Dr Helen Trill DipAc PhD MAcuC is a scientist and registered practitioner of Chinese acupuncture and massage therapy at Bubbling Spring Acupuncture Clinic in Stanground.
Old fashioned thinking about back pain can lead us to make bad health decisions that can block recovery. This week a new acupuncture patient said to me: “people say once you’ve got sciatica you’ve got it for life”. This stuck with me, because how you feel about pain affects your chances of making a speedy recovery. Let me bust a couple of myths: “It’s not safe for a person with back pain to be physically active”. Back pain itself is not harmful. Many people begin to move differently after an episode of back pain due to fear that the activity is dangerous. In the long term this increases the strain on your back. Changing your pain beliefs and taking up exercises
STANGROUND WALKS by David Cussell
As well as our walks on Tuesday, we have now introduced a Friday walk.
Walking for health that improve mind and body awareness, reduce stress, improve flexibility and core strength have been shown to increase back pain recovery. “My back pain is never going to get any better”. Assuming the worst predicts long term pain and disability. Instead, try and practice techniques that will enable you to halt runaway thoughts, such as mindfulness meditation. Recovery from back pain often requires an approach that treats mind and body. And remember, your own attitude makes a big difference.
We meet at the Sue Ryder Cafe in Whittlesey Road on Tuesday at 11.00am and on Friday at 10.30a. Please arrive a few minutes beforehand to complete documentation if you are a new walker. Our membership has continued to grow, even over the winter; we now have 45 registered walkers and depending on the day, the turnout is between 11 and 26 people. Hopefully, with the weather now improving, we can look forward to more people joining us. We have more qualified Walk Leaders to cope with the increase and depending on numbers, we may have to split
the group into two walks. There are three walks that we complete; Tuesday is the River Walk and on Friday we alternate between the Farcet and the Embankment walk. So irrespective of your age or fitness level, change your lifestyle and come and join us. We look forward to meeting you. You will feel better for improving your fitness, meeting new people and being out in the fresh air. There is always a coffee to enjoy in the Sue Ryder Cafe at the end of our walks and time to chat and get to know the other walkers. There is no need for you to be lonely.

Stanground by Brian Holdich
Stanground Bombers Having been born in Church Street, Stanground in 1935, I have vivid recollections of the Second World War years from when it started in1939.
I
can clearly remember the air raid sirens going off at night time, informing all Stanground residents that German bomber aircraft would be coming; it then became a case of getting out of bed immediately and making a mad dash to the air raid shelter. Ours was situated in the living room and happened to be a large metal table which my father had bought. All over the country, brick built air raid shelters were built on streets and roads and obviously some were bigger than others, depending on the population of the area. The metal table in our house would hold my father and mother, their four sons, an evacuee who lived with us and a cousin. How all those people managed to get
under that metal table I’ll never know but they did! After a few minutes, the air raid siren would stop as we waited for the German bomber planes to be heard in the distance, then sure enough we would hear them, very faintly at first, then louder, with the most monotonous noise imaginable involving many aircraft flying together, becoming more thunderous, and every second the noise was absolutely deafening! It seemed that the bomber planes were directly above all the houses in Stanground. I can still visualise my mother nursing her recent arrival Gordon, while clutching her bible and saying the Lord’s Prayer. My father would then remark “Coventry are going to get it again tonight”.

Then the monstrous noise would start to recede as the bombers proceeded to make for the Midlands and when the noise had completely disappeared, the siren would start again informing Stanground that we could return to our beds. Later, returning home, one German bomber off loaded a bomb over Stanground, just missing the church and landing a few hundred yards from our house. Fortunately, no-one was killed and no damage done. Next morning, the bomb crater drew crowds of people full of curiosity. It meant that war had come to Stanground and the enemy above us had a very real threat indeed.

Question Will I get spousal maintenance from my ex and if so, how much? Answer Whether you get spousal maintenance and how much depends on various factors, including the length of your marriage, your own income or ability to work, and your age. If you are entitled to claim spousal maintenance (on top of child maintenance) this would be paid depending on your “needs”, not simply to give you with an equal income to your spouse in the future. Question Are money, pensions and the house split 50/50 on divorce? Answer Many factors will need to be considered before a division of assets can be agreed – for example; the needs of any children; fairness to both parties; the age of the parties; length of marriage; and the ability of the parties to work. There is no formula for financial settlements on divorce and no “one size fits all” answer. Couples may reach an agreement between themselves, they may ask solicitors to negotiate on their behalf, attend mediation or ultimately allow a judge to decide. This really is a specialist area of family law and talking to an experienced family lawyer can really help. Question What if the marital home is not in my name? Answer

It almost certainly makes no difference provided you’ve been married a while. All the assets of a marriage are considered to be joint, no matter whose name they are in. BUT it is very important that you take advice before you think about leaving the house as that will affect some important legal rights. Question Can I change the locks? Answer The general rule is that you should not change the locks on a jointly owned property as you are both entitled to have access. That said, we’d certainly encourage you to do anything needed to protect yourself, your children and your property so if there is a genuine reason to be concerned about this, talk to a lawyer. The bluebell is a member of the lily family and has a clever way of surviving under the dense shade of woodland. The green leaves start to emerge early in the year, well before the leaves open on trees. This means that the bluebell does most of its growing with plenty of light and so replenishes English and Spanish bluebells English bluebell: native bluebells are narrowly bell-shaped, with straight-sided petals, deeply curled back at the tips, majority of flowers droop from one side of the stem.

As bluebells spread very slowly they're considered to be an indicator of ancient woodland sites. 63 new trees to be planted Investors in the Environment’s member businesses join forces for Christmas card recycling scheme in order to plant new trees!
I
nspired by accountancy firm Rawlinsons’ card collecting results back in 2013, for the last few years the green accreditation scheme, Investors in the Environment (iiE), has been encouraging all businesses to get involved with the process of collecting and recycling Christmas cards annually in order to plant trees. This year, iiE member businesses smashed their previous target of 43,000 cards by collecting an amazing 63,000 Christmas cards in spring 2016 for recycling. This will enable 63 new trees to be planted through a scheme run by M&S and the Woodland Trust.
For several years, M&S has been working with the Woodland Trust to promote Christmas card recycling. For every 1,000 cards recycled in-store through the collection scheme, M&S will fund the planting of one tree. “We would like to thank all members and other organisations that took part in collecting the cards and delivering them to M&S stores this year,” explains iiE’s David Knight. “These efforts make a big difference to our environment and, as businesses, we have both the ability and the responsibility to act and make the right changes for the future.”
Thank you to all this year’s fantastic participants: Athene Communications, Cross Keys Homes, City College Peterborough, Citizens Advice Bureau Peterborough, Buckles Solicitors, Budget Paper Supplies, Northampton General Hospital NHS Trust, Bulley Davey, The National Flooring Company, Peterborough Cathedral, Rawlinsons, Roythornes Limited, IPM Global Mobility, Budget Paper Supplies, Vivacity, Peterborough Environment City Trust, and Hunt & Coombs Solicitors.

Spri n g cleaning
HOME COMFORTS
Peterborough’s very own Queen of Clean
I love this time of the year it’s time to have a huge clear out and get rid of any wanted clutter, clothes, accessories and rubbish and give you home a thorough spring clean from top to bottom. Every home needs a spring clean so I have put together some of my top tips to help you on your way. You will feel better about your home after it has had a good clean and looks beautiful. ◆ Firstly, get those windows open and really air the house to get rid of unpleasant smells. ◆ Always dust a room before vacuuming and use a slightly damp cloth as a dry cloth will push the dust around but a damp cloth will enable the dust to it. Microfiber clothes are great for dusting and they don’t leave a streak.
◆ When vacuuming, always work corner to corner using back and forth small strokes to really shift the dirt. ◆ To clean stubborn food from the microwave, place a cupful of water in it on full power; the steam will help loosen the dirt. ◆ Use a toothbrush for hard to reach areas on the fridge, oven and washing machine etc. ◆ To descale the kettle, half fill with white wine vinegar, add water then soak overnight. Before using again boil a few times so you don’t get the vinegar taste.
◆ To keep stainless steel bright and clean, use a good multipurpose cleaner and then shine with baby oil. ◆ Go over the dishwasher edges with a damp cloth and add a tea spoon of baking soda to remove stuck on food stains. ◆ Baking soda is also great for cleaning food storage containers that have had leftovers in them. Sometimes these can really stain, but add 4 heaped spoonfuls of baking soda to warm water and soak overnight and they will come up as new.

Little Owls Day Nursery Little Owls celebrated its second year since opening on 27 January, with a little party and a birthday cake, kindly made by the grandmother of one of our children. All of the children and staff dressed up as their favourite characters and everyone had lots of fun. “We have been very busy looking at the topic: growing. Staff and children have been planting lots of different seeds, such as carrots, cucumbers, tomatoes and cress. This encourages development in lots of areas such as mathematics, communication and language and knowledge and understanding of the world.” Staff are currently preparing a fun filled Easter Tea Party for the children and parents along with a raffle and an Easter Bonnet competition.

Football players needed for friendly 5-a-side games! by Paul Howman We are looking for more players to play in friendly, adult 5-a-side and 7-a-side football games. We currently play on Tuesday and Thursday evenings and some Sundays in Stanground, Hampton & Yaxley but we need more players. If you have previously played 11 aside or 5 aside and are looking
to get back into football, then this is perfect for you. If you’re not currently fit, don’t worry, you’ll soon be back to full fitness. The atmosphere is sociable and relaxed. Many of our footballers play regularly, but there’s plenty of flexibility if you can’t commit to playing every week.

The Cardea Community Sports Association (CCSA) is a group of community volunteers who are responsible for the provision of facilities at our Cardea Community Sports Pavilion on Bellonna Drive, Cardea. The group is still in its infancy and our provision has been minimal over the last two to three years since the group was formed but we have not been idle in that time. The CCSA has been working hand in glove with Peterborough City Council and Clegg Construction who are handling the pavilion build. As you will see the new build is almost complete and the CCSA expect to be in and using the facility in June. At our recent Q and A session at St Michael’s Church School we had a fantastic turnout from local community groups and residents, all keen to understand what the future holds. The CCSA outlined our vision for providing facilities that would allow groups from the community to get involved in sports such as football, cricket and running as well as other key community activities. We also had a look at the plans for the
building and discussed how people could get involved. It was also a great opportunity to discuss further activities coming up very soon with our open day / grand opening of the pavilion scheduled for July. There will be more information on this soon. Watch this space for more info. The CCSA is a very inclusive group and entirely voluntary. We are continuously looking for more volunteers from the local community to come in and make a difference in the group and our wider community. If you would be interested in supporting us by joining the CCSA or if you would be interested in setting up a group that looks at providing cricket, football or running clubs in the community, we would be very keen to hear from you.

CHARITY
Children’s charity seeks riders for Peterborough 100 cycle challenge Popular cycling challenge the Peterborough 100 will take place this summer and children’s charity Action Medical Research is calling for riders to sign up now for one of its most popular events.
T
he event on Sunday, 26 June 2016, offers three options: a Cool 46-mile route that is ideal if you’re new to cycling or haven’t had time to train; a Classic 64-mile route, the perfect introduction to distance riding; or the more challenging Champion option, which covers 101 miles over five counties, ideal for experienced sportive riders. The route, which starts at the Marriott Hotel in Peterborough, takes in the stunning scenery of the Cambridgeshire countryside and surrounding counties where
the quiet lanes serve up a mixture of climbs and descents with ample opportunity to push it on the flats! This event is part of the charity’s popular RIDE100 series of one-day bike rides that take place in fantastic cycling locations across the UK. All include chip timing, food and water stations, marshals and mechanics. Entry to the Peterborough 100 ride is £38 and riders will be raising money to help fund medical research into conditions affecting babies and children – in
2015, almost 5,000 riders helped to raise a total of £286,000. With the help of its supporters, Action Medical Research has played a significant role in many medical breakthroughs for more than 60 years, from the development of the first UK polio vaccines to the use of ultrasound in pregnancy. It is currently funding research into meningitis, down syndrome, epilepsy and premature birth, as well as some rare and distressing conditions that severely affect children.

They will be having a mini beer festival featuring a range of fantastic beers and live music, which they have become well known and loved for. Their quiz is proving more popular each week, held every Tuesday from 8pm in the main bar. Sky Sports HD and BT Sport HD will be shown on all screens over the summer, with the big games being shown on the big screen in the Back Room.
As I mentioned, Charters celebrates its 25th anniversary this year with the Dutch barge called ‘Leendert-R’ being bought by Paul Hook of Oakham Ales in 1991. The barge then made its long voyage across the North Sea to its final resting place on the River Nene. It involved some tricky manoeuvring including ‘sinking’ the vessel to get it under Town Bridge, where it had to be refloated before positioning it where it is now. The old barge had previously carried grain & sand, surviving two world wars before becoming an iconic and popular Peterborough destination for great beers, ales, ciders, food and live music. There will be a beer festival there at the end of March.

Beast Quest: Arcta the mountain giant by Adam Blade
This is a short novel, aimed at readers aged 7 and upwards. It belongs to the hugely successful ‘Beast Quest’ series. It follows a somewhat formulaic construction but bear with me. In this particular story (the third book in a series which numbers over 100) returns to the mythical kingdom of Avantia where an evil spell has been cast by Malvel the Dark Wizard on six beasts. An ancient prophecy tells of a young boy, an unlikely hero, who will rise up and defeat the beasts, freeing Avantia from the threat it faces. Has that hero been found? A good wizard Aduro believes so, and he is a boy called Tom. And so Tom is sent out to try to destroy the beasts. We meet him at the start of this book, having already destroyed Ferno the Fire Dragon and Sepron the Sea Serpent, as he continues on his travels with his horse, Storm. He is joined by his best friend Elenna and her wolf, Silver. As the story opens a strange rock avalanche breaks up a convoy of caravans. Tom encounters Jack, a young child out with his father For ages who is a trader and is told that the avalanche was not cause by any natural source, but by a Giant who lives in the mountain. Can Tom and Elenna complete their quest or will Avantia remain doomed and cursed? I recommend this novel as it only 112 pages long, and is perfect for encouraging reluctant readers, (it is aimed particularly at boys) to read. The setting is typical of older boys’ books, with set pieces which will be familiar to readers of Tolkien and other fantasy adventure stories. Short chapters and a certain poetic style of language make this an easy read for young children. It’s a great introduction to this extensive genre of novels. So if you have a boy who could be described as a ‘reluctant reader’ then this could be the perfect book series for him. Review by Willow Coby

GREAT GARDENS
April tips for your lawn Sarah, Jo and their team say it’s a partnership with customers when it comes to bringing lawns to lush, green life and are always keen to pass on tips and advice. Weeds thrive in the warmer weather – apply a selective herbicide to get rid of them (don’t use something that kills the grass too!). Pulling out dandelions and leaving some of the root won’t get rid of them; they’ll come back with a vengeance! If you don’t want the hassle of doing it yourself get in touch with us at GreenThumb. Use a sharp mower blade – this means you’ll avoid tearing or bruising the grass blades and your lawn will be much smarter for it. Never remove more than one quarter of the height of the grass in one cut – if it’s long, gradually reduce the height as you begin to mow more regularly. Never cut shorter than 25mm (1”) in normal conditions. April’s spring temperature and sunshine is ideal for grass seed germination – for bare patches lightly rake the area to create a seed bed, scatter some seed and cover with a very thin layer of soil. If it doesn’t rain, remember to water the area to ensure germination.

four, positive, self motivated individuals who have the desire to succeed and the will to try. Are you happy with your work and life balance? Would you like to choose your own hours of work and type of income you earn?
Question: We have re-mortgaged our residential property to buy another property to let. Can we claim the additional interest on the mortgage of our main property against the rental income? Answer: If a loan is taken out to purchase a rental property the interest on that loan is an allowable expense. It is irrelevant that the security for the loan is your personal home – what is important is what the funds are used for. So if the funds are used for the property business, then yes the interest is allowable. Tax Relief on a Gift: Are you a business owner? If you are looking for a special gift to give to someone like your loved one, but are not excited by flowers or chocolates, consider spoiling them with a gift of something (other than food, drink, tobacco or a gift voucher) bearing a conspicuous advertisement for your business. A tax deduction may be available if the cost of the gift does not exceed £50. If that special person is an employee of the business, an employment income charge may arise, so take advice. However, legislation is being introduced to provide a tax exemption for qualifying benefits-in-kind costing less than £50.

CONSUMER ADVICE
So, the milder spring weather is finally here, the nights are pulling out, and your outdoor space could do with a little TLC.
Don’t be an April Fool when it comes to doorstep gardeners or landscapers If the effects of winter have taken their toll on your garden or driveway, you may be thinking about calling in the experts to inject a little life back into the space at the rear or front of the house. This could involve laying some turf (or artificial grass), cutting back the hedges, repairing weatherdamaged fences, driveways and patios cleaned? Perhaps a complete overhaul or a shiny new block paved driveway or patio? Whatever the job – big or small – don’t be tempted to give the work to someone who cold calls you at your home, claiming to be ‘carrying out similar work in the area’. Secondly, any offer which appears too good to be true often is. If you are in the market for a new driveway or patio, or are dreaming of a new lawn or garden for the summer, new fascias, whatever it may be – then always use a reputable tradesperson. The door knocking scams of
cowboy landscapers and other outdoor trades are becoming more and more common. Needless to say, it is absolutely mandatory that you never pay anyone cash at the door, especially when they haven’t even conducted any work on your premises. Most driveway scammers of this type won’t even have conducted a full inspection of your property and therefore probably have no genuine idea as to the exact costs involved or the length of time it’ll take. The only way to protect yourself from driveway and patio scams is to always ensure you use a reputable tradesman, like the members of Safe Local Trades. Safe Local Trades puts you in touch with many local reputable garden landscapers, driveway/patio experts, roofline specialists and much more; all are vetted and come recommended by existing customers. No reputable tradesperson will come knocking on your door ‘touting’ for business.

Remember: ○ Don’t be talked into something on the spur of the moment. ○ Don’t take their word for it when they tell you urgent work or repairs need doing. ○ Do ask them to qualify who they are and to leave you a contact number. ○ Never hand over any cash as a deposit for work which they say they will return to carry out. ○ Feel free to ask to see their credentials and / or examples of their work ○ Always ask them politely to leave if you feel uncomfortable with their approach
