Special Hough

Good progress has been made during April and May with two sections of the wall nearing completion. Once the backfilling is finished, only the top of the wall will be visible. The construction of the third section of wall, by the Stanground Sluice, is underway. The bank works are progressing well towards Stanground. All of the material has been delivered and placed, and top-soiling is now underway. You can see from the photograph the matting being used to encourage grass growth, which contributes to the stability of the bank. Vandalism & trespassing There has been a positive response to the April newsletter regarding the trespassing and vandalism issues. The security cameras are working well. However, over the May Bank Holiday weekend, children were seen playing on the construction machinery at Stanground. Parents are strongly urged to keep their children safe by highlighting the dangers of construction sites. In June significant damage was caused to the grass matting and bank works between Stanground and Ball Bridge. This kind of activity can cause delays and creates extra costs to the project.

Farcet’s Rhubarb Fayre Farcet’s Rhubarb Fayre, back after a 20 year break, proved a great success, despite the unpredictable English weather.

ccording to local residents and old newspaper articles, it seems the Fayre’s origins go back over 100 years, originally celebrating Tillaging. Some of the historic photos can be found in Farcet and its Treasures by resident Veronica Woodcock. The parade was well attended, with Twist & Twirl Majorettes leading the way, followed by Farcet pipe band, Brownies, local farmers with their new and vintage tractors, Mr Rhubarb, The Rhubarb King & Queen; even Batman and Captain America couldn’t miss out on this one. Steve Davis, the previous organiser, officially opened the Fayre, crowning the Rhubarb King & Queen. Next year other villages are being encouraged to get involved, maybe bringing their own Prince or Princesses? This was a great event, supported by sponsors, local residents, their friends and neighbouring villages joining the daytime and evening entertainment. The organisers have been overwhelmed with positive feedback and have already started planning next year’s Fayre.

In Memory of Clare On 4 July Stanground resident Anne Rowcliffe released into the Stanground skies 60 yellow helium balloons with little yellow ducks attached.

T

he project is in memory of her daughter Clare, who died while awaiting a lung transplant. The Little Yellow Duck Project involved leaving hand-crafted ducks for people to find. The finders are then invited to register their duck on a website which details the importance of blood, organ and tissue donation and has a link to the organ donation register. (Thelittleyellowduckproject.org). Anne chose to release 60 balloons and ducks as she had just reached her 60th birthday and the following week was Organ Donation week.

If you would like to get involved, email: Rhubarbfayre@hotmail.com

If you were lucky enough to find a yellow duck then please let us know by tweeting @stangroundmag or through our Facebook page with a picture of the duck.

Stanground & Farcet C of E Churches It was 1978, during Peter Gilding’s time as vicar of Stanground, that a relatively new church member, Fred Spooner, was invited to become Churchwarden and for the past 37 years Fred has worked tirelessly for St John’s Church and for the parish of Stanground.

Ever so many of you will know him from his warm welcome at weddings and christening and funerals. What you might not know is that for much of this time he was also church treasurer and the person who did the flower arrangements! For many years he

and his wife Liz organised the annual flower festival at St John the Baptist day. A Churchwarden is a very ancient role and every year the warden has to swear allegiance to the Bishop, so it is no surprise that when he heard of Fred’s retirement, our Bishop asked us to present him with the Long Service Award. The photo left shows Bishop John Flack presenting the award to Fred Spooner at a special service on St John the Baptist’s Day.

Remember when … St John’s church decided to make Fred’s presentation part of a celebration weekend remembering past times. On Saturday the church was full of memories and scores of people enjoying the old registers, Brownie records, school registers, wedding pictures, albums of events and masses more. There was even an original guide book to the village printed in 1896.

O

ne very special item was the photo of Pam Hagon’s wedding taken by the Evening Telegraph photographer in 1957 (see page 6). In those days it was a daily paper and nearly all weddings and christenings were featured regularly. Also in those days a wedding was a real village event and everybody turned out to see it. Pam also sent in a lovely piece with her memories of Stanground over the years. Here is what she says about The Stanground Feast, celebrated for hundreds of years at the end of June, St John the Baptist Day. ‘The big event of the year was St John’s Church Feast Day when all the village families turned out in their Sunday best and walked to the vicarage gardens – there were side shows and stalls selling all

kinds of things. The boys from Chapel Street School used to have boxing matches while the girls would do country dancing – much to the delight of the crowd. Teas were served under the beautiful copper beech tree which still proudly stands. The local men played skittles for a real pig and in the evening local pubs did a roaring trade; The Woolpack, Ferry Boat, Anchor, Golden Lion, Carpenters Arms and The Bell. The Stanground Feast day brings back wonderful memories to me. A close community gathering.’ The current vicar, Revd Anne Shorter, has a dream that one year soon we might be able to recreate The Stanground Feast in a new way for a new generation to keep that wonderful community spirit of Old Stanground alive. What do you think?

New Garden at Baptist Church On Sunday 28 June the much anticipated new garden was officially opened at Stanground Baptist Church.

T

he Rev. Sheila Martin led a short service of thanksgiving and dedication, followed by the cutting of the ribbon by local Councillor Brian Rush and the sharing of home-made cakes and scones with the many guests. It had been raining all morning but cleared in time for everyone to enjoy the new garden and to appreciate all the hard work undertaken by volunteers and A1 Artificial Grass. The garden is the result of generous donations from Church members, a legacy and donations from

John Lewis, the Local Council Community Fund and Nisa. All the plants were kindly donated by Dobbies Garden Centre. With its raised decked seating area and artificial grass play area, surrounded by shrubs and flowers, it is already being enjoyed by the Church members and various community groups which meet at the Church during the week, such as Brownies, Foodbank, Totstop parent and toddler group and the Coffee-morning.

If you wish to visit any of the groups, please see the notice board, or www.standgroundbaptistchurch.org.uk If you wish to view the garden, please call 310411

t present, he combines both these jobs: teaching for a few days each week in the Peterborough area and working in church life the rest of the time. For 18 months, he has had the wonderful privilege of taking monthly assemblies in St Michael’s school, Cardea, telling the children about Jesus – the main passion of his life; he has also enjoyed another of his passions in the school: coaching football at a weekly club! Over the next few months, we want to introduce some of the folks who come to Cardea Community Church – ordinary people who’ve found the difference in life that knowing God makes. Please feel free to join us as we receive, each week, a kind and friendly welcome from the Morrison’s staff. T: 01733 204139 or 07432130565 E: cardeacommunitychurch@outlook.com

FINANCIAL

MONEY MATTERS

by Pete Bird, Bird & Laws Certified Public Accountants

Do you have any tax or business questions, please email Pete Bird of Bird & Laws on info@birdnco.co.uk and, if of general interest, it will be published here!

Question: I’ve been told that HMRC have made a U-turn on self-assessment late filing penalties?

Success for Stanground Athletes

Answer: Yes, HMRC have relaxed their conditions for accepting appeals against late filing penalties for self-assessment tax returns. This change in practice was first highlighted by The Daily Telegraph, who obtained a leaked memo from HMRC. The HMRC position was finally confirmed on 5 June after a huge amount of press coverage on the issue. HMRC do not have sufficient resources to check in detail every reasonable excuse offered for a late tax return, so from now on it will accept those excuses on face value if certain conditions are met.

Three students from Stanground Academy qualified for the English Schools’ Athletics Association (ESAA) track and field championships that took place at the Gateshead International Stadium on 10-11 July.

Taxman zones in on online traders: Thousands of online sellers will need to get their tax affairs in order as HMRC wield expanded powers to get user information from online marketplaces such as Amazon, Gumtree, eBay and Etsy. The clampdown is a continuance of the e-marketplace campaign which initially ran between March and September in 2012. According to HMRC’s press office, the initial correspondence sent to traders to inform them of the campaign was educational. The new crackdown was launched on the back of extensive new powers introduced last year enabling HMRC to download people’s account information. It has been reported that the websites in question are being forced to hand over customer account details, including their selling activity, as part of the taxman’s legal powers. HMRC have avoided stating exactly what the threshold is where an online seller becomes an online trader. Instead, they use the badges of trade as their guiding principle. Some of the 14,000 targeted thus far had made as little as £100 profit online. Anyone just selling the occasional item has nothing to worry about. This is about making sure online traders pay the right tax, ‘wealthy or otherwise’. The campaign has had some notable successes, with one eBay seller who turned over an undeclared £1.4m in six years handed a two year prison sentence. For discussion another day, if you are trading, this income is taxable, but if you are just pursuing a hobby with no intention of a making a ‘profit’, this may not be taxable!

T

he ESAA National Championships are the fourth largest athletics event in the world. Organised entirely by volunteer teachers, they bring together the best athletes in each English county. The girls have progressed through a demanding selection process at Peterborough schools, county schools and Anglian Championships over recent weeks. The three girls who qualified are: Ella Delucis – currently ranked 8th in the country in the 100m hurdles Priscilla Dadzie – shotput, qualifying within her first year of training for the event Holly Brown – currently ranked 14th in the country in pole vault Principal Ged Rae said “This is a remarkable achievement and reflects the hard work, resilience and determination of Stanground Academy students. We are all exceedingly proud of Holly, Priscilla and Ella.” At the event all three girls progressed to their respective finals, with Ella leading the honours with a fantastic run in the Senior Girls 100m Hurdles final to take the bronze medal with a time of 14.42. Priscilla took 13th place in the Intermediate Girls Shotput final with a massive throw of 11.74m. Holly placed joint ninth in the Intermediate Girls Pole Vault final, with a jump of 3.15m. Pumas celebrate end of season in style

T

This year’s end of season presentation saw Pumas at the Radius club above the Solstice in Peterborough town centre. What a superb venue.

here were also some very special guests present as POSH mascot Peter Burrow and POSH centre back Jack Baldwin took on the presentation duties for the proud Pumas. Over 300 Pumas’ players, coaches, family and supporters took the time to reflect on a fabulous season for Park Farm Pumas. On display were the spoils of a great year – a win for the U10 Red team in the Yaxley Tournament in summer 2014, followed by an U12 Red win in the Hereward Cup, narrow defeats in semi-finals in both the U11 & U10 Hereward cups, a fair play award for the U10s and a win in this summer’s Sawtry 6s tournament for the U10s.

But the biggest reward for the dedicated volunteers of the Pumas’ backroom and coaching staff were the smiling faces of all the young cubs at the sight of their trophies. Peter Burrow and Jack Baldwin from POSH were absolute stars on the day, and a superb example to the young players of how a professional footballer should act. Chairman Ciaran McAuley told the Gazette: “I would like to take this opportunity to thanks all of the Pumas’ players, coaches, backroom staff and parents for making it another fabulous year of football for this young club. We are already looking forward to another fabulous season in 2015/16.”

If you would like to become a member of the Puma family as either a player, coach or backroom (staff admin or match day support), then please contact the club via www.pitchero.com/clubs/parkfarmpumas/ or give chairman Ciaran McAuley a call on 07713 106 898 – they are especially interested to hear from players in year 6 going into year 7 in September. ‘Must read’ children’s books

A funny Rocket Constructor toddlers’ app game for iPad and iPhone

Published 27 August

THE SHEPHERDS CROWN

Sir Terry Pratchett’s final Discworld novel, which features the witch Tiffany Aching.

BING – LITTLE LIBRARY With four bright and fun mini board books, this pocket library will delight all of Bing’s young fans! Find out all about Bing, his friends and his world in this set of mini books. From Bing’s best friends (including Flop), the things Bing loves (including everything orange) to the games he loves to play and the things he likes to say.

Once upon a time there was a Rocket Constructor. Love is a funny thing – well, at least you could say so in the little love story of the app’s intro: where one evening, a ruffled professor who is watching the stars through his telescope, discovers the love of his life on a distant planet – the kids’ task will be to help the professor construct a rocket, in order for him to visit his true love. Catch the Wally hide and seek iPad and iPhone game for kids (12)

THE REST OF US JUST LIVE HERE Award-winning writer Patrick Ness's bold and irreverent novel powerfully asks what if you weren’t the Chosen One? The one who’s supposed to fight the zombies, or the soul-eating ghosts, or whatever this new thing is, with the blue lights and the death? What if you were like Mikey? Who just wants to graduate and go to prom and maybe finally work up the courage to ask Henna out before someone goes and blows up the high school. Again. Because sometimes there are problems bigger than this week’s end of the world and sometimes you just have to find the extraordinary in your ordinary life. Even if your best friend might just be the God of mountain lions . . .

After releasing the wonderful picture book app Funny Yummy the kids’ app developers Funny Yummy Studio, have now published their first kids’ game for iPad and iPhone called Catch the Wally. SPORT

Little Kickers is a great introduction to sport. In every class, children learn skills that promote social, emotional, cognitive and physical development, through the teaching of football skills.

Little Kickers Classes will help with short attention spans, balance and coordination, confidence, improved stamina and speed, and a strong sense of identity, as well as many more skills.

C

lasses run throughout the year, so there are no start or end dates to worry about. Little Kicks for aged 18 months to two years, offer a gentle introduction without pressure. Kids will be introduced to different types of movement, from running to jumping. Junior Kickers, for ages two to three and a half years, will start to develop a range of kicking and slow directional dribbling skills.

Mighty Kickers, for ages three and a half to five years will encourage good peer interaction and participation, develop a strong sense of identity within a group, and the basic concepts of playing with a team. Mega Kickers for ages five to seven years will encourage dribbling evasively with good close control, perform a variety of different kicks, and learn the basic rules of a match. LEGAL LEGAL

Spice up your ba Keeping your divorce stress free and simple If you have decided your marriage is over you will most probably want to make the whole process of divorce as painless as possible. So what is the secret?

v Firstly, don’t only take advice from your friends and family, seek

professional advice from a family lawyer committed to resolving disputes in a non-confrontational way. Listen to the professional advice given to you and try to act upon it.

v Always negotiate before you litigate. Compromise is the essence of any agreement.

v Inevitably there will be disagreements with your spouse but try to keep emotions under control and avoid verbal abuse and threats. This will simply lead to them becoming difficult and inflexible. You do not want a war.

v Try to avoid involving the children or using them as a pawn. They are innocent in this situation and they will need the love and support of both parents.

Chargrilled food needs really good, punchy seasoning, so the following recipes incorporate plenty of herbs and spices. The first is our family favourite – a versatile barbecue marinade that can be used for pretty much anything and everything.

v You may have been thinking about a divorce for years whereas your

partner may only have received the news a matter of weeks ago. You might have to slow down for a while, be patient, and wait until they are ready to discuss matters.

v Consider all the options available to resolve matters, such as solicitor negotiation, mediation, collaborative law and only consider court proceedings as a last resort. A Resolution committed lawyer will explore the best option with you, suited to your individual case.

Whilst getting a divorce is clearly not an ideal situation it does not have to be time consuming, stressful or extremely costly. Sensible advice coupled with sensible people can help to ensure the experience is as painless and cost effective as possible. But more importantly that you and your children can move forward with your lives in the best possible way. For any Family Law queries please contact Abby Smith for a FREE initial telephone consultation. Abby Smith – 01480 270499 or 07948 533610 abby.smith@family-lawfirm.co.uk

arbecue this summer

O

ur misguided belief that we’ll be blessed with wall-to-wall sunshine is encouraged by garden centres throughout the land. Even before the daffodils are out, they’re tempting us with lavish displays of patio furniture complemented by a vast array of barbecues, from tin-foil disposables to state-of-the-art jobs that look as though they require a pilot’s licence. Nonetheless, it has to be said that at the merest hint of some decent weather, the majority of us love nothing more than ‘slinging a shrimp on the barbie’. But if it does rain on your parade, you can always opt for a superhot grill or griddle pan. One of the secrets to tasty, succulent barbecue fare is a good marinade. Mix the ingredients together in a screw-topped jar and shake well. Place the meat or fish in a bowl, pour over the marinade and ensure everything is thoroughly coated. Cover with cling film and marinate for at least an hour in the fridge (or better still overnight) to allow the flavours to permeate.

When it comes to unshakable optimism concerning our summer weather, we Brits are undisputed champions of the world!

Versatile Barbecue Marinade

Piri Piri

3 tbsp of sunflower oil 3 tbsp white wine vinegar 2 tbsp soy sauce or gluten-free Tamari 1 tbsp Chinese five-spice powder 2 tbsp tomato ketchup 1 tbsp honey 3-5 garlic cloves, crushed 1 tbsp ginger paste

5-10 Bird’s Eye or other red chillies, chopped 100ml olive oil 50ml red wine vinegar 3-5 garlic cloves, crushed 1 tbsp tomato puree 1 tbsp smoked paprika 1 tbsp dried thyme or oregano (or 3 tbsp fresh) Plenty of freshly milled salt & pepper

With Chinese five-spice powder and soy sauce in the mix, spare ribs are the obvious candidates, but mushrooms also taste amazing prepared this way. Toss whole mushrooms and chunks of red and yellow pepper in the marinade, then skewer; for vegetarian guests, use Quorn fillets or Haloumi cheese too. If there are any leftovers (doubtful) they taste great eaten cold the next day. Next up is that Portuguese classic, Piri Piri sauce. Piri Piri is another name for the fiery African bird’s-eye chilli which gives the dish its name; you can adjust the amount of chillies according to taste (or use a milder variety), but the spicy heat really brings out the best in char-grilled chicken thighs . . . think Nando’s!

Gently fry the chopped chillies and garlic in a little of the oil. Add the paprika and stir for 30 seconds. Add the rest of the ingredients and simmer for five minutes. Allow to cool, then use as described. The third marinade is ideal for more delicately flavoured food, such as fish, Quorn and tofu, but also chicken or lamb kebabs. Simply mix two parts of olive oil to one part of lemon juice and add salt, black pepper, plenty of crushed garlic and loads of chopped fresh herbs. Tarragon tastes great with fish and chicken, and thyme also adds fragrance without being overpowering. For lamb kebabs, rosemary with bay leaves and a few crushed juniper berries make the perfect choice.

Try our own beef and lamb, local pork, homemade sausages and other lovely produce.

PETS’ CORNER

Holiday homes for dogs a hit with owners Your Pet’s Paradise, a home boarding business, is branching out in our area. This time last year, owner Anna Bowen had just taken on her first holiday homes for dogs and booked in her first four-legged customer. One year on and her business is going from strength to strength.

A

nna has dog lovers in and around the area who open their homes to dogs while their owners are away. The dogs are treated like one of the family; they love the attention of having someone with them most of the day and enjoy lovely long walks. The phrase ‘they didn’t want to come home’ has cropped up regularly in feedback e-mails. At Your Pet’s Paradise they carefully match the dogs to the right holiday home, ensuring that they have the best time possible and their owners have peace of mind. Dogs can have holidays of their own and not even need a passport! If you would prefer your dog to have a home from home experience while you are away then Your Pet’s Paradise could be just what you’re looking for. Anna is also looking for extra holiday homes, so if you’re a dog owner with time and love to give get in touch!

PETS’ CORNER

Caring for your pet in

hot weather The summer sun is something that we all look forward to enjoying, however for pets the hot weather can be very unpleasant. So here are a few tips to help you keep your pets are as comfortable as possible on hot days. • • • • •

Move garden hutches and runs to shaded areas, or put a lightweight covering over to provide shade. Ensure indoor cages, crates and hutches are out of direct sunlight. Make water available from multiple sources (both indoors and outside). Check water sources throughout the day and top up as appropriate. Apply sun block to areas where hair is thin such as tops of ears and noses (it is best to use products designed for children or sensitive skin, and you should always test the cream on a small area first and leave it for 24 hours to ensure your animal is not going to react to it).

• •

Leave windows open, fans going and air conditioning on inside, especially if you are leaving pets alone for any period of time. Closing curtains can help pets to avoid direct sunlight indoors and keep temperatures down. Clean out litter trays and bedding more frequently. Ensure pets are protected against parasites to prevent infestation from fleas, ticks, mites and other nasties. Rabbits are included in this with fly strike being much more prevalent in hot weather. Provide areas of shade in gardens out of direct sunlight.

/stangroundgazette www.stangroundgazette.co.uk

Try to avoid exercising dogs during the midday sun. Instead take them to wooded/shaded areas or take them out in the early morning or late evening when the sun is weaker. Take water with you when exercising dogs away from home and limit vigorous exercise such as ball games. If you give your dog a toy that you stuff with food, prepare it the night before with something moist and put in the freezer for a longer lasting, cooling treat.

We hope these tips help you and your pet to enjoy the summer sun, and if you have any further questions or concerns please do not hesitate to contact us.

Allotments Hard work or relaxing?

A

llotment – what does this word mean to you? Freedom, boredom, hard work, traditional? Who do you feel an allotment provides for, both in satisfaction terms, as a hobby, and the actual produce grown? Who does an allotment cater for? The old, the young, the retired, the busy dad or mum? Or just anyone with an interest in growing and a few hours to spare each week? The joy is that

anyone with a bit of time and vision can successfully run an allotment. Vegetables don’t magically appear, although we might think they do when we see them packaged up and on display in our local supermarkets. One well known (at least to Radio Two listeners) allotmenteer commented that some people think you can manage one in just half an hour a week. I’m not so sure

Commitment, stamina and time are great assets to have when considering taking on an allotment. HOME & GARDEN own mistakes often leads to a better understanding of how things work. You do need to know what’s allowed (a tidy plot and well tendered crops) and what’s not (sometimes bonfires, barbed wire and sub letting) and tips on how to get the best bean crop or what to do about slugs can prove invaluable. However, one of the great joys of an allotment is the chance to lose yourself in your own little world. An allotment can be a wonderful place to rediscover a sense of fulfilment, especially if modern day life presents you with many stresses. Mundane jobs such as watering make you slow down and are an excellent time for contemplation. Planning what you want to grow in the cold days of winter helps to remind us that better weather is just around the corner and that whatever happens the seasons continue to change and take us forward in a comforting and controlled way. Late spring and early summer are very busy times on the allotment. There are crops to be sown and nurtured, weeds to be removed, and bugs and other crop threatening creatures to be eradicated. Predominately though, it should be the time you reap the rewards of all your earlier hard work and planning. If you are new to allotments, try simple crops first, but

do remember to sew ones you will harvest and enjoy. Lettuce and other salad crops, runner beans, peas and new potatoes are good choices. Many of us have found, no matter how hard you try, if you have children, they may not appreciate your efforts to grow spinach, kale, chillies and other delights perhaps more suited to the adult palate. Involve the kids in the growing though and they may be open to trying new things – it certainly worked for me with my very sweet small tomatoes. A little early research on what works on surrounding allotments, and how easy certain crops are to grow and maintain, can pay dividends on your own plot. No-one could really argue that an allotment doesn’t involve some hard work, but the benefits usually far outweigh this. However, I have to issue a final word of warning. One of the things I initially found slightly tiresome was the amount of washing the crops needed when you had picked them. Like many people I was used to buying pre-packed from the supermarket; vegetables that had been carefully sorted in the first place so no earwigs, slugs and other creatures were likely to drop out. However, the overwhelming difference in flavour soon made up for any little inconveniences and the sense of achievement was superb.

Cosmic Katie ‘s Stars August 2015

By Katie Lancashire, Clairvoyant and Astrologer

Leo July 24-August 23

There are riches to be had right now. First and foremost in your close relationships and secondly, finances will be improving greatly. Legal documents will need your full attention, be mindful of what you are agreeing to.

Virgo August 24-September 23 You will be meeting and mixing with some very influential people, and will have the ability and opportunity to move your career into a different direction. Avoid travel unless absolutely essential as it could cause lots of unnecessary friction between loved ones.

Libra September 24-October 23 One step forward and two back is becoming something of an occupational hazard, but you are getting there and once you do, you’ll understand why it took you so long. This could be your luckiest time for money this year, so pay attention and look after it wisely.

Scorpio October 24-November 22

You are finally emerging into the world again after what has been somewhat of a dark phase. Your image will be the first thing you address, followed quickly by who you want in, and out, of your social circle; there’s no room for hangers on!

Sagittarius November 23-December 21 Are you ready to commit? Or are you about to throw in the towel? Both options are on the table now, which makes this a testing period of u-turns, crossroads and big decisions; above everything, be true to yourself and listen to your intuition.

Capricorn December 22-January 20 Work and money are your main focus, with many new ideas circulating in your mind. You do, however, need to bite the bullet and make some changes – no more excuses. A break away will give you chance to recharge you batteries and rest, enjoy it. Aquarius January 21-February 19 It’s all going on in the relationship zone! There will be an unexpected reunion from your past and also some attention from new admirers, don’t rush into anything, you need to see what people’s intentions are first before you show your hand.

Pisces February 20-March 20 Endings and beginnings are key right now, with work, friendships and relationships all being analysed closely. A business venture looks promising, just make sure you do all your research beforehand.

Aries March 21-April 20 Now is a good time to start new projects and set the ball rolling; whether you decide to take the initiative or follow someones else’s lead, events around you will necessitate change. Allow extra time if you have to travel or get to meetings as delays are inevitable.

Taurus April 21-May21 Mars enters into Leo, highlighting the start of a long journey of fun and creativity, so explore your talents to the full. Your popularity is also set to soar, but beware of jealousy from those around you who aren’t in such a dynamic position.

Gemini May 22-June 22 Big changes on the home front may prove challenging, either with a house move or getting the builders in, but stay strong and persevere as your patience will be richly rewarded. A surprise romantic encounter will make you smile. Cancer June 23-July 23 Relationships will be under the magnifying glass as you question what it is you need from your love life and partner and whether who you are with is ticking all the boxes, just make sure you’re not being unrealistic.

If it is your birthday this month . . . There is no let up in the hectic pace at the moment, yet all you are craving is to feel settled and rested. Watch out for overspending on non-essentials, cut back and save your pennies where you can.

CONSUMER ADVICE

Don’t get stung by holiday scams New figures have revealed that British holidaymakers lost £2.2m in 2014 through a series of internet-based scams and deceptions. Follow our guide to staying safe.

T

he National Fraud Intelligence Bureau revealed more than 1,500 cases of holiday booking fraud were reported in 2014. The most common types of fraud related to fake air tickets, bogus online adverts, hacked accounts and dodgy websites, with those aged 3049 most commonly targeted. If you’re looking for a holiday deal, there are easy steps you can take to help safeguard yourself and your holiday.

1. Research your company and accommodation Do conduct thorough online searches to ensure the company’s credibility. Online forums ask for other customers’ experiences. Visit long standing review sites such as Trip Advisor and look at overall customer feedback. 2. Is the company ATOL and/or ABTA registered? By law, every UK travel company that sells air holidays and flights is required to hold an ATOL, which stands for Air Travel Organiser’s Licence. ATOL offers consumers financial protection in the event of a travel company failure or if something goes wrong and you’re stranded abroad. ABTA, the UK’s largest travel body, provides a code of conduct for their members to abide by. Customers travelling with ABTA-registered companies can be reassured they have a greater level of protection should things go wrong.

by Eileen Le Voi

3. Pay with a credit or debit card The majority of people defrauded in 2014 paid with a bank transfer or cash – with no means of redress available. Only a small proportion of those scammed paid by credit or debit card, where assistance can be sought. 4. Watch out for copycat websites Copycat websites can be incredibly similar to legitimate sites and use advertisements to appear high on Google searches. Customers are asked to fill in forms, charging an ‘administration’ fee, even though there’s no administration needed and you can usually go through the process yourself for free. 5. EHIC Cards and Country Visas Travellers looking for a European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) are a popular target for copycat sites. EHIC cards are free from the NHS. Find a wealth of travel related information at www.gov.uk/browse/abroad/travel-abroad
