Local church news Is February so it must be Valentine’s Day soon. What a romantic day for our first wedding of the year. We have 14 couples so far who have booked to get married with us in 2014 and what a joy it is to be with them as they take this exciting step in their lives together. Most people who choose a church wedding want a fair bit of tradition with the organ playing as they walk down the aisle, but in church you can actually be as adventurous as you want. At a Christmas wedding last year we had the wonderful choir called ‘A Handful of Harmonies’ singing ‘The Chapel of Love’ and Beyonce’s Ave Maria.
You don’t have to be a regular church goer to get married in church. Wanting to marry in church does not make you a hypocrite or anything like that and I certainly won’t think that. So if you live in Stanground or have a family connection with Stanground or St John’s Church there is every chance that you would be able to have your
wedding here. There is a beautiful wedding video on our website that might inspire you. I am also really delighted to be able offer a service of blessing or a renewal of marriage vows to anyone celebrating a special anniversary. Charity Ball for FASD Trust While most people now are accepting the fact that drinking alcohol when pregnant is maybe not a good idea, what the majority of people have still not realised is that if you do drink when pregnant you are running the risk of your child being born with a condition called FASD (Foetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders).
Are you a local tradesperson?
If you are a local tradesper son or service provider, then you need to be in the Handy Numbers! Call 01733 757342 or email sales@stangroundgazette.co .uk
Alcohol is an “interference” that can cause the normal development of the foetus, particularly the brain, to be disrupted. Unfortunately, once this damage is done it cannot be repaired or cured. This means that those born with FASD will struggle with behaviour, learning and physical difficulties for their entire lifetime. The FASD Trust is the only national charity supporting those affected by FASD, their parents / carers and wider family. As FASD as a condition is not well-known, many people affected feel isolated, which is why The FASD Trust runs support groups across the UK including one in Peterborough for local families, to which the children come along. International research has shown that the adults with FASD who do best are those who

“know and own” their condition, which is why The Trust has developed and continues to develop, a range of resources specifically for children and young people explaining to them, and those around them, what FASD is and what it is like to live affected by FASD. We are very grateful to Jo and the rest of the team who are organising the Ball next March in Peterborough to raise funds towards the work of The FASD Trust. The monies raised will go directly towards our work supporting children and young people with FASD. You can find out more about FASD and the work of The FASD Trust at www.fasdtrust.co.uk or feel free to call us on 01608 811599.

I’ve been living in Stanground for the past 6 years, I have a ‘healthy interest’ in pubs and have been known to enjoy a glass or two... I’ll be bringing you a monthly guide on your local pubs and their facilities, plus will keep you updated on any special events, gigs or promotions they are running. I’ve been out on my travels to see what our locals have on offer. Stanground is fortunate to have a wide range of pubs, but with pubs closing at a rate of around 50 per week, it really is a case of Use It or Lose It – so, do get out there and support your local!

It is estimated that about one in three people over the age of 65 will fall each year. Although not an inevitable consequence of old age, falls can have devastating effects resulting in fractures, loss of confidence, depression, social isolation, reduced mobility and independence. If you have had a fall (or feel you may be at risk) or are recovering from a hip fracture , Falls Assist’s Comprehensive Falls and Hip Fracture Rehabilitation can help you regain your independence and live a more active life.

PARK FARM PUMAS FOOTBALL CLUB / ACADEMY Park Farm Pumas are recruiting!
Park Farm Pumas are a Youth Football club founded April 2010 by Ciaran McAuley. The club has seen growth in numbers attending and popularity. Success has been achieved by our vision that “ ….Pumas are a young football club formed to act as a vehicle for local children to take part in physical activity that provides them with an opportunity to learn valuable life skills such as teamwork, sportsmanship, respect and discipline while taking part in fun, playful sporting activities with friends in a safe, controlled environment.” The excellent FA qualified standard coaches have been the backbone to success so far. Since 2010 we’ve created and coached 10 Mini soccer teams and a football Academy catering for 60+ footballers from Peterborough, ages from 5-9 years. We’ve agreed significant long term deals with local businesses including Costa Coffee and Marriott hotels. We’ve attained the prestigious FA Charter Standard Accreditation marking a significant milestone and reaffirming our vision with the FA’s views on the best practice for running football. But it’s not just about football.

IT’S A KIND OF MAGIC Childrens football at Powerleague Colts
New Year, new socks and new hope for some steady weather! We’ve had nearly 3 weeks off from the football fixtures, I’m sure some of the young players have missed it. Although a new PS4 or Xbox 1 might have led to some forgetting all about the outside world. For all us football fanatics the Christmas period has provided a steady stream of Professional games, not least the 3rd round of the FA cup. As a child this was a major thing for me, watching the draw in early December and then watching attentively hoping that the lower league team could pull off a famous victory over a prestigious Premier league giant. Oh the magic of the FA cup! Something that sadly has diminished over the years, with the influx of foreign club owners who see the Premier league or champions league as the only things to win, some of them wouldn’t see the magic even if Dynamo and David Blaine were playing up front. Thank god then for kids football, the magic is there for all to see every weekend, all over the city, as youngsters in shiny new boots that Santa delivered, take part in organised football matches. All playing with a smile, win or lose, and the enjoyment of fresh air and rolling around in the mud without being told off. Come down to Stanground Academy, any Saturday or Sunday, and see for yourself.

Gingerbread with rhubarb orange fool
Ingredients:
3 tbsp black treacle 150ml milk 175g unsalted butter, diced 175g dark muscovado sugar 325g plain flour, sifted 1½ tsp bicarbonate of soda 3 tsp ground ginger 1 tsp ground cinnamon ¼ tsp grated nutmeg 2 eggs, lightly beaten For the fool: 500g rhubarb, cut into 3-4cm lengths 150g caster sugar zest and juice of 2 oranges 250ml double cream
Prep: 20 mins. Cook: 1 hr 10 mins. Serves: 6
This recipe teams rhubarb with two of its classic flavour combinations, orange and ginger. The gingerbread keeps well in an airtight container for a few days (if you have any leftover, which is unlikely!)
Method: 1. 2. 3.
4. 5.
6.
7.
Preheat the oven to 160˚C. Grease and line a 30cm x 20cm brownie (baking) tray, one which holds 1.2 litres (2 pints) of liquid. Put the treacle, milk, butter and sugar in a saucepan and gently heat until the butter and sugar has melted. Remove from the heat and leave to cool slightly, for about 5 mins, then stir in the beaten eggs. Put the flour, bicarbonate of soda, ginger, cinnamon and nutmeg in a large bowl. Tip in the egg/sugar mixture and gently stir until all the ingredients are combined. Pour into the baking tin and bake for about 45 mins, until a cocktail stick inserted into the centre comes out clean.
Remove from the oven, leave to cool in the tin for 10-15 mins, then turn out onto a wire rack to cool completely. 8. To make the fool, put the rhubarb, sugar, orange juice and zest in a large pan. Gently heat for about 10-15 mins, until the rhubarb is tender (test by inserting a sharp knife). 9. Remove from the heat and leave to cool. 10. Whisk the cream in a large bowl (don’t over-whisk, just do enough so that it is forming soft peaks). 11. Add the rhubarb mixture and gently fold into the cream. Serve the gingerbread cut into squares with a dollop of fool on the side.

Angel Spice:
An authentic wave of Indian flavour By Cameron Todd With the authentic aromatic smells and tastes of India, Angel Spice prides itself in being one of the best Indian restaurants in Peterborough. Easy to spot from the outside with full parking facilities and delicious cuisine it is definitely a restaurant that we would recommend. As you sit in the spacious, newly-decorated restaurant area you are faced with a genuine canvas painting that was flown from India and are waited on by the amazing staff who aim to make your experience one to remember. The menu has a lot of choice and is amazingly priced, a Tandoori Mixed Grill costing just £8.95 and a Chicken Tikka Jalfraazi costing just £8.60 – the menu even includes English options for those of you not keen on curry dishes. The food arrives piping hot, and the presentation is amazing, lots of colour on your plate – and the taste is a whole different ball game. The chicken is tender; the lamb is perfectly cooked, and with the genuine smell and taste of curry really makes you feel like you are dining in India. A diner at the restaurant, Lee McCormack, 45 said: “Everyone always feels welcome at Angel Spice. “The staff are really helpful and the food is perfectly cooked. I come for the buffet every Sunday because it has over 40 dishes and me, the wife and kids absolutely love it.” A few recommendations from us: Starters: Aloo Pakoora and Onion Bhaji Sides: Pilau Rice and Onion Rice – and definitely the Peshwari Naan! FISHTASTIC In Cardea We decided to take the plunge with Cardea Stanground thanks to a bit of Pot luck. We have been looking to expand Brand Fishtastic for a few years nothing has really felt right when looking at properties until Cardea. It’s an exciting and new development going up around us that we wanted to be apart of the future here. We wanted to bring our award winning formula to the area. Only having been open for 5 years at Orton Longueville we have quickly established ourselves in the top 50 of the National fish and chip awards across the whole of the UK (Trade equivalent to the OSCARS!) in the past two years, and another top 50 shop in a trade magazine awards. We currently are the only shop in Cambridgeshire as voted by industry experts in the 2014 top 50 shops. We put these achievements down to hard work and attention to detail, we use Local potatoes supporting local farmers along the way. Other Attention to details are a selection

“Did you file your 2013 tax return and pay any tax on time”? If not you should do so now to avoid incurring additional penalties, interest and surcharges. Question: What is considered a reasonable excuse for filing your tax return late? Answer: Generally, a ‘reasonable excuse’ is when some unforeseeable or unusual event beyond your control has prevented you from filing your return on time. For example: • •
a failure in the HMRC computer system; your computer breaks down just before or during the preparation of your online return; a serious illness, disability or serious mental health condition has made you incapable of filing your tax return; you registered for HMRC Online Services but didn’t get your Activation Code in time;
• •
The following bizarre, exotic and flimsy excuses have all been used by taxpayers without success:

My pet goldfish died (self-employed builder); I had a run-in with a cow (Midlands farmer); After seeing a volcanic eruption on the news, I couldn’t concentrate on anything else (London woman); 4. My wife won’t give me my mail (self-employed trader); 5. My husband told me the deadline was 31 March, and I believed him (Leicester hairdresser); 6. I’ve been far too busy touring the country with my one-man play (Coventry writer); 7. My bad back means I can’t go upstairs. That’s where my tax return is (a working taxi driver); 8. I’ve been cruising round the world in my yacht, and only picking up post when I’m on dry land (South East man); 9. Our business doesn’t really do anything (Kent financial services firm); and 10. I’ve been too busy submitting my clients’ tax returns (London accountant). All of these people and businesses received a £100 penalty from HMRC for filing late. They appealed against the decision using these excuses, but were unsuccessful. HMRC’s Director General of Personal Tax, Ruth Owen, said: “There will always be unforeseen events that mean a taxpayer could not file their tax return on time. Dates to remember: 19 February PAYE due for the tax month ended 5 February 2014 if paying by cheque or 22 February electronically. 28 February is the date you may incur a surcharge plus interest on any outstanding tax for the year ended 5 April 2013 and first payment on account for the tax year ended 5 April 2014.

Stanground Academy Young interpreters on hand to help with translation A team of 28 Young Interpreters who speak a total of 10 different foreign languages have been assisting other Stanground Academy students, parents and staff. These inspirational young leaders, who wear purple ‘Young Interpreter’ badges on their school uniforms, are on hand to act as buddies for pupils who have just started at school and do not speak English as their first language. They also help with support, interpreting and translation around school. Between them, the Young Interpreters speak Lithuanian, Polish, Russian, Latvian, Czech, Slovak, Hindi, Urdu, Punjabi and Greek. Students value the opportunity to be an active part of the Academy community. Young Interpreter, Lukasz Grzech, who is in Year 13 and speaks Polish, said: “It is a great idea for bilingual students to help newly arrived students. I was new once and I really needed this kind of support”. Teacher of EAL, Anna Godzisz, who launched the Young Interpreters scheme said: “It has really helped to raise the profile of our multi-national community. The scheme equips them with new skills they may use in their future professional career.” SENCo Matthew Tee said: “It is nice for the students to give them additional responsibility and also the students might feel more comfortable speaking to an interpreter who is another student rather than an adult.” This new opportunity complements the range of leadership activities offered at Stanground. These include; Sports Leaders, Business Leaders and the Academy Student Council.

INDEPENDENT SANDWICH BAR OF THE YEAR 2013
We said farewell to our former Head Teacher, Miss Tracey Phillips, who is moving onto pastures new after a once in a lifetime trip visiting friends and family in Australia. Tracey was presented with flowers by one of our former governors, Mrs Jan Martin, who was working at the school when she started and our Vicar, Mrs Anne Shorter. Each class also presented Miss Phillips with a keepsake book and sang a farewell song written by our music teacher Mrs Shirley Mitchell. In return Tracey presented each class with a leaving gift comprising wind chimes, coloured glass light reflecting mobiles, crystal spirals, tinkling toadstools and a gecko metal art to put up in our new sensory garden. This term we’ve got trips planned and speakers booked to come in and talk to the children for our themes which are Victorians and Toys in the Past for which we’ve asked parents and grandparents to send in any old toys for the children to see and play with.

Cosmic Katie‘s Stars
FEB 2014
By Katie Lancashire, Clairvoyant and Astrologer
Aries March 21-April 20 You are striding forwards as you mean to go on and you are almost unstoppable, what has once held you back and made you feel insecure is now in the past. Show peoples exactly what you are capable of. A certain someone will catch your eye around the 12th; this could be the start of something really lovely. Taurus
April 21-May21 Wow, this really is a month to set plans into action for you, planetary activity around the 16th sees you being unstoppable, aim high and reap the rewards. If your relationship has been a little neglected or you feel stifled, talk things through, you may well be surprised at how easily it can be remedied.
Gemini May 22-June 22 Thinking of heading in a new direction and having a fresh start? That may be all very well and good, but ask yourself, ‘what are you running away from? Is your current set up so bad? Or are you simply chasing a dream?’ This is not a month to be impulsive, bide your time and see what comes. A relationship needs extra TLC at the moment, pull out all the stops. Cancer June 23-July 23 You are finally letting go of all the things that have held you back for so long and its full steam ahead for you this month. Plans are put into action, and there will be barely anytime to stop and reflect. A meet up with old friends should be snapped up; you will have a great time. Romantically, your time to sizzle is around the 25th, enjoy! Leo July 24-August 23 You are in demand this month and in more ways than one. Work expects a lot from you right now, stand and deliver - you can do it. What seems like an innocent flirtation could in-fact be the start of something much more illicit, be careful if you don’t want to get burnt. If settled, now is the time to spice up your love life Virgo
August 24-September 23
This month sees you hurtling around like a mad person, trying to get everything done, be in twenty places at once and pleasing all those around you but not yourself. Stop right now. What is so important that it cannot wait a while? Focus more on your loved ones, and creating harmony in the things that bring you happiness.
Libra September 24-October 23 If you’ve been keeping a low profile recently, it is now time to come out of your hiding hole and show people what you are capable of. The middle of the month sees you at your strongest and most confident; use that to your advantage. An admirer from your past could cause you some confusion, think before you act. Scorpio October 24-November 22 You have a lot on your plate right now and not all of it is in your control, trust in the advice of those who know the sensitive situation you are in. Stay positive, this time will pass. A romance needs rekindling, work your magic as only you know how, the results will be electric!

Aquarius January 21-February 19 Are you still pursuing something or someone that seems to be going nowhere? Who are you really kidding? You have a big heart and big ideas, but you need to keep your feet firmly on the ground this month. An unexpected overseas trip will put your head in a spin, enjoy, this could be the start of something brilliant. Pisces February 20-March 20 Who has rattled your cage? It takes a lot for you to snap, but you are almost at breaking point, think before you speak, as words cannot be taken back. A money offer may be too good to be true, just make sure you don’t get caught out. Romantically this is one of your best months, enjoy every minute.
If it is your birthday this month....
There is restlessness to you that you can’t shake off, now is the time to tackle those inner emotions and voices. The quieter you are, the more you will hear. Finances will be looking healthy by the end of the month, just don’t go on a spending spree and blow it all. Your wit and charm will attract romantic interest from more than one person, leaving you with a choice of who to get to know better?!

February is a month that can bring heavy snow and if it does it is a good idea to take a brush and gently brush the snow off your trees and shrubs to prevent damage to branches. Prune your wisterias if you are lucky to have one - cutting back the side shoots to two or three buds. Prune back winter flower and Jasmine (Jasminum nudiflorum) after it has finished flowering. Take off all dead flowers from winter flowering pansies and generally keep tidy and if you have space in your garden for a nice easy to grow shrub why not plant a vibernum xbodnantense or a sarcococca to fill your garden with a wonderful scent. In the vegetable garden continue chitting your early potatoes for which I am told there will be a shortage of seed potatoes this year. Sow onions, beetroots, broad beans and leeks in modules but take care to allow them plenty of light or they will grow tall and spindly. Continue pruning soft fruit such as gooseberries, cut back main shoots to three buds of last seasons growth and cut back all other shoots to seven and a half centimetre of the base, low branches grow into the centre of the bush can be removed altogether and white currants and red currants prune back by about seven centimetres and prune all other side shoots back to one bud. Choose up to three of the oldest branches of the well established branches and cut those back to young vigorous shoots. Try not to trample over your lawn too much as you risk damaging the grass particularly through frosty periods and repair any damaged edges. Last but not least - Don’t forget to feed the birds and give access to plenty of clean water and why don’t you make a log pile to help small mammals and insects to thrive.Heres hoping February is not too dreary and that you have a good gardening month! “In his garden every man may be his own artist without apology or explanation” Louise Beebe Wilder Kind Regards,
