Could you be Queensgate’s next Charity Partner? Queensgate Shopping Centre is looking for a new Charity Partner which it will support over the coming year. Local charities are being invited to apply by submitting a short video demonstrating why they would like to partner with Queensgate. The shopping centre has supported local charities for many years, helping them to raise thousands of pounds for vital causes. Charities that have benefited to date include Little Miracles and Anna’s Hope. The chosen Charity Partner – formerly known as ‘Charity of the Year’ – will benefit from free use of Queensgate’s high-footfall, commercial space to help raise awareness of, and funds for, their causes and campaigns. They will also be able to take advantage of Queensgate’s own professional marketing, social media and public relations support. Plus, there is potential for the shopping centre team
to donate volunteering hours to support the charity with its work. Mark Broadhead, Centre Director at Queensgate Shopping Centre, said: “This really is an excellent opportunity for a local charity to benefit from our support. We are fully committed to supporting charitable causes, and we are looking for the next Charity Partner to benefit from this goodwill. We look forward to receiving your videos and finding out why your charity deserves a helping hand from Queensgate.” The centre’s next Charity Partner must be able to commit to providing people cover for
the seasonal gift-wrapping service, which is traditionally one of the most enjoyable and financially beneficial events each year for Queensgate’s charity partners. The giftwrapping service runs for around four weeks from the end of November, and includes late nights and weekends. To apply, just record a two-minute video application to Queensgate, describing what your charity does and why you want to partner with Queensgate – the more fun, creativity and energy you can put into it, the better! Send it to management@queensgatecm.co.uk by 31 July to be in with a chance of being selected.
For more information about Queensgate Shopping Centre, head to www.queensgate-shopping.co.uk
Nominations now open for Peterborough Civic Awards If you know an individual who always goes above and beyond or a group that helps out in the community, then why not put their name forward for a Civic Award? The awards are the communities way of saying thank you to all those who go out of their way to help others. Last year’s winners included Fiona Henry, Bernadette Gibbons and Kirsty Hadfield from the Needless Needles campaign and Steven Pettican for his work with the Light Project, Peterborough. Councillor Peter Hiller, chairman of the council’s Honours Panel, said: “The Civic Awards are a once-a-year opportunity to recognise and reward Peterborough people who go the extra mile for others, often giving their time for free and making a difference to the lives of some of our most vulnerable residents.
Stanground Sue Ryder Charity Shop and Café Come and visit the Stanground Sue Ryder Café and see a great range of donated furniture too

The winners of the Civic Awards will be announced at the council meeting in December, followed by a presentation ceremony in the new year at the Town Hall.
There is a wide range of furniture and homeware, and next door is the boutique charity shop with a large variety of clothes for everyone. In a great location, it’s only two miles from Peterborough city centre, and with free parking, it’s a perfect spot for some shopping and lunch and all raising money toward a great cause. TIPS
for choosing a Professional Carpet Cleaner By Karen Campbell Cheap is rarely best - However attractive saving a few quid might seem, the least expensive option might actually do more harm than good. Companies that offer heavily discounted rates may use substandard cleaning products that could permanently damage your carpets. Price is important but it should not be number one on your list of questions to ask. Know the Process - Cleaning services are all different so ask questions. How does each company that go about their business? Some companies might use stronger detergents, while others might use more environmentally
friendly options. How long will the drying time be? Knowing the exact process each company employs will help you to decide who to hire. Do your research - Talk to friends and family. Check review sites and ask for recommendations on social media. The best services are found through word of mouth, so do the research and leverage your network for trustworthy recommendations. Ask About Additional Services – You don’t want hidden surprises so make sure you know whether there will be extra services? And how
much the company will charge for them? Will they move furniture if they need to? How will they manage difficult-to reach areas? Are they insured and registered with Are environmentally friendly products more expensive? Keep it Local if Possible - A local carpet cleaning company will have a vested interest in keeping you happy. Local companies provide services for other local residents too, so it is in their best interest to offer a high-quality service at affordable costs to ensure customer retention.

Guide Dogs encourages residents to volunteer for My Guide service National charity Guide Dogs is calling on the people of Peterborough to sign up to its My Guide service My Guide is a guiding service that matches trained sighted volunteers to people with sight loss who need support getting out and about. Guide Dogs currently helps more than 1,000 people with sight loss through My Guide, but more volunteers are urgently needed. Each partnership is focused on achieving a set goal – from building confidence, increasing physical fitness, working towards a guide dog partnership, tackling social isolation or supporting hobbies or pastimes. My Volunteers spend on average around two or more hours a week supporting a My Guide partnership. The timings can be flexible around the both of you. My Guide volunteer, Beverly Morgan said: “My partner and I were fostering a little girl, but I was
looking to do some voluntary work whilst she was at school when a friend told me about the My Guide service at Guide Dogs. “I gave it a go, and I was struck at how warm and welcoming staff at Guide Dogs were. I completed my training and was soon matched with my first service user Shauna. “I felt apprehensive at first, but Shauna is so chatty and easy to get on with, that soon I relaxed. We attend a knitting group together each week and it feels good knowing I am doing something useful to help someone else.” Guide Dogs is aiming to provide 1,200 more My Guide partnerships in 2019 – that’s more than 187,000 volunteering hours to fill. GARDEN How to attract
butterflies
to your garden
Make your flowerbeds beautiful by filling your garden with butterflies. You’re also supporting biodiversity and helping the environment too! While we all love to see butterflies in our gardens, some are more common to spot but other species are in decline as they lose their habitats.
Think about your area
Here are some simple steps you can take to make your garden a home for visiting butterflies. These steps will encourage them to make home permanently in your garden, patio or windowsill.
Do some research on butterflies native to where you live. Find out what they
Provide food
certain plants won’t be helpful in areas some species don’t visit.
The first step in attracting butterflies is providing the insects a source of food. Adult butterflies get their energy from nectar, and they visit gardens looking for flowers to feed on. By growing nectar-rich flowers in the spring and summer months to encourage them.
Species including the painted lady and the large white have a wide distribution
Cultivate different plants that flower throughout the year and keep them watered, because the supply of nectar reduces if the plants struggle for water.
Even if you don’t have a large garden, that’s no reason why you can’t attract
Here are some flowers that adult butterflies enjoy: heather, lavender, Bowles' Mauve wallflower, bluebells, marigolds, buttercups, hyacinth, clover, garden mint, blackberry bushes, among others.
Create warmth Butterflies enjoy warmth. Try to pick out spots where the sun hits to cultivate your plants that attract them. Butterflies also need room to fly, so create a flowerbed full of nectar-rich plants alongside an open area of patio or lawn. Though spring and summer are the most common times to spot our fluttery friends, planting Ivy will provide a late nectar supply in the autumn months.
feed on and try to provide food for the caterpillar stage of the butterfly life cycle. It’s important to know which plants to plant to attract certain species. Growing
across the UK, but the white admiral only thrives in warmer, southern climates.
Utilise window boxes some gorgeous butterflies. Make sure to place your window box on a window which gets the most sunlight. You could plant marigolds, yarrow or lavender.
Place fallen fruit on the ground Butterflies need food to be available from the early spring through to late summer. In August, some species will feed on the sugar inside discarded fruit. Popular choices for butterflies are rotting pears, apples and berries. Butterflies struggle to consume anything too hard, so if you leave fruit out on the compost heap, the riper the better.
Cut down on weeding You can’t have butterflies and moths without caterpillars. This might seem like an obvious point but to attract butterflies you need to support the growth of caterpillars. Let the grass grow tall for the summer in one section of your garden. Larvae also enjoy feeding on nettles, thistles, holly and ivy. While they may not be your first choice to have in your garden, it’s vital to support them.

Black-eyed Susan
You might not know its name, but you are probably familiar with the Rudbeckia. A late summer perennial daisy. It's sometimes called coneflower or black-eyed Susan Rudbeckia fulgida is the classic ‘Black-eyed Susan’, with sunflower-yellow flowers and a very black central cone. It does better in damper ground than many of the varieties so choose this one if your garden is less well-drained. I love Rudbeckia ‘Prairie glow’. It is a stunning plant and good for adding height as it grows to
It flowers from early August to late September and I find it a valuable addition to the late summer garden. It does particularly well in full sun in rich, well-drained soil. You can sow them as annuals indoors in spring to set out after frost or plant as perennials in spring or autumn. Divide every 3 to 4 years and deadhead to avoid self-seeding, though personally I see selfseeding as a bonus trait in a plant! Mildew can be an issue on the foliage but can be avoided if you don't overcrowd the plants. Watch the young foliage because slugs and snails find it tasty. Once the plants are established this isn't a problem. Rudbeckia ‘Golden compass’ produces masses of classic bright yellow and black Rudbeckia flowers on a bushy plant. It grows up to 70cm in height and can be grown from seed as a half-hardy annual or a short-lived hardy perennial.

1.5m. Its huge 6cm diameter flowers have warm orange petals with yellow tips. Rudbeckia ‘Irish eyes’ is a more unusual variety with a yellowish rather than brown cone, as well as yellow florets. It repeat flowers from July through to October. If your soil is on the dry side, try Rudbeckia fulgida ‘Deamii’. It produces shining, golden flowers with jet-black cones from early September to late October and into November. It has slightly smaller flowers, but they are lovely, and abundant. Rudbeckias naturally grow in dry savannahs, grassland prairies and in the glades of rocky upland forests across North America but they have become a much-loved bushy stalwart of the herbaceous border and will delight from late summer right through the autumn. Happy gardening.

Enjoy Table Tennis in the City Parks Families in Peterborough can enjoy games of table tennis in some of the city’s best-loved parks. Peterborough City Council has teamed up with Viridor, Table Tennis England and Living Sport to install eight new table tennis tables across the city. The tables have been installed in Central Park, Itter Park, Nene Valley Community Centre, Connect Park and Braybrook. They are free to use, with bats and balls available to borrow. Councillor Steve Allen, Peterborough City Council’s cabinet member for recreation, said: “With the school summer
holidays just around the corner, the new tables present families with a great chance to get outdoors and have some fun.” Meanwhile, the council will be working with table tennis clubs from the Peterborough area as part of a new scheme to offer people the chance to learn skills from local coaches and find out about community table tennis. Ping! is an opportunity for table tennis to be visible, accessible, free and sociable in public places.

ONLY UK THEATRE DATE IN 2019! ‘Never has such a legendary Motown band ever come to Peterborough before’ said show promoter Steve Jason, ‘and it is the only UK theatre date in the whole of the UK this year- they come over to headline The Rewind Festival in Henley on the Saturday in front of 40,000 people but we’ve managed to get them to come to Peterborough 2 days earlier to perform on Broadway at The New Theatre.
Thursday 15 August Motown Superstars
THE FOUR TOPS
Live on stage at The Peterborough New Theatre
‘The last time the band came over they were playing the big Arenas with the Temptations, we’re doing a bit of googling and we think the show here in Peterborough will be the smallest theatre show the band have done in the UK in 25 years – it is that much of coup!!’ ‘Without doubt they will be the biggest name to appear at the venue this year’
The Four Tops Biography The quartet, originally called the Four Aims, made their first single for Chess in 1956, and spent seven years on the road and in nightclubs, singing pop, blues, Broadway, but mostly jazz—fourpart harmony jazz. When Motown’s Berry Gordy Jr. found out they had hustled a national “Tonight Show” appearance, he signed them without an audition to be the marquee act for the company’s Workshop Jazz label. That proved short-lived, and Stubbs’ powerhouse baritone lead and the exquisite harmonies of Fakir, Benson, and Payton started making one smash after another with the writing-producing trio HollandDozier-Holland. Their first Motown hit, “Baby I Need Your Loving” in 1964, made them stars and their sixties track record on the label is indispensable to any retrospective of the decade. Their songs, soulful and bittersweet, were across-the-board successes. “I Can’t Help Myself (Sugar Pie, Honey Bunch),” a no. 1 R&B and Pop smash in 1965, is one of Motown’s longest-running chart toppers; it was quickly followed by a longtime favorite, “It’s The Same Old Song” (no. 2 R&B/no. 5 pop). Their commercial peak was highlighted by a romantic
trilogy: the no. 1 “Reach Out I’ll Be There,” “Standing In The Shadows Of Love” (no. 2 R&B/no. 6 pop) and “Bernadette” (no. 3 R&B/no. 4 pop)—an extraordinary run of instant H-D-H classics. Other Tops hits from the decade included “Ask The Lonely,” “Shake Me, Wake Me (When It’s Over),” “Something About You,” “You Keep Running Away,” “7-Rooms Of Gloom” and their covers of “Walk Away Renee” and “If I Were A Carpenter.” The group was also extraordinarily popular in the U.K. After H-D-H split from Motown, producer Frank Wilson supervised the R&B Top 10 hits “It’s All In The Game” and “Still Water (Love)” at the start of the seventies. The Tops also teamed with Motown’s top girl group, the Supremes, postDiana Ross. Billing themselves The Magnificent Seven for a series of albums, they hit with a cover of “River Deep - Mountain High.” When Motown left Detroit in 1972 to move to Los Angeles, the steadfast Tops decided to stay at home, and with another label. They kept up a string of hits with ABC-Dunhill for the next few years: “Ain’t No Woman (Like The One I’ve Got),” a Top 5 hit; the Top 10 “Keeper Of The Castle”; and the R&B Top 10’s “Are You Man Enough
(from the movie Shaft In Africa),” “Sweet Understanding Love,” “One Chain Don’t Make No Prison” (later covered by Santana), “Midnight Flower” and the disco perennial “Catfish.” In 1980 the group moved to Casablanca Records. The following year they were at no. 1 again, with “When She Was My Girl,” making them one of the few groups to have hits in three consecutive decades. They also scored R&B Top 40s with the ballads “Tonight I’m Gonna Love You All Over” and “I Believe In You And Me,” the original version of the 1996 Whitney Houston smash. And the Tops were heard in the film Grease 2 with “Back To School Again.” By 1983, riding the wave of the company’s 25th anniversary celebration, the Tops were back with Motown and H-D-H. The reunion resulted in the R&B Top 40 hits “I Just Can’t Walk Away” and “Sexy Ways.” They signed with Arista later in the decade, and there they racked up their final solo Top 40 hit, “Indestructible,” which was the theme of the 1988 Summer Olympics. That year they also partnered with Aretha Franklin, a longtime friend from Detroit, for the Top 40 R&B “If Ever A Love There Was.” During this period, Stubbs
stepped out and gained notoriety for voicing the man-eating plant Audrey II in the film musical Little Shop Of Horrors, for which he sang the cult classic “Mean Green Mother From Outer Space.” In 1990, with 24 Top 40 pop hits to their credit, the Four Tops were inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame. Though they would no longer have hits on record, the group continued to be a hit in concert, touring incessantly, a towering testament to the enduring legacy of the Motown Sound they helped shape and define. Following Payton’s death in 1997, the group briefly worked as a trio until Theo Peoples, a former Temptation, was recruited to restore the group to a quartet. When Stubbs subsequently grew ill, Peoples became the lead singer and former Motown artist-producer Ronnie McNeir was enlisted to fill Payton’s spot. In 2005, when Benson died, Payton’s son Roquel replaced him. For Rolling Stone’s 2004 article “The Immortals – The Greatest Artists Of All Time,” Smokey Robinson remembered: “They were the best in my neighbourhood in Detroit when I was growing up (and) the Four Tops will always be one of the biggest and the best groups ever. Their music is forever.

An Eastern Eton Mess or Mango Mess
25
By Parveen Ashraf
One of the best things about summer is that it is my birthday, which is lovely, but more importantly, it's 'mango season' yaaaay!... I know what you are thinking, surely you can buy mangoes all year round?... Well, yes, you can, but I am talking about mangoes from South Asia which are only available during the summer months. These mangoes are a slightly different shape; a tad more narrow, less fibrous and taste as sweet as nectar. With these mangoes, I will often make an Eastern version of the quintessential English dessert Eton Mess and I call it Mango Mess. I discovered this recipe by accident, but it was a happy accident!
My good friend Jeannie and I were catering a Bollywood Summer Garden Party and Jeannie was helping me plan the desserts – as she is an excellent baker. The client did not want a typical Asian desert but wanted something sweet, tasty, summery and ethnic. After a few ideas, Jeannie came up with Mango Mess, which my client loved, I then made it for her 50 guests. It went down a treat! I served it in crystal martini glasses topped with edible white glitter dust - well I love a little sparkle.
Recipe for Mango Mess Preparation time: 10 minutes Cooking (Assembly) time: 10 minutes Makes approximately 8 individual portions Ingredients 250 ml double cream 100ml tinned mango pulp 2 medium sized mangoes 4 ready-made meringue nests (5x7cm) Method Peel & dice the mango into 1cm pieces. In a large bowl, add the cream and whip till soft peaks are formed. Carefully crush the meringues into bite sized pieces, mix into the cream, add the mango and fold together. Serve in dessert glass of choice, drizzled with mango pulp
For more recipes, go to
TOP TIP You can buy these mangoes from most Indian specialist shops but if you cannot get hold of any fresh mangoes, you can use either tinned or frozen, but these days, I have noticed that the major supermarkets sell fresh fruit already peeled and cut in the fresh fruit section and these are available throughout the year.

Recipe for Raspberry Ripple Ice Cream July is National Ice Cream Month. Celebrate with this homemade raspberry ripple Preparation time: 20 minutes Cooking time: 10 minutes Servings: 12 Ingredients 250g raspberries 225g caster sugar 2 large eggs 4 egg yolks 600ml double cream Raspberries or other fruit for serving Method Place the raspberries in a pan with 2 tbsp of the sugar. Cook on a medium heat until sugar dissolves into the pulp. Simmer for 5 mins until thickened, then push the pulp through a sieve into a bowl and discard the seeds. Place the eggs, egg yolks and remaining sugar into a bowl. Whisk with an electric whisk hand whisk to combine everything, then place over a pan of gently simmering water – the bowl should not touch the water. Beat with the electric whisk for 3-4 mins until thick and pale. Remove from heat and continue beating with the whisk until cool. In another bowl, whisk the cream until it forms soft peaks, then gently fold into the cool egg mix until just combined. Pour the mix into a shallow container or dish that can be frozen. Just before you freeze the mixture gently swirl the raspberry puree through, cover with cling film and freeze for at least 6 hrs. Remove from the freezer about 20 minutes before serving. Place scoops of the ice cream into bowls with extra raspberries or other fruit. It’s also gorgeous in cones.
No Milk Today - Alternatives to Dairy
By Louise Addison
Cow’s milk is considered dietary staple by many. It’s rich in protein and important vitamins and minerals, including calcium, phosphorus and B vitamins. But some people can’t or don’t drink cow’s milk at all due to personal preferences, dietary restrictions, allergies or intolerances 2–3% of children under the age of three are allergic to cow’s milk although most grow out of it. The allergy can cause a range of symptoms, including rashes, upset tummies and even anaphylaxis. Lactose intolerance is very common. Lactose is a sugar found in cow’s milk. People with lactose intolerance cannot digest this sugar so it stays in the digestive tract causing gas and irritation. Vegans exclude all products from their diet that originate from animals, and some people simply do not like the taste of cow’s milk. So, what is available for those who prefer a non-dairy alternative? Soy Milk – Made with either soybeans or soy protein isolate, and often contains thickeners and vegetable oils. It typically has a mild and creamy flavour. It has a similar nutritional makeup to cow’s milk, and works best in cooking, in coffee and on cereal. Almond Milk (or other nut milks) – This is made with either whole almonds or almond butter and water (cashew, hazelnut and macadamia nut milks are also available). Nut milks have a light texture and a slightly sweet and nutty flavour. They contain fewer calories and fat thank cow’s milk but are also significantly lower in protein and carbohydrates. They can be added to coffee and tea, used on cereal, mixed
in smoothies and used as milk in desserts and baked goods. Coconut Milk - Made from water and the white flesh of brown coconuts. It has a creamy texture and a sweet, subtle coconut flavour. It contains less fat than cow’s milk and significantly less protein and carbohydrates. It can be used on cereal and in smoothies and cooking. Oat Milk – Made from a mixture of oats and water. It is high in soluble fibre, which is good for gut health. It is naturally sweet with a mild flavour and can be used in cooking in the same way as cow’s milk. It is also good for use on cereal or in smoothies. Rice Milk - Made from milled white or brown rice and water this is the least likely milk substitute to trigger allergies, which makes it a safe option for those with allergies or intolerances to dairy, gluten, soy or nuts. It is mild in taste and naturally sweet and is nice to drink on its own as well as in smoothies, or in desserts or over cereal. It is not a good choice for children or the elderly because of its low protein content, and it has a high glycaemic index so is not good for diabetics either. There is no one milk substitute that is ideal for everyone. The taste, nutrition and cost of these alternatives can vary considerably, so it is worth taking a while to experiment and find those that work best for you.

The Perfect Picnic
Picnics are a summer staple, and they’re not only reserved for children. Though typically you might include some sausage rolls, sandwiches and a cake or two... or three, picnics can be as simple or as fun as you’d like them to be! So, here are some quick and simple ideas to make your picnic more fun. Sweet like chocolate. Using chocolate, or any other dietary substitute on some fruit and chilling them is a wonderful idea. By taking 10 minutes the night before to melt your chocolate and cover your fruit, you have a different substitute for dessert than the usual.
Season, season, season If you don’t have time to make your salads, take salt, pepper, paprika or some oils with you to make your store-bought packaged food taste like home. If you were eating at home you wouldn’t leave it plain, so set the same standard for your picnic.
Smooth-ie operator Smoothies are a deliciously healthy way to get in some of your 5-a-day. By making your own at home, you save money but you can also experiment with different flavours. They can be super creamy or more like a Slushie if you’d like. For the adults, you could also add in your favourite tipple!

Six signs that you might have a
Food Addiction By Dr Bunmi Aboaba, a Recovery Coach specialising in Food Addiction
We all have to eat and are surrounded by information about what to eat, we are tempted by treats and admonished by diets To better understand your relationship with food and whether you may be suffering from a food addiction, take some time to examine your behaviours around food. Here are six signs you may be addicted to food:
Thinking about food too much Has food become a major subject in your internal dialogue? Are you often thinking ‘how long until lunch / snack break / dinner?’ It may not be the food itself, it may be the idea of the food. The buying, the unwrapping or preparing. The thought of buying something nice, just for you, that no one else knows about.
Being dishonest about how much you eat Have you ever bought extra food, then eaten it before getting home, so that no one would see? Is there a stash in the house, perhaps biscuits hidden away? Do you say to yourself ‘I have to hide some food away or someone else will eat it first!’ If you’re hiding, concealing or not admitting the truth to others, it suggests you already know that it is a problem.
Excuses Do any of these sound familiar: ‘It’s just one more slice…’, ‘If I skip lunch tomorrow, I can have extra dessert tonight…’ (of course, lunch still happens
as usual). Do you set yourself targets, and then when you fail those targets, make an excuse for yourself? When you make a plan, buy the groceries, and know when you are going to cook and eat, then – something happens. A friend has a break up. Someone in the family is ill. Do those plans go out the window?
Physical implications If you eat badly, the weight will pile on. If you are eating unhealthy things, that can also show up in acne, bad breath or dental problems. You might be out of breath more often. At the more extreme end, this can lead to diabetes, heart problems, liver problems. Because these changes happen gradually, it can be a shock to wake up one morning and no longer have that body that worked so well before.
Stuck in a vicious circle Addiction is all about mental health. Eating, denying that you have eaten, feeling guilty, low self-esteem, and then eating to get rid of those feelings. This can turn into a never-ending cycle. If your mental health is suffering, it might be time to make some changes.

Having cravings, even after eating a full meal After eating a satisfying meal, is there a voice in your head saying ‘but what would really finish the meal off is…’? You are full but there is that nagging feeling of wanting more. This is a sign that your brain has got used to the dopamine rush that some foods give. The level which used to mean ‘enough’ has now gone up. If you have three or more of these signs, it could well be a warning that it’s time to act. HISTORY
The flood in the Fens
The Fens or Fenland lies around the coast of The Wash and takes in an area in Cambridgeshire, Lincolnshire and Norfolk
How they draine If you go to Holme Fen near Peterborough or Wicken Fen in Cambridgeshire you will find fenland preserved exactly as it was during prehistoric times i.e. marsh, tall reeds and thickets of buckthorn, where rivers meander slowly leaving islands standing above them. Until the 17th century all attempts to drain the Fens failed as there was no common plan. Fleam Dyke from Fen Ditton, and Devil’s Dyke from Reach to Wood Ditton (both in Cambridgeshire), are perhaps relics of the Bronze Age.
The Romans built sea walls – hence the name of villages like Walsoken in the Isle of Ely and Car Dyke from Cambridge to Lincoln. Whittlesey, Eastrea and Manea owe their names to the Anglo-Saxons as the suffix ea or ey meant island. The Anglo-Saxons did no drainage work. Due to their inaccessibility and discomfort the Fens attracted huge numbers of monks and nuns. The great abbeys of Peterborough, Crowland, Ramsey and Ely took possession of

Although the Fenmen were adept at stilt-walking ... landowners were worried about the increasing loss of cattle, sheep and horses plus crops, lost in the winter floods. the Fenland. In the 15th century, the Bishop of Ely (John Morton), constructed Morton’s Leam – a straight cut from Stanground (in Peterborough) to Guyhirn (near Wisbech) which exists today. It was intended to improve the course and drainage capacity of the River Nene. Although the Fenmen were adept at stiltwalking and could drive cattle through four feet of water to upland pastures, landowners were worried about the increasing loss of cattle, sheep and horses plus crops, lost in the winter floods. It was not until the General Drainage Act was passed in 1600 that landowners were to give a portion of their lands to persons undertaking to keep them dry. Yet, there remained no common plan and a landowner who had a drainage system in good repair could have his fields flooded in a moment due to his neighbour’s carelessness. King James 1 took a great interest in the Fens and in 1620 asked Sir Cornelius Vermuyden (a prominent Dutch engineer) to apply his experience of land reclamation in the

ned the Fens (part 1) June & Vernon Bull – local historians and authors Netherlands to the problem. Sadly, James 1 died before he could get his plans worked out and Vermuyden went further north to South Yorkshire to drain the Fens there. Thus, locals heaved a sigh of relief, because it meant that their fish and waterfowl could remain plump and abundant. They could also continue cutting peat for their fires and sedge (reed grass) for their roofs. Also, Vermuyden being a foreigner was not popular with the Fenmen. However, in 1629 a new contract was proposed between Vermuyden and Francis, Francis - The Fourth Earl of Bedford
Opposition started to mount with some people advancing the view that to interfere with works of nature was against the Christian religion. Fourth Earl of Bedford who owned 20,000 acres near Thorney and Whittlesey. The Earl and 13 of his friends agreed that Vermuyden should get 95,000 acres if he drained the Bedford level within six years. Thus, the agreement called The Indenture of Fourteen Parts was drawn up with venture capital. With the existence of this plan, local opposition started to mount with some people advancing the view that to interfere with works of nature was against the Christian religion. Others thought witchcraft might be involved. Commoners thought that their lands would be enclosed and that their masters would set them to ploughing and planting seeds. Tradesmen in Peterborough, Huntingdon and Cambridge were afraid that their navigation routes would be closed. The only way they could take goods to the port of Kings Lynn was by river and if the rivers were diverted and blocked by dams and sluices then their barges and valuable cargos would be unable to get through. Nevertheless, work commences, and in the next issue we explore how Oliver Cromwell and the Civil War impacted on the draining work.

FITNESS Working Out FITNESS TRENDS We take a look at some of the current fitness trends to help you decide which might best suit your lifestyle ... Wearable Technology Wearable technology, like smart watches, fitness trackers, heart monitors, and more, shows no signs of going anywhere, so expect to see even more ways to track and monitor your fitness in the future. Group Training Group training is defined as any workout with more than five participants. These classes go beyond losing weight and gaining muscle; by offering physical and mental benefits, group exercise classes gives members the potential to achieve great results and improve overall health, while having fun. Bootcamp Workouts In most cases, you can expect to do calisthenics, such as pullups, pushups, lunges and crunches, as well as drills and sprints. A boot camp workout is essentially a type of interval training — bursts of intense activity alternated with intervals of lighter activity. The treadmill is making a comeback The humble treadmill is back. They've been a part of the studio landscape for a while, but more recently they’ve started acting as headliners in their own right, with treadmill-centric studios popping up all over the shop. HIIT (High-Intensity Interval Training) A HIIT workout involves short bursts of high-intensity bouts of exercise followed by a short period of rest. They're usually 30 minutes or less, though they can be longer. But the main point is to get a quick and very efficient workout. The best part? You can try a HIIT workout right from your living room. Fitness Programs for Older Adults As the population ages, it's only sensical that fitness offerings would age along with us. These programs
"emphasize and cater to the fitness needs of the Baby Boom and older generations," says the ACSM. Which is wise, considering exercising is a great way for people to maintain bone density and muscle mass as they age, plus reap the numerous other health benefits that come with being active. Bodyweight Training This modality uses just your bodyweight—think push-ups and planks—to get you sweating. We're big fans of no-equipment or DIY equipment workouts because they're extremely convenient—great for any time, any where. And, well, they work. Your body itself is truly a great resistance training tool. Yoga Yoga is an ancient form of exercise that focuses on strength, flexibility and breathing to boost physical and mental wellbeing which has recently taken on many forms, like 'Power Yoga, Yogilates ..' We have had anti-gravity yoga, laughter yoga and doga and now goats are getting in on the action, too. While you are holding your best downward dog, a goat might stand on your back. It is a growing trend that started in Oregon in the US, and has been embraced by celebrities such as Khloe Kardashian and more. So, now that we've seen goat yoga, who knows what other forms of yoga the future holds? Personal Training This is an individual certified to have a varying degree of knowledge of general fitness involved in exercise prescription and instruction who motivate clients by setting goals and providing feedback and accountability to clients. Trainers also measure their client's strengths and weaknesses with fitness assessments. These fitness assessments may also be performed before and after an exercise
program to measure their client's improvements in physical fitness. They should also educate their clients in many other aspects of wellness besides exercise, including general health and nutrition guidelines. It is very important that a trainer takes their time to evaluate a clients personal life outside of the gym. This way, personal trainers can figure out what kind of stress their client may be putting on certain areas of the body during their every day lives. It's been one of the top 10 trends for over a decade, but now, we have innovative iterations like online personal training to make it even more accessible. Functional Fitness Training Train your muscles to work together and prepare them for daily tasks by simulating common movements you might do at home, at work or in sports. ... For example, a squat is a functional exercise because it trains the muscles used when you rise up and down from a chair or pick up low objects. Functional fitness training uses exercise to improve balance, coordination, strength, and endurance to improve activities of daily living. A squat, for example, is a functional exercise because it can mimic the motions it takes to bend down and pick something up off the floor. This trend is on the rise in part thanks to the increase of fitness programs that cater to older adults. Exercise Is Medicine Exercise Is Medicine is ACSM's global health initiative that
encourages health-care providers to get their patients on an exercise regimen and analyse physical activity as part of regular check-ups. Since the survey was sent out to mostly ACSM members and affiliates, this is a bit of a self-selecting pool. Zany for Zumba! If you’re looking to get in shape for summer, why not dance your way to fitness? Zumba is one of the most popular exercise classes in the UK, with classes held in schools, community centres and halls across the country. 15 million people have tried it so far, for good reason. Zumba is fun, energetic and suitable for beginners up. You don’t need any special equipment, just some comfy clothes that allow you to move freely, and a pair of nonslip shoes. The music is usually Latininspired, so it’s fast and makes you want to move. There’s a little bit of salsa, a dash of hip-hop, a dollop of mambo, and a few more styles thrown into the mix. Zumba also includes a few aerobic moves, such as squats and lunges. Your instructor will demonstrate key moves, then the class will follow them together. Don’t worry about going wrong, no one gets all the moves right straight away, and no one cares. Half of the fun of Zumba is being able to laugh at yourself as you spin the wrong way. You’ll probably be out of breathe, red-faced and sweaty when you finish the class, but you’ll also be counting down the days to the next class.

retreats The word retreat literally means 'to pull back' With the demands on our busy lives seemingly growing by the day, it is no surprise that many people are choosing to step away from traditional holidays and weekends away, in favour of pulling back and choosing to go on a retreat instead. Whilst retreats have been around for a while now, their popularity has quite literally exploded over the last few years. I believe much of this has to do with practices such as yoga, meditation and spirituality in general becoming more mainstream, along with the understanding that looking after ourselves physically, mentally and emotionally is tantamount to leading a happy and fulfilling life. Here are a few of the potential benefits of going on a retreat: A rare opportunity to prioritise yourself and relax and unwind from the stresses and distractions of daily life Can be used as an opportunity to take time out alone or with a friend or family member in order to spend some quality time together
A good opportunity to detox from social media, phones, computers, the bottle of wine you drink every evening, junk food, a toxic relationship and anything else that is not serving you Spending time in nature, eating nutritious food, taking part in yoga/ exercise/meditation etc can bring a whole host of health benefits including reducing anxiety, helping you to sleep better and generally promoting a feeling of wellbeing To gain a new perspective, clarity and/ or inspiration on issues or situations that you may be struggling with Remember who you are and let go of the multiples roles you have to play each day Meet new people who may be in a similar position I wanted to facilitate a retreat of my own that wasn’t primarily centred around one thing e.g yoga, mindfulness, fitness but something that encompasses my entire mind, body and soul ethos.

BEAUTY Hair Today Have you ever marked a life event by changing your hairstyle? Did you regret it, or did you feel free? Many people, most of them women, use haircuts as a marker for change. In films the main character often undergoes a makeover as a metaphor for the dramatic changes they undergo in the movie: Sandy in Grease, and Julia Roberts' character in Pretty Woman are just two of them. Before the makeover things were bad; after the makeover things are good. Simples. Or is it? In real life hairdressers bear witness to this scenario frequently. We may not tell them directly, but often they will sense we're on a mission to create a new improved
version of ourselves; or a quick way to shed the past and move on. But dramatic hairstyle changes while in the midst of a life crisis can prove ill-advised. Sometimes we're not really after a new hairstyle, more a whole new life. And as satisfying as it is to leave a salon with a completely new look, we need to remember that our hair might look different, but our problems will remain the same. We will still feel just as bad about our husband running off with our best friend, we’ll just be doing it with shorter hair! During a divorce, a bereavement or a health crisis we will experience a maelstrom of emotions: and one-minute chopping all our hair off will feel

No, it’s not ‘just a haircut!’ By Tracey Anderson like the best decision in the world, but the next minute, when we look in the mirror and see a total stranger staring back at us it might feel terrifying. Yet hair is an important aspect of how we express who we are and how we would like to be seen. Changing our hair is one of the easiest ways to send a signal to the world that we have changed. It can be a great tool to help us shed an outgrown 'self'. My friend shed her shoulder-length blonde hair for a pixie crop shortly after she gave birth to twins. She felt she needed freedom from her hair care routine, so she could spend more time with her babies. For her it was freeing to be able to wake, shower and be ready to go in minutes. I had my tousled waist-length hair cut to a chic bob when I started my first proper job in journalism. I felt like I needed to create a bit of distance between 'student me' and 'professional me'. Like the caterpillar shedding the chrysalis I was ready to be someone new and the hair salon was my chrysalis of choice. So, the next time you collapse into the hairdresser’s comfy chair intent on an image overhaul, just pause for a second and ask yourself why, and whether now is the best time.

Do You Need a Hearing Test? Hearing loss is one of the most common conditions affecting older and elderly adults. Approximately one in three people between the ages of 65 and 74 has hearing loss and nearly half of those older than 75 have difficulty hearing. Having trouble hearing can make it hard to understand and follow a doctor's advice, to respond to warnings, and to hear doorbells and alarms. It can also make it hard to enjoy talking with friends and family. All of this can be frustrating, embarrassing, and even dangerous.
Here are five simple ways to tell if it’s time to check your hearing: You often ask people to repeat themselves - It sounds as though people around you are mumbling all the time and you find it hard to hear people unless they’re facing you directly. It's more common to experience hearing loss in the high frequencies so another sign is having trouble understanding women and children who tend to have higher-pitched voices. Your family complains that the TV is too loud - If you’re turning up the volume to a point where those around you complain about how loud it is, it might be time to pay attention, especially since listening to excessively loud music can do further damage to your hearing. You hear a ringing or buzzing noise in your ears - Tinnitus occurs when you hear sounds like ringing or buzzing noise in your ears when no such sound is present. Sometimes it's temporary e.g. after attending a loud concert. But ringing which doesn’t fade away, without any apparent cause is a common first sign of hearing loss. You strain to hear in noisy places - You struggle to focus on what people are saying in places with background noise, such as a restaurant or shopping centre. This can make you feel very tired. You miss everyday sounds - If people complain you miss their calls or say they have to knock for ages before you answer the door consider it a warning sign, especially if combined with people complaining you have the TV or radio set too loud. Whilst it can be tough to admit your hearing isn’t as good as it used to be, it’s best to take action early on. With the right support and technology, hearing loss doesn’t need to keep you from enjoying all the fun things in life. Book an appointment with your GP or an audiologist today.

Did you know? The total prize money on offer at tennis‘ most prestigious championships, Wimbledon, has increased for the eighth year in a row. Winners of the tournament, which begins on Monday 1 July, will get the largest share of the £38m pot, up from £34m last year. Male and female competitors receive the same amount of prize money, similar to last year and every tournament since 2007, but unlike some tournaments prior. Wimbledon 2019 is upon us. Let's take a look at some of the homegrown champions from the past The Championships, Wimbledon is the most famous tennis event in the British sporting calendar. It was first contested in 1877 and played on outdoor grass courts at the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club (AELTC) in the Wimbledon suburb of London, United Kingdom. The Ladies' Singles tournament began in 1884, and the women's game has developed massively over the last century. We are all familiar with the incredible Williams sisters, but our own Nation has a pretty impressive history in the Women's singles, which is often overlooked by the British media. Dorothy Round Little won her first title in 1934 — the same year as her British male counterpart Fred Perry also won his first. She won her second Wimbledon title at age 29 in 1937. A devout Christian, she often refused to play on Sundays. She published two books, Modern Lawn Tennis and Tennis For Girls. After her retirement in 1939 she worked as a coach, journalist, and president of the Worcester Lawn Tennis Club. Florence Angela Margaret Mortimer Barrett beat another English player Christine Truman Janes to become Wimbledon's women's singles champion in 1961. She was aged 29 and partially deaf.
Ann Haydon-Jones had already won the French Open and U.S. Open twice before winning Wimbledon in 1969. She first showed her talent as a young girl. Her father was a table tennis champion and he encouraged her competitive spirit. She played the famous Billie Jean King several times but never beat her until her win at Wimbledon. Haydon-Jones was also the first left-handed female singles player to win the championship. Virginia Wade was a maths graduate, famed for her powerful serve. She defeated Billie Jean King at the US Open, earning her first Grand Slam title. She went on to win the Australian Open in 1972, and in 1977, nearly a decade after her first victory, Wade would become Wimbledon's last British singles winner for 36 years. The year she won, defeating Dutch player Betty Stöve at Wimbledon was the Queen's Silver Jubilee and Queen Elizabeth II herself was present to enjoy her victory. It remains to be seen whether current British number one Johanna Konta can better her semi-final performance in 2017 to add her name to the list of amazing female British tennis players who have held the Wimbledon trophy aloft.
Wimbledon 2019 Tickets Most tickets for this year’s tournament have already been allocated via a public ballot open from 1 September to 31 December, but if you weren’t a participant then you’ve already missed the boat on that. Thankfully, there are other methods of obtaining the most sought-after tickets in tennis. Via Ticketmaster, several hundred Centre Court and No 3 Court tickets for the following day’s play will be released daily during the tournament and be available to purchase online. To be in with the best chance of purchasing them, it’s worth registering with myWimbledon for updates.

Muddled over maintenance? You may not think you are, but it is very likely that you haven’t fully appreciated the significance of an order for child maintenance payments included in a consent finance order within divorce proceedings. It is always desirable to have a finance order in place, which you can ask the Court to make after decree nisi in divorce proceedings, because it brings closure to the financial claims of the divorcing parties so you know there won’t be any nasty surprises in the future. But it is not uncommon for the recipient of child maintenance payments set out in a consent order, to get a nasty surprise when the payer, very often the husband, decides to reduce or stop the payments altogether. You may think that can’t happen, but in fact after 12 months from the date of the order, child maintenance is not enforceable in the usual course of events and the Child Maintenance Service takes over the enforcement of maintenance, in accordance with their own calculations. Either party can apply for a CMS assessment and once this is made, the terms of the court order are cancelled. So bear this in mind if you are presented with a consent order with agreed child maintenance included. It only has a short life span. Any questions, consult with your. If you need further information about this issue, contact a family law specialist.

MAKING TAX DIGITAL VAT Update HMRC’s latest MTD policy update means supplier statements can now be used to record expenses for input tax purposes; a big time saving for many businesses that adopt spreadsheet accounting or those that have many monthly invoices. A controversial policy of HMRC has always been that a business using, for example, the cash accounting scheme and spreadsheets to record their expenses had to record every single purchase invoice in a digital format even though the business might make a single payment to a supplier based on a statement covering perhaps 40 or 50 different invoices. It would be sensible for the business to make a one-line entry based on the payment total. With the cash accounting scheme input tax is only claimed when payments are made to suppliers. That policy has now changed. The updated notice has also confirmed that petty cash expenses can be posted as a single total if no individual receipt within the posting exceeds £50 and the total of all receipts does not exceed £500 per entry. Both figures are VAT inclusive.
Change of address Bird & Co are moving from their current address in Holme Road Yaxley to 183 Main Street Yaxley (previously known as Sophie T’s vintage tea room). An exact date for the move is not known as internal changes are being done, but a rough date will be the end of July/early August 2019. Further details will be announced in due course, but of course all of our client’s will be notified as will everyone else.

For some this is going on lovely holidays all over the world, for others this is being able to treat the family and for some it is simply the knowledge that they have earnt the right to enjoy themselves in later life. And with any luck, over the course
of time we will start to accrue lots of assets, be it the family home, a nice car or, in some circumstances, an inheritance from a loved one. However, all these nice things could end up creating a bit of a headache in later life as they might

Inheritance Tax? When we start out in our working lives we all look to work as hard as we can, so we can enjoy life to the full
attract an inheritance tax bill. That said, with careful planning it could be possible to manage any potential inheritance tax bill that may come your way. Of course, one of the best ways to make sure you don’t attract an inheritance tax bill is to spend it! However, more often than not we see clients who want to make sure their family can also benefit from the fruits of their labour. One way of doing this is to take advantage of the annual small gift allowance,
currently ÂŁ3,000.00 per year. Or with some trust planning you could ensure your loved ones benefit from your hard work without the fear that some of the assets will end up with the tax man. Truth, half truths and rumours
How the man in the pub can cost you thousands It always surprises me how many people
are prepared take the opinion a WE LOOKto OUT FOR ofYOU, stranger as gospel truth SOcomplete YOU CAN TAKE CARE OF HER
So many of my appointments start with ‘My mate said’ or ‘I was talking to a guy in the pub’ and increasingly ‘This woman who had a stall in the supermarket told me.’ They almost always go on to describe some magical formula which involves giving away your home to your kids or to a trust to guarantee that the house can never be taken by the local authority to ecting pay for your care fees. g. In reality, nobody could make such a guarantee and anyone who en are at is in does is, at best, being economical n that with the truth. That is not to say that there is nothing you can do to protect your
assets – there almost always is – but the one size fits all simple solutions that are trotted out by the ill advised are never the answer. A couple of years ago a client of mine asked me about giving his house to his sons, because a mate had done it. I advised him strongly against it, pointed out the pitfalls and told him that I wouldn’t act for him if he decided to do it. He did it anyway. Later that year he turned up at my office and told me somewhat sheepishly that his eldest son had got divorced. Because of his son’s divorce and the fact that his son ‘owned’ the house he had paid £80,000 to his ex- daughter in law to buy back her share of his own home.

Adapting to a new financial reality With the rising cost of living, the uncertainty during economic change in the UK, now more than ever we should all be aware of financial security for ourselves and our families for the future. We all want our loved ones to be protected in the event of illness or bereavement, for our own peace of mind. There are several ways to achieve this: Making a Will makes it easier for your family to settle your estate when you die. If you don’t write a Will, everything you own will be shared as defined by law, which isn’t always the way you may wish. A Will let’s you have your say in how your estate is settled. A Lasting Power of Attorney protects your future if your have a physical or mental incapacity following an accident or old age in later life. None of us know what lies ahead, so it is vital to consider protecting your own wellbeing and your estate, if you were unable to make decisions for yourself. Consider a pre-paid funeral plan. Since 2004, funeral costs have soared. You fix the cost at today’s
prices with a choice of plan payments, saving you on average 30-50%. It shields your family from rising costs and enables you to specify the details of your funeral arrangements. A Property Protection Trust is designed to protect your home from being included in possible future assessments that determine how much you should contribute to longterm care fees and can be included in your Will. However, it cannot be used solely for the aim of avoiding care home fees. It pays to seriously think about protecting your estate, ensuring that your children receive at least half the value of your property, and that your partner or spouse can continue to live in and benefit from your share of the property.

TRAVEL & LEISURE
WESTLIFE
with Shaws Coaches
I recently enjoyed an amazing trip to see Westlife with Shaws Coaches. Westlife were performing in Nottingham on their Twenty Tour, celebrating twenty years of hits.
It was an absolutely wonderful evening; you could say we were in A World Of Our Own! (That one’s for all the Westlife fans out there). On arrival we were greeted by a warm welcome from driver Pete. The coach itself was beautifully presented, clean and tidy. Shaws Coaches provide a
number of departure points which are really convenient for people living in the surrounding areas of Peterborough; Market Deeping, Bourne and Stamford. Which meant for us, plenty of choice on where to be picked up from. They also have a number of other pickup points, used on other trips.
If you want convenient, competitively priced trips out then Shaws is the company to go with. Shaws also offer a number of other trips such as: top London shows, theme parks and visitor attractions, stately homes and seaside resorts. With such great value, I couldn’t recommend them more if I tried.

The River Cruise
51
TRAVEL FEATURE
Experience
by Jamie Banks
River cruising has become increasingly popular in recent years with many of the world’s major rivers now being toured
In Europe, the Danube is one of the most popular rivers, followed by the Rhine and Elbe. Elsewhere in the world, the Amazon, the Nile, the Yangtze in China and the Mekong from Vietnam to Cambodia are also popular destinations. I was lucky enough to experience a river cruise through Budapest on the Danube with Ama Waterways earlier this year. On arrival we
were met with glasses of champagne while the check in process was carried out. We were taken to a stunning bar area and I was surprised by how luxurious the boat was. Our cabin was spacious and had a large balcony with table and chairs where we could sit and watch the scenery pass by. The whole cruise was all inclusive with a great range of drinks available. The restaurants
on board served spectacular food. I was worried that the boat would feel cramped, but it never did even though we were told it was a fully booked trip. Being moored up in the centre of the city made it incredibly easy to see the sights of Budapest. It was a fantastic experience from start to finish and I would recommend considering a river cruise for your next holiday.
