City charity wins a national Green Apple Award The independent charity Peterborough Environment City Trust (PECT) is delighted to have won a nationally recognised Green Apple Award for Environmental Best Practice, which was awarded for its annual Green Festival. “We are absolutely delighted to win a prestigious Green Apple Award,” explains PECT’s Communities Team Leader Karen Igho. “It is a fantastic accolade for Peterborough’s Green Festival and an endorsement of all the hard work put in to making the Festival a huge success.” The Peterborough Green Festival is one of the biggest and longest running environmental festivals in the UK, and the 2015 event was the most successful to date! Overall the Festival attracted more than 10,000 participants and worked together with 38 partner organisations across the city and surrounding areas. Funded by Travelchoice and the Arts Council, the festival’s theme this year was sustainable transport. The aim was to inspire people to take positive action through active participation in Green Festival events

and by pledging to make changes for a greener, cleaner city. The 2015 Green Festival demonstrated a unique ability to showcase sustainability issues in new and innovative ways, using locally commissioned artworks to engage with a wider audience and get everyone talking about their impact on the environment. The Green Festival was also selected as one of only six European Green Week fringe events happening in the UK, putting Peterborough on the map for environmental issues. The Green Apple Award will be presented at The Houses of Parliament, Westminster Palace in London in November. For more information about PECT’s work, visit the website and sign up to the free e-newsletter.

Completed wall at Stanground

Stanground to Ball Bridge Construction of the wall and the bank works in this area is complete. The grass seeding will commence in this area late September. The grass coverage plays an integral part of the stability of the bank and the grass seed needs time to establish. Therefore, the bank will remain cordoned off until December 2016. This section of the bank will also be managed with sheep grazing by North Level District Internal Drainage Board. www.gov.uk/environment.agency

Greetings from Cardea

Kate Ferris

What a busy time of year this is! I’m sure we’re all up to our ears in preparations for Christmas ... children’s school plays and end of term parties, hunting down that special gift, organising the family get together, office parties, wrapping presents, sourcing all the ingredients for the Christmas dinner, making nativity costumes ...the list of chores and events in December goes on and on doesn’t it?

W

hile it’s a wonderful time of year, I hope that we can all manage to stop for a breather and remember the true meaning of this festival. In the spirit of Christmas, maybe offer some goodwill to those less fortunate than ourselves, drop by on an elderly neighbour and share a cuppa or donate something to the local food bank (as we always buy far too much food in December), or maybe invite someone who lives alone to share a meal. We have plenty going on in Cardea; the youth club is proving to be very popular, the kids will be enjoying a Christmas party and the school is holding it’s Christmas carols evening on the 16th. Last year, the children of Cardea must have been very good indeed as we had a special visit from Father Christmas who drove around the streets just to check up on everybody and note down names in his special book. His helpers gave out sweets and brought smiles to everyone’s faces. I wonder if they’ve all been good enough for a return visit. Let’s hope so!

As the year draws to a close, it’s time to look back on our achievements, which include the youth club, football league matches on our playing fields, the building work beginning on our community pavilion, the family events of summer and the Easter Egg Hunt. It’s also time to look forward to 2016 and all the fresh challenges it will bring; it’s amazing what can happen in a year! Our community continues to grow daily and on behalf of myself and the Cardea Residents’ Association, I would like to wish everyone a very merry Christmas and a happy, healthy new year!

More first responders are needed.

Cardea First Response Team

T

he Cardea First Response Team thoroughly enjoy being there for the local community, attending on average 4 callouts each week. On some occasions they respond to the emergency before the ambulance crew and are fast becoming a familiar presence in the area, ready to reassure and help as much as they can before the ambulance crew arrive. The team now have a total of 7 responders in Cardea, working all round the clock so that cover is available up to 5 days a week. Charlotte Hamilton, Alex Burch and Kelvin Newton have now been joined by more responders including, Toni Cray, Michelle Giarrusso and Fay Rumball. The team would like to welcome them and

thank them for their time and passion, and to let the community know that they are doing a fantastic job! More First Responders are needed, particulary in the old Stanground area, ideally Coneygree Road and Fletton, which will help widen the cover in these areas. Those who live in old Stanground can volunteer to get to the emergency more promptly. If anyone is interested in becoming a first responder and can spare up to 4 hours a week attending to emergencies in the community, if you are compassionate, reliable and care about your community, The Cardea Response Team, would love to hear from you.

This year has been very rewarding for the Cardea First Response Team

Raising funds for Age Concern Team ‘Safe Local Trades’ has raised over £6,000 for Age UK Peterborough - a total of over £31,000 since 2009!

E

ach year, Peterborough-based Safe Local Trades organise fund-raising events for their chosen charity Age UK Peterborough. This year, they had volunteers getting muddy and wet in the Insane Terrain obstacle course; some hauled themselves out of a plane at 13,000 feet; and many others kept their feet firmly on the ground by taking part in the Great Eastern Run.

Once again Eileen and her team of dedicated volunteers have exceeded our expectations by presenting us with a cheque for £6,045, a huge sum of money that will help us to make a big difference to the quality of life for many older people in Peterborough. On behalf of the Age UK Peterborough team, I pass on our most sincere thanks to Eileen and everyone who took part in the events. David Bache, Chief Executive of Age UK Peterborough All events were an overall success and the organiser, Eileen Le Voi, owner of Safe Local Trades, said, “We would like to thank each and every volunteer who took part, and to everyone who sponsored them in their events, all of which helped to raise an amazing £6,045 for this very worthy local charity”.

We are also grateful to the publishers of Stanground Gazette - I am always pleasantly surprised to hear from you in response to something you’ve read in the Gazette - great job editors, keeping the community connected! Christmas is all about getting connected, not just with one another, but also with God. At Christmas God reaches out to human beings in Jesus Christ, who came to live among us, as one of us, to show us our Father’s love. It is summed up beautifully in the Bible where we read, ‘You know the grace shown by our Lord Jesus Christ. Even though he was rich, he became poor to help you. Because he became poor, you can become rich.’ Jesus invites us to come to him to discover for ourselves the spiritual riches of God. Wow, some Christmas present!

COMMUNITY NEWS FINANCIAL

MONEY MATTERS

by Pete Bird, Bird & Laws Certified Public Accountants

Do you have any tax or business questions? If so email Pete Bird of Bird & Laws info@birdandlaws.co.uk and if of general interest we will publish them here.

Question: I am a self employed plumber and would like to attend a refresher course to update and reinforce my skills. I am also considering attending a course to train as an electrician to expand my business. Would the costs of these courses be allowable for tax purposes and reduce my taxable profits?

Winter wildlife in Stanground with the Wildlife Trust Have you visited either of the Wildlife Trust’s two local nature reserves; Stanground Wash or Stanground Newt Ponds?

Answer: For training costs to be allowable, they must be incurred wholly and exclusively for the purposes of the trade. The course undertaken to update your skills in plumbing would be allowable as it is updating your skills for the trade you are currently undertaking. This cost would then be deducted from your business profits. The training costs for the electrician’s course however would not be allowable. The benefits obtained from this course gives you a new skill and as such a new specialisation within your trade. It is therefore not incurred wholly and exclusively for the purposes of your trade.

Landlords Income tax is only payable on rental profits. Owners of rental properties can claim a significant amount of tax deductible expenditure, thereby reducing their rental profits. Tax deductions can currently be claimed such as, mortgage interest, repairs, letting agent fees, insurance, a 10% wear and tear allowance, Home Office expenses, travel and subsistence costs, spending on equipment used in the business and motoring costs.

Future Landlord Tax Changes Significant changes were announced in the July 2015 Budget: The wear and tear allowance is to be abolished. From 6 April 2016 onwards, landlords will only be able to claim the actual cost of replacing furnishings.

Interest & Finance Costs In utter defiance of the basic principles under which businesses are taxed, the government has decided to restrict tax relief for interest and finance costs paid by individual landlords who own residential properties. The new rules will not apply to commercial property or furnished holiday lettings. They will also not apply to properties held inside companies. The proposal is to phase out higher-rate tax relief for interest and finance costs over a four year period commencing in 2017/18.

tanground Wash is at the end of North Street, and just up from Thistle Drive off Wessex Close. Sandwiched between the Peterborough to March railway line and Back River, this 26 hectare floodwater wetland nature reserve is important for the winter wader birds it supports, as well as rare wetland plants and insects. The network of deep and shallow ditches host rare beetles and, along the southern margin of the reserve, the river contains nationally scarce plants such as fringed water-lily and grasswrack pondweed, and spined-loach, a rare European fish. The Trust has been improving the ditch system on the reserve recently to make it

wetter for longer to help support the wildlife which relies on this kind of increasingly rare habitat. At this time of year some of the winter birds to be seen are redshank, snipe and sandpiper, many of which may have flown in from as far as Iceland for the less harsh British winter. Enjoy this lovely wildlife on your doorstep and maybe even catch a glimpse of a peregrine falcon flying overhead. The reserve is open access; visit all year free of charge, information is displayed at the entrance to the site. Stanground Newt Ponds is a tiny reserve, off Buntings Lane, a breeding site and refuge for great crested newts.

COMMUNITY CONSUMER ADVICE NEWS

Goods tidings we bring, to you and your things ... Faulty goods, misleading claims and substandard services mean Christmas presents fly back onto the shelves in January, according to new figures from Citizens Advice.

A TS

CO

IN

MPLA

The 5 most complained about personal goods in the East of England January 2015 were:

 Laptops, notebooks and tablet PCs  Women’s clothing  TVs  Toys  Jewellery

nalysis by the charity shows that people from the East of England are more likely to call its consumer helpline with complaints about items such as beauty treatments, toys and jewellery in January than any other time of year. Overall, complaints about these goods more than doubled in comparison to the rest of the year, with a rise of 132%. The findings come as Citizens Advice, the Department of Business, Innovation and Skills, and Central Trading Standards Institute launch National Consumer Week today. Citizens Advice Peterborough is urging people to get to know their consumer rights as Christmas shopping gets underway. The service is highlighting how the new Consumer Rights Act, brought into effect on 1 October, can help people to shop with confidence and get their money back when things go wrong.

Complaints were most likely to be about defective goods, or misleading claims and descriptions about their purchase. Keith Jones, Chief Executive of Citizens advice Peterborough said: “Many families save up for their Christmas shopping and it can be a real disappointment when their purchase isn’t up to scratch. Time and again we see people stuck with faulty or substandard products struggling to get their money back. We’re encouraging people to do their homework before they start their Christmas shop, so they know what their rights are and what they can do when things go wrong.” Citizens Advice Peterborough is sharing a ‘Know Your Rights’ guide explaining the big changes to consumer law that Christmas shoppers should know.

 Anyone who needs advice on goods and services they’ve purchased can call the Citizens Advice Consumer Service on 03454 04 05 06, or go online at www.citizensadvice.org.uk.

COMMUNITY NEWS

After a long and often stressful 5 year journey to get football played on the Cardea playing fields, Park Farm Pumas recently received an early Christmas present. Peterborough City Council took possession of the land at Cardea playing fields and through a working relationship with Pumas have kitted the field out with a full size pitch, two 7v7 mini soccer pitches, new mini soccer goals and 11v11 goals as well!

Stanground Sports FC Stanground Sports FC hosted a very well attended Family Halloween Party on 30 November in The Back Room at The Heron, Stanground to raise funds for the club.

I

t was fabulous to see so many children dressed up and enjoying themselves with their teammates. Even the coaches were in fancy dress, which added to the enjoyment for the children! It was great to see other children from the local area join in too, those who aren’t involved with the club, as yet… Watch this space for news on our fundraising events for the upcoming year; we are hoping to make it a fun filled, packed events’ calendar, with parties, race nights and maybe even a casino night. All funds raised are put to good use, as they help maintain our current equipment, allow us to purchase new equipment and look after our facilities. We have teams ranging from aged 4, all the way to adulthood. All the younger teams are mixed, so if your son or daughter would like to come down for a kick about, drop the club secretary an email at meri@heronpub.co.uk and she’ll put you in touch with the correct coach for your age group. Everybody is welcome!

Pumas’ new lair is an early Christmas present

P

umas U9 blacks played the first ever match on the new pitches; it was a fabulous game, marking the occasion with the style it deserved by putting in a great performance, culminating in a great win. Thus begins a new journey for Pumas at Cardea, and one that has continued over the last couple of months with all our U9 (Blacks, Reds & Blues), U10 and U13 teams having great performances and results at their new Pumas’ lair. The Cardea Community Sports Association (CCSA) will take ongoing operational control of the playing fields and the new pavilion building which, I take great pleasure in saying, has begun its build. A new building will be in place by spring of 2016 and working alongside our partners & local community groups Pumas will well and truly take its place in our new home at Cardea. I would like to thank the

members of the Pumas’ committee & management and the committee of the CCSA for all their support in making this happen. There is still much to do, but finally we are there! A huge sense of achievement and a hearty ‘well done’ to all concerned, but we won’t be resting on our laurels. As always, Pumas, working with our partners, sponsors and supporters will seek to provide the best quality facilities and coaching possible for our players. You can help – we need Year 6 or 7 players, keen to join our U12 side and we are also looking for new coaches and sponsors all the time - if you want to get involved please contact our chairman Ciaran McAuley on 07713106898 or Google Park Farm Pumas. With your help, who knows where this drive, teamwork and togetherness will take us over the next 5 years ... did someone say a 3G floodlit pitch? ... let’s wait and see! #gopumas

Five Minutes Peace

MUST READ children’s books

The Peanuts Movie Book

Snoopy & Charlie Brown: A Peanuts Movie is a great way for children to get to know the loveable characters of the Peanuts gang. Based on the hotly anticipated 3D movie releasing in November 2015, this illustrated novel is packed with the trademark Peanuts humour that fans old and new are sure to love. The film is written by a top team including Charles M. Schulz’s son and grandson. It will be the Peanuts gang’s debut in 3D, and promises laugh-outloud fun for all the family. Good grief!

Twenty Four Days to Christmas

By Fred Arthur Poppy is in agony - it is the First of December and she has twenty-four days to wait until Christmas and she is convinced that she will not be able to contain her excitement and impatience: How can she possibly wait so long for Santa to arrive? Poppy’s parents put their heads together and come up with a cunning plan that has Poppy completing a different, Christmas themed activity every day, to keep Her busy until Christmas (and Santa) finally arrives.

By Jill Murphy This is the story of Mrs Large the elephant - who just needs five minutes of peace and quiet away from her boisterous children! So, taking refuge in the bathroom, she fills herself a hot, foamy bubble bath and takes in a tray of her favourite breakfast and the morning paper. But there’s never a dull moment with the Larges, and it soon becomes clear that mum’s quiet time is to be very short-lived! Family life is beautifully observed in this warm and funny modern classic from Jill Murphy, one of Britain’s most treasured author-illustrators.

Star Wars Before the awakening

By Greg Rucka It’s no secret that Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ plot is being kept heavily under wraps. Most of the story, except for bits and pieces here and there, remains a mystery. One of the biggest mysteries rests with the three new stars of the Sequel Trilogy. Who are Rey, Finn, and Poe Dameron?

The Dinosaur that pooped Christmas By Tom Fletcher and Dougie Poynter Danny wants everything for Christmas. But what he gets is a dinosaur, a very hungry dinosaur. Danny’s new dino eats up all of Christmas, but as we all know, what goes in must come out . . . Danny is about to have the most EXPLOSIVE Christmas of his life!

COMMUNITY PETS’ PATCH NEWS

Your Pet’s Paradise With the end of the year fast approaching it won’t be long before we all start to turn our minds towards going on holiday and getting away from it all. Whether the cold weather makes you plan for a sunny getaway or you just fancy a weekend away from it all, what to do with our dogs while we’re away is an issue for many of us.

T

hankfully, local business, Your Pet’s Paradise, provides the perfect answer. They have people in and around the area who take your dog into their home while you’re away (known as ‘holiday homes’). They match your dog to the right home for them and you are able to visit the holiday home beforehand to make sure you and your dog are happy and to put your mind at rest. All of Your Pet’s Paradise’s Holiday Homes are owned by dog lovers who are around most of the day. Some have dogs of their own, others don’t, but either way it’s only ever your dog on holiday with that home at that time, so your dog gets all the love and attention they need. From day care, to weekends away, to full holidays, Your Pet’s Paradise aims to fulfil all of your and your dog’s needs. They also always try to encourage each dog to stay at the same holiday home whenever you go away, so that they build up a good relationship with them.

PETS’ PATCH

Separation anxiety in dogs

HELPFUL

TIPS Before you go for a longer period try these tips:

Some dogs love us too much. There are lots of reasons why they show behavioural problems when left alone. Young dogs that have not been taught to be left alone can exhibit continuous barking, digging or chewing household items – and in more extreme cases urinating and fouling in the house. By Suzhy Winifield RVN

R

escue dogs are particularly prone to this behaviour as they fear a repeat of their history when they may have been left alone for prolonged periods and unsure of the greeting they will get upon your return. There are a number of things you can do to help. First you must try and teach your puppy or dog that they can tolerate planned and short periods without you. Leave your dog in a room that they are used to and normally left

in, close the door and walk away. Not more than five minutes later return to the room – without over fussing the dog. This will show the dog that it is perfectly normal for you to not be there all the time. Repeat this exercise several times through the day gradually extending the time you are absent from the room. If your dog starts to bark, cry, scratches at the door or has chewed something when you return, leave for a shorter period

next time and then try increasing it again. Once you have reached 30 minutes when the dog has tolerated being left then you can step up to actually leaving the house. When you have established that the dog is tolerating your absence you can extend the period of time you are away but always remember to leave the dog in the same room with restricted access to the rest of the house.

 Take the dog/s for a nice long walk or a good play session well before you plan to leave. This will ensure that they have had time to settle down and are not all excited and hyper from the exercise  Don’t make a big thing of leaving the house – if you don’t say a big ‘goodbye’ when you leave the house this will reduce the dogs mental awareness of you not being there  Feed your dog a small meal a short time before you leave – this can make your dog more relaxed and sleepy  Make sure that the room you leave your dog in is safe! If they are going to exhibit destructive behaviour in the initial days then ensure no electrical cables, poisonous plants or valuable items are within their reach.

Merry Christmas to all our customers!

Quiz supplied by Bill Turnball

T

he law has tried in many ways over the years to deal with this situation and remind parents that even though they are separated they both jointly remain the parents of the children and should co-parent. The court will presume, unless it is shown to be unsafe for the child, that involvement of both parents in a child’s life will benefit their welfare long term. The court’s paramount consideration in any matter relating to a child will be the child’s welfare now and in the future. Parental responsibility means the legal rights, duties, powers, responsibilities and authority a parent has for the child and the child’s property. Since December 2004 all fathers automatically have parental responsibility, in addition to the mother, so long as they are married or named on the child’s birth certificate. If this does not apply to you then you can acquire parental responsibility by marrying the child’s mother; by both signing a parental responsibility agreement; or by order of the court. If you have parental responsibility you are automatically entitled to be involved in any important decisions relating to your child’s upbringing. This does not mean that you get to decide what they do on a day-to-day basis when they are with the other parent (or vice versa), but that you are automatically entitled to be involved in decisions relating to important matters such as education, medical care, religion and name changes. You are equally entitled to discuss your child’s welfare with their school and/or GP, with our without the other parent’s express agreement. If your former partner is not allowing you to be involved in decisions relating to your child’s upbringing or not allowing you to spend time with your child then you can take action to resolve this. The best way is always to try to communicate with the other parent to see if you can reach an agreement. As your child’s parents you two know better than anyone what is best for your child. However if communication has broken down and an agreement cannot be reached then a Resolution accredited lawyer may be able to assist you to negotiate an agreement fairly and amicably via correspondence and this is the best way to resolve matters so you get to spend time with your child quickly. Unfortunately agreement is not always possible and the next steps would be to consider mediation – where both you and your former partner sit down together with an independent mediator to discuss matters and see what agreement can be reached and court proceedings as a last resort.

Cosmic Katie‘ s Stars COMMUNITY NEWS

December 2015

By Katie Lancashire, Clairvoyant and Astrologer

Libra September 24-October 23 Venus enters Scorpio on the 4th, and you enter far too many stores; in addition to holiday shopping you’re determined to treat yourself to something special. Avoid getting drawn into family conflict mid-month, chose to remain neutral. Romance blooms on the 28th.

Scorpio October 24-November 22 If your love life has felt stale or non-existent, expect excitement after the 8th when Venus is with you; alike minds meet and sparks begin to fly. Pressure and deadlines at work could leave you feeling drained and fraught, delegate where possible and stop overloading your to do list.

Sagittarius November 23-December 21 Future plans are under the microscope from the middle of the month and you won’t make compromises. If a relationship or partnership has reached stale mate, then it’s time to look at things objectively and if necessary, sever ties, in order to free up your time both mentally and physically.

Capricorn December 22-January 20 Venus is in Scorpio from the 4th and you will find yourself in demand for social opportunities with you friends, so update your wardrobe and get ready to dazzle. The sun enters your sign on the 21st and launches a new year of goals, triumphs and excitement. Aquarius January 21-February 19 You will be able to end the year on a very happy note, thanks to Venus who, together with Scorpio allows you to wrap up 2015 with a promotion or pay rise. Expect to tackle some tricky emotional issues, but by doing so, you will make room for new and exciting people to come into your life.

Pisces February 20-March 20 A work associate could be trying to mislead you this month, use your X-ray vision to understand this person and their motives better. A relationship grows closer and more passionate as the festivities evolve, and you could find yourselves making last minute plans for a New Year getaway.

Leo July 24-August 23

A remark made this month could be just the spur you need to turn things around and get your act together. This has been a year of self discovery both professionally and emotionally, before the year is out you will see exactly how far you have come and the strength you now possess.

Virgo August 24-September 23 As the festive season gets in to full swing, don’t be surprised when you start to see clearly exactly who is there for you and who isn’t. Family tensions may rear their head again putting you under pressure, don’t be naive to underhand behaviour.

If your birthday is this month Early in the month make sure that someone hasn’t dropped the ball and that all your expected projects are firmly on track, as an oversight now will be costly. You have finally turned an important corner in your life and accomplished things you never thought possible. Accept festive invitations and celebrate, you deserve it.

COMMUNITY NEWS CONSUMER ADVICE

You gotta stop a pickpocket or two ...

by Eileen Le Voi

Now that the busy Christmas period is fast approaching, please be aware that cases of pick pocketing always increase at this time of the year, so don’t be a victim.

Keep purses secure and carry wallets in an inside pocket. Zip up hand and shoulder bags. Carry bags in front of you with flaps against your body. Keep straps short and bags tucked under your arm. Don't show your money - keep it safely in your pocket and when using the ATM, always ensure that your money has been secured in your purse or wallet before turning away. Here are several tactics that pickpockets use:

The Helpful Stranger:

Someone may approach you and say that you have something on your jacket or coat and will automatically rub it off, allowing them to get close to you The Hugger Mugger: a stranger may pretend to be sociable and friendly and will put their arms around you or link their arm through yours with a view to picking your pockets

The Easy Dip:

Pickpockets will be watching and if your bag or backpack is left open, they may follow you until they get the opportunity to dip in and remove easy items that are on show

The Distraction: typically

Using a map, a stranger may ask you for directions and whilst you are pointing out directions on the map, another person will carry out the pickpocket whilst you are distracted

The Stall:

As a lot of pickpockets work in pairs, they will identify their victim and one person will deliberately stand in front you, at a counter, getting on a train or bus etc., and will stall for some reason - the other person is directly behind the victim allowing them to get up close to carry out the crime.

Remember to be extra vigilant in crowded shops and whilst in queues. The Concealed Hand:

Pickpockets often use items such as a newspaper to cover their hand whilst they carry out the crime Remember to be extra vigilant in crowded shops and whilst in queues. Wishing you all a safe and Happy Christmas from Safe Local Trades.
