e’re going wild about nature with this issue, so we’ve rustled a few autumn leaves up for some local walks for health, plus an activity filled ramble round some of our nearby country parks . There’s also information about Hampton Nature Reserve which allows its volunteers a fascinating insight into the local wildlife. After all that fresh air, warm the oven for some baking, with a delicious sultana cake recipe on page 23 as we reveal the secrets of the Clandestine Cake Club. With a focus on our younger people, we’ve highlighted some of Stanground Academy’s A Level students’ exceptional results. There’s information about the Centre for Young Musicians‘ local branch which opens this autumn as part of an ongoing national expansion. You can also learn about the invaluable support offered by the YMCA Counselling Service. And there’s plenty more inside. Enjoy ... FORTHCOMING EVENTS Classical guitar soloist Amanda Cook

16 October

Music that spans the world City of Peterborough Symphony Orchestra is proud to start its 26th season, joining the Latin to the great classical tradition in a wonderful journey on Sunday, 16 October, 3pm-5pm.

It spans the world from Brazil (how appropriate in this Olympic year) to Austria via sunny Spain with the inspiring maestro, Steve Bingham, and in the company of the brilliant prizewinning virtuoso guest guitarist, Amanda Cook. The programme begins with Heltor Villa-Lobus’ Sinfonietta No 1 in as an affectionate tribute to admired composer Mozart, mixing a classical clarity with the quirkiness that you would expect from this famous Brazilian composer. Onwards to the gardens of the Palacio Real de Aranguez, south of Madrid, for the unforgettable and immensely popular Guitar

Concerto by Joaquim Rodrigo. The blind composer, Rodrigo, said this described the “fragrance of magnolias, the singing of birds, and the gushing of fountains”. Amanda Cook will be bringing this much-loved concerto to a brilliant and sunny life. She has been dubbed the “guitar queen with a silken touch” by The Independent. Finally, the orchestra embraces Schubert’s mighty Symphony No 9. Known as “The Great C Major Symphony” this is truly one of the greatest symphonies ever written. Tickets are £12.50 and £10.50 (concessions), with children under 16 admitted for free.

Hyperlocal Rainfall is a brand new phone app that was launched at the PECT Green Festival. The aim of the app is to enable the residents of Peterborough to obtain incredibly accurate shortterm rainfall predictions specific to an individual’s journey or location, which can be planned, viewed, and saved within the app, enabling people to be more confident to walk and cycle more by taking the weather into account and hence improve their health and wellbeing. This new app has been funded by Innovate UK and is being delivered by the charity

Peterborough Environment City Trust (PECT) in partnership with Anglia Ruskin University, Loughborough University and Meniscus. The feedback from testers has been overwhelmingly positive, with many reporting that the app has been incredibly accurate in its predictions, making it very useful for planning journeys. One tester said: “I am bowled over by it, it is so much better than anything else out there for telling what is going on.”

More information on the app can be found at www.pect.org.uk/HyperlocalRainfall

Midwife prepares London to Paris cycle ride for charity Nikki Butler, Clinical Midwifery Team Leader at Peterborough City Hospital’s Maternity Department, is gearing up to take part in a gruelling 300-mile bike ride from London to Paris to raise money for UK charity, The Sick Children’s Trust. Nikki will start the 4-day journey from south London before making her way across the channel to cycle through the French countryside and finishing at the Eiffel Tower in Paris. She will be joined by fellow midwives who are also taking part in the challenge. She said: “Four years ago, my son was born prematurely and was cared for at The Rosie Hospital in Cambridge. The Sick Children’s Trust not only supported me during a difficult time, but also provided accommodation at Chestnut House. I can’t praise the charity enough for their help and I am happy to say that my son is now a fit and healthy four year old.

“I am hoping to raise £1,000 to help them continue the great work they do with families.” Chestnut House Manager Abi Abdel-aal said: “It’s lovely that Nikki is taking on such a huge challenge to fundraise for The Sick Children’s Trust. When a baby is seriously ill, it’s an incredibly difficult time and The Sick Children’s Trust helps ease some of the worries families have by keeping them together by their baby’s side in free ‘Home from Home’ accommodation. It costs the charity around £30 per night to support a family, so we couldn’t be more grateful to Nikki for choosing to fundraise for us. We wish her and her colleagues the best of luck.”

COMMUNITY NEWS

Stanground C of E Churches ‘Michaelmas’ used to be a big day in the country year because farm rents would be due for the previous three months. When the blue Michaelmas daisy flowered the farmers knew the landlord’s agent would be calling round! This way of life has only just passed out of living memory, but here in Stanground we still celebrate Michaelmas because of our church, St Michael and All Angels. So, on 24 September from 11am-5pm we have the Community Festival and Fun Day in Mace Road. But that’s not all we have on this month: Harvest Festival comes hot on the heels of St Michael’s Day, with St Michael’s harvest on 2 October at 11.15am and St John’s on 9 October at 9.30am.

Then at the end of October we are hosting a special Light Party for children on the eve of All Hallows (commonly known as Halloween). This will be a really fun event so please see our facebook page for details. Finally, the all new prize bingo will now be running each month in the Church Hall, Mace Road. If you are a bingo fan, the dates for your diary are: 19 October, 16 November and 14 December. Eyes down 7pm! Thanks to Colin and Tess for hosting.

Cambridgeshire Fire and Rescue Service Winter is coming and Cambridgeshire Fire and Rescue Service is encouraging all residents to get their chimney professionally swept before the cold sets in. Top tips to enjoy an open fire safely: • Sweep your chimney at least once a year and get brickwork inspected, especially the chimney breast and roof space. • Do not bank fires too high or overload the grate, and remember to let them burn

down well and check the hearth before going to bed. • Use a fire or spark guard to prevent accidental fires. • Do not place objects on or over the mantle-piece which may cause you to stand too close to the fire to reach or use them. • Burn only suitable fuels and avoid burning resinous woods as soot builds up quickly. Above all, ensure you have a working smoke alarm fitted on each floor of your home and a carbon monoxide alarm installed.

STANGROUND PAST

The Yanks and the GI Brides

T

hey were clearly resented at first because they seemed to be all show. Forever chewing gum, they would call everyone Bud or Mac. The British, being far more reserved, had little time for all of that. Stationed locally they soon become a familiar sight; thousands of G.Is seemed to arrive overnight, with pockets full of money. They were generous to the British girls who they often referred to as ‘Honey’. British troops couldn’t compete with the Yanks’ lifestyle and some people failed to understand them. One big problem was that the British men were away fighting the war, so the yanks were left chasing many Peterborough girls. Most looked smart in their uniforms and searching for British girls was

an easy quest for them. G.I’s were stationed at either Connington, Polebrook or Molesworth and many local girls left their place of birth to be with them as they saw a better lifestyle with more money and glamour. I wonder what happened to them, some were as young as 17 when they were whisked off to America in the excitement by plane to be G.I Brides. There were some stories that the girls were unhappy with what they had found there. After the war the Yanks returned home and there was much sadness. Friendships had been formed with local families that had brought much happiness to the community in wartime. The special relationship between America and Great Britain still exists to this day.

Stanground

Cruising around Stanground in their big American cars as they headed for the bars, yes, the Yanks had arrived! I can remember their cars going up and down Church Street and they only seemed interested in the girls they could meet. We couldn’t fail to notice them and we began to see more G.I Joe.

FINANCIAL FINANCIAL

MONEY MATTERS by Pete Bird, Bird & Co Certified Public Accountants

Do you have any tax or business questions? If so email Pete Bird of Bird & Co info@birdandco.ltd and if of general interest we will publish them here.

Paper Self-Assessment Tax Return: The 2015-16 tax return deadline for taxpayers who continue to submit paper Self-Assessment returns is 31 October 2016. Late submission of a Self-Assessment return will become liable to a £100 late filing penalty. The penalty will apply even if there is no liability or if any tax due is paid in full by 31 January 2017. We would recommend that anyone still submitting paper tax returns consider the benefits of submitting the returns electronically. In this way they will benefit from an additional three months (until 31 January 2017) in which to file their return. Taxpayers with certain underpayments in the 2015-16 tax year can elect to have this amount collected via their tax code (in 2017-18), provided they are in employment or in receipt of a UK-based pension. The coding adjustment applies to certain debts and the amount of debt that can be coded out ranges from £3,000 to £17,000 based on a graduated scale. The maximum coding out allowance only applies to taxpayers with earnings exceeding £90,000. Daily penalties of £10 per day will apply if the tax return is still outstanding three months after the filing date up to a maximum of £900. If the return still remains outstanding further higher penalties will be charged from six months and twelve months. Taxpayers that received a letter informing them that they have to submit a paper return after 30 July 2016 have an extended deadline which runs for three months from the date they received the letter to submit a paper return.

Dates to remember - October 2016 1 October 2016 Due date for Corporation tax for companies with an accounting period ended 31 December 2015. Monthly dates: 19th of the month: Due date for postal payments of PAYE, NIC and CIS deductions and online filing deadline for CIS300 monthly return to HMRC. 22nd of the month: Due date for electronic payments of PAYE, NIC and CIS deductions to HMRC. 31st of the month: Due date for filing the paper self-assessment tax returns that applies to individuals, partnerships and trustees.

LEGAL ADVICE

Divorce & finance FAQs

Divorce & finance questions answered Q. Will I get spousal maintenance from my ex and if so, how much? A. Whether you get spousal maintenance and how much depends on various factors, including the length of your marriage, your own income or ability to work, and your age. If you are entitled to claim spousal maintenance (on top of child maintenance) this would be paid depending on your “needs”, not simply to give you with an equal income to your spouse in the future. Q. Are money, pensions and the house split 50/50 on divorce? A. Many factors will need to be considered before a division of assets can be agreed – for example; the needs of any children; fairness to both parties; the age of the parties; length of marriage; and the ability of the parties to work. There is no formula for financial settlements on divorce and no “one size fits all” answer. Couples may reach an agreement between themselves, they may ask solicitors

to negotiate on their behalf, attend mediation or ultimately allow a judge to decide. This really is a specialist area of family law and talking to an experienced family lawyer can really help. Q. What if the marital home is not in my name? A. It almost certainly makes no difference provided you’ve been married a while. All the assets of a marriage are considered to be joint, no matter whose name they are in. BUT it is very important that you take advice before you think about leaving the house as that will affect some important legal rights. Q. Can I change the locks? A. The general rule is that you should not change the locks on a jointly owned property as you are both entitled to have access. That said, we’d certainly encourage you to protect yourself, your children and your property in other ways, so if there is a genuine reason to be concerned about this, talk to a lawyer.

YOUNG GAZETTE

A-level success for Stanground Academy students Students at the Stanground Academy are celebrating after receiving their results for their A-level or equivalent courses of study. A-Level performance saw a 100 per cent pass rate with an increase of 16 percentage points in the average point score (APS) per entry. Performance in vocational qualifications also improved with the percentage of students achieving two or more vocational equivalents of A-levels rising five percentage points to 82 per cent. What’s even more impressive is that the percentage of students achieving three or more vocational qualifications rose 15 percentage points and now stands at 57 per cent. Whilst all the students have done remarkably well, there are some that have particular cause to celebrate:  Jodie Bailey who achieved an A* in English Literature, an A in Philosophy, an A in English Language C in French and is going to study English Literature and Philosophy at the University of East Anglia. Jodie joined the Academy in Year 7 from a local primary school. Her academic ability shone right from the start and she has grown and flourished in the sixth form. She was Head Girl and was an integral part of the sixth form committee helping to fundraise for local and national charities.  Krzysztof Kasprzak who achieved an A* in Polish, a B in Mathematics, a B in Further Mathematics plus a C in Physics and

is going to study Mathematics at De Montfort University. Krzysztof joined the Academy at the start of Year 12, having just arrived from Poland. His talent for the sciences was evident and despite not having GCSE qualifications he was given a chance to sit A-levels. As well as studying for his A-level he has also sat for his GCSE maths and English examinations. He has repaid the chance given to him by the Academy by gaining a place at the university of his choice to study his beloved maths.  Gianluca Barks who has achieved a B in Philosophy, a B in Mathematics, a B in Further mathematics plus a B in EPQ and is going to study Philosphy at Exeter University. Gianluca joined the Academy in January 2014 from Italy. Although he only had Italian qualifications he was given the opportunity to sit A-levels from September 2014. Prior to him starting his official studies he sat in lessons to gain knowledge of that subject. He took on board all he learnt within the few months and was able to move forward to AS level with ease. He achieved his GCSE English in Year 12 and then decided to pick up EPQ in Year 13 alongside his other subjects.  Maks Zdunek who has achieved an A in Mathematics, a B in Further

Mathematics, a B in Physics plus an A in Chemistry AS level and a B in Biology AS level. Maks is going to study Mechanical Engineering at the University of Sheffield. Maks decided to re-start Year 12 as he did not do as well as he should have at AS level. Since then he has been an extremely conscientious student and has managed to secure a place at the university he has always dreamed of going to.  Stanislaw Franc who has achieved an A* in Polish, an A in Mathematics, an A in Further Mathematics, a B in Physics plus a B in Computing (Double) and is going to study Mathematics at the University of Warwick. Stan is a very conscientious student who was always going to achieve his goal. He is naturally gifted in the sciences and this was evident from when he started at the Academy in Year 9. Stan will do extremely well at university, doing the thing he loves best.  Danielle Kemp who has achieved a triple Distinction* in Business Studies (Extended Diploma) plus a Distinction in Computing and is going to study Business Studies with Professional Practice at the University of Lincoln. Danielle’s natural aptitude for business led her to ask if she could do a triple award in this subject along with the

computing course she had chosen. Danielle has achieved the highest possible grade for the course and was able to secure an unconditional offer at the university of her choice. James Scarrott, Principal, said: “This is an excellent set of results for our students. Yet again, under the guidance of our dedicated staff, our students have continued the improvement we are seeing yearon-year in the A-level and level 3 vocational results at the Stanground Academy. With a 100 per cent pass rate and more students than ever before achieving grades above their expected levels of progress, our students should be proud of their success. This is a true reflection of what hard work, commitment and focus can do. I would like to congratulate our students and offer my thanks to the Academy staff who have made this possible, ensuring that each of our students is well equipped to follow their chosen pathway as they move forward in the next stage of their life.” The Stanground Academy is one of the 30 Academies sponsored by the Greenwood Dale Foundation Trust (GDFT). Chief Executive of the GDFT, Wayne Norrie, said: “Once again we are proud of the success of the pupils at the Stanground Academy and wish them all the best as they continue their education or enter employment.” www.stangroundacademy.org

Introducing YMCA Cambridgeshire and Peterborough Counselling Service

Don’t suffer in silence, let your voice be heard Did you know that 1 in 10 children aged 5 – 16 suffer from a diagnosable mental health disorder? YMCA believes that every young person should have someone they trust and can talk to. YMCA is proud to announce our brand new ‘Don’t Suffer in Silence, Let Your Voice be Heard’ campaign aimed to encourage children and young people who may be suffering with a mental health disorder to seek help through the YMCA Counselling Service. Neill Summers, Counselling Service Manager, YMCA Cambridgeshire and Peterborough said, ‘We have been offering a

free counselling service in the community for the last 24 years. In 2014/15 the YMCA Counselling service helped 505 children and young people with a variety of mental health disorders including self harming and depression. We have recently seen an increase in primary school children needing help with mental health disorders.’ YMCA Counselling Service is a one-to-one, onfidential service for children and young people up to 25 years old. The sessions are held in safe place where people feel they will not be judged. Our counsellors are trained to support young people through the difficulties they may

face, they will listen and help you look through the options you have in front of you. Is it for you? If you… • Need help with anxiety or depression • Have relationship problems • Are confused about your sexuality or identity • Want to manage your anger • Are experience bullying or abuse • Struggled with changes in life. Jasmine, 16 is one young person who has benefitted from the YMCA Counselling Service. Jasmine said: ‘My YMCA Counsellor saved my life! At 16 I

attempted to take my own life after being sexually abused. I was referred to the YMCA by Peterborough A& E Department. The YMCA provided me with accommodation to get away from my abuser. After learning to express myself through art, I am now in full-time education and have returned home as I had the confidence to speak out against my abuser’.

YOUNG GAZETTE

Peterborough branch of Centre for Young Musicians opens this autumn

C

entre for Young Musicians (CYM), a division of the Guildhall School, is delighted to announce a new branch in Peterborough, which will open in autumn 2016, part of an ongoing national expansion of the Guildhall School’s provision for musicians under the age of 18. A specialist Saturday music school, Peterborough Centre for Young Musicians will enhance progression routes in music education in the area by collaborating with Ormiston Bushfield Academy and receiving support from the Peterborough Music Hub. It will be open to young people throughout the area and will have a bursary scheme to promote access. The weekly sessions, throughout the academic year, begin on 8 October, with a free introductory Open Day on 24 September at Ormiston Bushfield Academy.

Kirsten Barr, Peterborough CYM Centre Manager, commented: “We are very excited to be working in partnership with the Guildhall School and its Centre for Young Musicians on this project. The Peterborough Centre for Young Musicians will provide a great opportunity for young musicians to learn from professional music teachers and performers. It’s really important that they get to meet people who are doing it for real – it gives them those role models they need to keep them going.” Peterborough CYM, open to applicants aged between 7-18 years, will offer focused professional training and an opportunity to bring the city’s talented young musicians together, producing the perfect environment for creative excellence. It will provide a foundation for higher education training options and professional music careers in the future. The young musicians will also have the opportunity to train locally in association with one of

the world’s leading conservatoires with Guildhall School graduates and professors providing expert workshop opportunities and masterclasses throughout the year. Stephen Dagg, Director, CYM National Strategy commented, “I am delighted that the Young Artists’ division of the Guildhall School, in partnership with the Peterborough Music Hub, will be launching a new branch of CYM. Peterborough Centre for Young Musicians will join a vibrant national network of Saturday music centres bearing the CYM name. “Along with young musicians in London, Taunton, Norfolk and Saffron Walden, students attending the Peterborough Centre will enjoy an integrated curriculum of ensembles in a variety of styles and genres, choral training and general musicianship classes on Saturdays during school terms. Individual lessons will also be available.” There are now five branches of CYM outside of London. Saffron Centre opened in October 2015,

with the Guildhall School working in collaboration with Saffron Walden County High and Saffron Hall and receiving support from the Essex Music Education Hub. Norfolk Centre for Young Musicians opened in September 2013 and is managed jointly by the Guildhall School and the Norfolk Music Service with funds made available by the Guildhall School, the Hub and the City of Norwich School. Hestercombe Centre for Young Musicians near Taunton in Somerset opened in March 2014 and is managed by the Guildhall School with bursary funds made available by the Sound Foundation Somerset Music Hub. Each branch mirrors the curriculum of CYM in London in terms of ensembles, choirs and musicianship groups, with individual lessons being added as requests come in. YM is part of the Guildhall School’s Young Artists division, which also includes Junior Guildhall. The Guildhall School of Music & Drama is provided by the City of London Corporation.

Toddlers tuck in at Teddy Bears’ Picnic. A local baby and toddler group celebrated another busy year with a Teddy Bears’ Picnic. Totstop was set up by members of the church 11 years ago to provide a place of play and friendship for local families in a fun, safe and welcoming environment. It has been run by Jane Carter, supported over the years, by different members of the church and volunteers, including mums of children who have attended the group and moved on to school. The picnic was held indoors, rather than the church garden, as sadly there was heavy rain in the morning after a week of glorious sunshine! However, the weather did not dampen the children’s enthusiasm as they enjoyed their usual indoor play activities before tucking into a feast of picnic food alongside their much-loved teddies

and other favourite toys. Parents, grand-parents and carers were also treated to some home-made cakes. The picnic concluded with a sad and tearful farewell to 8 children (and their parents) moving on to nursery or school and also to one of the helpers, Tracey Skelton; the children were given a Bible story book and all the helpers received flowers to thank them for their commitment and hard work. The group runs every Friday, apart from school holidays, from 9:45-11:00 am and costs £1 per family, which includes refreshments. Anyone interested in joining TOTSTOP in September should contact Jane Carter on 01733 310411.

History was made recently when the city’s first female American Football players took to the field at the Peterborough Royals inaugural try-outs. More than 50 local women have contacted the club since its launch in July and this was their first opportunity to wear the helmets and shoulder pads made famous by the stars of the National Football League. The try-outs, led by Head Coach Benita GrantBooker, British American Football’s first female head coach and a pioneer of the women’s game in the United States, took place at Stanground Sports Centre and featured guest coaches from the Great Britain Lions international squad, currently ranked second in Europe. Prospective players were put through their paces with a series of drills focusing on the sports key skills including throwing, catching, blocking and tackling. With players ranging from 5ft and 8st to 6ft plus and over 18st, there’s a position to suit everyone and with no cuts, rejections or exclusions, the club is keen for women put off by more mainstream sports, to give American Football a try. “We’re auditioning for players, not the other way around” said General Manager Mark Kerr “If you’re willing to work hard and learn what we have to teach, there’s a place for you on our team”. It’s not too late to be part of this historic event. To reserve your place, visit www.getready.org.uk

NATURE

A walk in the woods, a picnic in the park, a cycle in the countryside ... let’s go a little wild this autumn! Lorraine Clarke

Rambling in around

Crown Lakes Country Park Crown lakes is a place close to home, being local to Stanground. It’s a popular spot for the people of Peterborough offering a place to play, a family picnic, a bit of pond dipping and to just enjoy the world as it goes by. Crown lakes can be visited through every season but the early summertime brings out the butterflies which include rare breeds such as the black hairstreak and grizzled skipper. The country park is great for cyclists as it offers a 11.5 mile route through the green places of the city. Being the size of about 88 football pitches, it leaves you with plenty of space for any game you like from Frisbee to rounders. Crown Lakes also provides you with a variety of different walking routes on the Walk4Life website. www.walk4life.info

Archers Wood For those of you looking for a safe and suitable place to walk the dog then Archers Wood in Sawtry is ideal, and has free parking. It was once a sanctuary for the highwaymen but in the present day, it’s ideal for gentle walks because of the flat landscape, easy to access routes and network of rides.

Peterborough

Walkers can stroll along the main ride to spot the rare and wild service tree. For people with dogs, it is an off lead area so they can stretch their legs. Archers wood is also a part of the woodlands trust which is a conservation charity in the UK with the main objective to protect and manage the native woodland heritage.

Rutland water walks Just half an hour away is another peaceful place to walk. Rutland is perfect for roamers looking for a long walk which also leads them to the small villages and country lanes. Also, in Rutland there are some famous lanes to embark on which pass through the country. For example, The Macmillan Way, which was originally developed to raise money for Cancer Research, and was opened as a fully signed and waymarked route in 1996. The route passes the south banks of Rutland Water. You can explore the beautiful county on foot, by bicycle and also by car. A great activity to enjoy with family and friends is to embark on a treasure trail and explore the surrounding area, see the sights

and make new discoveries. Treasure trails can introduce you to the most beautiful and historic locations in the Rutland area, whilst outside in the fresh air and having fun!

Fineshade Woods Finseshade woods is a great place for both the young and old, offering lovely walks and cycle paths alongside the woodland wildlife. There are plenty of picnic areas around the woods, a Visitors’ Centre for helpful information, a café, an adventure playground for the kids, cycle-hire and even on-site camping for families who want to stay longer.

Fineshade Woods is located between Corby and Stamford, so a bit further away but worth the distance for all that is available. Admission into the woods is free of charge with parking charged at just £3 for the whole day, which makes Fineshade a low-cost but fun way to enjoy a day in the holidays.

WALKING FOR HEALTH

W

e have continued walking through the summer, and as autumn and winter approach, we need to turn our thoughts to walking in not such good weather. Our numbers continue to increase and we now have 51 walkers registered. Our two walks on Tuesdays and Fridays are approximately 4 ½ miles each; the river walk takes an hour and 20 minutes and the Farcet walk takes one hour and 25 minutes. The age group of the walkers is between 50 and 80 years old.

Stanground Walks

The walk is open to everyone over the age of 18, regardless of their level of fitness. Mums with their children and walkers with dogs are also welcome, the parents or owners are responsible for who they bring with them. We meet at the Sue Ryder Cafe on Whittlesey Way, which is the start and finish point of both walks. Arriving for the off about 10 minutes before the start time to complete new walker registration forms, the walk nominal rolls and the walk briefing, before commencing the walk at 11.00am

OUR AIMS

on Tuesdays and 10.30am on Fridays. Which walk we choose is dependent on the weather conditions and who is walking on the day. Once we arrive back. we all have a quick chat and then retire to the café for some sustenance, where we are well looked after. It is our intention to continue walking throughout the winter and most who regularly attend are keen to do so. Please come along and join us, it is great fun and a good way to make new friends. We look forward to seeing you. By Dave and Marilyn

T

he site’s rugged terrain and 300+ ponds are artefacts of its industrial heritage as a clay pit. However, this uniquely man-made landscape has proven to be perfect for wildlife, chiefly the great crested newt, playing home to the largest population in the world. Froglife and a team of volunteers manage HNR on behalf of the landowners, O&H. Teams

go out every Thursday and two Saturdays per month to cut back the encroaching scrub to burn on bonfires (which are also great for baking potatoes and roasting marshmallows!). Although the volunteer teams were set up to manage the site they quickly evolved into a social event with members dropping in whenever they can and often becoming regulars.

Get involved ... The Nature Reserve is a haven for wildlife with hundreds of ponds, protected for its large great crested newt population and rare aquatic plants including the endangered bearded stonewort. The Reserve is owned by O&H and managed by Amphibian and Reptile conservation charity Froglife. We welcome local people to get involved. At

the moment we are really busy with weekly butterfly surveys, fortnightly reptile surveys and also water vole surveys happening. We monitor hedgehog and other mammal activity and there is a wealth of wildflowers, insect and birds to enjoy. The reserve is a closed site but access is granted to our dedicated team of conservation volunteers, so please join us!

FOOD & DRINK Join the Clandestine Cake Club via Twitter: Cccpeterborough Facebook: clandestestine Website: www.clandestinecakeclub.co.uk/

Clandestine club is

the icing on the cake

The Peterborough branch of the Clandestine Cake Club (CCC) are a group of local bakers, who meet up once a month at a secret location. You don’t necessarily need to be the top chef to join the club. By Vanessa Rosales

E

vent organiser, Katie Brennand, said: “Anyone with an interest in baking can join the CCC and attend the secret meetings or just send us photos of their cake. We are a small and friendly group. We don’t judge, no one is the winner, we just bake a cake and chat, drink tea and of course eat the cake. It must be a whole cake, that’s pretty much the only rule”. The Peterborough group was established two years ago as the nearest CCC in Stamford was too far away and inconvenient for locals to get to. It currently consists of 30 members, around 10 attending the monthly secret meetings with a diversity of men and women ranging between the ages of 18-60.

Katie Brennand added: “I wanted to do it because I love baking but I have made so many new friends. We do stuff outside of the cake club as well”. The CCC, founded by Lynn Hill, host events worldwide, creating the opportunity for people to get together over tea and cake. “If anyone wants to just make a Victorian sponge cake every week and come along, they are more than welcome to”, Katie Brennand said laughingly. “People tend to feel quite relaxed as we are an informal group and try to do fun events like the Glastonbury themed party where we decorated, had a BBQ, cakes, drinks and plenty of music”.

The local cake club arrange meetings at free venues and decide on the monthly themes for the secret meetings together beforehand. Over the last 12 months CCC also attended the Beer Festival and visited most of the community centres and pubs in the Peterborough area. Katie Brennand added: “We always try to find free venues so that people can focus on baking the cake they want and not worrying about the expense. I think it’s really good to have these sort of options locally to support the communities. I strongly encourage locals to join, the more the better.”

Start with something very simple like a Victorian sponge cake or cupcakes. If it goes wrong, it goes wrong, it’s not the end of the world. Basic failsafe cake recipe - Sultana Cake A very simple sultana cake with the added flavours of orange and miixed spice. Some of the fruit may sink to the bottom, but we don’t worry too much about that. It still tastes great. Ingredients • 85g sultanas • Zest of 1 orange • 2tbs orange juice • 85g butter softened • 85g Light muscovado sugar • 2 large eggs • 85g Self-raising flour • 1/4 teaspoon Ground mixed spice • 2tbs demerara sugar Method 1. Get all your ingredients ready and weighed out. 2. Preheat the oven to 170 deg Fan assisted.

3. Have ready 1 x disposable (paper) 7” cake tin or grease and line the base of a (7” 18cm loose bottomed cake tin. 4. Place the sultanas in a small dish. Add the zest and orange Juice. Give everything a good stir and leave to one side for the fruit to plump up, while you get on with making the cake batter. 5. Using a hand held mixer, beat together the butter and sugar until lighter in colour and a little fluffy. 6. Beat in the eggs one at a time, adding a little flour in-between to help prevent curdling. 7. Add the remaining flour and mixed spice. Mix until well combined. 8. Sieve the soaked Sultanas and discard any excess juice. You don’t

want this in the cake batter as it will alter the texture and make it too runny for baking. Add the sultanas to the cake batter and give it a good mix 9. Pour the cake batter into the cake tin, levelling off the top. Sprinkle the demerara sugar evenly on the top. 10.Bake in the centre of the oven for 25 – 30 mins. Testing the centre of the cake with a skewer until it comes out clean. stanground gazette October 2016 www.stangroundgazette.co.uk 23

YOUR GARDEN

Transform

your lawn

The warm late summer/ early autumn temperatures make it an ideal time to sow grass seed. Whether it’s repairing thin, problem areas to completely renovating a tired and worn out lawn, now is a good time to do these jobs.

S

isters Sarah and Jo who run GreenThumb Peterborough and Oundle give their tops tips for doing this work if it didn’t get done in the spring. Jo says “how to seed bare or thin patches is one of our most common enquiries. We often see lawns where grass

seed has just been scattered on the ground and then left not watered making the chances of quick and successful germination really slim”. Here are our 5 easy steps to getting it right: ready to withstand the winter.

1. Prepare the ground With a hand tool, rake away any dead grass or moss to expose the surface of the soil. The soil surface needs to be crumbly (not compact and hard) to ensure good contact with the seed. Fill any sunken holes with soil to bring them up to one level before sowing the seed. 2. Sow the seed Lightly scatter the grass seed but resist putting a thick covering down as this is unlikely to germinate well. As a rough guide the seed should be around 5 and 10mm apart. 3. Cover with a thin layer of soil This only needs to be between 1 and 5mm, just enough to cover the seed for good germination and to help keep the birds off. 4. Keep the ground moist Water is absolutely essential to swell the seed and encourage growth. You must water regularly if the weather is dry but don’t flood or puddle the areas. Ideally, use a sprinkler on a hose and water just enough to keep the surface moist. Little and often is the best method. 5. Mow when the new grass is long enough With your mower on a high setting give the new grass a light cut when it’s about 5cm high. Avoid the new grass getting too long so a first cut when it’s about 5cm high will help the grass thicken, and get stronger, ready to withstand the winter.

Clever Make-up Meet Estée Lauder’s all-new beauty brand, an entire range of clever make-up essentials, The Estée Edit. If you’re makeup obsessed, be prepared to want it ALL! by Vanessa Rosales

Supermodel Kendall Jenner, and world-famous beauty blogger, Irene Kim, guest-edited the new beauty brand, The Estée Edit, to help them design a whole new range of products guaranteed to get you camera-ready. This fabulous new make-up and skincare collection, which launched in late spring, provides products for different beauty personalities: The Barest, The Edgiest and The Go Glow, designed to help you express your attitude through your make-up. It’s no surprise that the line has the Estée Edit Flash Photo Powder, £24 and Flash Photo Gloss, £15, seeing as both social stars know a thing or two about looking flawless in photos. Whilst providing the quality level one would expect from a big brand like Estée Lauder, the collection also proves to be a fun and affordable addition to the mid-range beauty ranks.

CONSUMER ADVICE

As the nights pull in – make sure your elderly neighbours aren’t left in the dark

by Eileen Le Voi

At this point in the year, we start to think about the dawn of a new season – autumn. Along with its rich colours, crisp walks and atmospheric sunlight also comes darker nights, colder weather and later this month – Halloween, heralding trick or treaters.

A

s the nights start to gradually pull in, and with the clocks going back at the end of October, now is the idea time to get into the habit of keeping an eye on an older friend or neighbour. The winter months can be lonely and isolating for those who are less mobile; a knock at the door after dark can be frightening and cold callers on the phone can leave the recipient feeling vulnerable.

The situation isn’t helped by the many rogue traders who try to tout for work in the local area, often suggesting to the home owner that a roof or gutting are in need of repair before winter sets in. This can lead to vulnerable people parting with their cash, and getting nothing but shoddy work and a huge dent in their savings in return. Then there are phone scams, which may on the surface seem to be less intrusive, but are equally as dangerous. These can range from callers claiming to be from companies to check non- existent faults on your computer, banks claiming to check your account details and even socalled medical companies suggesting the need for mobile aid from electric chairs to stair lifts.

With winter on the way, maybe now is a good time to join a Neighbourhood Watch Scheme within your community. Safe Local Trades, covering the PE Postcode area, has worked with many local Neighbourhood Watch groups over the years – including those in Yaxley and Cardea - providing numerous lamp-post signs as well as giving free talks on the dangers of doorstep callers and other scams. It has been proven that areas which operate a Neighbourhood Watch Scheme are less likely to be targeted by crime, rogue traders and distraction burglars. Don’t be fooled by rogue or cowboy traders making an offer that seems too good to be true – as it most probably is.

Share these tips with family and friends, and older relatives:  Be careful what you say about yourself on social media  Set your privacy settings  Keep your media profiles, such as Facebook and LinkedIn to a minimum (your name) and don’t post your address or date of birth  Be very cautious about giving out personal information to people you don’t know – age, address, phone number etc  In public places make sure nobody can hear your conversations or look over your shoulder when banking, shopping or making other confidential online transactions.

If you live or know anyone in the PE Postcode area who would like to inquire about obtaining free Neighbourhood Watch lamp-post signs, please email eileen@safelocaltrades.com or for advice visit www.safelocaltrades.com/consumers/advice/your-neighbourhood-neighbourhoodwatch Safe Local Trades can recommend trusted and reliable tradespeople across a wide range of areas – all of which come with a customer seal of approval.
