Hope into Action

Sleeping Rough Hope into Action, the Peterborough-based homeless charity, brought over sixty people together to sleep rough on Friday night to raise awareness for homelessness in the City. People from across the city and from all walks of life slept under cardboard in a field in Ferry Meadows to highlight the plight of the homeless in Peterborough. Members of the prison service, police, church leaders, the High Sheriff of Cambridgeshire, former homeless people, ex addicts, the general public and staff from Hope into Action slept under the stars and listened to the real life experiences of what life is like for the homeless by former homeless people themselves. The night was a great success with nearly ten thousand pounds raised for Hope into Action, which will be used to support the most vulnerable people in Peterborough and beyond. Hope into Action, the award winning Peterboroughbased charity which houses the homeless in partnership with local churches, hosted its first Big Sleep Out at Ferry Meadows on Friday 10th October to coincide with World Homeless Day and highlight.

Stanground & Farcet C of E Churches by The Revd Anne Shorter, Vicar of Stanground

Christmas, definition: the day we celebrate the coming of Jesus to be with us!

SPECIAL CHRISTMAS SERVICES IN STANGROUND CHURCHES

I have a beautiful painting of Mary, Jesus’ mother, on my desk. It is done in pastels, gentle blues and whites and greys, all in soft focus. A young woman is sitting in a very relaxed way, curled up and gazing at something really beautiful, the new life growing inside her as she waits for the birth of her baby son. God has given her a gift of new life and she is amazed, incredulous, overjoyed and complete. The picture shows her cradling a glowing ball of power and light! This intimate and very personal event is what we all celebrate every year on 25th December. At the heart of Christmas is a moment in which God is born into a human life and lives alongside us in our human state and shares in our experiences. The carol, O Little Town of Bethlehem is one of my favourites because it describes what happens to anyone who is willing to be like Mary and welcome Jesus into their lives. We sing to Jesus, ‘Be born in us today’.

And of course, you are invited to our churches over Christmas. A card with details of all the services in Stanground at The Baptist Church, St John’s, St Michael’s will be coming to your door very soon!

Taxation

Question: I believe I have to file a self-assessment tax return and have been told I should have a U.T.R. – what is this? Answer: U.T.R. stands for “Unique Taxpayer Reference” that is a 10-digit number completely unique to you and without this you will not be able to file a tax return. The deadline for filing your 2014 tax return is 31 January 2015, so if you have not registered for self assessment you should do so as soon as possible. It could take up to six weeks to receive your U.T.R. as without it HMRC will not allow you to file your return leaving you open for potential penalties.

Bird & Co News

The deadline for online self-assessment tax returns is31stJanuary 2015– if you miss this deadline and without a “reasonable excuse” you will receive a late filing penalty that may increase the longer you delay submitting your return. You also have to ensure you complete your return correctly as an unfortunate man,or depending on your point of view, from Evesham failed to do.HMRC returned his tax return to him after he “apparently” answered one of the questions incorrectly. In response to the question“do you have anyone dependent on you?The man answered: “2.1 million illegal immigrants, 1.1 million crack heads, 2.2 million unemployable Jeremy Kyle scroungers, 900,000 criminals in over 85 prisons, plus 650 idiots in Parliament, and the whole of the European Commission.”HMRC deemed this response as unacceptable. To this, the man replied saying“who did I miss out?”Comments on a postcard please to HMRC!

Dates to remember 1 November 2014 - Due date for Corporation tax for companies with an accounting period ended 31 January 2014. 19 November 2014 - PAYE and NIC deductions due for month ended 5 November 2014. Cardea Update Greetings from Cardea! By this time, I’m sure that most of us have at least made a good start on the Christmas preparations, at least I hope we have! December is a very busy and tiring time for most of us with shopping, buying gifts, school nativity plays and carol concerts to organise and fit in to our timetables.

Do you recognise yourself in any of these pictures?

OLD STANGROUND These pictures were from 1969 when Southfields Junior School went on a 10 day cruise on S.S. Uganda (later used as a hospital ship in the Falklands conflict), to Andalsnes in Norway, Copenhagen and Amsterdam.

The first picture next to the coach was taken 11th May 1969 as we were about to leave school.

The other pictures were taken on board on deck and in the classroom. It was an experience I shall never forget, in a good way.

Pictures kindly sent in by Greg Briers of Oundle Road Peterborough

For the parents in families it’s a time of trying to entertain and please everyone; many people have family and friends to stay for the holidays and this in itself can sometimes feel like a military operation and we can all become caught up in the act of feeding all our visitors to bursting point. Cardea is a young growing community with lots of families with young children and Christmas will no doubt see many parties and family gatherings over here; in fact, I’ve heard that there may be a “special visitor” coming to say ‘hello’ and check that all these young people are being good in readiness for December 25th… As well as being a season for friends and family to get together, for the majority the festive season can be stressful and a source of worry for others, it’s easy to feel pressured into spending a fortune on the latest ‘must have’ toys for the kiddies that will break the bank and more often than not be discarded by the little ones by January. I wish you all a happy & peacef ul Christmas. Plea se keep the true meaning of this time in your m ind as you go thro ugh the season and I hope that the ne w year brings m uch health, wealth & happiness to all.

try to keep in mind the true meaning of Christmas; a time for goodwill and peace to all men (women & children too). Try not to get into debt over non essentials and enjoy what you do have. If you have a neighbour who lives alone, why not drop by just to say ‘hello’ and better still, invite them to share some of the spoils of the season with you. Sometimes just a simple mince pie and a cuppa can mean a lot. On the same theme, if you feel the need for a breather and a bit of time out from Christmas craziness, please drop in to our December Saturday Coffee Morning at St Michael’s School, from 10-12; there’s room for the children to play while you catch up on the latest chat, talk to CRA members or simply have a break with a tea/coffee and biscuits. It would be great to see as many folk as possible, so as always, bring a friend or neighbour too.

The Great Stanground Academy Bake Off! The Stanground Academy has had an excellent start to the new academic year. The art, design and technology department have been working extremely hard to promote creativity and inspire the students at the Academy, getting involved in this year’s ‘Young Chef Competition’ run by the Rotary Club of Great Britain & Ireland. The organisation is run predominately by volunteers, offering young people the chance to develop personal skills and create a better awareness of the problems that face the world today. In order for the Academy to decide who they should enter into the competition they decided to hold a ‘Bake Off’. The response was overwhelming, with 14 participants taking part on the day. The competition was extremely close and the senior leaders and Principal, Mr Ged Rae, were invited to decide who should go forward and represent the Academy. The students were given marks for presentation, taste, health, safety, hygiene, planning and preparation.

The school will then invite the other secondary schools from the Peterborough area to the Academy to showcase their work for judging. The Heron Following on from the recent Knightfest charity day, The Heron have told us how delighted they were with all the support they’ve received. It was a phenomenal turn out for a great cause, Alzheimer Research UK, which raised over £1,200. Meri wanted us to pass on massive thanks to all those involved in the organising, the staff who worked solidly from open to close, the bands who gave up their time, the volunteers who manned the bar and glass washer and everyone else involved. Stanground did them proud!

The Heron’s quiz is now on a Tuesday with ‘Play Your Cards Right’ straight after. They are looking for a darts team for next season. Their only criteria is that players must be able to hit the dartboard!

The Golden Lion The sign now says ‘Under Offer’ so we might not have heard the last of this popular pub.

r e n n i d s a m t s i to Chr

Christmas Eve evening Take the turkey out of the fridge, cover with foil and allow it to come to room temperature. Do the same with the stuffing and butter so that it softens for the morning. With all the newly created space, fill up the fridge with wines, mineral water and fresh juice

Christmas day: lunch to be served at 2:00pm 7.30am Preheat the oven and prepare the turkey

Early December Order your turkey or buy a frozen one now. To work out what size you need, count on serving 450g per person. A frozen turkey will need 4–5 days to thaw. Make and freeze your mince pies. Think about the tabletop decorations if you’re planning something special. (Check out ABC Meats advert on page 30 or Moor Farm Meats below).

One week before Christmas Start to defrost the turkey at the back of the fridge. Write your shopping list and purchase all non-perishables (don’t forget pet food). Buy milk in cartons and freeze in case of emergency.

Two days before Christmas Make cranberry sauce and store in the fridge. For stuffings and bread sauce, you will need stale bread. Cut and cube it now and lay it out on a baking tray in a single layer. Make sure all napkins and tablecloths are washed and ironed. Wash or polish cutlery, glasses, serving dishes and china.

Facebook “f ” Logo

Pick up the flowers you ordered for the table. If possible, wait until Christmas Eve to buy vegetables, salads and fish; if not, buy them now.

Christmas Eve morning Pick up fresh turkey. Do last minute shopping. Prepare turkey gravy. Defrost mince pies. Prepare your chosen pudding and refrigerate. If you’re serving a traditional pudding, make brandy butter and refrigerate.

Christmas Eve afternoon Prepare stuffings. Don’t refrigerate, but leave covered in a cool place. The stuffings should not be too cold when you stuff the turkey. Prepare the vegetables. Peel potatoes and put in cold water in the fridge. Prepare other vegetables and store in plastic bags in the fridge. Make bread sauce. Cover tightly with cling film and store in the fridge. Set the table.

8.15am Make the bread sauce if you haven’t already. If you are using a warming oven, put in the required plates and serving dishes. Set up coffee and tea trays for later. 11:30am Prepare sausage and bacon rolls for cooking. Reheat bread sauce and place it in a jug with butter on top to melt over the surface, and keep warm. Noon: Start steaming the Christmas pudding. If you’re drinking red wine with your meal, you may want to give it time to breathe.; open now. You’ve survived the morning, well done! Pour yourself a glass of bucks fizz to celebrate! 12:45pm: Make the roast potatoes and prepare saucepans of boiling water for sprouts and any other vegetables. 1:15pm: Remove turkey from oven, cover loosely with foil and leave to rest. 1:30pm: Check bacon rolls, remove and keep warm. 1:45pm: Put sprouts on to cook and gravy on to heat. While they are cooking, dish up food into serving dishes and carve the turkey. Check Christmas pudding. 2:00pm:

Pet Care

• Don’t leave presents for you pets under the Christmas tree, that giant bone may look really cute all wrapped under the tree but it smells even better than it looks when you have four paws and may not stay wrapped up for very long. • Redirect your cats energy from redecorating your tree with a scratching post. Your cat needs to be able to fully stretch up a post and so it should be at least a metre tall for them to really enjoy it. And for any cat that still needs a bit of persuasion deploy Dad’s Monopoly tactic (cheat) – yes a sprinkling of catnip should do the trick!

For cats, the most common problem vets see at Christmas is the ingestion of tinsel or the string from cooked hams and other meats. • Scented candles and plug ins can trigger allergies especially in cats, if you notice your pet sneezing or scratching more than usual stop using the offending scent. • If you are having a party and have animals that get nervous or scared by strangers, large groups or loud noises (these can also manifest as being aggressive or attention seeking behaviour), or if you have a new furry edition to the family this Christmas, here are some tips for you.

• Most of us like to share a bit of our Christmas dinner with our pets and don’t worry I’m not about to spoil that tradition. While giving your rabbit a carrot or two will do little to effect their weight, a Christmas dinner with all the trimmings can come to well over 800 calories*. Putting on an extra lb at Christmas for humans is generally no big deal, but an extra pound on your Westie would be over a 12% increase in body weight for them!

Ensure your pet has a quite area where it can be away from people if it wants. Dogs especially when they are young tend to like a small space they can call their own so using a dog crate and covering with a blanket in a quite room is ideal, remember it’s not just floor space that can seem huge when you are that small but also the height to the ceiling.

• Giving your cat or dog turkey and gravy is a great treat either on it’s own or mixed in with their regular food, but try to resist adding all the trimmings into their bowls as well.

Investing in a pheromone diffuser may be a good option for both young and old cats and dogs, these simply plug into an electrical socket and emit an odourless pheomone that calms and reduces pet stress.

• Staying with the topic of food, beware of some hidden dangers to your pet. Chocolate and dried fruit should be kept away from dogs, and if any large volume of either (or high coco content chocolate) is consumed you should seek advice from your vet as these are toxic to dogs.

Facebook “f ” Logo

Young pets often also find a warm hot water bottle or soft toy that they can cuddle up to comforting, some also like a ticking clock as the rhythmic noise can be comforting like their mothers heart beat.

We hope our tips help make your Christmas stress free and the most magical yet.

Merry Christmas from everyone at Best Friends Veterinary Group! * information taken from www.weightlossresources.co.uk

Top tips for a quick divorce There is no such thing as a quickie divorce in England and Wales. The whole idea, perpetuated by the media, is a myth. Whoever you are and however much money you have, the fastest a divorce can conclude is around 16 weeks. This is because each stage has time constraints attached. There are things you can do though to make sure it moves quickly and the best advice, as cold as it may seem, is to be the one to start the divorce. If you are on the receiving end of a divorce you cannot control how quickly it moves along. By starting the divorce you are in the driving seat meaning you have a clear start to the process rather than hanging around thinking “will they, won’t they” for what may be months. Here are some other top tips: • Keep the particulars (“reasons”) as gentle as possible. Unreasonable behaviour is the most common ground for divorce but it requires you to list examples of behaviour that you find to be unacceptable. Whilst you may be keen to put the knife in and point out everything they have ever done to annoy you, you actually only need to fill out a very small paragraph. The judge isn’t looking for anything exciting, he just wants evidence that the marriage has irretrievably broken down. Keep them general to avoid getting the other party’s back up which could make them more likely to contest the divorce, which you really don’t want • Obtain an official copy of your marriage certificate, or dig out the original, early on. The court cannot start the process without this. Very often, this adds a delay at the start, as it can take up to 14 days to get a copy of a certificate from the church or Register Office. • Warn your spouse before you start. Most defended divorce proceedings are as a result of not preparing the other side who may retaliate if they suddenly get a letter out of the blue. Agree as much about the process with your spouse as you can in advance, including the wording of the particulars – that way, they won’t object when they see the paperwork and will sign it promptly.

• Use a solicitor to at least offer you guidance on the forms. The process can be wordy and misleading in parts. Every mistake results in a delay, and usually an amendment fee at the court. There has been a growing trend for people to do as much as possible themselves without legal advice but this can cause delays. You might think you are saving money by scrimping on solicitors, but the reality is it is likely to cost you more time and more money in the end. Some parts of this advice will be easier to follow than others and, whatever you do, you cannot second guess the actions of the other party. However, if you do take these tips on board it gives you the best chance of getting as close to that mythical “quickie divorce” as possible. Stanground Blog

I was thinking...

It’s nearly Christmas! Well then, nearly Christmas already, thankfully I’m writing this in November, so I’m not yet fed up with the whole debacle of the event and I can look at the whole thing optimistically. Well, almost.

Soon the pressure will be on for me to begin the annual crusade of present buying, something I’ve always struggled with, since it almost always means me putting some kind of effort in on my part. Typically each year I’ll wait for that magical email from Amazon to tell me when the last ordering day is for delivery before christmas. I find ordering everyones presents at once on that date gives some kind of adrenaline rush, honestly, it’s about as exciting as shopping gets for me. Invariably Yodel, who somehow still have a contract with Amazon, will inevitably let me down with deliveries due to their being the most useless company on the face of the earth and I am saved of the bother of wrapping up presents for most of the people I buy for. Something I do have a problem with though is this new trend of Christmas adverts companies insist on putting out onto the TV each year. John Lewis are the worst offenders of this one, I can’t say I’ve seen their offering this year yet, but if the past couple of of years are anything to go by it’ll be another depressing spectacle designed to play on your emotions when you least expect it. I feel sad enough eating my microwaved dinner by myself without that. Christmas music! Ah Christmas music, somehow being wonderful and terrible at the same time. I find I can tolerate Christmas music for about a week before I become utterly sick of it. I think my least favourite has to be that Mariah Carey one, I can’t recall the title right now and that’s something I don’t want in my google history. I do actually have a favourite one though, Things I Want by Tenacious D, probably not something I’d recommend playing during a family gathering however. But it’s retail workers I feel sorry for, having to listen to an endless loop of the same Christmas songs every year. The horror. Undoubtedly the best part of Christmas is the food though, the mountains and mountains of food. Last year I managed to make the sweets and chocolate I go last until the second week of January, and considering the amount of sweets and chocolate I eat, that’s quite an achievement. That all pales in comparison though to the almighty meal that is Christmas dinner. I’m not sure why I like it so much, it’s basically just another roast dinner, but there’s something special about the whole affair. That and the pigs in blankets as well. Bacon makes everything better. I guess I should wrap it up here by wishing anyone who is actually reading this a very merry Christmas, Just try not to eat too much.

Good neighbours stop rogue traders

Are you a good neighbour? Do you want to protect vulnerable residents from rogue traders?

Rogue traders bring misery to

With as many as 170,000 incidents thousands of households. We want of doorstep crime occurring people to be on the lookout for nationally each year, the National doorstep crime in their community, Consumer Week 2014 ‘Good to help stop neighbours falling Neighbours Stop Rogue Traders’ victim to rogues” campaign encouraged neighbours, friends, families and carers to nominate themselves to discourage rogue traders. These traders often cold call and offer to carry-out repairs which are poor quality, unnecessary and charged at extortionate prices, sometimes even driving the victim to the bank to withdraw money or threatening them.

The detriment of doorstep crime reaches beyond financial loss. It can cause a person’s mental health to deteriorate and in some cases, suffer physical harm. Signs that an unwanted doorstep caller is visiting a neighbour •

Traders have been cold calling in the area

A builder’s van is parked nearby, particularly one that doesn’t include a company name or contact details

Building or maintenance work on your neighbour’s garden or house starts unexpectedly

Poor quality work is visible on the roof, driveway or property

Your neighbour appears anxious or distressed

Your neighbour visits the bank, building society, or post office more frequently, particularly if they are accompanied by a trader

What can I do? •

Ask your neighbour in private - in person or on the phone - if things are OK

If they are displeased, suggest calling a relative or carer on their behalf

Note any vehicle registration numbers

Keep hold of any flyers you have received through your door

As if the trader has left any paperwork and put it in a clean food bag

If you suspect a crime, call the Citizens Advice consumer helpline on 03454 04 05 06 or your local trading standards office

If the situation with the trader becomes volatile, call the police
