit longer, it’s time to do something new and exciting for 2019! Sing for Life could be just the ticket… Launching in May, Sing for Life will sign up 40 local women with a range of previous singing experience (including none) to rehearse over 10 weeks for a charity concert supporting Sue Ryder Thorpe Hall Hospice at the Cresset on Saturday 20th July. The project aims to make singing inclusive and accessible to all women regardless of age, social background or previous experience and over the years has introduced hundreds of local women to the joys of singing while raising many thousands of pounds for this much-loved local charity. There are as many reasons for getting involved in Sing for Life as there are women who take part: singing has a host of well-documented health and wellbeing benefits, there’s a fantastic social scene, and the chance to meet people you wouldn’t normally meet and discover music you wouldn’t usually experience. Plus of course there’s the charitable side of the project
and the opportunity to give something back to the community, as well as to challenge yourself and try something new! Sarah took part in the project last year and says “...You get such a buzz from singing in a group, and performing live on stage in front of friends and family was the highlight of the project for me!” Lisa, from Stamford says “as a cancer patient I thought to myself ‘I need to start doing things’ – and when I saw Sing for Life advertised, I thought I’d have a go! The whole experience has been just brilliant - both the singing, and meeting so many different people from all walks of life. After more than two years of treatment I can’t do enough to give back – Thorpe Hall does an absolutely amazing job for so many people!” Nilesh Patel, Community Fundraiser at Sue Ryder Thorpe Hall Hospice says “The support we receive from the Sing
for Life project is invaluable and we’re really delighted that, once again, they have chosen to support us in this way. It costs us £9,000 a day to provide care to people in our local community. That’s not just the nursing, it’s things like lovingly prepared meals, specialist medical care, family support and round the clock opening hours so friends and family can be there whenever they need to be.” “Sing for Life is not about finding the next Adele; it’s about helping ordinary women find their voice” says William Prideaux, the project’s director. “So many people lack confidence or genuinely believe they can’t sing, we promise – our very experienced music team will have you singing, and loving it, in no time!” This year, for the first time, the project has a corporate sponsor – Hunt & Coombs Solicitors. “We’re really thrilled to be able to support this exciting project” says Anna Spriggs,
Senior Partner “not only is it raising money for Sue Ryder Thorpe Hall Hospice, a very special local charity which is already close to our hearts - it is also giving women the opportunity to stretch themselves and take on a new challenge. A number of our staff are planning to take part in the project, and we can’t wait to get started!” Sing for Life launches with introduction sessions at the John Mansfield Campus on Thursday 9 May (5.30-9.30pm) and Saturday 11 May (2-4pm). No previous singing experience is necessary, just a willingness to step out of your comfort zone and give it a go! Whatever your starting point, over the 10-week project your singing will improve in leaps and bounds and while you might not end up winning the X Factor or perform at Covent Garden - that’s a huge confidence boost and very liberating!
For further information call 01733 425194 or email info@peterboroughsings.org.uk. Introduction sessions will be at the John Mansfield Campus, Peterborough PE1 4HX on Please call/email to register. The Sing for Life concert will be at Peterborough’s Cresset Theatre at 7.30pm on Saturday 20 July Sing for Life 2019 is sponsored by Hunt & Coombs Solicitors
Walk to Remember Walk to Remember loved ones and raise funds for Sue Ryder Thorpe Hall Hospice People are being encouraged to put their best foot forward and sign up for a special sponsored walk in Peterborough to celebrate the lives of loved ones. Walk to Remember, which will take place on Sunday 19 May, is being organised by a dedicated committee of volunteers to raise funds for Sue Ryder Thorpe Hall Hospice. Starting at The Boathouse pub, Thorpe Meadows, guests will take in the river and woodland on a scenic 6.5K sponsored walk. They will be able to wear a pin-on sign in memory of their loved one. If walkers want to
bring along their pooches, they are very welcome. The walk, which is being sponsored by Whittlesey’s The GSH Group, will end with a special celebration back at the pub, where there will be a reflection area with a memory tree to write dedications on, as well as Sue Ryder staff on hand to talk to if needed. This is the second year Walk to Remember has taken place; the 2018 event saw hundreds of walkers taking part and it raised over £10,000 for the hospice. Organisers are hoping to raise even more this year.
The cost is £10 for adults, £5 for children and £25 for a family. To sign up for Walk to Remember on Sunday 19 May, go to www.sueryder.org/walktoremember For more information, please contact Thorpe Hall’s fundraising team on 01733 225999 or email thorpe.fundraising@sueryder.org
Sunday 19 May
Sue Ryder Thorpe Hall Hospice offers its palliative care and support to patients and their families free of charge; however it needs to raise £2.4 million this year to provide it. Heading up the Walk to Remember committee of volunteers is Amy Goodacre, whose Mum Tracey was cared for at Thorpe Hall Hospice. “Last year’s walk was a really friendly, happy celebration and we hope everyone will be able to join us this year,” said Amy.
“It will be an opportunity to come together with family and friends and celebrate the lives of loved ones who are no longer with us.

Peterborough’s former Broadway Theatre is set to re-launch under the new management of Selladoor Worldwide (one of the UK’s leading touring theatre producers and no. 38 in The Stage 100s 2019 list of most influential people working in the performing arts industry).
Iconic Peterborough venue re-launches under new management The theatre will re-open its doors from September 2019 as the Peterborough New Theatre, and joins The Landmark Theatre, Ilfracombe and Queen’s Theatre, Barnstaple, under the operation of Selladoor Venues, alongside the Pavilion Theatre, Blackpool, in partnership with the Blackpool Entertainment Company. The New Theatre’s inaugural season will include two of Selladoor’s hit touring productions, Avenue Q and Madagascar The Musical, alongside Adam Spiegel Productions’ The Mousetrap and Prime Pantomimes’ The Wizard of Oz, with further productions to be
announced in due course. Peterborough philanthropist Peter Boizot spent £9m of his own money to recreate the beautiful 1930’s Art Deco building as a cornerstone of Peterborough cultural life. Following several attempts to breathe new life into the building in recent years, The Dawe Charitable Trust took over the lease of the building and has invested a further £1m to make The New Theatre central to the life of all Peterborough’s communities. Selladoor Worldwide’s production of Avenue Q was previously programmed to run at the venue in March 2019 before the
theatre was sadly forced to close. Selladoor is now delighted to be able to finally bring the show to the theatre, and will contact customers who had previously booked tickets for Avenue Q but were not given the opportunity to enjoy the show and did not receive a refund. Selladoor will offer to honour these tickets for the week of the show’s run from 24 – 28 September. As well as the main auditorium, Selladoor Worldwide will be rejuvenating the exceptional front of house spaces and bringing them back to life. They will be introducing delicious food offers, with friendly bar service and a welcoming place
to relax before the show, making the New Theatre a one-stop-venue for a great night out. The wonderful Broadway Suite will be reborn with speciality dining events, live music nights and fabulous opportunities for private hire. Keen to be an important centre for the city, and integrate with the community, the theatre will be welcoming local volunteers to be a part of the New Theatre family. There will be opportunities to assist with customer visits, special events and marketing, all enhancing the customer experience and giving the chance for those with a passion for the arts to get involved.

with Kasthuri Continuing with the decoupage theme from the previous issue ... There are so many different craft and home decor projects you can do with decoupage. The craft is simple, cheap and stunning at the same time. In this issue we will learn how to make a greeting card! Something which is used a lot by most of us… Hope you all enjoy making them… Things you need for the project A plain card (which is available in any shop/supermarket in the stationary section) Decoupage/ PVA glue Any napkin with a pattern (available in all supermarkets) A pair of scissors, fine sandpaper. A paintbrush A small piece of Greaseproof/ baking parchment paper House hold iron.
.
We first prepare the napkin, most napkins has three layers, remove the two layers from the bottom. Apply the glue on the plain card, allow it to dry for a few minutes. Position the selected and prepared napkin over the card. Place the Greaseproof paper over the napkin. Use a hot iron and press down on the paper for a minute, Remove the greaseproof paper from the top, you can see the napkin stuck to the card very well. Remove the excess napkin from the edge of the card either using a sharp scissor or a sandpaper.
Your card is ready to use for any occasion …
If you have further interest look out for my workshop on decoupage or send me a message on 07894636760 to arrange for a one to one secession. For more inspirations visit my face book page www.facebook.com/krafateria

Hiring a Tree Surgeon
By Ian Robbins
Tree surgeons plant, maintain and perform hazard assessments on trees. They prune or cut down trees where necessary. It can be a dangerous job, involving the use of power tools, a lot of climbing and working at height. Yet surprisingly anyone can call themselves a tree surgeon! Qualifications to look for The National Proficiency Tests Council (NPTC) is part of the City & Guilds group and is the governing body which issues certificates of competence for tree surgeons. As a minimum, any tree surgeon you hire should hold the following certificates: CS30 – Maintenance of the chainsaw, on site preparation and basic cross cutting CS31 – Fell and process small trees CS38 – Climb a tree and perform aerial rescue CS39 – Use of a chainsaw from a rope and harness First Aid at Work You should ask if the tree surgeon works to British Standards and see if he or she can name the relevant ones. The two main British standards for tree work are: British Standard 3998:2010 Tree work. Recommendations British Standard 5837:2012 Trees in relation to design, demolition and construction – Recommendations It’s also worth asking whether they have any other qualifications - like a relevant degree, additional NPTC certification, or whether they are a member of the Arboricultural Association (AA), the Tree Care Industry Association (TCIA) or the Royal Forestry Society.
The difference between an arborist and a tree surgeon is education. The International Society of Arboriculture has developed a certification program and testing that gives the individual the distinction of being called a Certified Arborist. The responsibility of being a Certified Arborist means maintaining the educational credits every year. These are highly skilled and qualified individuals who care about trees. Any contractor should provide you with a free quotation, in writing. This should break down exactly what’s included in the price. For example, does the final price for the job include the hire of any equipment, stump grinding, taxes, and the clearance and disposal of waste? They will also be able to demonstrate a thorough understanding of how the law applies to their job. Take a look at the equipment your chosen tree surgeon brings with him to the job - and how he uses it. In particular: Any worker should be wearing the right personal protective equipment. This should typically include a helmet with visor and ear protection, chainsaw boots and chainsaw trousers. Anyone working up in a tree should be wearing - and using - a harness and a rope. Follow our tips and any contractor you employ should do a tree-mendous job.

Girlguiding
the next generation Girlguiding is the leading charity for girls and young women. We’ve been around for over 100 years and a lot has changed during that time! We run out of school activities for girls aged 5 – 18 and all of our adult members are volunteers. People get involved with Girlguiding for a number of reasons. Many were Brownies or Guides as children and remember how much fun they had. Whatever their reasons all our volunteers are part of an innovative organisation which creates a safe, nurturing environment where girls and young women can work together to try new things and take on new challenges.
All Girlguiding units are staffed by trained volunteers and supported by a volunteer team at local, regional and national levels. Girlguiding volunteers are given training and support by an experienced local volunteer team on everything from First Aid to leadership skills. We have waiting lists in the some areas and unless we can open new units soon some girls will be too old for Rainbows or Brownies by the time a space becomes available for them. We are looking for volunteers
who can help us open new units and ensure that more girls have the opportunity to be part of Girlguiding. Volunteering with Girlguiding is flexible and fun. You don’t have to commit to a weekly session, every other week, monthly or holiday guiding are all options. If you’re not sure about working with the girls directly then maybe you can use your other skills to support a unit. This could be updating our online system to track girls achievements, posting updates on social media or

The Young Actors Company The Young Actors Company Peterborough has been very busy creating and rehearsing our latest and greatest production which is being staged at the Key Theatre on 24 and 25 May Simon Nader diS.TOPia is a verrrrrry dark comedy set within a young offenders institute in the not-too distant future; a riotous, knowingly anarchic piece of new writing investigating issues of care, control and the implications of individual choice in wider society. Written and directed by myself in collaboration with the cast, diS.TOPia is our most challenging piece of work to date and pushes the actors physically and mentally. Cast member Taila Bereznyckyj (14) commented: “The fact that young people in our company are writing
a show and sharing it with people is very cool. That’s what makes it so special and enjoyable to perform.” Part of my work at YAC is to help our students grow as people, as well as develop their acting talent and I’m sure that audiences will appreciate what the students have put into this production. We will be auditioning for new members soon and anyone between 12 and 18 is welcome. diS.TOPia bookings: Key Theatre on 01733 207239.

completing the accounts. If you’ve got management experience you might be interested in becoming a District or Division Commissioner supporting local volunteers and communicating updates from the county and region offices. Top Tips to help your child survive the exams … It’s that time of year again, the time of year that every parent dreads…..exam season! Whether your child is working towards A levels, GCSE exams, Year 6 SATs or 11+ exams, it is important to help your child prepare. Every year I help multiple students prepare for external exams in my tuition centre and I often get asked by parents how best to help their children survive exam season. So here are my top tips:

Make Learning Personal Busy classrooms tend to be dominated by the most confident students. Quiet or shy pupils can often be overlooked as they may be unwilling to ask for help resulting in a drop in confidence.
In home tuition One-to-one in-home tutoring gives your child exclusive attention to work through problems and ask questions in a relaxed and focused environment. Learning programmes are individually tailored to unlock each student’s full potential.
Tutor Doctor Tutor Doctor offers one-on-one home tutoring that works around you. We provide students with a personalised education tailored to suit their abilities, learning style and personality which we establish at a free inhome face-to-face consultation. Book your free consultation today.
Encourage your child to build a routine putting aside regular time slots in which to revise.Try and allocate time for each subject and check that they stick to it, otherwise they are likely to study for the subjects they enjoy and ignore those ‘tricky’ areas that they really should be studying but find difficult. Suggest revision methods that work. Research suggests that memory recall practice is an essential tool for effective revision. Help your child by asking them
short memory recall questions every day (facts that they have learnt the day or week before) or providing exam practice books that will provide this challenge. This method will also show up areas of weakness, and suggest topics to revise. Build plenty of fun, relaxation and family time into their daily routine. Make sure that they have time to chill every evening before they go to bed and are not revising right up until bedtime. A good night’s sleep and times for play and relaxation are essential for retaining information and thinking clearly. So, in summary, to ensure your child is ready for the exams, remember to make time for PREPARATION and RELAXATION.

Local couple Tony Green and Anne FoxleyGreen, are producing a series of children’s books about the adventures of a baby hedgehog that was deemed too small to survive. However, it’s a determined little chap and when he finds a new friend who wants to help him his chances of surviving are improved immeasurably.
19
The first Lickle Iggle book is now available, written by Tony and illustrated by his wife Anne: Lickle Iggle Says Hello.
Local author celebrates release of
‘Lickle Iggle Says Hello’
The story behind the book is just as fascinating as the story itself. Tony recounts the story: “In October 2016 we found a baby hedgehog in our driveway, in Hampton Vale, during the day... they’re nocturnal creatures and shouldn’t be out during the day at all so we had cause for concern. We took the little chap off to Upwood to a lady that rescues them but, as we found out later, he was too poorly to survive.” Anne continues:“It reminded me of the time, when I was four, when I found a baby hedgehog at the bottom of our garden - I was looking for fairies in the rhubarb patch at the time - and I decided that as it was lost I would give it a home! I went back into the house, found a cereal box, put it into the box and took it up to my bedroom.
You can imagine my mother’s horror when she put me to bed that evening and found the hedgehog tucked up in my bed! It was promptly returned to the bottom of the garden and never seen again!” Tony picks up the story again: “In December, we went for a short break to Stockholm where we found and bought a soft toy hedgehog that in Sweden are called igelkotts. Within an hour the story started to cascade into my head and after a short discussion, we decided that Lickle Iggle had just been born! The runt of the litter, rejected and deserted by his mother and brothers and sisters, he was left to fend for himself. He finds Little Annie who talks to him and, surprisingly, understands him when he snuffles and grunts and decides she wants

to look after him... much to the annoyance of her father who hates animals! The determination of Annie and her new friend is not to be underestimated and the fun and games with Lickle Iggle begin. Beautifully illustrated, the story takes the readers on a rollercoaster of emotion but will end with a smile on their faces as well as that of Lickle Iggle. The intention of the books - nine more stories are being worked on right now - is to raise awareness of the plight of hedgehogs in the UK, whose numbers are down by 90% over the last 50 years, and also to raise funds for the small charities and organisations that take in and care for them. There is plenty of information on the internet about hedgehogs and how to help these delightful little creatures, so please take some time to find out more.

Confidence is the key at
Kumon
At Kumon, the aim is to develop students into confident, independent learners. With 60 years of experience, the Kumon Maths and English Programmes enable children to take on new challenges with confidence Kumon believes that learning is for the long run. Children develop lifelong study skills and a passion for learning, as well as the confidence to tackle new challenges and face the unknown. This confidence is not just instilled in them whilst at Kumon, it is something they will keep with them for life. Students initially focus on building strong foundations in the way they study; developing important study skills such as concentration, pace and rhythm. Once they have built this foundation, they will then be able to confidently tackle topics they have not previously studied. Each student is given an individualised study programme that suits their needs and abilities. They start at their just-right level, and work through the programmes at their own pace. Through individualised study, the Kumon Maths and English Programmes pursue the potential of each child and develop confident, independent learners.
Kumon is the largest supplementary education provider in the UK and Ireland, offering daily, worksheet-based maths and English programmes. The Kumon Method of Learning was developed in 1954 by Toru Kumon - a parent and maths teacher from Japan. There are currently more than 74,000 Kumon students learning at 650 study centres across the UK and Ireland, with over 4 million students worldwide. At Kumon, our aim is for each child to become an independent, advanced learner, with a positive attitude to study.

“To need to use a children’s hospice is every parent’s worst nightmare, however, when you get there it’s the most beautiful place imaginable. It’s a lifeline to parents going through the worst possible journey and enables families to find the support that they need.”
Children’s Hospices charity urgently needs Peterborough volunteers A charity that runs a volunteer scheme to provide home support for families whose children have life-threatening conditions is appealing for help in Peterborough. Each Anglia’s Children’s Hospices (EACH) recently added EACH Help at Home to its service, an initiative that sees families linked with a caring individual who can provide practical support with everyday tasks such as cleaning, ironing, gardening and playing with children. One of the first families to benefit from EACH Help at Home were the Gandertons, from Peterborough. Hannah and Michael’s five-year-old daughter, Iona, has an encephalocele. A rare congenital type of neural tube defect, it means part of the brain grows outside the head. As a result, Iona suffers from hydrocephalus, a build-up of fluid on the brain, and epilepsy.
The care needs of Iona mean the family sometimes fall behind on simple, but essential chores such as cooking, laundry, paperwork and washing up. That situation greatly improved, though, after the family started receiving volunteer support. Hannah said: “Our volunteer was brilliant. She helped us with anything from laundry to cleaning, from a bit of cooking to playing with the children. She was lovely and we got on really well. I really looked forward to Monday mornings when she’d visit.” There is currently an urgent need for volunteers in the Peterborough area as families are waiting to receive that little bit of support that would make such a difference to their lives.
We’ve a number of families in the Peterborough area who’d really like help with cleaning, ironing, shopping and supporting children to do their homework. We know even a couple of hours of help a fortnight makes a huge difference to the families and lifts a little bit of weight off their shoulders. Unfortunately, though, we don’t have enough volunteers in Peterborough at the moment, so families are having to wait for this much-needed support.” Agnes Toth, Volunteer Co-ordinator
Anyone interested in supporting a family can find out more by getting in touch with Agnes on 07889 251385 or at agnes.toth@each.org.uk
Cherry Lodge rated as ‘good’ five times in a row A children’s home for young people with physical and learning disabilities has been judged as ‘good’ by Ofsted inspectors once again. Cherry Lodge, run by Peterborough City Council, has now been ranked as ‘good’ for five consecutive full Ofsted inspections. The home which is based in Orton Goldhay, Peterborough, offers dedicated support for up to eight children with complex needs. The latest inspection was carried out in January 2019. Inspectors judged that the experiences and progress, help and protection for young people, as well as the effectiveness of leadership and management for the home were 'good'.
The OFSTED report states: “The manager and staff work in partnership with families and professionals to meet each child’s individual complex needs." One parent told inspectors: "I think that it is a brilliant service. I was very nervous about her first overnight stay, but it was one of the best decisions that I have ever made. The staff are lovely, they understand her needs and care for her well.”
We are rightly proud of the care and support we offer children and young people in Peterborough. I am pleased Ofsted has recognised the important contribution Cherry Lodge makes to both children and their carers.” Councillor Sam Smith, Peterborough City Council’s cabinet member for children’s services

organise an
EASTER EGG HUNT Easter egg hunts are great fun, but it can be hard to come up with original ideas. Depending on the ages of the children the hunt can be easy or fiendishly difficult By Sarah Davey
Bunny Bounce Challenge
Easter Bonnet Competition
Set up different activity posts around the garden or park. At each one, the kids need to complete a physical challenge in order to receive an egg. The challenges could include star jumps, hopping, hula-hooping, or doing a silly dance.
Challenge the kids to create their own Easter bonnets from craft materials and old hats (Charity shops are great for cheap hats). You can give chocolate egg prizes for the most creative, the prettiest, the funniest etc
Easter Rhyme Challenge
The Scrambled Egg Hunt
If you’re good at rhymes, create a set of rhyming clues that take the children from one hiding place to another until they find the eggs.
This is a great Easter egg hunt idea for older kids. At each station leave cards with single letters written on them, or a set of plastic toy letters. The challenge is to rearrange the letters to spell the word of the next place to find a clue, for example ‘bath’ or ‘shed’ or ‘stairs’. At the final station they get to collect their eggs.
Pirate Bunny Treasure Hunt Create a treasure map which the children have to follow to discover where the chocolate eggs are hidden. Perhaps a paw print or an Easter Egg could mark the spot instead of an X
Easter Craft Challenge Set up different craft activities around the house or garden. For each cute Easter craft your child completes, they win a little chocolate egg.
Colour-Coded Easter Egg Hunt Use a pack of eggs in different colours. Give each child a colour. They can only collect eggs which match that colour.
Bunny Vouchers Easter Egg Hunt Some children can’t have chocolate due to a medical condition, so instead of chocolate treats, pop little slips of paper inside plastic eggs. Each slip should have a little treat written on it for your child to claim over the next week or so; things like ‘ go trampolining with my dad’, or ‘fly a kite with mummy.
Egg Decoder Hunt Take apart colourful hollow plastic eggs and put them back together with mismatched colours. The children must work in teams to find the eggs hidden around the garden, take them apart and put them back together with the matching colour. The team with the most colourmatched eggs wins the big prize.
Happy hunting!

From Peterborough
with love
It’s been a little while since that article came out about Peterborough being voted the worst town in the UK, and honestly we’re still reeling. Of course, in true Your Scene style, we’ve got to have our say. Peterborough is a vibrant bustling city and there are so many reasons why Peterborough is certainly not the worst city ... and in our opinion, is one of the best
Standing proud in the centre of our city is Peterborough Cathedral, known for its imposing early English Gothic west front (façade) which, with its three enormous arches, is without architectural precedent and with no direct successor. The appearance is slightly asymmetrical, as one of the two towers that rise from behind the façade was never completed (the tower on the right as one faces the building), but this is only visible from a distance. Located in the city centre, it’s a tourist hot spot due to its rich history. Recently celebrating the cathedral’s 900th birthday, it hosts a number of events throughout the year, including the recent Tim Peake’s exhibition. It’s also home to the final resting place of Catherine of Aragon, Henry VIII’s first wife. Visiting inside is a must, however the cathedral gardens and extended grounds are beautiful to sit and relax in. To the east of the city is the bronze age archaeological site at Flag Fen which dates back a whopping 3500 years! Here, you have the unique opportunity to explore how the prehistoric people of the fens lived in the only place in the UK where original Bronze Age remains
can be seen in situ. View the incredibly preserved timbers of a monumental engineering achievement and wander through a Bronze Age village, sit within the reconstructed roundhouses, and stand where our ancestors once stood by the ritual causeway. You can also relax and enjoy the scents and colours of the plants used in the reconstructed Roman Herb Garden and Lakeside Walk and you can even see some Soay sheep. Today, Peterborough is a thriving city with independent bars, restaurants and businesses. A stroll through the city centre shows a number of places to catch up with friends, and enjoy a cocktail or two. Outside of the city centre there is an ice rink, our updated cinema and family favourites Sacrewell Farm and F erry Meadows. Peterborough is showcasing a number of festivals including: TruckFest, Peterborough’s CAMRA Beer Fest, The Gin & Rum Festival, Cheese Fest UK, Peterborough Heritage Festival and Peterborough Pride returns again this year. We asked our readers what they thought about the claims of Peterborough being the ‘worst city’ and
by Rosie Boon
you replied in your droves, with 176 positive responses about our great city! Casey Kamau said: “We have just had the most lovely half-term, enjoying time at Peterborough gymnastics open classes, lovely cafés and local parks, creating our own memories. Sometimes if you look a little closer it’s not all so bad.” Another reader, Hannah O’Neill said: “We moved back to Peterborough, as we prefer it so much better here. I loved growing up in P’boro and we’ve just bought a house here purely because we realised how much was actually here!” The majority of our readers commented on the sense of community, our neighbours and the people they’ve met in the city. All of those being some of the best reasons to live here. A city isn’t just the buildings, it’s the people who make the place. In my opinion, the number of positives for this vibrant, multicultural city far outweigh the negatives. Sure, we can all moan about congestion on the parkway or pigeons on Town Square, yet little annoyances shouldn’t detract from our city’s positive values and contributions. Peterborough is home, and cliché as it may sound ... home is where the heart is.

Lesley Smith is Curator of Tutbury Castle in Staffordshire, where Mary Queen of Scots was held prisoner on four occasions. She has appeared in over 120 TV programmes and is well known for her entertaining and compelling costumed monologues. Tickets are £10 per person (no children under 16). People are invited to bring along any jewellery and antiques which have been unworn or unloved for years, which they would like to transform into treasure for the Cathedral and, if they wish, a parish church of their choice in the Peterborough Diocese. Hansons will sell the items via one of their Specialist Auctions, with the Cathedral and the chosen churches each receiving half of the total proceeds. You can also come along and meet Charles for valuation advice on other items, and make a donation for this service. Lesley Smith, in character as Elizabeth I, will be present to chat to visitors of all ages and be available for photos. More details of how to get involved will be coming soon. 2 & 3 May Monotony in the UK - an interactive digital performance University Centre Peterborough students in the final year of the BA (Hons) Performing Arts degree will be performing ‘Monotony in the UK’ at The Key Theatre in Peterborough on Thursday 2 and Friday 3 May 2019. ‘Monotony in the UK’ is an original interactive digital performance devised by Level 6 BA (Hons) Performing Arts students from University Centre Peterborough (UCP). Set in an abstract dystopian UK, any and all distinctions between reality, memory and the virtual have long been abandoned. “This is going to be a performance. It is going to be the year 2222… or something dystopian like that. The UK is going to be the same, but different: still nostalgic, still miserable, still proud, still lost, still patriotic, still torn, still desperate to know, still not listening. You are going to be the audience. An audience. You are going to witness a medical trial, or perhaps a presentation at a new technology conference, or perhaps an experiment in a military
torture bunker, or perhaps… Or perhaps you are something else altogether. A deity. An abstract yet all-seeing voyeur. A democratic God. You will design the perpetual existence of the characters and you will construct our collective experience.” Gabe Manthorp, course leader for the BA (Hons) Performing Arts degree at University Centre Peterborough said “University Centre Peterborough are proud to be developing our relationship with The Key Theatre even further this year by fully embedding our 3rd year devised show within their public Summer Season of events. This shows a level of trust in the quality of our work which we have worked hard to achieve, and is a credit to our talented students. These students have spent the last few weeks on professional placements in a range of exciting roles with Eastern Angles, Metal and 20 Twenty Productions (to name just a few). Monotony in the UK promises to be an innovative and socially aware piece at the forefront of
contemporary performing arts practice. Come and support these emergent artists as they make their bold first mark upon the professional industry.” On the opening night (Thursday 2 May) at 6pm, guests can also attend an additional performance entitled ‘An Intervention’ with UCP alumni Jack Hudson and Tom Farrell. ‘An Intervention’ was written by Mike Bartlett, writer of the hit TV series Doctor Foster. It examines the relationship between two friends who realise that they probably shouldn’t be friends – a realisation that has a profound implication for both their futures. This is an edited version of the production that was first produced in 2018 by Westacre Theatre Company, directed by UCP lecturer David Connor. ‘An Intervention’ is free to attend when booked at the same time as ‘Monotony in the UK’. This is also available from The Key Theatre box office on 01733 207239 or (www.vivacity.org/whatson/ theatre-and-arts/an-intervention )
University Centre Peterborough offer an established BA (Hons) Performing Arts degree in which students use the facilities at The Key Theatre and the Park Crescent campus at University Centre Peterborough. Students will regularly engage with local, national and international industry through our team of research/industry-active expert staff providing opportunities for our undergraduate students to gain industry experience during their studies.
There are two performances at The Key Theatre, Peterborough, which will take place on Thursday 2nd May and Friday 3rd May from 7.30pm and are open for students and members of the public to book. Tickets are £12.50 for adults or £8 for concessions and available from The Key Theatre box office on 01733 207239 or www.vivacity. org/whatson/theatre-and-arts/ monotony-in-the-uk
5 & 6 May Truckfest First celebrity guest announced for Truckfest Peterborough! Harry Redknapp is one of the most famous football speakers and managers and now the King of the Jungle after winning I’m a Celebrity… Get Me Out of Here 2018! Retiring in the late 1970’s Redknapp went on to manage both West Ham and Bournemouth as well as a period spent at Southampton and two terms at Portsmouth; his dedication to British football has only increased over the years and, in his capacity as an after dinner speaker, Redknapp highlights the importance of home-grown talent and the potential of the British
youth; and with a son, a grandson and a nephew all proud English footballers (Jamie Redknapp, who played for Liverpool for 11 years, Harry Redknapp Jr who signed for AFC Bournemouth in 2014 and Frank Lampard Jr, of Chelsea fame) Redknapp’s talents and ambition clearly run in the family. Alongside his work as a football speaker and Premier League manager, Redknapp has held dreams of managing the England international team, but was pit to the post by Roy Hodgson in 2012 amidst erroneous allegations of corruption and fraud. His ability to remain a dedicated and competent manager throughout the various trials and tribulations of his public
image only further attests to his determination and ambition. As a football speaker Redknapp is passionate and enthusiastic, his vast experience as both a player and sports speaker have provided him with an in-depth knowledge of football, tactics ;and teamwork, all of which compliment his work as a manager. His insight into life both on and off the pitch is incredibly enlightening, whilst, thanks to the peaks and troughs of his long standing career, Harry Redknapp speaks openly about adversity, determination and ambition as a man who has faced and experienced both.
Harry Redknapp will be meeting and greeting fans on Monday 6 May at Truckfest Peterborough! Get tickets now at www.truckfest.co.uk

TRAVEL&LEISURE

A European city break is the perfect way to have a weekend seeing some fantastic sights yet concerns over the effects of Brexit and rising prices have put many people off booking for Europe this year. However, you may just need to look a little further at some of the fantastic city breaks that are available further out of Europe. There’s always so much to see and do in New York – it is, after all, the city that never sleeps. You can get tickets to the latest Broadway show or you could just head to Ellen’s Stardust Diner where the staff – mostly Broadway hopefuls – sing while they bring you food and drinks. Central Park is beautiful in every season and obviously the shopping here is fantastic. How about visiting the Moroccan city of Marrakech? Here you could find yourself haggling at a traditional souk in the old town of Medina. The main market square, Jemaa el-Fnaa, is vibrant and alive at all times of the day. Day trips to the fortified city and UNESCO
World Heritage site of Aït Benhaddou are also incredibly popular. When evening rolls around, restore yourself on the delightfully spice-infused cuisine, and belly-dance the night away. Alternatively, you could just stay in the UK and feel like you’ve been away by flying or taking a ferry to Belfast. The Botanic Gardens in Queens Quarter are perfect for a relaxing stroll and were an important part of the city’s Victorian heritage, as it was a popular meeting place for the aristocracy. Belfast is also home to Belfast Cathedral, The Albert Clock and the Titanic Visitor Experience. You could also go on a day trip to see the stunning Giant’s Causeway.

Cancer free mum promotes healthier lifestyle After losing almost 8 stone with Slimming World, local mum-of-four and grandmother of three is looking to help others cut their weight and turn to a healthy lifestyle following her own battle with cancer Sammie Todd, 52, of South Bretton, Peterborough joined her local Slimming World group in Bretton and within a year, dropped from a size 24 to a size 10 with a jaw-dropping loss of 7st 9.5lbs. After seeing the difference that it has made to both her and her family’s life, she wants to help others to do the same. She said: “I was overweight all of my adult life and it really made me miss out on activities with my children and grandchildren. It wasn’t until I had Cancer and I was going through to my life-saving operation that I realised I really needed to make a change to my life to help prevent myself from Diabetes and other weight-related illnesses. “I’ll never forget that my eldest grandchild said ‘Please never leave me Nan’ and I made a promise to him that I wouldn’t. So, true to my word, I made some lifestyle changes and to this day, I’ve been doing things that I never did before, thanks to Slimming World.” Since losing her weight, Sammie has a new-found energy to do things in life, including
enjoying a daily 3km walk, joining her kids on rollercoasters and even cooking all of her family meals from fresh. Sammie also made it to the final 10 throughout the UK and Ireland, in Slimming World’s national competition, Woman of The Year last October. “Slimming World has really given me a completely new life. It’s funny, as a grandmother, I’d have thought that I would have known how to cook, but Slimming World has taught me a whole new way of cooking, and one that is actually easier and healthier than before. I even have burgers and chips! “I can still enjoy everything that I loved before, I still have my chocolate and my treats, but it’s really taught me how to eat in moderation. Before I’d eat a whole big chocolate bar, now, I couldn’t even dream of eating a whole bar in one sitting, it’s really changed my relationship with food. “What I really love about Slimming World is that it has always been in my control. I’ve always decided what my target has been, there’s never
any pressure to feel a certain way and I’m always supported by the brilliant family that is my group.” Sammie has felt every high and low on her journey, and because of her emotional eating, has hit bumps in the road, and successfully gotten over them, which she thinks will help her to help others on their journey. “It’s all about the support that you have alongside you. I’ve laughed with my group and I’ve cried with my group, and they’ve really been my rock. I know how important it is to stay to group and to have that support,” she said. Most of all, I know just how important these lifestyle changes can be to someone and how overcoming the bumps in the road can seem so difficult to you, but I’m just really looking forward to helping people achieve their shining confidence.”
Sammie‘s new Slimming World group will be held on Monday’s at 9:30am at St Andrew’s United Reformed Church in Netherton starting on Monday, April 22. For more details, call Sammie on 07494872585 or email sammiesw@sammietodd.com

CBD oil: What is it, what are the benefits ? CBD Oil has risen in popularity in the last year with its increased availability across the UK. But what is it, what are the benefits and how do you find a high quality product? What is CBD oil? Cannabidiol (CBD) is one of the 80 plus active cannabinoids naturally found in the hemp plant. The oil is extracted from the plant and mixed with other plant oils. Ideally, your CBD oil would be full spectrum which means that it contains trace amounts of other minor cannabinoids - this has been shown to have a more beneficial effect.
What are the benefits of CBD? Although CBD is a food supplement, not a medicine, some studies claim that it can have the following properties: Analgesic, antioxidant, anti-bacterial, sedative, antidepressent, antipsychotic, anxiolytic and anti-convulsive.
How can you take CBD? There’s a fast-growing CBD product range but the most simple way to get your CBD is to take a take a few drops of oil under your tongue.
Is CBD legal? CBD is completely legal but make sure you buy a brand where lab reports are visible and they are members of the Cannabis Trades Association UK. Hapi Hemp adhere to both.
The official UK guidelines is that no more than 0.2% of THC can be contained per bottle and most reputable brands will comply with this.
How do I know it’s safe? Make sure you buy from a reputable retailer, ask for lab reports, check and see if they are members of the CTA and find out where the product is originally from. So much comes in from China where they have no certifications and products are tested on animals. All Hapi hemp products are certified and we can provide lab reports, we are also members of the CTA.
Hapi Hemp was born in 2018 from a vision and personal experiences from two women and is built around quality, passion, experience, trust & safety. Hapi Hemp is registered with the Cannabis Trade Association (CTA). The CTA are the only centric trade association for the UK that works with all sectors of the hemp and cannabis industry to promote good practice, provide practical advice and ensure consumers have access to top quality information regarding legal hemp products. The CTA works to ensure
that common sense prevails and sellers provide products that are legitimate - “sellers say what they are and are what they say” therefore giving you peace of mind when buying from us and most importantly adhering to rules regarding legal labelling and lab reports. Hemp is fast becoming a popular therapeutic product and with this comes many dubious sellers. When purchasing products such as these it is vital that you know you are buying an ethical item. So many countries overseas still test on animals, something that goes against the whole Hapi Hemp ethos, so please be careful when deciding on what items to choose. If its cheap – ask yourself why? Not all CBD products are equal… Hapi Hemp is all about providing high quality hemp products that have been produced by companies that we know and trust. Everything that we sell has been thoroughly tested by us! Our promise to you is we would NEVER sell you anything that we haven’t tested or that we do not believe in. We hope to gain trust and recognition from our customers through reliability, quality and service.

staff take time to get to know them and their family and gain an understanding of their history, likes and dislikes and personal preferences, which enables the provision of truly individual care in a way that is meaningful for each resident. There is a lively program of activities which residents can join in with if they wish - from gardening, crafts and light exercise to day trips out - there is always something for everyone to enjoy.
For more information on any aspects of the home, please contact Rabea Azad on 07834 790 400 or email rabea.azad@countrycourtcare.com

Our aim is to help prevent falls and falls related injuries across the city. The service is suitable for any individual 65+ who has had a fall in the last year, feels unsteady or perhaps would just like to become more active We offer Multi Factorial Falls Risk Assessments which address common falls risk factors. A falls action plan will then be put in place to deal with any issues identified in the assessment. We can refer clients onto local services such as Occupational Therapy, Physiotherapy and Podiatry Services if required. If you have had a fall or have felt increasingly unsteady in the last year you would benefit from having an assessment. We also offer personalised home-based strength and balance exercise programmes. Pedal-crazy Peterborough June & Vernon Bull – local historians and authors
The cycleway system in Peterborough won national and international acclaim in 1992 because it offered speedy and safe travel for those fit enough to leave the car at home. In fact, our city was singled out as one of the top ten in the country when it came to looking after cyclists. In the early 1990s a national survey was designed which covered over 20 topics including special facilities, catering for leisure cycling, cycle parking, and cycle pathways etc and the result was that Peterborough proved to be top of the pile while places like Liverpool were dubbed disaster city’s for cyclists. In 1977 the first experimental cycle route in the city was launched as part of the new town development that linked the city centre with Westwood and Bretton. Following that success, a whole web of cycle routes followed covering a total of 90 miles. At this time the routes were considered so good that nearly 1 in 6 people travelled to work by bike each day which was above the national average. Thus, cycleways were deemed an integral part of the master plan of all the new townships which were modelled around two-wheeled enthusiasts as the parkway system catered for motorised transport. However, it was not all plain sailing, as when planners decided to put cycleways through the middle of the city centre traders became very
concerned about loss of trade. Traffic lights were put in place to give cyclists the right of way over motorists and when Bridge Street was pedestrianised cyclist created havoc among people thinking they were safe walking along with their children or the elderly thinking they had the right of way at a steady pace. Sadly, when Bretton centre was ready for opening, some cyclists used it as a ‘race track’, and the introduction of underpasses meant both cyclists and pedestrians became very concerned as these underpasses became ideal gathering places for groups of youths. Additionally, developers who introduced ‘cycle only’ paths on the side of the roads had not predicted that motorists would tend to ignore the cyclists and ultimately people got injured. Indeed, when Queensgate was opened in 1982, cyclists found they had nowhere to park their bikes, so not all the plans to extend and improve the city’s cycleways and facilities had been thoroughly thought through by the City Council Planning Department or Peterborough Development Corporation. Eventually, the authorities did succeed in signposting the
safest cycle routes through the city centre and between the new townships. In 1992 Brian Mawhinney (one of the city’s two MPs) said: he was delighted with the city’s recognition of being one of the top 10 rated for looking after cyclists. Indeed, he went further by stating that the city maintains the cycleways to the highest standards because it is essential that the use of cycles is encouraged – especially when people are concerned about the environment. This stance has not diminished over time. Indeed, cycling has a long and proud history in Peterborough - not only was the bicycle used for getting to work but also for leisure and sport. The Peterborough Bicycle Club was formed in 1874 although evidence has come to light that it could have been formed in the previous year. The aim was to ‘unite bicyclists in the city and neighbourhood, to set up races, to provide prizes and arrange excursions’. The club colours were blue and gold but not on Sundays! Founding members of the Peterborough Bicycle Club were G L Julyan, J T Miller, C Foote, A M Pentney, W H Pentney and J Mullet.

Aragon Promotion
Aragon Direct Services to take over bin collections and more Keeping our streets clean, bins collected and grass cut are important services for residents, so you should note that a new trading company owned by the council is taking over these services from the current contractor Amey. Aragon Direct Services will start delivering these key services over the next couple of months: ďƒˆ1 April 2019 - waste collection ďƒˆ 4 May 2019 - grounds maintenance, street cleansing, building maintenance services and home to school transport routes For Peterborough residents, who rely on the council to empty their bins, sweep their streets, maintain parks and recreational spaces and provide school transport, there will be little obvious change other than the name. Bin collection schedules and services will remain the same and will continue to be delivered by the same team of frontline staff within the new trading company, Aragon Direct Services.
So you may be asking why the council has launched this new trading company and not just deliver the services back in-house. There are two main reasons for this. The first being that council has constraints on how it can raise and retain income from commercial operations. By creating a private limited trading company it has more freedom to trade with commercial businesses. The fact that the company is wholly owned means the Council can retain level of control of the company and benefit financially, helping offset the financial pressures that all local authorities are currently under. Therefore businesses and residents buying additional services from Aragon
Direct Services are directly helping to invest in the city, protect front-line services and create more local jobs. The second reason is it will give the council greater control in how the services are delivered and can be more flexible in their approach, for example, where priorities change and we want to amend schedules for a service such as grass cutting this can be arranged more easily than if through an outsourced contract. Aragon Direct Services is the trading name of Peterborough City Council’s registered Local Authority Trading Company, Peterborough Limited. As such, its fully accountable to the council and its elected representatives.
Residents and businesses will continue to contact the council to discuss these services. The best way to report issues is to visit www.peterborough.gov.uk/report, email ask@peterborough.gov.uk or call 01733 747474.

The new face of divorce If you sadly reach the conclusion that your marriage is irretrievably broken down, unlike what happens in many jurisdictions around the world, you can’t just make a mutual decision to start divorce proceedings. In this country you still have to apportion blame or wait for a minimum of two years from separation. Even then you need the consent of the other spouse without which you have to wait five years. No fault divorce was first introduced by the Family Law Act 1996 but was later considered unworkable and repealed. There has been a movement for reform ever since and demands for change mounted after the Tini Owens case last year. Mrs Owens had filed for divorce on the grounds of her husband’s unreasonable behaviour but she failed right up to the Supreme Court to provide sufficient evidence of that behaviour being unreasonable enough and the divorce was thrown out. She has had to wait for the expiry of the full five years. Mrs Owen’s situation was highly unusual and it is very rare for divorce proceedings to be contested. Nonetheless it is not a good start to ending the marriage when you have to raise allegations of unpalatable behaviour which often sets the tone for the rest of the case.
The new law is likely to require that just one of the spouses gives notice that the marriage has broken down and the separation period is reduced to nine months. The Government is committed to reforming divorce law in the next parliamentary session, which starts in May. Whether the recent turmoil over Brexit will derail this timetable is another matter. But the push for reform is now very strong. The other major divorce reform introduced recently is modernising the process, namely the ability to apply online for the issue of a divorce petition. These are already coming through the system but in the early stages. Currently you still need to satisfy the grounds for divorce or it will be rejected at decree nisi stage. You must also be careful that you fill in the sections about applying for costs and most importantly, applying for financial orders. If you have any queries or doubts about the process, contact a family law specialist..

Scheme against scammers seeks to stamp out postal fraud A new crackdown on scammers has been launched across Cambridgeshire and Peterborough with the aim of making the county scam-free –and Safe Local Trades is delighted to be supporting it! The Cambridgeshire and Peterborough Against Scams Partnership (CAPASP) includes Cambridgeshire Constabulary, Police and Crime Commissioner Jason Ablewhite, Cambridgeshire County Council and Peterborough City Council. CAPASP is committed to working towards stamping out scams; from postal to online fraud, to telephone scams and doorstep rogue traders. Over the next few months, we will be looking in more detail at these scams and the warning signs which could prevent you from parting with your hard earned cash. So, postal scams … what are they are how can we spot the signals? An official looking letter drops through the door – you open it and to your delight and amazement you have won a substantial amount of cash in a prize draw, or have been left a large sum in a Will. The letter instructs you to share your personal and bank details so that the money can be paid directly into your account. What do you do? That glossy catalogue landing on the doormat is selling ‘miracle’ diet supplements, and that oh so accurate letter from the experienced clairvoyant has got your first personal reading spot on, but you need to pay for a follow up. What do you do? All these seem too good to be true – free money, a better future and a new, improved you! That’s because they are; in fact these are some of the clever postal scams currently causing misery to people locally and further afield. The correspondence will look ‘official’ – cleverly designed to fool the recipient; often with lots of attention to detail. If you aren’t expecting to receive postal notification of the nature, some tell-tale signs are:
• Requests are made for money first before getting prize • Use of the customer’s first name to make the letter look personal • The letter is written to put people under pressure to reply • PO Boxes are used instead of full postal address • Too good to be true offers • They are created to look dazzling • A director’s name, picture and signature is used to make it look official • Stamps are used to make it look official • Fake testimonials or money back guarantees are often used to make offer seem genuine • The letter often asks the recipient to keep their winnings a secret
ADVICE 1. Don’t reply to unsolicited mail e.g. lotteries and prize draw letters – instead, either return to sender, or send it to the Royal Mail at FREEPOST SCAM MAIL 2. Do sign up for FREE to the Mailing Preference Service (MPS) at www. mpsonline.org.uk or on call 0845 703 4599; this will help stop sales & marketing mail from within the UK
If you think you or a loved one may have been the victim of a scam, report it to Action Fraud. To find out how you can sign up for the fight against fraud, and read some tips on spotting a scam, visit www.friendsagainstscams.org.uk In addition, Safe Local Trades has its own advice on tell tales signs of a lottery, prize draw or sweepstake scam. Do you know how much state pension you will receive when you retire? You can find this figure through your online personal tax account (PTA) or sign up for one at https://www.gov. uk/personal-tax-account and click on ‘view state pension forecast’. People who reach state retirement age after 5 April 2016 need 35 full years of national insurance contributions (NIC) to qualify for the full state pension. Your personal tax account also shows any gaps in your NIC record. An incomplete NIC year will be recorded for periods in which you were contracted out of the state pension. If you are still under state pension age (which is gradually increasing to 68)
you can continue to pay NIC or collect NIC credits to boost the amount of your state pension. Self-employed individuals need to pay class 2 NIC of £153.40 for 2018-19 to achieve a full NIC year. If you are employed you can accrue a full year of NIC for free by earning between £6,032 and £8,424 for 2018-19. If you are neither employed nor self-employed you can pay class 3 NIC on a voluntary basis at £14.65 per week. Class 3 NIC can also be used to fill gaps in your NIC record for the last six years. Please note that these rates were increased for the current 2019-2020 tax year.
If you have any tax or business questions, please email Pete Bird of Bird & Co info@birdandco.ltd and if of general interest, we will publish them here.

5 top tips for
training dogs Britain is a bona fide nation of animal lovers, and dogs are one of our favourite pets. It’s just a shame that so many people have such difficulty keeping their furry friends under control Shocking stories about dogs gone wild aside, it’s safe to say that the vast number of owners do struggle to keep their best friend in check at all times. Nevertheless, a poorly trained dog is no good, and can easily become something of an embarrassment. So, follow these simple rules and you won’t go too far wrong ...
Understand your breed
Show them what it means to be a good leader
Allow time for mental exercises, every day
Dogs are highly perceptive and have a pack mentality. Set an example for how you want the animal to behave, in order for them to learn and replicate that.
Here’s where you can make a dog appreciate rules, boundaries and restrictions board the instructions you’re giving them.
Partly thanks to man’s penchant for and understanding of a dog’s ability to work, each breed has a host of different personality traits and attributes. It’s vital that you understand these in order to successfully train and balance your pet.
Walks must involve discipline
Assign your dog a task before it gets a treat
Particularly important with puppies. In order to ensure your hound doesn’t wind up wrecking the house when nobody is watching, start the day with a disciplined walk, enough to let them work off some energy without returning over-excited.
It’s no good rewarding the animal for doing nothing if you want to perfect training. By giving it something to do before offering a tasty snack, drink or toy, man’s best friend begins to understand that enjoyable things don’t come for free.
