WELCOME Hello and happy new year to you all. We hope you had a fantastic Christmas! It's great to hear that local people helped to raise over £6,000 for the young homeless at its inaugural ‘Sleep Easy’ event at the end of 2016. As we start the new year, perhaps we can all continue to consider the less fortunate amongst us and think what else we can do to help others in the community. It is traditionally the time to start thinking about new challenges and goals for 2017 and ... sticking to them! Read our article on page 10 if you need some encouragement along the way. There's also some handy tips on decluttering your home on page 12 and, once you've made some space, turn to page 28 for our 'must have' selection of excellent items for the home. On the food front, there's a healthy recipe and news about the local Slimming World group's Miss Slinky 2016. Enjoy this issue and wrap up warmly! Lynsey and the team

community Walking for Health

Stanground Walks Throughout 2016 both of our walks have continued unless we have had inclement weather. It is our intention to keep them going through the next year and beyond.

L

ast year was good for us with the walking group growing. We also held several functions at local hostelries and enjoyed mince pies in the Sue Ryder Café after our last walk of the year. With the weather hopefully now improving and the holiday season behind us, people are now looking towards improving their fitness, getting out in the fresh air and to meeting new people. You can do that by joining us on our two walks which are approximately 4 ½ miles long. The River Walk, on Tuesdays, takes one hour, 20 minutes and the Farcet Walk, on Fridays, takes one hour, 30 minutes. Which one we do is dependent on the weather conditions and who is walking on the day. Ages of the walkers ranges from 50 – 80 years old, with the occasional attendance of younger people. We meet at the Sue Ryder Café on Whittlesey Way which is the start and finish point of both walks. Arriving at about 10:55am Tuesdays and 10:25am Fridays, we complete new walker registration

forms, the walk nominal rolls and briefing, before commencing. Once we arrive back at the café, we are well looked after. We all have a quick chat and some sustenance. The walk is open to everyone over the age of 18, regardless of their level of fitness. Mums with their children and walkers with dogs are also welcome, the parents or owners are responsible for who they bring with them. The aim of the walk is to: l Help inactive people to take up exercise. l Help people recovering from an illness or surgery to get fit again. l Provide a new activity for previously active people who cannot continue with their old activity. l Provide an opportunity for socializing and meeting new people. l Help people to increase and maintain fitness levels. l Show people that walking is not just about physical health it is great for the mind too.

SLEEP EASY

RAISES OVER £6,000 FOR

YOUNG HOMELESS Local people helped to raise over £6,000 for YMCA Cambridgeshire & Peterborough at its inaugural ‘Sleep Easy’ event in November 2016.

M

ore than 35 people took part, sleeping out in Peterborough Cathedral for the night to raise funds and raise awareness of the hardship which young, homeless people endure on a night rough sleeping. The money raised doubled the charity’s original target of £3,000 for the first event in the city. Jonathan Martin, YMCA Cambridgeshire & Peterborough Chief Executive, said: “Sleep Easy went better than we expected for our first event. We were delighted with the response and I’d like to say a big ‘thank you’ to everyone who took part and spent the night out with us. “We hope that everyone left with the key message that made us plan this event, which is to truly experience how difficult it is to endure homelessness.” YMCA Cambridgeshire & Peterborough has operated in

the area since 1852, and provides services for over 450 residents a year, including practical help for young people in crisis. This fundraising event saw participants sleeping on DIY cardboard beds from 7pm to 7am. All participants paid an entry fee of £10 that will contribute to the much-needed funds to help homeless young people at YMCA Cambridgeshire & Peterborough. Clare Reeves, a participant at Sleep Easy, said: “YMCA’s Sleep Easy was very humbling for me. It was an amazing experience and made me appreciate how lucky I am to have a warm house and comfy bed as others are not so fortunate.” YMCA Cambridgeshire & Peterborough is a part of a federation of 113 independent YMCAs, forming the oldest and largest youth charity in the world.

Dementia Resource Centre open day

◆ Relaxed, relevant & respectful Now meeting at Cardea Community Sports Pavilion, Bellona Drive, Peterborough PE2 8GP.

Alzheimer’s Society’s Dementia Resource Centre for Peterborough is opening its doors on Saturday 14 January to give free advice to anyone with questions about dementia. Staff will be on hand from 10am – 2pm to offer information, support and advice. The Alzheimer’s Society team are particularly keen to welcome carers who are unable to access our services during normal office hours, anyone affected by dementia and would like to find out more about the services provided at the Dementia Resource Centre. Kevin Bowyer, Alzheimer’s Society Services Manager for Peterborough, said: “We really hope that people can come along to our Information Day to find out about the services we provide for people affected by

dementia. Two thirds of people with dementia live in the community yet far too many people with the condition are left feeling isolated and lonely and unable to access vital services. This Saturday opening could be a chance for people who are usually at work to access and seek information on services available to them.” The Dementia Resource Centre is a one-stop shop for advice, information and support, ensuring people living with dementia and their carers in Peterborough are able to get the help they need in everyday life.

If would like any further information regarding the open day please call the Dementia Resource Centre on 01733 893853. The charity is also looking for local volunteers – please call Debbie Holmes on 01733 893853

New Cancer Wellbeing Service success

LEGAL

Visitors to the new Cancer Wellbeing Service will see some great new support facilities available to them, which will specifically help people living with and beyond cancer.

Keeping your divorce stress free and simple If you have decided your marriage is over you will most probably want to make the whole process of divorce as painless as possible. So what is the secret? 1. Firstly, take advice and support from your friends and family but also seek professional advice from a family lawyer committed to resolving disputes in a nonconfrontational way. 2. Listen to the professional advice given to you and try to act upon it. Always negotiate before you litigate. Compromise is the essence of any agreement. 3. You may have been thinking about a divorce for years whereas your partner may only have received the news a matter of weeks ago. You might have to slow down for a while, be patient, and wait until they are ready to discuss matters. 4. Inevitably there will be disagreements with your spouse but try to keep emotions under control and avoid verbal abuse and threats. This will simply lead to them becoming difficult and inflexible. You do not want a war. 5. Try to avoid involving the children or using them as a pawn.

They are innocent in this situation and they will need the love and support of both parents. 6. Consider all the options available to resolve matters, such as solicitor negotiation, mediation and only consider court proceedings as a last resort. A Resolution committed lawyer will explore the best option with you, suited to your individual case. Whilst getting a divorce is clearly not an ideal situation it does not have to be a time consuming, stressful, unpleasant money pit. Sensible advice coupled with sensible people can help to ensure the experience is as painless and cost effective as possible but more importantly that you and your children can move forward with your lives in the best possible way. As a Resolution accredited lawyer and a qualified family mediation I can assist you in trying to deal with this difficult transition as painlessly as possible.

The service, which was launched by the Trust in September and is based in the Robert Horrell Macmillan Centre at Peterborough City Hospital, provides invaluable support such as art and creative therapies, complementary therapies such as acupuncture, emotional and financial support, information and a drop-in service for a friendly, listening ear. So far many of the visitors have been those attending hospital cancer services for treatment or follow up appointments. However, support is also available to anyone affected by cancer, including family members, in Peterborough and the surrounding areas.

Kathy Dickinson is the Macmillan Wellbeing Project Manager, a new role funded by Macmillan Cancer Support to oversee the development of the Cancer Wellbeing Service. She explained: “Many of the people that we see in the centre are struggling to cope with the difficulties that a cancer diagnosis can create, which is why this additional help has proven to be so invaluable. “We have been really pleased with the response so far and are really excited about the support facilities that we have been able to provide. People like our open access drop-in facility, which helps them to get the support they need, when they need it.”

The drop in service is open from 9am to 12.30pm weekdays and 1.30pm to 4pm on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday or if you would like to know more call us on 01733 678570.

New Year NEW YOU The end of the year is not just a time that we spend partying, drinking and having fun with our friends and families. For many people it is when they evaluate what they have done during the year and what they should change in the upcoming year. Many of us make resolutions every single year but most of us give in quite quickly and slip back into old comfortable habits. Here are some of the most common resolutions:

Weight loss Trying to lose some wieght is the most popular resolution and many of us repeat it year after year. The key is not to set your goal too high and not to deprive yourselves of your favourite treats. Small steps will help you start to make a difference and with the help of local support groups making friends with similar goals will hopefully give you the boost you need.

Exercise Do we do enough? It's cold outside so do we even want to go out? But there is so much choice when it comes to exercise and most of us want to feel and look good and after the festive eating, so exercise is a good way to shift those extra pounds. Power walking, jogging, and ditching the car as much as possible will start to get you out and about more. Join the gym or even an outdoor bootcamp class if you really want to go for it.

CV and start putting the feelers out. You never know what could be just around the corner.

Decluttering/ getting organised If you have not used it in the last year then you don’t need it! Having a good declutter in the home will make you feel a whole lot better and create space. Old clothes and books pass on to charity and spend some time decluttering the cupboards and draws. You never know you may even find a hidden gem that you had forgotten about. Always remember a tidy home is a happy home. See our article on page 12 for more help with this.

Saving money Kickstart the new year by saving money through switching your energy supplier and/or creating a family budget. Quit bad habits that eat away at your pocket and introduce 'no spending' days.

Travel more The world is a beautiful and amazing place with so many breathtaking sights. If we had the money we would all like to travel more and ditch the yearly package holiday to Spain. But if you don’t have the money, we have many lovely places to see and visit locally, from countryside walks to stately homes. The coast isn’t a million miles away from Peterborough, so hop in the car and enjoy exploring our local area.

Giving up smoking and drinking

Spend less time on social media

If you are a regular smoker and drinker then this is a hard one but there are many support groups locally, including advice from your local chemist, that can help you get rid of bad habits. For smokers, nicotine patches and electronic cigarettes are useful. Contact the NHS for a list of support groups.

How many of us check our phones before bed and the moment we wake up? Spending too much time on Facebook and other social networks is a considerable problem for a surprising number of people these days. For many, logging in and checking friends' activities is habitual. Keep the phones and tablets away from the bedroom to urge the resist to check whilst in bed. A small step like this may help you slowly lessen the need for constant social media checks.

Life changes – new job Stuck in a rut, struggling to get up in the morning? Then maybe a career change is in order. Brush up your

Slimming World’s

Miss Slinky 2016

"It's the best decision I have ever made and it has changed my life."

Sarah King from the Stanground Slimming World group has just been given the title of 'Miss Slinky 2016', voted by her fellow members for her outstanding weight loss of over 4 stone in just under 6 months! Here Sarah explains her incredible journey and the huge impact the weight loss has had on her life ...

I

’m totally blown away to be given this title, as there was a time, not so long ago, that I would never have expected a compliment as my confidence was at an all time low! I suffered terribly from depression, and was under the Mental Health team due to the stress and anxiety I used to feel. I was in a bad place! I was always tired, and used to make excuses not to do things, like socialise with my family and friends. I suffered with this for years, due to numerous things that would build up. I had a car accident back in March last year, and my self esteem and the little confidence I did have just collapsed and I hit a new low. I was rushed into hospital where they thought I had had a stroke as I had lost all feeling down one side and my speech was slurred! I remember

thinking that I wanted to talk, but my words weren’t coming out the right way! It turned out to be a hemiplegic migraine which was causing these symptoms. I then developed a hiatus hernia which, for health reasons, they wouldn’t operate on until I had lost some weight. They realised I was also on the verge of becoming diabetic! Due to my health, I used to suffer terribly with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). It wasn't helped by what I used to eat; all unhealthy foods, as I didn’t have the energy to cook at times! Quick snacks, and late night nibbles meant that my weight ballooned! Everything came to a head when my daughter, who is only 12, was diagnosed with Autism, with special needs and learning disabilities. I realised that I had to do something about my life, that certain things needed to

be sorted, as she would depend on me for the rest of her life, and therefore my life had to change! A good friend of mine attends the Friday morning group in Stanground, at the Community Centre, Whittlesey Road, and had got to her target weight. She told me that the support and motivation from everyone in the group was amazing, and how friendly and welcoming the group was! She invited me to go along and see for myself. I haven’t looked back since! I joined back in June last year and in that short time my confidence has grown so much. I have tons of energy, I run three times a week and I do Zumba and Clubbersize once a week for two hours ... whereas before I felt tired walking just 10 yards! The foods I eat now are everyday foods and there is so much to eat lots of recipes.

Sarah King

This has had such a huge impact on my life! My family have never been happier as we can now enjoy doing lots more things together. My health problems are now non-existent and I no longer have IBS or even need to have my operation. It took a lot for me to walk through the doors of the group, but I am so pleased I did as the group has been fantastic! You're never alone as everyone understands, they build up your confidence and encourage you all the way. I give myself that time every week to attend the group, as it's my time and keeps me on track! I am now 5lb off target weight and I have dropped 10 sizes! It's the best decision I have ever made and it has changed my life.

Decluttering

the KonMari Way By Kate Duggan

Marie Kondo is a Japanese ‘organising consultant’ whose method for decluttering is taking the globe by storm. Called KonMari, the method is actually pretty straightforward. If something you own doesn’t ‘spark joy’, get rid of it. Simple right?

K

onMari isn’t for everyone, and Kondo certainly has a few somewhat bizarre suggestions. (Seriously, who has the time to unpack every item from their handbag, every evening?) But most of her advice is practical, easy to follow and actually makes a lot of sense. She also dips into the psychology of why we hold on to things, and why we should let them go. Kondo recommends collecting every item in a particular category and going through them in one go. So, for instance, you’d lay every

item of clothing you own on the bed or floor, pick up each one and if it doesn’t ‘spark joy’ add it the charity pile. With this approach, you get the shock of realising just how much stuff you actually own, and are more likely to discard items than if you just flick through them when they’re in a drawer. She does, of course, make some concessions for items you really need but that don’t particularly spark joy. The main idea is that you should stop hoarding stuff that you might use one day, clothes that you only ever

wear when the washing pile is teetering over, and items you feel guilty about getting rid of. Kondo also has some good advice when it comes to what to do with the things you keep. She advises against buying expensive storage solutions, and using shoe boxes to keep things tidy instead. She also recommends storing things vertically, e.g. folding clothes so that they can be stacked on end, meaning you can see them, rather than having them buried under other items. I’ve found this useful, to an extent.

It does mean I can find a black t-shirt easily, but that I might have to unfold several black t-shirts to find the one that has the motif I want. Kondo lives alone, and it does feel sometimes that her method is mainly aimed at other single adults. She recommends leading by example, the idea being that if you get rid of clutter, your family will follow you. That has not yet happened in my house I have to say. Nevertheless, I have got rid of several bin bags and boxes full of ‘stuff’ since reading her book and have felt surprisingly relieved about doing it.

If you fancy trying the KonMari method for yourself, her book, The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up, can be ordered from most libraries and book stores.

A GOOD READ

By Willow Coby

North Child by Edith Pattou This Young Adult novel is published by Usborne Books. Based on the Norwegian fairy tale ‘East of the Sun and West of the Moon’ this sweeping fantasy story is set in the snowcovered lands of Scandinavia. Legend has it that children born facing north are destined to travel far from home and die, crushed under ice and snow. When Eugenia’s eighth and youngest child is born her belief in superstition leads her to fear for her daughter’s future. She lies about the circumstances of Rose’s birth but it would seem that fate cannot be deceived by a lie. As Rose grows up she feels out of place in the family and longs to travel, with a desire for adventure. Her unease, combined with a wanderlust means that when a white bear appears and offers her family a way out of poverty and illhealth if she will come away with him

Age 10+ to a land far away in the north, she readily accepts. Here she meets a mysterious stranger in a castle hidden in a mountain. Who is he and why does he only appear at night? Faced with challenges she discovers her purpose in life in a tale of love, betrayal, and adventure. This rich story will appeal to readers from the age of 10 upwards and is a great introduction to epic fantasy.

Stanground Academy

Young Chef

The young chef competition is an eagerly awaited event in the local area. At the Stanground Academy there is a huge demand from the students to be entered into this competition and after much deliberation by the staff, the Academy whittled it down to two candidates for this year; Sophie Styles-Hudson and James Wright, both in year 10.

T

he competition took place on Thursday 20 October 2016 at Nene Park Academy and involved the student’s work being scrutinised by guest chef judges and high ranking officers from the Rotary club based in Peterborough. Mr Schofield, teacher of Technology at the Stanground Academy said ‘The young ambassadors from our Academy made me proud

to be associated with them’. Technician Ali Clarke added ‘the students were 100% focused on the challenge and completed each task to a high standard and the rotary club members were very impressed with the standard of their costings, menus and reasons for choice’. Both students did very well and came a commendable third and fourth, serving high-quality food that would have graced any five star restaurant.

The marking criteria was very strict indeed and it was only one point that separated the second and third placed students which meant that the judges had a very difficult decision to make indeed. The regional final takes place early in the New Year at the Stanground Academy and they are delighted to be hosting this event for the very first time.

Good Sport I

Stanground Sports

t has been a very tough start so far for U15s team. Having faced most of the season without their keeper, the team have come together to win three out of their first seven games. Stanground U15s have also enjoyed a decent cup run in the Hunts Cup. Having won a very tight game against Godmanchester to win 4-3, this result seeing 4 different players score, their next game against a very strong Enyesbury Rovers team. The under 15s knew they had to play their hardest to get a result and although they eventually lost, the players, coaches and supporters alike were very proud of the team performance. In the league, Stanground have done well recording one win out of their first three games. That win came with a fantastic performance

against Thorney Colts, who are just above Stanground in the table. Two goals from the electric Adam Steels and a goal from skipper Kieran Pledger sealed the victory. A lot of players have chipped in for goals for the under 15s this term but Adam and Kieran are the men of the moment with some fantastic displays. Like the under 15s, Stanground U16s have also had a tough start to the season. After a shaky start and having also enjoyed a short cup run, the under 16s received a brand new kit courtesy of local business JCW Plumbing and Heating. The team looked to reboot their season with the boost the new kit provided. This seemed to have a positive effect in the very first game against Hampton, a team whom

As the winter months set in, the cold weather has not slowed the games for the Stanground youth teams. had already bested Stanground this term. However goals from Louis Newman and ex-Hampton player Matthew Harvey, made sure lightening did not strike twice. As Stanground looked to keep up their unbeaten run in their new kit alive, they faced a Feeder side struggling for form. After a competitive and bruising encounter the under 16s ran out narrow 2-1 winners, thanks to goals from Boyan Kostadinov and Jake Cooper. Jake was again on target in the next match scoring a hat trick against Gonerby. However despite this and a battling performance without a goalkeeper, they were unable to prevent Stanground from losing the game, ending their unbeaten streak. Star striker from last season, Jake has kept up his impressive form carried

through from last season, scoring 10 goals in 7 games whilst strike partner David Ibrahim has bagged 5 goals in 7 games. A great news story from the youngest team in the club comes in the form of two players from the under 8s. Molly Clark and Chloe Palmer have impressed throughout the season so far, gaining lots of praise, which has led to the pair being selected to train with the Northants FA girls’ football team. These two youngsters are great ambassadors for the club and the community of Stanground. They are not the only girls playing in the youth ranks within the club but their enthusiasm for football goes to show the sport we love is for everyone, not just for boys.

recipe

Oven-roasted cauliower cheese Roasting the cauliflower imparts a lovely sweetness to the dish and the mustard means you need less cheese so it’s better for that post-Christmas waistline! Ingredients 1 large head cauliflower, cut into florets Salt and freshly ground black pepper For the sauce 20g/¾oz unsalted butter 20g/¾oz plain flour Grated nutmeg to taste 250ml/9floz skimmed milk 40g/1½oz mature cheddar, finely grated 2 tsp Dijon or wholegrain mustard 15g/½oz parmesan, or similar hard cheese, finely grated Method Preheat the oven to 200C / Gas 6. Place the cauliflower florets into an ovenproof dish and season with a pinch of salt and pepper. Roast for 20 minutes, or until tender and starting to brown.

Meanwhile, make the sauce by melting the butter in a saucepan, then adding the flour and cooking for 1-2 minutes, or until a light golden colour. Gradually add the milk until smooth, and then cook over a gentle heat for 3-4 minutes stirring constantly until thickened. Add the grated nutmeg. Reduce the heat then add the mustard and cheddar cheese. Put the roasted cauliflower into the sauce and mix so that all the florets are coated. Pour the cheese and cauliflower mixture back into the roasting dish, sprinkle over the parmesan and return to the oven for 10-15 minutes, or until the cheese is golden-brown and the sauce is bubbling. Serve as a supper dish with a green salad.

A new year, a new you? This is not a slimming or keep fit promotion. Why not try something new this year? Why not come along to one of the pubs in your local area and try and improve your general knowledge with a quiz night (The Woolpack Sunday evenings, The Palmerston Arms Sunday Evenings, The Heron Tuesday evenings). Or maybe you would like to join in playing pool, darts, or even dominoes? There are lots of events going on.

The Cherry Tree As I'm sure quite a few of you are aware, The Cherry Tree recently, and very suddenly, closed its doors. It was hugely popular for showcasing a large range of great live music and will be sorely missed. We wish Janet, Clive and the rest of the team all the best.

With their closure, I will start looking at listing what is going on in other local pubs, with The Palmerston Arms, Coal Heavers and The Swiss Cottage.

There is even a ukulele band which practises on Thursdays at The Palmerstone Arms. They will be performing at Charters on 22 January – along with their newest member, my son! - so don't stay in feeling down during January – get out there & join in ...

Be sale savvy when searching for a January bargain online As a nation of bargain hunters, we love nothing more than the satisfaction of snapping up a juicy January deal – from cut price clothing to low cost luxuries.

B

ut while many of us rejoice in a post-Christmas spending spree, so do the online fraudsters and fake traders. A country-wide campaign run by Action Fraud has been warning people of the dangers of online shopping fraud throughout the festive period, as well as all types of fraud which people fall victim to during the season of spending. New figures released in December show that last year, victims reported losing over £10 million to fraudsters when shopping online for Christmas presents. The largest loss was one

victim who lost £86,000 when he tried to purchase a boat from a fraudster on Ebay. The advice is also very relevant to the January sales, and here are some tips on how to avoid getting caught out by the New Year misery makers. One of the worst offenders are the counterfeiters. Counterfeit goods range from clothes, bags, watches, perfume, cosmetics and electrical items as well as pirate DVDs, CDs, computer software and games. However, more and more people are now prepared to

knowingly buy fake items as gifts, but there are serious risks involved with counterfeit goods. Fake goods are often bad quality and in most cases unsafe. Counterfeit electrical goods are not put through the same vigorous safety checks and fake cosmetics and fragrances have been found to contain toxic levels of chemicals and unpleasant substances. Our advice, as well as that of the police and Action Fraud, is don’t rush into spending your cash on what looks like it is a great offer. Take a few minutes to check and research what you are buying and

where/who you are buying it from. If the deal looks too good to be true, the chances are it probably is. And be vigilant when it comes to snapping up offers and deals which appear on your social media channels - as research shows that these are popular and preferred platforms for the fraudsters to target victims. So make sure that you don’t get short changed by the fraudsters during the January sales. Living in the modern well life can be very busy and keeping the home in order is not always a priority. I have put together some items that will help make a less stressful home for 2017.

KitchenAid 125 Artisan 4.8L Stand Mixer, almond cream

I was given my first KitchenAid mixer as a bridal gift. Until then I still used my hand mixer! I thought that this couldn't be £495 easier than just mixing it by hand. Boy was I wrong! I like that I can walk away while it mixes, the super-fast speed makes the best whipped cream but my favourite aspect is the hook attachment that breaks up my chicken for my famous buffalo chicken dip. It even breaks up your pork for pulled pork! No more sore arm muscles.. £495 www.johnlewis.co.uk

wires with this one, just pull out of the cupboard when you need it and go. It’s made my life so much easier and saved me loads of time. This is my all-time must item. With a battery life of 60 minutes and so lightweight you can fly up the stairs. Available in most department stores and online. £109.99 www.vax.co.uk
