Welcome ...
I enjoyed a wonderful time and made the most of the long, summer days with walks in local parks. So, it seems difficult to believe that a minority of people can cause damage to our beautiful open spaces. Across Peterborough, park users and local residents are being asked to support and protect their local park by reporting any suspicious activity that they witness. Please see page 10 to find out more information.

With the start of the new academic year, many parents struggle with overwhelming feelings of guilt as they try to juggle work and family commitments. In a subject close to many of our hearts, Carla Jones writes about the mounting evidence of positive benefits for children of working mothers on page 15. I recently spent a lovely Saturday afternoon at The Ramblewood Gin and Rum Festival. Each gin stocked behind the bars has been selected based on outstanding craftsmanship, delightful flavour and the most enjoyable drinking experiences. Check out our review and discover our favourite drinks and mixers.
The Stamford Ladies group has raised an amazing ÂŁ2,400 for Thorpe Hall, and now plans to raise more. Read more about their work, plus their most ambitious project yet, on pages 5 and 24. This issue concludes our three-part series by June and Vernon Bull about the great floods of Peterborough and the draining of Whittlesea Mere. To take a glimpse back in time, please turn to page 12.

There's still time to enter the Civic Awards If you know an individual who always goes above and beyond or a group that helps out in the community, there is still plenty of time to put their name forward for a Civic Award. Five years ago, Peterborough City Council launched the Civic Awards to recognise residents, groups, organisations and businesses that make a real difference and help bring communities together. The awards are the communities way of saying thank you to all those who go out of their way to help others. The closing date for nominations is 30 October 2019 and the nomination categories for the awards are as follows:
Councillor Peter Hiller, chairman of the council’s Honours Panel, said: “The Civic Awards are a once-a-year opportunity to recognise and reward Peterborough people who go the extra mile for others, often giving their time for free and making a difference to the lives of some of our most vulnerable residents. "If you know a shining star in the community, nominating them for an award is a great way to mark their contribution and publicly acknowledge all that they do. Going through the nominations is one of the highlights of my role on the council's Honours Panel and I hope we see a similarly high number of applications as in the previous five years since the Civic Awards were launched." The Civic Awards use an open nomination scheme. This means that anyone can nominate a resident, group, organisation or business within the city for an award as long as the nominee meets the criteria for that award.
Young Person Lifetime Achievement Community Involvement Business Environment Contribution to Art and Culture Contribution to Sports
Following the closing date all nominations will be passed on to the Honours Panel which will meet in November to draw up a shortlist of finalists and select winners in each category. The winners of the Civic Awards will be announced at the council meeting in December, followed by a presentation ceremony in the new year at the Town Hall.
Nomination forms are available to download at www.peterborough.gov.uk, from the Town Hall reception or by emailing susan.proctor@peterborough.gov.uk Nominations can also be posted to Susan Proctor, Civic Awards, Governance Department, Peterborough City Council, Town Hall, Peterborough, PE1 1HG, or emailed to susan.proctor@peterborough.gov.uk

New fundraising group for Sue Ryder Thorpe Hall Hospice
Cake sales, coffee mornings, dinner parties, by Julie Gay a fashion show, black-tie ball...and more When one of her closest friends died of cancer Julie Gay teamed up with eight other women and set up the Stamford Ladies Fundraising Group to raise money for the Sue Ryder Thorpe Hall Hospice in Peterborough. ‘Seeing the outstanding level of care at Sue Ryder Thorpe Hall really made me want to help in some way,’ says Julie, and I decided I wanted to do something that would keep the memory of my beautiful friend alive. I’m now working with a fantastic team of women, all of whom have lost loved ones that have been cared for at Thorpe Hall, and who share the same vision.’ Sue Ryder Thorpe Hall Hospice currently looks after around 500 people with terminal illness and has delivered palliative care to 55 Stamfordians in the last two years alone. Although this care is provided to the patients and their families for free, the annual cost of
running the hospice is £3.4million, and more than two-thirds of this must be fundraised. Since January 2019, when the group first formed, Stamford Ladies has already raised £2,400 for the hospice from a cake sale and two dinner parties. It now plans to hold regular coffee mornings, and a fashion show in Stamford later in the year. More recently, the group has been preparing for its most ambitious project yet—a charity ball, to be held in February at the Greetham Valley Golf Club. ‘Thinking up new fundraising ideas is both challenging and rewarding,’ says Julie, and we try to make the events as fun and life-affirming as possible to honour the strength of spirit of the friends and family we have lost, and also to contribute to making the final days of those residing at the hospice as comfortable and enjoyable as possible.’

BATTLE AGAINST THE SCAMMERS It seems that not a week goes by lately without warning of a new scam – with cyber criminals becoming more and more sophisticated An email from a supposed legal or Government source can be so convincing that it can fool even the shrewdest among us, as can a request to transfer money or pay a bill. However, the fight against scams is hotting up. As well as the many reliable channels which can inform and advise about scams (including the UK Action Fraud), there is also a user-friendly Friends Against Scams website - a National Trading Standards Scams Team initiative which aims to protect and prevent people from becoming victims of scams by empowering communities to 'Take a Stand Against Scams.' Friends Against Scams is designed to inspire action, highlight the scale of the problem, change the perceptions of why people fall for scams and make scams a community, regional and national topic. And what’s more, Friends Against Scams offers a free, easy-to-use online learning service where anyone can learn about the different types of scams and how to spot and support a victim. The session – which takes around 15 minutes to complete – can be done in the comfort of your own home, in the workplace or even on your phone. Upon completion you will even receive a certificate. Find out more by visiting: (www.friendsagainstscams.org.uk/ training/friends-elearning) With increased knowledge and awareness, people can make scams part of everyday conversation with their family, friends and neighbours, which will enable them to protect themselves and others. Friends Against Scams also offer easily accessibly awareness
sessions run by SCAMchampions, who are trained and supported by the NTS Scams Team. Each 45-minute awareness session is fun and interactive and a chance to meet other people who want to ‘Take a Stand Against Scams’. The website will have all the details.
Scams can vary from postal to online. Don’t be caught out by things like: Phishing Where you receive an email that pretends to be from an authority (e.g., your bank) in which you’re asked to give out your passwords or personal information such as your address, telephone number, or other data.
Pharming The fraudulent practice of directing online users to a fake website, which mimics the appearance of a real / legitimate one.
Romance Scams A confidence scam, whereby a criminal displays fake romantic intentions towards a victim in order to gain their affection to then extort money.
Impersonation of UK officials Criminals impersonate a UK official to obtain personal information by claiming that the victim is due a refund or must make an urgent payment.
Ad Clicking Where hackers encourage you to click on a link (perhaps by email, or on a web page) which will then open malware or simply ask for your personal info.

One of the questions I'm often asked as a gardener is 'How do I trim my privet hedge?'
9
GARDEN
Rachael Leverton
The privet hedge Privet hedges aren't a particularly sexy subject for a gardening article, but hedge-trimming seems to cause a lot of angst so let me tackle it here. Privet is one of our most popular hedging plants. It has dense foliage which is green all year round, and it’s hardy which means it’s suited to a wide range of planting sites. It’s also available in a selection of varieties and root types, so there’s a Privet hedge to suit most gardens. Autumn is a good time to trim them because there’s little chance of disturbing any birds who might be nesting in them. Nesting season generally runs from March to early August.
If you have a small hedge like those outside terraced town houses, then hand-held hedge shears are fine, but for large hedges an electric or even a petrol hedge-trimmer is definitely easier. If you have one, give it a check over and make sure it's sharp and well lubricated. Safety should be paramount. Wear safety goggles and sturdy gloves. It's not overkill. I once spent Saturday afternoon in eye casualty because a small sharp twig flew into my eye while I was trimming a hedge. It hurt and took ages to heal properly so be warned. Before starting, remove any potential obstacles on the ground which might prove to be a

trip hazard. Avoid using powered tools above shoulder height; instead use a sturdy step ladder set on stable ground. If your hedge trimmer is electric use a residual current device (RCD) for safety purposes, and don't use it in damp conditions. One little trick I learned at a hedge-cutting course a few years ago is to cut hedges so that they are slightly tapered on both sides. This will mean the base is wider than the top and light can reach the bottom of the hedge, which means the hedge will be greener and look healthier.
Happy gardening
TOP TIPS to ensure an even, symmetrical hedge: Straight edges are difficult to cut by eye. Use a taut horizontal string tied between two stout canes to act as a guide so you can cut the top of the hedge level. For vertical lines use canes or stakes pushed into the ground. When using shears, ensure that the top of the hedge is cut level and flat by keeping the blades of the shears parallel to the line of the hedge. When using a hedge trimmer, keep the blade parallel to the hedge and use a wide, sweeping action working from the bottom of the hedge upwards, so that the cut foliage falls away
Weatherproofing your garden September is the time to generally wind down in the garden by tidying up and clearing away spent vegetation and flowers and making way for new ones As the UK weather is so unpredictable, it can take a toll on your garden. If the weather is wet, then cleared ground can quickly become weedy, which should be cleared as soon as they appear. If the weather is dry, weeding will be replaced by watering. Though this may seem obvious, a common mistake is neglecting your watering as the autumn months arrive. Some plants may require a little more TLC, so cover them temporarily. Vulnerable, newly germinated seedlings should be watched more closely. As autumn approaches, the garden will begin to glow with crimsons and gold. From the leaves
on the trees to berries and the last of the summer blooms. As such, it’s an ideal time to collect your clippings and seeds for next year. Thinking ahead to Spring, if you want bright, full trees and shrubs, autumn is the perfect time to start planting. If you use a greenhouse, temperamental Septembers can be quite annoying. Remove any protective shading in the greenhouse. If there are any hot, bright days, you will still need good ventilation, whereas on cool nights, remember to close your vents. When the weather turns, damping down should be stopped entirely. Rosie Boon

Friends Launch ‘Protect Your Park’ Campaign Friends of Central Park (FoCP) and a number of partners and supporters are promoting a new ‘Protect Your Park’ campaign.
Across Peterborough, park users and local residents are being asked to support and protect their local park and outdoor spaces by reporting any suspicious activity that they witness. This can be done in a number of ways which could include using the police online reporting form at www.cambs.police.uk/ report/Report-Shared/Report-informationabout-crime, emailing your local councillor or reporting the incident to Friends of Central Park on 07730 153161 who will in turn complete an online form on your behalf. There will also be leaflets available in The Buttercross Café in Central Park that can be filled in and left at a collection point which can then be entered online on your behalf. The term ‘suspicious activity’ could include witnessing bullying or intimidating behaviour from individuals or groups of people, damage to park property including gardens and trees, illegal drug or alcohol use in or around the area, the exchanging of drugs or weapons in or around the area or any type of hate crime. Supporting the ‘Protect Your Park’ campaign and reporting any suspicious activity will promote the area in a positive way so that users and local residents can continue quiet enjoyment in a safe, secure environment.

General meetings: Monday 2 September 7pm The Friends Meeting House, Thorpe Road Tuesday 10 September 7pm Metal's Chauffeur's Cottage, St Peter's Road Non-violent Direct Action training Sunday 15 & Saturday 28 September XRPeterborough
Extinction Rebellion (XR) in Peterborough has been busy organising and outreaching to share the message of the current climate crisis across the city. The group is focused on continuing outreach in preparation for the International Rebellion which will begin in London on 7 October
Peterborough Extinction Rebellion The autumn international rebellion will be a nonviolent disruptive action planned to bring Extinction Rebellion’s demands to the Government’s doorstep once more. It will involve blockades, training, people’s assemblies, artistic contributions and street parties. New members are encouraged to consider supporting the London action. On 20 July, the group met in the Cathedral grounds to undertake a ‘Funeral March’; a symbolic action that invited all who are deeply concerned by the climate and ecological crisis to come together in public to share their concern. The invitation advised: “We rebel because we love this world; it breaks our hearts to see it ravaged, to watch so many people and animals all over this world already dying, to know that this will soon happen to our children if nothing changes. There is no way forward without giving credence to our grief”. The funeral was attended by about 100 participants in funeral dress, who brought flowers and walked through Peterborough city centre holding a coffin. Following the march they gathered at the Guild Hall where a number of keynote speakers addressed the crowd and discussed the climate crisis, sharing the importance of coming together in action and the hope of collaboration. The action ended on a high note; with music, singing, a samba band and some banner painting. The funeral was deliberately planned to precede the city council meeting, where a climate emergency motion was to be discussed. The group had brought the climate motion to a cross-party working group, where they had urged councillors of all parties to go ‘beyond politics’ and adopt the motion which declared a ‘climate emergency’ and committed the council to being carbon neutral by 2030 and instigate a citizens' assembly to guide them.
Councillor John Holdich explained the motion was 'not about politics, but about doing the right thing.' The meeting was held on Wednesday 23 July, which turned out to be one of the hottest days on record and in an uncomfortably hot council chamber the motion received cross party support and was passed unanimously. XR Peterborough has continued to undertake training and to collaborate with residents. Many people have never been involved in disruptive actions and therefore training to participate in nonviolent direct action (NVDA) is important. On 31 August, with the permission of the Cathedral, Extinction Rebellion Peterborough staged a ‘Die-in’ symbolic action under the ‘Gaia Earth’
Anna Bunten
Ely, of all generations. When 11 minutes had passed, Alice awoke and struck the singing bowl 11 times to call the end of the action. The group arose and formed a circle and Eleanor, the group’s choir leader, lifted the mood by bringing everyone together to sing ‘Bele Mama’, a Cameroon song meaning ‘call mother’; in this context 'mother earth'. With the Die-in action over, the group moved to the New Building, nestled at the east end of the Cathedral, dating from around 1500. Between majestic arches and facing vibrant stained glass windows, they gathered to listen to Dr Rupert Read's talk entitled: 'Hope to the world: The true direness of the potential climate catastrophe we face – and Extinction Rebellion’s astonishing bid to stop it.'
“A huge crowd, great questions, an astounding sacred venue. But the thing that moved me most of all from the day was the ‘Die-in’ we staged under the Gaia/Earth at the centre of the Cathedral.” Dr Rupert Read Installation. The group arrived at 1pm and placed a hand-made coffin, with headstones and posters on the floor. XR Stamford member Alice played a singing bowl to start the action, striking it 11 times; last October the UN Secretary reportedly warned that we have 12 years to act to limit global warming and so the group chose to represent that there are 11 years. There was a large crowd surrounding the Gaia, some of whom stepped forward to lie under the seven metre diameter sphere, featuring 120dpi detailed NASA imagery of the earth’s surface which rotated above them. A choir sang ‘Every part of the Earth,’ the speech and song of Chief Seattle, followed by six minutes of silence; a time for reflection. On the floor were XR supporters from Peterborough, Stamford, Huntingdon, Norwich, Cambridge and
Rupert describes himself as an 'Associated Professor of Philosophy at the University of East Anglia, an author, a blogger, and – closest to my heart – a climate and environmental campaigner'. He is a media spokesman for Extinction Rebellion, being involved in the group's political liaison and strategy. Delivering his talk very honestly, Rupert skilfully balanced difficult scientific facts with strategies for emotional support, community building and a call to action to bring a hope for positive change. At the conclusion of his talk he shared information about the International Rebellion due to start in London on 7 October. Rupert urged people to come to support and witness a peaceful non-violent direct action. The event concluded with an engaging question and answer session.

HISTORY
The great floods of Peterborough and the draining of Whittlesea Mere (conclusion of three-part article)
How they drained Whittlesea Mere
It is reputed that Whittlesea Mere formed from about 500 BC when silt was deposited by the rivers Nene and Welland and water backed up which in turn was unable to flow away towards the Wash. Thus, a series of large ponds formed, and water plants, reeds, sedges and mosses grew. Wet and dry periods ensued and over time the plants decomposed and turned into peat. The Mere formed as a shallow lake with a peat bog on the south side and a riverbank on the north side. The Mere occupied land southeast of Yaxley Fen, south of Farcet Fen, and north of Holme Fen. The town of Whittlesey lies to the northeast. Whittlesea Mere stretched 6 miles wide and was the largest and shallowest lake in lowland England. The Mere was always at or below sea level which made it very difficult to drain. Great gales were mainly a feature of autumn and spring. Summer weather was often muggy and close, drying the peat out. Whittlesea Mere
Appold centrifugal pump
was completely dried out in the very hot summer of 1826. The bed of the Mere contained only 100 acres of water where over 1,000 was the norm and this left bare large areas of mud. In 1826 high wind blew what little water remained into deep fissures, leaving tons of eel, carp, pike and perch flapping on the surface. Although the Mere filled up again in the winter of 1827 – no fish were caught in it for another 5 years. In December 1851 Whittlesea Mere was drained artificially when a 25h.p. Appold centrifugal pump (capable of lifting 16,000 gallons of water per minute) was used. The Mere’s owner Mr Wells of Holme Fen also instructed labourers to cut a bank in the Mere allowing the water to escape into one of the outflowing rivers. Thousands came to watch this feat of engineering; some brought big baskets or horses and carts to carry the fish away. Some people strapped boards on to their feet so they would

not sink into the soft mud and thereby waded carefully towards the fish which were left dying on the surface. Various treasures were found – including a valuable chandelier, various swords and a pure gold censer (incense burner). In November 1852 heavy rains swelled the outer rivers and the new banks could not stand the extra weight of water so Whittlesea Mere returned to its former glory but was then emptied again by artificial means leaving an area of some 3,000 acres of peat-covered swamp to be turned into agricultural land. The River Nene used to be tidal reaching Woodston Wharf in Peterborough until the Dog-in-Doublet sluice lock was built 5 miles downstream east of Peterborough in 1937. It was officially opened in 1938 to protect the city, the Ortons, and the near Nene valley as far as Oundle from the tidal influences of The Wash. Up until that time flooding in Peterborough was frequent from the late 13th century until the most recent

and notable in April 1998 - when a month’s rain fell in 24 hours causing the River Nene to burst its banks. Previous floods include those of 1848, 1903/04, 1910, 1912 and 1916. The most notable being when the Nene rose to a height of 17ft 6in on 27 August 1912 after nearly 14 hours of ceaseless rain the previous day. Crowds gathered on the Town Bridge to watch the Nene’s flood waters swirling past with the river almost to the top of the arches of the iron bridge. (In the early 14th century Peterborough had a wooden bridge on stone piers which existed until 1872 with many renovations over the centuries. The wooden bridge was replaced by an iron bridge which in turn was superseded by the present-day reinforced-concrete bridge which opened in 1934.) An outline of 1904 transport on the Nene was given in Bradshaw’s Canals and Navigable
13
Rivers of England and Wales. It stated that there was very little trade on the Nene between Northampton and Peterborough, but that Fen Lighters trade up to Wansford for stone. Whilst the Nene was tidal up until 1938 it did not give enough depth of water between Peterborough and Wisbech for the passage of loaded lighters on up to 5 in every 14 days. Even when these vessels were able to sail, they had to be frequently helped over the Northey gravel shoal between Peterborough and the Dog-in-a Doublet by the release of water upstream from Woodston and Orton staunches. The electrically operated Dog-in-a- Doublet Lock was constructed by order of the Nene Catchment Board. Its adjoining sluice controls high tides, to stop the water surge upstream towards Peterborough threatening to flood parts of the city. The sluice (refurbished in 20102011) ensures that the water level upstream is
of enough depth for the passage of boats. Its name is thought to derive from a terrier owned by a former innkeeper of the nearby riverside pub. The story goes that the dog had lost its coat because of a skin disease so he wore a little leather jacket, so locals referred to the terrier as the Dog-in-a-Doublet. Another tale involving a pub links to a pubgoer during the 1903-04 floods in Peterborough who was so eager to get his daily pint that he sailed down Bridge Street in a boat to his favourite pub on Bridge Street – aptly named The Boat Inn! Flooding naturally brought heartache to many people but none more so than those who lived in yards off Bridge Street…. namely Bodgers Yard and Hills Yard, plus School Place which was located off Albert Place. These rented properties were often substandard and overcrowded.

HERITAGE OPEN DAYS
More than 30 buildings in Peterborough and the surrounding villages have signed up to take part in this year’s Heritage Open Days weekend, which will be celebrated in Peterborough from Friday 13 September to Sunday 15 September, with a couple of events the following weekend. David Jost New venues include the 18th century D’Arcy Jewellers’ Shop in the city centre, the ArcHaus architects’ offices located in a carefully restored 1930s art deco building near Wansford, the magnificent ground floor reception rooms of Thorpe Hall, and a range of fine churches – Longthorpe Church, rebuilt on its present site in the 1260’s by the Thorpe family; Castor Church opening its wonderful tower; Marholm’s medieval church with impressive memorials to the Fitzwilliam family; the listed church in rural Upton; Water Newton’s medieval church set beside the River Nene; and, also on the river, the ancient church at Stibbington. Many venues will be offering guided tours, talks and displays whilst others are opening their doors for visitors to wander freely as they choose. These events provide the opportunity to explore the history of Peterborough and, in some cases, to visit buildings not normally open to the public. The programme is the result of close co-operation between Peterborough Civic Society, Peterborough Cathedral, Peterborough City Council and Vivacity who have encouraged participants to open their doors free of charge. David Jost, Organiser for the Peterborough area, said:
“We have a number of buildings that are exciting newcomers to the heritage celebrations which we feel are sure to be popular. We are enormously grateful to all the owners who so generously give their time to open up their premises’”. Martin Russell, Head of Support Services, for the Thorpe Hall Hospice, said “The Sue Ryder organization is pleased to be able to open Thorpe Hall for the Heritage Open Days in September. We look forward to welcoming visitors to the Hall and the Gardens. Refreshments will be available in our café” Heritage Open Days celebrate England’s fantastic architecture and culture by offering free access to properties that are usually closed to the public or charge an entrance fee, and specially organised events to showcase a property’s history. Heritage Open Days has been running as a national celebration since 1994 – celebrating its 25th anniversary in 2019. Pick up a copy of the flier from the Visitor Information Centre, the Cathedral or your local library.

With the start of the new academic year, many parents struggle with overwhelming feelings of guilt as they try to juggle work and family commitments. Social media inundates us with ‘First Day at School’ photos, but for many parents this can be an incredibly painful day. As well as the inevitable mixed feelings of pride and fear as their child reaches that all-important milestone, the moment is often tarnished by emotions of sadness and guilt for those working parents who are unable to take their child to school for the first time
FAMILY
WORKING MUM GUILT
There is a gender bias which stems from the 1950s where women were expected to be stay at home mums. But times have moved on, women work- it’s normal, and mostly necessary!
Could it actually be helpful? by Carla Jones One mum I spoke to described a “punch in the gut sensation” that she won’t be able to take her youngest child for her first day at school. “I have helped her through everything in her young life and it feels painful almost, to not be able to witness this important moment in her life.” It’s not just about that first day at school. The guilt can take many forms and is all part of a complex juggling act with mum as chief juggler! A lot of parents feel guilty about how much time they allow their children to spend on screens whilst they work from home, or when the TV is the regular babysitter. We feel guilty when we forget to send our children in with money
won’t be able to attend. But is this guilt just part of being female? Just part of never feeling like you’re quite doing enough or never making the right decisions? Even today, in 2019, the guilt seems to plague working mums to a much greater extent than the dads. There is a gender bias which stems from the 1950s where women were expected to be stay at home mums. But times have moved on, women work- it’s normal, and mostly necessary! Why then do we still feel this guilt? Is it that we are expected to feel guilty by society? By the media? By other mums? A mum of two young daughters told me about her frustration with the reaction she gets when she tells other mums
at home mum. I was wrong too. Whatever decisions we make are always about doing the best for our families in the individual situations we’re in. So whatever our choices, surely our guilt could be more manageable if we were a bit more accepting of each other’s situations.
As working mums, we are excellent role models and our children will benefit from this. Studies show that 'daughters of working mothers go on to have more successful careers and more equal relationships.' for the cake bake sale, or forget the non-uniform/dress up day; we feel guilty when we miss our child’s first race at sports day, when we can’t invite their friends round because we’re always at work or when our children can’t join in with activities in school holidays because they are in holiday clubs. Other mums I spoke to talked about the endless guilt about feeling that you’re not doing anything well enough. “I think you always feel guilty that you’re not giving 100% to either your children or your job.” The same mum describes how she once crashed her car because she’d been so stressed about being late for a meeting after dropping her son off at school. A primary school teacher with an 8 year old son describes the sadness and guilt she feels at never being able to go to her son’s assemblies or other activities which take place during the school day. She says her son hands over the letters from school with “pleading eyes” knowing that she
that she works internationally. “They always ask, ‘don’t you miss your kids?’ never whether I enjoy my job! My male colleagues never get asked this.” Why are women still judged in this way and why do we still even use the phrase ‘working mums’ as though we are alien creatures doing something strangely abnormal? I remember talking to another mum when my eldest child started school. I was overwhelmed with the logistics of getting him to before-school club, the youngest to nursery and then get to work on time. The other mum replied, ‘Well what do you expect if you try and have it all’? I was utterly astounded by her remark- I wasn’t trying to have it all! I wasn’t a working solely to satisfy my own needs; I worked because I needed to earn money- to pay our bills, to pay for our children. She had made a judgement about me which was completely wrong. But if I’m honest I had probably been judging her for being a stay
The science behind the emotion, suggests that feelings of guilt could actually be used as a healthy and positive tool in helping us to lead a fulfilled life. A 2015 article in The Guardian explored the idea that guilt comes from feelings of obligation and that it helps us to think about each significant section of our lives- our own internal set of checks and balances if you like. Instead of guilt being something that we beat ourselves up about, perhaps we could see it as a positive emotion. The article calls it “useful guilt, our emotional equivalent of physical pain; a warning sign that something’s overloaded, some unseen damage is being done.” Perhaps it is there to help us think, to take stock, make changes if necessary and to one day realise that we are probably doing a pretty good job at the juggling act. As working mums, we are excellent role models and our children will benefit from this. Studies show that “daughters
of working mothers go on to have more successful careers and more equal relationships.” Likewise, sons of working mums will see women as strong, equal, independent figures in their lives, and this can only have positive outcomes for their future relationships with both men and women. Our children can be proud of our achievements and the work that we do. We are sending out strong signals about work ethic, how to treat each other and about managing time and difficult situations. Good parents will be there for their children always; they will be there emotionally, with love, with unwavering support, to take away bad dreams at night and to listen to their worries. As children grow up the issues change but the support still stays the same; we will be a shoulder to cry on when they split up with their first girlfriend or boyfriend, when exam results are not what they’d hoped for or when friendships go wrong. As loving parents, we will be there, whether we work or not, full time or part time, from home or abroad; our love and support for our children won’t change. We’re all just doing our best so let’s accept the guilt, but not let it rule us; let it be there to help and balance us. Let us understand that by having a full and busy life we are bringing up emotionally healthy children. Let’s accept each other’s choices and let’s be just a bit kinder to ourselves and each other. Oh, and the TV… it’s fine as a babysitter when you need it to be.

RIP IT UP THE 70s
Friday 20 September 7.30pm
From the Producers of ‘Rip it Up The 50s’ and ‘Rip It Up The 60s’ – which sold over 100,000 tickets and received 5 star reviews across the UK, Rip It Up The 70s comes to the New Theatre Peterborough with a brand new cast and show. Starring Peterborough’s very own Louis Smith. Rip It Up The 70s promises to bring the soundtrack of arguably popular music’s greatest decade to life in another feast of song and dance. Having starred in the UK tours for both Rip it Up The 50s and Rip It Up The 60s, Louis Smith MBE will now star in Rip It Up The 70s, joined by former S Club 7 star and Strictly Come Dancing finalist Rachel Stevens. Also making her Rip It Up debut alongside Rachel is Melody Thornton, key member of multiplatinum-selling pop juggernaut Pussycat Dolls. Bringing his vocal prowess to the show is boy band Blue’s Lee Ryan. While David Bowie and Marc Bolan gave us out-ofthis-world glam rock, New York gave us disco and punk. Philly Soul brought its flared stride to the masses, while the Eurovision Song Contest made its greatest contribution to pop music with the arrival of Abba.
But that’s not even close to telling the story of 1970s music ... Lest we forget that The Beatles decided to Let It Be, John Lennon asked us to Imagine, Led Zeppelin climbed their Stairway to Heaven, Pink Floyd saw The Dark Side Of The Moon, the Eagles checked-out of Hotel California, The Bee Gees went down with a Saturday Night Fever, Carole King wove her Tapestry, Fleetwood Mac shared Rumours, ‘The Boss’ was Born To Run and Michael Jackson went Off The Wall. And we have still yet to mention Queen, Elton John, Don McLean, The Carpenters, Marvin Gaye and Barry White. Oh, and Sandy and Danny in Grease!

HAIRDRESSING
Bangs are hairdresser-speak for a fringe, and they are all the rage right now as celebrities like Miley Cyrus, Emma Stone and Reese Witherspoon have all been photographed sporting them. Bangs can be a fun and easy way to freshen-up your hairstyle, but you need to know which bangs will suit your face shape best. Round Go for thick side-swept bangs cut at a strong angle to break the shape of your face. Avoid straightcut bangs as they will emphasise the roundness. Square

Long heavy bangs that fall just below the eyebrows and are tapered down towards the outer corner of the eyes will soften the face. You can push the bangs to one side to further break-up the shape. Avoid short straight bangs as they will make your face look squarer.
Long Long choppy bangs with longer soft layers around the face with shorten and soften your features. Baby bangs on the other hand will make your face look longer. Heart-shape Side-swept bangs which run from the brows to the cheekbones will emphasise your eyes and pretty, delicate chin. A full, blunt wide fringe will emphasise your wider forehead. Oval You are lucky. Your balanced features mean you can choose any style you like. Choose to emphasise the features you like best. Baby bangs will emphasise beautiful brows; eyebrow-grazing bangs will draw attention to your eyes, and if you love your cheekbones go for a Bardot style with soft layers that end at the top of the checks.

Organic
September
Organic September is a monthlong campaign which aims to raise awareness of organic products, and the brands, producers and farmers who bring them to us Items must meet a number of strict regulations to be labelled organic, from the growing to the production. You probably weren’t aware that all organic food companies and farms are inspected yearly to ensure that they meet the high standards required for organic food under European law. When you buy organic you can be sure that the products you are buying: Contain no artificial additives or preservatives. Contain fewer pesticides. There are only 20 pesticides that can be used by organic farmers all of which are derived from natural ingredients. This is compared to almost 300 pesticides used in regular farming. Conform to high standards of animal welfare. Contain no genetically modified ingredients. Have been produced in a way that is sustainable. It’s easy to get involved, just look for the organic logo when you’re shopping. Some of you might think it’s too costly and if it’s out of your budget you could grow your own! Not only are there a lot of health benefits, it also helps the environment. Shopping organic reduces energy use, helps soil erosion and helps conserve water. Instead of changing your entire shopping list, even switching The Soil Association says that by switching just one item in your shop to organic will help contribute to changing our food system, buying more organic food means more organic farms so fewer pesticides which is better for our wildlife and means more farm animals raised under higher welfare standards.

Gin and rum
Throughout August, the Ramblewood Inn hosted a festival of abundant taste-tingling rums and flavoursome gins! Located in woodland, the Ramblewood is the perfect setting for some quiet drinks. Surrounded by gorgeous trees, this is a great location, away from the hustle and bustle of Peterborough city. On offer was a huge selection of 50 gins and 20 rums, plus a great variety of mixers from Coca-Cola Schweppes. Brittany and Charli were on hand in the impressive gin shack to offer their expertise. The team at Your Scene, of course, had to try more than a couple!
Buss no.509 gin mixed with Honest Organic Pink Lemonade It seems that all my drinks ended up being colourful, as another favourite of mine was the Buss no.509 gin mixed with Honest Organic Pink Lemonade. Differing to normal lemonade as a mixer, this adds in lemon, raspberry and hints of lemon-blossom. Caroline 'We may all love to think of ourselves as connoisseurs of mixed drinks, yet we might be less likely to try something new.'
We all chose different favourites, so here’s our top choices:
So, instead of sticking with her typical mixer, Caroline branched out ...
Rosie 'As a self-confessed gin-lover, the idea of 50 gins being there is amazing, although there was little chance I’d come anywhere close to trying all of them!'
Schweppes Muscovado with Sailor Jerry’s Spiced Rum
There were two that particularly stood out for Rosie ... The ‘Realm of the Unicorn’ Marshmallow Gin Liqueur by Zymurgorium. 'Served with ice, the gin is dazzling with glitter and looks mystical as it swirls within your glass. A real pop of pink it’s as pretty as it is tasty.'
'This was incredible, designed especially for dark spirits. You can taste the hints of vanilla, caramel and butterscotch. ' Teresa 'It’s so hard to pick any firm favourites, as all of them stood-out. I am partial to a rum or two.' ... Rebellion Spiced Rum, mixed with Coca-Cola 'I loved the Rebellion spiced rum, mixed with classic Coca-Cola. The flavour was rich with ginger, black pepper and creamsoda vanilla. Adnam’s Copper House dry gin with Cucumber Schweppes Tonic I loved this too. The cucumber flavouring added so much to the gin and made the drink feel fresh and crisp.

Apple Strudel
Preparation time: 20 mins
Cooking time: 40-45 mins
Utensils
September brings a glut of apples. Make the most of them with this delicious strudel recipe
Serves: 6-8
Ingredients 750g Bramley apples, peeled, cored, quartered and sliced 1½ tsp ground cinnamon ½ unwaxed lemon, zest only 2 tsp lemon juice 100g golden caster sugar
75g raisins 95g butter 40g white breadcrumbs 6 large sheets filo pastry 1 tbsp icing sugar
Method q Preheat the oven to 190C/170C Fan/Gas 5. Line a baking tray with baking parchment. w Mix the quartered apples with the cinnamon, lemon zest and juice, sugar and raisins. In a small frying pan, melt 20g butter and fry the breadcrumbs until golden-brown, then add these to the apple mixture. e
Melt the remaining butter in a pan. On a clean, dry tea-towel lay a sheet of the filo and brush with some of the melted butter. Lay another sheet on top and repeat until you have used all the filo. Layering the pastry with the melted butter helps to create flaky layers.
r
Place the filling along the length of the pastry along one side about 2-3cm/1in from the edge. Using the tea-towel to help you, roll the pastry up to enclose the filling. Tuck the ends in and roll the strudel seam-side down onto the lined baking sheet. Brush with the remaining melted butter.
t Bake for 40-45 minutes, until golden-brown. Leave to cool to room temperature and dust with icing sugar. Slice and serve with cream, ice cream or custard.

CRAFT SCENE
CRAFT I’m Tas and I’m the owner of Very Craftea, based in Peterborough. I have been trading for two-and-a-half years and love having my own business
Hello? Is it tea you’re looking for? I have grown steadily over the last few months, have some great links with other local businesses (such as When Polly Met Fergie in Westgate Arcade, The Fine Food Store in Stamford and The Coffee House in Ailsworth) and have the nicest customers who I really value and appreciate The idea of Very Craftea was thought up one evening with my good friend Natalie, a cup of tea, some cake and trying to answer the thought provoking questions, like 'why aren't there trousers for dogs?'
the amazing name, I needed to be different. I tackled the tea first... I sell socially responsible loose leaf tea. What does that mean I hear you ask. Well, I work with a single tea merchant, based in the UK, and they give 50% of their profits to address the issue of educational development in and around the underserved tea growing region of Darjeeling, so the more tea I sell, the more money can go towards projects to help. This money goes direct to the people it affects, not to a big corporation. My plan is to give back
... we realised that this really was our idea of heaven. Good company and tea. After three hours trying to work out if dogs did wear trousers, how would they wear them, and drinking many, many cups of tea, we realised that this really was our idea of heaven. Good company and tea. What would make it even better would be a craft kit to go along with it (funny story, we met at a knitting class! How hipster!) Natalie then said "Oh, we're Very Craftea - you know, like craft and tea” and that's how Very Craftea came into existence! The premise was simple, sell tea and craft kits! But loads of companies sell craft kits, and even more sell tea, so other than
directly as a business and I'm looking into different schemes in how to do this, so hoping to finalise that in the new year Next the craft kits. I spent a long time trying to find, modern, fresh kits which more importantly contained everything that was needed to finish it (how many times have you bought a kit, only to realise you need to buy loads of other stuff to finish it? Ain't nobody got time for that!) So, all the kits I sell are not only super fly, but also with everything contained. They are also made by other women in the UK who have their own small businesses which is really important to me.
I’ll be writing a column for Your Scene over the next couple of months, so you’ll find out more about tea, eco friendly advice, and even some myth busting! If you can’t wait till next month, you can find me on Facebook, Instagram and on my website. Drop me a line and say hi! www.verycraftea.co.uk /VeryCraftea

Dee-zyn Jewellery was created by Deanne Echarri back in 2008; a jewellery designer and creator who has been creating silver jewellery for over 12 years Deanne uses only siver wire and small tools to create completely unique wire sculpture jewellery, using twists and swirls to shape and forge the wire and to then encase gems within it. There is no soldering needed! Deanne is now an international seller, including sales online, at craft fayres, wedding and trade fayres, and also galleries. She has set up a Wire Jewellery School, empowering other people to have a go and to give them the opportunity to learn to create their own beautiful jewellery, using the same techniques that she fell in love with. There are many different workshops and courses, providing the knowledge and physical skills needed to create different styles of jewellery, from beginners to master classes. As well as a passion for jewellery making, for 20 years Deanne has
worked with people with various disabilities in many settings and is currently a SEN Activity Coordinator with qualifications and experience in ASD, sensory processing disorder, challenging behaviour, PMLD, teaching and much more. "Recently, I have put my two passions together using my qualifications and experience in teaching to create Inclusive and accessible jewellery making workshops for all," Deanne explains, 'This makes sensory jewellery making a fun and therapeutic activity for all individuals, irrespective of their age, or ability.' She believes that there are not enough activities out there like jewellery making for people with disabilities to enjoy alongside their peers and siblings. 'My aim is to create a fun and dynamic environment that everyone can enjoy together!'

Seventies style
is never out of fashion… I love the start of the new fashion season - and especially autumn/winter. It’s my favourite time to year to dress for - colours become a little more muted, fabrics more robust and silhouettes more structured. One style which I go back to every autumn is a seventies vibe, and this year it’s also a key trend - although I think it’s pretty timeless. You don’t have to re-create a full on Charlie’s Angels look - this is less fancy dress and more of a contemporary nod to the style - the key is to stick to elements which give a flavour of the era whilst allowing you to wear them - not the other way around. So, what pieces do you go for and how do you wear them? Well, I’d say the key items to channel this look are an A-Line skirt, preferably midi length, (denim, suede, cord or leather are particularly fab), a belted denim dress, knee high stack heeled boots and some jeans or trousers with a slight flare to the hem. There are lots of other items which can be worn with a 70s vibe, the classic trench coat, a floaty midi dress,
polo necks, anything in cord, and jumpsuits (if you have a zip front and a belt you’ve nailed it!). It’s actually very easy to achieve. You’ll see from the pictures some examples of how I style this look. I like to wear a floral midi dress with a fine knit polo neck underneath and a pair of knee boots, or some high waisted flared jeans with a fitted tee or sweater tucked in. Add your trench or a fitted blazer over the top of either outfit when you need the extra layer, and wear your bag cross body style. An A-line skirt looks fabulous with a pussy bow blouse tucked in, or paired with that staple polo neck, and worn with the knee boots. So, you’ve survived the holidays, the kids have started, or are back, at school/nursery and you find yourself able to have a moment to think about your own needs again after neglecting them for the entire summer. What’s first on your agenda?
time for you
In my experience, September is a peak time for many mums to start looking in to committing to something for themselves or making changes, particularly from a fitness perspective. If this resonates with you, then here are some tips to give you the best possible chance at reaching your goals: Choose something you enjoy - Although my work as a personal trainer requires me to be in the gym most days, I also understand that the gym isn’t for everyone. Ultimately, if you don’t enjoy what you are doing or have someone there to encourage you to stick with it, experience tells me that you are going to stop. Whether it’s a dance class, trampolining, boxing or running, picking something you want to do, will make you less likely to want to skip it. Get active with a friend - Exercising with a friend can help to keep things fun and can also be excellent for motivation. Its great to have someone spurring you on and vice versa and can increase your chances of sticking to your fitness plan. Make it routine - Creating a new habit can be hard work, in fact I could write a whole article on this subject alone! However, by incorporating a particular task in to your daily routine, you will be surprised how quickly it can become a really good habit that you actually begin to crave. For example, take the kids to school dressed in your gym kit and exercise straight after the school run. Another idea, could be to set your alarm 20 minutes early in order to get up and do a circuit before your day would normally start. Start small - I see so many people make the mistake of biting off more than they can chew. They throw themselves into an exercise regime every single day for a week or two, end up tired and sore and unable to keep up the momentum alongside their busy lives and then feel like a failure when they miss a day and then stop all together. Be realistic. What amount of time per week can you commit to reaching your fitness goals? What days work best for you around your other commitments and responsibilities? What time of day suits you best? Once you answer these questions, you are better prepared to come up with a plan that will work for you. I hope these tips help however, if you are still struggling on where to begin or require more motivation then get in touch…they don’t call me Miss Motivator for nothing ;-)

After having gone through some tough times I really needed help sleeping, I don’t like taking medication if I can help it, so I decided to try meditation. I immediately slept a bit better that night and it just got better and better, from that day onwards I was convinced…. meditation was good for me. Being a bit of a geek, I started to investigate why it works, reading up on how it positively affects the brain, and I stumbled across mindfulness, immediately bought a book off Amazon, and I was hooked. That was around 6 years
ago now and it’s been a great journey, so much so that I am now launching my own business to teach mindfulness. I want to help two groups of people that are close to my heart; mums and businesses. The MamaKind Club is a monthly membership for mums to conveniently bring the classes to them wherever and whenever they choose. As busy mums it is sometimes hard to get out at a certain time of day, but our mental health is so important, I wanted to ensure I could help as many mums as possible, so I brought it all online. As well as the mindfulness teaching there is lots of other support, Q&A sessions, special offers and a community to make new friends too. The BusinessKind Club is focussed on mindfulness for the workplace. Having worked my way up the career ladder, in different environments and now managing three teams of people, I have come to realise that my mindfulness practice has had a positive impact on how I manage my relationships, and my mindset at work. I want to help others with this too, as there seems to be a distinct lack of compassion but a high amount of stress and demand in most workplaces today.

ulness I’m so excited to be welcomed to Your Scene magazine and share my tips with you each month for mindful living. My name is Amy Polly, I’m 35, and have an 11-month-old baby boy called Jackson. I am a qualified mindfulness teacher and speaker, as well as being a fully qualified accountant. I love chocolate, long walks, cooking and singing (not professionally, I mean alone in my car, because let’s face it I’m awful, but I love it).
Do you ever feel overwhelmed, stressed, like your mind never stops, or you’d just like to find your own slice of calm? Then this is for you! "What on earth is mindfulness?' I hear you say.
What can you start to do today?
A definition of mindfulness is “bringing your awareness to the present moment whilst accepting your thoughts and feelings with no judgement”. And yes, it does take some practise, but if you think about it like this; you are aware all the time, you can’t switch that off, just try not to be aware, you can’t do it. So this means mindfulness is something that you can enjoy. It’s all about where you focus your awareness. We are on autopilot most of the time, doing more than one thing at once, worrying about the past or future and not truly living in the moment. Our primitive mind in this modern world struggles to deal with what we see as threats, such as a post on Facebook or a person at work. They can trigger the same fight or
Head to YouTube and search for mindfulness meditations and find some that you like. Meditation is an important part of mindfulness as this is a time where you can really practice resting your mind and accepting your thoughts. Mindful living is all about incorporating mindfulness into your everyday tasks. I have included a checklist for you to cut out and keep. Set your intention at the start of the day to do some of these things, or think of your own, and re-visit the list at the end of the day to see how you got on. The key is to use as many of your five senses as possible to be truly in the moment. For example, if you are making a cup of tea really focus on the touch of the spoon and the cup, the sound of the water pouring and the spoon clinking, the smell of the

flight response as a tiger would have activated in a cave person. This means that we are regularly flooded with adrenaline and cortisol, which can then have a physical affect on our body too. Science based research tells us that mindfulness, including meditation, can positively affect the brain. Mindfulness has been shown to effectively relieve and prevent stress as well as increase focus and productivity.

tea, the sight of the steam and finally the taste. You won’t always use all five senses but try to use a many as possible. Walking is another great mindful practice as you can pay attention to your feet on the floor and your body moving, but also the sights and sounds around you. If your mind starts to wander, that’s ok, but as soon as you notice, bring your attention right back to your mindful practice.
Remember to have fun and I’ll see you next month!

Peterborough Slimmers Celebrating Success! Members of the Slimming World groups in the Ortons are celebrating the fact that so far this year they have lost over 400 stone between them (5,600 lbs)! Their proud consultant, Helen Johns, who runs the groups at Herlington Preschool and Matley Community Centre says “I am so proud of all of my members, every week they strive for a healthier future and the care and support they show each other is a vital part of their success”. “With over 65% of adults in Peterborough either overweight or obese” Helen continues “it is so important that we can support as many people as possible locally to lead a healthier lifestyle. I am confident that with Slimming World’s generous, flexible and delicious food optimising plan, where nothing is banned and the support of the group and myself, we can help more people achieve their weight loss dreams far easier than they ever imagined”. One member who is celebrating great success is Louise Witten.
Louise joined Helen’s group in August 2018 and since then has gone on to lose an amazing 5 stone 9 lbs. Louise says “Before I joined Slimming World I was very unhappy with my weight and how I looked, I had lost my confidence and found myself sitting on the side-lines at gatherings and parties as I was too embarrassed to get up and dance. I am so delighted with the progress I have made with Helen’s and the groups’ support that I now love nothing better than clothes shopping, socialising and cannot wait to go on holiday as the new, slimmer me”. Knees Up! From the outside the knee looks fairly simple: a hinge to let the bottom part of the leg move back and forth, in a similar manner to the way a door might open. Inside though the mechanism is rather more complex The knee consists of two separate joints: one between the thigh and calf bones—the main joint around which most of the movement occurs; and a second between the thighbone and the kneecap. In addition, the superficially simple hinge-like motion turns out to involve gliding and rotation too. The knee cap (patella) is a disclike bone embedded within the tendons around the knee. Its job is to protect the knee joint against any front-on injury, and to spread the force of any impact. When the leg is straightened the kneecap should press back into a special groove in the thigh-bone. This stops it from dislocating. The thigh muscles are key to maintaining knee stability. The quadriceps are the largest of the muscle groups and (as the name suggests) consist of four muscles. They straighten the leg at the knee. The hamstrings connect the thigh bone to the calf bones. They bend and rotate the leg, control
deceleration and help the foot to land smoothly. Our hips and knees are the main weight-bearing joints in our body. The knees are most vulnerable to injury because the weight of the upper body is conducted and amplified by the thigh bones. Because the centre of gravity of humans is located around our navel, the distance between this point and a knee acts as a lever, magnifying the effects of gravity on our knees as we walk to four or five times our actual bodyweight. This means that relatively small increase in our weight can have a disproportionately catastrophic effect on our poor knee joints! Excess weight accounts for around half of all operations carried out to repair the cartilage in the knee and dramatically increases the risk the of developing osteoarthritis. So, keeping our weight down is important, but so is exercise. Simple knee extensions which can be carried out slowly, sitting in a
By Louise Addison straight-backed chair are good, as are straight leg lifts which should be carried out while lying face up on a mat. To balance the opposing muscle groups, try hamstring curls, carried out while lying face down on the mat. Ankle weights can be used to increase the intensity of the exercise. It’s essential to check with your health care practitioner before starting an exercise regime if you have never exercised before. Unfortunately knee injuries are common. Mostly a period of rest, ice, compression and elevation (RICE) will improve matters.
Seek medical advice after two weeks if: There is still pain. You’re still limping. You can see or feel a deformity around the knee area. There is numbness or tingling in the knee, lower leg or foot. Seek advice immediately if: The lower leg or foot feels cold and turns blue. The lower leg or foot feels hot and turns red. The knee pain is accompanied by weakness, sickness or fever.

Life at Cathedral Green Court I recently spent a lovely morning at Cathedral Green Court chatting about life at the Court over coffee with some of the owners From the moment I walked into the Court, the community spirit was so obvious. There was a group of people enjoying the morning sunshine in the lounge, chatting and drinking coffee. I signed the visitors' book and was offered a drink and a seat with the group. People were coming in and out, going about their daily life, everyone saying 'good morning' and passing the time of day, I can honestly say they all had smiles on their faces. Alex Thomson, 89, has lived in Cathedral Green Court for seven years. Alex moved back to the UK after living in Spain with his late wife. Alex moved into his now home within two months. Alex said, “He settled in quite quickly”. The move made sense to him because his family lives nearby and it’s a convenient city centre location. Alex spoke proudly of his new home.
“As soon as I saw the apartment, I liked it being so light with big windows”. The community at Cathedral Green Court makes living there for Alex a good thing; “I’ve got some good neighbours; we go out in the week for lunch” Staff are available24/7 at Cathedral Green Court, as Alex says “The staff are very helpful, particularly the duty manager” Cathedral Green Court can take care of everything. They have weekly menus. Alex tell us that he eats there every day, except when he goes out. Living at the Court can provide the answer for some retired homeowners who are at that stage of their life when they begin to seek a more convenient way of living, without giving up or jeopardising their independence.

LEGAL Cut Time, Cut Costs If your assets are limited and you’re lucky enough to be able to communicate successfully with your separated spouse, you may quite easily be able to agree terms for a financial settlement It is always advisable to obtain a clean break financial order after divorce, which you file at court after decree nisi without attending any hearing. You will need the help of a family lawyer to do this, but if you and your spouse have already done the groundwork, the costs should be minimal. The peace of mind for both of you knowing that there can be no further comeback in respect of finances, will be worth the investment. Once you move into the territory of disputed finances and complexity of assets, which could include properties, businesses and pensions, both of you should instruct your own family solicitor and try and reach a negotiated settlement. Using the services of a mediator along the way often assists.
If all attempts at reaching an agreement break down, you are faced with a court application, escalating legal costs and a very long wait for a court hearing. An alternative to this frustrating process, is to take control of the costs and the court timetable and instruct your own private Judge to conduct a financial dispute resolution. The Judge will normally be an experienced barrister who may also sit as a Deputy Judge in the Family Court. This may sound expensive, but as proceedings are accelerated by many months, it is likely to cost less than the traditional procedure and greatly lower stress levels. Discuss the private FDR option with your solicitor if you think it could help your case.

Financial planning… The Liberty Difference A new client is someone who typically has been introduced to us by an existing client and they have a need to talk to someone about a financial matter such as their pension or how they can create an investment We sometimes call this ‘the messy part’, anxiety levels may be riding high and confidence levels sometimes low, it can all appear to be quite daunting! Quickly they will settle in, it is the same as any new relationship where we get to know each other, and naturally confidence levels grow, and anxiety subsides. Immediately the conversation will be broadened out into sometimes seemingly unrelated matters. We will be thorough and clear with you and if you do not understand these often complex matters then we will be patient, recap and explain again in terms that you understand. A pension or investment is simply a vehicle to enable you to plan in a particular way, they tell us little though about your hopes and dreams, your family life, health
circumstances and objectives for the future. This to us is all critical in our role as financial planners, we have to get to know you and to understand you in order to help build a plan for your future. We are confident that you will enjoy the process and that you will find it rewarding. We will get quickly through the messy part and we will work with you over the long term to help keep your plan on track. You will be given all the support you need, and you will understand all that we will do for you…. Yes, we promise you will understand it all, even the complicated bits! So, take a moment to reflect on your own finances, what are your priorities? What direction are they heading in? If you are still not sure then perhaps it is time to start creating your own financial plan.
We are certain we can help. For your free initial discussion please contact our office on 01778 342291.

The D Word
Only 10% Of Brits have Planned for Death New research has revealed only 10% have planned for their end of life which suggests there is still a huge stigma surrounding death in the UK With death potentially causing financial catastrophes as well as grief, breaking the taboo around confronting death is still a big issue among Brits.
“We all need to start talking about the D word." According to Sue Ryder Charity, out of 2,002 people who were surveyed 68% of respondents do not have a Will and 70% have not even talked to their loved ones about dying. Furthermore, it was found in the Sue Ryder Charity’s study that
67% did not realise they could document where they wish to die in a specific location. Shockingly, only 10% of people surveyed had begun or completed planning for their death.
