www.stangroundgazette.co.uk Stanground Gazette would like to apologise to Councillor Chris Harper for his article in the May issue on page 29 for the mistake of missing out his name on feature he provided.

The Wildlife Trust is rolling out its annual campaign for people to become engrossed in and engaged by nature - learning simple and pleasing ways to connect to nature. As way of engaging more meaningfully with nature and wildlife, the Wildlife Trust in Cambridgeshire - and Trusts across the country encourage a daily activity or action during the month of June, looking to create the UK’s first month-long nature challenge event. 30 Days Wild involves selecting and doing Random Acts of Wildness each day of June and for anyone registering in advance, during May there are

posters, leaflets, wall charts and stickers available, which will help bring inspiration. Looking to keep things effective yet simple, this can be a sociable time to share wildness with family, friends and colleagues. It's well known that experiencing the benefits of being outside, can affect the lowering of stress and anxiety, boost motivation, improve mood, plus bring about increased human connections. The actions can be for one second, one minute or one hour a day – the packs will bring encouragement and ideas for Random Acts of Wildness.

Youth domestic violence project secures funding YMCA Cambridgeshire & Peterborough has received a grant of £325,568 from the Big Lottery Fund to support Respect, a three-year project aimed at increasing awareness of youth domestic violence across the region. Launching in May 2017, Respect aims to help break the cycle of youth domestic violence through working with victims and perpetrators and their families. Lisa McLean, Head of Projects at YMCA Cambridgeshire & Peterborough, commented, “The Respect project will work with local services including schools and students, to increase awareness about what constitutes acceptable behaviour within relationships, to help prevent future abuse. Our aim is to offer both prevention and intervention for young people and break patterns of behaviour. This is vital to reducing the long term emotional and financial cost of domestic violence.” According to the Peterborough Safer Schools Sergeant, Susie Tinsley, there are cases of young people under the age of 16, who are either committing or victimised by

domestic violence, “We work with young people who are both victims and perpetrators of domestic abuse and there is a real need for a service to support young people in the city,w to stop the cycle of abuse. The Respect programme will enable us to achieve this.” YMCA Cambridgeshire & Peterborough will launch Respect on 1 May 2017. YMCA Cambridgeshire & Peterborough is one of 133 local YMCAs in England and Wales that, together, support more than 200,000 young people every year. The Big Lottery Fund is responsible for giving out 40% of the money raised by National Lottery players for good causes. Every year, it invests over £650 million, awarding around 12,000 grants across the UK for health, education, environment and charitable purposes.

home&garden

Of slugs and snails Lettuces are coming forth in the vegetable plot and hostas in the flower garden - just two plants that really show the damage of slugs and snails, so often voted gardeners number one pest.

O

nce more, we start a year following a mild, wet winter, which means slug and snail populations will be heaving, as less time has been spent in hibernation - more time breeding and feeding. This is a time when traditionally, gardeners reach for slug pellets of various propriety varieties, but it's the use of these deathly toxins which is, in fact, exasperating the problems we face in our gardens. Yes, these pellets kill slugs and snails, but they also kill thrushes, frogs, toads, hedgehogs and ground beetles - the natural scourge of the slug population. It is best to resort to other methods to control these pests, especially since not all are indeed pests, for instance,

the leopard slug is known for a diet of other slugs and thus, a welcome visitor to our gardens, whilst the vast majority of these animals feed not on new growth, but decaying old vegetation helping to keep our gardens neat, tidy and well fertilized. Slugs and snails hate to cross copper, as it's high conductivity disturbs them to the extent that they shall not pass. A ring of copper tape around any points where slugs enter a house, will give you slug free indoors, whilst ringing key plants and/or pots again, affords great protection without poisoning the predators. As well as hating to cross copper, slugs and snails dislike rough surfaces, such as: sharp sand and ground glass, both of which

make effective barriers, though of course they will need replacing after heavy rainfall. Another successful prevention is companion planting, as certain plants are seen as highly unattractive to slugs such as: fuchsias and aquilegias or, of course, sacrificial planting - where you add in cheap delicacy plants such as: nasturtiums as sacrificial lambs to protect your prize plants. By avoiding toxic chemicals, a healthy population of predators should thrive in your garden and help reach a symbiotic balance, so that you will be able to enjoy the abundance of local wildlife, alongside the taste of home produce and beauty of your prized flowers.

Saving for your first home Your Lifetime ISA savings and the bonus can be used towards buying your first home, worth up to £450,000, without incurring a withdrawal charge. You must be buying your home with a mortgage. You must use a conveyancer or solicitor to act for you in the purchase, and the funds must be paid direct to them by your Lifetime ISA provider. If you're buying with another first time buyer, and you each have a Lifetime ISA, you can both use your government bonus. You can also buy a house with someone who isn't a first time buyer but they will not be able to use their Lifetime ISA without incurring a withdrawal charge. Your Lifetime ISA must have been opened for at least 12 months before you can withdraw funds from it to buy your first home. If you have a Help to Buy ISA, you can transfer those savings into your Lifetime ISA or you can continue to save into both - but you'll only be able to use the government bonus from one to buy your first home. You can transfer the balance in your Help to Buy ISA into your Lifetime ISA at any time if the amount is not more than £4,000. In 2017/18 only, you can transfer the total balance of your Help to Buy ISA, as it stands on 5 April 2017, into your Lifetime ISA without affecting the £4,000 limit.

Successful outdoors spring clean for Baptist church

◆ New church, new community

◆ Warm welcome to all

◆ Relaxed, relevant & respectful

A small, but enthusiastic group of members from Stanground Baptist Church, got stuck into an array of jobs for the annual Spring clean. They arrived bright and early on two Saturday mornings in April and May, with garden tools and paint brushes at the ready, to tackle a variety of jobs outside the church and in the garden. As the church does not employ a cleaner, gardener or caretaker, it relies on willing volunteers from its fellowship to keep the building and its garden areas tidy and clean throughout the year and the Spring clean targets any extra jobs. The team was blessed with fine weather, so lots of outdoor jobs were completed, in-between plenty of cups of tea and coffee. Paula Stapleton, one of the Deacons, who was responsible for organising the Spring clean explained, “Our church has long had the motto: 'Church of the community, for the community' and it is very important to our members to serve the people of Stanground in practical, as well as spiritual ways. Part of this service is to open the church during the week, not just on a Sunday and to make it a safe,

welcoming and pleasant place to come to. We have an ongoing plan of improvements to the building and its grounds; this summer will include a complete re-plastering and painting of our main hall and the creation of a new-look entrance, to provide a warm, bright and welcoming environment for everyone who uses it - including our toddler group and coffee morning visitors, as well as our Sunday congregation. I would like to thank everyone who helped at the Spring clean and all the volunteers who look after the church week by week.” The work completed on the church garden included: weeding and planting, painting the sheds and fences, fitting an outdoor tap and treating the decking area ready for everyone to start enjoying the area after the winter! Groups which regularly use the church during the week include: Brownies, Totstop baby and toddler group, Coffee morning and Foodbank.

As the summer gets into full swing, here's some hot weather safety tips... The hot weather can cause real problems for our pets. From BBQ safety, to taking your dog on holiday or even leaving them in kennels - follow these simple top tips to keep your pet happy and healthy this summer.

Cats

Originating from the desert, cats are generally very comfortable in the heat and can often be found stretched out sunbathing in the summer months. Cats (like dogs and rabbits) have sweat glands in their feet, so if you notice wet pawprints - it’s sweating. Make sure that they always have fresh drinking water and access to a cool environment should they need it. Cats generally sleep about 16 hours a day, but will nap more on hot days. Play with your cat during the cooler hours in the summer months.

Dogs

Dogs are generally sensible in the heat, but they can easily overheat when playing games and running, so be very careful when playing games or exercising them. To be safe, it is best to walk your dog during the cooler morning and evening hours in the summer months.

Beware of heatstroke and dehydration. Symptoms include panting, lethargy, drooling, vomiting & collapse – if you are at all concerned, then please contact your vet straight away. Never leave your dog in the car, because even with the windows cracked it might only take a matter of minutes for the temperature inside to soar to fatal levels.

Rabbits

Hygiene is very important in the summer months, as flies and maggots cause flystrike, which is often fatal. Check your rabbit’s bottom 2 or 3 times a day in the summer months, to ensure they are clean & dry and infestation free. If you need to take your rabbit out in the summer months, never leave your rabbit in the car because hot cars can be fatal for pets. Move you rabbit’s hutch to a shady spot or move it indoors to a room with air conditioning or a cooling fan. ADVERTISEMENT FEATURE

Force free meaning, I would never use aversive methods to cause pain and fear or use physical force. I am fully committed to a reward and science based, force free philosophy. I have always had a keen interest in all things dog related and after spending several years bored behind a desk in a busy office, I decided that enough was enough and instead wanted to follow my passion. I have two dogs myself, IO is a 3 year old Rottweiler x Collie and Bigby is a 2 year old Smooth Collie. We generally enjoy going on adventures and cuddling up on the sofa. I regularly attend courses and seminars, as you can never stop learning and I hope to soon start a distance learning course in Canine Behaviour and Psychology. Please see advert above left

Hannah looked after my 3 beagles this weekend in my home. It's the first time I've left my newest rescue, as he has a few issues and I previously wouldn't have felt comfortable, but I knew he'd be fine in Hannah's capable hands. I had regular updates whilst I was away and came home to 3 happy, content and tired little beagles, plus some lovely photos emailed to me. I'd highly recommend and would definitely use the service again if/when the need arises. Bryony McDonald.

June

June brings forth Father's Day – Sunday 19 June – so remember to take your Dad out and make him feel special. Whilst looking up the date for this, I came across a few other notable June dates; Did you know that Father's Day shares its day with National Kissing Day? Or that there is a National Yo Yo Day? This is jointly shared with the beginning of Ramadam fasting (6 June.) 20 June is the Summer Solstice - which sadly is the longest day of the year – so make good use of the lovely, light evenings. The 21 June is World Music Day and 29 June is National Hug Day – so spread the love!

The Heron

The Heron Quiz and Play Your Cards Right are on every Tuesday from 8pm. Meri says their beautiful, enclosed garden is an ideal place to have an evening sup whilst the sun goes down. All the international football will be shown on Sky Sports HD, BT Sport HD and terrestrial television in HD. The England International will take place in The Back Room on the big screen on 18 June. The Heron has a Facebook page for you to find out what's happening. Meri promises BBQs galore over the summer months. Visit – www.facebook.com/THEHERONSTANGROUND

The Woolpack

The recent Woolpack Beer Festival was a great success and raised over £400 for a local 8 year old boy – Rico – who is fighting a rare form of Meningitis. Rico was in a coma and has lost a foot and some toes whilst battling it. There are a number of charity events going on in the area to support Rico & his family. It is hope that they can enjoy a family holiday once he is better. Big changes are happening at the pub, with Ang and Geoff – formerly of The Whittle in Stanground – moving in to take over the day to day running of the pub from the end of May. Linda says that this will free her up to organise lots more events such as beer festivals, charity days, etc – so watch this space! The Woolpack will be open at 12.00 on a Monday and Tuesday and doing lunches again. Food times will be: Lunches 12.00 - 2.00 Mon to Sat, 12.00 - 3.00 Sun. Evening meals 6.00 - 8.00 Mon to Sat.

SUMMER Hoorah! Summer is finally upon us! And what better way to welcome

BBQ

RECIPES

summer, than to introduce the summer eating for those long summer days! We’ve included a favourite that, after making it for the past two years, was just too good not to include ... it’s our BBQ Chicken Burgers. BBQ Chicken Burgers Ingredients: 4 skinless boneless chicken breasts 4 rashers bacon 4 burger buns lettuce tomato

red onion For the sauce: 4 tbsp tomato ketchup, 4 tbsp brown sauce, 2 tsp clear honey

Method: 1. Make the marinade for the chicken by adding the sauces together in a large bowl. Leave some spare and to the side. 2. Slice halfway into the chicken and open it up, flatten it down slightly with your hand. 3. Toss the chicken into the bowl full of marinade to coat.

4. Barbecue the chicken for about 10 minutes, or until completely cooked. 5. Cook the bacon at the same time as the chicken. 6. Assemble burger with lettuce, onion and tomato and serve with a dollop of the spare sauce.

This one is for those of you whose summer is all about the cold food, tomatoes, salads, the light options and the quick on-the-go. While the tomatoes are ripe and the peppers are crisp and juicy, allow yourself to indulge slightly, with the addition of diced succulent chicken breast.

Grilled Chicken Salad Ingredients:

2 boneless chicken breast halves 1 large red pepper ½ red onion whole lettuce

cherry tomatoes salad dressing grated cheese

Method: 1. Preheat grill or BBQ. 2. Lightly oil the grill pan or BBQ plate. 3. Grill the chicken for approximately 10 minutes on each side, or until completely cooked. 4. Remove from heat, leave to cool and then dice.

5. In a large bowl, toss together the chicken, lettuce, peppers, onion, tomatoes and any other optional ingredients. Add grated cheese on top. 6. Pour on the salad dressing of your choice (Cedar dressing is a great choice) and serve! Is the barbecue still hot? It's time for a treat we have the perfect desert option.

BBQ Banana Boat Ingredients: 1 banana chocolate spread peanut butter

marshmallows chocolate chips (or chunks) aluminium foil

Method: 1. Peel a section off of a banana, but do not fully remove it as you will need the peel later.

4. Put the peel back into place and wrap the banana in aluminium foil.

2. Cut the peeled section out of the banana, but don’t cut all the way through.

5. Let the bananas sit on the BBQ for 3-5 minutes.

3. Add the Nutella and peanut butter and optional toppings. (Marshmallows and chocolate chips are good)

6. Remove the banana boats from the BBQ and let them sit to cool for about a minute. Open and using the foil as a plate, serve and enjoy!

Stanground Football

As the season comes to a close for most Stanground age groups, many teams will feel it has been a successful year of football. Stanground U13s in particular, have had a fantastic month helping them push closer to the Division 3 title. It all started with a must win game against strugglers Sawtry to keep dreams of coming first still insight. Stanground knew the task that had to be completed and they completed it in great fashion as they stormed to an 8-1 victory, with a 5 goal haul from inform striker Ali Mavani as well as efforts from Liam Denyer, Keanu Scowen and Alexander Sutton. With this momentum, Stanground went on to beat 1st place Spalding in their next game, closing the gap on them. After being stunned by a surprise defeat to March in a midweek fixture, Stanground went back to winning ways, as they swept aside Kingscliffe winning 6-3 to keep their ambitions of finishing first alive. Stanground Sports U15s still have a lot to play for after a very mixed month in April, they still hope of finishing in the top three with 2 games in hand. Stanground begun by playing the team directly ahead of them, Bourne town in a game that ended 1-1. Up next for the Under 15s were against local rivals, Feeder Soccer, as they took aim for a final push. At half-time however, they found themselves 2-0 down, but inspiration in the second half from hat-trick heroes,

Adam Steels and Aaron Field, as they turned a two-goal deficit into a 7-2 victory. Stanground are now 8pts behind 3rd, with two games behind. The Under 15s are now 8 points behind 3rd place with 9 points available, can they do it? The season is all but over for the mini-soccer teams and every age group from the development squad (U7s) to the Under 11s and each team has had very successful campaigns. These teams have enjoyed many positive results, building strong team camaraderie and most importantly, having fun. The Under 10s have a great end of the season with some superb performances to end on a high. One player in particular, Tyler Sansom, has been in terrific form scoring in each of the last 3 games.

Under 13s

Looking forward for next season 2017/18, we are looking for players at the following age groups: Under 9s (Year 4) - Outfield and Goalkeeper, Under 10s – Outfield and Goalkeeper, U11s – Outfield and Goalkeeper, U13s – Outfield, U15s – Outfield and U16s – Outfield. Development Centre (7s and under) will continue next season too.

If you are interested, please contact us through our Facebook page Stanground Sports Youth FC for further information.

Peterborough Wildcats a roaring success The SSE Wildcats Girls’ Football Club, which is being run by ICA Sports FC in Peterborough on behalf of Huntingdonshire FA, is part of a nationwide project, as part of the FA strategy to double the number of girls playing football by the end of 2020. The club was launched with a visit from the FA skills coaches and sessions will now continue on a weekly basis, proving highly enjoyable football coaching sessions for girls from 5 to 11 years old that would like to start playing football. Sessions are designed to allow girls new to the game, the opportunity to develop basic football skills in a welcoming and encouraging environment.

Under 11s

By Paulo Lantosca (Stanground Academy student)

The launch of Peterborough SSE Wildcats Girls’ Football Club was a roaring success, seeing more than 40 girls, aged 5-11, enjoying a day of footballing fun.

Staff at the centre have experience stretching back 10 years with the development of girls at this age group and have seen dozens of players move through the ranks that are now playing adult football at a variety of levels. On Thursday 1 June, all of the girls will be invited to attend an Arsenal Soccer School, where they will have the opportunity to meet an Arsenal Ladies 1st team player, that will be visiting ICA Sports FC. The club will provide girls with the opportunity to join newly formed teams that will play in the S-Tech Cambridgeshire Girls League from September 17.

New fines for litter louts – particularly those who car share!

If there’s one thing to make most of us tut with distain is watching someone deliberately drop litter or throw rubbish from a car. Keep Britain Tidy estimates that more than 30 million tons of litter are collected from streets in England every year, that’s enough to fill four Wembley stadiums. The charity has found that, while 62 per cent of people dropped litter, just 28 per cent admitted having done so. Almost six in 10 people said they considered litter to be a problem, and local authorities spend an estimated £1 billion a year clearing up the mess. However, new plans to clean up on litter louts are currently under discussion which will see fines for people caught dropping rubbish in public places doubled to £150.

At the moment, fines for littering are set locally by councils and range from £50 to £80, with a default level of £75 if the council does not specifically set its own amount. In addition, drivers could also be fined automatically if litter is thrown from their vehicle, even if a passenger is to blame, according to reports. The Government wants litter thrown from cars to be treated in the same way as speeding, with the registered keeper held responsible unless someone else comes forward to admit the offence. Fines for littering from a vehicle could also be increased from £75

to £125 in England under a new strategy being drawn up by the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA). It would then be down to the driver to either admit to the offence and pay the prescribed fine; challenge it in court; or nominate the passenger who was actually at fault. What do you think to these proposals? We hope that a change in the law will encourage the minority of people who flout it to think before flinging their crisp packet, flyer stuck to the windscreen or takeaway box out of their window – and to think a little more about our environment.
