Whittlesey Washes South Barrier Bank works Phase two of multi-million pound scheme to start on flood storage reservoir The second phase of a £26-million scheme to strengthen the banks of the Whittlesey Washes (also known as the Nene Washes) is to start later this year. The Environment Agency-led project involves strengthening a 16km stretch of the South Barrier Bank to maintain its structural integrity.

The reservoir protects hundreds of properties in and around Peterborough and its city centre, as well as roads, railways and more than 8,000 hectares of farmland in the fenland area to the south east of Peterborough. Flood water is stored on the Washes when high river levels cannot be released downstream due to high tides. This is when the river is ‘tide-locked’. As the tide recedes, water is released from the reservoir and back into the River Nene. The equivalent of 14,000 Olympic-sized pools of flood water can be temporarily stored on the Washes.

The first phase of works – a 5km stretch between Ring’s End at Guyhirn and Poplar House Farm – began in July 2013. This phase is due to be completed in autumn 2014. The second phase between Eldernell and Stanground will start in summer 2014. The area of works covered by phase two is shown on the attached map in the most westerly box. For public safety, a section of the Green Wheel cycle route between Stanground and Whittlesey will have to be closed. Details of the closure will be clearly displayed on notice-boards at each end of the working area. We are working with various groups and organisations that will be affected by the works. As the Washes are an internationallyimportant site, the majority of the work has to take place in the summer and early autumn to avoid disturbing breeding and over-wintering bird populations. The Whittlesey Washes project is being carried out by the Environment Agency with support from partners, including:

YOU SAW ME! Your potential customers will see you if you advertise here.

We are holding public drop-in events and everyone is welcome. Come along and see us to find out more about the works. You will have the opportunity to see our designs and discuss the scheme with members of the project team.

Community News A new era is hatching at Sacrewell Easter 2014 is the dawn of a new era at Sacrewell Farm near Wansford. On Saturday, April 5th, at 9.30am the new Sacrewell Play Barn will officially open in all its glory. Featuring a three-story Sacrewell themed play frame, Didi Car track and giant slide, the new facilities will boost the fantastic offers already available at the farm.

Rambles create new insight into Sacrewell Sacrewell Farm, in association with Riverford Organic and Natural England, have launched two new ramble routes around the 550-acre site. Starting from the Farm Centre, the two-mile and one-mile walks take you around the farmland which is leased by the William Scott Abbott Trust to Riverford Organic to grow their vegetables. Ramblers will be able to view a number of the fields farmed on the site, as well as taking in the Riverford offices and the abundance of wildlife around the Farm. Ramble maps can be picked up from Reception at Sacrewell Farm and Country Centre and will guide you around the two routes. Sensible footwear must be worn at all times and the Farm will not be held liable for any damage.

April 5th also marks the first day of the locally renowned Big Bunny Hunt. Explorers will be taken on a bumpy tractor ride up to the woods where they will hunt for a hidden egg and present it to the Easter Bunny, who will in turn exchange it for a delicious chocolate surprise. Our lambing event coincides with Easter this year making a visit to Sacrewell even more worthwhile over the Easter holidays. There

will be lamb feeding shows every day, where you can learn all about how we raise our orphaned cade lambs and maybe even have a go at bottle feeding one yourself! To round off the holidays we’ll be hosting a Sunflower Sunday on April 27th, where you can come to the farm and plant a seed in our flower bed with your name next to it. Over the summer you can visit your sunflower to see how tall it grows!

The Farm is open daily from 9.30am – 5pm. For more information about events please visit www.sacrewell.org.uk or call 01780 782254

Community News We’ve had our new church logos for almost a year now and they are beginning to get onto everything we print. I hope you like them because they were designed specially for us by a member of the Stanground community. Each of the three churches (St John’s and St Michael’s in Stanground and St Mary’s at Farcet) has a cross made of hearts in a single colour, then we have a logo for our group of churches that brings all the colours together.

Stanground Church In my last school assembly I was explaining to the children that the cross is made of hearts because the ‘heart’ of the Christian message is that Jesus showed his love for us by dying for us on the cross. That is what we remember in church this month. On Good Friday, in St John’s Church we will be having a special event at 12 noon. It is a drama called ‘the Passion’. Young people from the community will act out the events of the day at various points around the church and we will follow the story as they lead us. The Passion is very moving, and though the subject is serious we do it in a way

that is suitable for children as well as adults. Hot Cross buns, tea and coffee will be served afterwards. Then on Easter Day, both of the churches will be in celebration mode for the biggest day of our year when we celebrate the victory of love over hate and good over evil! Its a WOW thing! You can find out more by keeping an eye on our website and our facebook page. With Christian love and prayers

St John’s Church, Stanground on 18 May. The service is being organised by Anglia Co-operative Funerals in Peterborough Road, Stanground, in memory of local people who have passed away over the last 12 months. The service starts at 3pm on May 18th and will be led by the Rev Anne Shorter. There will be an opportunity to light a candle in memory of loved ones and their names will also be read out during the service. Refreshments will be served after and funeral director Ian Larter said: “We will be inviting families in Stanground and surrounding areas for whom we have arranged funerals to enable them to remember their loved ones and meet with other local families in a similar position. It is a very poignant event and allows people who may still be grieving to come and pay their respects. We hold these services twice a year and feel they help families to move forward with their bereavement. They are open to everyone in the Stanground area, not just those we have invited. If you’d like to find out more about the May 18th service, contact Ian at Anglia Co-operative Funerals in Stanground on 01733 426860.

Powerleague Colts Black Team Spotlight

Sports

Steve, Manager/Coach of Powerleague Colts Black U12s gives a little insight about how they formed and progressed over the years. It was May 2010 and after watching my sons football training session and feeling a little disappointed with how things were being done, I asked my eldest son Lewis, if he would like me to be his manager. He was very happy and thought it was a great idea. I knew that I had to get my lad back enjoying his football, or he would be lost to the game forever; like so many small children who have too much pressure heaped upon them by parents and coaches who insist on a ‘win at all costs’ mentality, taking all the fun out of the game. A few phone calls later to the club secretary and the junior alliance league and Farcet United under 10s were born. All I needed now was players. The next day parents were spoken to at both Farcet and Oakdale schools and a training session hastily arranged. At the first session we had 10 kids of various abilities turn up, some of whom had never played football;

whilst some had played for the last 3 years. I told parents and kids that it would all be about fun, enjoyment and doing things the right way. We wouldn’t have any superstars in our team; they would all be treated equally and game time would be shared.

The only things I would insist on were, we play to enjoy, we always give 100% to each other and win, lose or draw, be gracious and look forward to coming back next week. After two seasons unfortunately Farcet United junior section were forced to fold, so we as a team moved to Powerleague Colts. We are now in our 3rd season and the improvement from that first training session to now is easy for all to see, but our philosophy is still the same. Results still play 2nd fiddle to fun and enjoyment. However, as they get older, results will start to matter

to the lads, this season they have performed really well and reached quarter finals in two cups and are still in with a chance of promotion. If they achieve this then great, if they don’t then so what; they are still kids and have their adult life to worry about winning and taking things seriously. I would like to take this opportunity to say thanks to the Powerleague Colts committee for all they do for the boys, not just my team but all the junior section. Without their time, hard work and commitment these kids wouldn’t have the chance to play the beautiful game.

I would also like to thank my team sponsor Steve Dunham of Hereward Digital ariel and satellite installations for his continued support this season and the purchase of a new team strip.

Community News Cardea update

by Kate Ferris

Over here in Cardea, we are all hoping that spring is just around the corner and drier, sunnier days will soon be here. We really seem to get the brunt of the wind blowing across the fens and this very often blows our wheelie bins to the other end of the street on bin day. I nearly took off while I was walking my dogs the other day, thought I was flying to Farcet! Living with building work going on all around us in winter makes for lots of mud, so you can spot a Cardean by their shoes and cars. Although the children seem to love the puddles, you’ll also notice that the favoured footwear of our younger generation is WELLIES. Speaking of the warmer weather, we have been discussing future events at the Residents’ Meeting and coffee mornings. We have many ideas in the pipeline and as soon as details are finalized we will announce and advertise our Summer Community Event. We have decided that it will be a family fun orientated affair. We just need to order a decent summer and get as many of our 670 + households to join in ! Speaking of the number of houses now here at Cardea, we are holding the first Cardea Coffee Morning on March 22nd at St Michaels Church School between 10 to 12; to enable all residents to pop in, have a cuppa and meet their neighbours. We can also discuss plans for our future and allow everyone to have their say. We really hope to see as many people as possible. Although there are monthly Cardea Residents’ Association meetings, we appreciate that midweek evenings are not convenient for those with young families, so please come along and bring the little ones as there will be room for them to play while you have a chat. Looking forward to meeting you.

Accessing adult social care services Who to contact, where to find information Social Care is personal and practical support to help people live their lives by supporting them to maintain their independence and dignity and ensuring they have choice and control over the support they receive. Many people don’t think about social care until they or someone they know need support, and then find they are unsure about where to find information or how to access the services they need. What should I do if I think I or someone I know may require social care support? Adult social care provides advice and services to people who may need help because of their age, physical disability, sensory impairment, learning disability or a mental health issue. The first step to accessing services is to arrange an assessment by adult social care to establish your specific needs. This is free, irrespective of your income, and available

to all. It will determine if you are eligible for a Personal Budget – an allocated sum of money with which to plan the support you need. Alternatively, your circumstances may mean you are classed as a ‘self-funder’ with the means to pay for your care. Getting in touch Adult social care customer services are the initial point of contact for all social care enquiries. The trained staff knows about the services available and can offer advice on who else may be able to help. Call them on 0345 045 5202. When you contact customer services they will ask you for some basic details, including basic financial information. The aim is to maximise your independence and ensure you receive the support you need. This could include information and advice, re-ablement – individually tailored shortterm support to help you become as independent as possible following an illness or operation, or a social care assessment. If you think you may need help with mental health issues you should contact your GP in the first instance.

Need a neighbour?

“I worked full time, then part time, in Children’s Services and I still don’t feel ready to be at home every day.”

Barbara moved to Stanground last July and is enjoying getting to know the area. I really believe in the value of community, especially now that families are often geographically spread. Family Law Worries – Court is NOT the only option When a couple separate decisions have to be made including arrangements for the children of the family and how to divide the finances to ensure everyone’s housing and income needs are met now and in the future. In an ideal world couples would sit down together and work out an agreement, but sadly that is not always possible. There are several options available to couples which do not include court proceedings. These include: Solicitor Negotiation - where each party instructs a solicitor to enter into negotiations on their behalf in the hope of reaching a mutual agreement; Mediation - where an independent mediator holds a number of meetings with the couple jointly in the hope of assisting them to agree arrangements directly; Collaborative – where each party instructs a solicitor separately and the four of them meet to discuss matters directly in the hope of reaching an agreement; Court proceedings – a last resort if no other option allows the parties to reach agreement on all issues Abby Smith of Setfords Solicitors always approaches such matters in a sensitive but proactive way in the hope of assisting clients to reach a swift, amicable agreement but which best protects their needs now and in the future. Abby Smith has over 10 years experience in dealing with such issues and is an an accredited specalist in family law. For any Family Law queries or information about Family Mediation please contact Abby Smith for a FREE initial telephone consultation. Thereafter meetings can be arranged at a time and venue convenient to you, with very competitive charging rates.

Gardening Special Spread a little beauty round your garden with baskets and containers One of the easiest ways to incorporate colour and balance to your home and garden is to invest in hanging baskets and planting containers.

The patio is one of the areas in the garden that stands out and gets used the most, so it’s worth putting in a little time and effort to make it as pretty and productive as possible.

Whether you live in a small townhouse or a country cottage, anyone can try these simple, highly enjoyable methods of gardening, and it only takes around 20 minutes to plant up a container or basket.

There are many great tips and tricks you can do with your patio to make it stand out as a place full of flowers and become a welcoming place to relax on those lovely summer days.

When the time comes to select your plants, it is worth carefully considering the flowering plants you choose. Select colours that work well together and plants that flower reliably.

Vibrant pots make all the difference to a patio or doorstep, adding colour and interest for the entire summer.

Lots of plants grow well in containers and hanging baskets. Some great summer plants to include are: lobelia, fuchsias, pansies, petunias, sweetpeas and snapdragon and ivy. Trailing plants are also an excellent addition to any hanging-basket.

Creating your perfect garden

The perfect patio

Hanging-baskets really are very easy to create, and can be fixed to most walls and exterior buildings. Pots, troughs, ½ barrels and window boxes can come in a range of shapes and sizes, making them ideal for any smaller space you think needs spruced up. With such a range of containers, you are likely to find one that will fit you needs perfectly. The sizes of plants should also be considered – you don’t want a tiny plant in a huge pot, or a large plant in a pot too small, this will lead to it being re-potted often.

Colour hit

Create impact, and a big splash of colour, by grouping several pots together – this looks far more impressive than a single container dotted here and there. Fill pots with summer bedding plants such as Geramiums, Petunia and Busy Lizzies which also develop and flower quickly. Think vertical Disguise ugly walls and fences with clever plant solutions. Consider a ‘green wall’ approach, which uses year-round herbaceous plants for a continuous display, or cover the space with lots of hanging baskets filled with colourful summer bedding. Either will bring about a transformation. Sitting comfortably Something to sit on is the most important part of a patio, so you need to get it just right. Decide whether you want a table and chairs for dining, or comfy sofas or loungers for replacing, then consider the style.

Gardening Special

Care of your April garden After recent rain, it’s good to see some dry weather, but, of course, it is the month of April showers! Do not be deceived into thinking that your plants do not need watering. Look out for new seed beds, and dry, windy spots that are vulnerable to evaporation. However, the sun will be shining through and bringing longer days and warmer spells, so be sure to keep your greenhouse ventilated to prevent scorching. Late frosts can still occur so if this is forecast, cover up vulnerable plants. Make sure you keep on top of the many tasks this month, including: • Sowing new lawns or repairing bare patches • Feeding hungry shrubs and roses • Sowing hardy annuals and herb seeds • Protecting fruit blossom from late frosts • Keeping weeds under control • Increasing the water given to houseplants Now is the best time to apply weed and moss killer to lawns. Once this has been applied, you can lightly rake off the debris with a metal grass rake. Mow the lawn as it grows, repairing any humps and bumps by peeling off the top layer and lowering the soil. Apply a thin layer of good top soil or compost to low areas and spread a little seed. This will make mowing easier and eliminate scalping. Turfing is ideal at this time of year. Once it has been prepared and laid you can let the showers do the hard work. Turfing can be laid all year but has various disadvantages depending on the time of the year. Tree work will continue throughout spring. Watch out for nesting birds and ensure that work carried out do not interfere with them. Check for any storm damage over the windy months that you may not have noticed and removed dead wood or damaged limbs before new growth adds weight to them.

Papworth Trust

How does your garden grow? Big or small, charity Papworth Trust hopes gardeners will be ‘open’ to summer fundraising bid. “How many kinds of sweet flowers grow in an English country garden?” A line from an old folk song, but also a question people across the region just may find the answer to this summer. Charity Papworth Trust is looking for people in the community to open their gardens in aid of its work supporting disabled people. Heart’s ease and phlox, meadowsweet and lady smocks, lupin or tall hollyhocks, to echo the words of the song. However your garden grows, the Trust would like to hear from you. Papworth Trust Community Fundraiser Andrea Chupacova said: “We are looking for enthusiastic gardeners who are willing to open their gardens this summer and help us to raise vital funds. It’s a great way to celebrate the beauty of English country gardens – whether big or small – and support our work with disabled people and their families at the same time.” If you would like to open your garden on behalf of Papworth Trust any time between May and the end of August 2014, then contact the Papworth Fundraising Team on 01480 357206. The team will be able to help you with marketing, publicity and ideas to raise funds such as raffles and teas.

Gardening Special “Gardening is a way of showing that you believe in tomorrow”

Your April Garden

Please do not forget to water and feed the birds.

Let us all hope for a sunny April which will allow us to sow new lawns and repair established ones. For a good finished lawn, preparation is everything. As we have had so much rain lawns will require feeding with high nitrogen fertiliser that will replace the nutrient that has been lost. Prune forsythia and winter jasmine soon after flowering, deadhead daffodils, tulips and pansies. In the vegetable garden, continue to plant out seed potatoes and when buying these, ensure that you are buying “certified seed” do not just go and buy the cheapest. Keep an eye on the weather forecast for frost and cover with fleece if a frost is imminent. Should you be unlucky and your potatoes do get frosted you can try and save them by spraying the tops with water before the sun gets on them. I have known this to work. In the greenhouse you can keep frost out, sow tomatoes ensuring that they have plenty of light. Plant up new shrubs, conifers, perennials and alpines and watch out for aphids (greenfly and blackfly) as we have not had a lot of cold weather to inhibit them.

We get asked a great deal this time of year about compost - which is the best - peat based or peat free? My answer to this is that I have tried most peat free compost on the market and to date has found that most are inferior to peat based compost. Many gardeners like me hate all the things that you find in the peat free compost such as lumps of wood, straw bits etc. I also find the consistency in both quality and performance quite poor whilst a good peat based compost such as that produced by Clover of Ireland takes some beating and helps the gardener to be a success, so always look out for the best quality brands and remember you only get what you pay for! The nutrient level in compost such as multipurpose lasts about three to five weeks dependent upon the amount of water or rain as this leaches the nutrients out and therefore requires supplementary feeding. I would like to point out that this is my own personal opinion based on my personal experience but welcomes the day when good peat free compost is available. Having visited the peat bogs over the years, I have always found that once the peat is harvested, the bogs are restored to the benefit of a wider variety of birds and wildlife.

One other question that is often asked is why do my bedding plants take a long time to grow once planted? The answer to this question is more often due to the large growers who supply the retail outlets, spraying the plants with a growth regulator which although does benefit the plant in some ways, can result in the plant standing still for a long period of time particularly if sprayed too much. Until the growth regulator has worn off the plants will stand still. The reason for spraying the plants is to hold the plant back in order to give the retailer longer to sell the plant, reducing the work in keeping them looking good. It is claimed that it does make the plant branch out. Personally, I do not like the use of growth regulators and prefer to go along with the growers that do not use these growth regulators but a method called “Dif” which is basically controlling the growth naturally without causing any form of check. This is done by the “dif” method (difference) in temperatures. When buying plants, particularly bedding and basket plants always ask your supplier if controlled release fertilisers have been used in the compost as this will ensure a good start and finish to your plants. And one for the children.... Q. Why do potatoes make good detectives? A. Because they keep their eyes peeled!”

However, how many of us can actually cook an authentic curry? The UK’s love affair with Indian cuisine shows no signs of fading. Few can resist a spicy curry, comforting dhal, or fragrant chutney. However, how many of us can actually cook an authentic curry? I would class myself as a relatively good cook, yet I wanted to learn how to cook the perfect curry. Schools

STANGROUND’S

GOT TALENT

YOUR CHANCE TO WIN A £15 VOUCHER!

Southfields Primary School On Friday 28th February, children from Southfields Primary School with banners, and supported by Councillor Rush, PCSO Umar Shabir, Jenny Wright from the Peterborough City Council Road Safety Team and three members of staff were campaigning for parents to think about where and how they park. The children were chanting ‘We are here, keep the zig zags clear!’ and encouraging parents to think about parking respectfully and appropriately to ensure that everyone arrives at school safely. We have had a number of vehicles who stop to drop children off very close to the school entrance, some even parking on the pavement and grass verges. Children trying to cross the road are having to step out past the parked cars before they can see if the road is clear.

This new feature is for you the local people to shout about something you may be proud of, and/or to say WELL DONE to someone who has achieved something special. From your child’s football or dancing or swimming trophy, to someone passing their driving test or exams – WE want to tell everyone about the good things that happen in your area and showcase YOUR talent. Each month a winner will be chosen at random and the winner will win a £15 voucher for Frankie and Benny’s. Please include a photo, full name of the person to be entered and a short description about why. Please entitle email Stanground’s Got Talent and send to us at

editorial@stangroundgazette.co.uk

The children have been disappointed to see that the cars parking on the verges caused deep ruts in the grass which then fill with water and become huge muddy puddles. They do not think that this looks a very nice as an approach to school when they have worked so hard in the community planting bulbs to try to make the area around school look special.

There is a ‘Park and Stride’ Car Park for the use of parents in Glatton Drive which is just a two minute safe walk away from the school and the children want to encourage parents to park there to reduce the parking problems at the school entrance.

Schools St John’s Church of England Primary School The O2 Arena By Suzi Brown Year 6

Stanground Academy What a difference a sponsor can make… …from ‘Notice to improve’ to ‘Good’ in just four terms

Following an inspection that took place on 11 and 12 February 2014, Ofsted has judged the overall effectiveness of the Stanground Academy to be good. Inspectors scrutinised records and documentation, observed lessons and met with pupils and staff to get their views. The inspection is an independent assessment of the effectiveness of the Academy which includes: • the achievement of pupils; • the quality of teaching; • the behaviour and safety of pupils; and • the quality of leadership and management. The Academy was judged to be ‘good’ across of these four areas and the lead inspector noted that the transformation in the Academy was nothing short of “miraculous”. The inspectors made several references to the strong leadership and governance which they believe are the reasons for the Academy’s success: “The Principal’s good leadership has, in a short space of time, created a positive environment in which to learn.” “Standards have risen due to the relentless actions of senior leaders to secure good behaviour and teaching.”

One fantastic amazing day was the O2 Arena. The lights sparkled, the crowds cheered. It was a once in a life time opportunity. The place was a big thrill and it was one of the best things I have ever experienced. When it began I was overwhelmed with joy and excitement. I was shocked to see all the happy faces on people. All the songs were funny and great to sing. My friends were having the time of their lives. Near the end I got tired but got convinced to get up and let all of my left over energy loose. Lots of people came in the fabulous YV t-shirts and it was outstanding to be chosen to participate in this school and worldwide event. My life has changed since that event and will always stay that way. If I get the chance to do it again I will.

St Michael’s Pre-School What a wet February it’s been! We have free-flow play here at St Michael’s Pre-School, so whatever the weather we have lots of activities planned for outdoors. Our children have really enjoyed our puddle powder paint activity, where we used powder paint in different puddles and created a beautiful rainbow with our feet! Our lesson plan for this activity was even featured in national teaching magazine, Teach Nursery, in November 2013, we’re thrilled! This is great fun for children and adults, and if you don’t mind a bit of mess, easy to do at home too.

“The academy sponsor and an advisory council of governors provide good support and challenge for senior leaders. They maintain a close check on the work of the academy.” When the Greenwood Dale Foundation Trust (GDFT) opened the Stanground Academy in April 2012, it promised to significantly improve the ethos for learning, results and life chances of pupils when compared to those of the predecessor college. This report confirms that it is doing exactly what it said it would do and found that: “Older students who transferred from the predecessor school did so with significant gaps in their reading, writing and mathematical skills. In its first full year as an Academy, most of these gaps have been filled. Good teaching and support for students are increasingly enabling them to make good progress. The proportion of students attaining five GCSE A* to C grades including English and mathematics is in line with the national average. This represents good progress.” Ged Rae, Principal, said: “The result of our recent Ofsted inspection is exceptional when we consider that the Academy has only been open for a little over four terms and that the predecessor Stanground College had faced a significant number of challenges. Our Academy has made rapid progress and the staff and pupils are rightfully proud of their achievements. “Our relentless commitment to the highest standards of education is evident when you look at our examination results. In 2013, 62 per cent of pupils gained five or more GCSE passes (A*-C) including English and mathematics which represents a dramatic 24 per cent increase from the 39 per cent pass rate achieved in 2012.” Barry Day, Chief Executive of the GDFT, said: “I am absolutely delighted with this inspection outcome which is a true reflection of how hard pupils and staff have worked throughout the year. I would also like to thank the parents who have been supportive in ensuring that their children fulfil their potential. “The Academy’s brand new buildings opened in September 2013 following a £24 million pound investment by Peterborough City Council. The new high quality learning environment offers young people in Peterborough an excellent educational experience.” Facebook “f ” Logo

Zumba for the kids

Health & Beauty

Coming to Hampton Leisure Centre for the first time, there are classes for Kids Zumba, Jnr Zumba Kids & Zumba Teenagers. Finally, up to the minute exercise classes for our children is being offered by Zumba instructor Sonja Allen, who lives in Hampton and recognised the need for some fun after school clubs.

I asked Sonja, why the age was restricted to under 15 years, and she explained that once they reach the age of 16, young people are able to attend a main stream Zumba class on their own.

The classes will be launching on Tuesday April 22nd at the Dance Studio at Hampton Leisure Centre, Clayburn Road.

Zumba for Teenagers (12-15 years olds)

Hampton will have the first ever Zumba Teenagers class in the county. Sonja approached Zumba Head Office to ask why there wasn’t a programme for the teenagers. She asked permission to launch her very own class aimed at the 12-15 year olds.

Wednesdays from 5pm - 6pm starting on April 24th. Dance Studio, Hampton.

Zumba Kids Jnr

(4-6 years olds) Thursdays 3.45- 4.40pm. Dance Studio, Hampton. Not only will they learn Zumba moves and enjoy different types of music from all over the world, they will also learn about different countries and how the children there use dance to make friends and communicate.

Zumba Kids

November 23-December 21

When you look back at what you’ve been through recently, its enough to take your breath away, but it has also shaped you in to who you are today. Take nothing for granted and squeeze every drop out of life and all it has to offer. Finances are becoming more manageable, make sure you save as much as possible to avoid a repeat performance of previous difficulties.

Capricorn December 22-January 20

Surprise changes in working life will give you a much needed confidence boost, for far too long you have held back for fear of the unknown, this month embrace new opportunities and allow yourself to think outside of the box. Watch out for injury that could set you back somewhat, take note of warning signs.

Aquarius January 21-February 19

You should be in no doubt as to someones feelings for you, whether you are being chased by an admirer or pursued by a potential colleague, you have all the qualities they are seeking, enjoy being the object of desire. Discussions regarding home life need careful consideration, don’t rush into anything.

Pisces February 20-March 20

You have seen someones very true and raw colours recently and now you must decide how you want a certain situation or friendship to pan out, you cannot ‘un-know’ things but you can choose your next move, do you really want to be associated with such tricky people? Pay close attention to legal papers and read everything before you sign.

If it is your birthday this month....

You are feeling more optimistic and happy than you have done for a very long time, don’t think that this is just a flash in the pan moment, this feel good factor is here to stay. For far too long you have lived in a shadow and have always aimed to please others, forget them, this is about your life and your happiness, aim high now, you can get what you so dearly want.

Fun at

Folly Farm

My name is Mollie Crombie, I have been riding at Folly Farm for the past year. I have learnt lots of new things such as, cantering, jumping, scissors, teardrop and around the world. I have also been to many pony days which are normally in the school holidays. The Pony Days have a set theme like Halloween, Christmas and Easter. Folly Farm also does really good birthday parties for children. I want to have mine there this year. On the Pony days we take part in a lot of gym caners and when we do these we get the chance to win rosettes. I have 3 of these. On a Wednesday after school Folly Farm has a pony club. In the club we learn how to groom, make the feeds, how to put the rugs on, and general horse facts. In Pony club you also earn badges there is going to be a badge presentation soon. I hope I got lots. You also get the chance to go to competitions. Since starting at Folly Farm I can now groom, put on a rug and tack the horse ready for riding. My best friend Hannah has also starting to Folly Farm and she really loves it too. My favourite horses there are Roly, Hollie, Dolly, Doddles and Maverick. Folly Farm horses are so friendly they do not bite or kick. I love to go to Folly Farm and enjoy helping out on Saturdays.
