Just a quick update on launching a new WI for the ladies of Stanground, Fletton, Cardea and surrounding areas. There has been a lot of interest in starting a WI for these areas so there has been a further meeting with many of the ladies who expressed an interest. The meeting was held at the Heron in Stanground where there was plenty of tea, coffee and cake. There is always cake! I was amazed at such a good turnout If anyone would like more information on any further meetings please leave a message on the WIs of Peterborough Facebook page, email through the Huntingdon and Peterborough Federation of Women’s Institutes website or call the office on 01480 453137 More updates to come soon.

COMMUNITY NEWS
POSH in a league of their own when it comes to supporting charity and #UKCharityWeek Leading football league side Peterborough United have this week shown that they have a soft spot when it comes to charity - and cake! Grant McCann’s league one outfit have outlined their support for the national charity campaign, #UKCharityWeek, and this week a number of players and representatives from the club have enjoyed the local launch of Charity Today’s #UKCharityWeek at their home ground, the ABAX Stadium in Peterborough, Cambridgeshire. The campaign, which is aimed at bringing charities and the public closer together at a time of year when people are statistically at their most giving, will be taking place on 5 -11 December 2016, and Peterborough United want you to get behind your favourite causes this #UKCharityWeek! Charities can also register as official partners of the campaign at: www.charitytoday.co.uk/ ukcharityweek Lee Rayment of #UKCharityWeek said, “We want to thank Peterborough United for their hospitality with the launch, and for them to get behind #UKCharityWeek in the manner that they have is extremely kind of the club.”
Amazon roundabout Back in October I spoke with Amazon and Debenhams distribution staff to discuss issues of lorries parking on the roundabout near Amazon (A605).

Switch and you could save this Christmas Feeling the pinch this Christmas? It’s that time of year when our over-indulgence and generosity both make managing our finances seriously challenging. Couple this with high heating costs required to combat the cold weather and the festive period can soon leave your wallets and purses feeling rather light. However, with Peterborough City Council’s low-cost locally-owned energy tariff - Peterborough Energy - you can afford to give that extra gift this Christmas. Launched in 2015 in partnership with OVO Energy, Peterborough Energy has so far saved over 5,500 residents on average £233 per year on their energy bills. As well as significantly reducing your bills, you can
Comment Councillor’s
also receive a £20 Amazon. co.uk Gift Card for every friend you refer to the scheme, meaning you can make financing your gifts easy. In addition, Peterborough Energy offers a 3% interest reward on all accounts that are in credit and award-winning customer service from uSwitch Supplier of the Year 2014 and 2015 OVO Energy. The scheme has already scooped up the Best Renewable Energy/Energy Efficiency Award at the Association for Public Service Excellence (APSE) Awards - and was nominated for the Best Resident Engagement on
Energy Savings at the SHIFT Awards in November. Councillor Gavin Elsey, who leads on the council’s energy strategy, said: "This is fantastic recognition for a scheme that has helped 5,500 Peterborough households switch to a cheaper tariff. It shows that many people are simply paying far too much for their gas and electricity and we are particularly proud of the citywide £1.3 million savings that have so far been made.” Peterborough Energy has two dedicated Energy Advisors to assist you with switching and energy saving advice.

We have issues with lorries parking on the roundabout, as well as taxis, and family members picking up and dropping off workers thereby causing problems for other road users. This has been an ongoing concern and as we get nearer to Christmas, the issues usually increase. I have asked for a meeting with Amazon and Debenhams, and have invited the Technical Director, Alex Kenny of Persimmon Homes, the police and taxi firms. I wish to resolve the problems that exist and prevent the increase over the busy period of Christmas. Amazon, the police, some taxi firms and Brian Rush, Chris Harper and myself as councillors have had meetings about this issue in the past as this is only going to get worse if we do not take action to resolve things now. Amazon are changing their car park to assist with the taxi problems but we need taxi firms to work with the changes. Amazon are also looking for an area away from the roundabout for lorries to hold up before being called to drop off/pick up their loads. This area is also to be used for lorries to stop off overnight. I have brought suggestions to the table to prevent lorries, taxis and workers families parking on the hash marking of the roundabout but wait to see what action is taken. I will be looking for both the police and council to take action against taxi companies as well as anyone else parking, dropping off or picking up passengers on the roundabout as this causes unnecessary health and safety issues to residents and others that use the A605. The only way we are going to prevent a possible serious accident is to act now to remove the dangers. The council are arranging the meeting that I have requested to include Persimmon and I hope that together we are able to resolve the issues asap. Cllr Ray Bisby Stanground South. Mobile: 07875640700

Double award win for Regal Park Regal Park Property Company has scooped two prestigious awards, ‘Best Estate Agents in Peterborough’ and ‘Best Estate Agents in PE7’, both voted for by customers. The awards were run by AllAgents.co.uk, the UK's largest customer review website for the property industry. Regal Park is one of Peterborough's newest, established, independent property companies. Launched in 2014 by local entrepreneur, James Trigg, he and his team have a combined 30 years' estate agency experience in the Peterborough area. James Trigg, Managing Director, said: "To win both ‘Best Estate Agents in Peterborough’, and ‘Best Estate Agents in PE7’ is a great achievement for the Regal Park team. "From day one, our aim and ethos has been to change people's perception of estate agents and improve their customer experience. Being voted the best in the city - as well as in our PE7 postcode area, where Regal Park is based, proves that we've tapped into exactly what customers want when they move home.
"Customer service is our number one priority and behind everything we do. Combining this ethos with our wealth of experience in buying and selling property in Peterborough means we're the estate agent people are choosing to use." As well as outstanding customer service and experience, Regal Park is proactive in the ways it interacts with customers. The team uses texts, emails and social media, and its website works optimally on mobile phones and tablets too.
“Our customers are key to our success, and we’re very excited about Regal Park’s future as a respected major player in Peterborough’s thriving property sector.”
So what's next for this award-winning property company? "We're going to continue building on our successes, and working to give customers what they want – an easy and straightforward move. We also have plans to expand our business into other services.

Claiming VAT back on a Motor Car Purchase
Generally speaking, the purchase of any vehicle where there is any element of private use means any reclaim of VAT may be restricted. HMRC’s website offers the following guidance: • You may be able to reclaim all the VAT on a new car if you use it only for business • The car must not be available for private use, and you must be able to show that it isn’t, e.g. it’s specified in your employee’s contract • Private use includes travelling between home and work, unless it’s a temporary place of work Due to the private use restriction, it is usual that no VAT can be recovered on the purchase of a car. However, you may be able to claim all the VAT on a new car if it’s mainly used: • As a taxi • For driving instruction • For self-drive hire If you are buying a commercial vehicle, you can usually reclaim the VAT e.g. a van, a lorry or a tractor. You can only reclaim the VAT if you use the vehicle in a VAT registered business.
Dates to remember - December 2016 Don’t forget the Christmas party! Even the smallest business can host an annual tax-free social function for its entire staff, including the directors and their partners. As long as the cost per head is less than £150 (including VAT), employees are not taxed for having a good time and the company benefits from full tax relief on the expense incurred. 1 December 2016 Due date for Corporation tax for companies with an accounting period ended 29 February 2016. 7 December 2016 Due date for filing and payment of VAT for the period ended 31 October 2016, unless you submit a paper return then the date is 30 November. 30 December 2016 Latest date for filing your 2016 online tax return if you have less than £3,000 tax due and wish to pay it through your PAYE coding during the 2017/2018 tax year. Monthly dates: 19th of the month: Due date for postal payments of PAYE, NIC and CIS deductions and online filing deadline for CIS300 monthly return to HMRC. 22nd of the month: Due date for electronic payments of PAYE, NIC and CIS deductions to HMRC.

Cardea update Kate Ferris (Cardea Residents’Association)
I
’m sure you’ve all have noticed that the development is growing day by day with houses now behind Morrisons, as well as all the way in the other direction, almost touching Peterborough Road. It’s hard to imagine now, what it was like when we moved here in 2011 and joined the small number of families living on the building site,. There were no shops, pub or school and we set up the Cardea Residents’ Association as a way of meeting and getting to know our community members. Out of this has grown many things, the Neighbourhood Watch, Sports Association and First Responders and it’s great to see other groups springing up via our MyCardea Facebook. On a personal level, the thing that I’m most proud of is the Youth Club, which was a year old in August, now with well over forty members, the club provides a meeting place for young people from Stanground, Farcet, Park Farm and Yaxley as well as Cardea, which highlights the fact that teenagers are not catered for in our area when it comes to affordable, accessible facilities. Of course, there are organised associations such as Guides, Scouts, Cadets and sports groups but sometimes young people just want somewhere to hang out, meet friends and do their own thing. As always, we welcome any help and support, whether it be coming along and helping to supervise the sessions or coming up with fundraising ideas, so if you’d like to be involved please get in touch via MyCardea Facebook or by email: Kaferris@icloud.com It doesn’t seem possible but we are already making plans for Christmas in Cardea and are looking forward to our annual visit from Santa. Due to the size of the development now, he will be taking a slightly different route this year, with stops at set points enabling as many children as possible to come and see him. He won’t be able to get down every street, cul-de-sac and avenue, so a route will be planned and announced beforehand so everyone knows where he’ll be and when. Again, if this is something you’d like to be part of or if you would like to donate any goodies for the children, please let me know. Stay safe and whether you live here or visit Cardea, please drive carefully as we are still unadopted by the council and rely on drivers using common sense when it comes to speed and safety on our roads, especially near the school and play park. /MyCardeaUK E: Kawebb@live.co.uk
COMMUNITY NEWS
Do you want to join, or volunteer to help Girl Guides? There are no Girlguiding units in Cardea at present so we are looking for interest from girls who might like to join the Girl Guides. More importantly, we need adult volunteers to be able to run units. Within Stanground there is one Rainbow unit, two Brownie units and one Guide unit, plus a further Brownie unit in Farcet. We have waiting lists for several of the local units and are always looking for adult volunteers as without them we can't increase our unit sizes or open new ones. There are a lot of different ways in which volunteers can help and the benefits to them are multiple. If anyone would like to become involved in Girlguiding they need to log onto the Girlguiding website which is girlguiding.org.uk and choose the 'Get Involved' option. From here people need to enter their details and then, using their postcode, they can select the nearest option to them.

Hospitals chosen as test site for new nursing role Peterborough and Stamford Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust has been selected as a test site for training the first wave of Nursing Associates in the UK. Over 1,000 nursing associates will begin training across the UK this December in a new role that will sit alongside existing nursing care support workers and fully-qualified registered nurses to deliver hands-on care for patients. The role will bridge the gap between health and care support workers, who have a care certificate and graduate registered nurses and offers opportunities for health care assistants to progress into nursing roles. Jo Bennis, Chief Nurse, said: “I am delighted to be involved in the introduction of this exciting new nursing role. Only eleven sites across the country have been chosen to deliver the first wave of training that will run over a two year period and I am proud that this Trust is one of them.” The training sites chosen will bring together a wide range of organisations including Higher Education Institutions (universities), care homes, acute, community and mental health trusts and hospices among others and represent the variety of places where Nursing Associates will provide care for patients.

The Kingfisher Court residents were involved from the beginning in deciding the shape of those services, the songs and music and the content. This is not some churches coming along to “do church” for the residents but it is an active partnership between Kingfisher Court residents and the local churches. Each Thursday, from 10.30 am until 11.15 am, we hold a service, followed by a social time with refreshments provided. Services were initially every other week but at the request of the Kingfisher Court residents this increased to weekly gatherings from October. Recently we have been pleased to welcome friends and neighbours to our “Church at Kingfisher” and we are now open to the public. Any Stanground residents(not

COMMUNITY NEWS
Stanground C of E Churches CHRIST _ _ _ Fill in the blanks to complete the word. CHRISTMAS! For some of our young children here in Stanground this is a puzzle. What does it mean? Why does the name of this special day begin with a swear word? Yes, seriously. We are very blessed that most of our primary schools teach the story and the true meaning of Christmas, but there are still children even in Stanground who don’t have the first idea why we celebrate on 25 December. ‘Christ’ is a Greek word meaning ‘chosen one’, literally anointed one, like a king or queen would be anointed with oil when they are crowned. Jesus is God’s chosen one, who came to teach us and to save us and to lead us to God, his father and ours. The Christmas story is the start of all this.
Sharing the message of Jesus ◆ New church, new community ◆ Warm welcome to all
◆ Relaxed, relevant & respectful Now meeting at Cardea Community Sports Pavilion, Bellona Drive, Peterborough PE2 8GP.

SCHOOL NEWS
Little Acorns
Day Nursery and Montessori School Choosing the right nursery… Choosing a nursery school can be confusing but making the right choice will give your child a great head start in life. Sending your child to nursery school teaches them to communicate, develop physically and creatively. It helps them to develop their social skills, encourages independence and allows them the opportunity to form friendships and most importantly introduces structure and routine to help for primary school. At Little Acorns, our aim is to provide your child with the highest standard of care and support to your child’s time with us to make it enjoyable whilst they learn though our teaching methods.
Montessori teaching… We incorporate the national curriculum with the Montessori teaching method, as part of the government promoted teaching method and the Montessori way, there are activities and learning goals that are appropriate for each age group throughout the day. The Montessori methods fundamental focus is on the needs, talents and special individuality of each child. We believe children learn best in their own way and at their own pace. The child controls the pace, topic and repetition of lessons in a controlled goal oriented environment. The motivational concept is the encouragement of the child’s natural joy of learning which is an instinctive part of any child. When properly guided the method results in a well adjusted
person who has purpose and direction in their life. At Little Acorns we remain dedicated to our goals and constantly re evaluate our services to make sure we offer parents and children a standard of childcare that is second to none. What we have been up to… It’s the time of year where we have been celebrating different festivals and events. The children have enjoyed celebrating diwali, Halloween and bonfire night. The children made lanterns and coloured in rangoli patterns to celebrate Diwali. Dressed up for Halloween and had a party, and firework and bonfire pictures using glitters and spray paints. We would like to wish you all a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

Forest for Peterborough
ENVIRONMENT
Pick up a spade and join in Forest for Peterborough’s tree planting events this season!
W
ant to make a difference to your local environment? Want to volunteer with a project that is creating a long-lasting impact for the area and its residents? Don’t miss joining in special tree planting days this season! The independent charity Peterborough Environment City Trust (PECT) is gearing up to begin another tree planting season with its Forest for Peterborough project. 6,000 trees are due to be planted throughout the city and surrounding areas between October 2016 and March 2017. Volunteers can drop-in to tree planting events at Sacrewell Farm (PE8 6HJ) on the 26th November, and 3rd and 10th December. The planting sessions will take place between 10.30am-4.30pm (last arrivals at 3.30pm). Volunteers for the tree planting will gain free entry to the planting event.
“Since the project launched in 2010, Forest for Peterborough has planted an amazing 93,609 trees across the city,” explains Project Officer Simon Belham. “We are so grateful for the support of our volunteers each year and the hard work they put in to improve the
local environment for the benefit of residents and wildlife.” Forest for Peterborough is aiming to plant over 180,000 trees in and around the city and surrounding countryside by 2030. The target is to plant one tree for every person in the city in order to improve tree coverage, improve our green spaces, and the quality of air we breathe. Companies and communities can get involved with the planting days: “It was lovely to meet the team leading the tree planting; they were very friendly and helpful,” explains Kelly Towers from The National Flooring Company. “I would recommend other companies to take part, because it not only supports your local community and their environmental efforts, it provides an opportunity to team-build with colleagues and inform others.”
Forest for Peterborough is grateful for the support of Peterborough City Council. Please register your attendance with our project officer at simon.belham@ pect.org.uk or call 07715 372432. Calling is advised on the day, because events may be cancelled due to poor weather conditions or finish early due to all trees being planted. Please wear appropriate clothing for outdoor work and sturdy footwear. All equipment will be supplied and no prior skills are required. All ages welcome. PECT delivers projects which make a real difference to local communities. Support PECT’s work by donating, simply text PECT20 and the amount you want to donate to 70070 (texts are free and 100% of your donation goes directly to PECT.)

With a keen eye on fashion James already shows signs that he is going to be a great asset to the Barber Pod. Educated at Nene Park he has spent the last few years playing football for Posh and St Neots. Always keen on barbering, James has decided to use his hands as well as his feet and we are glad he has chosen us to start his career in this great trade.
Darren Darren has been in the trade 30 years and has trained many barbers

Abbie has been building up a strong clientele over the last few years from young lads to busy businessman all choosing her for her great cuts and warm personality. In her spare time Abbie works with deaf and blind people. She learnt to use Sign language at the young age of 10 years old and has used the skill ever since. Abbie says “I’m really looking forward to the new challenge and new adventure of the Barber Pod and looking forward to welcoming all our new customers, along with all her existing clients to the Pod”.
He spent his first 6 years training under Mick Bird who had been a member of the British Men's Hairdressing Team. "I was lucky to get such good training from such an experienced and passionate hairdresser and I still use some of his training methods for our apprentices" Darren then moved on to work in one of the oldest, busiest Barber shops in the region where he continued to learn and built up a strong clientele before setting up his own Barbershop in 1993. He has trained many Barbers who have since opened their own barber shops. He has also taught the Barbering Course at Peterborough regional college. "I've always enjoyed the teaching side of my job, passing on the knowledge is always a joy. I love how you keep learning in this trade as fashions and trends change, move on and also take inspiration from the past. You meet new people all the time and every day is different".
SPORT
Further financial boost for Peterborough Referees Association
Peterborough Sports and Leisure
For the second season in row, local charity Vivacity have agreed to sponsor the development section of the association, which is now in its 6th season.
J
on Marsden, Director of Sport and Healthy Living at Vivacity said: “We appreciate that the Peterborough Referees Association is a small organisation but the impact and benefit of the grant we gave them last year was so great, that we wanted to support them again. With support from Vivacity, the Association has enabled hundreds of footballers to take part in their favourite sport supported by quality match officials. This makes the game more enjoyable for all. We have seen the positive effect of our support and the work that the Association has done throughout the Peterborough area and are proud to be part of it.”
The Peterborough Referees Association Chairman, Robert Windle said: “Initially our arrangement with Vivacity was for one season, so for us to be considered for and to receive a second £2,000 is fantastic news. The funding will be used to support new and young referees in their early games and we will ensure that they are mentored and gain enough confidence to continue from junior into adult football”. For details on how to become a football referee please contact Robert Windle on 07970 228790.
With their 10th birthday approaching in December, the Peterborough Referees Association were delighted to receive an early birthday present from Vivacity Culture and Leisure, in the form of a £2,000 grant.
About Vivacity Vivacity is an independent, not-for-profit organisation with charitable status. We manage many of Peterborough’s popular culture and leisure facilities including six leisure centres across the city, nine libraries, the Museum, Flag Fen, Longthorpe Tower, Peterborough City Gallery and the Key Theatre. Stanground Sports It has been a positive start to the season for many of the Stanground Sport Youth FC teams, particularly the under 12s who are playing in their first season of competitive league football.
O
ctober has been a busy month for the team having played 5 games. Even though they recorded a loss to local Peterborough side Malborne in the Hunts Cup, they have achieved 4 points in the league. Their best result, however, came in the Hereward Cup against a strong Gunthorpe side as in form striker Jake Clair scored a brace to help deliver the 3-0 win. These great performances have seen striker Harry Drew score 9 goals and playmaking wizard Dylan Brandon-Llyod bagging 8 goals in 6 games. Jack Foord has also been
in sparkling form receiving ‘man of match’ on several occasions. The under 13s have also made a great start to the season, despite this being their first year playing in an 11 aside format. Last year the team were crowned champions of Division 4 and having been promoted, they have continued to produce a series of good results. Although being another team to lose in the Hunts Cup, the Stanground under 13s team have a 100% record in the league, winning all 4 of their matches. In recent matches, they have recorded convincing wins
Stanground Sports U-13s with the FA Cup after their 5-1 win over Yaxley.
including a 7-1 victory against a struggling Kingscliffe side and 5-1 win against local rivals Yaxley. These performances have seen star striker Ali Mavani score 9 goals in 5 games and his new strike partner Sam Browning hit 4 goals and catching the eye in his debut season. The under 14s had a disappointing 2015/16 season but have started this campaign strongly as they are currently placed 3rd in their league. An impressive victory against Spalding, including a star performance from Liam Killingray who scored 4 goals, helping Stanground to a 16-1 win. Although
they’ve had some great results in the league, the under 14s also didn’t fair very well in the Hunts Cup, losing to cross-county rivals Sawtry, however this means they can focus on building towards their impressive league start. Striker Joshua Lovelock has stared this month notching 7 goals for the team. Elsewhere in the club, the development squad, the under 8s and under 9s teams are all making fantastic progress, making massive improvements each week, which is starting to show in the results they are recording.

Easy Christmas cake recipe This delicious Christmas cake is packed with great flavour and fruit but it doesn’t need aging. This is perfect to be served over the Christmas period and you can easily add your own twist to this simple recipe. This serves up to 12 people.
Method
Christmas
cake
The Christmas cake that we know and love today can be dated back to two customs which merged into one in around 1870. The two customs were the eating of a plum porridge on Christmas Eve, and a fine cake.
1. Preheat the oven to 220 C / Gas 7. 2. Line and grease a 25cm (10 in) cake tin. 3. Rub the margarine into the flour then add the sugar, fruit spice and almonds. 4. Pour the eggs into the mixture and add a little milk. Beat well so that the cake mixture should just be able to drop off a spoon, adding a little more milk if necessary. 5. Pour the cake mixture into the prepared tin. 6. Bake in the middle of the oven for 1 hour, then reduce the heat to 120 C / Gas ½ for a further two hours until a skewer inserted into the centre comes out clean. 7. Cool on a rack before decorating.
Ingredients 225g (8 oz) margarine 340g (12 oz) plain flour, sifted 225g (8 oz) caster sugar 1 teaspoon mixed spice 110g (4 oz) glace cherries, halved 110g (4 oz) mixed peel, finely chopped 225g (8 oz) raisins 225g (8 oz) currants 225g (8 oz) sultanas 110g (4 oz) blanched almonds, finely chopped 4 eggs, beaten Full fat milk

COMMUNITY NEWS
creativity Capturing
with Art in the Park
Following a successful request to Arts Council England, Nene Park Trust is pleased to announce that Charron Pugsley-Hill will become the first ever Artist-in Residence for a year until September 2017.
Charron is an internationally-working artist and previously a wildlife conservationist with Natural England who has been based in Peterborough for over 20 years and has a wealth of knowledge and experience of the Park. She creates large, colourful paintings based on her interaction with the natural world and has recently worked on installations, live demonstrations, workshops and textile work. Charron is known for her public engagement successes, collaborating with schools and organisations to create artwork that connects people to the beauty of nature. Earlier in the year, Charron created the “Sky of Poppies” textile art installation at Queensgate Centre Peterborough, commemorating the Battle of the Somme. Over the next 12 months and with Charrons’ help, the Trust will be expanding the range of art-based activities on offer at Nene Park. This will include seasonal sketching workshops and walks, creation of a tapestry in collaboration with local volunteers, nature-based art workshops with local art students and a week of activities encouraging families to appreciate and participate in art in the Park. Charron will lead the programme of events whilst creating her Park-inspired work, which will be exhibited in a beautiful
natural setting during the residence period. The residence period will also allow the Trust to expand its connections with the wider creative community in Peterborough, providing local artists with increased opportunities to use the Park as inspiration for their artistic activities. Charron Pugsley-Hill says “I am absolutely thrilled to have been appointed to work with Nene Park Trust in a place that I personally have spent many happy hours over my time in Peterborough. It’s so exciting to have the opportunity to share and engage others in my colourful energetic art that will be inspired by this precious place and the people that come there to enjoy all it has to offer. I am truly grateful to the Trust and The Arts Council for this opportunity for myself and the people of Peterborough and look forward to creating art that will inspire and enthuse over the coming months” The first art installation, Persephone’s Bed, will take place in Ferry Meadows on Sunday 30 October and will be followed by a seasonal walk with creative session two days later, on 1 November. This fantastic opportunity has been made possible thanks to public funding by the National Lottery through Arts Council England.

COMMUNITY NEWS
Cambridgeshire Fire and Rescue It is the time of year when we’re enjoying a tipple with friends, cooking heaps of delicious food and decking the halls.
Potted trees also available
The fire service has these messages to make sure your festive cheer doesn’t go up in smoke: • Kitchens are a fire hotspot, so take care while cooking festive fancies. Never leave cooking unattended and turn off appliances when not in use. • Switch off fairy lights and unplug them before you go to bed or leave the house. Make sure they conform to the British Standard and never overload plug sockets. • Be careful when drinking alcohol while smoking or cooking. • Finally, make sure you have a working smoke alarm which is correctly fitted and works. And NEVER take the batteries out to power presents! For the latest news, incidents and safety advice, or to contact us, log on to www.cambsfire.gov.uk. Wrapping Are you one of those people who leave all their wrapping until Christmas Eve and end up using a bit of birthday paper because you run out of Christmas wrapping?
W
hy not plan ahead and take a little more time this year. It can be really satisfying to see all your gifts looking beautiful under the tree and receive lots of compliments when you hand them out. There are lots of different types of wrapping available including paper, bags, huge sacks, tubs and boxes. You can also get lots of accessories from craft shops to add a unique twist. Here are some tips and suggestions to help:-. If using wrapping paper, measure it first and trim off the excess. Decide how much you need by wrapping a ribbon around the gift and then laying the ribbon on the paper and cutting it to that size. Alternatively, use a tape or ruler. If you have trouble cutting gift wrap in a straight line, look for
brands that have grid lines on the reverse. If you can’t get these, mark the paper where you need to cut it and then fold it and cut along the crease. Keep any off cuts as these may fit smaller gifts. This will also help avoid waste. If your gift consists of a number of boxes try making a tower and wrapping ribbon round the whole. Even if your gifts don’t come in boxes, you could put them in some to make wrapping easier. This is also the art of disguise and can create an element of fun. Even those who think they know what you are buying them will start to wonder. When wrapping something soft like a scarf or a jumper, lay the item on a piece of cardboard, This will give you a firm base and mean that
Tips and techniques for beautiful gifts By Susan Brookes-Morris you can create clean corners and crisp edges. For oddly shaped presents, you can create a better effect by padding out unusual angles with tissue paper or using a gift bag. Try creating a cracker shape for tubular gifts. If your present has a circular bottom, pleat the paper to get a neat finish. To avoid getting in a tangle, buy tape which is on a dispenser and •Fully qualified foot health professional •Thickened and fungal conditions •Specialising in the diabetic and neurovascular patient •Home visits or surgery •Dressing and padding •Verruca treatments •Ingrown toe nails •Blister treatment •Nail Clippings •Athletes foot
use double sided tape where it will help. Create a wow factor by colour coordinating your wrapping or using the same design for all of a persons presents. You could also use plain wrapping and be creative with patterned tape, add homemade gift tags or create a pocket effect in which you insert a card or other decoration.

CONSUMER ADVICE
Don’t let the pick pockets ruin your seasonal shopping and festive cheer
by Eileen Le Voi
While we are being increasingly warned about telephone scams and credit card fraud – police have issued a warning about a seasonal crime which any of us could become a victim of. With many people entering the festive spirit and hitting the High Street with their Christmas shopping list, it’s the pick pockets who are out to spoil our seasonal fun – and actually cause a lot of heartache and misery. A fresh wave of pick pockets and purse dippers are taking their chances (particularly in the crowded city centre), and without an ounce of goodwill – are now shockingly targeting charity shops. It’s so easy when we are busy and in a rush not to zip up bags or put phones away property, but it is so very important to be extra vigilant and careful at this time of year, especially in light of Cambridgeshire Constabulary’s warning.
Remember to:
Wise up to pick pocket tricks:
Keep your valuables out of sight. Zip up hand and shoulder bags. Carry bags in front of you with flaps against your body. Keep straps short and bags tucked under your arm. Don’t show your money - keep it safely in your pocket and when using the ATM, always ensure that your money has been secured in your purse or wallet before turning away.
The Helpful Stranger someone may approach you and say that you have something on your jacket or coat and will automatically rub it off, allowing them to get close to you
The Distraction typically using a map, a stranger may ask you for directions and whilst you are pointing out directions on the map, another person will carry out the pickpocket whilst you are distracted
The Hugger Mugger a stranger may pretend to be sociable and friendly and will put their arms around you or link their arm through yours with a view to picking your pockets
The Stall as a lot of pickpockets work in pairs, they will identify their victim and one person will deliberately stand in front you, at a counter, getting on a train or bus etc., and will stall for some reason - the other person is directly behind the victim allowing them to get up close to carry out the crime
The Easy Dip pickpockets will be watching and if your bag or backpack is left open, they may follow you until they get the opportunity to dip in and remove easy items that are on show
The Concealed Hand pickpockets often use items such as a newspaper to cover their hand whilst they carry out the crime
Remember to be extra vigilant in crowded shops and whilst in queues. Wishing you all a safe and Happy Christmas from Safe Local Trades.
Safe Local Trades can recommend trusted and reliable tradespeople across a wide range of areas – all of which come with a customer seal of approval. Go to www.safelocaltrades.com or telephone 01733 530019

Record your bin collection Garden Waste Bulky Waste WEEE re-use facility Love Your Community Recycling By Community
Get involved!
Based on your community’s performance, community residual waste and recycling tonnage will be analysed and measured every four months. Every time recycling improves in your area, you will earn green points to help move your community up the leader board. We will compare how much your area has recycled compared to the same time last year and if it’s more, you will be rewarded with green points. Plus, every four months the individual that has contributed the most points to their community will win a £50 voucher.
Once registered you can vote for the community project of your choice. Cardea Neighbourhood Watch helps members of the community to feel safe and secure in their local area and deter criminal activity. The scheme has been growing in numbers and reach, with hundreds on their circulation lists and 5 deputies at present to help to help safeguard the area. Money raised through the Love Peterborough, Love your Community scheme will be used to buy Neighbourhood Watch signs for all streets in Cardea, as well as for setting up and running a website for the scheme. Funding would also be used for banners/ advertising and for running meetings in the wider Stanground area to share best practice and purchase signs for the wider Stanground area.
