Her Royal Highness The Princess Royal was welcomed onto the Park by Nene Park Trust Chairman Jon Marsden and Chief Executive James McCulloch who led the tour of the facilities and activities based in Lakeside @ Ferry Meadows. The Royal visit comes as a result of a £2.5 million investment from Nene Park Trust and a year of extensive works to the old watersports centre building and surrounding landscape. Lakeside provides a hub for activity and relaxation within Ferry Meadows as the home for Nene Outdoors, a new watersports and outdoor activity venture, Rutland Cycling for cycle hire and Lakeside Kitchen & Bar, a contemporary dining and function venue at the Park. As well as introducing new faces and facilities the complex is also home to long-standing Park friends; Peterborough Sailability, Peterborough Adapted Cycling Scheme operated by Vivacity, Lakeside Sailing Club, Nene Bowmen and, more recent addition, Packers Canoe Club. These groups are working closely with the new businesses and the Trust to provide a variety of leisure opportunities for all abilities and backgrounds.
Whilst at the centre, Her Royal Highness met with staff and service users of the Vivacity Adapted Cycling scheme before watching a Peterborough Sailability session and officially naming their new Lugger boat “Blue Bird” in her capacity as Patron of RYA (Royal Yachting Association) Foundation. Brian Rowley, Chairman of Peterborough Sailability, said “I am very proud that Her Royal Highness The Princess Royal has visited us today, to recognise what we have achieved so far, and to encourage us to provide sailing for many more people with a disability in the future. Peterborough Sailability has given back to me the opportunity - taken away by my decreasing mobility - to sail, race and again have excellent exercise” Her Royal Highness went on to meet a range of Nene Park Trust Board members, staff, volunteers, tenants and friends of the centre and Park before the visit culminated in a formal opening of Lakeside with the unveiling of a commemorative stone and plaque at its entrance in front of a large group of excited guests, children from the nearby St Botolphs Church of England Primary School and the general public.

Shoppers can use free BT Wi-fi anywhere within the Centre by selecting it from their network connection options and simply registering once to access the service by opening their browser and filling in their details. Stanground CofE Church Go slow for summer! Get outside. Switch off the screens (phone, tablet, TV, all of them) and sit in the warmth of the evening watching the sky as the light fades and one by one the stars come out. Meet with family and friends and take time to each together slowly savouring the food and the friendship. August is the time for holidays and even if you are not able to get away, Stanground is a great place for slowing down. Holiday came from ‘holy day’ and holy days were days that were different from the rush of working life (holy just means set apart, saved for special), and they were part of the spiritual life of our communal spiritual life in the past. Our culture seems to expect us to be instant and always connected and we have lost some of the beautiful rhythms of seasons and festivals that help give us a sense of the holy. So I plan to practice what I preach, because despite the common perception, vicars don’t just work one day a week! And I will be living differently in August. Church will continue on Sundays, but most of our extra activities will stop too, though if you would like to spend some of your slow time sitting in our beautiful garden at Mace Road, you would be very welcome!
Greetings from Cardea! Hope everyone’s enjoying the lovely summery weather.
Cardea update
We are all looking forward to the summer holidays and busy planning events for Cardea and the wider community, we are holding two play days for families with younger children at St Michaels School. We’ll also be dancing, playing and having lunch together and hope that lots of you will come and join us. All this is at the cost of just £1 per family!

We are also looking for more stall holders and entertainers so if you fancy getting involved please find us on Face Book My Cardea UK. As always everyone is welcome! Thank you. All we need to do now is pray for the sunshine to continue! By Kate Ferris Cardea Residents Association

The Environmental Capital Action Plan was adopted in 2014, it provides a vision and aims for how the Environment Capital will be delivered. The plan is broken down into 10 areas, each containing a vision to 2050 and interim targets to 2016 of which sustainable travel is one of these. Peterborough has the potential to be a truly sustainable city which has a thriving local economy, strong communities and a sustainable way of life where the residents are healthy, happy and prosperous and where the environment is clean, enjoyable and safe for all use. Travelchoice recognises the importance of sustainable development maximising the environmental, social and economic benefits of different transport modes. It’s not just a case of going from one place to another, it’s about discovering that Peterborough has more to offer than what you can see from the road and ultimately creating a sustainable city which visitors and residents of Peterborough can continue to enjoy for years to come.
| August 2014 | T: 01733 347618 | E: info@stangroundgazette.co.uk
The weeks then become divided into specific transportation weeks to highlight the benefits of each method.
Party in the Park 2nd August Travelchoice aims are simple and are to encourage sustainable travel wherever possible and to reduce the need to travel by car by achieving the following: • Improve the quality of life and transport opportunities in the City • Reduce the cities’ impact on climate change • Enhance safety and security for all the citizens of Peterborough • Support the economic growth within the city Travelchoice is by no means ‘anti-car’, we just want to let people know there is an alternative to the car which can be cheaper, quicker and healthier for all involved. We advocate people walking, cycling and using transport but
This year it will be bigger and better than last year’s event, including:
• Family fun fair • Hover Cars • Pedal powered music stage with live music acts all day • Inflatable Maze • PlayBus • Rollapaluza • Test track for assorted bikes • BBQ • Smoothie Bike

School News
A group of students from the Stanground Academy have taken to the water The students from Years’ Seven, Eight and Nine were all total novices at the start of the lessons; some had never even been in a boat before. Now five weeks into their lessons they are all confidently taking boats out onto Grafham Water and more than capable of navigating their way around the large reservoir. Danielle, a Year Seven student, says “I had never been in a boat before but I enjoyed going with my friends and learning new skills”. Starting off in small Fun Boats the students were taught the basic skills of setting the sails and how to steer the boats. Danielle explains the rhyme they were taught to make sure the sails are correctly set “A flappy sail is unhappy, a tight sail is right”. Having mastered the basics the students have moved onto more complicated skills and are now capable of setting up their boats, launching them and packing them away after the lessons without help from the instructors. They have also learnt what to do when their boat capsizes; some of the students have had a practical
experience of this! But even getting wet has failed to dampen their enthusiasm. Danielle tells of an especially exciting incident “We crashed into another boat and our boat tipped over, we both fell in but with the help of the other two students we got our boat back the right way up, climbed in and sailed it back to the shore!” Whilst this might sound dangerous the students are closely supervised by instructors in a safety boat and wear life preservers whilst on the water. Over the next few lessons the students will move out of the Fun Boats and into Toppers. These are proper sailing dinghies and are a level up from the simple and “unsinkable” Fun Boats. This is a challenge that they are looking forward to. Sailing lessons are one of a range of extra-curricular activities available to students at the Stanground Academy as Danielle says “it’s fun to learn new stuff and be out of the classroom, it’s good to be outside with my friends”.

Learning to sail
St John’s CoE Primary School Stanground St John’s unveiled our new logo at our special church service celebrating becoming a member of The Diocese of Ely Multi Academy Trust on Friday 27th June 2014 coinciding with The Feast of St John week at St John’s Church, Stanground. Our logo was designed and created by Simon Bell of Sensation Creative based in Stanground and has been incorporated onto our headed stationery, uniform, external signage, name badges and staff work wear.
Blackberry House Day Nursery recently created an entry for Peterborough Children’s Film Awards. The children worked hard to learn the song ‘Ally-Oh;’ as well as learning many actions. They had many roles to play from characters to directors! The filming took place on the wonderful play pirate ship! Blackberries attended the awards evening and were delighted to be nominated under the Early Years Nursery Rhyme category. The children thought it was great fun to walk down the red carpet and go on stage to collect their award! Blackberries are now planning a glamorous premier evening, for families to come and watch the film. Well done Blackberries Pre-School! Come and visit us today, to join in the fun! Tel: 01733 566700
The process started by Simon asking our children to draw a picture of what the School meant to them. Simon quickly ascertained that the children felt very happy at School as well as having very close links with the Church. Have you noticed that the new logo follows the shape of St John’s Church? Even the position of the ‘St’ above the letter ‘O’ representing an halo. ‘St’ situated between the ‘J’ and ‘h’ creates a steeple and the letter ‘t’ creates a subtle cross shape. The cross on the flag symbolises the Church as well as St George’s Cross – in line with the strapline of Stanground Community and St John’s Church ‘Your People, Your Community, Your Church’. The waving flag symbolises pride – proud of strong links with Church, Christianity, Country, Community and being part of The Diocese of Ely Multi Academy Trust. The Constantia typeface used in our address etc on our headed stationery means perseverance, harmony, steadfastness, persistence, firmness, courage, loyalty, steadiness, regularity, consistency, constancy, resistant to change and red being a primary colour with white projecting clarity and strength. St John’s is prominent and central with the shape of the logo being sensitive to the age of children - easy to read. It can be clearly read yet creates a more than skin deep quality reflecting the close relationship and values the school shares with the Church. The new logo has been very positively received by children, parents, staff and governors and we look forward to September when the new Reception Class intake arrive in their new uniforms.

Whether it is for a romantic meal with a partner, or just a catch up with family and friends, Mattoni is the perfect place to be. On arrival, my partner and I were welcomed by Gorreti with a small cocktail to start the evening!
Grab a coffee, put your feet up and take some time out of your busy day with the following fun puzzles...

When the starter arrived it was very well presented and tasted beautiful with my partner quoting that it was the best starter he has ever had! I chose the Bruschetta and my partner opted for Asparagi alla Parmigiana which is Asparagus wrapped in Parma ham and stone baked with grand parmigiana sprinkled on top to start. Delicious! When the main arrived it was also beautifully presented and tasted even better and the dish didn’t seem to have an end. I chose a classic Cannelloni dish whilst my partner had Spaghetti Polpette.

The Whittle

The Whittle re-opened back in November after an extensive refurbishment costing over £200K. It now boasts a very contemporary feel, with light & bright areas with comfy chairs to sit or dine in, a tasty varied menu and Sunday lunch too. About half of the spacious pub has a sporty feel – where you can brush up on your pool and darts skills over a pint or two. It has large screens for watching live football games and all the major sports, with the massive 10ft projector screen coming out for the major games.
Question: I rent out an unfurnished property and I have been told I cannot claim tax relief on the cost for the replacement of a faulty fridge? Answer: Following the withdrawal of a tax concession from April 2013, you are unable to claim tax relief for the replacement of defective, free-standing white goods in unfurnished properties. However, if the fridge is incorporated into a fitted kitchen, any replacement of defective white goods will be allowed as a repair. This applies if the white goods are only part of the overall fitted kitchen, whereas a free standing fridge is an item in its own right. Replacement of white goods in furnished properties continues to be covered by the annual 10% “wear and tear allowance”.

Many employers pay their employees a monthly car allowance to compensate them for the business use of their private vehicles. In most cases this car allowance is treated as remuneration and is subject to PAYE and National Insurance deductions. Additionally, employers may also pay a nominal amount per mile as a contribution to fuel costs. Employers are entitled to pay their employees a tax free mileage allowance for the business use of their private vehicles. The rates are: 45p per mile for the first 10,000 miles in any tax year, and 25p per mile for any additional use. In a recently decided case, an employer that paid less than the above rates, was allowed to deduct the difference between the actual rate paid and tax free rates, from the monthly car allowance, before working out any employer’s or employee’s N.I..C.’s due on the monthly car allowance. If the amount being paid for business use of fuel is nominal, this can make quite a difference to National Insurance Contributions that are due.

Employers reading this article, in certain circumstances, may be able to claim refunds for overpayment of past NIC deducted from car allowance payments. However, it should be noted that in the decided case mentioned above, the allowance was only paid to employees travelling more than 2,500 business miles each year though the mileage rate they received was correspondingly reduced to 12p per mile from 40p. It was thus aimed at compensating those incurring additional costs for using their cars substantially for business purposes.
Dates to remember 1 August 2014 - Due date for Corporation tax for companies with an accounting period ended 31 October 2013. 19 August 2014 - PAYE and NIC deductions due for month ended 5 August 2014. (If you pay your tax electronically the due date is 22 August 2014.) 19 August 2014 - Filing deadline for the CIS300 monthly return for the month ended 5 August 2014. 19 August 2014 – Due date for CIS tax deducted for the month ended 5 August 2014.

Many of us will be looking forward to going on holiday this summer, but for pets this can be a stressful time. Thankfully there are lots of things you can do to help keep them happy while you are on holiday in the UK or abroad Qualified and experienced dog groomer Collection & delivery service

General tips Regardless of where you are going on holiday, if you are taking your pet/s with you or if someone else will be taking care of them for you while you are away, there are a few things that can help in all circumstances: • Ensure the contact information on your pets’ microchip is up to date

• Favourite toys, beds and blankets should smell of home to accompany your pet, rather than those that have been freshly laundered • Provide the food they are used to having at home, this will help prevent fussy eating either while away from home or on your return • If you know your pet is of a nervous disposition it may be worth buying a pheromone diffuser, these look like a fragrance plug-in and slowly release pheromones into the air that should help to make your pet feel safer in their environment. Royal Canin also produce a range of food that works in a similar way, so speak to a member of the team at your local practice and they will be happy to discuss if either of these approaches may benefit for pet.

Keeping your pet happy during the summer holiday season
Whilst many dogs love travelling by car, unfortunately about a third of all dogs get travel sick, which is no fun for anyone. If you know your dog is one of the unlucky ones: • Give food in plenty of time before travelling • Open a window to allow air in • Take regular breaks on long journeys and make fresh water available • If possible encourage your dog to look out of the front or rear window, this will allow them to fix on a distant object (such as the horizon) and should reduce feelings of nausea • Speak to your vet about medication, there is now a non drowsy tablet that can be prescribed that your dog may benefit from taking • Consider use of a pheromone diffuser in the car You should also consider whether your dog will travel in the car boot, in a crate or on a car seat, and whether a harness is required to keep them safe while on the road.
Whilst many elling dogs love trav ately by car, unfortun l of al about a third sick. el av tr t dogs ge rescribe Your vet can p non-drowsy medication.
Plan ahead and ensure you have enough food, treats and poo bags for your dog. If you’re camping ensure you know if you will have access to drinking water or whether you will need to provide this as well.
Preparing for kennels & catteries If your pet is going into kennels or a cattery while you are on holiday you will need to check what is required by that establishment, however most will expect your pet/s to be fully vaccinated (including against Kennel Cough for dogs and Leukaemia for Cats), as well as that they are up to date flea and worming treatments.
If your dog is lucky enough to be exploring the great outdoors with you on holiday it is advisable to check with your vet that they are protected from a wide range of parasites and not just fleas. Just as with humans, dogs will also be a tasty treat or great new home for many unwanted bugs that they may not normally come into contact with, but can easily be prevented with a spot on treatment from your local practice. We hope you’ve found this information useful, however if you have any questions or queries please feel free to pop in or call your local practice for more advice, and whatever you are doing this summer we hope you and your pet’s have a great time!
If you know you will not be contactable while your away, ensure you give details to both the kennels and your Vets, for who has authority to authorise treatment in your absence.

Couples who live together do not acquire the same rights and legal responsibilities towards each other as those couples that are married. Difficulties can arise if cohabiting couples later separate as there is no automatic right to be supported or housed by the other – even if this was the case during the relationship. There is no law to rely on to obtain financial support from an ex-partner (except for the children).
Thereafter meetings can be arranged at a time and venue convenient to you.

Food & Drink
We can all remember the picnics in our childhood: some in glorious sunshine where the day seemed to go on forever and others that were rained off, ending with the family eating in a steamed up car. Both are fun in different ways - so why not take every opportunity this year to get your hamper out and head for your favourite picnic spot? If you’re planning on having regular picnics this summer then you may find it useful to include all your picnic things in one big hamper, box or bag and keep it in the shed or under the stairs so you can make a quick get-away on the day of the picnic and then you’re not dashing around the house trying to find things
• Picnic rug (or a plastic sheet plus a tablecloth). • High factor sunscreen. • Sting relief cream, antiseptic wipes and plasters. Mosquito repellent spray if you’re picnicking around water. • Hats for everyone. Long sleeved t-shirts are also a good idea if you’ve got a long day in the sun planned. • Several spare carrier bags - good for putting all the rubbish in if you’re not near bins, and for putting wet/dirty clothes and shoes in depending on what you’re up to. • Bring plenty to drink. Take three times as much drink as you think you will need as you never have enough. • A towel and a change of clothes (especially if you’ll be around water, you know they won’t be able to resist). • A camera - to immortalise the day. • Cutlery - even if you’re planning on having finger food, you may still need a spare knife and tea spoons for yogurts. • Plates and cups - children’s plastic plates and cups are useful or perhaps you can use container lids or paper plates. • Thermos of tea or coffee - you might need something to keep you warm later in the day!

Also the hard skin build up through the winter months can contribute to corns occurring and if these are not removed they can be very painful. Hard skin, cracked heels and corns also be a problem through the summer months too due to the footwear we wear so it is important to maintain the feet to keep them comfortable. Fungal nail can also be a headache for many of us both men and women. They look unsightly, thick and discoloured but do not despair all is not lost, they can be treated. Ladies do like to put nail polish on in the summer but if fungal nail is present it is important to allow the nails to breath so either use it as little as possible or not at all. A non asetone nail varnish remover will also help as it is not so harsh on the nails. Another irritation that many people suffer from is verrucas and these can be a real pain!! A verruca is a virus and can be very difficult to get rid of, they can linger for a long time. We very often get them when we are run down and just because one person has them in the house doesn’t mean everyone will catch them. There are many treatments for them but it is important to catch them early and start treatment. The way you can try and tell if it is a verruca is if you apply lateral pressure to it, it will often hurt but it is worth getting them checked out to make sure. All of the above conditions can be treated by Wright Feet in a wide selection of ways with many different techniques and methods and treatments.

Only instead of the presents brought to us by Santa, wasps bring only unbridled fury and painful stings if you look or breathe at them in the wrong way. Imagine, you’re sat in an idyllic pub beer garden, your friends around you , sun shining and flowers blooming. But, you hear that dreaded buzz, then the sight of your friends pointing and laughing in your direction, you look down and there you see it, a now drunken wasp struggling in your drink. This is just another peril that the wasp brings to us. Kill the wasps I say, but we must however save our friend the bee. Quite possibly best bit of summer is the ability to sit outside for longer than ten minutes without freezing. Once the sun has gone down and the wasp menace has given us a reprieve for a few hours, we are able
to sit outside long into the cloudless evenings staring into the infinite majesty of the stars above us, before remembering that mosquitoes exist and dousing ourselves in repellent, wondering what sin humanity has committed for us to be punished with both wasps and mosquitoes. Some of the more ambitious people in life will have the idea to light a fire on these occasions. Though once the kindling and logs have been gathered and after the first box of matches has been used trying to light the thing, we remember we aren’t Ray Mears and resort to pouring a flammable liquid over the wood and standing well back.

For those of you that aren’t affected by the affliction that is hay fever, I envy you, but it’s something I’ve learnt to live with over the years. But at least the beginning of these weeks of pain are signalling that we will now occasionally get a few days of warmth in between all the rain, so I can’t complain too much. Of course there are many signs that tell us summer is here, chief of which is the sighting of your first wasp of the year, I think of seeing the first wasp of the summer as much the same as seeing the coca cola advert for the first time near Christmas.
Then there is my favourite signal that summer is back. The resurgence of motorbikes on our streets, no, not the obnoxiously loud dirt bikes that roar around the streets irritating everyone. Proper motorbikes, out to enjoy the sun and ride with friends around the quiet back roads in the countryside. There’s nothing that pleases me more than taking mine out for a relaxing ride. Though this does all depend on my bike being kind to me and actually working when I want it to. However, I need something fun and unusual to do this summer. So, is anyone up for helping me build a giant water slide down to the river on Tenter Hill? We’ll be needing a lot of tarpaulin and copious amounts of fairy liquid to make it all the way to the water.
Make this summer a moving experience...

Now is the time to speak up and express how you really feel, you may actually be surprised who steps up to the mark and offers their genuine help, and when they do, take it.
Gemini May 22-June 22 At last, something that you once deemed impossible is finally materialising and becoming your reality, just be careful of jealousy and negative people who try to dampen your glory. Pay particular attention to your health this month and address any niggles or concerns. Cancer June 23-July 23

Virgo August 24-September 23
You feel like you are running on empty and there’s no filing station for a hundred mile radius!! So many people expect so much from you right now, but either you’re not being listened to or not speaking loud enough to be heard. Take a stand and start expressing how you genuinely feel.
Libra September 24-October 23 Stop putting things off, now is the time to tackle a certain problem head on, be brave and speak up. Single? don’t give up hope, this month sees an interesting new character who is keen to impress you, you won’t be disappointed! Scorpio October 24-November 22 They say that everything happens for a reason and right now, certain challenges are completely beyond your control, seek professional advice. You are about to meet some very helpful and inspirational people, one of whom will be a kindred spirit.
Sagittarius November 23-December 21 If you are fed up with your current living arrangement or property, you need to be pro-active rather than just the passenger, an ideal opportunity is right under your nose, don’t over complicate the situation. A close friend will need you support, listen and be there for them as much as you can. Capricorn December 22-January 20 It is full steam ahead for you this month and you’ll be inundated with requests, work and invitations, but can you fit them all in? Don’t over stretch yourself, delegate where possible and claw back some breathing space. A family feud or rift will be healed, which in turn will generate a far happier feeling in those around you. Aquarius January 21-February 19 It’s time to get real about a relationship, whether marriage is on the cards or a partner is having difficulty with commitment, don’t be fobbed off with excuses. A new work opportunity should be carefully considered. Pisces February 20-March 20 Put yourself, your health and your needs first this month, rest well and laugh lots, it’s ok to be indulgent! Property discussions will hot topic around the middle of the month, do your sums before you leap into anything.
If it is your birthday this month.... You will be full of zest and get-up-and-go this month, some may even say you are unstoppable! A new source of income will give you chance to do something different with your life and this could indicate a house move, travel plans or clearing debts, just make sure you don not waste it.

Theft of catalytic converters doubles in the last 3 years
Across the UK, thefts of catalytic converters from motor vehicles have more than doubled over the past three years and local reports of this type of crime continue to rise. Motorists can be left with repair bills of thousands of pounds. Thieves are ripping out the devices because they contain precious metals such as platinum and palladium. The global rise in the price of platinum has fuelled this illegal trade. Vans and 4x4s are particularly susceptible
Catalytic converters reduce poisonous gases from the vehicle’s exhaust system and legislation introduced in 1993 required all cars (J reg onwards) to have one. Although it is not illegal if you don’t have one, be aware that you would fail your MOT without. Further legislation that came into force on 1 October 2013 banned cash payments for scrap metal with the aim of making it easier to trace people selling stolen metal, but one of the emerging problems identified is the direct export whereby they are being exported in containers to emerging economies where they are either reused or broken down there.

How can you prevent theft?
Facebook “f ” Logo

Facebook “f ” Logo
•
Catalytic converters can be uniquely marked in acid with a serial number
•
Motorists are advised to keep their cars in garages or park in well-lit areas
•
Most converters are bolted on - but they can be welded, which makes them harder to remove
•
Fleet owners are advised to obstruct access to high vehicles by parking cars with lower ground clearance round them
•
CCTV cameras should also be installed and warning notices posted up nearby
